Ooh nice one I'll give that a listen. The original song that is sampled in Tearz is incredible. It sounds almost like it was specifically designed to later be sampled.

I don't mind Gangsta Boo. I'd never listen to just her though. Whitney Peyton sounds good on wax, but she sounded different when I seen her with RA, Potluck, and Black Pegasus. I can't say what it was. Everybody sounds better in the studio though. I dig the song she did with DJ Clay on A World Upside Down.

was curious about her so i clicked on the video. first line of the song she mentions lombard street. got me wondering so i go look and she's from philadelphia. the suburbs, apparently. which makes sense, cause lombard street is not twisted at all, in layout or even metaphorically. that completely made me check out thirty seconds in.

Her live show, 100 times better than just a couple years back, has a solid live band. I'll be honest I never really looked into where she was from I just assumed she was from Ohio because she's done a lot of shows in that Ohio/Michigan area. Which makes sense considering it's not exactly a 20 hour drive to those areas.

Everlast is still a good rapper, he definitely wouldn't be working with ILL Bill, Bill don't give a fuck about your name and Everlast isn't exactly carrying much weight in the mainstream. TBH, ILL Bill rapping with him probably gives Everlast more cred than if he had tried to make a House of Pain comeback. Plus man, you're talking about having an issue with them sampling some Jay-Z shit when Jay-Z's done the exact same, even taking Biggy Smalls own raps and putting them as his own. Sorry, "paying homage" lol. Either way man I hope you keep bumpin this shit, it's pretty dope just to hear the old and new school flavor mixing on some harder shit.

Everlast is great. I have two or three of his albums that I constantly play.

A couple of things I've been listening to:

August Greene - Black Kennedy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKrLd6SX2dU
Seemingly this is a new project Common is working on, but as far as anyone would know it's just a new Common song. Nice, summery vibes to it. Common is the man.

Dizzy Wright - Accept My Flaws Pt. 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yNGM61nRRk

That Colorblind sample is massively played out, but I think it works beautifully on this. Deep lyrics and a solid hook....this isn't new, but I first heard it the other day and it's stuck in my head. Great stuff.

Actually, I was under members list and saw UncannyIowan and clicked latest posts and that was the latest one, but it was also pretty weird since I was playing What It's Like at the same time as reading the post. He's got a new album out this year, but I read it's not a hip hop album.

I just wish his voice could hold up live. I saw him perform on SNL and it was terrible. Music was on point but the vocals suck.

That sound is a staple of the East coast but I definitely know the track you're thinking of. But I mean I literally can't think of a single rapper from EC that doesn't have a song or several that sound like this.

When I hear this style of beat I immediately think of Jay-Z's song off Blueprint, "U Don't Know". Just Blaze had a pretty noticeable sound. Shit I even have a song where we sampled a Sam Cooke joint and it sounds like this shit lol.

I just remembered we also did a song where we sampled "Jolene" by Dolly fucking Parton. I didn't even know that shit until we went to drop the album and my counterpart/producer cut all the songs we had sampled. That also meant we lost our song where we sampled Billy Idol's "Eyes Without A Face". My guy had some wild shit he would sample. One minute he's pulling shit from Earth, Wind, and Fire and the next minute it's Dolly Parton lol.

U Don't Know is the one I was talking about before, it's the exact same beat more or less. It's easily done to be fair (though less understandable when you're sampling a very famous song made by Jay-Z ffs), I spent ages on a sweet, melodic beat when I first started that I was really proud of, finally put it up expecting some good feedback and within two minutes of uploading it I had a comment saying "you bit Skinnyman"...and he was right, I fucking did.

I wouldn't consider "U Don't Know" a very famous song or even a famous song by Jay-Z. Plus we're talking Jay-Z. How many lines has that dude stolen from Biggie? (go up to that UI post Donald quoted and I basically said the same thing years ago lol). And it's hip hop, there are just certain sounds that you constantly hear and go "Oh shit that sounds like that Ghostface beat". A lot of these producers sample the same songs over and over and over, big names rap on them over and over and over.

Never heard of Skinnyman until now. Pretty dope.

If you're good enough, you can pretty much sample anything and make it work. I'm still at a basic level where for the most part I can only sample soul and some jazz on my boom bap stuff, and soundtrack instrumentals for the heavier beats...the real masters can create stuff where you really would have no idea what the original sample is, or where it came from. Mobb Deep's beats are a masterclass in manipulating samples to create something completely unique - mostly fairly standard piano loops which have been pitched down and chopped to create really dirty, threatening beats.

This is a good example of a beat that comes from an unexpected source (Eva Cassidy's 'Fields of Gold') but works perfectly. It's also one of the best hip-hop tracks you've (probably) never heard of. Astonishingly good.

Yeah I'm not saying you shouldn't copy Jay-Z or anything, I'm just saying I would expect a hip-hop producer to be aware of the original and steer clear of doing something so similar. I mean I heard it and instantly knew it was identical to U Don't Know, I would expect anyone who considered them a big hip-hop head to know that song, it's hardly underground.

TBH it might well be that the producer knew it had been done before and didn't care, and that's fair enough - it's less forgiveable when nothing new has been done with it though, there are loads of examples of the same sample being used in completely different ways. WhoSampled is a godsend in that respect - any time I'm using a sample that is reasonably well-known (the dream is finding something to sample on Youtube with views under five figures, then you know you're likely to be covering new ground) I check there first - it's a pretty exhaustive list of samples used over years, and I've had to kick plenty of ideas into the grass when I realised they'd been done before.

Not sure how familiar you are with the legend Esham, if you listen to any of his records from 89-96ish he has a lot of crazy sampled stuff that sometimes you can pick it out others you're like hold up, what the hell, he just sampled Alice In Chains?? I would say peep KKKill the Fetus or Closed Casket albums.

Q-Tip, another dude who used a lot of Jazz samples before it was a thing.

Me personally, with my music, I tried to stay away from sampling not even for legal reasons just personal preference. I have so much shit in my brain that I always tried to work with people who had the same approach. But there are some beats that I have destroyed that had just a little sample off GZA's Liquid Sowrds, the track "Labels", and you'd never even know it. Wish I still had that joint.

Right right, I hear ya. I'm just saying, that particular sound is something that was around before Jay-Z and well after. It's like, how many times have we heard a rapper kick a flow to the same drum pattern as "Rapper's Delight"? That "bom bom bom, bom bom bom ba domp".

But for heads like us, who loved Blueprint, yeah we're hearing that U DONT KNOW sound on a lot of tracks.

Simon
February 23rd, 2018, 12:42 PM
I only knew Esham as one of the white rappers that Eminem used to vaguely diss (or send love to, I forget) in the early days like Cage etc.

I will always prefer sampled stuff as I love the aesthetic and prefer that 'real' sound, but even if I was more into creating completely unique beats I find the synthetic sounds so tinny and electronic that I just can't enjoy them at all. The odd time that I move away from boom bap I find them a little easier to work with, modern beats are more suited to that electronic sound, but for the most part I only use synths to add a little bit of depth to my beats. For example, I've been making beats for about four years now, and I still don't have a single bass instrument that I like - most of my beats either have quite shitty bass sections with crap instruments, or have bass added by just lazily adding a partynextdoor filter to the original sample to emphasise it's bass notes.

I think as you said it's partly because Just Blaze's beats all have a very similar style, so a beat could sound played out for sounding similar to that style even if it was actually using a fresh sample. Weirdly I don't think that Kanye's early soul-sampling stuff or Premo's boom bap have that problem - they're immediately recognisable as Kanye/Premo beats, without all sounding the same.

Esham is black and it was the other way around. Eminem has mad love for Esham, one of his idols, shouted him out with the "I'm a cross between Manson Esham and Ozzy" and for some reason Esham being the bitter dude he was about people "jacking" his acid rap style made about 20 diss tracks on Em on the album "Tongues" lol. Then on the Warped Tour, Esham and I think his dude TNT got into a brawl with members of D12. I think Esham got his eyeball knocked out lol. E is a weird dude.

To the 2nd part....You just need to get mugs who can play instruments or learn yourself. The guy that produced 90% of my music was a self-taught musician. He started out as a DJ and over time due to making beats he learned how to play piano, guitar, and drums so we would normally have at the very least some live drums and guitar on tracks. Not like rock-rap bullshit but like OUTKAST ATLIENS type sounds.

They put Cage right in the middle of the show last night and the crowd was digging him. You could see that he was having fun. It seems like him and ICP have became friends from the way they were big upping each other. Lyte and Ouija Macc did a Lil Rydas set, then some band from NY called Sylar went on. Attila went on after Cage. ICP did about an hour set. It's always cool when they do Prom Queen. They ended the show with Bang! Pow! Boom! and it was after 1 in the morning before it was over. I can't go to the DCG Con, but I think I'm going to the GotJ this year. It's been way too long since I've gathered.

I find it cool that 2 long time ICP haters in RA the Rugged Man and Cage are now tight. Cage even said last year at the Gathering that he had been waiting his whole life to perform there.....

They did Prom Queen? That is right up there in my top 10 of favorite ICP tracks. I had a rock band side project while I was rapping and I tried like 10 times to get them to cover that song. We even had a keyboardist so we could have done some of the synth sounds.

Speaking of Biggie, Craig Mack announced dead at 46.

I never really listened to his stuff much. I think I might have put on Project: Funk Da World like once. But he had a cool voice, and if nothing else, was a part of one of the most historic songs in hip-hop. I also really like the original. His lines are better than what he ends up delivering on the remix.

I'm not a music nazi but I do respect that at 36 I'm not exactly the target demographic so keep that in mind when I make this statement. But has there ever in the history of hip hop been a more stale stretch of music than say the last 10-15 years? Obviously I'm talking mainstream as my underground roots keep me planted in a nice spot but holy shit....I mean I get that I grew up with MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, Tag-Team, but we also had legit hip hop in the mix.

Now it seems like the only players that are actually rappers are from the 90's and everything else well....I mean when the catch me outside chick is getting nominated for an award and Cardi B is breaking records....There's definitely something wrong with how this genre is being presented imo. Because again, at least when Vanilla Ice was selling trillions, you could still turn on Yo! MTV Raps and get good shit in the mainstream like Public Enemy.

I agree, the amount of mainstream hip hop that interests me now is far far lower than the amount I used to listen to. I don't love where the genre has gone as a whole. There are still good artists at the top - I personally think Drake puts out consistently very good music in his own unique style. Kendrick is a young legend. J Cole is very solid. Kanye, whenever he drops stuff, is still killing it. But these positive examples don't change what I said before... there used to be a plethora of great artists in mainstream hip hop, now there are only a few. I used to get excited by, say, 15 to 20 albums a year and now it's more like 5.

I think the Cardi B album is pretty good though.

See, what trips me out is that I don't even consider 90% of the shit they call "rap" actual rap music. I listen to Drake, Kanye, Lil' Wayne, and I just can't get into it.

What's funny is the minimal stuff I've heard of J. Cole I was actually very impressed but he's still not someone I'm going out of my way to listen to because it's just not my thing. Again, that could just be old age creeping up but I still bump new shit it's just not what is plastered all over magazines and t.v. and Twitter.

I bet though 20 years ago there was a dude just like me going "Fuck man this Master P bullshit is not Rakim fuck this" But I'm not even going that deep with it I just don't see the effort. At least for every Master P record you had like 30 other acts killing it. Now it's like shit, if you're not some shit that could tour with Justin Bieber, you're not going even a factor.

You have these fucks like Takashi 69, Lil Xan Boy-who by the way is performing (yeah I was shocked that any of these lil bitches perform) here in Des Moines this summer and I'm willing to catch an assbeating by security to fuck this kid up. Not for 2pac, just for the simple fact that I fucking hate the direction people like that have taken a genre I love. They're made it so dumbed down that literally all you need is 100,000 youtube plays of some simple ass shit repeating over and over and you're getting mad fans and money.

I'll take Master P over any mainstream trash out right now.

if you know you know 9/10
the games we play 8.5/10
hard piano 7.5/10
come back baby 9/10
santeria 8.5/10
what would meek do 8/10
infrared 9/10

favorite track obviously a toss up between the 3 I have at 9's but I'm gonna say my fave so far is If You Know You Know. it's a short album more like an EP clocking in at 22 minutes- seems to be what Kanye is going for since his album is also supposed to be 7 tracks. but that's fine with me, although I'd like a little more length this is no filler at all which is refreshing when compared to an 80 minute hip hop album that drags.

I respect anyone who can hustle. Do I respect his skill level? No more than I would respect people like Justin Bieber's guitar skills I guess.

I was reading a shit ton of comments and people were like "Drake sold millions more than Pusha T obviously he's better" That's a tough pill for me to swallow because when you say someone is BETTER that's about skill and anyone who listens to Drake and thinks he's a better rapper than Pusha T is just in a different lane than I am musically.

Growing up and to this day, album covers meant a lot to me. When I started doing music, early on a guy told me that the album cover would be one of the top 3 ingredients to selling my shit and probably the most important since it's the first thing people see. You could have a dog shit sounding album and nobody knows who you are, but if you're album cover looks sweet, they might just grab it.

That's how a buddy of mine found out about a lot of underground shit like Esham for example. Here was a rapper with this Satanic imagery on his album cover. This was probably 1993, nobody in our area had a clue who this kid was but his album cover stood out like a sore thumb among the likes of Naughty by Nature and the like where it was usually just dudes in black leather standing in the streets. Esham had some crazy ass album covers.

I just can't imagine someone not on Kanye's level dropping some cover like that....but then again, I'm 36.....I was able to experience the joy of album artwork unlike many younger than me who could not give a fuck less as long as it downloaded to their Apple device.

What's wrong with the album cover? He recorded the album in the Wyoming mountains or whatever, it's a nice picture of that, the place where this all happened. As for the "I hate being bi-polar it's awesome" wording, I've heard it's pretty well in line with the content of the album although I haven't listened yet. Heard some people saying that should have been the title of the album instead of ye.

The picture of the surgeon would have made sense if he stuck with the "Love Everyone" album title/theme

The Daytona album cover is another odd choice but I think it works strangely well.

Daytona is a perfect 22 minutes of music.

It's not the worst album cover by any means but it still looks like shit. Looks like he just screen shotted a pic from someone's Instagram. He's had some pretty sweet covers in the past, even ones that are pretty basic like College Dropout that were still pretty fresh.

I like it although I think it's my least favorite Kanye album. It's got some good stuff but for a 24 minute album it just doesn't pack enough punch, unlike the Pusha album which is flawless so I don't mind the length. Violent Crimes is my favorite at the moment, I think it's a pretty great father to daughter track with Kanye being at his most real on this album. No Mistakes and Yikes are my other favorites. I Thought About Killing You is interesting, once the beat kicks in and he starts rapping it's a pretty fire intro, but the beginning part goes on a little long. Ghost Town was my least favorite at first but it's grown on me. Cudi sounds pretty bad on it but the ending part by 070 Shake (nothing hurts anymore, I feel kinda freeeeee) is satisfying even though it sounds like some teenage pop shit.

he pretty much always sounds constipated. I have long been intrigued by the appeal of Kid Cudi. I mean I'm not a hater, I enjoy his contributions to Kanye stuff and Day and Night was a jam, but does he even have a good voice? I can't tell. It sounds like monotone moaning most of the time but there's something about it that's soothing. He has good melody. idk he is an enigma. I will report back when Kids See Ghosts drops on whether I can tolerate him in larger doses.

I like ghost town though, it's grown on me as I said and I find myself listening to it frequently. the end part gives me the feels but then again so does a lot of pop music. seems like a fairly divisive song, some people say it's the best and some say it's the worst.

GWAR
RA the Rugged Man w/ A.F.R.O.

Other than CKY and Attila this is starting to look pretty sweet. It was that same one where someone threw a shit/pissed filled watermelon at Tia Tequila (which was still fucking disturbing). I think that soured a lot of legit artists coming to future Gatherings.

I also hope that they put Cage on the main stage this year and not that bitch ass early afternoon side stage slot he got last year. Honestly, I was thinking Cage's next record, the Sam Hill one, should be a Psychopathic release.

And I know it's not going to happen but I would love to see some MNE flavor. Twiztid, ROC, G-Mo, Lex the Hexmaster, but it's probably not going to happen. Just judging by certain posts on social media it does seem like some of the bullshit is finally dying down. ICP posted a pic of The ROC a week or 2 ago, I think for his birthday or some shit Idk.

What's funny is Monoxide will be the first one to be all "I'm not this and that" and try to show love to "juggalos" or whoever. He will call out some of these geeks online like Child's Play Ninja but they have people like him on their end who actually work for them like that big idiot who tags along with Madrox everyone, Big Vin or whoever the fuck that juggalo nerd is.

GMO I don't think has really said much has he? He did the Violent J diss track which is funny as hell but didn't really do anything because the gap between Violent J's popularity and legend status and G-Mo is like Mars to Earth so it kinda fell on deaf ears.

It did feel like half of Year of the Sword were weird disses on ICP and their crew but oh well, everyone knows MNE is dope but will never be on that same level which is probably why they have such a hard time accepting reality.

WTF
Eminem just dropped a new album. BRB

Can't wait to listen to this, seems like it's getting rave reviews. If it stoked a fire in him that led to a fantastic album then I'm fully behind him, but the target of his anger seems to be the negative reviews of his last album...but it was bollocks, he must be aware of this? I mean more or less every song had the same structure with a pop hook.

EDIT: Having said that, I went back over Revival recently and found myself really enjoying Arose. Even when he's scraping the barrel there's always *something* good there. And even though Em is now at a Simpsons level of "fuck me he's been shit longer than he was ever good", he still throws out the odd sign that he's still got genius in him - Bad Guy off...the album before Revival, I forget the name...is an astonishing song, up there with anything he's ever made IMO.

RuneEdge
August 31st, 2018, 6:33 AM
Like you said, he always shows signs that he's still got it. You could probably put together one solid LP top to bottom from the last three albums if you picked out the best tracks. I want to believe its pressure from the record label that leads to the inclusion of those tracks with the pop hooks.
And yeah, this new one seems like his reaction to our reaction of his last album.

Bad Guy
Rap God

On second thoughts looking through the track listings again, there really isn't much to choose from (I'd throw Space Bound in there along with what you listed). I think I must've confused his tracks with his guest features. He's had the odd one with Yelawolf, Slaughterhouse, etc that were decent.

Simon
August 31st, 2018, 7:52 AM
Yeah he seems to raise his game for his guest appearances, particularly with people he respects. I sort of feel like he is almost two separate people artistically, the pop star and the hardcore rapper. Clearly there is pressure on him to keep his albums a certain way to maximise money - big, rock-style drums, pop melodies, guest hooks and simple flows...whereas his guest appearances are more like 'real' (ie. old) Eminem, with more freedom to just do what he wants to do. He's always upped his games for rappers he respects - general consensus is that his first verse on Renegade off the Jay-Z album is the best he's ever done for example - but it stands out even more nowadays when his own stuff is so watered down. That recent verse on Caterpillar was great, and personally I think his verse on Forever is probably the best he's sounded at any point since MMLP.

Fro

I think you could take MMLP2 (a blistering 106 minutes with the bonus tracks included) and easily cut it down to a great 45 minute album. Some tracks you excluded from it which I feel are good songs:

Legacy
Evil Twin
Don't Front
Wicked Ways
Groundhog Day
Beautiful Pain

I am also a big fan of:

Cold Wind Blows
Going Through Changes
25 to Life
So Bad
Framed
Castle
Believe

And then there's the tracks have pop hooks but are actually really enjoyable:

Love the Way You Lie (can we all admit this is a classic song? no? fine, your loss)
The Monster (ditto for this one)

The below I wouldn't put in the same class as the above 2, but are still very good:

Walk on Water (yep this is a good track despite the choppy flow)
River (if you don't like the Ed Sheeran hook on this you might not have a soul)
Like Home

Then you've got the Shady XV and Bad Meets Evil albums which have gems like:

Psychopath Killer
Vegas
Welcome 2 Hell
The Reunion
Take From Me
Echo

First listen through...not good. Em's beat choices are just so bad. The only one that gets me going is Lucky You, and even that is just a slightly inferior rip-off of an earlier Joyner track, I Don't Die...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzHJ2aZR6e4

Hopefully this will grow on me with further listens, I haven't got into it lyrically at all yet. But those beats man, Christ they're so fucking...dull. Not terrible, they don't try anything interesting enough to fail in any notable way. Every track just sounds like the filler from a better album, the sort of thing that gets thrown on towards the end of the album as a cool-off before the final bangers.

Joyner is a fucking boss though - I actually didn't realise how big he already was (thought the Not Racist thing was his breakout moment and it wasn't long ago) so it's not the game-changer I thought it was, but it's good to see him getting some shine off of Em, he could be a monster in the future.

yea pretty blah on first listen. Some good verses and moments mixed in with a lot of bad beats and hooks. it's so dense with lyrics that none of his lyrics really stand out anymore.

Stepping Stones is one of my favorites. I think his main problem is he has absolutely nothing to rap about anymore so even though this breakdown of how D12 disbanded is completely unnecessary it's still nice for him to direct his lyricism toward something of substance.

MGK's diss was terrible. Was it even a diss? He spent more time praising Eminem than really doing anything of worth on the mic. Em literally made 10-15 dudes relevant, I don't even know when the last time I heard a peep out of MGK. Then again I don't seek out cats like him so maybe he's been doing some great shit the last 10 years, last thing I saw of this kid was him trying to play guitar, maybe last year or some shit it was terrible.

I told someone, Eminem is the Ric Flair of rap. He has made more talent relevant and more popular than they were before he spoke on them than any other rapper in the history of the game. That's why soooo many people early on were trying to get him to bite, they'd make entire albums dissing him and he would be like naw I'm just going to diss Mariah Carey and the next thing you know people give a fuck about Mariah Carey again lol. It's like that with this album, you hear how pissed Joe Budden was about his name getting shit on? That dude has never had a good song, never had a good album, lyrical but boring as fuck, and I bet you 20 people went out and listened to his shit after the fact.

Well there was "The Warning" but that was a while ago too. The thing is, he hasn't really had the need to release diss tracks in recent years, so that wouldn't be a valid reason to write him off.

Oh yeah I'm not saying he wouldn't be able to kill anyone any more, I'm just thinking that if he hasn't released a diss track since his overall music went to shit, maybe he's lost that art too. The assumption that he'll come back and murder MGK might be wide of the mark. Hope not though, his diss tracks have often been among his best stuff - it's a shame that I Remember was wasted on a no-mark like Everlast, because that is as complete a destruction of someone's character as you could ever hope to see. Literally did Everlast's own genre better than him.

I don't think Eminem has lost the art. IMO it comes down to whether or not he actually has any meaningful points to make in this beef. Because Em's ability to express his points shouldn't be questioned. Having said that, I agree that I don't see Em "destroying" MGK because I don't know what he has on him that he can bring up in a diss track. I guess we just wait and see.

Let me ask you an honest question...Did you listen to this new release? If you don't think Eminem doesn't still "got it" then you are completely out of touch.

The fact is this...MGK didn't even really diss Eminem. And what Em said about the kid made MGK's response even less because Em bodybagged him with a couple bars. The only people who hear MGK's "diss" and think it was good are ignorant-and that's not even a knock as most fans I see praising MGK are hot bitches so I'm not expecting Madi and Emma to know how corny that diss truly was.

Eminem has reached such a high level that he's basically bulletproof. When you realistically look at the people he slammed on this record, who is even remotely close to this status? Who did he diss that could stand side by side with the tenure, the respect, the actual skill. Nobody. I have never in my life purchased an Eminem record, I've never bought his merch, but I'll be damned if even some young Lil Xan idiot and the people who are into that bullshit pretend like Eminem doesn't have it.

No mate I didn't listen to it, I just threw out a load of opinions based on what I thought it might be like.

Eminem has essentially been terrible for years. Lyrically repetitive and dull, flow went over a cliff as he moved towards that stop-start staccato style, and his beat selection is awful. The fact that he occasionally shows he's still capable of genius only makes the whole thing more annoying. I know you're constantly desperate to place yourself as the outsider telling the sheep how it really is, but the idea that Eminem is still anything like the force he once was is just idiotic. And I'm one of the biggest Eminem fans going, he's probably the main reason I got into hip-hop in the first place.

Speaking of beat selection, I've been listening to a lot of Jay-Z recently and fuck his beat selection has to be the best of all time. Always manages to stay current while remaining true to 'real' hiphop, he aligns himself with a wide array of all the best producers without ever losing his own style or feeling like his albums lack cohesion, his more commercial stuff is always poppy without being annoying, and he hardly ever seems like he has filler. The Black Album in particular is crazy good for beats.

Obviously he is the force he "once was" because his album went #1 and massive amounts of people are talking about him.

"Constantly desperate to place yourself as an outsider telling the sheep how it really is" There's nothing desperate about pointing out the reality. The reality that here you are doing your best to pretend you're "one of the biggest Eminem fans going" yet trying to water down his contributions that are still massive to this day. Remember the last time he was on BET? Nobody talked about shit that happened on that awards show, nobody even remembers who won a damn thing, but everyone remembers Em's Trump bashing, right? And it was met with a lot of praise as Em using his privelege to spread a message to not just "WHITE AMERICAAAAA" but America in general. Jay-Z goes on Anderson Cooper or whatever, nobody cares. Eminem drops a Eminem-esque freestyle on Trump and we're still talking about it almost a year later.

So again, downplay his relevency all you want but as "one of the biggest Eminem fans going" you sure as fuck don't sound like a fan.

And yeah, if you're bumping that Lil Xan, that 69, you are a fucking clown and should never touch beats again. You'd be the same dude bumping Puff Daddy back in the late 90's going "Oh man this dude is so hot". You're a trendy ass rap fan, just listen to your beats. You just go with whatever is popular and by the time anyone hears it, they're on to the next. That's not saying you don't have good beats but you would struggle if someone asked you to make something original and not whatever is trendy in American hip hop.

It's not that Jay-Z had good selection, it's that Jay-Z just has that ability to make almost any kind of beat work. His selection isn’t exactly great, and Eminem's isn't that bad. You clearly just have a preference for the more old school style, which is shown in the beats you make yourself.
If you call yourself a fan and don't like Eminem today, then you are exactly who he's talking to on this new album.

That's just one of the views I have as to why he's still at his best. My first question I asked you was if you even listed to his new album because I have no idea how you can listen to that killer record and question if he still has it or not. Claiming to be some huge Eminem fan while slighting his skill level because....well I honestly don't know why you would question his ability.

So yeah, the fact his album went straight to #1 means a lot for someone at this stage of their career. That's fucking impressive. Not to mention, it's extremely well-received by so many different groups of fans whether they're trendy commercial fans or hip hop heads.

#1 record? Check
Best album he's done in 10 years? Check

The guy is Jordan on the court with dudes half his age and he's smoking them all. And he didn't even have to promote his shit he just dropped it out of the fucking sky.

And you're fucking crack rock high if you hear Eminem beats and think they're whack. Especially this album. I have a feeling this argument is going to be you digging and reaching for anything to make Eminem seem "less than". Which is why geeks like MGK had such ill disses like clowning Em's beard and how much money he makes and how influential he is to all these bleach blonde white boys who think because they cross their arms and curl their lip like Elvis we're supposed to be impressed. MGK thinks because he took a powerbomb off the stage and wears red skinny jeans he's about that life. lol.

Yeah it's ok. Starts off a bit dull but gets better as it goes, all the stuff about MGK wanting to be him is fire, and the line about having to give him a career in order to destroy it was great too. The Diddy line would have been a killer if he didn't draw back from it at the end.

Oh and the beat is boring as fuck too, but that's no surprise. Partly because it's Em, partly because diss tracks invariably seem to have zero effort put into the production. Apart from Pusha, the Adidon beat is awesome.

-Not much to say about Daytona that hasn't been said already. In Pusha's words, "if you know, you know."

I highly doubt Em will diss Jay Electronica but it would be awesome if he did. I love Jay Elec but it would be the lowest hanging fruit diss target. The guy's 41 years old and has never put out an album. Em could kill him with 2 bars.

And if he induced Jay Elec to write and release a new song that would be incredible too.

so Kanye announced a new album Yandhi for 9/29 and also a collab album with Chance the Rapper "Good Ass Job" which was what he planned to call his 4th album after Graduation way back in the day. I'm not huge on Chance (I don't dislike him I just think Coloring Book was way overrated) but his style fits the old College Dropout style pretty well with all the choir type tracks he does. Very excited for both these projects.

Yandhi would appear to be a sequel to Yeezus.

Someone needs to tell Kanye to stick to beats. Maybe do some Danger Mouse approach where he makes all the music and then gets a guest or multiple guests. Dude hasn't appealed one bit to me on the mic since "Through The Wire". I'm not into his robo-auto tune vocals and his flow is whack.

Thoughts on it?

My bad, dude. Distracted af till I just remembered this.

Love it. On first listen wasn't too sure, just didn't connect fully with his previous material. But a few listens in and I get where he's coming from on this one and how it's theme ties in with his usual approaches lyrically and vibe-wise. It's still Vince in so many ways, just wrapped up in this summertime block theme. And it's pretty fuckin dope. Especially 'Feels Like Summer'. And the vid for Fun! is outta there as fuck too.

Yeah man Bushwick Bill. The Jesus of the dark arts in rap. Although I do remember some footage of Bill suddenly being a Christian rapper and all he was doing was reading scripture over a beat lol. Then he went back to killing and maiming ninjas. Love the song he did with Twiztid and Anybody Killa off the Green Book album.

The album Igor by Tyler the Creator has gotten a lot of praise, and rightfully so. It's very good. His best album in my eyes. Doesn't have the hard thumping bangers of his early work but just very good from start to finish and tells a nice narrative. The lack of rapping threw me off somewhat on first listen but now I'm feeling the vibes.

Like a bunch of spoken word, just beats, singing? I haven't bothered to listen to this dude since he collabed with Pusha T. Earl Sweatshirt was cool in that whole mix, then his balls dropped and his voice changed and didn't hit me like it on tracks like Orange Juice.

My boy Frank is a super fan of these dudes though but I just could never buy in to what they were about. I don't know, the dude collabed with Miley and I was just like....word up lol.

There are rap verses just not a lot. The production is what shines through the most, it's really excellent. A lot of synth but he mixes in a ton of sounds and styles. There is singing and samples laced throughout and it none of it overstays its welcome. The tracks are short and sweet.

It's not like most Odd Future music. It's Tyler evolved.

The album follows a narrative of a love triangle where Tyler is seeing a person who is at the same time still seeing his ex-girlfriend, who's pulling him back to her and away from Tyler.

Have you heard Flower Boy, Fro? He started going that direction heavily on that album. Took a moment for me to appreciate it, but like you said, the production really shines as you adjust to all the different, non-rap stuff Tyler is doing.

Haven't heard Igor yet, but I'm definitely at least curious.

So this dude did a concept album where he's bisexual? Did I read that right?

He did a concept album. And I think he is a bisexual person in reality. The gender of his lover on the album might never be explicitly stated, just implied. The person pulling the lover away from Tyler is certainly a woman. My understanding is that the lover is a man. It's really not about that though. It's just a relationship/breakup album.

And to clarify, I wasn't saying this is evolved Tyler because it's a bisexual story. It's Tyler evolved because the music is so damn good and compelling (IMO). I just happened to throw the narrative of the album at the end of my post to give you an idea of what it's about.

Have you heard any recent Everlast? I enjoy most of it.

I like it too. "God Is" is one of my favorite tracks and a nicely written christian tune but I wish he re-recorded the vocals to not sound so hoarse. I'm sure it's intentional to give it a vulnerable/gritty sound but Kanye has a nice singing voice so it's a shame he sounds like needs to clear his throat at many parts of this song. He holds the melody well otherwise.

New Ye video with his dad in Wyoming is cute.

New Gang Starr record and everything surrounding the release (the videos, the story behind it with DJ Premier sitting down to start making beats with Guru's ashes on his desk) is just so lovely.

Hey guys. The new Gang Starr album is really good. Why didn’t you tell me about it sooner

I was quite disappointed with it - I expected the vocals to be shit because when has a posthumous album made of scraps of recordings ever worked, but I was surprised at how dull I found Premo's beats. The only track I still find myself listening to regularly is Family And Loyalty. Maybe I should give it more time.

Favourite non-Gang Starr Premo beats lads?

Common - The Sixth Sense
Bumpy Knuckles - B.A.P.
Xzibit - What A Mess, Eyes May Shine (Remix)
Nas - Nas Is Like, NY State Of Mind
Evidence - You
CNN - Invincible
Fat Joe - The Shit Is Real (Remix)
Big L - MVP (Remix)
Ludacris - MVP
Group Home - Livin' Proof
Non Phixion - Rock Stars
Biggie - Ten Crack Commandments
REKS - Say Goodnight
Rakim - When I B On Tha Mic
The Four Owls - Think Twice

Purple Haze 2 by Cam’Ron is quite good. Definitely a strong recommend for those who were fans of early 2000s Cam.

Hi, Fro! What have I missed over the last six years or however long it's been? Hopefully a few discussions on why Run The Jewels are the best.

Glad to see this group is still active and stored all my dumb opinions over the years.

R.A. has some star power lined up for his new album.

This album was so dope, and I haven't heard anything really about who is going to be on his next one. He threw some of us off by posting a picture of French Montana looking like RA on his new album.

I have to imagine, at the very least, AFRO will be on it and probably Vinnie Paz in some capacity.

I grew up on 90’s rap, loved it and glad I did best out there. I liked early 2000’s rap stuff too but man this new generation nowadays and from the last ten years I just can’t get into it. I’ve tried and tried but it just does nothing for me.

It's actually a pretty good jam. The original beat he wanted use is better, though. You can find it on YouTube.

RA the Rugged Man's new shit. Beat is fire. Dude even made a GYMKATA reference. I always felt bad for sleeping on this dude, but then I heard a song of his on one of those Eastern Conference compilations back in 2003-2004 and yeah, dude is DOPE AS FUCK.

Ok so this Eminem album is good IMO. I'm pretty sure I like it more than Kamikaze, which I liked. These beats are easily better than Kamikaze and his flow is a little better. The song writing is probably equal. The Alfred Hitchcock interludes and features are good, and there's hardly any crap female vocal hooks. Yes there's a Skylar Gray feature but just 1 so that kinda sound doesnt overpower you like many of his past recent albums. Stepdad is a pretty clear sequel song to "Framed", which was one of the most popular songs from Revival. The flow and style are so similar on those two, which is fine tho it makes Stepdad feel like a retread. Black Thought and Q-Tip have real nice features on Yah Yah, though the high pitched mechanical snare part of that beat is a little annoying.

I like it, though I'm not obsessed with it. I was very late in the game on Mac Miller, having only appreciated a handful of his songs prior to his passing. I've since been gradually going through his catalog. Currently really digging GO:OD AM.

But yea Circles has that chill, morose kinda vibe. I like him more when he's a bit more upbeat but I dig it. Good News is my jam.

Not sure if you got near any of the recommendations but here's some freddie gibbs on youtube. This will give you a taste like. His other stuff is a bit 'harder' but the fucking madlib sound is insane when it's on. Jesus christ

For you fans of Cage, the dude has totally embraced the dark side that he tried to stray from early on in his career when people would label him a "horrorcore" rapper. Now the guy is putting out music that sounds like something out of Esham's early 90's catalog or even cats like Bedlam and KGP.

He released "Death Miracles" early (original release Feb 18th) due to tracks already leaking which is weird because he isn't even on a label so who the fuck is leaking his entire album? I would say if he was pressing physicals (I think he is vinyl but not cd's) then I could see that as a lot of times the reason shit leaks is due to the people at the pressing companies doing it (so I'm told by snake label heads).

So cop that shit, keep him alive!

Circling back to this. If I go just on beats and samples, not on the quality of rapping (though obviously there is a lot of crossover), the ones that stand out would be:

Recognize by The Lox (so so good)
NY State of Mind for sure, I mean this is one of the best beats ever.
10 Crack Commandments
Courtesy by PRhyme
Nas is Like (amazing instrumental)
N 2 Gether Now by Limp Bizkit/Method Man.
Royce - Boom
Big L - The Enemy
Nas - Memory Lane (I love the smooth Premo in addition to the typical boom bat Premo)
Jay-Z - So Ghetto
PRhyme - To Me, To You
Bun B - Let Em Know

the fact that Premo gave one of his greatest beats to Limp Bizkit is funny. Granted, at least they've got Method Man on there who murders it. I hope Limp Bizkit paid through the nose to get that incredible hip hop combo (Premo/Meth) on their album.

British comedian Romesh Ranganathan (who I'm not generally much of a fan of) does a podcast called Hip-Hop Saved My Life, interviewing a guest about their relationship with hip-hop growing up etc. It's excellent. They've had some really good guests lately (Louis Theroux, Frankie Boyle, Lil Simz, Kano, MC Harvey) but the cream of the crop was DJ Premier last month. Really fascinating hearing in his own words how he ended up getting the Guru tapes off of Solar, having to sneak into the hospital to see Guru before he died because he wasn't allowed access, etc. Recommend.
