You would not believe the power of reason. It's a fantastic programme. I'd advise anyone wanting to create original synth sounds, drum loops ect to use reason.

Also as dvda says an mcp for sampling is by far the easiest method. If you have an iPad I believe there's an attachment mpc for that now that's very reasonably priced.

That's odd you can't drag into the playlist, but there are other ways of doing this. In the mixer, try adding the Edison effect to one of the tracks(on the far right of the mixer, there are empty slots numbered 1-8 with drop down menus on the sides that lets you pick different effects, and one is Edison). Try dragging the song into there.

If that doesn't work, drag the song into the browser(the side bar that lists all the different effects, plugins, projects and all that mess) and it should add the folder the song is in to the list. Then right-click the song you wanted and click "edit". That will open it up in Edison automatically for you, but it will likely be tied to the master track if that's something you're worried about. In most cases it won't matter because you'll be transferring the sample into something else.

If this doesn't work, let me know and I'll try to help you out. If it does work, then I guess let me know if you have any questions from that point on how to manipulate your sample.

Cheers  it turned out I had the entry version of FL - I upgraded to the producer edition and now I'm able to do it. £80 but well worth it, already managing to kick out some decent samples.

Just got the news that DJ EZ Rock died over the weekend. For those that don't know, he was the other guy with Rob Base lol. "It Takes Two" is a classic, easily one of the most popular and well known of all time rap/dance songs.

That whole Future bit. That's my reason. Future is garbage.

Fro
April 29th, 2014, 7:45 PM
Yeah I did listen to it earlier. Andre was great (tho he's a shell of his classic self let's be honest).... but the Future parts were unlistenable as usual. Move that Dope is the only listenable song by Future I've ever heard and even that one's good in spite of him.

I get that Andre is from Atlanta and so is Future but can he please do better features? What's he done... Wayne, Rick Ross, Drake and Future?

New beat I'm working on if anyone gives a shit :D

https://soundcloud.com/sobmusic-1/give-it-up

at 1:03 theres a little clip or skip in the beat. is this intentional? also at times the lead keyboard/guitar melody goes slightly off beat. again this may be intentional but it sounds a bit off at the start and when the vocal comes in. id suggested scaling back the delay/reverb on it if there is any and possibly taking the volume down slightly. there is a few other parts where its a bit clunky as well.

good effort though mate. seems you have plenty of ideas going on and you are only just starting out. personal taste again but there are ways to clean up the sample so it sounds crisper and less crackly. again this maybe what you are looking for it to sound like.

Simon
May 2nd, 2014, 4:33 AM
Cheers for the feedback lads, it's still very rough - when I try to trim the samples down to remove those skips it goes out of sync with the drums and I haven't worked out how to fix it yet, still learning all the time though haha.

The crackling was deliberate on my part as I thought my drums sounded a bit too clean and fake alongside this old sample...I even added in a sample of some actual vinyl crackle at the start so it didn't start clean before the sample started :ashamed:

To make this post a little less self-indulgent, this track is a ridiculous banger by a guy I went uni with. That beat, eurrrrrrrgh.

MikeHunt

Can I suggest one thing to anyone making hip hop beat is to try and make one that is heavily syncopated. I've can't think of any off the top of my head that are You could really stumble on something very unique.

MikeHunt
May 2nd, 2014, 4:48 AM
Think of only counting on the "and" beat of a 4/4 throughout a whole beat. Don't change it stick with it throughout.

Simon
May 2nd, 2014, 4:52 AM
I don't understand any of that :(

MikeHunt
May 2nd, 2014, 5:02 AM
So if you count a regular beat as,

"one, two, there, four"

a heavily syncopated you count,

"One, and, two, and, three, and, four, and"

in the same time frame.

If you were to have a synth lead and baseline running off the straight count and drums only playing off the beat the sound would be totally unique to anything going on in hip hop right now.

Simon
May 2nd, 2014, 5:04 AM
Ah right, I sort of understand I think...I haven't really got to grips with making my own stuff from the database of instruments yet, where do you get your sounds from? Other than the drum beat (which is very basic) and the vinyl crackle, everything on that beat I posted is sampled.

I'm thinking of picking up some books about hip-hop sampling and beat production to help me, anyone recommend any?

MikeHunt
May 2nd, 2014, 5:18 AM
I would use reason for making sounds, I believe 7 is the latest version. You should be able to download it for free (you won't be able to save though) however you will probably need a midi controler if you are going to start doing that as doing it with your keyboard/mouse is frustrating.

As for books I'll have a look around my flat see if I've still got any left from uni, I think I've just got shitty buisness ones though.

Simon on have you considered going to an evening class on music production or djing? I would seriously consider taking up djing if this is what you are interested in doing as there is no better way of breaking down tracks than learning them inside out djing IMO.

Simon
May 2nd, 2014, 5:26 AM
Dunno if DJing is something I'm really interested in beyond adding scratches to beats etc. I'm definitely going to get a MIDI controller (does it make more sense to buy a MIDI or a keyboard that comes pre-loaded with instruments? They're more expensive I think but dunno if it's worth the outlay), any recommendations on what one?

MikeHunt
May 2nd, 2014, 5:31 AM
Get reason and just a plain midi controler.

MikeHunt
May 2nd, 2014, 5:36 AM
I've never used it but this would be a nice starting point for a midi controler.

There should be a starters thread and hip hop one.

Nash Diesel
May 2nd, 2014, 1:48 PM
lol, gear slutz? That's awesome.

Reason is a solid program to use. A few beatmakers I know use that as the foundation for some of their instrumentals, then they'll load their beats all chopped up by instrument into Pro Tools. I used to make beats but rarely would lay anything on them because they'd come out sounding more like background music to Resident Evil than something you could lay a verse down on, so 99.9% of my beats were for getting stoned and listening to when everyone was out of the house lol.

Stringer Bell

What have you guys been listening to lately? I've still been stuck on Freddie & Madlib. The new Pharoahe Monch is probably the only thing giving it a run for its money.

Also enjoying the new ones from L'Orange (beautiful instrumentals), Smoke DZA, Mobb Deep (surprisingly), Ratking, and Lakutis.

The YG and Future albums are pretty enjoyable, too.

Haven't given it many runs but wasn't thrilled with the new Cunninlynguists. Way too many phoned in guest spots.

Ringo

Yeah, still all over Piñata and PTSD. There's some great stuff on the YG and Future albums but I can only take them in small doses. Haven't got around to listening to any of the other stuff you listed - might as well grab that Mobb Deep and DZA now. Been hearing good things about this Ratking record. That too.

Not sure if anyone's been following this but Dr. Dre won so hard with Beats. They're selling to apple for $3.2 billion, Dre stands to make about a billion on the deal by himself, and now the new report is that "Apple is also willing to shell out high-ranking positions to both Dr. Dre and Iovine at Apple. It is unclear what the pair’s specific jobs will be, but it has been reported that they will work directly with Apple CEO, Tim Cook."

Isn't this like the third time Cannibal Corpse have been o the festival? And Biohazard is still a band?!

Not really looking like very many non-Psychopathic-affiliated Hip-Hop acts, which is a shame. Dizzy Wright could be cool, but other than that it seems like a bit of a weak line-up.

Love the new Roots album too. I like that it's short, I've listened to it a bunch and it makes it really easy to just throw on and enjoy.

The last album I bought was Freddie Gibbs and Madlib Pinata, which I think is the album of the year. I just bought it on cassette too for that extra dusty sound. Before that it was Danny Brown Old. Next up is probably gonna be the Roots album, and I'd like to grab the Pharoahe Monch too.

There's a freestyle and short interview with each on their youtube channel:

Rashad and Connor's freestyles were solid. Didn't know anything about Jarren Benton so I'm impressed with him. Rich Homie Quan is a lovely chap. Vic Mensa is Chance's buddy and sounds a bit like him. Durk & Bibby are Chicago Chief Keef kids. All about Kevin Gates - the Luca Brasi Story was top notch. And then there's Ty Dolla Sign and August Alsina who aren't straight up rappers anyway.

Great to see how much success Danny is having. I went to see him recently, the show was sold out and packed with a ton of teenagers which kinda surprised me, but it's awesome to see him doing well. Love that new Busdriver track with him and Aesop Rock, never thought I'd hear that.

As far as Your Old Droog, I'm really not sure. When I first heard it I completely dismissed the Nas talk, then the more I listened the more I thought it could be possible, but now I dunno. Regardless it's really, really good.

And I'm always down for some lists, top 10 of 2014 so far..

1. Freddie Gibbs and Madlib - Pinata (no question #1)
2. Pharoahe Monch - PTSD
3. Step Brothers - Lord Steppington
4. The Roots - ...And Then You Shoot Your Cousin
5. Schoolboy Q - Oxymoron
6. Blu - Good to Be Home
7. Skyzoo and Torae - Barrel Brothers
8. Ratking - So It Goes
9. L'Orange - The Orchid Days

I actually can't decide on a #10 so here are some more really good ones

Kevin Gates - By Any Means
Meyhem Lauren & Buckwild - Silk Pyramids
Apollo Brown - Thirty Eight
Isaiah Rashad - Cilvia Demo
Lakutis - Three Seashells
Smoke DZA - Dream Zone Achieve
Freddie Gibbs & The World's Freshest - The Tonite Show EP
Slaughterhouse - House Rules
Styles P - Phantom and The Ghost
Black Milk - Glitches in the Break EP
Your Old Droog EP (whoever it is, it's awesome)

http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.29385/title.rick-ross-absent-from-detroit-s-summer-jamz-concert

Rick Ross was slated to headline HOT 107.5′s Summer Jamz Concert Saturday night in Detroit but didn't reportedly due to a mob of over 100 people blocking his entry.

The controversy between the Maybach Music Group headman and Detroit may have something to do with a song released by Motown native Trick Trick, who released a song called "No Fly Zone," featuring Royce Da 5'9." The single's main message calls for a ban of any artist who doesn't collaborate with artists native to The D.

The plan succeeded as Ross did not perform as scheduled. HOT 107.5's program director, Jay Hicks, subsequently explained his absence to the crowd.

“I'm going to be real with y'all; I'm going to be real as fuck. We had Rick Ross right outside here tonight," Hicks said. "At about 11 o’clock, when he was pulling up to come into Chene Park, he was met by 100 individuals outside. We have tried to pull every resource together and asked him to come back. He is in fear of his life.”

The program director would go on to say that Rick Ross may never come back to Detroit because of the actions of the city and reiterated that Ross was in fear for his life.

"And he may never come back to Detroit, and that's no bullshit," Hicks said. "This is some real shit. He was in fear of his life and he is not performing here tonight."

Hahaha, this should happen at every concert.

So I looked up some of the albums talked about here and I've been listening to them.

Ratking - not really digging it.
Freddie Gibbs - Loving it.
Barrel Brothers - Loving it.
Swollen Members (shoutout to DVDA) - Really liking it.

Then on the website I found those I ended up downloading some random albums I've really ended up enjoying.

The first one being Donnie Darko - Redemption.

Here's one of the best songs off of it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTL0cWKfp3s

The second one being Speak - Gnarly Davidson vs The Marlboro Man

First off he supposedly wrote most of Gucci Gucci for Kreayshawn so you know he has talent for at least making pop rap records.

He also has an affiliation with Odd Future and did some songs with Mike G and Syd.

IMO College Dropout is a real classic, everything he's released since then has been a huge dropoff. That first album though, fucking hell. The beats.

BBF
July 17th, 2014, 5:53 AM
I don't think there has been a huge drop but a definite decline overall.

College Dropout and Late Registration were top notch, Graduation and MBDTF were solid but 808s and Yeezus were below par IMO.

Simon
July 17th, 2014, 5:58 AM
I liked Late Registration but even that was a huge drop off IMO...like I said though, to me College Dropout is a classic, 9/10 album. And for me (I've said this so many times I bore myself now) Never Let You Down is the best hip-hop track of the 21st Century bar none. Since LR I would argue he hasn't even released an album I'd describe as good, let alone great...MBDTF and Watch The Throne are patchy with fantastic isolated moments (All Of The Lights, That's My Bitch), the rest are mostly just rubbish. I know I'm in a minority with that opinion though.

I'd rate but LR and CD as 9/10. MBDTF and Graduation as 6/10 and the rest at about 4.

Watch the Throne is just a middling album I think. 5/10, actually a little disappointing.

I thought Good Kid Maad City was massively overrated as well :\ I don't tend to be one of those " God why are you going on about his famous album when he did a WAY better EP in 1991 that only six people heard " types but I honestly think Section.80 is a more enjoyable album...it doesn't hang together the way GKMC does, but ADHD, Rigamortis, Keisha's Song, Hi Power and Poe Man's Dreams are better than anything on GKMC in my opinion. Again I know hardly anyone would agree.

TBH the standard of major hip-hop albums has been below par for a long time. Eminem's most recent would be in my top 5 this decade despite being way way way down on his best period. I honestly can't think of a single CD since 2010 that I'd rank higher than a 7 - the Em and Kendrick albums would be there with Joey Badass' 1999 and Statik Selektah/Termanology's 2012, both good albums with some fantastic highs (1999's Survival Tactics, 2012's Up Every Night) but obvious filler throughout.

In fact after a quick look back through Wiki for rap albums of recent years, I don't think there's been a classic since College Dropout (2004) and hasn't even been a really GOOD album since Be by Common a year later. I don't want be to one of those bores that goes on about the golden era of hip-hop in the early-mid 90s, but I don't need to be to make my point - even 2003 had Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, Get Rich Or Die Tryin' and The Black Album which are all 8s in my book, and Deliverance which is a 9. A year further back you've got Original Pirate Material, God's Son, Phrenology and The Eminem Show.

I guess what I'm saying is that, as good as College Dropout is, it killed mainstream hip-hop. Stone dead. Luckily with the advent of cheap home recording devices and easy marketing tools like Soundcloud, it's incredibly easy to find awesome unknown hip-hop nowadays - below is a link to a zip file of a load of great unknown artists from both the UK and US (possibly a few other places, I forget) that people might like. Some real quality stuff is around if you're willing to dig.

Also Black Album is majorly filler. Speakerboxx/The Love Below is the same too I mean there's a lot of filler on that too.

Good Kid is storytelling perfection and despite having 1 overall cohesive narrative has some banging singles. That's amazing. That's timeless.

Fuck off Deliverance is a 9 behave yourself.

I LOVE Deliverance. One of the most underrated CDs of all time for sure. She Tried is an incredible track, and I love the country vibes running through it. I know that that style isn't to everyone's taste so I understand why it is relatively unloved, but I think it's a really great CD, easily in my top 20 of all time.

Also Black Album is majorly filler.
There were a couple of weak tracks - off the top of my head I didn't like the Em-produced Moment Of Clarity and Justify My Thug was poop, but most of the rest of it was really good without any real stand-out tracks. I wasn't a huge fan of 99 Problems or Change Clothes but in terms of lead singles to sell the album to the mainstream they were good. Lucifer, Dirt Off Your Shoulder, Encore, December 4th, PSA and What More Can I Say were bangers.

Speakerboxx/The Love Below is the same too I mean there's a lot of filler on that too.
In all honesty I agree with you and didn't think The Love Below was that great, but included it on that list because I felt like it was expansive and creative even if it didn't all work...I admit that there's an inconsistency there though, because I'm allowing for that CD to be considered great even though I didn't like it because of the critical reception it got, but not making the same allowance for Kendrick's CD.

Good Kid is storytelling perfection and despite having 1 overall cohesive narrative has some banging singles. That's amazing. That's timeless.

Also Run the Jewels was out last year. That was incredible

The narrative through GKMC is good but I just didn't get the love for what seemed quite pedestrian, almost dull tracks like Swimming Pools, Sing About Me and Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe...I just didn't get it at all. I finally got around to Run The Jewels earlier this year and it was just...nah. Wouldn't even describe it as ok.

As I've mentioned before though, I don't particularly like the fashion for the more electronic sounds in modern hip-hop (with a few exceptions - Full Retard by El-P is nuts) so a lot of newer stuff just isn't to my taste.

Twiztid on the other hand, they kill it consistently, Blaze I've never really liked anything by him since that very first EP he dropped. The EP was dope, everything since, subpar minus a handful of tracks. I hope the rest of the album is solid, not sure if I'll snatch it up, I only have the 1st 2 DL albums and they were OK.

Common is one of those low-key rappers that I absolutely love but would never think of when you ask me about my favourite rappers. Resurrection, Be, ODIAMS, Like Water For Chocolate and Finding Forever are all ace. Just checking out his discography prior to sending this post I just realised Resurrection isn't his debut, is Can I Borrow A Dollar? any good or is it one of those early joints like Infinite and Mobb Deep's debut that was an official LP but so little known that people tend to forget it?

Fellow Chicagoan (and the man who showed Chi-town's Kanye West his way around a mixing desk) No ID produces, and indeed the same distortion-is-king technique from Yeezus is all over Nobody's Smiling, with Common's verbose verses dovetailing nicely with productions that are at times more like techno than hip-hop.

Juggalos Brutally Maul Fellow Fan for Dissing ICP

A Maryland man says two of his roommates attacked him this week in an attempt to remove a tattoo on his arm with a knife and fire, all in the name of their higher power, Insane Clown Posse. He suffered a series of horrific injuries and has since had to have the egregiously damaged limb amputated below the elbow.

The victim, 31-year-old Zachary Swanson, apparently "disrespected" ICP in front of his fellow Juggalo roommates Paul Martin Hurst, 33, and Cary Lee Edwards, 35, on Monday morning in the tiny town of Hebron. At that point, the men fractured Swanson's nose and face, broke 11 of his ribs, lacerated his liver, and caused his brain to bleed. Hurst and Edwards now face charges that include attempted murder in the first degree, and they remain held without bond.

A local Maryland newspaper has more on the brutal nature of the crime, but the men used weapons like shovels and lighter fluid to try to punish Swanson for disrespecting Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope. Their focus, at least for some of the attack, was Swanson's ICP tattoo. The "burning was in an attempt to remove a tattoo that Edwards did not believe that Swanson earned," read the court papers charging the men.

The Insane Clown Posse and its followers are no strangers to controversy, of course, including an FBI decree that ICP fans can be legally classified as gang members, as well as a sexual harassment lawsuit from a former employee against "Dirty Dan" Diamond. For photos from the 2014 Gatheirng of the Juggalos, which included a wedding, check out SPIN's gallery. For photos of the accused, look no further:

After unveiling the single, "Guts Over Fear," last night and then subtly announcing the project's title, Eminem has formally announced that his upcoming Shady XV will be a double-disc effort that will indeed drop on Black Friday (November 28th). One dis will include some of Em's greatest hits spanning his illustrious career, while the other disc will be all-new music featuring himself as well as his Shady 2.0 signees - Slaughterhouse, Bad Meets Evil, D-12, and Yelawolf - throughout. Slim Shady fans, get excited in a couple months.

It probably won't be as good as The Re-Up.

Who said anything about Yeezus? BTI, to me, was very much influenced by MBDTF. And the bridge on Sober sounds like the bridge on Niggas in Paris.

Kanye is the greatest hip hop artist of this generation so it's not like following his style is a bad thing. I love Bino. But the influences are clear, especially with this particular song you posted. And if you like this song but don't show love for Hold On We're Going Home then you're being biased.

They must REALLY want "MAJIK" as their label name. I remember they tried to get that Majik Records to pop off but for unfortunate reasons it never came to fruition. Now they come with this lame attempt at making sure the juggalos know they're still alive with this lame ass record label title.
