    Batman: Arkham Asylum

Game Informer subscribers are in for a real treat this month. We’re proud to bring you the world-exclusive first look at Batman: Arkham Asylum from Rocksteady Studios and co-publishers Eidos and WBIE. This completely original title explores Gotham City’s darkest location, the infamous Arkham Asylum. But as a routine prison transfer goes wrong, the Joker sets his demented plan into action and Batman comes face to face with an army of his worst enemies. In a dark and gritty setting reminiscent of Bioshock (with a story co-written by Paul Dini), Arkham Asylum is setting the stage for a true-to-character Batman game.

Awesome. Batman doesn't have the best record with video games, though.

True stuff. But fuck it, I'll bite on this one, until it starts to show me otherwise.

Edios did Tomb Raider, right? How have the latest games in that series turned out?

So I guess this is the thing that Gary Oldman said he did some voice work for?

Right now I'm placing Lego Batman and Robin a bit higher due to how much I loved Lego Star Wars. But this could be decent. I just hear Bioshock and I get bored to tears.

Nah that game was unfortunately dropped after all, last I heard

Hope they pick it up again now that the movie was a gigantic success, I want to play in the Nolan-Universe. Not too interested in this game.

Last I heard, it was being developed to coincide with the DVD release.

Since when has Croc ever been 15 feet tall? I know he's become more reptilian in the comics, but I don't recall him ever being the size of The Hulk.

He's always been big, not THAT big but big. Personally I think he looks incredible. The game from what Game Informer says is an over the shoulder view, looks similar to RE4, but the combat doesn't appear to be that way.

I'm the first person to say stay away from games based on a franchise that sells itself but uh. . .this looks REALLY cool. And the Predator fighting style has me excited (and at at the same time I know it won't work.)

I like how Paul Dini is on board for the story...
He wrote some great episodes of the nineties series, including "Heart of Ice" and "Mad Love"...

New trailer for the game, dosn't contain a massive amount of gameplay footage however.

And is it me, or does Conroy and Hamill's voice work sound...a bit underwhelming here?

Yeah the voice just didnt...fit at parts. Hopefully the parts im thinking off they just overdubbed some sound bytes over footage.

I really hope this game doesnt suck. Its one im keeping on my radar for this year

It might very well be. If i hadnt already seen the Croc shots id guess it's him as parts loook scaly and his finger nails sharp etc. An Amygdala appearance would be cool. Nice spot.

    IGN is convinced it's Doomsday.

Even though they gain some credibility by claiming Doomsday wouldn't make any sense, it's nuts that the supposed "Batman nut" analyzing the trailer didn't even think of Amygdala.

I'm fine with the grey suit, but did they really need to add the underwear trunks? I thought we've moved passed that. Anyway, game trailer looks cool thanks for posting it Izzy.

That's still very much what he wears in almost all non-movie iterations...
Since the game isn't based on the "Dark Knight" film, he's wearing what he always wears...

Well they stopped using the underwear trunks back in the 1989 Batman movie which was obviously 20 years ago, so I just figured the comics would of stopped at some point during the last 20 years.

Though in the Batman and Robin movie it looked like him and Robin had on silver thongs. So I'm atleast grateful that they didn't give him a thong over the suit.

well it wasn't 'they' who stopped using the trunks. DC comics always used them, never stopped. whoever designed the batsuit in the 1989 film decided to go without them, and considering each of the following three films were sequels directly attached to that film, it made sense for those to have the same kind of suit. nolan's batman is ground even more in reality, so having the trunks would be silly. the animated series, which started three years after the burton film, used the 'classic' batman look with the trunks. there's no reason for anybody to stop depicting him wearing trunks.

Has there ever been a really good Batman game?

I had the game of the film on the megadrive and remember it being mentally hard. Apart from that I can't remember a good Batman game...

    This game looks stunning.

I hope there's some kind of open-world skyscraper level near the end because I don't like games that just have cluttered indoor settings.

PS - Batman NES is still my favorite.

    First gameplay demonstration:

Looks more and more fun the more I see of it. I already had high hopes, but the variety in combat is exceptional.

Looks more and more fun the more I see of it. I already had high hopes, but the variety in combat is exceptional.
    That looks immense.

I really hop this game is as ace as it looks.

We've long been denied a kick ass Batman game.

I read somewhere that the perfect Batman game would be like a modern day Assassins Creed. That sounded like a brilliant idea to me

Assassins Creed was fine, it was just very repetitive is all.

But you get the basic gist of what I was saying....

This game on the other hand, looks friggin awesome

the demo for this is out on the ps3, i believe. don't know about the 360, but i played it on the ps3 in best buy this afternoon.

the gameplay is really, really fun, and quick to get a hang out. pulling off combos inside a group of thugs, blocking attacks and countering strikes as batman is unbelievably entertaining. and the graphics are great, so gritty and dank and dark. seeing holes ripped into the batsuit and cowl during a close up after dispensing of a group of henchmen adds to the overall atmosphere and is a wonderful touch.

    cannot wait for the release.

It's not up for download yet, but there have been numerous reports saying that Gamestop and a few other stores have demo booths available. It will more than likely be put up for download soon though since it's in the publisher's best interest to promote the game.

one thing i forgot to mention were the slow motion 'takedowns,' i guess you could call them. after a string of counters and strikes, usually when you're about to put down a baddie for good, everything goes slow-mo and you get a great shot of bats roundhouse kicking a guy upside the head or doing a flipping heel kick into the crown of a slumped over henchmen. completely badass. allowing the thugs to surround you and inch closer, only to spin your cape and stun a few, while lunging at the closest opponents and taking them out is so rewarding.

god damn, if the rest of the game is half as good as that silly training level...

for anybody with a ps3, the joker will be a playable character for that system, exclusively.

i'm planning on getting a ps3, and that version of the game, but this just kind of seals the deal.

If it turns out to be more than just a character skin then I may buy it on PS3 but as Alf points out how can challenge rooms work with two completely different characters? They would have to be designed with their two natures in mind and since this seems last minute I'm going to hold a skeptical stance on this until I find out more.

Didn't they put the Green Goblin ins the PS3 version of Spider-man 3?

I assume it'll work like that, different character, different ways to get around the same obstacles.

I don't find it that important though, I mean who would want to be anyone but BATMAN FFS!

obviously once you unlock the ability to be the joker, the requirements for the level will change.

and how does this seem 'last minute?' there's still two months left before the release, and they could've been working on and planning to include this feature all along, but just decided not to blow their loads by announcing everything all at once.

Ok the last minute comment was a bit unfounded but since so little is known about it at this point you can't say for certain that the requirements will change. All that is known about this news is that Joker will be a playable character in the challenge rooms exclusively on PS3. Whether or not that turns out to be an enjoyable feature or not remains to be seen, hence my current skepticism.

considering the detail they've put into the game, i don't see why they'd throw in such a completely useless feature.

and considering all we have is an announcement he'll be playable, i don't see where there's any room for skepticism yet. we don't know enough. you're just speculating.

Regarding the question on whether or not this was Amygdala, a recent interviews puts a very big doubt on this.

This version of Bane seems generally intelligent, but completely enraged to a fault...
He's not only larger than his comic book counter part, but he's a lot angrier too. (Though it could be the dosage)

Coupled with his "wolfman syndrome" we saw from the previous trailer, I kind of like the new angle...

I was totally wondering how i'd divide my gaming time between this and Ghostbusters, so I suppose at least that solves one problem.

Besides, if the delay is to make the game even better, I can deal with it

with e3 comes a bunch of new content.

trailer for the ps3 exclusive playable joker:

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwmffZ2O944[/ame]

looks like that'll be fun. also like the 'let's finish this!' line. sounds very ledger-ish, which is something i'd definitely welcome into the mark hamil joker.

and the first 15 or so minutes of gameplay:

The delay is quite the pain in the rear. Having it come out in the summer would leave me some free time to sink my teeth into it for about 6 weeks. Coming out in (basically) Sept. doesn't leave me much free time to play it. Frankly, it's the only game besides Uncharted 2 that I'm looking forward to the rest of the year. Everything else I wanted in '09 is already out.

EDIT: I forgot Modern Warfare 2 and WWE 2010, but the point still stands, there's not much else coming out this year and I wish it was all spread out a little more. Now everything I want for the year is coming out within the same 3 months and I'm left with nothing of interest to play this summer.

The Collectors Edition looks cool. I might get it. For only £20 more.

The collector’s edition of Batman: Arkham Asylum, features a full array of iconic collector’s items, including:

    • 14" Batarang with stand
      • Matches the Batarang’s in-game design

    • Arkham Doctor’s Journal
      • 48 pages of notes on Arkham’s inmates

    • 2 Sleeve Digi-pack, including:
      • Game disc
      • Behind-the-scenes DVD

    • Code for downloadable Challenge Map
      • Exclusive “Crime Alley” map, available immediately
      • Full-color Manual
Although I would be tempted to start throwing the Batarang at my foes.

That's one of the main reason why I'm buying the collector's edition.
I know I'm gonna break it in a day though.

Hey did anyone else pre-order it from Gamestop?
I guess you're suppose to get a code for free DLC, but I never got a code in the email.

Or do I get the code when I pick the game up?

I'd imagine that stuff comes when you pick it up. Like me snazzy Ryu headband for Street Fighter IV.

The Gamestop free challenge map has been announced. It's called Dem Bones. You're in a Graveyard and you have to fight skeletons and Scarecrow. To see how scarecrow looks just move your mouse of the giant pre-order now button and he slides out from the side.

    He looks pretty badass
