Anyway, in non-spastic-related news, the fixture list has been released. Newcastle away...went pretty well last time out

Aye, that game still pisses me off.

Not that there's been any real let up in relation to football, but I actually can't wait for the season to start back up again.

Maybe not as tough as under Pulis but Arsenal still have a terrible record there overall.

I'd like to thank Southampton for taking the unwanted title of most ridiculous sacking of a manager.

    Absolutely insane.

Given their recent history with managers ditching them, they probably just wanted to get in first this time.

Hopefully the next one's a dud.

I'd tend to trust Southampton's board given their recent record of hiring managers. Remember how mental it seemed when they fucked off the popular and successful Nigel Adkins to get that unknown Argentina in.

It's not that surprising or ridiculous. He was failing to get the most out of their players and the football he played was horrible. They may have finished 8th but there was a 6 point gap between 8th and 17th and 15 points away from 7th. Southampton are a very well run club who know what they are doing - Puel didn't fit the club and didn't look like he was going to achieve their ambitions so the sensible decision is to correct this. Simon's point about Poch is spot on.

8th and was incredibly close to winning a trophy. If that's not enough for a club like Southampton, what is? It's not a big drop off, it's consistent with previous years and a cup final.

We'll see. If they pull another rabbit out of a hat, fair do. But this seems ill advised.

They must have someone else lined up who they rate higher to have done this.

    Does seem harsh though.

Lindelof signed for United, good signing Rune edge?

They were going to get rid of Koeman as well because he didn't want to use any of their youth players as well weren't they? There's probably something to be said that the hires aren't that good in the first place if they're binning them off for not matching their philosophy after such a short time.

The fans were pretty vocal on the last day of the season about how much they wanted him gone and didn’t like his style of play. There’s also signs of unrest from players such as Jay Rodriguez’s brother’s tweet this morning calling Puel a ‘goat’

Sven-Goran Eriksson just found out he'd been sacked by his club in China when the club published a poem welcoming back a former manager as his replacement

Eleven years ago, you led Shenzhen football and never let us down.

Nine years ago, you took over responsibilities and saved Shenzhen football.

Memories of fighting together have never gone away, and now we recall the legend.

For Shenzhen, we are reunited, starting a new trip together.

    Coach Wang, welcome home.

The BBC are reporting that Ronaldo wants to leave Madrid now over this tax business.

If he does, Paris? Can't see him ever returning to England.

Can't see him being the type to go to the States just yet - PSG might be them place, he'd love to be the guy that broke them through into the real top tier of teams. Otherwise United maybe? He'll stay at Madrid though, most likely. His agents start talking about a move every time he wants a new deal.

Aye, that was a really tough read. They just don't have enough support, these football players. When you have an addictive personality and are earning £100,000 a week or whatever it is he's on, it's a recipe for disaster.

I really hope he can get over this, as much as you can, and get back playing football again.

Well it seems like he's over the external issues that were heightening his problems (gambling, booze, the fact he had to keep it quiet), he's acknowledged the issue and looks to be free of the injury problems that were making it worse so you would hope the future would be better. No reason he can't get back to his besr, he's only young and seems to still be in reasonable nick. According to his account he's had these problems for the entirety of his fairly successful career so far, so there's no reason to think it would end his career, the hope would be that he can reach the level he seemed capable of - at Tottenham as a kid he was really seen as a nailed-on future first teamed and possible captain, it's only now that we are seeing why that never happened.

He must have an amazing agent to have kept all those arrests, piss ups and casino visits out of the media - I never heard any of this with regard to him even when he was still at Spurs, when stories about players being on the piss were fairly common.

Cazorla set to miss most of next season injured apparently. How does this keep happening. I swear in twenty years time there will be an expose and it will turn out one of the Arsenal doctors is a low-level Harold Shipman, constantly re-injuring the players under his control to satisfy his mad urges.

The actual number of injuries has reduced since Shad Forsythe was appointed, but there does seem to be at least two players with long term injuries at any one time.

Sorry mate I thought he was good. That season where he was putting quality performances in especially against the top teams before he got his serious knee injury fucked him up.

Anyway Jon Flanagan is now our longest serving player, just let that sink in.

If it makes you feel any better, Chelsea's longest-serving player is Matej Delac, signed in 2010. Zero appearances, ten loans.

If it makes you feel any better you're getting 8.5m for a player you got from Spurs youth academy a few years ago.

Add it to Brad Smith and Ibe and that's like 30m in the past year on youth prospects

A few youngsters included in the first team squad for our tour of the States.

    Brandon Austin, Alfie Whiteman (goalkeepers)
Jaden Brown, Jon Dinzeyi, Kyle Walker-Peters, Cameron Carter-Vickers (defenders)
Tashan Oakley-Boothe, Anthony Georgiou, Will Miller, Josh Onomah (midfielders)

Aside from KWP, CCV and Onomah who are well-known, Oakley-Boothe is very highly rated by everyone who sees him, Brown has supposedly developed way quicker than expected and both of the keepers are apparently good too. No Marcus Edwards because he's playing with the U19s, but I'm surprised that there's no Kazaiah Sterling or Shayon Harrison, only two proper strikers on the tour.

I don't see that we need Barkley...

And yeah, a signing or 2 would be nice... But we only sold Walker a few days ago, so I expect some movement in... Barkley probably.

I wouldn't take it as meaning that we don't want to buy anyone, it's just Levy penny-pinching as usual. I personally think we need another centre back if we're going to keep playing three at the back, a quick attacking mid and another striker (or alternatively a striker who can cover the attacking mid position, as Son does the other way around). Possibly a right back as well, but I'd be willing to give KWP a chance from what I've seen of him, as he looks potentially very very good, and Trippier has earned the right to show what he can do as a regular starter.

Re. Barkley, I don't particularly rate him as I think he's too thick to make the most of his talents, but if anyone can get him to reach his potential it's Poch - Walker was one of the stupidest players I've ever seen until Poch turned him into a star.

The Stewart move doesn't strike me as good business. He's been underused by Klopp who came under criticism for not being able to adapt tactics to games (i.e 1-1 with Man U) and had defensive midfielder on the bench he wouldn't use.

Someone at the club can't think it's particularly good business either because he has been given 7 years worth of contracts in the past 2 years yet made a handful of Premier League appearances.

I think Stewart was signed because he can play across the back four as well as in midfield, albeit not to a particularly high standard in any of them. None of the youth team followers at Spurs were surprised or upset that we released him, and it was a big shock that he even got signed by Liverpool let alone made it to the youth team.

I know it's dumb to connect moves when they are all part of a larger puzzle, but Hull only getting £10m for Robertson and then blowing £8m of it on Stewart seems like phenomenally bad business; Robertson looks a very good player, think he'll fit in well at Liverpool.

On what basis? He's a pretty average midfielder - not hard enough to be a Livermore type, not quick enough to be a Kante type, not smart enough to be a Carrick...he's just sort of fine, a decent squad player to have because he's willing to sit on the bench and won't let you down across a number of positions (while not being especially good in any of them) but I don't see anything about him that marks him out as someone who will end up at a top six club, for example. He's already pushing 24. Mason has a much better chance of getting a move back to the PL if he recovers from the head injury, and even then I think he will probably only be a midtable Prem player at best.

    True that. Good business.

why do BPL teams do so bad in champions league? is it b/c the english players hold back the rest of the team (aka the good players)?

    just wondering

Wouldn't that require BPL teams in the Champions League playing English players? This year Liverpool and Tottenham should have a sizable English core but Arsenal, United, City, and Chelsea (the usual 4 teams) start like 5 Englishmen between all four teams.

ESPN's 30 For 30 is having one about George Best today. I am curious how it is. 30 For 30's are usually great but it is for an American "soccer" audience, not a football audience. Makes me nervous.

EDIT: Not too bad. The first half was great. Tons of old footage of Best at top form with United. But then Best's life story gets in the way. Not a very happy second half.

That was the second half of his life unfortunately.

The 30 for 30 shows are almost always great.

Yeah. Even though we all knew the ending, it was still sad to see. That last photo of him in the hospital bed looked way too much like my dad in the hospital before he died. That was tough. Hadn't seen that picture again since my dad died last year.

I saw another one of those 'highlight' videos of a young player for the young Barca guy playing against United last night. It's every single touch of the ball he had with some shit music. How is that 'highlights'? They did the same thing with Phillip Foden against United. It's weird. It's like when you see a youtube highlight reel of someone your club is meant to be signing and they 'nearly score' 4 times and you think...FUCK.

    https://twitter.com/Sxmpxr/status/890397718186790912 was the video btw

The clips I saw of Foden did seem like he had a good game to be fair. But yeah those non-highlights seem to be a complete waste of time, they don't show you the best moments to get an idea of a player at his best, nor do they provide any context for the individual touches if you were looking for a more detailed knowledge of the player.

Jermaine Pennant has apparently signed for Billericay Town

    http://www.express.co.uk/sport/footb...enal-Liverpool

BTFC's signing are ridiculous. The wage bill is now over £30k per week in the Ryman Isthmian League (7th Tier).

I can't wait to see it hopefully all crash and burn. Signing players for the sake of it - purely for the column inches.

    Look at this fucking god awful mural they made too;
