2017 Match of the Year Tracking thread

The goal for this thread is for everyone to post their favorite matches from everywhere. Hopefully it helps people learn about things they never even knew about. That's my hope at least.

Good shout to the UK tournament.

Was really happy with Goto/Shibata. It's probably at 2 for me right now. Brilliant.

Why no love for Dunne/Bate defrost? Not trolling you, or even trying to debate it. Just curious of your take

I'm pretty sold on Naito vs Tanahashi being the best match of the year so far. Until something comes along that can come close to or beat that, I don't see the point in making a list. I'm sure many matches will come along and top it though as the year goes on.

I thought the shoulder thing actually hurt the match. Dunne really wasn't vicious enough toward it for me, nor did Bate really use it to drum up enough drama in my opinion.

Quick question - was Bate's 450 supposed to end in the stomp or was that a miss of a splash?

I wasn't sure at first, but when they showed the replay from another camera, it definitely looked intentional.

    Fair fair.

I was just surprised because it did have that story and i figured with you being the Japanese wrestling guy a story like that would of vaulted that over Dunne/Andrews which was more big move after big move.

I loved both matches btw, not knocking Dunn/Andrews at all

I'd like to watch the top WK matches again soon. Probably with Japanese commentary this time or maybe with JR & Barnett. Hard to compare Tanahashi/Naito to Omega/Okada. The former had less wrong with it but man did I get sucked into the latter watching it live. I wonder how much that'd be the case on another viewing. Those are my top two though.

    1. Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Tetsuya Naito, WK XI
    2. Kazuchika Okada vs. Kenny Omega, WK XI
    3. Pete Dunne vs. Tyler Bate, WWE UK Night 2
    4. KUSHIDA vs. Hiromu Takahashi, WK XI
    5. Hirooki Goto vs. Katsuyori Shibata, WK XI
    6. Pete Dunne vs. Mark Andrews, WWE UK Night 2

Good points. This is why I rate Dunne/Andres higher.

I got a question. Do you list matches by taped date or air date? I usually side with taped date.

Watched Shibata/Riddle. Pretty enjoyable stuff in what felt like something of a "dream match". Early mat stuff was watchable enough and the right way to start. Did like Riddle's flurry that prompted the transition to a strikes-based match. They teased the PK a couple of times as the move Riddle had to avoid. When he probably had Shibata beaten with a sleeper he goes for a PK himself instead and misses. Shibata finally gets it for the win. I didn't know how long the match was and wasn't paying attention to the time left on my media player so the ending felt quite abrupt. It was enjoyable enough though. I hope to see them go at it again when Riddle has more experience but he might get signed up by WWE before he does.

    1. Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Tetsuya Naito, WK XI
    2. Kazuchika Okada vs. Kenny Omega, WK XI
    3. Pete Dunne vs. Tyler Bate, WWE UK Night 2
    4. KUSHIDA vs. Hiromu Takahashi, WK XI
    5. Hirooki Goto vs. Katsuyori Shibata, WK XI
    6. Pete Dunne vs. Mark Andrews, WWE UK Night 2
    7. Katsuyori Shibata vs. Matt Riddle, RPW High Stakes 2017

Meltzer says that the last time he talked to Riddle he told Meltzer that he wanted to go to WWE, but not in the near future.

agreed. i liked a good portion of bate's selling, it wasnt too over the top and i loved how he dead armed it during the celebration, but that deadlift with the bad arm was a bleh spot, and he should've been dead armed from that moment forward if they really wanted to use it while keeping the story of the shoulder in tact. immediately cheapened the story they were going for, and the match was built so heavily on the story. andrews/dunne didnt have to worry about sticking to telling any specific thing, which helped it.

I am actually planning to watch the match again soon because I was so caught up with it in the moment and it's such a long match that there's a lot to go back to. I did think at the time that the match could and should have ended a few minutes before it did. There was a point I thought "it should have ended there". The Dragon Suplex from the top rope was a huge moment and that sticks out as a spot that should have had more consequences. I'm really not sure if this is accurate but I feel like they went on another 15 minutes or so after that? I don't think the comparatively slower opening 20 minutes hurt the match per se. I like things to build gradually. But I don't recall it having a whole lot of purpose to it either. Generally I enjoyed how "excessive" it was because this is the main event of the biggest show of the year and I thought Omega's performance was pretty astounding. So astounding in fact that you could possibly argue that he overshadowed Okada too much, given Okada is still the ace and Okada went over. I've seen a few people say they wanted more from Okada and that might be fair. I also read criticism of his lack of facial expressions and emotion throughout the match but I don't know if that's fair. He IS the champion and he seems to have developed a bit of that Misawa-esque professionalism and focus in his big matches.

that bit about the super dragon suplex was my one biggest complaint, especially since omega then hit the fisherman neckbreaker right after too for only a two. i mentioned in the six star thread that i feel like it shouldnt have been a pin spot, and okada shouldve taken a powder to the outside after those moves. i dont feel like it went another 15 minutes, but looking at my notes i do have quite a bit after that spot, so maybe they did.

i think okada was amazing. he came in confident, acting like he had been there before, like the ace that he is. he didnt let omega get to him early on, taking what omega had to dish out, using his experience on that big a stage to keep countering the OWA attempts, until eventually he's just dealt with enough of omega's onslaught, which leads to one of my favorite moments of the match where okada escapes the OWA once more and hits that first tombstone and while on his knees throws his arms out to the side and yells out, the emotions FINALLY boiling over, and he hits that first rainmaker and kenny kicks out and okada loses all emotion from his face in the best kickout reaction since takers when shawn kicked out of the cross pin tongue out tombstone at mania 25. absolutely perfect facials for both those moments. right after that, okada attempting to pick omega up and omega is defiant, striking okada in the gut, which hardly phases okada. just letting kenny punch himself out, bracing his core for the punches he knows are coming before having enough and forcing kenny to start standing, and kenny just mushes his hand in okadas face and eye which creates separation and okada, with enough body langauge to tell hes pissed and just has had enough of kenny's shit, hits a running low drop kick which omega sells perfectly and launches him backward into the turnbuckle violently, was another brilliabt sequence. okada turned on the emotions when he had to, which in this long of a match, was the final stretch. selling effectively in the first half plus allowed his outbursts at the end to feel more meaningful, as it felt like the stakes were very much raised. him roaring like he did before the first rainmaker fifteen minutes into the match might have been a cool display, but after going another half hour it'd be like 'you were so pumped but couldnt put him away for another half hour.' omega slowly drawing it out of the ace added a lot, to me.

Miyahara-Omori from AJPW on the 15th Jan was good. Reminded me of a WWE main event in 2003 with a better middle and end. Might as well use this thread for myself.

    Okada-Omega - NJPW WK11 (tied)
    Naito-Tanahashi - NJPW WK11 (tied)
Strong BJ-Twin Towers - BJW TV 2nd Jan
    Goto-Shibata - NJPW WK11
    Cena-Styles - WWE Royal Rumble
    Miyahara-Omori - AJPW in Hakata 15th Jan
    Volador Jr-Ultimo Guerrero - NJPW/CMLL Fantasticamania day 7
Aja Kong-Chihiro Hashimoto - Sendai Girls

The Elimination Chamber will sneak in there somewhere. Just not sure where yet.

you see keith lee vs. ricochet from last night? hell of a big man/little man match.

the part of okada/tiger mask where they just started stiffing the hell out of each other was insanely great, but i wasn't really blown away by the match as a whole, though it was very good.

There was something about Keith Lee's selling in that Ricochet match that irked me. Like he was doing too much of it and wasn't that great at it at the same time.

I'm impressed Ibushi could have that good of a match with that mask. I haven't seen any of his matches as Tiger Mask W yet, but from what I heard the mask was limiting what he could do in the ring.

He's probably not seen it. Even so, I'd still put Goldberg/Lesnar above it. Don't get me wrong, Cena/Styles is good, but Goldberg/Lesnar packed so much into it in a short space of time. Cena/Styles is very good, but didn't keep me attention as much as Goldberg/Lesnar.

The only WWE I have watched this year is the Rumble which was boring, the Elimination Chamber match which I thought was boring, and Wrestlemania from when the Hardys showed up until the end which I thought was mostly awful .

Defrost I don't get why you're willing to sit through relatively inconsequential shit like Elimination Chamber, watch Mania but miss the best matches on the card but yet won't watch the stuff everyone actually raves about. You claim it's a hatred for WWE but it's not like you boycott it. Watch Cena vs AJ Styles. It's a 5 star match. Then watch the triple threat tag from Takeover.

The triple threat from Takeover is a good shout, but Defrost has his reasons. No use in trying to push him to watch stuff if he does not want to.

I watched all that stuff live. I have so much wrestling I'd rather watch backlogged that I really have no time to go back to watch old recent WWE stuff.

why do you people care what he watches or enjoys? he created this thread for shit outside of the WWE and each year it always devolves into people coming in here and harping on him about not having this lauded WWE match on the lost or placing a different WWE match in a low spot.

I think it might because of the thread title. I completely agree with you that Defrost gets too much shit, but some people see a thread with "2017 matches tracking thread" and feel a need to point out WWE matches that he hasn't seen yet. thinking it's an overall forum-vote which is maybe why Peter and the like jump on him.

If Defrost said the thread saying "My favourite matches of 2017" or something, there may be less hostility possibly. I'm not saying Defrost needs to start doing that as of now, but just saying why sone might find the title misleading.

No the goal for this thread is for everyone to post their favorite matches from everywhere. Hopefully it helps people learn about things they never even knew about. That's my hope at least.

Your intentions are good, but I think it's misunderstood in the fact that people think it's just about your personal list.

Perhaps the first post needs to be clearer that this is a thread for everyone. Just saying.

I wish I could have seen what you all saw in Okada/Shibata to make it my MOTY. As it stands, it was a great match in my Top 5.

I went in totally cold and thought the match was really good. I can understand why people into CWF or Trevor Lee would consider it a MOTYC.

Honestly can't see anything beating Minoru Suzuki vs Sanshiro Takagi in an empty arena match at the Tokyo Dome for MOTY. Nope. No sir. No way. Nah.

Surprised KUSHIDA/Hiromu isn't higher. My list is way behind and when I finish up the last few G1 matches I have to watch I want to update, and KUSHIDA/Hiromu is a top 5 contender for me.

I am not the world's biggest Kento Miyahara fan, but his match against Ishikawa at the All Japan Sumo Hall show was great

Haven't seen best of the Super Jr. Final. Is it really that high on your list? I will have to search for it somewhere. I can agree with a lot of your list just different order I think for some Tainted.

the BOTSJ final is ranked 14th for me out of all the njpw ive watched this year. a lot of the things above it are g1 matches. i still havent watched a lot of top new japan matches(shibata/okada, okada/omega II and III, g1 final, all wk outside the main and all dominion rematches), so it'll undoubtedly get pushed down the list. it was far and away my favorite of the tournament, but i kinda dont like ospreay. i feel like your opinion on him will ultimately color your satisfaction with the match.

Nakajima vs Cage was a lot of fun. Thinking I'm skipping Nakajima vs Edwards though. Mostly because I don't care.

Thanks for the suggestion, All Japan has been quietly killing it for some time now and I think Miyahara has been a great champion to carry them into a new era.
