When he kills the strongman henchman? That was as violent as a Looney Tunes cartoon.

Other than Bruce DJing the CD, everything you mentioned was awesome.

    How is it awesome?

How is catwoman's origin story in any way awesome?
How is making Batman an antisemitic christmas movie awesome?

    Explain that to me...

Literally any origin story would have been better than that...
It's a huge shame because every other element from art design, cinematography, music, acting, etc is fantastic...
But the script for that movie is a giant pile of greasy shit stained ass...

Antisemitic? You're seeing things that aren't there. He's a mutant who vaguely resembles a Penguin. There's nothing antisemitic about the character. He's not even Jewish. You see a Christmas tree in the Cobblepot's house at the beginning of the movie.

Catwoman's origin is absurd, but it's not like it's out of place in the film.

He rides down a river in a basket as a baby and tries to kill all the first born sons...
    On Christmas...

Of the twelve different things the Penguin is in this movie, THEY ALSO MADE HIM EVIL MOSES

    ........WHY?

Wesley Strick, the writer who came up with the Moses parallel, is Jewish.

"mistletoe can be deadly if you eat it, but a kiss can be even deadlier if you mean it"

On its own, this line would be cringe inducing, but they decided to make it a major plot point...

A Jew wrote it. Regardless of how asinine you think it is, it isn't antisemitic.

    Who looks like this...

    Into Evil Moses...
    On Christmas...

Again, the writer of the film is Jewish.

Most incarnations of the Penguin have a beak-like nose. Beyond that, this Penguin's appearance is an homage to Dr. Caligari.

I feel like we wouldn't even be arguing if this didn't have the Batman IP attached to it, and therefore was a piece of your childhood...
It would just be that incredibly crappy christmas movie with a short hooked nosed evil moses in it...

Maybe, but you can't blame non-Jews in this case as satisfying as BC may find it.

You're leaping at an opportunity to pull the race card when it is a non-issue.

Also Hollywood is run by Jews so your frustrations are severely misplaced.

It's evil hooked nosed moses in a christmas movie...
There's no race card to pull. This isn't something that's debatable...
There's no argument to have here...

    You're arguing water isn't wet...

And it's only one of about 700 things wrong with that movie...
A batarang takes out four people and is caught by a poodle...

...but it was directed by a Jewish man so you are correct, there is no race card to pull. Also I don't see hooked noses and think 'Jew'. Maybe everybody else isn't the problem here?

I don't know if Tim Burton is Jewish, but Wesley Strick is. To suggest the movie intended to be antisemitic is asinine.

Mask of the Phantasm is finally coming to Blu-ray. I had it on VHS way back in the day - brilliant film and still one of my favourite "origin stories" for the character.

Did this also come out in the theaters? For some reason I thought it did. I'll say this, I didn't really care for it the first time I watched it. Then I bought it on DVD maybe 10 years ago and watched it and appreciated it more the 2nd time around.

It definitely came out in theaters. It was meant to be a direct-to-video release, but I think WB were impressed enough to put it in theaters. It flopped at the box office, unfortunately.

And then fanboys got pissy over the end of The Dark Knight Rises because Bruce Wayne didn't want to be a miserable bastard for the rest of his life.

I mean he won at the end of that movie. He made a Gotham that didn't need Batman...
He was already retired for years from having cleaned up the city before Bane showed up...

You know Siskel and Ebert deeply regretted not giving "Mask of the Phantasm" the time of day while it was in theaters...
They devoted a whole episode of their show to it after it came out on VHS, as they both thought it was fantastic once they saw it...

But it was a non Disney animated movie with the shittiest theatrical trailer imaginable. So it had a lot going against it...

Yeah, that's not a good trailer.

Roger Ebert really loved that movie.

I miss Ebert. He was the best.

Amped for Mask of the Phantasm. My shelf has looked empty without it.

He made a Gotham that didn't need a Batman before Bane based on a lie. Post Bane, the city no longer needed him. He gave everything for them so that they wouldn't need the Batman.

You know what Batman animated movie is seriously underrated by all fans including myself? Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. Batman Beyond was a tough one for me to get into mainly because it came out when I was 17-18 and wasn't really in tune with any animation unless it was whatever Cartoon Network was showing at 11pm on Saturdays (which at the time was like 3 anime shows). But a few years later I saw it on Cartoon Network, recorded it on to a tape, and watched it about 20 times haha.

I just checked and it's on Blu Ray and DVD. I did not know that they had a game for PSOne. That's awesome.

so matt reeves is saying that he's going with a totally new script for the batman, with the writing process just now beginning on it. i'll be curious to hear stories about the affleck/johns script down the line, and also interested if the new script/story still includes deathstroke as a villain, and if not, is manganiello still involved.

Affleck's solo Batman movie in doubt and he may exit the series sooner rather than later. Nothing confirmed just rumors:

Ben Affleck is heading to Comic-Con this weekend to promote Warner Bros.’ upcoming Justice League movie, set for a Nov. 17 release. But how many more times is he likely to put on the Batsuit? Probably not many, if ever again.

Yes, Warners’ film studio chief Toby Emmerich tells The Hollywood Reporter, "Ben is our Batman. We love him as Batman. We want to keep him in the cowl as long as we can." And Matt Reeves, who will direct the studio’s still-undated (and unwritten) The Batman, has said that he means to keep Affleck in the role. But a source with knowledge of the situation says that the studio is working on plans to usher out Affleck’s Batman — gracefully, addressing the change in some shape or form in one of the upcoming DC films.

Exactly when and how that might happen has yet to be determined, but it would be wise to bet against Affleck starring in The Batman. He has already stepped away from directing the film and Reeves is dropping the script that Affleck wrote with D.C. Entertainment’s Geoff Johns.

this is just all really unfortunate. i really dig affleck as batman, so to see him possibly dropping out so quickly, maybe without a solo film, sucks. but i get why they want to grab someone younger. i wish WB and DC didn't have their heads up their asses when they were conceiving this whole universe.

If the problem is that they fucked up the psychology of Batman by making him a giant murder machine, I know a way to fix that...

Have Bruce Wayne visit orphans at an orphanage, and have a ten year old orphan who hates Batman because Batman killed his dad...
You suddenly put Batman face to face with the whole reason he does what he does and punch him right in the soul...

You want an impetus for Batman not to kill, there it is...

I've been expecting Affleck's exit for awhile. Probably after Justice League comes out, don't want to announce he's gone before then. It's a shame, he was a great choice as director and a good one as the actor (a bit on the old side, although he easily could have portrayed a younger Batman). Just didn't work out.

So what does WB have at this point? Wonder Woman was a big success and will obviously get a sequel. Maybe Justice League will surprise and turn out good, but the buzz has been really negative (in contrast, the buzz for Wonder Woman was all positive). I think if I were WB I'd put the brakes on anymore Justice League movies until they've got a few more of their stars established. Fix Batman and Superman and then you've got a strong big three that can carry more Justice League movies.

I doubt that's the problem. I bet it's more that BvS was dogshit and Ben (who's just come into being a highly acclaimed Hollywood guy again for the first time in a while, hitting arguably the peak of his career) realized this universe stinks and is just going to return him to being a joke again. That video clip of him staring off when the negative reviews of BvS were mentioned was a funny viral video but it was also telling of his mindset in realizing he's hitched his wagon to the wrong super hero studio.

I hope Batman isn't killed off. I'd rather them do a passing of the torch from Bruce to Dick rather than keeping Bruce as Batman.

I'd rather it be an elseworlds movie starring Keaton as Batman.

I still think the scene in Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker where Robin gets mindfucked into becoming Joker Jr is one of the scariest things a kid's show can do.

Is there another person they could cast as Batman who would generate as much buzz? The only other one might be Bale and I think Keaton would probably be a bigger deal.

Sounds like he won't be in The Batman which is probably not going to part of the JLA series (it will have a younger Batman). But it still seems unclear if Affleck will be in JLA movies after JLA1. He's signed on for 1 more after that.

They want to do movies that are outside of the main cast, like origin movies or just one-off plots from the characters' younger days. I don't think it's that crazy, especially given the Justice League series has gotten off to a mediocre start and won't become anything close to the Avengers success. It The Joker or The Batman movies hit, that could launch a separate shared universe of sequels (whether or not it's still in the same canon as JLA which takes place 20 or so years later)

Now that makes perfect sense and I think I heard about that before. That's an obvious move and I think it'll be a hit if done right.

I like the idea of multiple versions of the same characters, but I worry that this will confuse audiences.

YES. They were the only good stuff in that shitty movie. Walked away from it wishing we just got a Joker/Harley flick instead, so I'm super on board with this.

I thought Leto was shit for the most part. It felt like he was playing a try-hard henchman that the "real" Joker would kill for annoying him.

The new Planet of the Apes movies weren't good. They were by-the-numbers bullshit.

Remember, DC likes to announce a bunch of movies, and they only have made 4 (Man of Steel, BvS, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman), with only one in production currently (Aquaman).

They've been talking about The Rock as Black Adam for about 5 years, and nothing has come from it.

Obviously different people can have different opinions but I don't see much point in trying to discuss it as you're set in your opinion and I'm not looking to change it. I get why people didn't care for it.

Jared Leto's role was over hyped. I thought he did just fine. People were expecting an Oscar worthy performance, and were disappointed. All said, there was nothing wrong with his role or his performance. Robbie was good and fit the character perfectly. I can't think of anyone else who could of pulled off what they were asking any better. The movie had high expectations, and when it failed to live up to those expectations, everyone shit on it. It doesn't mean it wasn't a fun movie.

The new Planet of the Apes movies were spectacular. War of the Apes was a masterpiece.

Leto shouldn't have been promoted for the movie at all. If he's there, fine, but don't build him up as the focus when he's barely in it.

Reminds me of how much Aquaman merch there was for BvS. Made it seem like he was in it at least as much as Wonder Woman.

Sounds like it might have just been his brother bullshitting. No official change in status, we'll see where this goes. If I had to make a bet I'd say he's out after Justice League, but we'll see.

Your definition of barely in it is totally different than most. He had quite a few scenes and we all know why he was heavily promoted, the Joker is one of the biggest "draws" for DC. Batman was barely in it.

His screen time was less than ten minutes.

Had a few too many IPAs when I wrote this. The new Apes movies are okay.

I bought in for Harley, so I didn't give a crap about Leto's Joker.

My youngest daughter and I watched the new animated movie with Batman and Harley Quinn. It was in the old 90's style cartoon animation which was pretty awesome. Out of 5 I'd say it was a 3.

Ok so as I said, PRACTICALLY, meaning almost. The reason I said that is because you have 2-3 other key players i.e. Harley Quinn, Batman for 2 seconds, and Deadshot if anyone gives a fuck enough about Will Smith-which I do. But again, a lot of the comments I read, a lot of the peeps I talked to outside of the net, they were talking about The Joker's scenes. If I think hard enough though it was probably more of them criticizing or giving an opinion I should say on the scenes and/or his portrayal as Joker.

I bought Batman in the 1940s. It has Batman and Dick Grayson's original origin stories. Robin kills like half a dozen mob guys in his origin story. It's kinda hilarious. Really in the early comics Batman and Robin kill more people than Charles Bronson in Death Wish.
