One of the Companions missions (Purity) is broken for me, pretty common bug by the looks of it. I had a save before I took the quest which I went back to, tried to take the quest again and in some convoluted fashion ended up without a non-broken mission save. So Illia has been dismissed with a load of stuff I gave her. I can re-load to just after I took the mission, but I can't find Illia again and apparently there's a big where she can't be recruited after she has been dismissed anyway. Pretty fucked off to be honest, I don't think I can even be arsed playing the game anymore because it's probably just going to remain slightly broken from now on. I'll try one more time to find Illia, but if I can't then I'll probably just trade this in.

So I've encountered a glitch, hopefully there is some way to correct this...

I have become a vampire. So I hear about Falion and how he can reverse it if I fill a black soul gem. Well I get the gem and I fill it, and take it back to him. He says to wait for him at the ceremonial circle at dawn. I go to the place but I'm a little early so I figure I'll go suck some blood to kill time and avoid becoming a full-blown vampire. While I'm in the house to do that I get a message that I had completed meeting with Falion at dawn (?) and now I am told to speak with him. I follow the arrow and he's at his house, but when I try to speak to him all he wants to talk about is selling me stuff or improving my conjuration skills. I want to scream to him "I AM STILL A DAMN VAMPIRE YOU SHIT" but I'm not given that option. And, well, I'm still a vampire.

Has anybody else run into this? How do I fix it?

Still waiting on the creation kit, but at least there are some mods out there. I found one called ENB that tweaks the lighting and filters and stuff and it can make the game look absolutely gorgeous. Vanilla Skyrim looks really drab by comparison. There's a bit of a performance impact, depending how you set it up, but when I kicked down to high instead of ultra it still looked significantly better than regular ultra and ran fine.

Lost everything last night. The game froze while saving. Somehow all the save files were corrupted. Had to start over. Bah.

And the Creation Kit isn't even out yet, it's only going to get crazier.

Just finished this. Liked it enough to get the full 1000g (Achievement Points).

Finished around level 63 and pretty much did everything I could before doing the final bit on the main quest. Made the final battle a bit of an anti-climax however. A few swipes from my hefty Deadric Axe and it was done.

I suppose I can put this away now until some DLC emerges.

Solid mods will probably pop up before any DLC, I imagine. The creation kit should be out in the next couple of weeks. I hear you about the anti-climax at the end, even as a tiny elf with a bow I found it pretty easy to deal with. Not that I want bosses to be Nintendo hard, but the whole final battle just felt kind of flat. I still have harder fights with the odd bandit chief. I think the scaling is still a bit wonky; bears tear me apart, bandits take a good few hits to drop dead, and big scary spectres deep in dungeons die in one or two shots.

The lighting mod I've been using has given the game a new lease of life, I'm enjoying exploring the beautiful countryside again. I also installed something to give vendors a respectable amount of gold so I don't have to spend six weeks selling shit after looting a dungeon. I feel at this rate I might as well just cheat and give myself oodles of gold and not bother picking anything up, but I enjoy the idea of actually being rewarded for my exploits. It's just that in practice, going around a dozen vendors to sell shit for 1/10th retail price every time I realise I can't walk is getting tedious.

On the bright side, I found some more Dark Brotherhood missions that were a lot of fun. I even got to try out a new technique - if you pickpocket someone and put poison into their inventory, you poison them. So when I had to deal with someone who was never left alone by a bodyguard, I slipped a paralysis potion into the bodyguard and quickly dispatched the target. Problem solving is fun.

I finished the main quest because I wanted to wrap up the game and leave it open for another play in the future with a lot to explore. It didn't go well.

One of the final fights resulted in the enemy becoming invulnerable and I had to restart the console. Good thing I looked it up.

Then in the lead up to the final quest I lost 30 minutes of saves, and it was possibly the slowest 30 minutes of the game. I think this is because there were Live connection issues and then I signed into live while playing the game, I can't think of any other reason.

The main quest is a bit underwhelming, and I understand what people mean by saying Bethesda are poor writers compared to Obsidian in New Vegas. The best parts about the game are the exploration and how well they've realised a world. People and their stories are stupider than they should be.

Does anyone else have problems with responsiveness? The two problems I found is that sometimes selecting a dialogue option would require two presses, and sometimes shouts just would not shout.

    Yeah, I have that problem.

Also, while the load time when going into a new area is enough to make me twitch, sometimes the whole fucking thing FREEZES, black screen, for two minutes and THEN loads.

    Drives me fucking BONKERS.

I went up to Windhelm, the guy asked me why a foreigner would want to join the Stormcloaks, BUT I'M A NORD, STUPID ASS.

I went to an earlier save and decided to find the greybeards instead.

I've got this Lidia broad following me around. Any reason for me to keep her around? Her mere presence irritates me.

The best thing to do to get back in is just to go after a miscellaneous quest, or go for a random stroll and stumble across something. The game can be bad for loading far too many quests onto you.

Agreed on both fronts. I found the main quest pretty underwhelming as well, especially toward the end.

I definitely have problems with the responsiveness of the UI. Selecting things in menus or dialogue options requires pressing a button multiple times quite often and my character keeps refusing to fire their bloody bow. It's been like this since I got the game. I thought it may have been a hardware issue at first but the game runs smoothly for me.

I've had an elf woman call my character, an elf, "elven dog". Um... ok.

Good grief, ally AI in this game is terrible. All they seem to do is get in your way, block doors when you're trying to move around and knock shit over when you're trying to be stealthy. And they'll murder anyone who looks at you funny, even in the middle of a town, which just makes more people try to kill you. I only bring them on dungeon crawls now, just to reduce the time it takes to kill everything, since you basically have to kill everything in every dungeon to be allowed to explore it. Lidia was my first (chortle!) but since she's a moron she ran into one of my unrelenting force shouts and was thrown down a 100 foot shaft, where she died for reals.

Yeah, I have a stupid number of quests going on, too. It's sort of a good thing and a bad thing that you can't move for finding something to do. If you go for a random stroll, you will come across interesting things and some quests. It's just impossible not to. I recommend anyone who's a bit bored with the game to just pick a direction and start walking. You'll probably remember somewhere along the way why you liked the game in the first place. I know I moan a bit about the game, but just going for a walk in it really helps. There's a lot of great stuff in there.

Me too, hadn't gotten a chance to play. Hopped on for a little bit yesterday. It was quite a bitch killing a frost troll at level 5 to get to the old bastard, but my third try did the trick.

Now I can teleport a couple of feet and yell louder. FUS ROH!

    Haven't played beyond that.

Yeah there are no credits or anything, just a quick pat on the back for saving the world and then off you go, on to the next adventure, which is probably something like gathering potatoes for an old woman on a farm.

I'd hold off on that, the Creation Kit will be out on Tuesday. Yes it's ridiculously late, but I imagine the game will suddenly have a lot of great mods appearing soon.

Only for the PC on Tuesday but I have heard that the PS3 and 360 will have some form of mod creation and integration appearing eventually. If you have it on PS3 though I wouldn't blame you for selling it or trading it in. 1.4 still doesn't fix the framerate issue. Le sigh.

Creation Kit out now, 3gb... whoo. HD textures too, hurrah!

Now just need Bert to hook me up with a US purchase at $40 instead of Australian at $60.

When I downloaded the Creation Kit it was only 40MB. I assumed that was just the installer or something but it's running already.

Where can one get these HD textures?

That stuff is awesome. The mudcrab would have been a far better end boss than Alduin, too.

I really hope a lot of that stuff sees the light of day, and frankly a fair bit of it should have been in the vanilla game to begin with. Elemental arrows shouldn't exactly be a difficult feat to pull off. Morrowind had a pretty good vampire system made much better by a free mod. Oblivion had a mod for horse combat. I'm still a bit steamed (teehee) about how useless horses are.

That this was released gives me hope they are planning on including at least some of it, and if this could be done for fun in a week, I imagine the Creation Kit is going to lead to some really amazing and useful mods, eventually.

Some of the stuff in there makes me angry it's not in the game already.

So I have installed the game but the MASSIVE list of CK mods already out makes me wonder if I should just stick it on hold for 3 years till a MEGA ULTIMATE MOD COLLECTION is finalised

With the massive amount of content already in the game, I'm not sure it's fair to say more should have been put in at release. It would have been cool, yeah, but the amount of content this game has trumps pretty much every other game ever.

It's not so much content that's the issue as quality and capabilities that are pretty basic and should have been there to start with. We have more than enough quests and creatures, and we could probably live without seasonal foliage, but that's no excuse for useless horses and features from previous games going AWOL.

Cheers. The top 2 is the kind of stuff I was looking for - with the CK being so new, the "TOP" lists just seem to be a mix of everything because people are downloading a mix of everything.

Will hook into the and get me some Skyrim over the weekend

I haven't had crashes as frequently as that but I do get the occasional crash to desktop. Fucking annoying but not sure if it is Skyrim or Steam related because I have been playing The Witcher and Dungeon Defenders and getting random crashes as well

After the opening bits, I spent a good hour just running around picking herbs and mining veins and catching butterflies and exploring and killing the occasional wolf.

Wish there was an auto run button though.

Whoops, I was just playing New Vegas, sorry. It's C in Skyrim.

Bloody drives me nuts trying to remember which game I'm in since the keys are so arbitrarily different. I keep tapping M to get my map in New Vegas as well.

Yeah, I'd be bored as hell doing that. That and it's cheap as hell. I don't necessarily think that the iron daggers method is exploiting, because, y'know I'm actually making them things.

I suppose it's useful for people playing on the PS3 or 360 since they can't access the console and might want to set up a particular character with particular skills without having to spend 100 hours on it.

The dagger thing bothers me though. I agree it's not really an exploit but it sure feels like it since the only reason you'd make those daggers is to level smithing and speech. You can't make a profit with them. If they wanted people to follow any kind of natural progression with crafting they probably should have given you a reason to do it beyond "it levels my skill". At this point I'm not sure why I don't just use the console and give myself 100 smithing since spamming daggers feels so cheap.

If you mean the 1.4 patch, it didn't fix the framerate issue as far as I know. Not sure about anything else or if there was another new patch that came out for the PS3.

I never had a problem building my character on the 360. I had a pretty good sense of accomplishment when I attempted that Blessings of Nature quest the first week I played (I bought it on opening day) and was completely annihilated by witches and fireballs that couldn't figure out the source within seconds.

Then coming back last week to that same mission at level 30 something and breezing through that part of the mission like it was nothing and finding the hagraven that was shooting the fireballs was very satisfying. More satisfying than shooting a horse for however long that took, or this other video where a guy was using Destruction Magic to nearly kill some prisoner then using Restoration magic to bring them back and repeating. Or even using the console, to me, at least seems like it would be just as unsatisfying if I had this game on the PC.

I think the only thing that I exploit is the fact that I found this ship called the Dainty Sload and one of the enemies on it carries a Scimitars (Hammerfell Curved Sword, it fits very well because my guy is a Redguard). I've gone there, killed the guy with the sword I want, took it and left without clearing the boat. Leaving the boat uncleared came in handy once when it some enemy disarmed me and I couldn't find where it dropped. I was able to go back to the Dainty Sload, and the guy with the Scimitar was regenerated so I killed him and took his sword again.

I put in my Oblivion game yesterday to see the difference and wow I can't believe how much its changed. I played like a suicidal fool in Oblivion... I had a sword and shield, but I wore a belted tunic instead of any sort of body armor.

I also noticed I was able to have a sword and shield and still use magic in Oblivion. Am I missing something in Skyrim because I don't think I'm able to do that anymore. I think it has something to do with the Shout button, on the consoles, being the same place as the magic button from Oblivion but maybe there is another button for magics other than the trigger button for when I'm armed.

All those cheats do seem to take some of the fun out of the game. My two-handed, archery and sneak are good cause I use them the most; all magic (bar destruction) is laughably low; and I'm now working on pickpocket/speech.

I'm guessing I might get some fun out of a second playthrough if I play it completely different. Bad guy mage. Awesomes.

But to cheat your way to 100 in anything just seems so hollow.

Some of them should really be an easy fix though, e.g. smithing should have diminishing returns for each item. Once you've made a bunch of iron daggers the xp from making more should be pitiful.

I agree with Bort here. If somebody wants to cheat at a single player game, what business is it of mine? Doesn't bother or affect me in the least. Besides, I believe that there are perfectly sound reasons for wanting to swiftly climb levels. Maybe you're tired of your primary character, a huge Nord warrior, and you want to try something a bit different like an Elven mage. But if you want that character to start out pretty powerful and have a backstory in mind, why should you have to trawl through another 100 hours to build it?

I'd rather fix smithing by making smithing worthwhile rather than just making the whole thing take even longer.

I forgot how brilliant the Elder Scrolls games were. I'm heading off to some mountain to meet some old guys with grey beards and have taken about 4 hours of RL time to just get to the village at the base of the hill. So many little paths branching off to investigate, wild animals to kill and skin and OO LOOK, MUSHROOMS AND BUTTERFLIES.

Favourite bits so far is the first companion quest (maybe 2nd) with Falkas and just some random cave I wandered in to and got attacked by vampires. Took a turn up one branching path earlier and got massacred by witches and something throwing fireballs at me that I never actually saw. Bookmarked for later, going to go back when I can withstand a fireball to the face and kill them all.

I updated onto the next patch and its running perfectly for me now.
The Geirmund Hall glitch was fixed, and I've not had a backward dragon in a while.

This forum also mentions a way to get rid of lag on ps3 (though I haven't had much of it and next to no freezes)

I wish the game wasn't full of so many fucking bugs and that the combat was remotely satisfying.

Other than that, I put a lot of time in this weekend and it's been brilliant. Just doing the main quest right now, though I did link up with the Dark Brotherhood. I'll hit other quests later; I need to focus on one thing at a time or I get overwhelmed and stop everything.

Is just doing the main quest going to screw anything up with the other quests (ie: civil war) afterward?

Also, why do saber toothed tigers kill me in one shot, but dragons are bitches?

"Judas, you're Dragonborn, it's supposed to be easy for you!"

    Yeah, whatever.

I've noticed a lot of enemies that are tougher than dragons. Even the odd bandit chief will hit me harder and take longer to go down. Dragons are just a nuisance, the only challenge is in their constant flying away. If you have the Dragonrend shout that's not a problem anymore either, though I suppose for a melee specialist you've always got the risk of being eaten when up close. I remember my first dragon encounter in the opening of the game and how cool it was and how scary and destructive the beast appeared to be, but as soon as you actually get to tangle with them properly, they're really not a big deal. What's worse, they turn up seemingly every couple of days. I think they really messed up the balance of the dragons - they're too easy to defeat, too annoying to deal with and appear too frequently to retain any sense of awe or specialness.

I do find combat satisfying but only ranged combat. Melee feels so... fuzzy. Picking off bandits on the parapets of a fort when crouched in the shadows along a rocky ledge is quite enjoyable, though. If you're going to be doing Dark Brotherhood quests, I recommend being pretty good with a bow. To be honest you can just run up and stab someone in the face and run away from the guards without much difficulty in most cases, but keeping your distance generally seems to work well and gives you room for a much cleaner escape. There's one mission in Solitude that I have no idea how a melee fighter would be able to handle, since the layout of the city basically funnels you into multiple deathtraps if you have guards after you. I only survived by taking out the target from far away and being close enough to the city gates to not die from arrows to the knee before I escaped.

I do like the game and I enjoy how I play it, but I have to admit there are serious issues. Melee just seems zero fun and shooting things from a distance doesn't seem to be anything but the best option in every situation. Fortunately it suits the kind of character I want to play but I do wonder how others deal with

I'm a melee monster but I've been working on my bow work because it is more fun than just holding down my power attack, killing the guy, rinse, repeat.

There's that one mission in Solitude in the main quest:

I REALLY REALLY like when dragons attack a town and all they do is fly from rooftop to rooftop breathing fire in random directions and then sitting there as you fill 'em up with a dozen arrows. Rinse, repeat.

I've read people saying backstabs are overpowered, too, but if you're able to successfully sneak up behind someone, you SHOULD be able to slit their throat and immediately kill them.

My bow skill's only in the 20s, so I've gotta work on it. I refuse to pay for training, though. Maybe I'll just shoot my horse for 6 hours. That sounds like fun.

Backstabs are only OP in the sense that sneak is a bit too easy once you level it even a little bit.

I've heard once you get your sneak high enough you can just crouch and be invisible to NPCs. Not sure if that works with enemies or not.

I've used 3 different characters now and have done a relatively good job in keeping them different from each other, except when it comes to Sneak and Archery. I just don't have the willpower not to use stealth techniques. I haven't seen many instances where running in like a maniac swinging a weapon was a good idea, unless you're just down to an enemy or two obviously. And even then the bow and arrow is preferable.

I'm trying to get to Sky Haven Temple and this fucking blood dragon keeps beating the shit out of me. I've gone WELL out of my way to try and avoid him, but he always finds me. I once stumbled upon a camp where Delphine, Esbern and some weird fire people were attacking the dragon with me, and then the dragon couldn't fly anymore so all the fire people just killed me

    Fucking hell.

I figured I had a bit of a back log with quests when all the named quests took two clicks to scroll through and all the misc ones took 3 clicks. Spent 5 hours yesterday doing nothing but misc quests and still only just got it down to 2 clicks to view the lot

Question... how do you Investigate the Bards College? That's all the quest says and the building that I am meant to go to (apparently...) is locked and requires a key to get in to. I assume I am missing something...

Sounds like a bug. Although more specifically there is someone you're supposed to speak to at the Bard's College. That was the mission that got me inside. Don't ask me how to unlock the quest though, I don't remember.

Well, I only have the Investigate Bards College misc quests that starts off (what I assume is) the longer Bards College quest line (assuming it has something like Mages, Thieves, Legion etc?). I got the quest purely by talking to a bard in a tavern, not a specific quest FOR the Bards College.

I might have to head to a wiki though I have been trying to avoid them

So being late to the Elder Scrolls party and not discovering the series until this iteration (and loving it), how possible would it be for me to go back and try Oblivion? I mean and actually enjoy it. Are the graphics and gameplay so dated in comparison that I would just be longing for Skyrim the entire time?

You should go back to Morrowind. If you have a half decent PC you'll eb able to run it. If you have a decent one there are tons of mods out there to make the graphics incredible. It's such massive game.

The game play isn't much different either, maybe a little more complex in terms of stats with stuff like Athletics thrown in (hold down sprint and jump everwhere you walk), Acrobatics (how well you fall)... and maybe a bunch of other stuff I don't remember. It has been a while...

Yeah, no dual-casting spells either. Dungeons don't get reoccupied, and Dremora have a much bigger role. Oblivion is a great game, and it's a wholly different setting from Skyrim that should be explored.

Morrowind with all the expansions is brilliant, still a game I go back to and I still find things I've missed even now, Oblivion is breath-taking at times but at times it's bloody annoying, well worth getting both though since you can pick them up for next to nothing now.

Morrowind really is fantastic and well worth getting into. The world is so different and has such a unique atmosphere. Oblivion was a very traditional sword and sorcery late-medieval setting with some Roman stuff thrown in and of course Skyrim is all very Norse and a bit Game of Thrones, but Morrowind was unlike anything I had come across when I first played it. I remember the first time I came across a stilt-strider and how deep and unique the world seemed to be.

One word of warning, though - combat is terrible. Unlike Oblivion and Skyrim, your chances of hitting something are based purely on statistics and not on collision detection, so in the early part of the game you'll have to swing about fifty times at a rat that's six inches in front of you before you hit the bloody thing. Mudcrabs will easily kill you if you have a run of bad luck. It's incredibly frustrating and I never did find a mod that improved combat sufficiently for me. So I became a thief and kept to the shadows, avoiding combat as much as possible, which is actually a pretty viable way to play the game as long as you're not interested in the main quest.

I still think Oblivion's main quest was by far the best of the series, anyway, but with 120 hours clocked in Skyrim I'm finding the sheer amount of stuff I can get involved in makes up for V's somewhat poor MQ. Also (spoilers for the MQ and the Stormcloaks/Empire/Forsworn stuff):

The combat in this game just fucking sucks.

    It just fucking sucks.

Yeah, the world is HUGE and the quest lines are appealing, but the combat just fucking sucks. It's nonexistent.

    It's not a game.

It's just, "Wander around and do this shit and then OH NO! A BAD GUY! and then stand in front of them and hit the right trigger (sometimes you might actually have to hit the left trigger to block!) or back up and hit them with your fireball magic bullshit," and oh yeah, those guys wearing armor and swords? Two hits, they're down. But that fucking SABER TOOTHED TIGER, well, don't fuck with him, because he just needs two hits on YOU.

lol the big bad dragons are bitches.

The game is just so stupid. And I use the term "game" loosely. Might as well play Myst or something.

"OH, but it will take you 3 real life hours to walk between Winterfuck and Rivershit, THE SCOPE IS AMAZING!"

Yeah, because I have 3 hours to walk around and go, "Oh, look, more mountains and foliage..." when I could, I don't know, WALK AROUND OUTSIDE INSTEAD.

    Fuck off.

I'm off to play Dark Souls as a different class, because it's an actual GAME.

Fucking bullshit scam, the Elder Scrolls series is.

Combat has long been a weak point in the Elder Scrolls series. It was basically impossible in the first two games, tedious and stupid in Morrowind, and awkward but better in Oblivion. Skyrim's combat I find to be a further improvement, but it still lacks satisfaction unless you play a very specific way, and there are far too many daft issues like dragons being easier than bears, and a bandit chief in some hovel being far harder to kill than some super spectre in a dungeon.

Yeah, it's a common complaint about Skyrim and all the Scrolls games. Personally, I just tolerate it because the rest of the game is so good if you're into that sense of exploration thing.

It can take a pretty darn long time to walk from the Catacombs to Anor Londo too. But Dark Souls has fast travel just like Skyrim does.

You don't HAVE to walk to all of these places. I end up taking a carriage so it's easier to fast travel later.

Also, I never, ever use a melee weapon. The bow and arrow mechanics are wayyyyyyy better put together.

Absolutely agreed. I've only used melee weapons if I have planned for it to be a one-hit kill or I am forced to by the circumstances of a mission (mercifully a rare occurrence). Magic's not great either, feels all a bit woolly when it comes to casting and connecting, and tends to do pretty pathetic damage. I understand I have to level my magic skills, but when you're just starting out you can throw a massive exploding lightning strike fire ball ice crystal of doom at a deer and watch it run away with half its health left. Magic should blow shit up. I feel fortunate that I enjoy playing an archer/assassin type, because that appears to be basically what the game was made for.

This game was made for stealth characters. Once you get the bonuses (15x for sneak+dagger!) there's no reason at all to go running in like a tank.

I traded this game in a while ago after my game got so bugged out that the whole atmosphere of it was just killed. The gameplay aspect is distinctly average and in no way could compensate for that. I agree that Dark Souls is a much more enjoyable game.

I agree that the bow-and-arrow system is by far superior to any other way of playing but I HATE that. I'm on my fourth character and have put in a genuine effort to make each one play and feel different but I have buckled and gone the Sneak and Archery route every time. Sometimes I'll even force myself to go charging in with a two-handed weapon or magic attack just to change things up a bit but before long it's right back to the bow and muffled boots.

Love the game but I wish the other forms of combat were more balanced than that.

I'm surprised there has not yet been a combat mod to deal with this (as far as I know). Oblivion and Morrowind had plenty.

I've been finding my own enjoyment of the game is pretty marred lately with constant crashing to the desktop. It played beautifully until 1.4 was released, and since then it has got progressively worse. I am sure some of my mods aren't helping but it seems like they will be seemingly to blame on a random basis - I install some and the game runs fine, I install another and the game crashes, I uninstall it and it keeps crashing, I uninstall one at a time until I'm back to it working again, I reinstall one at a time and don't get it crashing until a few days later when the whole process begins again. Never had this problem with Oblivion when you just extracted everything to the Data folder and your mods were right there. I think the Workshop is just constantly fucking things up.

Shield bash is way overpowered when it comes to hand-to-hand melee combat.

This is driving me nuts. Ever since 1.5 installed itself (Steam never, ever fucking remembers what I tell it) I have been having constant CTD errors when trying to load the game. Disabling the right mod will work, but it seems to be pretty much random which mod will be the one 'causing' the problem, and then the game will crash ten minutes later and refuse to load again, requiring more random playing with the mod list. Ugh. Also every time Skyrim updates it undoes my deletion of the stupid Bethesda logo video at the start of the game, forcing me to spend even longer as I keep reloading and reloading. It's by no means an important issue and I'm being a bit OTT, but fuck off Bethesda and stop modifying my files without my consent you sloppy bug-ridden bastards. Somehow the new patch has fucked up the graphics so everything flickers too. The bugs were known when the patch was in beta, but hell, they released it anyway. Le sigh.
