As some of you know, I'm going to see The RZA w/Das Efx on the 19th.. Same location on the 13th, The Roots are playing w/ DJ Icey (drum n bass).. Should I go to that, the RZA (aka God) or try to swing both..
I need help..

If you've never seen The Roots live, see them. They are easily the best hip-hop performers of all time.

kris p, go see the rza.
rza and ghostface were supposed to be in providence last week but they cancelled. and yes, i was pissed.
i've seen the roots twice, they are good, definitely worth seeing but if i had to pick one i'd go with rza. they're not the best live hip hop performers ever but they do put on a great show.

I'm pretty sure most music stores will have the Black Album on Friday. Hell, I bought 2000 BC from Wal-Mart, so I guess someone as big as Jay-Z would have an album out on time.

Black Album, baybaaaaaaaaaaay:
I'm only 3 tracks in and I'm absolutely digging it. "December 4th" is kind of corny at first, his mom tells stories throughout the song, but it really does work surprisingly well.
And "What More Can I Say" is fucking great.

The Black Album is dope. Not really a bad song on the album (although The Neptunes' tracks are definetly the weakest). Production is great all around. Just Blaze and Kanye both got a couple songs on there and all their beats are nice. But my favorite song so far is "99 Problems." Its got this ill old school beat by Rick Rubin. The last song on the album, "My 1st Song" has some great verses by Jigga. If you liked The Blueprint, you will like this. Cop it.

Flow
November 15th, 2003, 8:13 PM
I'd go with The Black Album... Resurrection (apparently...well, I think) includes some older stuff as well some "same old, same old" stuff, so I wouldn't bother. And G-Unit is probably just typical G-Unit with a few Eminem appearances.
I'd have to go with Jay-Z.

Considering this is supposedly the last time we're going to here a Jay Z album, this was dissapointing imo, a couple of throw away beats and too much bravado for the finale of Jay's career, I felt he could have got deep on a few tracks to make emthat much better. It's a good album, but not the note I expected him to go out on
He should have gone out with The Blueprint, a much MUCh more fitting album to end his career with

Anyone Heard Resurrection? I have other pac cds, so is this one just a waste of money or is it bringing something new to the table? Ive heard runnin, and Realest killaz, and the one with 50 cent, are the rest just remixes of Pacs other shit?

"99 Problems" is a Run DMC beat, I believe. Which, seeing that it is Rick producing, it fits.
Anyway, I've had it for a day now ... and The Black Album is good, but not as great as I was hoping for.
"Change Clothes" is weak, as is "Justify My Thug." And there are a few songs that don't really do anything for me either way.
With that said though, the great tracks are fucking classic.
I love the fact that, except for Cedric the Entertainer being stupid, there are no guest spots. It's just Jay-Z the entire album, bar after bar.
And there are a few fantastic one-liners, as well, which is classic Jay-Z.
So, it's no Blueprint. Or even a Reasonable Doubt. But it's still damn good. Somewhere between a B and a B+, I'd say.
...hope that helps anyone curious how it sounds.
Simon

What I've heard of The Black Album is pretty good, but certainly a disappointment if Jay Z follows through with his claims and bows out after this...there isn't enough depth, and maybe it's just me, but I'd expect a last album to at least acknowledge his past and borrow styles from there...this album has a very modern style to it, which is all good I guess, but I'd have liked more nods to Reasonable Doubt in particular which was such a classic album. Keeping with the Neptunes style for his last ever album just ignores the brilliance of what he was doing before he hooked up with them. But then I'm biased against Neptunes, so take my opinions for what they're worth :D
Resurrection is nothing special IMO, certainly the worst album I've heard of his bar Nu Mixxx Classiks :yuck:, Runnin' is nice and all of his old songs work well with the ideas of the album tieing in with the film (if that makes sense?), but there are too many dull beats, too many uninteresting cameos (although, credit where credit's due, the production team have done a good job making the collaborations seem credible, particularly the 50 Cent collabo and Eminem dropping a verse alongside the Outlawz) and any true 2pac fan will already have the older songs which make up the best parts of the album. I'd guess fans would want to pick it up anyway, but you're not getting anything especially new or good for your buck.

After about 10 listens, it is still maaad nice. But there are 3 tracks that are not up to par. "Justify My Thug," "Change Clothes" and "Allure." I was glad Jay got DJ Quik on there for "Justify" but that beat is pretty weak. And goddamn The Neptunes and their corny-ass beats. Both those songs are so weak. Jay, "Excuse Me Miss" sucked, so enough with these sh*tty radio tracks. Ok, keep "Change Clothes" on their for the single, but take out the other two (Allure & Justify), add a Premo joint (pleeeeeeeeeeease) and maybe the Dre song rumored to have been added to the album after the bootlegging. Do that, and this is a classic. Its still a great album, but it could have been better.

Give it another listen if you're coming up with that opinion. Or maybe just buy it if you are going off of mp3s ...
He spends most of the album acknowledging his past and rapping about how its his last album. And depth? Seeing that there aren't a ton of songs about partyin' and there are 1.) A couple GREAT verses about getting pulled over for going "55 in a 54," 2.) "Encore," which is him and his mama doing a biography and 3.) a track with RICK RUBIN, who founded DEF JAM, which means he is borrowing styles from his past .... I'd say he does what you ask pretty nicely.

I'd say he does what you ask pretty nicely.Like I said I've only heard maybe half the tracks on the album, and they were more than likely the more commercial tracks, as I got them off Kazaa.
I have however heard Encore and didn't think it was anything special at all. I'm all for the heartfelt odes to the family, but it's been done better. I haven't heard the Rick Rubin, so I've at least got that to look forward to. P.S. I know who Rick Rubin is :blah::p
As I say, anything less than incredible was always going to make this album a disappointment, such is Jay Z's status in the game...maybe the tracks I haven't heard are all classics, but I doubt it judging by his last album, which I maintain was just bad. Jay had enough time and money to bow out like the true great he has proved himself to be, but on the evidence of what I've heard, he didn't quite manage it.

And an honest question. Why did that thread about the new Jay-Z get closed but the Peas thread and some random thread about Oasis (a band that has threads about it already) are still around?I was offline by the time the Oasis thread was posted (or I missed it...I'm pretty sure it wasn't there when I went offline), the BEP thread I kept open because they've never been discussed on here before to my knowledge, and songs like Where Is The Love? and more specifically Shut Up would appeal to a wider audience than just the hip-hop fans, so telling the poster of that thread to keep it in there would be counter-productive, IMO...maybe I'm wrong. Dunno.
Anyway, I haven't got the rest of the Jay Z album yet, but I'll likely pick it up sometime in the next couple of weeks, I'm supposed to be reviewing it for an 'Urban' (:yuck:...) website by the end of November.

Good timing for you to ask that, after a 5-6 month hiatus where battling wasn't happening on this site I go to, it started again today and I dropped a verse in the first round against some guy...it's only text, but it's still fun and is basically freestyles, you don't have time to write it all down and keep on editing...
Anyway, this is what I dropped against this guy called Veloci_T...I'm still a novice, so it probably sucks, but it mostly got a decent reception...
When I hear the name Veloci_T, I give a lazy nod/This kid's name sounds like he should be in the Blazin' Squad//
Chump you need to step back/Cos there ain't no phasin' God//
I'm the higher spirit of hip-hop, and I'm beginning your end/Will I send you up or down? Hell or Heaven forfend?//
I know you worship me, I've read the letters you send/And if they're anything to go by, you need to drop your pen//
Ice Cube said check yourself before you wreck yourself/
But boy you need to check before you WET yourself//
Cos clearly fear is nearly overtaking your soul/I can see it in your eyes, you're about to fold//
I can blaze any beat or style, gangsta or personal lover/While you sound like Will Smith's less controversial brother//
Like Dizzee, you wear your trousers ridiculous low/Cos they fell down, belt burnt by my ridiculous flow//
Like fire my verbal capacity makes me seem like a dragon/The kind of spit that can make an AA crowd jump off the wagon//
But enough about me, let's talk about you/About how you shout your name and the crowd replies 'WHO?!'//
You're not respected, you're not accepted/If you even reply to this I'd say it's not expected//
My style's eclectic, sending crowds apopleptic/My words like knives cut you open, but it's the metaphors that turn those harsh wounds septic//
23 bars dropped, that mean's I've got nine left/You've got no backbone, like the victim of a spine theft/Wu-Affiliated, you choose some weak Cappadonna, while mine's Meth//
Eight bars to go, and still my flow rolls/The heat I spit got firemen climbing down polls//
Twelve months from now I'll have a million discs sold/The only pen you'll be using will be to sign on the dole//
6 bars to go, like 6 caps in my gun/Fuck what Violator says, rap ain't run by no one//
So if I wanna say gun, gangsta, bitch or ho/I'ma do it with style and have the whole place all like THROW DEM BOWS//
So in summary, I've just laid waste with my rhyme scheme/Veloci_T another mug looking like the victim of a crime scene//
I might be going crazy, but I ain't no line fiend/I'm destroying all-comers, and I ain't even yet nineteen//
The only bit that maybe needs explaining is that the tournament is run by a guy calling himself Violator who tried to ban the use of words like gun and gangsta to ensure people would be more creative, ignoring the fact that you can use those words creatively.
I also freestyle with my friends, though not as often as I'd like...the beats I use...
2pac - Pain
Dr. Dre & Eminem - Forgot About Dre
Eminem - Lose Yourself
Eminem - Love Me (GREAT beat to freestyle over)
LL Cool J - Doin' It (just plain funny trying to battle over such a chilled beat)
M.O.P. - Ante-Up
Mobb Deep - Shook Ones Pt. II
Notorious B.I.G. - Dead Wrong
Notorious B.I.G. - Ten Crack Commandments
Snoop Dogg - Gin And Juice
Luniz - I Got 5 On It
Eminem - The Way I Am
Dre & Snoop - Nuthin But A G Thang
Eminem - Scary Movies
Notorious B.I.G. - Hypnotize
2pac - Ambitionz Az A Ridah
Nas - Hate Me Now
Dre - Still Dre
Snoop Dogg - Bitch Please

I have Ghostface's Bulletproof Wallets, which is a pretty good CD but the tracklisting is fucked up which is inexplicably such a turn off that I rarely listen to the album...there aren't any classics on the album, but pretty much every song is good to very good, bar the lead single with Carl Thomas which I forget the name of, that's not much good.
Enter The Wu is, as I'm sure you know, one of the greatest hip-hop records ever made...possibly the best produced album in history, and the performances by all the Wu members are just incredible. Obviously there are the known classics like Method Man, Wu Tang Clan Ain't Nuttin' Ta Fuck Wit', C.R.E.A.M. etc, but it's tracks like Shame On A Nigga and Tearz that are my favourites, just brilliant hip-hop.
Forever is great, but I don't think it's as good as people say...some classics but as with all double CDs, there's too much filler. Only Built For Cuban Linx and Liquid Swords took a while to grow on me, now I'd say the are in my top ten albums of all time, just incredible stuff. Tical was decent, nothing special...I loved Fast Shadow though. Tical 2000 was just weak, IMO.
The only other album I have that you didn't mention is Legend Of The Liquid Sword, which is awesome...not quite on the level of the original Liquid Swords, but still an excellent CD.

GFK feat Carl Thomas - Never Be the Same Again is fucking hot, I loved that song, the tracks produced by the Alchemist, like The Forrest are fucking brilliant tracks on Bullet Proof Wallets. GFK is the only member of the Wu who is consistantly dope with his shit. And the whole tracklisting is bullshit, how can they fuck up so bad on a major lable release, cock suckers. But you should add this and Supreme Clientele to you collection if you're a fan of Starks.
Hack, you need to get Return to the 36 Chambers by ODB, classic shit, one of the poorer efforts from the first circulation of Wu solo LP's but still a fucking crazy album.
As for Iron Flag, I can tell you're a fan, so I suggest picking it up, its not as strong as previous efforts but its got some fucking brilliant tracks, Warning is bannana's!
You also need to get Bobby Digital in Stereo too, crazy album, download Kiss of the Black Widow feat. ODB for a taste, mad track. If you like that, skip Digital Bullet and get Birth of a Prince, cant go Wrong with the RZA.
Liquid Swords is also my favourite Wu solo CD, masterpiece.

And Return to the 36 Chambers, if I can find it, will be purchased at some point.
It got discontinued a couple of years back.. You have to d/l it, burn it, or find it somewhere used..
Sad thing is, when I first found out they weren't gonna be selling it anymore I went to every music store around here and finnally found it.. My cd's were stolen less than a week later...

'I show Livin Large niggaz how to flip a Def Jam'
Read the Lables fool!
first off, every album in the first rotation of solos is a classic.
with that being said, return to the 36 chambers is one of the best albums wu has ever put out! 'return...' is the best produced album of them all. beginning to end its the rza's finest work. i can hardly listen to it all the way thru cause i get so amped listening to it and shouting the lyrics, its crazy, i'm exhausted after one listen to that cd.
don't get iron flag, it sucks. its derivitive and not worth putting the wu tang name on it. its like they were just going thru the motions. pathetic.
i do like the bobby digital stuff. bobby digital in stereo is a great cd(too bad i shattered mine, damnit!), digital bullet is lacking though, skip it. new rza was good, but too me it didn't have much staying power, but still a solid release.
and 'ironman' is the best wu solo of all time. masterpiece. perfection. 'cuban linx' and 'liquid swords' are close but don't beat ghost's first.
and hack, you asked me before for songs not from those albums and really the best songs are all from those albums, there are a few gems you might want to check out from some of the other solos like:
ugod - stay in your lane
odb - nigga please, fuck with me
inspectah deck - elevation, r.e.c. room, friction
some other wu affiliates....don't know if you've heard these dudes
la the darkman - heist of the century, element of surprise
killarmy - i can't really think of any individual songs and can't find the covers at this point, but i'll try to remember some....'5 stages of consciousness, bastard swordsman, allah sees everything', those might not be the best ones but you can see if you like 'em.
shabbaz the disciple - death be the penalty
gravediggaz - just about anything off 'six feet deep' is great. try 'trippin'
i'll also have to look thru my 'killa beez' cd's 'swarm' and 'sting', there's probably something on those of note.

While we are talking about Wu-Tang......this is from allhiphop.com:
"Wu-Tang Clan's RZA is leading the publication of a book on the history of The Wu-Tang Clan. Riverhead Books will release "The Wu-Tang Manual," which will contain autobiographies from each member as well as a lyrical encyclopedia.
"This is basically everything Wu," Riverhead senior editor Sean McDonald told Billboard. "A large chunk will be the whole mythology of the group, explaining not so much how they came up with it, but what it means to them and how everything interconnects."
The group will hit the road for a 60 city tour in the Spring of 2004, to coincide with the release of the paper back book.
The concert has been labeled the group's farewell tour, a notion Raekwon seemed to indirectly confirm in a recent interview.
"With the Clan I learned so much. The clan will always be the clan but at the same time we all got routes that we want to take in life and we kings right now," Rae told AllHipHop.com. "Every king needs his own castle. We can't all be in one castle and try to call shots. Everybody has to have his own destiny and make something positive happen for all of us."
It's a chance to look back and explain what they've been doing all along. No one has actually been able to reveal the way it is all put together in their minds, particularly in RZA's," McDonald said."

"Change Clothes" is weak. The Neptunes sound like a parody of themselves and the lyrics are some of Jay-Z's worst. Easily the worst lyrics on the album, at least.
And, boy, you sure are witty for pointing that out!

This album is fucking 5/5 the first 5/5 album this year. Every song on the album is fucking sick, except for Change Clothes. Allure is the shit its so soulful for the Neptunes. Kanye laced Jigga with heat for Encore and Lucifer. December 4th's beat sounds incredible, and the lyrics are fiyaaaaaaa. What More Can I Say is one of my faves off the album, and thumbs up to Rubin for lacing Jay with that beat.

What did you guys think of Birth of a Prince? I thought it was a solid album with some retro-RZA production (The Grunge, Fast Cars) mixed with some new shit (Grits, Cherry Range). The guest appearances by Masta Killa and a few others were strong and A Day To God Is 1000 Years is one of the best songs this year IMO. Most reviews I've read say this is one of the worst Wu albums ever, which doesn't really make sense considering Cappadonna has dropped two albums.

i am getting the new KRS-One (in other words the greatest rapper ever not named Germaine) album right now!!!
Apparently on "Hip Hop vs. Rap" he says "How many MC's must get dissed before someone says don't fuck with Kris". I think he has said that before many times and I think Black Moon said that line on one of their albums. And obviously Canibus used it on "How Many Emcee's". Anyone know who the first was to use that line? Because I am not completely positive KRS-One or Black Moon ever used the line before Bis did. Just wondering.
Anywho, once I give "Digital" a proper listen I'll come back and give you a rundown. I already know it'll be great though. KRS-One is second to none in hip hop. That is my opinion. Fuck Rakim. Ahahahahahahaha...nah, I was just going to leave it at that but I know how many of you it would piss off. Rakim is . Or at least he was.

I've done some Wu-Tang investigating lately ...
Replaced my copy of Only Built 4 Cuban Linx with a real one. Picked up Return to the 36 Chambers. Picked up Iron Flag.
The first two are fucking classics. Iron Flag is good enough ... "Soul Power" is shit, though.
I also quickly listened to Raekwon's second album, GZA's Beneath the Surface, RZA's debut and Cappadonna's The Pillage.
The first two did NOTHING for me, but I actually liked The Pillage. And RZA's debut was ok.
Why am I sharing this with you assholes? I don't know, I'm trying to make sure I've heard all of the great Wu out there and I know I'm not an expert.

I mean the Bobby Digital album ... mainstream debut as the RZA, I suppose. And I didn't really dislike it ... but it just didn't do much for me.
And it was the second time I had listened, so I'm fairly sure it won't click with me.
The Pillage was predictable and simple, but it was pretty good, too. Don't laugh at me, suckah.

Can-I-Bus by Canibu is now my unofficial favourite rap album of all time, I'm comparing it to the likes of Tupac and Redman and Eminem and it's better. Listening to it while stoned late at night is pretty awesome, I love Buckingham Palace, Niggenometry, Get Ratarded, Channel Zero, Rip Rock, Hypenitis the most, but the other tracks are equally immense, 2nd Round KO is unforgettable, the best battle rap every written.
(Y) thumbs up Canibus, creator of tehe greatest stoner album of all time excluding ATLiens by OutKast....WheelZ of Steele, ATLiens...PinDadillac Boys or whatever it's called and Babylon (Y) Cadillac

Best battle rap ever written?! Not even close...
The Bridge Is Over, Ether, The Takeover, Hit Em Up...hell, even The Sauce and Malcolm X are better diss records than Second Round KO. The best thing about that song is Mike Tyson sounding drunk as a bastard at the start.

 Now One Ball is an ill-informed verion of UMDeep, congrats!
I've been listening to the new Jay z album alot, I think if you dropped the Neptunes tracks, Moment of Clarity and maybe the Timbo joint (hot track, just seems out of place) it would be a much better album.
QuietStorm
November 24th, 2003, 7:49 PM
Hmmm, I thought Moment of Clarity was one of the best tracks on the Black Album. Eminem laced him pretty well.
One Ball, Can-I-Bus is a great and underrated album despite what anyone else says. But in my opinion "Rip the Jacker" is a better diss to LL than 2nd Round K.O was. It was funny and stole an LL beat to rip him. Doesn't get much better than that.
And Simon, all those disses you named are all great EXCEPT Hit Em Up. That has to be the most overrated diss song of all time.
As for the "new" KRS...there are a few too many guest appearances in the middle tracks but Common is on a freestyle track which sounds kinda old and Big Pun is on a track that was probably in the vault for a while and not just thrown together with a recycled Pun verse. The production lacks in a lot of the songs and was probably done by KRS himself. This album isn't as good as the REAL version of Kristyles which I am not sure was ever released in stores. But it is good nonetheless. Here are the best tracks although I haven't listened to "Remember" yet since it wouldn't work off of the rip I got...
1. Tell the Devil Ha (Oh my God...as soon as this track started my mouth went agape and I sat in disbelief, shows how deeply his religous beliefs go. The production is just about perfect.)
2. Free Mumia feat. Channel Live (political track, the other dude has more time on the track than Kris I think but he isn't bad)
3. As You Already Know feat. Truck Turner and Big Pun (you'll know the sample used and Pun and KRS kill it after the Truck Turner crap)
4. Hip Hop vs. Rap
5. Woop Woop Showbiz Remix
It is a decent album that might just be for the internet. I'm not sure. It doesn't quite sound like something he would release in stores but you never know. I think a lot of these tracks were recorded quite a while back. Is he even affiliated with Truck Turner anymore? Nevertheless, if you are just going to get one track get "Tell the Devil Ha". That song is great.

Was "Free Mumia" on KRS-One's self-titled album because that is the only KRS album I haven't heard all of. I see it on the tracklisting though and if it is the same track that is on "Digital" it confirms my thoughts that a lot of this is old stuff.

Listen to the Eminem diss to Canibus there titled "Can-I-Bitch". It is lame. The beat is lame. The lyrics are lame. The only redeeming quality is the decent chorus. I really hope this is just a half-joke to Canibus to make it look like he went soft. It was obviously recorded beforee Mic Club since some retarded Feminem fans have been quoting exact lines of it for a long while.
It is a shame it doesn't look like he is taking Bis seriously. He might want to reconsider after the Mic Club and RTJ gems.
If Bis releases whatever diss song he has recorded already he will undoubtedly smoke him.

[Intro]
{in a high falsetto voice}
Uncle Marshall!
Will you Tell us a bedtime story?
{regular voice}
Here we go...
[Verse One]
Now once upon a time not long ago
There was a little rapper about to blow
But his album came and it was not good
I think it went lead or double copper wood
So the silly little fans they were mislead
By a nerdy internet computer hip-hop head
"Me and you, 'Clef, we're gonna make some cash
Grab the silver paint and let's paint my ass"
Hey mister, would ya care to bare witness to
The ass-whippin' I'm about to administer
To this little ass-kissin' vaginal blister
'Stanabis', little marshall mathers sister
And in this corner, we have the mister
not havin' it, it's the mad sinister
Dr. Evil with his bag of tricks for
this little antagonist faggot dick-suckin'
ex-LL Cool J fan from Windsor
I'm 'bout to murder little Kenny fag Kennif-sta
You bastard I ain't wanna have to diss ya
Canabis, where the fuck you at? I miss ya!
[Chorus]
Can-i-bitch, oh Can-i-bitch
where for art thou can-I-bitch?
Please tell me what happened with
that style that you were rappin' with
Can-i-bitch, oh Can-i-bitch
are you from Los Angeles
New York or just a janitor
from Canada? Oh Can-i-bitch
Now at first I ain't really understand the shit
Picture me for a second and imagine it
Chillin' in a Bat-Mansion and relaxin'
When all a sudden some bullshit comes across the scanner
It's Can-i-bitch with some Stan Lives shit
They greet me out at first man this is sick
For me being just a sick disconflict
gets my dick harder than arithmetic
And I know how you jealous ones envy
I shoulda knew better from the first few letters you sent me
The first two letters you were tellin' me shit
like you respect me, like any other regular MC
The third letter you ask how come I ain't return
none of the messages at Shady Records You Left Me
The fourth Letter: "Slim you really startin' to upset me!"
The fifth letter told me you were comin' to get me
The sixth threat there's a bomb threat in our building
This crazy motherfucker's really tryin' to kill me!
So I went back and read the first few letters that said
Some shit about a message you left
Oh shit, that's not an "E" that's an "A"
This dude wants to leave me a "massage," he's gay!!
Right away I'm on the phone with Dr. Dre
We got a bogey! (Marshall I'm on the way)
[Chorus]
Can-i-bitch, oh Can-i-bitch
where for art thou can-a-bitch?
Please tell me what happened with
that style that you were rappin' with
Can-i-bitch, oh Can-i-bitch
are you from Los Angeles
New York or just a janitor
from Canada? Oh Can-i-bitch
So in two seconds flat Dre's at my crib
The funny thing is we both know where this kid lives
And neither one of us have Canadian citizenship
Shit oh Dre wait a mintue that's it
All we gotta do is use a bit of turbo boost
We can fly over the border "Let's go" {*WOOSH!*}
So we're off to Toronto and we're gainin' speed
{*BOOSH!*} (What was that?) oh Jermaine Dupre
Fuck It, keep goin' no time to waste
Wait backup hit him one more time in case
okay .. fuck now he's draggin' under the car
Oh well only 30 more thousand miles
Meanwhile me and Dre are tryin' to conversate
Just tryin' to find a reason for the constant hate
And tryin' to figure out what happened to 'Germaine Propaine'
"He couldn't have fell off that hard!" ain't no way
"What happened to the way you was rappin' when you was scandalous
the Canibus turned into a television evangelist"
Plus he raps with his regular voice {*BOOSH!*} {*BOOSH!*}
{*BOOSH!*} {*BOOSH!*} (what was that?) Pet Shop Boys
So we pull up to the bridge where he last was spotted
His corpse was still movin' but his ass was rotted
He kind of smelled a little like Courtney Love
I figure if I stick him with a fork he's done
So I stapped him twice, kept jabbin', Christ
He won't die this guy's like a battered wife
He's like Kim, he keeps comin' back for more
But he won't fight back I cracked his jaw
Hold up 'bis quit foldin' up!
Punch me in the chest make my shoulders touch!
DO SOMETHIN'! at least one punchline
C'mon till the meter reads 9-9-9-9!
Say 90 percent of my fans are blonde
'bis c'mon answer me man respond!!!
Tell me 'bout the sun rain moon and stars
Intergalatical metaphors from Mars!
Raw to the floor, raw like Resovoir Dogs
Bite ANOTHER line from Redman's song!
Suddenly the stub from a dead man's arm
from a midget reaches out from under the car
It's JD, this motherfucker won't die neither
Dre starts sprayin' him with cans of Ether
We stomped the bitch and then stopmed the bitch again
(Compton!) Detroit bitch talk some shit again!!
STOMP HIM! (switch feet) STOMP HIM! (switch again!)
Dre alright he's dead dog, quit kickin him!
I think Stanabis jumped off the bridge again
(Damn...) he disappeared, yo he's gone, he did it again!
[Chorus]

Has anyone here heard C-Rayz Walz "Ravipops" album? I try to not be impressed anymore by anything Def Jux releases (most of you know I am a Def Jux groupie) but this kid has serious writing and rapping skills. You might have already heard him before on Cannibal Ox's "Cold Vein" or Aesop's "Labor Days". The album is obviously underground but it has elements that every hip hop fan would love. I'd consider his flow somewhere between Pharoahe Monch and Rza and his production, despite not getting any beats from the man who brought him to Def Jux (El-P) they are all relatively good a few even great. Check this dude out if you haven't already. Even if you aren't a fan of Def Jux, C-Rayz Walz isn't as out there as some of the others on the label. I was pleasantly surprised.

Thanks to Pr0ximo, Kamilian, and RipDaJacker at CanibusWorld.com for coming up with all of this and letting me post it here. An interesting read.
To start this at the beginning of the feud I'll back up a little bit.
Before Em had blown up, Canibus visited him on the Warp Tour and took him up on his offer to collaborate so Bis asked him about being on a song called "Phuk You". Em refused because he claimed the Bis verses were indirectly & vaguely directed to him & LL Cool J, therefore no collab took place.
Flashward to the time Em's status was ascending. Em did a song called "Get You Mad" where he says something along the lines of "step 2, get a job at a label, switch demo tapes with Canibus and put yours on the table". Furthermore, on his debut album he mentions Bis in the song called "Role Model"..."I'm hazardous, you wouldn't wanna answer this unless you answer back with with a battle rap you wrote for Canibus". Now that's twice.
It quiets down for a while...to the best of my knowledge, and Bis releases 2000 B.C. and surprise, surprise the song "Phuk You" is on it & many people think one of the verses is directed to Em - the one that goes "Your superstar status doesn't mean shit to me, lyrically sucker emcees........". After all of this, between 2000 B.C. & CTHS and before The Marshall Mathers LP, Em does an interview stating Bis isn't skillful or something along those lines.
This is where things get interesting.
Both their explanations for the beef were very ambiguous and vague. Everytime Bis was asked "why the beef", he would be very evasive in his explanation. Em never even said anything about it when asked except for "he's a fag" etc..
I know it had something to do with Em not collabing with Bis on "Phuck You", then Em making cryptic references to Bis in his songs minus the Westwood freestyle with Proof.
But after hearing the "Can-a-bitch" song it makes me think that maybe there is some truth in what Em was saying when he mentioned Bis writing him letters to express how ill Em was, or maybe a letter for a collabo?
Maybe the reason why Bis took it to the heart and made "Stan Lives" and CTHS entirely mocking Em with the C4, wife & daughter, skits (rosenburg) and other various references is because when Em made "Stan" it was loosely based on a situation he had between Bis?
Why else would Bis get fueled enough to make an entire song mocking Stan, and making an entire album revolving around Eminem? It can't just be because Em mentioned Bis like 3 times in songs.
I think the first letter was an apology for the confrontation at the video shoot and an acknowledgement that Bis was feeling Em's ability. Em likely didn't reply or call and said "I guess it's cool". Bis then took no reply as a "he either didn't get the letter or doesn't feel complied to reply" and so he wrote another. Again no response so he tried calling a couple times and got no return call. So he tried one last letter that said either acknowledge it's squashed or "Phuck you!". Again no reply.
Em is confused and doesn't know what's going on so he writes a song about an infatuated crazy fan who writes him letters (remember the letters get progressively more pissed) but in fact he is writing indirectly to Bis. Bis took offense and said, all right I know that whole shit was directed at me so I'm going to do a song as "Stan" and even change my voice to mock Em. Thus in the track "Stan Lives" it is "Canibus" who is saving "Stanibus" (one of his "personalities" saving the other). It brings new light to the verse "Remember those letters I wrote, in ATLANTA (Canibus' hometown) before Up in Smoke, that's the day I was gonna cut your throat" or however the line went.
So that is why Em has the verse about the letters in this track. The one about the bomb was possibly a reference to "Poet Laureate" ("strap a bomb to one of your labels record clerks, then activate it as soon as he gets to work") so maybe this diss is more recent than some people think. So I think it is that Bis wanted to apologize for the incident at his Video shoot and wrote the letters and when he got no replies he tried calling a couple times and then simply took it as a rejected apology. Anyways, I've been thinking about the same idea since I first heard the verse on "Can-I-Bitch" and I have no way of confirming any of the above. Just a little conspiracy theory that I would not be surprised at all to be true. Peace.

Interesting theory, but I think the song 'Stan' was just Em being creative and telling a story. After SSLP came out, he was a huge star and he probably ran into a few Stans.
hbk52685
November 29th, 2003, 2:15 AM
That's quite a theory, a lil far-fetched, but anything's possible. It would make sense though, especially considering what Em says in Can-a-bitch.
In terms of the whole battle...Canibus really won nothing. Look at it, Em takes a few jabs at Canibus, but nothing majorly calling him out and what happens after? Canibus vaguely jabs back in Phuk You, hardly saying anything. Then comes Stan and a few more lines here and there about Bus. Next, Canibus makes himself look like the biggest dumbass ever by making an entire album revolving around his "beef" with Em. Em doesn't really have to do to much to counter that, if a guy gives a rapper he's beefing with that much credit and attention...he ends up looking 1 big fucking joke and I think Em recognized that and treated him as such by putting out Can-a-bitch.
It's really sad cause Canibus is a talented rapper, oh well.

Just read the review, seems pretty stupid that he bothered reviewing it as a hip-hop album when he says himself that it isn't one...also, it's pretty blind to rate it solely in hip-hop terms and give it such a crappy rating on the basis that it isn't hip-hop, when he gives no mention of what it is like as a rock album...if they're going to give an objective view of The Avalanches' album not just from a rap fan's perspective, they should show a little consistency and do the same for Kid Rock.
Also, fuck Kid Rock anyway, the RJD2 album got a great review :)

Apparently a new 18-track Canibus leak is starting to make its way around IRC containing a !6 minute! Eminem diss.
The leak as a whole is entitled Return To Canibus and contains guest appearances from The Horsemen, Chino XL, and Method Man as well as a few others.
"...and a ridiculously long 12:07 track which I assume will be Poet Laureate 3 as it has the same guy sampled as in the first two. The story telling is perfect cuz you can truly visualize each bar and not get confused with big words. He does a great job to merge the different verses together. I'm truly impressed, never have I heard an entire 12 minute song with no choruses while hanging on to every bar until the end where your left wanting more."

And to those who wanted a Raekwon review, I'll keep this brief. EVERY beat on the album is trash. Especially Ice Cream Pt. 2. It is so corny. Plus, there are like 5 skits on the album which totally screw up the flow of everything. I realize this is supposed to be some sort of concept/story album but if you need to put skits in there to help the story then you don't deserve to do a concept album.
And that is the worst part. This is supposed to be the story of some super gangster character of Raekwon's named Lex Diamond. So yeah, very intriguing. Problem is it turns out the same as almost every other gangsta rap album. Shitty. Don't buy this. Just download it.
Immobilarity was much better than this pile of junk. Mainstream'd and no Rza'd out as it was.

I'm pretty excited about a new Canibus album, I still don't have C True Hollywood Stories but I'm holding off on that by choice. I don't want to be disappointed by Canibus when he has produced quality found in things like Can-I-Bus? and Rip The Jacker. The Mic Club and 2000BC albums are great as well, but I don't think they flow together as well as the others, Mic Club is a great album with quality individual tracks but I think the track listing is confusing, maybe I'd have changed it. Either that or I haven't listened to them as much as Can-I-Bus? and RipThe Jacker - No Return is one of my favourite tracks by Canibus
QuietStorm
December 10th, 2003, 3:16 PM
Just don't get CTHS. It was a great idea gone bad. Everyone knows what he was attempting to do but he still jacked me for my 15 bucks. Instead just try to download Box Cutta Blade Runna, The Rip Off, Lemme Hear Something Else, R U Lyrically Fit (and skip past Lou Lombard's part), and get the REMIX of U Didn't Care off The Brainstream, which is much better and he usually his regular voice. Other than that, thee whole album is pretty much trash.
And take all these other bullshit rumors with a grain of salt. Here is all I know. Canibus VI is coming out in approximately 8 months. So there is a chance any Eminem diss or 12-minute track could be held out until then. Chino's camp also denies any track has been done already with Canibus but The Horsemen album should be out next summer as well. I am hoping an Eminem diss is released sometime soon but I highly doubt it because Can-I-Bitch was LEAKED and made before MiClub came out, Canibus has his Army responsibilities, and for all I know the beef is pretty much squashed. There are even RUMORS of a Slim Shady vs. Rip the Jacker track for Eminem's new album. It is nice to see a battle that is out of respect and not I want to kill you, he wants to kill me like the 50 Cent/Ja Rule fiasco. As much as I really don't like anything Eminem is doing these days a collabo with the god MC would be sick.
And that is all I have.

I picked up the Nas live in New York City DVD yesterday...similar setlist to when I saw him, brought back a lot of memories...BUT...the crowd was awful. Considering that it's Nas' home, it's the home of most of hip-hop's greats, and it was, in my mind, the BEST place to go as a lover of rap...the crowd was silent. Didn't seem to care. I was shocked. The crowd at London Astoria was a billion times better, the whole place was jumping for the entire show.
I was shocked and somewhat disappointed, I really hope that isn't the usual story, given that one of my life ambitions is to go to NYC and catch some shows...but I don't hold much hope, considering we're talking about one of the best, most famous, most popular rappers in the world, in his HOME TOWN for Christ's sake.
So anyone seen the DVD or have any opinions on the crowd issues?

I dunno, but Nas is whipped. The dude got Kelis' naked body tatooed on his arm. Titties out and all. Hopefully they stay together and he doesn't have to get that removed. Ouch.

Kool G Rap? Slick Rick?

I have never been much of a Kool G Rap fan. I respect the hell out of what he has done though. And Slick Rick was the greatest storyteller. Nas took his throne. We'll see what happens when The Ruler's album comes out next year. He obviously has had plenty of time to write being incarcerated and all.
And here is my opinion on Jehst. I can't stand Falling Down. He seems to ramble on forever, the beats aren't particularly great, and his flow never changes. BUT Return of the Drifter is freaking incredible. I love that album and it is hard to see why he couldn't continue that path to his first LP. He has great writing skills and despite being British :) he more than holds his own on the mic.

Agent Mathers: Why Mr. Williams? Why? Why? Why do you do it? Why, why grab a mic? Why keep rapping? Do you believe you're battling for something? For more than your career? Can you tell me what it is? Do you even know?
Is it skill?
Or acknowledgement? Perhaps your fans?
Could it be for respect?
Illusions Mr. Williams, vagueries of linguistic pronunciation! Temporary constructs of a verbally vicious telekenitically gifted human intellect trying desperately to justify a lyrical soliloquy that is without meaning or purpose! And all of them as artificial as Def Jam itself! Although, only a scientifically inclined mind like Einstein can invent something as insipid as "Stan lives".
You must be able to see it Mr Williams! You must know it by now! You can't win. It's pointless to keep battling.
Why Mr. Williams? Why? Why do you persist?

Could it be for love?

I just finished listening to the new Outkast double LP, it's very good. The second half of the CD "The love below" is pretty dissapointing in most areas, but the Speakerboxx alb more than makes up for it. The song "Last Call" with Lil Jon and the East Side Boys is a fantastic party tune, and there's some great rapping on most of the tracks. I'd have preferred maybe a few of tracks to be taken from the second CD and put onto the the first, and then just scrapped the rest of "The Love Below" altogether. But still worth buying.

This was posted at CC by Lou Lombard (Canibus' manager)...
Here thee, here thee..... fellow Canibusaniacs! I know we've had our problems in the past but I want you to know the man himself does not hold any grudges or "bad blood" towards this site.
Anyways back to the meat of the hunted game. We're currently negotiating a deal that will let us join forces with perhaps the most mighty hip hop label in the world today, Rocafella Records. My main man wants to make sure that he can keep some of his rights on Mic Club as well and some publishing. Basic deal negotiation. It's looking optimistic though (as it does when both sides are anxious to get a deal done, which is cleary the case).
News on the horsemen. Canibus has told me that Kool G Rap, Vinnie Paz and Chino XL will be on the album for sure. They also want to see if they can get Crooked I on a track or two. As for the distribution rights they are still up in the air. If everything works out with Rocafella then you can imagine it being released on there but it won't be until after Canibus's debut on the Roc.
Until next time, i'm ghost.

Others looked way too far into it and were crying about how black people shouldn't join the army because it goes against the whole Black Panther movement and all that. Some people, like me, wished him the best and hoped he knew what he was doing.

With that said, the dude can write. He comes hard with mad mega-syllable rhymes and doesn't miss a step. The beats are all hot (Fab even produces some songs) and there aren't any sappy love songs. Seems like he put all those out on Street Dreams and saved his harder shit for this album. If you like Fab's flow, I would definetly recommend this. Fabolous is hungry, and he has mastered his own style...take that for what its worth.
Overall: 7/10.

For Christmas I got the following albums:
"Decade, but wait it gets worse..." - Sticky Fingaz
Tupac Greatest Hits
Notorious B.I.G "Ready To Die"
Got The Black Album and all, but it's not had a proper play yet so I'll reserve judgement.
Surprisingly I'm liking Sticky Fingaz a lot more than I thought I would, it's not great lyrical sickkness but it's cool and he seems pretty decent to me
I gave Biggie a listen earlier, it's a good album and I recognise a few of the songs so that's cool - Tupac blows itout of the water pretty much. It's the Greatest Hits though so I'm not dissing Big - definately made up about the Tupac album though. My parents would only have bought me something shite

Whoopsy, I copied the shortened version. This should work. Lucky I am here. Pak-man annoys the hell out of me and I wish he would just shut up. But it is a pretty nice concert all in all. He spits a sweet freestyle at the 40 minute mark.

Just look at him. I am sure he does have a large set of nuts. And have you heard I Told You So? Sure, he doesn't often know when to flow fast or slow but lyrically he can fuck anyone up and the production on that album is stellar. Download Nunca if you have never heard it.

I'm disappointed in The Love Below, it's 99% pish, I don't think he raps a verse. A couple of tracks are good music, fun to listen to, but the rest is just a waste of Andre 3000. On the plus side, Big Boi didn't disappoint, still up to his stupidly fast and impeccable flows

Not from the point of view of a rap fan, certainly. Even from the view of someone who's into different types of music, which I would consider myself to be, Big Boi's is easily the better CD...I appreciate the style of music Andre is going for on The Love Below, I just think he does it really shittily for the most part.

'the love below' is the worst album i've ever heard in my life. and i've heard some crap but its the crappiest crap i've ever had the unpleasure to listen to. one of the most incredible rappers maybe ever puts out a subpar avant-guarde attempt at something different. thanks but no thanks. what a waste of talent. i hope outkast and andre reached a wider audience cause they lost a fan in me.
'speakerboxxx' was disappointing also. after listening to 'the love below' i didn't even want to listen to big boi's half.
down with 'speakerboxxx/love below'........give me 'aquemini', 'ATLiens', or 'southerplayalisticmuzik' anyday.

sin six: 'hey ya' is still a damn catchy song and the only one worth a damn on the cd

Well I also like "different types of music," but I don't agree with you, well, EVER. So, maybe a statement such as "even from the view of someone who's into different types of music" is dumb as hell.

Well I also like "different types of music," but I don't agree with you, well, EVER. So, maybe a statement such as "even from the view of someone who's into different types of music" is dumb as hell.I was talking about myself, not people in general who like different styles of music. I was using myself as an obvious example, but there are tons of people who are into both rap and the funk/soul genre of The Love Below, and most admit that Big Boi's CD is a lot better than Andre's.
Anyway, the album is just weak, to me...the production is good, as you'd expect from Outkast...but the lyrics are dull, and the delivery is just plain bad. Andre is one of the best rappers out right now, and when he's rapping alongside Big Boi, you're guaranteed a hot album...as shown by the fact that Outkast are one of the only long-standing rap acts who have never released a bad album...only Gang Starr can match that, in my opinion. That's part of the disappointment with The Love Below, the knowledge that if he'd have stuck to what he's good at, the album would have been simply brilliant. Where rap is concerned, there are few better, but the style he went for on The Love Below, there are many way better artists.
At the same time, he deserves credit for trying something new, but it didn't pay off.

I've been listening to the Big Boi CD for the last two days solid, it's so superior to Andre's it's not even sunk in properly - I think two songs on Andre's CD sound different but the rest is all generic love shite, compare it to the mostly enjoyable Big Boi CD and I can't see myself listening to the 2nd CD ever again.
That's not to say that if I was a bigger motown, r'n'b, soul fan I still wouldn't like it, maybe I would - I just really really don't like it for some reason. The Happy Valentines Day song is cool, I like it, Hey Ya is catchy as fuck but the rest just annoys me - it feels like I've wasted money but I'm compensated by the fact that Speakerboxx is still a fairly good album and I've bought worse - remember Truth Hurts?
I have ATLiens - that album shows what OutKast were capable of, Wheelz of Steel and the title track rules
I don't think it's feasible that since Stankonia they've lost their edge, maybe the lesson learned is that Andre should stick to what he does best - solid rapping and unique singing, but with Big Boi for together they are best.
Although I think that if they did split then Big Boi would have a better solo career, too many people have been disappointed by Andre recently.

Happy birthday to you too dude.
Speakerboxxx has no crappy songs? There are about 5 pointless skits (D-Boi, Interlude, Bowtie postlude, Bamboo, Intro) and Tomb of the Boom is WEAK (apart from Big Boi). It makes it hard to listen to an album where 6 of its 19 tracks are skippable. Still a dope ass album though.
With The Love Below, you either hate it or you love it.

Since when do skits count as songs? Since, uh, always.
The most ridiculous thing about at least 3/5 of the hip hop albums released in the last few years is the amount of skits. They're almost always stupid after the first listen, they rarely help the flow of the album and they just get on my nerves. The skits on Big Boi's disc are all shit, except maybe the kid singing, which is at least cute/funny the first time. Dre's skits, though, actually don't bother me. It is possible to have some that aren't crap. It just doesn't happen much.
Oh, and to keep on the subject of Outkast, ATLiens kicks my ass with its lack of skits. Stankonia, which is actually a better album, has a bunch of them and they're all lame.
Mr. Boombastic
January 1st, 2004, 3:18 PM
I actually like skits and think they can add a lot to the album if done correctly, but the problem is that 95% of cds with skits are just ridiculous breaks taking away from the album more than adding to its flow. The Love Below does use skits very well and sets up each song very well.
I still like Andre's album better. True its not as much of a rap album, but it is different from anything any rapper has ever released. Experimenting with new styles and expanding as an artist is something greatly missing from the music industry these days. Sure Andre could have come out with an album just like ATLiens or Stankonia and would have been pretty damn good too, but its cool he tried something new. Even if you hate his cd, you have to admit that it created a great amount of buzz in the music industry this year because right now there are millions of rap albums like speakerboxxx for every the love below.
Also, doesnt anybody else think that A Life in the Day of Benjamin Andre is the greatest song Outkast has ever made.

Do I call skits songs? No, quite obviously, I call them fucking skits.
But I don't think you get what I'm saying. They're still "songs" ... they're tracks on the album, they take up a chunk of space. You can't just shrug off the fact that skits are almost always stupid by saying "they aren't songs" ... that doesn't really make them any less ridiculous.
