I went to see The Lego Batman Movie on Saturday. It's great. The opening 15 minutes is one massive non-stop joke of every Batman movie ever made. It's hilarious. I can't wait to go see it again. 8/10.

I'm a huge Rock fan, so Fast Eight and Baywatch are at the top of my list. Can't wait for those two, to be honest...

Morris From America (7/10) - Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. Some very cringeworthy moments, but all in all it was a nice refreshing take on the "fish out of water" style comedies/coming of age films.

The Founder (6/10) - Another solid film today, but a bit all over the place in terms of the story. Good performances save this from being below average, and I suppose that I had no idea about any of it helped too.

I found The Founder to be highly average. The trailer pretty much tells you everything you need to know.

I didn't watch the trailer, and I didn't know anything about the story. Probably would've made your viewing experience better.

Come and Find Me - 7/10 - Much better than I expected. Plenty of twists, but it did all get a bit ridiculous. Easy watching, Aaron Paul is pretty good in it. It felt like a long TV show than a movie.

I'm intrigued by the trailers for A Cure For Wellness. Anyone hear anything about this one? See? Avoid?

Looks good but the reviews have been average at best. I'll still go see it as I like Gore Verbinski's other films.

Finally caught up to Sing Street the other day. What a massively delightful film.

Great songs, great chemistry, humor, and just enough of an uphill effort story-wise to make the inevitable sap completely guilt-free. Terrific all-around.

Arrival was pretty fantastic. The ending was one hell of a ride. Great storytelling. 8/10.

Lego Batman was buckets of fun. Didn't change my life or anything but it was thoroughly entertaining and funny, surprisingly deep, and (maybe I just picked up on this) wonderfully gay.

John Wick: Chapter Two - The action was great, but the story and particularly the last 20 minutes was a bit boring. I had high expectations after loving the first film, but I just wasn't into this one as much. 6/10.

Get Out- did not expect the movie to be as good as it was even with the 99% rating on Rotten. This movie had the theater cheering at many points throughout especially the end. Crazy stuff.

Just saw that one of my favorite book series hits the theater in April. American Assassin, with Michael Keaton, Taylor Kitsch, and Dylan O'Brien in the title role. Can't wait. This has been stuck in development hell for years.

Absolutely can't wait to see this. Very, very happy they decided to make this movie first rather than get Mark Wahlberg to play the older version of the character. I'd love to see this series take off so they can make a few more.

So I finally saw La La Land and I think it was grossly overrated. Did not find it anything but average at best.

Watched a couple of recent big deal flicks over the past couple days, "Moonlight" and "Arrival".
"Moonlight" left me feeling like the majority of what I was interested in wasn't in the movie. I feel like there could be a better movie made about the same topic. There was some really good stuff in there but on the whole, it didn't affect me like I expected it to.
"Arrival" was really good. Reminded me of "Interstellar" a bit. Felt like it kind of fizzled out a bit in the last few minutes but otherwise, really kept me intrigued.

I LOVED Beauty and The Beast. It was perfection!

Guardians 2 was amazing - action, comedy & touching moments.

    Think its been a real strong year for films so far personally and outside the oscar best film noms I would be highly recommending;

    The handmaiden
    20th century women
    Get out
    Clash
    Raw
    Elle
    Lady McBeth
    Free fire
    Prevenge
    Colossal
    Trainspotting 2

Few of those I really enjoyed but from last year's (US) releases ... The Handmaiden, 20th Century Women, Elle.

Liked Get Out from this year, but not as much as most people seemed to. Also adored Logan and quite liked I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore. Enjoyed Beauty and the Beast, but didn't love, love it. And still looking to see Colossal after watching the first 15 min before getting sidetracked.

Haven't seen any of them. Probably averaged about 3 films a month so far. Usually play catch up in October/November on all the best ones after you lot put up some lists.

You've missed out on some good films then, Lady Macbeth, Handmaiden, Free Fire, Get Out, Elle and 20th Century Women in particular.

"It Comes at Night" is a psychological horror film that's getting rave reviews at the moment. It opens in the States on June 9th.

Films with American as the first word in the title do tend to be disproportionately good.

American Psycho, American History X, American Gangster, American Honey, American Beauty, American Gods, American Pie, American Hustle, American Graffiti...

I was just reading a very negative review of that flick earlier. Apparently the trailer makes you think it's going to be one thing but the actual movie is completely different. Dude said he'd probably have been less harsh if he'd not watched the trailer but even then, he still wasn't that impressed.

I've got no horse in the race, I just read it and thought I'd put it out there as an opinion. Dude does tend to be a bit of a grumpy-guss, I'll say.

    Jumanji 2 looks fun.

Anything with Hart and The Rock in it will be at minimum mildly entertaining.

Okja what a great film. I've been greeting for the last 20 mins. I like the message and its not in your face vegan "dont eat meat, meat is murder". Its so much deeper and leaves the ball directly in the viewers court to make a decision on how they feel about consumerism and production of products in general.

The relationship between Okja and Mija reminded me of Studio Ghibli but brought to life.

Gyllenhaal going full Nic Cage is the only thing im not sure about.

Train to Busan: A South Korean Zombie film that takes place mostly on a train. One of the best action horror films I've seen in a few years. 9/10. It's currently on UK Amazon Prime.

Yeah, it's really very fucking good.

Was Moonlight this year? I watched that last night. Very deserving of all the praise it received.

I wasn't really a fan of Moonlight, at all.

Just watched Get Out last night. If that's 2017 then it's probably up around the top of my list, so far.

I liked Get Out but it wasn't as good as I expected. It was a very welcome change of pace from the usual dime a dozen horror flicks out there, though. Already mentioned Moonlight earlier, it was quite a letdown.

Oh yeah, I saw The Handmaiden too. Brilliant film. Bit too explicit for some in the cinema though. Quite a few sudden departures once the first 'scene' happened, and then when it occurred again, one of the women that had previously left and then come back in, stormed off saying "oh for goodness sake!".

Utterly bizarre and excellent in equal measure.

    Moonlight is an excellent film.
    Handmaiden as well.
Get Out was nice, though underwhelming.

Life. Good enough to get through to the end of the movie but not enough to recommend it.

The Resurrection of Gavin Stone. Feels like one of those movies I've seen before that I liked, and just got repackaged with a new name and cast. Fun movie. Exceeded expectations for a WWE studios movie.

Baby Driver. One of the most fun movies I've seen in awhile, up there with the 1st Guardians of the Galaxy. I think it stalled a little bit about midway but it was very brief and just kept on going. Nice touch with incorporating music into the movie as often as they did.

Heard good things about Baby Driver but I don't like the title. I keep thinking it's a movie about a baby, like that Boss Baby movie.

I watched Sully (2016). It was pretty solid. Some parts dragged and I would have probably cut it by about 10 minutes but overall it was cool the way they showed the plane going down and what went into the decision-making. It felt very real in terms of what was going on in the cockpit and with the air traffic controller and the experience of the passengers. They didn't make it too over the top, except the part at the end where they're watching the live simulations - that seemed a little unrealistic. I can't imagine that's actually what those hearings are like. But I suppose every movie needs a dramatic ending and that was what the script required.

I watched War for the Planet of the Apes last night. Was really good. The perfect way to finish the trilogy. The 3D was the best I've seen in a long time as well. 9/10.

Off to see War for the planet of the apes tonight. In 3D also which is a rarity for me as I think only certain movies work well with it.

Yes it is. Usually not too interested if I hear a film is a musical, but I was singing half the soundtrack to this for a solid week after seeing it.

As others have said Sing Street is wonderful.

If you are after musicals I would say Baby Driver is a very untraditional musical as it relies so much on the sound track for the choreography (whether this may be fight scenes or car chases) and to develop the story. Also Edgar Wright doesn't do shit.

I really enjoyed The Big Sick, story was solid and engaging enough to keep me focused. The scenes with his Pakistani family were by far the most comical and I was chuckling away during everything involving them.

Saw Detroit tonight and really enjoyed it. Second act was the best, basically a horror movie. Strong performances from the whole cast, only real complaint is some of the dialogue was corny and too clearly meant to refer to current events and attitudes.

    I want to see Detroit.

I watched The Shack last night. Couldn't make it through. I honestly only saw 1 preview, it looked really interesting....40 minutes in I realize holy shit, this is a really preachy Christian movie. Again, went into the movie with little to no idea what it was even about. I like Sam Worthington, Tim McGraw was good, Radha Mitchell is someone I really like, but yeah, not into the over the top preachy dialogue. If it didn't have such an overbearing "How dare you!?" type vibe I would have A-made it through the entire film (I watched probably an hour and 20 minutes of a 2 hour plus movie) and B-considered it one of the better movies just based on everything else. I liked the humanizing of the Holy Spirit, I like the mystical stuff, the CSI-element with his daughter being kidnapped.

I have had an extremely hard time finding good horror movies in the last, fuck idk how many years. Is all of this Conjuring/Annabelle stuff related or am I thinking of Insidious? Insidious was really good. I watched the Bye Bye man...sucked. Rings....sucked. It can't be a generation/age thing, but then again, we're talking about my generation who grew up in the 80's, 90's and early 00's where we saw everything pretty much so maybe it just takes a lot to peak my interest these days. So maybe that's all it is and these movies like Bye Bye Man or some shit starring Bella Thorne getting her coked out head blown off by a spirit is actually really tight.

Yes, Annabelle is part of the Conjuring franchise. Insidious is separate, but from the same director so they are somewhat similar.

I started watching the Bye Bye Man but turned it off it was so bad. I enjoyed The Ring, but didn't like The Ring 2 so I didn't even give Rings a shot.

Nothing beats the slashers of the 80s, I'll choose Friday the 13th or Halloween over anything released these days in heart beat.

Conjuring and Annabelle are connected. Insidious gets confused with Conjuring because Patrick Wilson is the star in both of the franchises.

The Friday the 13th films really really suck when you go back and watch them now. I'm not sure how anyone can watch that shit. Halloween 1 and 2 were good. The rest is shit.

As for current horror movies, i liked the Witch, Insidious, Conjuring, Green Room, Babadook, It Follows to name a few

    Agree with all of this.
I recently started going back through the Halloween, Friday the 13th, and Nightmare on Elm Street movies, and although I enjoyed the first few from each franchise, I kinda felt that maybe its the nostalgia that's making up for how badly they've aged.
Those recent movies you listed are arguably the best of the current bunch of horrors, along with stuff like "Get Out", "10 Cloverfield Lane", "The Sacrament", "The Invitation", "Don't Breathe" (if Green Room counts then I guess these do), "Sinister", "The Woman in Black", plus a bunch of others depending on what your standards are.
I'd say there's a decent amount of horror movies out there. It's just that they don't get the kind of mainstream exposure like they used to, so you don't always hear about them. It's also a matter of taste. I personally like the " found footage" sub-genre and there's a decent amount of those about too.

The Friday the 13th movies are great! Why the hate?

Aren't all the early Friday movies carbon copies of one another? One thing that's fun is to go back and watch Jason the monster develop.

But they're all too similar. Young group of sexy teens. One skinny dipping scene. Even some of the death scenes were blatantly reused.

I did go to see Baby Driver the other day. Edgar Wright is a criminally underrated filmmaker.

Sound track will be phenomenal. Fun take on the heist/bank robbing genre. I enjoyed it immensely. Jon Hamm surprised me with his performance.

Michael Myers is the best slasher villain. The Shape rules.

Yeah, I'm definitely seeing that. Aronofsky is saying it's a horror movie with subtext. That's right up my alley.

Aye. The surround sound on the trailer was gorgeous.

Agree with all those you listed. I am a fan of the Paranormal Activity and first couple Saw films.

Paranormal Activity was absolute garbage. Perfect example of a movie that was really hyped up as the scariest film ever yet was about as scary as watching paint dry

I don't like the "found footage" type of movies. To me it's just a way to try to cover up a less-than-stellar plot. Just personal preference. Didn't like Blair Witch Project, didn't like Paranormal Activity, etc.

And I thought The Exorcist was garbage.
The thing with found footage movies is that I personally find it easier to suspend disbelief, providing the acting and the special effects are good. I mean, take Paranormal Activity as an example. I don't believe in the supernatural, but if someone was being haunted, that's how I imagine it would look in real life. Not having to physically see a blatantly "CGI'ed" ghost or whatever, makes it more believable to me.
