Here's that Kendrick track for those who haven't heard it:
https://soundcloud.com/topdawgent/i-1
Wasn't too fond of the beat during the verse, Reminded me of Chance The Rapper song which I hate(That's My Jam or whatever), but it gets so much better as it goes on. Also, the lyrics and flow was on point. I'll have to give it a couple more listens.

I could see this being the last track on his new album much like Compton. A lot of people thought Compton was weak but it worked brilliantly as the happy ending of GKMC (and I never disliked it anyway). This new track isn't a blow-you-away Kendrick track by any means but I expect it'll work brilliantly within the concept of his new album, and if it doesn't, it'll be a bonus track a la The Recipe. I like it though.

Think its just the unexpected nature of the start that caught me off guard. Not prejudging the album though incredibly excited .

UK hip-hop is possibly stronger than it's ever been right now. There are probably aren't any real top-tier rappers like there have been in the past (Skinnyman, Jehst, Blak Twang) but the sheer number of artists putting out good stuff on a regular basis is crazy. The High Focus record label in particular seems to have nailed a particular style of hip-hop with disenfranchised white boys taking the piss out of themselves...worth keeping up with the scene if you can because it's teeming with great tracks at the moment, and Pete Cannon is one of the most consistently fantastic producers around, who is gradually developing an unmistakable style the way Premo and Dilla did in the past, without veering into Timbo/Pharrell-style repetition.

That beat is such a fucking banger it's unreal. Nothing complicated, just nice stings, hard drums and a fuck off bassline.

Have you just seen the Duality video? I woke up one morning while my friend was starting watch that on my computer, and it was the strangest but best start to a day ever. Captain Murphy is the shit. FlyLo production with a focus on his hip-hop sound and unique persona and rap style. My only complaint about Murphy is the fact that Lotus gave away his identity so quickly. That was part of the appeal and a whole theme behind his first album. He should have kept the mystery up for way longer.

Stevie Stone is wack and Scoob is dead weight. Get rid of them and Strange would have a really solid roster.
Nash Diesel
October 1st, 2014, 12:20 PM
The downside to labels like Strange is they are built around one dude, and that one dude is who they put about 80% of the effort into because he was half the reason it started. Same shit with Twiztid leaving Psychopathic, even though it seems a little late for their old asses to try and make even MORE money. But like they said, the hatchet was 80% ICP, and whatever else they had benefited to an extent. All one has to do is check out that compilation DVD of their music videos, there's like 4 non-ICP videos that span almost 20 years starting with Chicken Huntin'. Twiztid has only done 2 professional quality videos, We Don't Die and Story of Our Lives.
Strange's roster right now is pretty dope, the 3 top guys, Tech, Prozak, and Rittz, they're pretty damn good and then if you're a fan of Kriz Kalliko (I'm not but some are). Seems like Ces Cru is building up their fanbase. They have Brotha Lynch as well. Wish ILL BILL would've done more than that one record with them. But at the end of the day they're going to first do what's best for Tech, and the rest will benefit in various ways.

Ah shit I guess I thought it was a Strange release. I do remember he was supposed to do a show here in Des Moines with Twiztid that fell through. Those Psycho-logical/Uncle Howie cats rarely seem to tour, maybe they're too old for this shit cuz they've been doing it for 25 years or some shit. Speaking of Twiztid, Necro said he was working on collabs with Twiztid and Tech N9ne for a future release. Should be sick even if guys like Necro and ILL BILL pretty much rap the same exact style on every track.

So I'm pretty sure that leaked FlyLo album wasn't the FULL album. Maybe I haven't listened to it enough to memorize it, but I'm watching the live stream on his website, and I'm pretty sure the songs are longer with parts that weren't on the album. If true, kudos on him for letting an incomplete project leak so there was still value to the full release. If I'm just crazy, then kudos to him for making an album that can sound new on the third re-listen.

Also Bert there are tons of great UK artists around nowadays. I'm not a fanboy by any means, for a long time I found almost all UK rap unlistenable. But in the past maybe five years or so there have been plenty of great artists come through. The problem is there has never been anyone really INCREDIBLE - Skinnyman's Council Estate Of Mind is the closest we've had to a classic album, and it isn't anywhere near Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, Ready To Die etc.

I heard a couple tracks a few weeks back and aside from the cornball collabs with Chris Brown, French Montana, and many others, Game at least still keeps bringing the lyrical heat. Yeah Clive, I saw that. It was alright, being a big Nas fan I was probably always going to enjoy it. I particularly liked the bit when he went back to Queensbridge. It did get me thinking about Hip-Hop documentaries though. There should be more weighty rap docs. There's so many great stories.

October 24th, 2014, 5:14 AM
Worth seeing then? I'm going to go on Monday and watch it. Only £8. I like Nas but don't know enough to call myself a 'fan'.
I saw this article on BFI a couple of months back; http://www.bfi.org.uk/news-opinion/news-bfi/lists/10-great-hip-hop-documentaries
The only one I've seen is the Block Party one, which was pretty good.

Nas' story is interesting (at least the early years) so I will definitely watch this when I get the chance, hopefully it doesn't have too much interview footage of the man himself cos he's a boring cunt outside the studio. Clive I dunno what parts of the Nas canon you've heard but I'd recommend giving it all a whirl, at the top of his game he's the best that's ever done it as far as I'm concerned. Almost certainly doesn't need to be said, but just in case: if you haven't heard Illmatic, go and listen now. It's incredible, the only perfect album I've ever heard in any genre.

Yeah, it's worth a watch. But it's not one of those special music documentaries that I'd recommend to everyone, whether or not they're a fan of the artist.

I would recommend getting involved with everything up to God's Son (you can fuck Nastradamus off, it was a rushed release of songs he knocked up in double-quick time after the original album was leaked), beyond that I would sadly have to say there is no album better than a 6 or 7, although there are a handful of unbelievable tracks - Bridging The Gap off Street's Disciple (which would be a good album if you took the best tracks off each of the two discs and binned all the shit that surrounds them) is as good as anything he did since Illmatic IMO.
I used to be the biggest fanboy of Nas and seeing him in 2003 at the Astoria was the best gig I've ever been to, but sadly the past decade or so he's fallen off hard.

Illmatic's perfection definitely resulted in his other records being underrated by many. For me, It Was Written is almost a classic. There's just a couple of weak tracks that should've been left off. Nastradamus is mostly a mess but I Am has some good highs alongside a few serious missteps ("Dr. Knockboot" ffs). StiIlmatic and God's Son are really solid albums but of course by that point his sound was far more mainstream. Like Simon said, Street's Disciple is way too long. Hip-Hop Is Dead and Nigger are very inconsistent, sometimes poor. He's underrating Life Is Good though - a real return to form, third/fourth best Nas record imo. One of the standouts of the decade so far.
The Lost Tapes is also an excellent unreleased comp.

I think you're right about Illmatic casting a shadow on the stuff that came after - I Am... is a fantastic album, albeit a little poppier than what people were used to. Small World is an unloved gem IMO, one of my favourite hip-hop tracks of all time - Biggie-esque storytelling over an incredible, atmospheric beat. Hate Me Now is an unreal track, and K-I-S-S-I-N-G was the first example of Nas really nailing the slower stuff (I suppose you could mentioned If I Ruled the World from It Was Written in this category though).
I need to revisit It Was Written at some point, I never liked it as much as others did with Illmatic, I Am..., God's Son and Stillmatic all superior CDs to me. might have to go at Life Is Good again as well, I can barely remember anything about it other than being unimpressed.
This has been done in various forms before but as a potential guide for Clive if you can't be arsed listening to entire CDs, I would hugely recommend going on Youtube and listening to...
Small World
Bridging The Gap
Nas Is Like
Rule
The Message
As We Enter
Surviving The Times
Hero
Hip Hop Is Dead
K-I-S-S-I-N-G
Get Down
Made You Look (and if you like it, the remix - Jadakiss and Ludacris just going absolutely spastic, one of the best ever collabos)
Book Of Rhymes
Thugz Mansion (and the acoustic version)
Just A Moment
Dance
Heaven
Virgo
Street's Disciple
All fantastic tracks.
Incidentally, does anyone else have a problem in threads like this with your PC losing the plot when there are too many videos embedded on one page? Sometimes it just slows down massively, other times it stops completely and displays a message about Shockwave not working.

Life is Good is the best Nas album other than Illmatic and It Was Written. I'm actually very tempted to put it at #2. That album didn't get nearly enough credit for the classic that it is

Have you listened to Life is Good? And if so, how can you possibly hold the opinions you state in this post?

Oddly enough, I experience the Shockwave Not Working issue pretty frequently, but have never experienced it in this thread. The embedded videos does make my computer take a little longer than normal, but again, my PCs a piece of shit, so I chalk it up to that more than anything else.
Listening through Run The Jewels 2 right now. As great as I expected. The beats are fucking mind-blowing, and the vocal delivery is more on point than what they did with the first album. I'm only halfway through, and I'll need to give it a couple more listens, but I might like it more than the first album so far. It's really hard to beat "Get It" for me, though.

You should. Granted I praise it more than most. Most people would probably not put it ahead of Stillmatic (and maybe not even God's Son) like I do. But it was very well received regardless of where you place it in his discography. Here's my brief review:
Tracks 1 to 7: Utter brilliance, particularly the first 5 which I'd say are actually flawless. #6 Reach Out with Mary J Blige is an old school joint that some people didn't feel, but to me it nailed that mid 90s style which I love. #7 World's An Addiction was a huge grower for me. I didn't like it at first but recently I've been listening to it on repeat just for the amazingly powerful 3rd verse.
Tracks 8 to 11: There is somewhat of a dip in the middle of the album but I don't think any track is "bad". Summer On Smash got a lot of flak but I think it's a great party track, I actually prefer it to The Don which was well received but I find the beat a little annoying, reminds me of A Milli (hot at first but gets old after you hear it a few times). You Wouldn't Understand is the weakest track on the album for me, but it's still solid. I wish it was a bonus track though.
Tracks 12 to 14: He finishes with a lot of soulful shit and this is where he gets into the main theme of the album which is his divorce and moving on from it. I love these tracks. He's on some real life shit instead of his street shit.
Bonus tracks: Fuck, these bonus tracks are amazing. Nasty was the lead single and is incredibly dope. Black Bond and Roses are both easily worthy of making the album, I love them both. Where's The Love is the only one of the 4 that deserves to be a bonus track, but it's still not bad at all.

Seriously, it's hard to pull myself away from this album. Listened to it twice at work and only didn't go for a third or fourth time because I didn't want to annoy my co-workers with the same songs over and over. Other than the obvious tracks(Oh My Darling and Close Your Eyes), I'm really digging Lie, Cheat, Steal and All Due Respect. As much as I liked A Christmas Fucking Miracle, it took me a moment to really warm up to it. Angel Duster blows it out of the water in my eyes, lyrically and beat-wise. Also, I'm usually not a big fan of "sex" songs, but Love Again has such an infectious beat. And the fact they got Gangsta Boo to come in and do the same subject from a female perspective dissuades any fear of it being sexist or anything like that.
Just a top notch album. I'm finally getting Pinata to see how it stacks up.

They make a great pairing of tracks, too.
Finally listened to Pinata. I was busy doing a lot of shit on the computer while listening, so I'll need to give it some more focus, but it's definitely a Top 3 album. Hard to say right off the bat if it beats RTJ2, but they're definitely on the same level of quality for me.
Also, if anyone checked out that Jimmy Spadez track I posted a few days ago and liked it, he released the full album the day after I posted it. Here's a link:

Looks like RTJ wanted some people to tag some walls for them and they came through.
Tag the Jewels is a worldwide street art initiative for which over 30 artists across 6 continents were invited to remix the group’s iconic album cover art - two opposing hands, one forming a gun, the other holding a chain.
The artists were given a very simple brief and the freedom to express their own unique interpretations of Nicholas Gazin’s original artwork.
These signature pieces designed by respected local artists have gone up contemporaneously on walls from Los Angeles to Lagos, Paris to Jakarta, Sao Paolo to New Delhi and many more. It is the first global installation of it’s kind.
Run the Jewels is grateful to these talented artists for their generous and inspiring contributions.

Yeah, it's worth a watch. But it's not one of those special music documentaries that I'd recommend to everyone, whether or not they're a fan of the artist.
And nice BFI list. Only seen Scratch and the ATCQ doc out of that lot.
Went to see this last night, thoroughly enjoyed it. What I found good was enabling the audience to have the context around the tracks. Listening to the album in it's isolation can only make you appreciate it so far, but having the back story made me appreciate it on a different level.
Worth seeing, but like you said, in terms of music documentaries it's not really up there.

Haven't heard RTJ2. Hated the original. That's no criticism of anyone who likes it though, it's just a style of hip-hop I don't enjoy. This new electro kind of vibe is not my thing at all. I'll probably end up checking it out at some point and might come back to it in the future as God knows half the albums I now love didn't hit me the first time round (Illmatic, Resurrection, Life After Death to name just three obvious classics that I was indifferent to for years). I'm not going to try to justify it, but I can at least try to explain it. During my formative years as a hip-hop fan I was mainly into a more aggressive type of rap, probably due to having 2pac and Eminem as an entry point. Though I liked Nas, it was mainly his more amped up stuff that I liked - Hate Me Now and One Mic being the most obvious examples. Whether by chance or whatever I then got into slightly less well-known rappers like Pun and Immortal Technique who were also on a more aggressive kind of vibe.
More relaxed hip-hop didn't really appear on my radar and when it did I never paid much attention to it. Rest assured once I caught onto that sort of vibe, Illmatic was my favourite album almost immediately and has remained so ever since :D

Lyrically Nas is one of the illest, but for some odd reason I've just never really found an album I could listen all the way through and say front to back, that shit was fire. To be honest, there's maybe 10 records of any style of music that I would say front to back are great, some of my favorites bands/artists I find myself skipping over 2-3 tracks. But again, lyrically, Nas deserves all the praise he gets because he's that good.

DJ Eclipse, Sabac Red, Goretex, and Ill Bill have reunited and a new Non Phixion album & tour are being planned.
Non Phixion Talk Reunion and Plans for 20th Anniversary
So, here’s the scene…2,000-strong are packed into the Best Buy Theater in Times Square for Cypress Hill’s annual Haunted Hill shindig to put it in the air for one of the strongest top-to-bottom hip hop line-ups in New York City in a long, long time: Cypress Hill with Vinnie Paz, Immortal Technique, and La Coka Nostra. Vinnie kills it! Immortal tears it up, and La Coka blows the place up for 20 or so minutes. Then—unbeknownst to the heads in attendance, and just moments after emcee extraordinaire ILL BILL asks the crowd if they’ve got love for the storied and sadly defunct outfit Non Phixion (whose material LCN regularly performs)—as if shot from a cannon, all four original members of the city’s own Non Phixion explode from the wings and burst into their classic joint “Rock Stars.” Sabac Red, DJ Eclipse, Goretex, and ILL BILL are back, and apparently, it’s for real.
Long gone seems the beef with Goretex that broke the fellas up a decade or so ago, and the mighty NP are on fire as if they’d never left. They rock “The C.I.A. is Trying to Kill Me,” “Black Helicopters,” and ‘If You Got Love” with passion and fire-spitting precision, and those who know, of which there were many, are equal parts stunned and satisfied. And just as they entered the stage, they leave in a veil of semi-mystery. However, in speaking with the group members, they are in-fact all the way back and have plans for the future.
DJ Eclipse says, “This has been in the works behind the scenes for a minute, but the performance was the official start of a new beginning. We’ve been planning this show for well over a year now and hoping that the response would be what it is. The feedback is already crazy and people really seem excited to hear we’ve regrouped and they will get a chance to see us perform. As far as a new album, I think that’s somewhere in the near future, but for the immediate, we want to get back out on stage and give the people what they’ve been asking for the last 10 years.” ILL BILL added, “Next year marks the 20th anniversary of Non Phixion, so we thought it would be dope to do something in 2015 for ourselves and all the people that love what we do. Timing is everything and all four of us agree that it’s time for the return of Non Phixion. It feels great to let the cat out of the bag.”
So, now that the cat is out of the bag, it looks like one of the most beloved collectives to ever bless microphones and turntables is set to shock the system once again. Probably the most consistent thing coming from fans’ mouths after the surprise performance was that “hip hop needs this right now,” and by that, one can only surmise they were referring to Non Phixion’s uncanny ability to blend true, New York-flavored hip hop with lyrics that’ll make your head spin and keep the brain working overtime.
There’s no need to shit on much of the current crop of rap “artists” in the mix these days; Non Phixion will do that simply by doing their thing, and their history speaks for itself. Goretex interjects, “It’s very rare that a group at the height of their fame and legacy pull the plug on itself. It’s even more rare when a force reappears that’s 10 times stronger than what it once was. I’ve always compared my experience in Non Phixion to working with a highly experimental terror cell. We’ve had a never-ending supply of targets to hit, and over the years, I was able to observe the impact Non Phixion has had on a lot of people. There’s people buried in the ground holding our album, so the impact we’ve had translates to a higher power. We are guided by the source, both positive and negative. The journey has just begun.”

Yeah, it is. I posted it earlier in the thread but it got removed for copyright infringement. Fucking banger.
Some of the new Eminem songs are interesting. A few are obviously MMLP2 extras. It's annoying linking youtube videos of them though because a lot of people are pitching the songs up or down to try to avoid copyright problems.

I loved Studio Leaks but it really should have been shut down a while ago. I feel like shutting down that one site could potentially cause a noticeable increase in hip hop album sales. As you said, there isn't a comparable replacement site. I still use soulseek and it works great but it doesn't have newly leaked stuff or obscure stuff.

What's everyones thoughts on Grime? I don't know if it warrants it's own thread, but this week they've been having 'grime week' on Noisey and it's been quite interesting.
I was into it back in 2003-2004, watching things like Risky Roads DVDs and playing that infamous Slimzee & Dizzee Rascal/Wiley set repeatedly.
I think it's just a fad coming back again into the mainstream though, so much of it is and was fucking shit.
But listening to Wileys new album makes me think there might be hope, it's probably his best effort in years. Also, quite hard to believe that it's been 10 years since Kano released his first album, which is still excellent in my humble opinion.
So yeah, discuss... thoughts on Grime?

I've only gotten into Dizzee Rascal and that's mostly due to the (pop) collabos he's been on. The little I've heard from other artists is pretty decent. I could probably listen to the average grime song over the average trap rap song.

Definitely. It's worth watching some of the old Lord of the Mics stuff. When they properly go at it, it's brilliant.
This was back in 2002 when Dizzee & Slimzee did that set I referenced;

Big Sean is the new Ma$e. He's makes good fluff and party records but he can also hold it down on tracks with legends. He was great on Clique (which is a good parallel to Mo Money Mo Problems in terms of the trio on each). I like Detroit vs Everybody but none of them really kill it. I wouldn't say Sean's verse sticks out as worse than the others and he certainly deserves to be on there.
I love that track Vegas, and not that I ever disliked it but Yall Ready Know has really grown on me, shit's tight as hell, one of my favorite Slaughterhouse tracks for sure. Psychopath Killer and Fine Line being the other standout tracks.

I've never been a fan of everyone in Wu Tang, the main 9 or however many, I don't even really fuck with the sub-groups and what seems like 100 rappers with a Wu symbol attached to their cover art lol. My faves are GZA and Meth, and Meth really killed it on this record. I'm a little over halfway through it and I'm digging it. I read an interview where Raekwon wasn't really feeling the direction but understood RZA's approach, he just wanted to hear more "grimey" beats, but then he was like wanting to bring in Dr. Dre to do production and that dude doesn't make beats that make me think of Wu Tang Clan at all. Would've been cool though, Wu Tang over Dre beats, but when you have a producer the caliber of RZA and the team he surrounds himself with, why look toward Dre where you're probably going to spend over a million or 2 on his beats alone?

Yep, dude is good shit and one of the few commercial artists that is new that I've gone out of my way to listen to. That's the thing I tell these cats, young and old, there's good rap out there you just have to put your ear to the right spot. Lamar is one of those dudes that yeah he gets the mainstream attention but he's not exactly winning awards and showing up on the red carpet like a fuckin poser. Good lyrics, good beats, and dude has a hunger to be the best of all time and he's not just trying to sell records to stake that claim and putting out garbage that is radio friendly. You either dig it or you don't, that's the rap I like, not these mugs trying to alter their shit to fit in with what's hot NOW because sometimes you miss the boat and you sound dumb.

If you're talking about those posts the media ran with those people were obviously joking.
You know Bert, I really wish that were true but not everyone is as musically advanced as you are from your generation. You're the Miley Cyrus generation, that's YOUR people my brother, and again, it's not OBVIOUS when so many people under the age of 25 these days are clueless to music history and the icons that built the sounds that they ruin. We need more people like you, I mean shit if you ever need anything you let me know, I have your back and will help you educate your generation!

I'm not the Miley Cyrus generation. I'm the Britney Spears/Christina Aquliera generation.

Doubtful. But I'm glad you have more faith in the youth today than I do. I won't lie, maybe a few people were just trolling after reading the initial responses but there's no doubt in my mind a good chunk were seriously unaware of who he was. There are kids who don't even know what the fuck a cassette tape is, it's not that hard to imagine the youth of today all wrapped up in bullshit music and technology wouldn't know musical icons from 50 years ago.
