God, the commentators on ESPN are trying so hard to downplay the win, but fuck em, the red&green flies high here today.

Good stuff from Portugal. France had such a negative set-up, they played right into Portugal's hands having Matuidi and Sissoko both in midfield with Pogba sitting in front his defence miles away from where he could do any harm. No width, very little pace and they didn't try to force the issue until they went behind.

All the porkchops are just having a parade here. Cars driving down the street, flying flags and honking their horns. This is beautiful. Tried heading down to the Portuguese club but the roads are all blocked off

I'm in Fiji Peter and it's just struck me I'm a bit pissed off we're only here for two weeks instead of three. Also I'm questioning all of my life choices.

I'd love to be sympathetic but I'm playing FM watching gogglebox, so pretty sure I'd rather be in Fiji (2 weeks or 3). As For life choices you have a wife and a little one I'd say you are pretty blessed (unless I missed something in which case I apologise)

Just me that enjoyed the tournament then? Obviously there were fewer goals than usual, but I didn't feel like the quality was lower, there was just a greater emphasis on defending. There were loads of great goals, a few underdogs doing well, and while there weren't many outstanding games there weren't many shit ones either. Pretty much the only disappointment with the tournament was England, which barely even counts as a disappointment any more, and I found myself enjoying the competition much more once we went out and I could relax and enjoy games for themselves rather than with an eye on what might suit England.

I don't think it was terrible, no. Nowhere near as bad as the World Cup of 2010. Some stunning goals, just not many great games. Wales' run was a real highlight. As was the Irish beating the Italians.

I'll always watch these summer tournaments, but I'll skip the qualifiers etc.

The qualifiers are always shit but you still watch them because there's fuck all football on during those two weeks otherwise.

Three decades of abject failures, missed penalties, heartbreak, getting soaked leaving Wembley when we lost to Croatia in 2007 to fail to qualify, that goal vs San Marino and obviously getting to witness in person that 'performance' vs Iceland two weeks ago...none of it has killed my enthusiasm for England even a fraction of the amount that learning that Sam Allardyce is favourite for the England job has done.

He is the best man for the job in my opinion.

Can get players up for big games, is capable of causing a shock and has modern training methods.

One thing you will get with Allardyce is that the players will have no doubts about what their role is which is something that has been missing from the England set up for years.

Are England really so far behind that one of they key skills on the new coach must be "modern training methods"? Jesus.

It's been said over and over that England need to decide what they want to be. They need an identity at every level. If it's decided that Allardyce's miserable style is the way forward then so be it, that needs to be installed in the various set ups for years. The only person I can think of who would produce worse football is Tony Pulis though.

England are literally starting from the very beginning again though. They have zero style and identity, which was demonstrated through the nonsensical squad selection and formations this year.

They don't need style or identity. They need to put the football in the net more frequently than the opposition does. It isn't rocket science.

Is Allardyces football really THAT bad?

Yeah he likes a big man up front usually but he has shown to be partial to a maverick or two in the past especially at Bolton with the likes of Djourkaeff, Okocha, Nakata, Campo, Hierro etc.

He's a loathsome twat who has made a career out of being mates with the media who therefore never criticise him for anything. Look at the transformation at West Ham the second he left.

Sorry Beefy, could you just confirm whether you are for or against the appointment of Same Allardyce as England manager, please?

I wouldn't expect Allardyce to have a hugely negative impact on England's style of play or success, but seeing as he's unlikely to have a positive impact either I'd rather the job go to someone who wasn't such an enormous cunt. Ratko Mladic, for example.

Stilted and confused would be one answer. Utterly dependent on the players in the squad at any given time due to a total lack of cohesion at the FA would be another. The detailed answer is that England are probably best suited to a counter-attacking style given the players in the current squad, but we're not good enough at that style to beat the teams that are willing to attack us, nor good enough at the possession-based game needed to consistently put away the middling teams you need to beat to get to play the top sides at the sharp end of competitions.

The shorter answer is that we're shit. Allardyce wouldn't change that, we'd just be shit in a slightly different, probably even less entertaining way.

This is true of a lot of managers though but I'm not sure exactly where or when Allardyce should have been criticised he's done a good job everywhere he's been.

People will point out Newcastle but even then he had the best start of any Newcastle manager I think and he wasn't even there that long.

I think it's a no brainer he gets the job because as been said he has a plan in place and players will be played in their best positions. Plus he is used to working with limited players.

As for the football it's not like we are playing highly entertaining free flowing football or even have done for a while. In fact it was embarrassing watching our players trying to attempt to pass their way through teams like Spain do when we obviously weren't as skilled or able to do so.

The shorter answer is that we're shit. Allardyce wouldn't change that, we'd just be shit in a slightly different, probably even less entertaining way.
theres loads of folk who would find it entertaining, they might not be english but we'd be really really happy.

I love the acceptance of reality among a lot of England fans now that they are genuinely not very good and that's why they don't play very good or do very good. It's like they've suddenly become self-aware. Like Skynet. Only instead of raining nuclear fire down upon the earth they're going to moan like fuck about St. George's park and the lack of a winter break and the length of a season. Which really makes little difference at all.

absolutely nothing at all, it's magnificent. And even though it's only been open for about 10 minutes the usual knuckle-draggers are up in arms about the lack of quality young players coming out of it.

I was going to say something along those lines but it may have been construed as further trolling.

Also Wayne Rooney should retire now. He's finished. He's terrible. He's vile. I hope Jose shoots him behind a shed.

I don't want big Sam to get the England job for very different reasons to everyone else here it seems.

I thought of you yesterday Mik when I heard Defoe tying himself up in knots discussing the issue on 5 Live. He was caught between not wanting to piss off his current manager by saying he doesn't think he should get it, not wanting to piss off his current employers by saying he does think he should get it and the outside prospect that Allardyce getting the job might resurrect his own England career. In the end he took the easy way out and said he could do both

    Honestly, I would take that.

I feel that if we lose allardyce then we will finally go down. Can't see who we could get in.

You guys would all take him doing both jobs rather than just the England one though, for me...right?
