    2016 WWE Matches

For posterity, here is the thread for this year's match voting. I'm not sure anything on RAW quite made anyone's cut, but I know Neville/Owens came damn close. Becky/Charlotte was also a pretty good outing.

For those that don't know the rules: it's pretty simple. Any one of us nominates a match that has taken place this year. Feel free to back up your nomination with reasons why you liked it, why you think it's one of the standout matches of the year, grades, etc., but you're not required to do any of that. It just helps your(and the match's) case. Once a match has been nominated, any poster can come in here and vote YES or NO as to whether they think it's worth making the list. I'll keep a running tally. Matches with 5+ points are italicized, and those with 10+ are bold. At the end of the year, we'll use the list as a reference for a Top 25 list.

And do not forget to send your Top 25 lists in the thread for 2015 -->

Nominating Ambrose/Owens from the Rumble. I thought it was paced very well with nice spots, good psychology and great facial expressions. I just wish they could've gone five to eight minutes longer with a couple more big spots. I think it probably would've moved into classic territory with that.

I need to rewatch the rest but my initial instinct is that the rest of the undercard was good but not quite worth a nomination.

I will agree, it was good and I'll add a yes.

Also nominating Charlotte/Becky. Told a good story and worked their asses off. Charlotte is great as a heel and Becky as the plucky face is great.

Nominating the Rumble match itself. Best Rumble in years.

No to the Rumble. Some bits were good - Styles, Owens, Ambrose. But most was meandering and illogical.

    yes on Owens v Ambrose
Need to watch Becky/Charlotte again tbh
    No on the Rumble

I thought New Day v Uso's was good enough for a nomination tbh - I thought it was the second best match of the night.

You know it's true. Stuff with Reigns, Bray, Zayn, Lesnar, Owens and bits of Trips' involvement ranged from confusing to downright stupid.

Yes to Ambrose/Owens, no to rumble match, only because of the ridiculous Reigns going to the back for a rest bollocks otherwise it would of been yes.

What was illogical about Owens and Zayn? Zayn eliminated Owens and Zayn got eliminated by the Wyatts right?

They have Zayn come in, which is great and they have him eliminate Owens, which is great. EVERYTHING about Owens' character says he should've come back in and eliminated Zayn. Instead Zayn is a nothing elimination for The Wyatts which isn't a bad thing, but it's bit of a waste.

Wyatt was the worst elimination. I thought his elimination of Lesnar was a bit underwhelming because Lesnar didn't come back in and destroy. But why on earth have Trips eliminate Wyatt? He didn't make the final four and it's an elimination that is going to lead absolutely nowhere. Call back to a previous feud and have him eliminated by Reignsor Ambrose - fine. But why Trips? That'll lead nowhere. Why not do the logical thing and extent the story with Lesnar?

The Roman thing is unforgivable booking. Gotta make Roman look strong but up against a crowd who hates him already they decide to book him like an ultimate heel. Baffling.

They should have had The Wyatts beat down Brock further outside the ring and carry him to the back. They all left at the same time so no reason not too.

Instead they did a close up on Lesnar who looked like he wanted to go after Bray then thought fuck it, Im done. The complete opposite of his character.

I don't agree with you about the Owens and Zayn elimination. I do agree about Wyatt getting eliminated by HHH. It didn't make much sense there. The Reigns thing was baffling as well by having him leave the match for like 30 minutes. It doesn't make much sense.

No to the Rumble and tag match.

They were fine, just not on par with how I see top matches of the year go

Edit: Actually going to rewatch the tag match and see about a different rating.

I'm gonna nominate Styles/Jericho as well as Dean/Roman vs. Sheamus/Rusev.

The former for some selfish reasons, but I loved the pacing of it and it put over AJ well, the latter because it was a pretty well done tag match to keep Dean and Roman on a roll

NO to Styles/Jericho. It was a fine match that made perfect sense for AJ in his debut. The pacing was a tad slower and they saved his explosive offensive for another day, without giving too much away all in one night. That said, I felt the match had a nice beginning, good middle but no end. It felt like it was finally getting ready to take off then ended with a reverse pin. He will have much, much better WWE matches.

Yes to Owens/Dean for reasons already listed. Not quite able to say yes to Becky/Charlotte or the Rumble match.

    Not seen Raw yet...

No to Charlotte/Becky- mainly because of too much Ric Flair. I'll be glad when he just makes a few appearances a year.

Nominating: Neville vs Kalisto United States championship SD 1/28/16.

Everyone should make an effort to check it out. Great cruiserweight style match.

Was kind of wrestling myself as to whether I should nominate this. It was great action, but felt too stilted and without a lot of build because of the commercial breaks. But it was definitely worth a watch, and it was great to see Neville and Kalisto get to do their thing a bit more.

Fuck it, for feeling so damn fresh, I'll say YES.

    Gonna rewatch some of the Rumble eventually to give some proper votes to that PPV. Still trying to get some last-minute watching for the 2015 list in >.>;;

I think I was just taken aback seeing that style of wrestling on TV again, especially for the US title. I'm really digging this Kalisto title run.

Wholly agree. The dude can go in the ring, and I feel like he could really bring the excitement level for US Title matches back to the level of the open challenges, which is what we need. Just have him wrestle frequent title matches, every PPV and on TV every couple weeks or something. Let him just go out there with someone and go all out.

No to Kalisto/Neville for me. I liked it, some cool spots and nice to see Neville using his strength as the bigger guy. But it was just too short and didn't have much time to build to anything due to length and adverts. Hopefully they go again soon.

YES to Ambrose/Owens from the Rumble. Hands down the best match of the year so far.
YES to the Rumble match itself. It was the best one in years and despite it not being perfect a good Rumble is still one of the funnest and most talked about matches of the year.

NO to everything else. As much as enjoyed Charlotte/Becky, Neville/Kalisto, and Finn/Apollo, when the end of the year comes around nobody will be talking about them as among the best matches of the year.

Big NO to AJ/Jericho. I believe that the two of them have a great match in them but that was far from anything approaching a show stealer.

No to Kalisto/Neville. Decent, and I hope they go again soon. Lack of build and adverts for me too. The latter really hurt it. Started at 100 miles an hour and then adverts. Frustrating.

Yes to Bayley/Carmella. Bayley stays on top, but Carmella looked pretty great in there. Nice work by both.

Yes to Crews/Finn as well. Very interesting story that was told and I did Finns new finish.

I'm gonna say NO to Bayley/Carmella. A really good match and Carmella's best showing, but didn't quite make the cut for me.

This weekend I'm gonna rewatch all the nominated matches and make a fully formed opinion. And then I'll finally get a list updated.

No to Bayley/Carmela. Bayley will never have a bad match and it was indeed Carmellas best showing but it was nt a very memorable encounter.

Yes to Styles/Jericho from Smackdown. While it won't finish in the top 15 at the end of the year, it was a fantastic match filled with great reversals and pacing.

As it stands now, I would say Styles vs Jericho from Smackdown is the second best match of the year behind Dean vs Owens. There hasn't been many great matches yet but then again there has only been 1 ppv and no NXT specials.

Definite YES to Balor/Neville. Neville in top form and both guys getting the proper amount of time to put on a hell of a match in the ring. Seriously had me shocked at points, and Finn looked ace as well. Far better than any of their previous efforts. I knew they had it in them. One of my favorite matches of the year so far.

Guess I didn't comment on the Fastlane matches but I'll throw a YES to the Triple Threat main event. I'll also give a NO to AJ/Jericho and Owens/Ziggler from that show. Good matches, though, but not particularly memorable for me. The IC match is closer to getting the nod, for what its' worth.

All that match did was underscore just how badly they've wasted Neville on the main roster. He is an unbelievable talent.

Yes to Balor vs Neville. And my, how much more awesome isn't confident and vicious Neville compared to happy-go-lucky underdog Neville.

Only 7 people said YES to the triple threat? Sounds like we need some more participation.

Also sounds like I need to watch the Balor/Neville match.

Much appreciated, Ring-a-Ding! Was actually gonna get to it once I finished the countdown, but this'll make it much easier to keep up.

I don't know if it's because we're going through the top 25 from last year at the moment, but there really hasn't been much that's impressed me this year. Sucks that we've not had an NXT special yet. Anyway, caught up with everything apart from the Fast Lane triple threat which I'll get to tonight.

Owens/Ziggler - NO. It was good but not great - tough when they've faced off so many times recently.
Jericho/AJ - NO. It was really slow for most of it. Just wasn't very into it at all, even though AJ is very impressive.
Neville/Balor - NO. Close one but I felt like it wasn't the most compelling story and it wasn't helped by the crowd being so quiet.

Absolutely loved the Fast Lane triple threat, unsurprisingly. Brock was the best in the world as usual and Ambrose was terrific too. Brock going mental on Ambrose with those knees after Ambrose slapped(? - I think) him was incredible. Was like a less good version of the Rumble triple threat from last year.

I liked the beginning and end of the Rumble one more probably. Both are still really clear in my mind even though I haven't seen the match in a year. It's not far behind though.

Big YES to the triple threat. Really really liked it. I thought it was really well paced and made everyone look strong. Brock was as good as ever and I think Ambrose showed throughout this match what his character should be - the aggression, the desire, the facial expressions, the selling, the offence - it was all on point. Really strong showing for Reigns too I thought. Him and Brock have great chemistry and it really made it feel like a huge fight.

It wasn't quite as mad as the triple threat from the Rumble last year but I thought the three big spots were built to really well - the tables, Dean slapping Brock and Brock suplexing both of them. My only criticism is the last five seconds. It was great to see Dean taking out Roman with the chair too but if that's where you're doing the finish, don't hit him. Or just hit him once. Roman recovering instantly from the chairs AND the Kimura and to completely no sell them AND for the Spear to put Dean away when the other two got a kick out of a finisher each...that left a bit of a bad taste. Really frustrating as I thought it was near flawless up to that point.

Yeah, this. I think where it lacked the jaw dropping Rollins stuff, it made up for it with a more coherent story. A few minutes more and a better finish and it'd be right up there.

Ambrose is having a stellar year so far. Great match at the Rumble, good Rumble match showing, good TV match with Owens, MOTY candidate at Fast Lane. Looking promising with matches against Trips and Brock to come too.

YES to New Day/Y2AJ. A really excellent tag match. Probably AJ's best match in WWE so far, and New Day looking better than ever. My thoughts lifted from the RAW thread:

The match itself, while off to a somewhat slow start, turned out to be a blast, and those last few minutes were about as perfect as you can get. AJ's possibly best Springboard Reverse DDT, Kofi trying to fight out of the Walls of Jericho with Xavier pushing the ropes in, with both AJ and after Big E making the save, and that beautiful counter into the Big Ending were some obvious highlights that made the match stand out. Spots I'll remember even next year.

so? he was able to pull out a desperation finisher that didnt take any kind of convoluted set up. he sold his beatdown during and after the pin, only making it to his knees a minute and a half after the three count, selling the arm. when he finally ascends the turnbuckle to celebrate, he's got no energy and he only raises the arm that wasnt in the kimura.
