Really is. Fantastic sci-fi story, deeply concerning human elements, great performances, visually arresting at times and just so delicately at others.

And all framed together by a director who I'd race to the theater to see if his next picture were so much as an antacid commercial.

Just such a very good film overall.

In saying that, I also loved Shotgun Stories, Take Shelter and Mud. Nichols just makes a fine film in my eyes. For me this was his usual gritty work in the form of a classic 80s sci-fi film, the likes of which you would watch again and again any time they happened to be shown on TV (although obviously this film has more grim violence). The story isn't anything extraordinary then, as it follows that genre format (the religious cult beginning was interesting), but it's still highly enjoyable to see a weird, suspenseful, mysterious film played out by an excellent cast. The ending was perfect.
See im not sure if I just don't get Nichols. All of his films just put me to sleep. I watched Loving this week and it took my two watches to get through it. Just so slow and low key, I felt the same about Take Shelter and Midnight Special. Undoubtedly well made films, well acted and well scripted but just so painfully ponderous. I did rather love Mud though, but that felt a bit more upbeat.

I did also think the same about Arrival on a related note, although I think I'm in the minority there too.

Saw this as part of a film festival last year. Very good. Really tweaky film, plenty of suspense, and an original storyline.

I haven't seen Loving yet, the story seems a little out of tune with Nichols' other work so it hasn't made me want to rush to see it. I think I see it as perhaps an understated air of menace lurking in these films, including to an extent Mud. For me they build a kind of slow tension rather than being ponderous.

Funny how I saw this last night too, even though I've had it for a little while now. Really enjoyed it. Especially the sort of old school horror feel to it with its setting, music, the way its shot, etc.

I watched Everybody Wants Some last night. Funny how Richard Linklater films seem to be enjoyable without anything ever really happening in them. Not as good as Dazed and Confused but I still thought it was a very good watch.
