So I listened to Matthew Good's Ghetto Astronaut Something or whatever it was called. For reasons not known to me I was expecting a Dave Matthews type singer-songwriter dude, which I am not opposed to, but seriously how many cunts like him are out there? Anyways, the dude's voice immediately reminded me of the dude from Live. And I love everything Live did, assuming The Distance To Here was the last album they released. No songs really stood out to me as money-makers, which I suppose is a sign of a decent album as opposed to decent list of songs. Given that was his first album, I'll definitely check out more of his recent stuff

Incidentally Grim also suggested Howie Day, but I was already familiar with his work. Still, it triggered me to obtain his last album, and played it the other night when making sweet love to a lady. And for that Grim, I thank you.

Glad you liked it, mate. He is an angry canadian and a lot of his stuff is very anti-US and anti-capitalism. See if you can find 21st Century Living... I think Sancty entered it as his Miotchs Music Challenge a few weeks back - off the 2003 album Avalanche There is also a whole lot of "solo" stuff where he has dropped the Band from the name as well.

It is bloody good isn't it? Never in quite some time have I been affected by watching a film for the first time. Hopefully SCS feels the same way.

Just downloaded Strange Brew, so will report back with my findings soon. If not tonight, then over the weekend.

I watched Chopper on Monday night, so here's my review. It was pretty great, though I feel that my not knowing the history behind Chopper Read hindered the experience for me. I went and did some research after the fact, but I wish I had known all of that going in. It was a pretty great performance that overshadowed a poor production quality that even lent its own charm to the story. 7/10. Thoroughly enjoyed.

I'm available for a challenge if anyone else is.

OK, I listened to the Gang Gang Dance as per the MikeHunt challenge. It was some sort of Electro House Dance deal. Not my speed at all. I found it nearly impossible to get through.

So who is next for me then?

Okay, so I watched Mary and Max as per Alex's challenge and holy shit was it not what I was expecting. When I heard it was an animated film from Austrailia I guess I was expecting something lighthearted, but this was DARK. Without spoiling anything the gist is that a young girl and an older eccentric dude start exchanging letters by sheer chance and they help each other through life here and there with numerous awful fucking things happening to them. The movie had what I would have to say is a wonderfully beautiful bittersweet ending, but getting there was almost hard with how sad the characters were the whole time.

On the whole i'd have to call it a very good animated film, but fuck, man. Don't watch it with a gun close to hand.

The_Mike issued a challenge to me to watch Serenity which is a movie continuing the TV series Firefly.

Having seen neither I went in not really knowing what to expect. I actually didn't know if the movie came first or the tv series, but knew it was a Joss Whedon film so I figured it couldn't be all that bad. I also knew Summer Glau was in it

Much to my surprise there were a few actors in it that I really like (Nathan Fillion and Adam Baldwin) so I actually got quite excited for the movie as it began.

For me there was obvious Lucas/Spielberg influences as the movie had the sci-fi space feel and spaghetti western feel to it. Nathan Fillion's character was very much a Han Solo meets Indiana Jones kinda guy and even though he wasn't really a "good guy" he had me rooting for him right off the bat.

I would get into the plot but there is a shitload to explain. I mean a shitload. You have an entire population leaving a planet, getting into a new star system, two sides emerging and fighting over politics. Meanwhile, you have River (Summer Glau) whose flashbacks seem to weave in and out of reality to tell her story plus the entire crew of Serenity. Yeah...a lot and while I enjoyed the movie quite a bit I am not going to spend 30 minutes going into detail. I definitely see why it is a fanboy/girl flick as there is just so much info to digest it is ridiculous. Also, from what I read on wiki Joss cut down the screenplay quite a bit so he could have easily done a 3 hour movie or so.

All in all it was a very enjoyable flick. Not much negative to say about it unless I want to nitpick. I will say Fillion and Baldwin helped carry the movie quite a bit but I will also say I am very biased towards the two. I will definitely check out Firefly now and see how much more I get wrapped up into the series.

    Great recommendation Mike

Who is ready for a challenge?

So it seems this is the list for right now (at least as far as I can tell from my last page)

    Cewsh
    GBF
    Judas
    Turdy
    Virm

I am going to ponder this list and check thru my archives and see if there is something I want to directly challenge someone with. If someone challenges me before then...so be it.

Take initiative folks and lay down the challenge.

To be fair, a lot of the plots are easily picked up by people who have watched the television episodes, but I can completely see how it'd be a lot for someone who is using this as an entry point.

I have challenged Cewsh and we are currently in the midst of figuring out our challenge.

I will most likely make him watch all 66 years of All My Children.

I was challenged by Virm to watch The Stuff (1985). Chocolate Chip Charlie is awesome. That is all.

Seriously now, this film was, at its core, kinda fun. It was unashamedly cheesy and 80s, with a premise and plot directions so absurd that it was into comedy territory, yet peppered liberally with scenes of horrific violence (via dated but quite interesting effects). I liked that at the beginning, two characters came across the Stuff laying in the snow, and decided the natural thing to do was to eat it. It wasn't a story that was going to meander around trying to justify why shit was happening, it just was. It would have been fun to watch with some friends, I think, and in something unusual for most 80s films, the kid managed to not be annoying. I liked the main character Mo, too; he followed an interesting arc from unapologetic douchebag to patriotic hero.

It definitely isn't the type of film I would have normally chosen to watch. I like 80s stuff, but not horror, and despite being a bit of a sci-fi nerd the whole MST3K vibe tends to turn me off from films unless I'm watching them with other people specifically for a laugh. But it was interesting enough to keep my attention, despite TV-movie quality writing and effects at times, and ultimately was entertaining. I'm not a convert to this type of film, but it was worth it to try something new.

So I'm also in the pool for a new challenge now.

Found myself with a lot of free time this weekend so I read my way through Neverwhere.

A brief review. It was a book that I found entertaining, although if it was a long running series I'm not sure I would pick up the following books. It's not that I found it overly difficult to come to grips with some of the things in the books, I understand fantasy. I just found there were some things that were introduced that were unnecessary an example being the Velvets. I also don't know if I really liked some of the author's style of writing in certain places.

But I did enjoy the book overall. 3.5 out of 5 I'd say.

And don't feel you have to rush Mik, I just had the time and knew I wouldn't have the time again for a while.

I've downloaded the programmes. May or may not get time to get through them this week as I'm pretty busy, should get a couple of them done at least though. Either way you can go back in the pool.

I think that Neverwhere is a nice little book. Nothing incredibly or life-changing but its a quick fun read. I figured that if you liked it, you could give a try to some of Gaiman's other books, particularly American Gods. But thats up to you.

Okay, so just got done watching Strange Brew. When I saw that it had Rick Moranis in it, I was hyped as I love him. That was one of the weirdest films I've ever seen, wish I was stoned when I watched this. Not quite as funny as Moranis in Spaceballs, but it was a pretty funny flick though, will spoilerise the next bit just in case

So yeah, glad I gave this a go. It was a fun way to kill a Sunday afternoon.

I'm also available to be challenged now.

I'm honestly shocked that there's any way that anyone hasn't ever heard either of those albums just by accident.

I have one more episode of Nathan Barley left, and have now effectively stretched what could have been a 2 1/2 hour challenge out for about 20 days. The holiday season is upon us and all that, but I can certainly take a half hour at some point tomorrow to finish and then get started anew.

Yeah, we've both heard the others' suggestion on the radio a bit but never got into the whole album. I very rarely buy albums anyway, I'm happier with selected songs I like (not necessarily the singles) rather than a whole disc/download where I ignore half of it. Fallen is a CD that I can't find a skippable song on, though. A lot of people don't much like Evanescence, and it's fair enough to say their two big singles were played to death for a time, but I just love that album.

I liked what I have heard of Gorillaz so far as well (and liked Blur back in the day) so I suppose I am not wading too far out of my depth here for a challenge, but it's introducing us both to something we probably otherwise would have never gotten around to listening to properly. Shouldn't take us long to get through the cds either.

I'm the exact same Mike, I very rarely listen to whole albums, just songs I like.

I'm going to Asda's tomorrow anyway to do a bit of birthday shopping for the niece, so I'll see if I can pick it up on the cheap as opposed to downloading it as my laptop can be a bit temperamental.

Will probably take me a few days to actually get round to it though.

So, at son_of_foley's request, I jumped in to Willy Mason's solo albums - Where the Humans Eat and If the Ocean Gets Rough.

Not really sure if my mind is made up yet. I like the music but his vocals are just so flat. There are a few songs that I quite like (but couldn't tell you what they are called) and one of them even had a bit of a Johnny Cash sound to it but, overall, I was a bit disappointed. I'll keep it on the mp3 player and listen to it back and forth to work this week and hope it grows on me but after the first up awesomeness that Simmo dished up by Ash Grunwald, I am a little underwhelmed by this one.

I still love you though, sof.

So the legend that is Badger challenged me to listen to Demon Days by Gorillaz.

It was pretty damn good. Not quite awesome but a really solid, enjoyable album and most of the tracks I will be glad to have popping up on my iPod from now on. A couple of tracks were a bit rap-heavy for me, it tends not to be my thing, but even that was not unenjoyable. A really nice album and I'm glad to have been challenged to listen to and and have more tracks in my collection.

I finally finished the west wing.

It was good but nothing heaps special. As I said I have watched quite a number of the episodes and it was the first time ive ever sat down and watch them in one clean go. Worth watching but its not the wire or anything. Bit silly.

I've listened to Mary's Challenge. Brad Sucks.

I've kind of been back and forth for the most part. Never to a point of 'I don't like this' but more of 'This is kind of meh'. I do enjoy listening to his music when it's on, but when it's over I find myself not remembering anything. Nothing really sticks out, and therefore it kind of just goes in one ear and out the other. Which I do find weird because as I said, it's not bad music. I think I'll go through it again at some point soon. It was an enjoyable suggestion at the time Mary.

Had some marking to do, so turns out I got chance to finish The League faster than I expected.

Hadnt read anything about it before/during watching, so have just gone to have a look now. Rather liked it all in all, some good gags, good characters, hot women, funny situations. I thought that it was a little amateurish in writing and in acting, but then I read that it was only semi-scripted, so perhaps that explains that. I'm not sure what to do with it now...does the show stay good/get better? It seems kind of one concept and its hard to know how it can maintain the premise for too long.

I'm back in the Challenge pot.

OK I'll do the Nas album and will listen tonight. I have Nastradamus on CD single. This might be predictable but you can go for The Holy Bible by the Manic Street Preachers. I had a quick search and couldn't see you post anything on them ever before in here so you may not have heard this.

Glad to see another satisfied customer, that's 3 now if you include virm's buddy. Hopefully it'll be 4 once SCS gets done with Harry Brown.

Hope to have mine done by the end of the week, got wrestling and stuff to catch up on first.

I'm glad you like it. It was one of those where the more I thought about it after I gave it to you, the less I thought you'd like it. I thought it was possible that I only enjoyed it so much because I know all about the craziness of Fantasy Football in North America and since I didn't imagine there's anything to that level by you I thought it might be just Yank humour so to speak. To be fair I haven't seen the second season yet myself so I can't tell you how well it continues but some of the Americans might have.

I am also in the Challenge pot.

100% agree. It's much like Office (US) or Parks & Recreation used a 6 episode first season to lay down the basic concept but neither show really got its act together until the 2nd.

Plus they have a full 13 episode season now rather than what seems like a 'trial season'.

True story the music club I was going to make the thread for (that I mentioned earlier in the thread) the first album I was going to do was either Illmatic or Endtroducing.

So I guess the next person I challenge may be getting endtroducing.

I am about halfway through Holy Bible and I am enjoying it. My girlfriend likes it more than I do I think.

I can see why Aussie Outlaw used to tell me to listen to it all the time.

Just finished Harry Brown. I thought it was pretty good, reminded me a bit of Bronson's Death Wish character. It was nice seeing Michael Caine in the lead role, it's been a while since I've seen him do more than just supporting. On the negative side, I did find it a bit hard to keep track of which gang member was which as they really didn't do much to distinguish themselves.

Would definitely recommend this film to anyone who like vigilante movies.

I am quite predictably really loving Illmatic and am now giving it another go so will review in full later. A few lines made me burst out laughing and I'm not quite sure whether they should have done. The thing with this type of music is that if it is good I know I will like it, but I just don't have enough of it in my friendship group or in the music magazines/literature I read to get too much into it.

Thus far there hasn't really been a song I would skip yet which is quite a phenomenal shout for an album I wouldn't have listened to before.

I an glad you are enjoying the Holy Bible. I thought it would fit quite aptly to your view of the world.

Yeah I really enjoyed it. Aussie Outlaw used to tell me to listen to it at least once a week for about a year. I will be giving it another play through later on to get a better feel of it.

Alright, a few days too late, I have wrapped up "Nathan Barley".

Frankly, I loved it. I would suppose that this could be considered a major piss-take at many American television trends, but in the end, I was reminded of a far more slackerish, stoned version of "The Office", whichever version you choose. I found this a fucking brilliant parody of just about everything that was going on in British pop culture at the time, and yet I don't know a damned thing about what was going on in British pop culture at that time.

I would hope that Nicholas Burns hasn't fallen off of the radar completely in the old country. It takes a large amount of talent to play dumb with such effectiveness.

I'm genuinely glad to have signed on for this challenge as a result of this much laughter. I thank you, Sheldon, and I do hope you're enjoying my show as much as I enjoyed yours.

Anyhow, I'm back in, but be advised you're being assigned a book. Anyone?
