Who had Domingo German as the first pitcher to throw a perfect game since 2012??

Given how it appeared that he was pitching to save his spot in the rotation, after his last two less than stellar appearances, this was quite a surprise. Glad he put it together.

I got to watch the game while giving the youngest of my pups a haircut last night. The postgame was pure joy.

Mets did the right thing by trading who they did and getting some significant returns. Sucks for this year and maybe next, but the future is bright.

RIP to Vin Scully, the voice of the Dodgers from Brooklyn to LA. The Voice of Baseball "Game of the Week" when there was often only one nationally broadcast game each week.

Fellow alum of my alma mater, and many years later, keynote speaker and recipient of an honary doctorate at my graduation.

    94 is a good run.

Yeah that's not good at all. Every article I'm seeing says he's played his last game in MLB.

World Series kicks off tonight. Diamondbacks vs. Rangers.

Not sure who I like, but since the snakes gave up more runs than they scored this year, it'd be fitting to see them keep going.

I mostly came to this neary dead thread to post respect and best wishes to Dusty Baker as he announced his retirement as a manager.

I always enjoyed Dusty and thought he got a bad wrap sometimes when his teams came up short in the post season.

I will be cheering for the Diamondbacks. I hope Corbin Carroll becomes a mega star here.

I think the facts are something like his overall contract value is higher than the combined highest guaranteed deals in each of the nhl, the nba, and the nfl combined. The same as the net worth of the Rockies owner. And higher than the gdp of 6 different countries.

He’s not pitching in 2024 in hopes that his UCL heals itself. If it doesn’t then he’ll need TJ surgery.

Good for Ohtani. Pretty much all of these record setting deals aren’t worth it in terms of the baseball return, and become albatross contracts about mid way through, but with Ohtani there is the added value of having a whole country tuning into see him play. He is a global phenomenon.

Not sure what the implications are for the dodgers in terms of luxury tax spending over the length of the contract. That luxury tax gets mighty expensive when you stay over it every year.

98% of the money is deferred. He’ll take $2 million a year for the next decade, then the remainder of the money from 2034 to 2043. Insane.

From what I am hearing, Ohtani deferred most of it and avoids CA income tax if he moves after 10 years. I am shocked that the state of CA has not found a way to tax the deferred money,

Why does this matter to you? He will still count as $46 million per year against the salary cap each year so it’s not as if the Dodgers are getting full luxury tax avoidance. I don’t know how they calculate that but it’s not nearly as egregious as making his salary cap hit only $2 mil per year.

He obviously got more money in terms of totals because he’s deferring his payments interest-free. $700 million later is the same as $600 million sooner. Who am I to care about how this contract is structured. He can always call JG Wentworth if he needs cash now.

People act like Bonilla was the first player to defer money and that’s just not true.

I think this is a brilliant play by Ohtani and the Dodgers.

I don't care if Ohtani is content with taking his salary in 2024 or 2034 or 2084, that's up to him. But this feels against the spirit of having a luxury tax as long as the full amount of his contract isn't factored against the number of years of the deal equally as long as he's on the roster from beginning to end. The idea is to disincentivize large market teams from just being able to back up the brinks trucks for all the best players at the detriment of mid to smaller market teams. Hence the 'competitive balance' tax. Lowering his annual cbt number by more than $20M/yr while he's there doesn't do that at all.

I don't know the calculation so I can't comment on whether their calc makes sense or not. My understanding is they have a calculation method defined in the CBA for how much deferred payments count towards the luxury tax.

Conceptually, I'm fine with the principle that $100 mil 10 years from now is worth significantly less than that today. But I don't know if their calc is fair or if it's out of whack.

He's on the luxury cap for $46 million a year. I don't have a major issue with this at first glance.

$700 million is a huge number but it is less valuable than that in practical terms due to the deferral.

Ohtani's deferred payments start the year after Bonilla and seen memes about that already that we will continue to have a day to celebrate a player no longer playing getting paid by a team. lol

I get all that. The issue is though that he's playing for them now. Not when the money loses value, but now.

And they aren't competitively taking advantage of the deferral at that later date, they're taking advantage of it now.

Bruce Sutter signed a deal in 1984 that just finished paying out last year.

Ken Griffey Jr receives his final deferred payment next year.

I was hoping the Yankees would have landed Yamamoto, especially after they didn't grab Ohtani

There was a 0% chance the Yankees or Mets were getting either Ohtani or Yamamoto.

Ohtani deferred as much as he did so that the Dodgers could pay Yamamoto what he wanted. Also neither player seemed particularly enthused about NYC.

And these contracts only set the Dodgers up for the future when it comes to Japanese players. Japan is only getting better at baseball and with both these dudes on the same team, Japanese kids are going to watch a whole lot of Dodgers games and dream about following their idols to play for LA.

I’m so glad Cohen bought the Mets.

btw: I’m still watching 150 games a year. Poor me lol.

This was the first year I watched 0 baseball games. I usually catch a handful of cubs games, will watch any division series I can and of course the world series. Got 0 of them. Most likely be the same next year.

Yeah same here. I think I watched maybe 18 innings total across Mets games and the playoffs. I don’t have much free time and when I do have some it’s not usually spent watching TV. Similar story for football this season. I’ve watched a few minutes here and there but between work being crazy and the kids, I have no time to watch.

This wasn’t a matter of Cohen not offering enough money, Yamamoto had no interest in playing in NYC. Cohen flew to Japan to meet with him, not sure what else he could have done short of forcing Yamamoto to sign.

I haven't watched any football yet either. My boy watches with his uncle but that is their bonding time so I stay out of it. The wife and I are planning a super bowl party for all of us though so we will end up watching it.

I miss Super Bowl parties. The missus and I used to go all out. We’d even decide the menu based on what teams were playing. Always had a football ice cream cake too. Now with the kids it’s just too hard. We usually just watch it together after they’ve gone to bed and watch it on DVR. Not quite the same but still nice, just in a different way.

I will definitely be putting money on the game though. Love a good prop bet on FanDuel.
