Only about half way through Long.Live.ASAP but yeah String it is really fucking good. Too bad it leaked so early.

Switch out Yelawolf for Gambino and you would be correct.

Gambino would have sounded ridiculously out of place on a hard track like that though. Yela more or less delivers a solid verse and fits in well with those guys. And what a track it is.

Nah. And definitely less.

KRIT had the best verse.

Yelawolf's verse is great, fuck out of here. Aren't you a Shady dickrider anyway? What's a matter?

Honestly every single one of them kill it. Hell of a song.

December 19th, 2012, 1:36 AM
lol yep.

i'm clearly no stranger to getting into pissing contests on this forum, but holy fuck. i used to read this thread everyday, but the mind-numbing bullshit caught up. quietstorm can't post anything without somebody shitting on cannbis back at him, lawl bert likes gambino, simon pining for the good old days of hip hop, stringer catching shit for having the audacity to MERELY ENJOY less than critical acts like flocka. the mood of this thread can be tiring.

Bert
December 19th, 2012, 2:12 AM
I backed off on starting shit. But if other people start shit then yeah I'm gonna reply.

And I'm not the one telling people not to post particular artists. I don't care what people post.

Stringer Bell
December 20th, 2012, 3:22 AM
Where did I tell you not to post something? You're constantly shitting on my taste because I like guys like Gunplay, making up stories about how I like Gucci Mane. And I just find your lyric argument tired, that's all. As much as I love lyrical hiphop, it means less than ever in 2012 (well 2013 really). And that's unfortunate for sure but things progress and I love rap where it is. But I mean.. my favorite rapper of the moment is Danny Brown, and like him or not, I don't really think you can say he isn't lyrical. He held his own with all of those guys on 1 Train, arguably the best verse.

Here's a mix I made some people might like. Maybe not. But I think some of it sounds neat.. good winter shit. https://soundcloud.com/bornrare/mad-world-mix-1

Bert
December 20th, 2012, 1:24 PM
I never said you were. I just said that I don't tell people not to post anything. People have told me not to post Gambino tracks but I haven't listened, he just doesn't have anything new right now.

Danny Brown is cool, I loved his verse on Toxic and the Grown Up song he did, I just don't think he had the best verse on 1train and I've never understood the ASAP hype.

Really though I'm not trying to start shit. People can post what they want to post. I've tried in the past to post stuff I think people might like even if it's not really for me, I just want the thread to be active.

But if you diss something I post then yeah I'm going to say something. That's just how it is.

Ringo

Wasn't expecting much from this A$AP album. I'm not really a fan of his and if anything he seems to have gotten worse since breaking out but man I'm really enjoying this right now. 1train is obviously great (even Yelawolf's verse is up to standard - some people arguing it's the best of the bunch) and tracks like Phoenix and Hell stand out too. Yes the Skrillex track is pretty dreadful but I've swapped it with Ghetto Symphony. :)

Anyway, we should do EOY lists over the next couple of weeks. I've still got a bunch of albums and songs I haven't got around to listening to yet. There's so much stuff getting hype on EOY lists to wade through.

I actually fucks with the Skrillex track. It's pretty good, definitely better than some others like fashion killa. The album as a whole lost some steam for me after first listen and I'm not sure how much I'll be coming back to it long term, but it's still very good and would likely make my top 5 for 2012 if it were eligible. When does it come out again, August 2013? lol

I like how this beef with Meek Mill has brought Cassidy back on the scene. Meek really does rap the same on every song. Cass is straight ethering him.

It's weird cause if anything I'm finally getting into Meek Mill. Cassidy, to me, just reminds me of his "Hotel" single in high school and all that over-use of simile battle rap type stuff. Just my opinion, neither guy is a favorite.

CONGRATULATIONS to our own QuietStorm for his MARRIAGE (whoops! said engagement the first time). I know we usually keep our personal lives out of this thread (or maybe except for me in the past ) but it's pretty sweet. Congrats man

Also, not that anyone would really care, but I'd say these are my top 12 of 2012.. strictly my opinions..

12. Big K.R.I.T. - Live From The Underground (Seemed to be forgotten on a lot of end of year lists. An impressive debut, maybe not quite as gripping as some of his mixtapes but still an amazing album.)

11. The Alchemist - Russian Roulette (Vet producer keeps progressing and makes the album of his career. This had EVERY hot rapper on it.)

10. Schoolboy Q - Habits & Contradictions (Incredible album. Hurts me to place it this low.)

9. Action Bronson - Blue Chips (Honestly only this low because it's a mixtape. The most cohesive of Action Bronson's 2012 work, bangers from beginning to end.)

8. Aesop Rock - Skelethon (Even more impressive when you consider he produced every song as well. Can't deny this one, it might be my favorite album of his thus far.)

7. Killer Mike - R.A.P. Music (This guy and El-P had 2012 on lock. Some people would put this at #1. For me, the subject matter is a little heavy to say it's the best of the year, but it's definitely among them.)

6. Smoke DZA & Harry Fraud - Rugby Thompson (People slept on this heavy. Harry Fraud is one of the best producers out right now and this is a great example. Smoke DZA shows he can more than hold his own on a full length.)

5. Ab-Soul - Control System (TDE shit on everyone this year. Out of the Black Hippy guys, Soul is actually my favorite, and this is an amazing record that I feel like a ton of people overlooked. But I still can't place it above GKMC as an album.)

4. Nas - Life Is Good (Some people forgot about this one. Some people thought it was just the "old heads" hyping it up because they were glad to see a 90's guy come back. Nah, this is one of the year's best for sure.)

3. Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid, Maad City (True art. I really can't say anything about this one that other people haven't. I don't play individual songs as much these days, but as a full album this one is hard to match.)

2. Frank Ocean - Channel Orange (Pyramids alone could've got him in the top ten. Technically I guess it isn't hip-hop but it's hip-hop enough for me. I've played this more than anything this year. The songwriting here is some of the best we'll get for a long time to come.)

1. El-P - Cancer 4 Cure (If I could pick anything to be the sound of 2012, it's gotta be this. In your face, progressive as fuck. Futuristic rap without coming close to corny. I feel really bad for people who missed ..or don't 'get' this one. The best.)

I've been seeing O.C. & Apollo Brown – Trophies sitting on top of a lot of year end lists. Is it as good as people say?

Ringo
January 12th, 2013, 6:51 AM
It's really good. While it enjoyed a lot of praise when it surfaced, it kind of got left off a lot of publication year-end lists. Maybe because it's a rapper from another era. Unlike most of the big hip-hop records of 2012 like Kendrick I don't think anyone was really expecting anything notable from an O.C. release in 2012 so I think him returning to deliver a notable record is part of it's allure.

STILL loving Long Live A$AP. Even more so with the full quality release now out. Rocky is not a particularly good rapper but the production is all on point, just about everyone steps up for their guest appearances and it generally has the right balance between different types of songs that serve different purposes. Just a bunch of great tracks. Can't get "Fuckin' Problems" out of my head, it's the obvious single. Not a 2 Chainz fan but his contribution is perfect for this.

The T.I record also really grew on me. It's not anything special and I know a lot of people have never been into him but for those who ever have, this is him back on form.

Also, DJ Premier did his 2012 albums of the year list a few weeks back. A few interesting choices that I haven't heard. Happy to see that first Public Enemy record in his top 20 and "Trophies" getting his love. And he has an album he was involved in at #2. :D

Like every year DJ Premier presents to you his top 20 albums of a year, also in 2011 he did that. There’s always a big commotion around it but check out Premos top 20 of 2012:

Rank:

20. Torae – Off The Record
19. Saigon – Greatest Story Never Told Pt. 2: Breads And Circuses
18. Slaughterhouse – Welcome To Our House
17. Skyzoo – A Dream Deferred
16. Masta Ace & MF DOOM – MA_DOOM: Son Of Yvonne
15. Roc Marciano – Reloaded
14. 9th Wonder & Buckshot – The Solution
13. Public Enemy – Most Of My Heroes Still Don’t Appear On No Stamp
12. Vinnie Paz – Gods Of The Serengeti
11. Lil Fame & Termanology – Fizzyology

10. Rick Ross – God Forgives, I Don’t
09. Kendrick Lamar – good kid, m.A.A.d. city
08. Action Bronson & Alchemist – Rare Chandeliers
07. 9th Wonder & Murs – The Final Adventure
06. Sean Price – Mic Tyson
05. Wu-Block – Wu-Block
04. Showbiz & A.G. – Mugshot Music (Preloaded)
03. Nas – Life Is Good
02. DJ Premier & Bumpy Knuckles – Kolexxxion
01. O.C. & Apollo Brown – Trophies

Honorable Mentioning: Mayhem Lauren “Mandatory Brunch Meetings”, Fresh Vetz “The Tape Effect”, Killer Mike “R.A.P. Music”, Nutso “Behind These Bars”, Craig G. “Ramblings Of An Angry Old Man”, Big Shug “I.M.4Eva”, La Coka Nostra “Masters Of The Dark Arts”, Ice Water (aka WOADAH) “Holy Water”, Bishop Lamont “The Layover”, 1982 “2012″, Apollo Brown & Guilty Simpson “Dice Game”, Large Professor “Professor @ Large”.

Voila.

Closure Note From DJ Premier:

Just in case y’all forgot, I base my list on:

1) Beats selection
2) Lyrics and content that make sense
3) Flows and wordplay and your voice
4) I don’t care how many records you sold and how much your record was played on commercial radio, I live hip hop culture and I respect my pioneers that allowed me to do hip hop as a career
5) Concepts and overall body of making a full LP including the sequence of how your LP flows is so important when I pop it in my sound system

I still judge listening to music on either a boom box or driving in my ride, no iPods and shit. I stick to tradition of how hip hop was played when it made an impact on my life.

As I say every year, if you don’t like my list, fuck it make your own!

One note I will make: I meant to list the Game’s “Jesus Piece” in my list and it was an oversight so I won’t change this list because of my mistake. I still wanted to make a note of it being that I liked his album and I’m still bumpin it in the ride.

Let the hate begin…

Finally, we usually do this so... Anticipated for 2013 (some certain, others likely, many probably won't see the light of day):
- Top Dawg collab!
- Jay Rock solo
- Schoolboy Q - Oxymoron
- Ab Soul & JMSN - Unit 6
- A Wu-Tang album to mark the 20th anniversary of Enter The Wu?!
- Action Bronson & Harry Fraud teaming up again for Saab Stories.
- Danny Brown - Old
- Madlib & Freddie Gibbs - Cocaine Piñata. Maybe the one I'm looking forward to most if "Thuggin" is anything to go by.
- Madvillainy 2! :happysad:
- Future - Future Hendrix
- Earl - Doris
- Plenty more Curren$y as usual. Possibly "Pilot Talk III".
- Ghostface's Blue & Cream. And the Doom collab...
- Raekwon EP coming soon and possibly a full LP later in the year.
- GOOD Music - Cruel Winter. Should at least deliver a couple of big singles.
- Pusha T's GOOD solo debut, "My Name Is My Name".
- That Jay Electronica record. Finally. Probably not.
- J. Cole - Born Sinner. Could be a little less poppy given he's fully established now. Or even more.
- J. Cole/Kendrick collab.
- KRIT/Yelawolf collab.
- More from Joey Bada$$
- Azealia Banks debut.
- Talib Kweli - Prisoner Of Conscious.
- Gunplay - Medellin
- New Bun B
- New stuff from Wayne, Jay-Z, Em, Cudi, Big Sean, Drake, Tyler, Cappadonna and RAS KASS that I may or may not check out.

Forgot to post this. Since Joey Bada$$ is all about bringing back that mid 90s sound, a DJ Premier collaboration was inevitable at some point. Unsurprisingly I really like it.

I decided to quit Kottonmouth Kings. I was sick and tired of all the shit talking and back stabbing that goes on in the group. Lou and richter are still the same guys as they always were and I have nothing but love for them. The other guys in KMK treat lou and richter like shit and are always threatening to kick them out of the group. Bobby, DLOC, Dirtball and Brad turned into backstabbing assholes who treat everyone including our fans like shit. I have never seen people change and turn their backs on everything they have preached and stood for. They don't have anyone's back except their own. They are always treating each other and everyone like shit and I'm just over it. They preach family and unity and then treat me like shit and disrespect fans. The truth is they are all about the money and don't give a fuck about anything else. They turned their back on Pakelika and fucked him over. They have turned their back on all the people that have helped them over the years. From SRH and Sub Noize employees to other bands on the label. These guys have treated them like shit. And they turned their back on me. I put my heart and soul into building KMK. I worked as a crew member, built their sets, designed their clothes and helped with their merch and was happy to do it and still preform every night. I never got paid anything extra for any of it and got paid as a crew member. I didn't give a fuck about the money and did it all for the movement and the fans but they treated me like shit and were thankless dicks. I still believe in the movement, it's just not the same KMK that it was. The fans have been saying for years to get back to the roots, I wish that could have happened. I still believe in what KMK stood for at one time, but I'm not going to continue on with people who say one thing and do another.

I'd download a Lil B Instrumental album. Dude can't rap for shit but has some good beats.

I listened to Joey's response and it really wasn't that great. The only thing else I've heard from him was the BET Cypher but his response was weak.

Jesus, the only thing missing from that Budden album is a hook from Pink. I'm guessing it's a Shady release?

Been listening to the new Pusha T nonstop pretty much. So much incredible rapping, really good production too. A few of the hooks are pretty blah (French Montana and the Future clone) but it's real good other than that.

Lil B is one guy that no matter how much I hear, no matter how many chances I give him, I can't get into him. His flow is pretty much nonexistent and half the time he's not even close to rhyming. So nah, fuck him. Meanwhile, Joey Badass is probably in the top three "new" guys. He's so good for his age it's unreal.

New Emancipator album has some amazing beats. Not exactly hiphop, but close enough. It's all instrumental, check it out if you haven't heard them before.

Bert
January 31st, 2013, 3:28 PM
Judging an album by it's tracklist? He's not signed to Shady independently, none of them are. Just Slaughterhouse as a group.

At least we agree on Lil B. Fro told me I should listen to Joey Badass's 1999 so I downloaded it and I'll give it a listen sometime in the future.

Stringer Bell
February 3rd, 2013, 2:27 PM
Not judging the quality of music, just saying it looks like a major label release on paper. Omarion, Wayne, Kirko Bangz, Wiz Khalifa, and French Montana aren't really the kind of guys you'd expect to hear with Joe. Definitely seems like a try at more mainstream level success (similar to what Tech N9ne did recently), especially with the single. Not a bad thing, just an observation.

Joey Badass is definitely the rookie of the year for 2012, and he came damn close to MVP. The kid just turned 18 and he raps like he's in his 30s (in a good way). If you like lyrics, he's definitely one to check out. And Capital Steez was a beast, RIP.

The Underachievers are a duo signed to Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label, I saw them open for Danny Brown a couple months back. They're part of the Joey Badass Beast Coast movement, really good shit. Lots of weed and drug raps but that's not a bad thing: http://www.datpiff.com/The-Underachievers-Indigoism-mixtape.449545.html

Also, not exactly hip-hop, but I don't know where else to put it and this shit GOES. If you like trap or electronic at all, you'll dig this.

Bun B Names His Top Five Favorite Current Emcees

the Houston, Texas native began by picking Grime rapper Dizzee Rascal, who Bun says is sorely underrated.

"Dizzee Rascal, from the U.K., is probably one of the most underestimated emcees, period, on the planet. His technical skills are dare I say almost unmatched by any other emcee," he said.

He also named Yelawolf, with whom he collaborated for the cut "Good to Go." "Yelawolf I think is an incredible emcee. I think as we emcees say breath control, his ability to put together as many words as possible before he has to take another breath. It's something that not a lot of people can do, but he's learned how to construct songs based off of that breath control, which I think is extremely impressive."

Like his contemporary Nas, Bun picked Kendrick Lamar as one of his favorite current emcees, praising him for his raw skills and enthusiasm. "I'd probably have to say Kendrick Lamar. Having Dr. Dre as an overseer definitely helps, but he's very tenacious. He's very raw and he's hype all the time. He's very excited to be rapping at any given moment.

"Number four, probably Royce Da 5'9," he continued. "Probably the most underrated lyricist in the game right now. I think his catalog, when you go back and look at it verse-for-verse, it's going to be really hard for any emcee to really stand up against. Number five is me. I just had to go there."

Interesting. I've never listened to Dizzee Rascal.

Absolutely stunning, he played 3 tracks off his new Lp also which sounded great. Joey badass and action bronson certainly featured on these tracks as well.

Going tonight :hyper: what sort of set was it? Mainly Premo tracks?

MikeHunt

Baller.

Joey Badass is a fucking beast btw, pisses all over Kendrick.

I love Joey but that's a stretch. You could say in terms of pure lyricism Joey is his equal or maybe even his superior (although I wouldn't) but Kendrick is definitely leagues ahead of him in terms of storytelling and structuring real songs that relate a particular concept. Joey has the bars but he doesn't have anything that equals something like No Make Up or Keisha's Song let alone the entire concept album of GKMC. At least not yet. Needless to say my expectations for Joey's debut album are high. And the kid just turned 18 ffs.

String I just downloaded CZARFACE. I'm sure it'll be right up my alley.

Simon
March 12th, 2013, 12:47 PM
As I've mentioned before, I don't get the hype with Kendrick - I like a number of his tracks and the GKMC grew on me slightly, without ever seeing where the outpouring of love was coming from...but the Badass album is fucking nuts. Don't read too much into this comparison as I'm certainly not saying it's as good, but there is a rawness and a hunger about him on 1992 that reminds me of Illmatic. Capital Steez (who got an awesome shoutout from Premo and Statik Selektah at the concert last week) had incredible potential as well, his death was a real shame.

I've got right back into hip-hop recently in a massive way, so much great stuff on both sides of the pond. UKHH is fucking buzzing at the moment, Bandcamp has really opened things up with huge numbers of talented artists getting their music out to a wide audience, this is as strong as I can ever remember the scene being. Will post up a few tracks later.

Just d/led it. I like that start so far. Tyler's always great at making beats, so even if I don't care about the lyrics, I know the sounds will be more than solid. This album has a lot of instrumentals, doesn't it?

MikeHunt

Psycho666Soldier
March 27th, 2013, 4:36 AM
Don't know why I thought a portion of the album was supposed to be instrumentals. Probably due to Tyler's proclamation that he was more into making beats than rapping when he was talking about this album. Maybe that just meant he was only focused on the beats before he worried about lyrics or something. Regardless, this album's pretty good so far. Tight beats, a more mature lyrical approach, with a lot less of the shock factor. I liked the shocking shit, but it does kind of lose it's luster through a whole album.

Been going through that new Tyler, The Creator album a few times. It really does feel like he's matured a lot, but the abundance of love-themed songs is a bit off-putting for me. Outside of those few tracks, I really love this album. The lyrics are creative as usual, and it still sounds like Tyler while feeling evolved. I just wish it was more consistent with the parts of the album I really like.

Czarface was pretty awesome from the one listen I gave it. I was listening to it while going to sleep, so I didn't catch the whole thing, and didn't get to focus because I was tired that night. I'll be checking it out a lot more, though.

April 2, 2013 1:00 PM ET

"I'm the rock & roll nigger," Tech N9ne tells Rolling Stone. After working with the Deftones for the song "If I Could" on 2011's All 6s and 7s, the Kansas City, Missouri rapper is taking another step towards cementing that status on his forthcoming Something Else.

"One of the members of a big, humongous rock band did a song with me," he told us when we visited with him backstage at Paid Dues Independent Hip-Hop Festival in San Bernardino. After debating whether he should spill the beans, he revealed that it is System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian, who appears on the opening track to Something Else.

As a huge fan, Tech reached out to Tankian. "I think he is fucking insane lyrically, musically, spiritually . . . Totally cluster-fuck-ish like myself – you never know what's going to happen in the music," he said. "If you talk to Serj, he'll probably tell you he knew nothing about Tech N9ne until the song was sent to him, and after listening to it he went and got all my music, and it makes him run faster on the treadmill."

Tankian confirmed Tech's story. "I had not heard of Tech N9ne when we were sent the track," he said. "I checked out a bunch of his songs and really got into his flow, intensity and dynamics, and I agreed to sing on it," Tankian told Rolling Stone. "Originality in hip-hop and rock are hard to come by."

Now that the two have formed a mutual admiration society, Tech has high hopes for the future of the track. "The song's gonna be big. I would love to shoot a video," he said.

Tankian isn't the only big-name guest on Something Else. "I worked with people who I deemed incredible musically, lyrically," said Tech. "Cee Lo came through and did a chorus for me on a song called 'That's My Kid,' with Big Krit and Game. It's about our kids coming up, not following our negative footsteps. They latched onto other things that are positive. And now we're going to graduation saying, 'That's my kid right there,' instead of seeing them disappear in the night air."

With the record not quite done there are a few features up in the air, including one Tech wanted to go to Corey Taylor, who was not available timing-wise. He has other rockers in mind. "I might send it to James Hetfield," he said. "I heard he was a fan. I heard they [Metallica] warm up to my song 'Einstein.'"

Tech has a couple of objectives in mind. One is to bring his collaborators into his world: "Something Else is supposed to be something else – I'm taking different artists out of their element, putting them in a strange land."

The other goal is to let mainstream fans know just who Tech N9ne is. "This album is gonna show everybody that I'm here to stay and I'm not a fluke," he said. Given his consistent appeal as a live draw and seven straight albums charting in the top 10 of the Billboard Rap charts, that he feels underappreciated is surprising.

"Of the people who watch television and listen to the radio all the time, a lot of them don't know," he said, "because we're not on the radio or videos like that, in a heavy rotation like a 2 Chainz or Lil Wayne. But we pop up in those circles because real shit always shines."

And he expects fans who aren't aware that Tech has SoundScanned over a million albums to pay attention this summer. "Something Else is gonna be one of those ones that people are gonna say, 'Whoa,'" he said. "Just the features I told you are huge. They're gonna all vouch for me. I'm real – everybody does it out of respect."

I know we have some Combat Jack fans on here. The recent episode with Dame Dash where he and Just Blaze bicker back and forth about the Rocafella days is pretty great.

I feel like lots of hip hop stuff dropped yesterday. New Jay-Z and Pusha T singles are pretty good. Wu announced another album "A Better Tomorrow". And the White House fielded questions about Jay's Obama lyrics lol.

So any thoughts on Indicud?

My favorite studio Cudi by far. Not quite at mixtape levels yet but really enjoying it.

Pleasantly surprised by his production. I was worried it would be a car crash but he's done well. I could see him doing some production for others now because he has shown a real ability to let other people shine. He's taken a step back on most songs (not progression wise but letting others take the lead). The song with RZA is one of my favorites this year.

Too Shorts verse on girls is one of the worst things I've ever heard though.

Assuming he'll attempt to sign up Chip to a new label if he takes that expected path.

I'm really not a big ASAP fan but I love that started from the pavement line. And RZA is just crazy. He makes rapping seem easy.

I've been listening to Indicud a lot along with Ritz's album which I'm actually surprised to say I really like. I wasn't expecting to, I just downloaded it because I give all Strange Music artists a chance.

Sorry I just realised I wrote magazine, what the fuck. It's a website not a magazine, although it is connected to 16 Bars magazine which I think has stopped now.

Socovibe is a website as well (think it may have a phsyical print copy) normally looking for contributions as well.

It's a US thing so maybe a slant on the UK scene might interest them if you had any desire.

First post in a while, hope you guys don't mind.

Has anyone downloaded Chance The Rapper's new mixtape, Acid Rap? I've listened to it a few times and I think it's great. Such a great tape to listen to when you want to chill out. Cocoa Butter Kisses, Favourite Song and Smoke Again are probably my favourites, but I don't think anything is bad.

You can download it from here - http://chanceraps.com/

People posting in the hip hop thread is always a good thing.

I downloaded it but haven't had a chance to listen to anything but Favorite Song (because I"m a Gambino mark and had to hear it) but I'll probably listen to the rest of it tonight after I get off work.

I saw him live when he opened for CG and I was kind of underwhelmed but after hearing this song I started to take interest in him:
