Have you been watching the series?

    Shall we read them together?

I basically avoided this thread until I was caught up but yeah, this is easily the best show on at the moment.

Why have you not been commenting then?

The people that I know who have read the book and saw the series have said that the series is incredibly good, but the book is so much better. So I reckon we should start with book one. At least it'll make all the names and that easier from the start.

Yeah, Book 1 it is then. I haven't been commenting because I was a few episodes behind until last week. I intended to avoid this thread all together until after the finale.

Can we get a Game of Thrones Game of Death going where we throw money into the pool betting whether Martin fucks off and dies before the next two books get written?

EDIT: Wrong thread I guess? Seems like it fits here, too.

oh he dies alright. it seems he has somehow actually written the next book and its at the publishers but he surely dies before he finishes the next one.

also for all those just starting to read the books. basically if he starts to describe food or what people look like you can skip a few paragraphs and stay in the story. the way he writes sex is just utterly embarrassing and eye rolling as well. lots of his manhood glistened.

    besides that its all good.

WOW, they actually killed Ned. Huge shock moment for me, still easily the best show right now.

I'm going to start on the books after Monday.

Did they show her putting the eggs into the bier? Otherwise that seems a bit odd.

Be it the books or the show one thing you can say for Tywin Lannister is that he has presence.

He's a bit different to how I imagined him but he is fantastic in the show still.

    I'd always imagined him as:

Because of that sterness and icy stare.

That scene with Jof and Sansa made Sansa come across a million times better. A visual medium really added to her steely resolve to defy him. Excellent scene.

    EDIT

Actually you have to give it to Jack Gleeson. He is probably playing one of the more difficult roles in the book and he has managed to play Joffrey a complete psychopath without coming across as a cartoon character. Yes, the quality writing helps but it would have been easy to ham it up. I think if anyone nails their character as I imagined it would be him.

The Dog is a lot softer I've noticed too. I think he's a victim of the lack of screen time.

Brilliant ending. It certainly didn't feel like a Season Finale to me though.

Did Book I just end the same way then without resolving any of the major storylines?

Yes. In a lot of ways Book 1 is more of a Prelude for book 2. You could almost say that with most of the books in the series though. Martin does a good job tieing up the minor storylines going on in each book while ending the book with the next books issues taking precedence.

I think that's why he does such brilliant cliff hangers. There's two main types. There's the type that coerces a viewer/reader to continue due to a nagging need to know an answer. A good example is the "Who Shot Mr. Burns" cliff hanger with the Simpsons. Its those type that leave the person wanting a very specific "What is next". Then you have the anticipation cliff hangers. Those endings where you konw its really just the beginning of something much larger. A similar potential one is the midseason finale for South Park this year.

If you do too much of the first type of Cliffhanger fans become very annoyed, but the second one rarely gets old and its what Martin does so well.

The minor plot lines for this year/book are resolved. The whole "Eddard Stark, Hand of the King" storyline ended with his head chopped off. The "Entrance into Adulthood" storyline for Dany ended with most of the things defining dominion over adolescence (Viserys, Drogo, etc) being gone and it now being her as a Woman all alone at the top. The "John Snow decides between his old Family or New" storyline resolved with him returning back to The Wall after his midnight ride. Even Tyrion, to a point, seems to have found an end to "Carousing Sight Seeing Dwarf" upon his Father's declaration of him becoming the Hand. Sansa's fairytale storyline ended with the declaration of "Bring me his head". Arya's storyline of living the tomboy life has ended, with it no longer being games as she's thrust into reality. Robb's coming of age and power storyline went from being heir to one realm to being King in the North. Robert's reign is ended and Cersei's installed her son on the throne.

I think Book 1/Season 1 finishes a lot of storylines that are established and begin early in that Book/Season. However, what Martin does well and what D&D did well in the reimaging of it, is laying the seeds for the 2nd book/seasons storylines.

    - Dany is her own woman now and has literally awoken the dragon, where does she go from there?
    - Cersei has got Joffrey onto the throne, but has learned he may not be easy to control. How does she reassert control?
    - How does Sansa deal with her horrible reality now that the fairytale has ended?
    - What do the Night's Watch encounter as they range beyond the Wall?
    - What occurs during Arya's trip north as a boy?
    - How does Tyrion transition into Hand? Can he control Joffrey? How does that sit with Cercei?
    - What's Robb's next move now that he is King of the North?
    - Whose this lobster man Stannis and what's he going to do as the "rightful" King?

And that's just a handful of the significant storylines that were not present at the early parts of Season 1 that are now set up to be the focal point of season 2.

Now, more to your point perhaps, there are two major "plots" not resolved in Book/Season 1....The Others Invading and Dany invading. In regards to those, not what I consider a major spoiler but I'll put in the box either way....

I was glad to see two things return in this final episode.

    1) The other Stark boy. I had almost concluded I had imagined the existence of the kid. Of course now that they've reminded us of him he seems kinda ominous.

    2) The bastard son of Robert who was a blacksmith.

All and all, it's going to be a long wait until next year.

Away to start the books since I would like to see Season 2 with the knowledge of the books.

Loved this first season although this last episode was a bit slow for a finale. But it does set up another season quite nicely.

Book people, how much would you say was missed from the first book, and was there any story lines that weren't developed or hinted at that you think should have been?

There was less wolves, less battles, and the scale was smaller... and a bit of info about Ned's sister was missing too.

They added a few bits to the series that really worked though.

If Game of Thrones was a meal, the Television series gave you the meat and potatoes.

The Book is going to give you the salad, the desert, and the beer to go with it.

The major storylines are all present. However, they all go a bit more indepth in some fashion. Especially historical storylines. And that's really the key of it. Martin's books are great in my eyes due to two reasons, the Character and the World. You get a LOT of the Character in the series, but not a lot of the world. You didn't get a lot of the romanticism of the ages past. You lost some of the history with regards to why the war happened, who the kingsguard were, etc.

If anything, reading the book is going to give you a heck of a lot more insight into the show and allow you to rewatch it seeing some things in a different light.

I have to see it on DVD, but I caught the first two episodes. I am a little disappointed to hear Jamie's capture was quick. I figured that would be a good part of the book to expand on. The only thing I can say about those getting ready for season 2, get ready for some treading water. Book 3 is by far the most action packed as well as filled with "Holy Shit" moments. I hope that is vague enough, I don't need a spoiler tag.

I wouldn't recommend this. I read the first book and most of the second before the series started. I'm talking several years ago. I pretty much still remembered everything. Sucks knowing what is going to happen. Took all the fun out of it and made me wish I hadn't read them at all.

I'd say the best way to go about it is to watch a certain season, then start on the particular book it covered. The books are more encompassing, so there will be plenty of enjoyment in reading the books after you watch the show. It fills in some of the gaps and actually gives you way more story.

I would definitely read Game of Thrones though now that the first season is complete. I'm gonna wait till the next season is over to finish Clash of Kings.

I would say it works both ways, though.

I started reading the books four or five episodes into the series, and when I finished the first book there were still a few remaining episodes. I will admit that knowing what was going to happen, and even knowing what was going to happen further along in season two or three of the series took something away from the show.

On the other hand, I didn't want to wait around to know what was going to happen, so there was really no way I could go without reading the books.

In Not having read the novels I can still get a pretty rough guess in where the dragons are going. Just before watching the finale I said "this season is going to end with those eggs hatching". It was a pretty safe bet they'd hatch when they did, or at least start to crack.

Being dragons the safe bet on what they're going to do is that they're going to be raised by Dany and eventually used to lead the onslaught against the current king like in Avatar. They're pretty perfectly set for that with Dany being across an ocean and having already said they're going to strike back.

Though I do wonder if we'll get the 3 main sides all waging war at the same time against each other as that does put the Lanisters in a tough spot being pinched between two armies.

    Regarding the show...

Thought the King In The North bit, since it was in the previews, was going to fall flat, but it was really great. I only wish that it had been placed later on in the show, the scene before the one with Dany and the dragons.

Would have been great to have that happen and go, "Oh, shit! Robb's king now! What a swerve!" and then go into, "WTF, she's walking into the fire, "OH SHIT, DOUBLE SWERVE!!!"

The bit with the Watch going off beyond the wall I think was the first cliched "epic fantasy voice over as we march off to war" thing, but I think it worked PERFECTLY. I thought the Jon riding off bit was going to be rushed, and it kinda was, but listening to Mormont as they're grabbing their gear and mounting up and Jon holding back and him saying, "Are you a man of the Night's Watch, or just a bastard boy?" got my blood going.

Brilliant stuff. Can't wait til next season, especially since the budget's been raised.

Ratings for the finale almost reached Boardwalk Empire's finale ratings (3 million vs 3.2), which is great since ratings climbed every single week and it's just a "faggy fantasy story for boys who want to fuck elves in the forest," as my girlfriend went into it saying. Now she wants to fuck Danerys almost as badly as I do.

Buy those DVDs, boys, and hopefully they include scenes that had to be cut.

I'd say the best way would be to read all the books now and then watch the TV series. And re-read them all in the mean time.

I know I probably sound a bit snobby... but to reccomend to watch the TV series first then read the book as comparison seems absolute arse-backwards madness to me.

I would definitely read Game of Thrones though now that the first season is complete. I'm gonna wait till the next season is over to finish Clash of Kings.
I've got to admit, I've recently changed my attitude regarding this. I now believe that its best to watch the film/tv series first, because if you enjoy it, you're almost certainly going to enjoy the books even more as you find out more information. Whereas the other way round the TV show/films often disappoint as you are expecting them to be more like the books. Watching the show/film first is kind of win win. I've never seen a film that I didnt like then read the book and loved it, just doesnt happen that often. I've read plenty of books where I didnt like the film though.

However, I simply cant be sitting waiting for 7 years with GoT, I want to read all of the books this second. So I'm going to break my own judgement on this one. Besides, yes you miss finding things out as they happen in the film and the enjoyment of that...but you do get it in the book and I think thats better.

I just want to know what happens. I want to know EVERYTHING.

I am done with the books and I think you will be ok with it either way. To me, its fun to actually see some of the scenes that were described in the book. If you read the books, you will get more knowledge of certain things. We should be grateful for the show, because I don't think book 5 would have ever come out. I also think Book 5 will wrap a lot stuff up, so if the show ends, it could end there.

I'm willing to bet a lot of money that isn't the case.

He's planning on 7 books. All of them so far have ended with big hooks for the next.

I expect book 7 to be the clean up book where we get more courtly intrigue and the aftermath of the final battle. I think the ramifications will be so big, they will encompass parts of book 6. Also, GRR is not a young man either, so we may get book 5 by him then 6 and 7 by someone else which never really turns out well.

[spoiler]Pretty big fucking bit, I think, if you think about it. Couple hundred pages into Storm of Swords, met Mance Rayder and he said she saw Jon when he saw Robert's face ride into Winterfell as he was playing music in the hall undercover.

Now I know about the Rhaegar + Lyanna conspiracy theorists, and it makes sense, but Jon's never given descriptions that describe him as having Targaryen blood (blonde hair, faggy, etc). If anything, I think the fact that Mance tells him he saw him in Robert's face, and that the Baratheons always had kids with dark hair, that he's easily Robert's son through his true love, Ned's sister, which is why he took him on as a bastard and was resented by his wife for it, even though it's really just the his sister's and best friend's son.

But then why hide him? Because Robert had to marry Cersei. Can't have a bastard running around. His other bastard got sent to a smithy and then off to the Wall.

We are discussing Jons parentage over at the book thread. However let me destroy your theory a bit Judas. Rhaenys looked like a Martell so the Targ "look" isn't dominate

    from the fat paedophile himself
    http://www.westeros.org/Citadel/SSM/..._of_Questions/

Do you have any idea what Rhaenys and Aegon looked like? (Hair color, eye color, etc.)

Rhaenys looked more like a Martell, Aegon more a Targaryen.

I'd never normally recommend it, but it's the best show to come out in years, imo. This season I was pretty much watching and waiting for certain things to happen. I would look over at my friends and see them enjoying the show on another level than I was.

I think the age thing is out the window for the TV show. She is a cutey plus make-up does wonders if they do age her. Cameron Diaz actually looks hot in Bad Teacher.

It's more to do with the fact she's nearly 30 now, and if this show runs and runs she's going to start looking a bit ridiculous pretending to be 22 or whatever she is.

If it was only for a year or two she could get away with it.

She's 16 at the end of Feast For Crows isn't she? When we first meet her I think she's 2 or 3 years younger.

Either way, that's pretty fucking young to be played by a 30 year old.

Only 20 pages? I read 20 twenty pages as I take a shit and then read another 20 as I sit there because I don't want to stop as the shit cakes around my asshole.

    Desitin's a magic balm.

    ***PROPOSAL ALERT! PROPOSAL ALERT!***

I think we should all get name changes and put Ser in front of them.

    Ser Judas Iscariot
    Ser Pete Cash
    Ser Mik
    Ser Goldberg's Best Friend
    Ser Alf

It'd be brilliant and horribly awful at the same time.

Started reading GBF, about 50 pages in so far. The chapters are a lot longer than I've been used to from the Dark Tower chapters. I only ever like to finish on a chapter, so its making me be rather cautious.

I didn't really think 8-12 pages was all that long for a chapter. I do quite like how the chapters are formatted though, with it switching from character to character as Miotch mentioned. I'm about 200 pages in. Probably getting anywhere from 2-4 chapters in a day.

    600 pages into book 3.

I think the chapters are brilliant, and the thing about them is diabolical.

You read a chapter, and at the end you go, "Fuck, what's going to happen to him?"

So you have to read more.

But the next chapter is someone else, and you go, "Fuck, what's going to happen to her?"

And every chapter makes you want to find out what's going on with that character, but leads you into another character, and so on and so forth.

I find myself reading well past by beauty sleep time because I want to find out what's going to happen to a character, and every chapter leaves me wanting to learn about the other characters, and it's a vicious, vicious cycle.

    Ha, he does.

And judging by the shit-eating smirk on Theon's face, they picked the absolute perfect person to play him.

By the way, fuck all these kids for being younger and vastly more successful than me.

Upto about page 200 GBF. How you getting on? I'm still enjoying it quite a lot, despite having seen the first season. They really have done a good job of the show.

They did do a fantastic job of the show, with what I think is one glaring error. Don't read:

I'm well behind. Need to find more time. I have read it over the span of 3 or 4 shits and am maybe 80 pages in.

Also, just noticed that the guy who plays Ser Jorah Mormont does the voiceover for the Blackberry advert just before Game of Thrones starts on Sky Atlantic. Love it.
