I don't see why so many folks (not just here) dislike the Bruce Timm inspired alternate costumes. I love 'em. I can't imagine using them in my initial playthrough, but the juxtaposition of gritty realism and chunky gaudiness will inspire me to play it again.

Brilliant wee video showing off how large the city actually is. Lots of glidey-grappley action:

Arkham City will have a fourth playable character in challenge maps...

    http://www.g4tv.com/games/xbox-360/6...best-the-bats/

When we asked Dax Ginn from Rocksteady during our Gamescom 2011 demo about a curious box we saw indicating that you'd be able to select another character besides Batman, Catwoman, and Robin, Dax pointed up in the corner and said "Hey! What's that up there?!" and then vanished. So look for additional characters to be announced or kept secret up until launch. Our money is on Nightwing or Huntress, but c'mon Bat-Mite!
    I'm guessing Nightwing or Joker...

perhaps bane? would make sense given he's an ally during part of the main story, plus it'd be yet another character that handles different, which they seem to be pushing.

I can't see Bane in a stealth challenge...
They made him map breakingly big...

The reason I'm suggesting Joker is they've already designed him for challenge maps from the last game...
They have those goofy Joker fight animations and remote control teeth mechanics sitting around that they can expound upon...

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwbN3y587kw"]Batman: Arkham Asylum - Official Play As The Joker Trailer[/ame]

And the Tim Drake Robin suggests Nightwing may be in...

    :::UPDATE FROM GAMETRAILERS ON SPIKE:::

    - Batman will gain "freeze pellets", which will allow him to freeze enemies in place. He can throw up to three at once. He can shatter frozen enemies (non fatally, the ice breaks). He can also use the freeze pellets to create an ice flow, and he can use the Bat Claw to pull himself and the ice flow along the water.

    - The REC (Taser Shotgun) can also be used to power devices like elevators and electro magnets for puzzle solving.

    - Deadshot is in Arkham City as one of the side missions. He looks kind of like he does in Gotham Knights, except with the bandages replaced by a yellow and black design, and he will challenge Batman's forensics abilities, such as tracing bullet trajectories. Deadshot has snuck his way into Arkham and has a list of targets he's been hired to kill.

Impressions of One Hour of Gameplay...

Batman: Arkham City - 1 Hour Gameplay Impressions

    Dave Cook

    Feature

An explosive hour of gameplay with the Dark Knight

    Published on Sep 30, 2011

Batman sits perched on the lip of a dilapidated tower block in the heart of Arkham City, looking out across the polluted crime-addled streets below. After just narrowly rescuing Catwoman from execution at the hands of the maniacal Joker, our hero is hot on the lunatic's trail.

To the bottom of our screen, a prompt beckons us to glide down to the city streets below, but we look out cautiously, surveying the landscape for the best route to Joker's lair. The scene is overwhelming, and our guide, Rocksteady's Dax Ginn, urges us to take the plunge.

Spotting an adjacent rooftop in front of us, we press A and we swoop into the perilous sprawl below. Welcome to Arkham City, home to what is confidently one of the greatest sequels of the generation.

    The plot

Bigger location, bigger in scope. This has been the direction for Rocksteady Studios since development started, and if you're a fan of Batman, as well as the rogues gallery of villains out to kill him, then you'll be on cloud nine with Arkham City. While our whopping hands-on session begins a few missions into the plot. We're given a little refresher to set the stage.

Batman: Arkham City opens with the player controlling Catwoman. Two-Face is out to publicly execute her to gain major kudos in the criminal underworld, and Batman is on hand to save her hide.

However, mere moments after a daring rescue, Joker tries to assassinate her with a sniper rifle from a nearby bell tower, and tracing the bullet trajectory to the church, finds the abandoned gun rigged to blow.

Smelling a rat, Batman hacks into the weapon and finds a radio frequency that traces back to Joker's lair. The chase is on, and it's at this point we take control and experience, first hand, why Batman: Arkham City is shaping up to be nothing short of a revelation. Without further messing around, we'll cut right to the action.

    Getting Around

Arkham City couldn't be further removed from the claustrophobic, labyrinthine network of Arkham Asylum. It's absolutely massive, and houses many designated turfs that are under control by each villain.

As the whole city is essentially one big penal colony, you can't traverse the main walls without getting gunned down by police watchtower guards. It's an obvious fencing mechanic, but it makes sense in this world.

Moving across the city at speed is a pleasure, and you really do feel as agile and as tactical as Batman himself. You can glide off high vantage points to kick enemies below, or use the grapple gun to zip line up to ledges. Holding down the glide button mid-zip line will thrust Batman into the air, giving you a jolt of height to scale the city further.

Using Batman's frequency scanner, we start zoning in on the sniper rifle's radio signal. But thanks to some incredibly smart stage design, and tell-tale graffiti, we realise we're getting dangerously close to Joker territory and even closer to kicking the hornet's nest.

The closer you get to a villain's lair, enemies that once had baseball bats and lead pipes, now wield savage assault rifles capable of tearing Batman apart in mere seconds. Bad times.

By using cover and heading to high ground, we manage to avoid alerting the mass of thugs guarding the lair, and we zip line up to the roof to pinpoint the radio signal. It turns out that Joker has been hiding out in Sionis Steel Mill and is desperately sick following his Titan overdose at the end of Arkham Asylum.

His deranged squeeze Harley Quinn has been kidnapping Arkham City's medical staff to force them into curing his disease, and it's our job to try and recur the doctors and take down the Joker before he recovers.

    Inside The Lair

Once inside the steel mill, Arkham City falls back into the tense claustrophobia of the first game. It's a maze of lava infested pump rooms, dark metallic corridors and wider chambers suitable for stealthy 'Predator' sections. Clambering our way down the vast chimney stack, it's clear that environmental hazards will play a bigger part in Arkham City.

Making use of loose walkways and rubble, we navigate our way down the plant while avoiding the searing hot lava below. Some walkways are red hot, so Batman cools them down using the Bat Claw to open some nearby water ducts.

The way Rocksteady has blended navigation, puzzles and Batman's gadgetry together makes for a formula not too dissimilar to both the Metroid and Castlevania series, which is no bad thing in our book.

Venturing deeper into the complex, there are many small puzzles that task Batman with hitting door switches with his Batarang throwing blades.

The mechanic remains mostly unchanged from Arkham Asylum, but you can now 'hip fire' at speed, which locks onto nearby puzzle elements or the closest enemy. It's much slicker, and removes the need for precise third-person aiming.

Spotting a patrol armed to the teeth, we decide to play it safe; taking to the air ducts in an attempt to avoid confrontation. It's also wise to keep Batman's detective vision on while faced with enemies, as thugs wielding firearms are highlighted in orange. These are the guys you definitely want to take down stealthily.

    Combat

But then again, while the stealth approach can be fun, getting up close and personal can be even sweeter. Rocksteady's combat mechanic in Arkham Asylum was ace, and it really nailed down Batman's penchant for quick, disarming strike and brutal takedowns. Arkham City keeps most of the mechanic intact, but adds in a few new tricks too.

Sneaking up behind the two guards with rifles, we hammer them with a simultaneous double takedown, smashing their heads together in a brutal fashion. The key here is to get in close, take someone down and use your grapple gun to zip-line back to the shadows before anyone knows you were there.

Again, is the same formula as the first game, but the enemies can't be shaken off as easily this time, and unexpectedly, we notice that the thugs have one of Arkham City's medics held hostage in a room in the corner of the chamber.

If they see Batman, they'll kill her, so we take to the rafters swooping down on stray guards and using air vents to sneak up behind goons undetected.

If you've played Arkham Asylum, chances are you will be familiar with this set-up. Nothing much has changed, but then again, the format worked so well first time around, Rocksteady would be mad to dick about with it now. After we save the medic, we spot one of Arkham City's newest gadgets lying on a table; the Remote Electrical Charge, R.E.C Gun.

    Those Wonderful Toys

Yep, we said gun. It's a cardinal sin to give Batman a firearm, giving his distaste for them, but hold your horses, it's not a lethal weapon. Instead, it's more of a puzzle device, and a bloody neat one at that. Aiming the R.E.C at a nearby shutter control panel, we can open and shut the door at range. So far, so basic.

But you can also use the R.E.C to magnetise metallic objects, opting to either pull or repel other items in the vicinity. We eventually work our way to a large warehouse floor, complete with long hooked chains hanging from the ceiling. Above us is the barred doorway to Joker's private quarters, which are completely sealed.

Magnetising a girder with the R.E.C, we use a positive charge to pull the chain in, and then switch to a negative charge to repel it at speed. Repeating the process a few times builds up momentum, and eventually the large iron hook smashes open the door to Joker's room above.

We're in! Well, we would be if it wasn't for the 20 guards who come spilling out of the room. One of the gang members is a complete monster wielding a sledgehammer. Using the R.E.C, we shock the thug, which sends his body spasming and his arms flailing, causing him to accidentally batter nearby enemies with his weapon in the process.

With confusion in the ranks, we quickly dispatch the crowd with quick jabs, counters and disarms. Batman can also stun enemies with a few quick swipes of his cape, opening up opportunities to unleash bigger strikes.

After cape-stunning the large goon, a prompt appears for us to spam the attack button, unleashing a massive flurry of punches, which sends our combo into overdrive.

Spoilers Ahead (no really, skip to the next section if you hate spoilers)

The Killer Sequel? (no spoiler here, we promise)

When Batman: Arkham City was first announced, we were excited, yet cautious of Rocksteady's ability to trump its stellar work in the first game. After all, Arkham Asylum was only the studio's second title since it was formed, but an immense one at that.

After playing this extensive slice of the core plot, we came away confident that not only will Arkham City surpass the original in every way, but that it will be a strong contender for 2011's game of the year.

With at least 40 hours of gameplay promised, a wide range of challenge rooms, and hundred upon hundreds of Riddler trophies for you to find, there is real substance beneath Arkham City's grimy veneer.

Rocksteady looks set to deliver an experience that will consume your life for months after launch, and the fact that the team produced Arkham City in the same time as the first game is nothing short of incredible. It's simply stunning.

The studio has truly done the Dark Knight's legacy proud by sticking to the gothic style of the comics, as well as delivering the explosive action and thrilling stealth you'd come to expect from the franchise. It's the mother of all super hero games, and best of all, it's only a matter of weeks away.

PC Delay is to make Arkham City run smoothly on PCs...

    http://www.gamepro.com/article/news/...says-director/

PC Arkham City will be 'Worth the Wait,' Says Director

Speaking at the Eurogamer Expo this weekend, Arkham City game director Sefton Hill assured PC gamers that the delay to their version of the game would be worth it.

PC Arkham City will be 'Worth the Wait,' Says Director

Rocksteady and Warner Bros. haven't yet given a solid reason for the delay to the PC version of Batman: Arkham City, but game director Sefton Hill told Eurogamer over the weekend that the wait would be worth it.

"We got a lot of credit on the first one, about how well it played on the PC, and how well-refined the controls were," said Hill. "It's because part of our attitude is always to listen to those people. We want to make the best game we can for all SKUs."

Hill explained that while the Xbox and PS3 versions are being optimized to run "super smoothly," the PC version will benefit from higher detail textures and a "more richly realized world." All of the game's assets are originally created at a super-high resolution and then adjusted according to the destination platforms. The PC version, it seems, will feature textures that look pretty close to the original artwork -- assuming your rig's up to the challenge.

"The wait will definitely be worth it," said Hill. "The PC version has just been pushed back, but it's only by a couple of weeks, so hopefully no-one will be too upset about it. We're working as hard as we can to get it out as soon as we can."

Arkham City is out on October 18 on consoles, and early November on PC. Meanwhile, the Mac version of Arkham Asylum, City's predecessor, is set to finally release on October 13.

The German Gaming Publication Play3 gave Arkham City a 92 out of 100...
ConsolPLUS also gave it a 92, citing too many characters as a negative, with many big characters playing small roles. They also apparently weren't impressed with the boss battles. Also, it keeps reminding you of the main mission on the radio if you go off to do side missions, which can be annoying...

Personally, too many characters sounds like a good thing to me, and boss battles were never the Arkham series strongsuit...
If I'm bothered too much by the mission reminders, I'll just wait until after I beat the main story to do the side missions. It's been confirmed that the city is still open to you after you beat the story...
If that's the worst criticisms you got...

I still have Arkham Asylum happily sitting on my shelf... I've played the first hour of the game a couple times, and I keep starting over. I'll play it properly coming up soon, and will probably pick this up around Black Friday/Christmas time if there's a good deal on it.

Speaking of pre-orders, what's everyone going for?

I was going to go for the Robin Challenge Maps, as I'm not bothered about extra skins at all (can't imagine ever using them more than once for 5 minutes for the novelty) whereas the Robin pack is added gameplay.

Although for the Robin pack it seems like a fiver more so technically I could just buy it at RRP and get a skin with it and download Robin later whenever he's released for about a fiver anyway.

Robin has "character maps" which essentially mean they have a challenge mode where you have to finish an objective, but playing as Robin.

You can't play as Robin in the main story, you can play as him in one of the stealth/beat em up missions that are separate to the main game.

Here is an example of a Joker specific 'character map' that the PS3 version of the first game had (and for some fucking shit reason the Xbox did not)

I know we've not even got into Arkham City yet, but where next for the franchise? Because I mean, surely they keep going. And surely the next step is opening up all of Gotham?

Obviously they'll cap off this series as a trilogy. We have yet to see photos of Clayface, Ra's Al Ghul, Hush, and with Solomon Grundy in this game, don't underestimate the chances of other Rogues of the Justice League making an appearance in a possible third installment of this series - people like Deathstroke, Toy Man, etc.

If they do a third game, which is highly likely but will be extremely hard to top, I definitely see them opening up all of Gotham ... I would love to see a "No Man's Land" style story-arc, big-ass earthquake rocks the city, Arkham City gets destroyed and the inmate break free. It's basically a free-for-all now as all the villains vie for control of Gotham; or you could just do the entire Hush/Jason Todd storyline, since, if I remember correctly, a lot of villains were actually tied to that storyline. I would love to see Catwoman return in the next game (maybe have HER face the villains not linked to the main story), and add in Robin if it's definitely a Jason Todd-esque story going on.

Mr. Casey, I gave you rep. In case you don't see it, for that spoiler, I'll ask openly ... marry me. LOL.

That second picture is going to give me nightmares, I can't fucking wait for Tuesday now. I'm actually skipping wrestling training to play this motherfucker. LOL.

Also just completed Arkham Asylum, and loved it almost as much as the first time around. I could have done without the Ivy boss battle, and the Joker's final form - but other than that it's hard to find fault.

Is there anything about this game that you're looking forward to experiencing for the first time when you actually play it Bill?

I haven't read any of the info/spoilers in this thread (including that one there), because I know this is a day one purchase for me regardless (based on Arkham Asylum). And whilst I do get the idea of wanting to know info about the game, it seems like you know it better than the developers at the moment. Does that not take the experience away from you a bit?

    Spoiler Alert:
Stories Are Not Spoiled by 'Spoilers'

    August 10, 2011

    Inga Kiderra

Many of us go to extraordinary lengths to avoid learning the endings of stories we have yet to read or see – plugging our ears, for example, and loudly repeating “la-la-la-la,” when discussion threatens to reveal the outcome. Of book and movie critics, we demand they not give away any plot twists or, at least, oblige with a clearly labeled “spoiler alert.” We get angry with friends who slip up and spill a fictional secret.

But we’re wrong and wasting our time, suggests a new experimental study from the University of California, San Diego. People who flip to the last page of a book before starting it have the better intuition. Spoilers don’t spoil stories. Contrary to popular wisdom, they actually seem to enhance enjoyment.

Even ironic-twist and mystery stories – which you’d be forgiven for assuming absolutely depend on suspense or surprise for success – aren’t spoiled by spoilers, according to a study by Nicholas Christenfeld and Jonathan Leavitt of UC San Diego’s psychology department, to be published in a forthcoming issue of the journal Psychological Science.

Christenfeld and Leavitt ran three experiments with a total of 12 short stories. Three types of stories were studied: ironic-twist, mystery and literary. Each story – classics by the likes of John Updike, Roald Dahl, Anton Chekhov, Agatha Christie and Raymond Carver – was presented as-is (without a spoiler), with a prefatory spoiler paragraph or with that same paragraph incorporated into the story as though it were a part of it. Each version of each story was read by at least 30 subjects. Data from subjects who had read the stories previously were excluded.

Subjects significantly preferred the spoiled versions of ironic-twist stories, where, for example, it was revealed before reading that a condemned man’s daring escape is all a fantasy before the noose snaps tight around his neck.

The same held true for mysteries. Knowing ahead of time that Poirot will discover that the apparent target of attempted murder is, in fact, the perpetrator not only didn’t hurt enjoyment of the story but actually improved it.

Subjects liked the literary, evocative stories least overall, but still preferred the spoiled versions over the unspoiled ones.

Why? The answers go beyond the scope of the study, but one possibility is perhaps the simplest one: that plot is overrated.

“Plots are just excuses for great writing. What the plot is is (almost) irrelevant. The pleasure is in the writing,” said Christenfeld, a UC San Diego professor of social psychology.

“Monet’s paintings aren’t really about water lilies,” he said.

It’s also possible that it’s “easier” to read a spoiled story. Other psychological studies have shown that people have an aesthetic preference for objects that are perceptually easy to process.

“So it could be,” said Leavitt, a psychology doctoral student at UC San Diego, “that once you know how it turns out, it’s cognitively easier – you’re more comfortable processing the information – and can focus on a deeper understanding of the story.”

But the researchers are careful to note that they do not have a new recipe for writers to follow. After all, spoilers helped only when presented in advance, outside of the piece. When the researchers inserted a spoiler directly into a story, it didn’t go over quite as well.

The overall findings are consistent with the experience most of us have had: A favorite tale can be re-read multiple times with undiminished pleasure. A beloved movie can be watched again and again.

“Stories are a universal element of human culture, the backbone of the billion-dollar entertainment industry, and the medium through which religion and societal values are transmitted,” the researchers write. In other words, narratives are incredibly important. But their success doesn’t seem to hinge on simple suspense.

Christenfeld and Leavitt conclude the paper by saying that perhaps some of our “other intuitions about suspense may be similarly wrong.”

“Perhaps,” they write, “birthday presents are better when wrapped in cellophane, and engagement rings are better when not concealed in chocolate mousse.”

We might be also well-advised to reconsider surprise parties, Christenfeld said. Meanwhile, he and Leavitt continue to investigate what makes stories work – or not. Numerous recent scandals about fictionalized memoirs have inspired them to explore why it matters that a story be true. “Why does it matter,” Christenfeld said, “whether something happened to one person in five billion or to no one? If the story is still a good story, why do we care?”

Isn't that what you re-play a game for though? To pick up on things that you missed the first time round due to concentrating on other areas or not being privy to future information, essentially giving you two enjoyable experiences?

I've entered this game knowing VERY little about it, and I'm attempting to do the same with Uncharted 3. So far so good in regards to Uncharted... I just need to make it 2 more weeks.

I've put about 2 hours into this game so far and it's everything I had hoped it would be. It's gonna be a sweet ride.

The thing is though, Bill, that article is bollocks.

Obviously you can still enjoy something having read spoilers but playing games, or watching films or event seeing a wrestling show is never as good the second time around because you know what is going to happen. You can still enjoy the experience and take in the story but the first time is always the best because you don't know what is about to happen. Spoilers take that away and no nonsense article is going to change that fact.
