PC games, also known as computer games, are video games played on a general-purpose personal computer rather than a dedicated video game console or arcade machine. Their defining characteristics include a lack of any centralized controlling authority and greater capacity in input, processing, and output.
PC games reached widespread popularity following the video game crash of 1983, particularly in Europe, leading to the era of the "bedroom coder". From the mid-90s onward they lost mass-market traction to console games before enjoying a resurgence in the mid-2000s through digital distribution.[1][2]
The uncoordinated nature of the PC game market and its lack of physical media make precisely assessing its size difficult.

Just a PSA, if you're at all a fan of the movie or book, you should definitely check it out. Fantastic adventure game that captures the spirit of the universe perfectly. Also, unlike most adventure games, your actions actually matter and there's a whack of different endings.
Unfortunately, I don't know if there's an easy way to play it these days.

Online multiplayer made the game for me. I spent a lot of hours playing it with internet friends on a bunch of custom levels. Laser trip mines were so useful.
I also remember having to edit songs in wavepad and overwriting the original music in order to have custom songs in the game.

I loved Blade Runner too, but it didn't make the cut.
I spent more time making levels for Duke Nukem 3D than I did playing it. The Build tools on the disc were pretty awesome and I spent ages coming up with different ways to try and get the levels I wanted with weird angles and sprites.

Duke Nukem I just remember being told I couldn't play it, so I did and as a kid woo strippers. But outside of that didn't really get into it.
Never got into any of the Sims games either. Interesting that someone gave Spore love. I have never been so hyped up for a game like I was with Spore. Even got the collectors edition. Then I was let down oh so very much by it.

With Duke, I only ever had the demo but played it like crazy. So much fun. Like Pablo, I heard how inappropriate it was and had to play it. Finding the demo seemed a proper move back then.

I didn't put Sims 2 in my list because I put the first one in. The second one was a great game. I remember being amazed that is used 3 cd-roms to install the fucking thing.
In that moment I just remember I forgot DUNE2 and it's millions of floppy disks.

Dune 2 probably should've made my list. It defined the entire RTS genre, and on top of that was probably still the best of its kind until Starcraft. Not to mention that my friends and I were completely obsessed with it for a summer as a kid. To this day, we still say "HARKONNEN HARVESTER, DEPLOYED!"
It actually sparked me to explore the Dune universe, too. Unfortunately, it was pretty shit so I just stuck to the game.

Same for me with Spore. Hyped up to be the game to end all games and it was just a massive pile of shit. Pre-ordered the CE, still have it but so so disappointing.

I was the same with Spore, it looked like the be all, end all game and seemed like it was tailor made to appeal to every geeky interest in my life. Then I heard about the crappy DRM and my interest cooled enough that I didn't rush out to get it, and soon after launch I discovered it was pretty much a sandbox with some very basic gimmicks strung together in a line.
I love The Sims series in general, though 3 bugs me with the ridiculous number of micro-transactions and who knows how horrendous 4 will wind up being for that. 2 seemed to hit just the right balance of a good looking game world, plenty of features and incredible customization options. I built a Tudor palace at one point, and got rich using a downloaded WWE career. Sure, the game's basically an animated dollhouse, but it's pretty addictive and creative and a wonderful change of pace from your average gaming experience.

I apparently got some Sims 3 add on for free last week because I had it on Origin. Weird thing is, I had it on Steam... but because EA and Steam had a fall out (or something), it showed up in my Origin list anyway... and I now have that DLC on Steam as well. :dunno:

I spent an unhealthy amount of time on the Sims 2. I used to have ten or more households going and I loved the fact that you could switch between them and they were how you left them. In one game I got about three generations in and started posting on the Sims messageboards.

Oh that's just the DLC packs and expansions, the micro-transactions are all the little individual bits and pieces you can buy (with SimPoints) as well. Things like clothes, cookers, tables, and other random shit. That must run into the hundreds.

Pleasantly surprised. This was the C&C game to make my list but I thought it'd miss out in favour of the main series of Red Alert series. This for me was the most fun of all the different versions and the least complex. Now I know that's not always what people want in a strategy game but for me it made it more accessible.

Torchlight 2 was my vote. I was aware no one else would vote for it but I had to do what I thought was right.
I originally had KOTOR higher and, really, I think that's a much better game. I had Rick change this to number one for a simple reason: it was an unfinished mess. This would normally be a bad thing, as Lucas wanted it rushed out for Christmas despite Obsidian insisting the game was unfinished and not properly tested (with what went to retail.) Obsidian left a giant amount of data in the game for the unfinished portions, as they wanted to go back and do some sort of patch to finish it. This was well before DLC being commonplace and Lucas Arts decided it wasn't worth funding them finishing their game.
This all led to MASSIVE modding of the game. The most wellknown is the proper KOTOR II Restoration Mod, which restored what was unfinished in the game and properly finished it. This was a fan effort unlike many that came before. The final mod, despite adding a huge amount of gameplay, only is 60-70 megabytes. This is because it uses what Obsidian left in the game, albeit it unused. This means full voice acting and so forth that was only unused because Georgie hates his fans between not finishing this, unleashing Hayden Christensen on an unsuspecting world and not giving me my fucking KOTOR III.
Personally, I made many more mods for KOTOR I, but the sheer scope of what others did here is astounding. Also, KOTOR II actually aims amazingly high. In terms of comparison, that would be akin to The Dark Knight Rises, where it aims so highly that I have to respect it, while KOTOR is the much more mainstream parallel to The Dark Knight. I've replayed this twice in the past year and it really is striking how high it aims. Where KOTOR is a populated world/galaxy, KOTOR II is presented as the graveyard of that world with a story (involving being cut off from and potentially killing The Force) that's very original.

Hahaha, yeah the mod maps were ace.
I remember there was one map that had a little unit called the terminator which shot Mammoth MK II ammo, that destroyed everything in one hit. But the unit itself had amazing health. So the end of every battle was just four of those little guys firing on each other for about 10 minutes.

Mods are seriously the thing that makes PC gaming great. If it's just playing a game, I prefer console for the convenience and having it on a giant tv, but when it gets into modding I'll stick with the game for decades (see: KOTOR) making new stuff.
Well, mods and Steam. Steam is crazy and brilliant. Steam will murder all consoles but Nintendo.

I loved messing around with Red Alert and RA2 edits. I remember tweaking the airstrike ability so that it dropped an enormous cluster of high-yield nukes, and you could basically flatten an entire base with a click. Game-breaking, sure, but really cool to watch.

Wow, seems like that happens a lot to Obsidian - Bethesda wanted Fallout New Vegas released before Obsidian considered it ready - ending with the legion storyline being largely passed by. That decision led to a lot of fan-community modding, albeit with less new material and more gameplay/graphics tweaks.
Speaking of how great mods are, Counter-Strike was a blast, I really wish it was higher. I played it almost exclusively for a solid year or two.

I enjoyed CS briefly when it first came out but it was, in the end, the game that meant the end of fun at LAN parties for me. Same here. I enjoyed just messing around in games with friends, but CS suddenly turned everyone in to an absolute asshole and if you weren't really, really good, there was zero point in playing.

I dunno, I never considered myself all that great at CS and I had mad fun with it. Although I always stuck public servers, because I found most people were just there to have fun like I was. If anyone started being a dick, it was sort of a bonus because that shit is hilarious. If it got to be too much, I just left and found another server.
Never really did the LAN thing though, so I can't speak for that scene. If it's anything like the pro fighting game circuit, though, I fail to see how people find fun in it at all.

It was just joyless. I remember one LAN party, maybe the second or third time that CS had taken over everything else and everyone was SUPER SERIOUS, my friends and I (demonstrating our obviously superior maturity) made a mock clan to join in the tournament. We called it A$$ and we all had stupid names... [A$$] M@$T3R 3000, [A$$] Bl@ster and [A$$] B@nd!7 et al. Complete stupidity... then spent the games just trying to drag them out and annoy the opposition. One game that had some bit inside a house, I remember hiding my guy in a kitchen or a cupboard somewhere and after everyone else on the team was dead, we went and physically sat behind the people were were playing to cheer them on. They didn't even know it was us they were playing against, didn't find the humour in when we told them where they could find the last player and got annoyed that we weren't taking it seriously.
I hope they enjoyed sharing that Voodoo 3 graphics card amongst the 5 of them. Joyless wankers.

Going back to kotor 2 for a moment, I'd been replaying on the xbox recently. Last night I put in a bunch of mods and the restoration project to start on the computer. Holy God, what a difference. Between skins, some remodels and the better quality of the PC version to begin with, it's like an entirely different game. It does look too dated at all.
Much like Rick's other polls, I suspect this will lead to me replaying a lot of games. My massive mod of the first kotor is obviously next after this. Then I'm thinking Dark Forces, which I think I forgot to include on my list.

EA bought it and forced the release of a buggy, badly written mess to cap off the series, and then buried it. There was a kickstarter recently to get a new one made, I think it did quite well so something's in development, though I think it's going to be a 'spiritual successor' to avoid EA's lawyers.

I look at Ultima as the Wolfenstein3D to Baldur's Gate/Elder Scrolls/Dragon Age's Doom/Half-Life/Call of Duty. It was awesome in its time but hasn't aged well, and a lot of that is due to other games taking what it did and improving on it.
Believe me, I'm as nostalgic as anyone, and I LOVED the Ultima series when I was young, but going back and playing them now is like playing TMNT on NES while punching yourself in the gut.
As for why the IP reboot has never been successful, the Ultima lore has honestly never really been all that deep, especially compared to other western RPG's. The virtue system was probably the most interesting thing going for it, but even that's been streamlined to a more playable system by Bioware.
I do think I had Ultima IV fairly high on my list, though, just because at the end of the day it's still Wolf3D and made a lot of things possible. Even JRPG's owe alot to IV.
UO was great in and of itself though, just for the PvP and player-driven economy. Could you imagine being killed and having ALL your stuff taken in WoW? Playing MMO's used to take some balls once upon a time.
February 20th, 2014, 1:09 PM

I really enjoyed Ultima Online, it is probably the only MMORPG I can say that about. It was tough but it felt like a living, breathing world, even with what is now rather rudimentary technology. The player driven economy and sense of scale made it feel like I was part of something, and it's a heck of a lot better than thousands of 'chosen ones' running around in Elder Scrolls Online, performing the exact same quests in the same space.
February 20th, 2014, 1:21 PM
Kyle_242
Yeah it's a real shame that MMO's didn't continue to develop along with that sandbox style. I don't know much about Eve, but from what I hear it's also got a very hardcore player-driven economy. I love reading about that game, people do some fascinating things when put in a fake society.
But 8 million subscribers can't be wrong, I guess.
February 20th, 2014, 1:40 PM
The_Mike
Eve is actually really good, but to make any headway you have to work at it like it's not just a fulltime job, but it's a fulltime job in Congress. You have to connect with a lot of people and build relationships to really make it. I played for a few months but just didn't have that kind of time or dedication, but I marvelled at some of the stuff people around me were getting mixed up in. Actual wars and stuff will happen, led entirely by actual people, with double-crosses and high-stakes conflicts and so on. I was once just in a fat old freighter with nothing but a mining laser on it when suddenly the entire system filled with capital ships taking over everything, and I had to flee pretty far to find safe ground to land on because I was vaguely connected with the losing faction in that exchange.

Oh yeah, I loved this game (and 2004, in fact that vote was mine I think). Much as I malign the FPS genre these days and find multiplayer to be a fun vacuum, the Unreal Tournament games were actually very enjoyable schmozzes with a good variety of options to keep games interesting. The playing field felt a lot more even and you didn't have to be a joyless asshole to get anything out of the game.

SWOS was the manager game.

Both I think. The Amiga finally died when I beat my brother at one of them and he smashed it with his fist.

Most other people will be playing it on a console.

I was the UT 2004 vote only felt like one of them deserved in and ended up with the 04 version. Should have gone with the original I suppose to give it a boost.

Same here. I miss the Amiga, it was a fantastic platform with so many classics. I imagine a poll here probably wouldn't really get off the ground, unfortunately.

I had it in my original list that I started with, trimmed down from 30 and it missed the cut. I think after the cull of game modes in UT2003, particularly Assault, a lot of my group of LAN gaming buddies soured on the UT franchise for a bit and probably didn't get into UT2004 as hard as we had UT.

Probably not. My first ever game obsession was Frontier: Elite II on the Amiga.

I don't remember most of the games I played but my "uncle" (one of those family friends that you always call uncle, not a real uncle) owned one and compared to the Amstrad PC with its amazing grayscale colours and array of beeping sounds, the Amiga was an amazing machine. I remember playing some tennis game... and that's about it, but I definitely remember everything being amazing.

That opening cutscene was the most amazing thing ever back in the day. Great music too.

My high vote for the original was mainly down to playing it across the school LAN in year 10 and year 11. I'd discovered a flaw in the school network which would allow me access to any student's personal storage area. As I'd exposed it to the deputy head rather than exploiting it we were allowed to use one of the computer rooms at lunchtime - which we then used to play cracked versions of UT and Total Annihilation. Was my first (and really only) exposure to LAN gaming, but it filled so many great lunchtimes.
But probably my first ever gaming obsession. I fell in love with this game, the gameplay, the story, the humour, even all of its flaws, the community patches years later. If there was an updated graphics mod, I would probably still play it every now and then.

I played the living fuck out of the first Fallout. Loved that game. I loved this one too although I sadly never finished it. I think I still have it on disc somewhere, along with 1 and Tactics.

I've almost certainly told this story on here at some point... but the height of my D2 playing came after a night drinking absinthe and smoking with my housemates. We decided on a 3 paladin with 3 Act II mercenaries party... 6 auras. We planned out what our aura specialisation would be, mapped out skill plans to maximum aura's and Vengeance attacks.
Until MMO days, I'd never really had that kind of level of intricate teamwork and planning go into a game of any sort.

Diablo I and II were magic. Atmospheric as hell, with crushingly addictive gameplay and a mental community to take part in online. I remember running around chasing bounties, taking the ears of players who had wronged other players, in exchange for gold and magic items. I felt like such a badass, even though I was probably 12 and just playing the game far too much. It really captured the imagination and felt like something special.
