Can't wait for the new Sean Price album.
Love this Joell Ortiz song - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzG-6ArwuMc (still won't let me embed links)... better than most of the Slaughterhouse album/mixtape tracks in my opinion

Someone please explain to me the Jadakiss conundrum. How can someone with such a great record of going hardest on basically every major collabo remix he appears on have such a shit back catalogue of solo work? His guest verses are invariably unbelievable but his three albums are meeeeeh at best. He was onto something with his line on the Made You Look remix, "top five dead or alive, if you ignore his LPs".

Yeah that's pretty much the book on him but his albums do have some amazing gems such as:
None of Y'all Betta
Show Discipline (ft. Nas)
We Gonna Make It (personal favorite)
Shoot Outs
Welcome to D-Block (ft. Eminem)
Kiss of Death

Yeah he has the odd classic (I love the original and remix of Why, and The Champ Is Here purely for the insane beat) but so, so much filler. It's infuriating.

Always felt the same about Busta Rhymes. He can hang with the best of 'em with his features, but his own music always felt as if he's desperately trying to find some mainstream trend he could hop on and make easy money off.

That's how I've felt about Snoop Dogg since Doggystyle. And it's what I really hate about Fat Joe. But Snoop Dogg is someone who really did kind of give up after Tupac died, and whatever was hot at the time: No Limit, ICP (not exactly HOT but still a strange as fuck collab), Dr. Dre's return, Neptunes, dude even tried to give up smokin weed when it was apparently the cool thing for rappers to do lol. I still love him, but when he's on a song about being young, wild, and free and dude is coaching pee-wee football and 40, idk.
Jadakiss though, dude is just one of those lyrical monsters who never had the look or presence to be a bigger star, which is cool, but unfortunate for his skill level. It's tough to stand out in a genre of hip hop that is super oversaturated.

I've been revisiting some of my older hip-hop recently and I was surprised how many of Snoop's older tracks have really stood the test of time. Ones that I would think nothing of skipping through when my mp3 player is on random, but if I actually listen to them they are great. Gz And Hustlaz especially, brilliant stuff.
I read something the other day that showed the top ten selling hip-hop artists of all time. No Nas. I was really surprised, I kind of assumed that being such a well-respected artist in such a popular genre would mean he was up there...I'm sure he just missed out, but he was beneath Outkast for example who I don't think of as having crossed over THAT much beyond Hey Ya and Ms. Jackson.

Outkast has never failed with a release, everything they've put out since southernplayalistic has sold extremely well, and everything they put out since "Ms. Jackson" has basically been treated as royalty. Nas just never really had the mainstream appeal going for him, he never really wrote or put out tracks that were extremely commercial. I mean, think about all of his hits, you probably will kick my dick off for saying this but none of them are really mega hits that someone who doesn't really listen to rap, or Nas in general, would even know. One Mic is for some reason the first track I always think of when I think of Nas, probably my favorite track of his, but again, compare that to what acts like Jay-Z, Eminem, Outkast, Lil Wayne, Dr. Dre, etc. have done it's not that much of a surprise. I'd be way more surprised if he was in the top 10, let alone top 20, just considering how much of a gap there is between his work and how little radio play and video play he's got over the last 2 decades.
Simon
September 27th, 2012, 11:39 AM
Yeah I guess you are right, the only real crossover hit I remember is "I Can" (also one of his most tedious...don't think he was cut out for commercial, just look at "You Owe Me"). I suppose when you think about it, it DOES make sense...to a hip-hop fan, there is little to choose between Nas and the likes of Jay-Z, Eminem etc, they would all be in the same bracket...but to the casual fan, the others have been releasing smash hits for years whereas Nas is someone better known as Kelis' ex-husband. Nas occupies a weird middle ground where he's established as one of the best ever despite neither being an underground hero nor a true world star, which is where the greats tend to lie. The greats that get a bit of exposure tend to become huge, and it never really happened to Nas, presumably for the reason you mentioned, that he just hasn't really gone for it with a major commercial release. I wonder whether I Can was an attempt at that which didn't quite manage to give him that push - a recognisable, accessible beat and fairly generic lyrics about positivity and change.
Welcome by the way

I Can did come across as like that artist/band trying to do that one big commerical track to secure their kids' college fund future or something. It's hard in this day and age, where rap skill is literally irrelevant and the big money makers that have sprouted over the last 5-6 years are garbage acts force-fed to the masses. The mainstream rap scene is why the UNDERGROUND rap scene is so strong and has grown stronger over the last decade. Thanks to MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, iTunes, bandcamp, and other outlets, artists are finding that they don't major labels for really anything so there's no need to try and make some bubblegum bullshit just to pay your rent every month.

You guys are acting like Nas doesn't have 3 multi-platinum albums, 5 single platinum and 3 gold. And he did go for it commercially with I Am (Hate Me Now ft Puff Daddy plus about a third of the track list) and Nastradamus (I remember him debuting the 3-D music video on TRL). When he got backlash for that shit and only moderate commercial success he went back to giving less of a fuck about singles.

Psychopathic Records’ horror-rap duo Twiztid are preparing to release their new album, Abominationz on October 22.
According to Psychopathic, “The horror-core rap group went deep within their morbid imaginations to conjure up the dark visions that shaped the nefarious and loathsome themes of the new album. The definition of “abomination” is, simply, “hate”, and Twiztid really does portray that overall feeling in their storytelling lyrics. And the music that encases these vile verses and lyrical nightmares is so addictive that listeners won’t want to turn it off. With songs titled “Blood…All I Need”, “Nightmarez”, “Coin Flip Lunatic (featuring Royce Da 5’9)”, and “Bad Side”, which is the first single off of the album, the expected, atrocious nature of the Demented Duo seems to come full circle on Abominationz.”
In addition, fans can look forward to double the bonus tracks and double the artwork. “There are two versions of Twiztid’s sick masterpiece – the “Monoxide” and “Madrox” – which means double bonus tracks and double album covers. Every album, regardless of version, has sixteen of the same tracks, but the bonus track on each version will be different and correspond to its respective cover. The “Madrox” includes a Madrox-only bonus track and Madrox cover, and the same deal goes for the “Monoxide” as it will include a Monoxide-only bonus track and Monoxide cover.”

Damning evidence has surfaced in the investigation of Gunplay's armed robbery and assault charges.
The video footage shows a man who appears to be Gunplay in a meeting with another man who is allegedly his accountant.
After discussing some matters, the man purported to be Gunplay pulls out a pistol, and eventually takes a gold chain from the accountant.
The rapper's attorney states that Gunplay could face life in prison if convicted on both counts.

While the final final numbers* won’t be in til tomorrow, HDD is reporting that Macklemore and Ryan Lewis sold 74k copies of The Heist and are taking the #2 spot on Billboard this week. Being up against a tough act to beat in Mumford & Sons (whose album Babel is super dope as well), the Seattle duo should be damn proud of their placement. Remember, these guys are doing it on their own w/ no major backing. Something that is always great to see. Congrats fellas, y’all deserve it.
Oh and speaking of major label debuts, Machine Gun Kelly took the 4th spot with 50k in sales for Lace Up.

A good read while listening to the album, interpreting the narrative, stolen from another forum:
Good Kid, M.A.A.D City: A Short Film by Kendrick Lamar
Setting: Compton
Characters:
Kendrick Lamar (present Kendrick)
K.Dot (young Kendrick)
Sherane
Kendrick's Mother
Kendrick's Father
Dave
Dave's brother
Keisha's sister
Demetrius (Sherane's favourite cousin)
The Two Brothers (Sherane's younger brothers)
Granny (Sherane's Granny who she lives with)
Sherane's Mother (a crack addict)
Uncle Tony (Kendrick's Uncle who was killed)
Joey (either childhood friend of Kendrick or cousin)
L, Boog, Yaya, Lucky (friends/family members of Kendrick when he was 9)
The Story:
Sherane aka Master Splinter's Daughter
The story opens as a flash-forward. K.Dot has known Sherane for a number of months by this point. He met her at a party where they flirted and exchanged numbers. They kept in contact with each other over the summer and got to know each other pretty well, he talks about her family's history of gang-banging that made him wary but didn't stop him from hooking up with her.
At the end of this song K.Dot is driving to Sherane's house in his Mother's van, he has sex on the brain. But when he turns up Sherane is outside waiting with two dudes in black hoodies (possibly her two younger brothers, or her cousins, one of which could be Demetrius).
Skit #1 - as K.Dot pulls up at Sherane's house his Mother tries to call him but instead gets his voice-mail. We learn from his Mother that K.Dot said he was borrowing her van for just 15 minutes. She warns him not to mess with “them hoodrats” especially “Sherane”.
****, Don't Kill My Vibe
The content of this song doesn't actually follow the Sherane narrative. It is a song told from the perspective of Kendrick Lamar the rapper and how as he gradually gets more recognition as an artist he sees people around him changing, "I can feel the new people around me just want to be famous." He also talks about trying to maintain his credibility while becoming a more mainstream artist, "I'm trying to keep it alive and not compromise the feeling we love/You trying to keep it deprived and only co-sign what radio does."
Skit #2 – The narrative begins. K.Dot's homies pick him up in their white Toyota with a pack of blacks and a beat CD.
Backseat Freestyle
The most self-explantory song on the album. Young K.Dot cruising around town with his homies, getting high and dropping freestyles in the backseat. This is a life is good moment, living free, no troubles. The calm before the storm.
The Art of Peer Pressure
The narrative begins to build. The pressures of hanging with the homies becomes more than simply having a laugh and freestyling. The usually drug free and sober K.Dot is brought in to a world of drinking, smoking, and violence when with “the homies”. Cruising around in a white Toyota, hitting up girls, jumping dudes wearing rival colours, and bragging about what they just did.
The stakes are upped when K.Dot and his homies rob a house that they had been stalking for two months. Cops pursue them but lose them.
Skit #3 - The homies talk about dropping K.Dot off back at home, so he can take his Mother's van and go hit up Sherane – and then they can all meet back up later on the block.
Money Trees
K.Dot recaps the story so far.
He talks about robbing the house, "Home invasion was persuasive/From 9 to 5 I know its vacant."
He mentions ****ing Sherane and bragging about it to his homies, "I ****ed Sherane then went to tell my bros."
He references Backseat Freestyle when he talks about rhyming to beats, "Parked the car and then we started rhyming, ya bish/The only thing we had to free our mind."
And he talks about jumping dudes who looked like they had more money than them, "Then freeze that verse when we see dollar signs/You looking like an easy come up ya bish/A silver spoon I know you come from ya bish."
The line in the chorus "Everybody gon' respect the shooter/But the one in front of the gun lives forever." is deeply important, not just as a life motto, but in regards to the events that later take place in this story regarding Dave and his brother. It's also a reference to Kendrick's Uncle Tony, who was shot and killed at Louie's Burgers; this event is a snap back to reality from the "dreams of living life like rappers do."
Skit #4– K.Dot's Mother leaves another voice-mail. She wants her car back.
Poetic Justice
K.Dot has been dropped off back at home by his homies and is about to go see Sherane. He's probably driving on the way there in his Mother's van. He talks about her and their relationship so far - it appears they may have had some arguments, he talks about her meeting up with her girlfriends to curse him, and going out partying rather than talking with him.
Skit #5 – this is when we catch up with Sherane aka Master Splinter's Daughter. It starts where Sherane ended, and you can tell because that haunting female vocal (used in the beat to Sherane) comes back in this skit. The two dudes with Sherane approach K.Dot and ask him where he and his family are from (trying to work out what gang he is affiliated with). They force K.Dot out of the van and jump him.
Good Kid
This really sets off the theme of the second half of the album and it is all to do with - realisation.
K.Dot talks about getting jumped, "For the record I recognize that I'm easy prey/I got ate alive yesterday."
He discusses the negative effects of gang-culture, and being unable to escape the pressure of people wanting to know what gang he represents, "But what am I supposed to do/When the topic is red or blue/And you understand that I ain't/But know I'm accustomed to." Red or Blue obviously refers to the LA gangs of Bloods and Crips.
The red and the blue in the second verse become police sirens. K.Dot talks about getting no sympathy from the cops because they stereotype him as a gang-banger, making him lift up his shirt in order to look for a gang affiliated tattoo, "I heard them chatter: "He's probably young but I know that he's down"/Step on his neck as hard as your bullet proof vest."
K.Dot is trapped in a violent culture and can't get a reprieve from the gangs or the police.
M.A.A.D City
More self-awareness and realisation of the corrupt city that K.Dot lives in.
K.Dot's recent beat-down brings back early memories of similar situations, witnessing someone with their brains blown out at a burger stand back when he was 9 (I'm not sure if he is talking about his Uncle Tony again, or someone else), he thinks he knows the person who did it but he censors his name. He also talks about how his cousin was killed back in 94.
He talks about his Father telling him to get a job but he got fired after his friends pressured him in to staging a robbery. He gives his reason for why he doesn't smoke when he tells a story of smoking marijuana laced with cocaine and "foaming at the mouth."
In the final verse he tries to let the good shine through and offer respite for the youth and how they don't have to succumb to the temptations and pressures of the street. He hopes that his experience and intelligence can do good for the youth living in similar situations. "Compton, USA Made me an Angel on Angel Dust."
Skit #6 – K.Dot's homies meet back up with him later as planned. They try to boost him back up after his beat-down, and they offer him alcohol to take his mind off it.
Swimming Pools
An anti-alcohol song, that again plays in to the second half of the album's realisation about the vices previously holding Kendrick back. Kedrick talks about growing up around alcohol both within his family and group of friends.
Skit #7 – this is the big impact moment of the narrative. The plan is to take revenge on the dudes that jumped K.Dot. One of K.Dot's homies (possibly Dave) talks about maybe dropping K.Dot back off at home, but this idea is turned down, and K.Dot stays. The homies see the dudes that jumped K.Dot and a shoot-out begins. During the battle K.Dot's friend Dave gets shot. The dudes that shot Dave drive off and K.Dot is left holding Dave as he dies in his arms.
Sing About Me
Verse 1 – from the perspective of Dave's brother. He says the blood is on Kendrick's hands because the whole situation happened out of revenge for something that happened to Kendrick. But he says he appreciates that Kendrick was there for his brother and held him while he was dying. Dave's brother wonders if he will ever discover a passion like Kendrick to get him out of the hood – he says he hopes Kendrick will remember him and sing about him when he makes it big, and if he dies before the album drops...pop, pop, pop – he gets killed.
Verse 2 – from the perspective of Keisha's sister. She is mad at Kendrick for putting her sister on blast (on Section 80) without even knowing her properly. She talks about how she is living the same life as her sister, as a prostitute, and is proud of her living and what she does. She claims not to be just another woman lost in the system. She says her sister died in vein. Unlike Dave's brother she doesn't want to be sang about on the album. She feels great and says she'll never fade away....but then she does, her vocals slowly fade out in to obscurity...perhaps she died or just became another nameless "hoodrat".
Verse 3 – from Kendrick's perspective. Looking in the mirror. His fear of death. He speaks to Dave's brother, agreeing that Dave was like a brother to him. He speaks to Keisha's sister saying that Keisha's story was the one that drove him to write something that powerful and real – he didn't mean to offend. He talks of how music saved him and pulled him away from the drugs, money and guns.
Skit #8 – K.Dot's homies talking after Dave has been killed. Some of them want to go back and get revenge. K.Dot finally snaps and says he is tired of this ****.
I'm Dying of Thirst
Kendrick talks about been tired of running and gunning people down. It's just a circle of death. The perpetual struggle.
Skit #9 – K.Dot returns home, still angry and upset over Dave's death. Him or one of his homies have a gun with them that his Mother sees “That better not be what I think it is.” she says. She tells them that they are dying of thirst and that they need to take a new path and let Jesus in to their lives. She makes them prayer. From here on K.Dot begins to live a new life as Kendrick Lamar.
Real
This is Kendrick disregarding the street life and turning his back on gang-banging, drugs, alcohol, violence etc. The different meanings of being “real”. Are you real because you represent your hood and shoot people? Are you real because you try to escape that life and make something of yourself?
Verse 1 – about certain girls (but could be Sherane). She loves handbags, French Tip, bank slips. But what love got to do with it when you don't love yourself?
Verse 2 – about certain homies (but could be Dave's brother). He loves fast cars, fast women, beef, streets, ducking police, hood-life. But what love got to do with it when you don't love yourself?
Verse 3 – about Kendrick. He explains the previous two verses - “I love first verse cos your the girl I attract.” and “I love second verse cos your the homie that packed burner.” “I love what the both of you have to offer.”
He wonders if he should hate her for what happened or should he hate his homies for convincing him to seek revenge. Or should he hate the fact that none of that **** makes him real.
Skit #10 – voice-mail from his Father. He tells Kendrick not to make the same mistakes he did, and that none of this stuff makes him real and that he should get out and make something of himself. His Mother tells him that Top Dawg called and wants him in the studio – she tells him to take his music career seriously – that it is his chance to get out and tell his story to the kids of Compton so that they have hope. This is technically the end of the story in a narrative sense - the tape is ejected and then rewound.
Compton
The narrative is over. This song is after Kendrick has made it and is now giving back just like his Mother told him too. It's a positive outlook of a city that is often full of darkness and violence.
Skit #11 - the narrative starts over again when K.Dot borrows his Mother's van.

I'm just not sold on Mackelmore. I appreciate the fact he's doing something different and trying to get people to think, but so much of his stuff comes off as overly preachy. Like, the Wing$ song.. Okay, I get it, materialism is a bad thing and Nike has a ton of people brainwashed. But, you wear Nikes on a regular basis... in fact, you were on the most recent XXL Freshmen cover, in a pair of Jordan 3s. So what's your message? You want to stop being a consumer but you don't have enough self control?
The album isn't bad, but it's basically pop rap. I'm not totally impressed with the guy as a lyricist and some of the songs are just flatout corny. I do really like White Walls with Schoolboy Q, but even that sounds like it was tailor made for radio.
Kendrick's album is fucking incredible. A true artist. That explanation you posted is pretty awesome, Fro. Also, Black Hippy remixes of The Recipe and Swimming Pools hit the net today.
The Man with the Iron Fists soundtrack is ridiculous, one of the year's best. Nice to hear the Wu together again and some of the collaborations are incredible. This is probably my favorite..

I'm gonna be honest, I haven't given that JJ DOOM a fair listen. I read some lukewarm reactions to it, and my buddy who is a diehard DOOM fan said he sounded kinda lazy and that there wasn't enough of him actually rapping. But, like you guys said, gotta check for anything from him, so I'll get around to it eventually.
I think GKMC and Section.80 are really hard to compare. Not saying I disagree, but they are so different I think it's hard to compare them personally. I kind of like the straight-forward, direct feeling on Section.80, but as an overall piece of work/art, the new record is definitely in another world. It's like he's channeling the best guys of the past 20 or so years. You can hear a ton of 90's west coast influence on the record, a ton of E-40 references, storytelling that is on a Slick Rick level, just straight up hard spitting which is getting him the Illmatic comparisons, there's the Andre 3000 vibe all throughout the album. Really just a fantastic record. It really reminds me of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy really, that's the last record I can think of that was so well put together sonically and conceptually.
Also I'm really digging Freddie Gibbs lately. I know he's nothing new really but his flows are fucking insane. Dude would have been right at home in the 90s. His newest, Baby Face Killa, is great, as is pretty much all of his stuff. The Lord Giveth, Lord Taketh Away EP with Statik Selektah is really dope, they made it in 24 hours and the creation of it was actually streamed online.

Brilliant storytelling and just such an incredible vibe. Production is flawless. Been grinding it pretty hard since getting it. Fucking brilliant.
Section 80 is so different it's hard to compare. I think 80 has more attention grabbing songs and you could take 4-5 of them out and say bang thats a time capsule of incredible music but gkmc is one whole piece. As an album gkmc is stronger as a conceptual piece but it's hard to deny those bangers on 80.

GKMC, RAP and LIG are the clear hip-hop top 3 for the year but I'm not sure in which order yet. That's probably the boring consensus view but they're all really good records that generally don't make any missteps (might be one or two exceptions) and in the case of good kid and life is good, they are pretty fucking DEEP narratively and lyrically.
That Gibbs mixtape is also very good, unsurprisingly.

Kendrick is on pace to sell over 200k in his first week which is pretty freaking incredible with little in the way of commercial singles. I didn't think hip hop heads had it in them. This is potentially a significant turning point for the genre away from all the bullshit that's been dominating the charts. At least to some small extent.

I mentioned a few Kendrick songs I liked just a couple of weeks ago - Hi Power, Poe Man's Dreams and Keisha's Song in particular. Hopsin as well, I like a lot of his stuff. Lunar C. Odd Future. A few tracks off of the Slaughterhouse album. Brotherman. That Angel Haze track that everyone was going nuts over for a while. K Koke. La Coka Nostra. I'm pretty sure I mentioned a few brainless hype tracks by Meek Mill, Rick Ross, Mac Miller etc that are good for what they are. The new 50 and Noreaga tracks. The new Xzibit album as well, 'Stand Tall' in particular. I have mentioned quite a lot of these on here. That is from the past couple of months alone.
Basically you are talking bollocks. I dislike a lot of new stuff but also like a lot of new stuff...just you lot only seem to talk about the stuff I dislike, for the most part. The stuff I like, I always make a point of posting Youtube links to.

The main vibe you give out here in this thread is that of someone pining for the old days and in particular someone who dislikes things which are popular. I'm glad you can find solace in Xzibit.
I do pine for the old days, and rightly so because there was more good hip-hop around, particularly commercially. I don't think the other comment is valid at all, I like whatever is good and have always supported GOOD music regardless of how popular it is. Why is it so difficult to understand the idea that I just don't like a lot of modern rappers for legitimate reasons rather than due to some kind of posturing, and why are you pushing this weird idea that my love of hip-hop is in some way illegitimate at its origin?
I've tried to explain before why I think I'm down about a lot of modern hip-hop - it comes down to the production. The styles that have gone in and out of fashion over the past few years I have tended not to like, and for me production is as important as lyrics. So if a lot of modern hip-hop is conforming to a particular style, and I don't like that particular style, then it stands to reason that I won't like a lot of modern hip-hop. For example the new Kendrick album has been praised for its 90s west coast influences, and that is a style I have never been big on - the main reason I was never that big on The Chronic for example, as good as it is.
It's a bit snide to try and make out like my reasons for liking and disliking certain styles come with ulterior motives really.

Cool beats, but they give the vibe of something I'd hear from an artist who gets more exposure that I don't like. Are you retarded son? It's more that I have my specific tastes and over the years I've grown to accept more styles of rap than just the super lyrical, always has to blow your mind type of stuff that I used to favor. And to say these guys are all I like? My favorite albums this year are from guys like Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q, Nas, Kendrick Lamar, El-P, Killer Mike, Action Bronson, Smoke DZA, Aesop Rock, Childish Gambino, and Meyhem Lauren. Some real shit turds in there if you ask me.
I don't think you'll find a single post where I've ever said I liked Gucci Mane. You'll probably find a handful where I've said Waka has his time and place and is great party music, though.
I do enjoy Gunplay. I think he's got an insane amount of charisma and the way he strings his flows together is pretty impressive. At first, I wrote him off as shit without giving him a chance, mostly since he was part of Rick Ross' (who at the time wasn't in the zone he has been lately) weed carrier crew. The more I heard of the guy the more I liked, and between his mixtapes and verses like this he's really been one of the most entertaining guys this year. Not everyone is gonna see it that way of course, but to call him a bad rapper? But Lil Wayne, the same guy who made Rebirth, is your favorite? Seriously...

Its the internet. People are too hip for that.
Oh yeah, I've listened to the full Kendrick album now. Awesome material. Very innovative while reminiscent of the 90's beat-wise, and as always, creative and poignant on the lyrics. I'm still not a fan of the first half of m.A.A.d. City, and the track with Drake turns me off once he starts rapping, and I probably wouldn't play Real on its own too often, but as a whole...it really is a work of art, and I feel that's very important when most tracks are highly enjoyable.
Bought it a few days ago after taking my first full listen-through. I've listened to it probably 2 or 3 times since as a whole.

The verses might not bang like Kendrick on his sharpest flow but I think they're still good and the hook is great. The thing I love about the song is the concept. To me it's about Kendrick as a kid with all this fucked up hood shit going on around him while he's trying to just watch cartoons and eat cereal and not get sucked into it like his father.

Went back to Kendrick's album. It's better than I first thought, but nowhere near the masterpiece people are claiming. He deserves credit for his ambition, and indeed for making a concept album that isn't completely dreadful, but I'm counting about four really good tracks on the whole album, and two of them are bonus material FFS (Black Boy Fly is hands down the best track IMO). Some of the comments I've heard about it just leave me completely cold, like they are for a different version of the album to the one I listened to. The two title tracks at the centre of the album are being held up as modern classics, and Swimming Pool is apparently as good as commercial-driven hip-hop gets...I just don't see it :\

I actually think that Kendrick makes gunplay come alive in that song. In a weird way he holds him up to be everything he doesn't want to be or get in to. It's the life he got away from and never wants back but it doesn't feel like he's thrown him under the bus. It's mad. I think it has a raw power to it as a song.

See, I didn't even care for the bonus tracks much. I've been listening to the standard version, since I feel the bonus tracks weren't important. Sherane, Btich, Don't Kill My Vibe, Money Trees, Art of Peer Pressure, Compton, Sing About Me/Dying of Thirst....those are all great tracks. I can't really agree that there are only four really good tracks on the album. However, I can agree it's not quite as great as everyone's making it out to be.
Still, I think it's the best major label release I've heard this year, and probably of the last few years. He has an excellent flow and lyrical style. He has a penchant for rapping over phat-ass beats. To me, he is indeed one of the modern greats, but that doesn't make Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City flawless.
Also, Swimming Pool is a REALLY good commercially-driven Hip-Hop song, but I don't know I'd say it's as "good as it gets."

See now I would say that not only is Swimming Pools not particularly good, it's not particularly commercial either...this is what I mean when I say I feel like I'm hearing a different album to everyone else. It's a dark, brooding beat, not something I would expect to hear on music channels. Compton is an obvious radio banger, clearly designed to be so, but I don't get that with Swimming Pools at all.

I wasn't originally a big fan of Swimming Pools, but the feeling and emotion behind it grabs me, so I dig the track. It's not one of my favorites on the album, though. I suppose Swimming Pools isn't much more commercial than some of the songs on the album sound like they could be(Backseat Freestyle, start of m.A.A.d. City, Compton), but it gave me the vibe of some softer, slower song a commercial rapper or R&B artist would come out with. Also, Compton, while designed to be banger, is actually one of my favorite songs on the CD. It's also the kind of radio-styled song I can dig, especially beat-wise.

Swimming Pools is not commercial at all. I think they released it as a single because it's about drinking and could be a used as a party song but in reality it's about the negative effects of alcohol abuse so it's pretty ironic that people would drink to it.
Anyway, I fucking love the song. It's grown on me a lot and the album version with the third verse is even better than the single version.

The album version completes it. The version they have for the video is the bit that can deceive one into thinking its a drinking song, and that's where the "commercial" aspect comes in. Without listening to what he's saying, and just paying attention to the hook, any idiot would just hear a good beat and talk of drinking and bump it. The lyrics are what really take away the commercial accessibility more than anything. Kind of interesting, because I feel a lot of the tracks on the album do the opposite: the verses might make you think he's supporting it if you're not paying attention or not listening to the full album(in general just not understanding the concept), but the chorus brings it together in a sort of satirical manner. I feel Money Trees is a good example of that(one of my favorite tracks on the album, by the way).
The thing is, Kendrick did a great job on this album of combining a commercial and underground sound, being able to appeal to both sides without sacrificing anything. Not including bonus tracks, there are at least 4 songs that could get radio play and be successful, and only one of those do I not care to listen to without playing the whole disc. Makes it a bit harder to discern what would be a radio track, especially when his lyrics are almost always beyond commercial expectations.

Then Taylor Allderdice from earlier this year might be my favorite thing he's done yet. It's just a great project, nothing feels forced. But then he comes back recently with Cabin Fever 2, which I thought was pretty bland and weak. Interested to see where he goes with the album. I like this single.

It's great to see a queer rapper getting some sort of buzz. Song is actually kind of nifty (and catchy). Not sure I'll be listening to it again though. But then maybe that hook will start to eat away at me.
Aside from the Roc Marciano, I've been fucking GORGING on Bun-B and UGK recently. God I love that man. And Pimp C RIP. :(

Dudes, I'm telling you. Maybe it's because I first heard the song a few times on a Stussy mix, but I can't avoid it now. Not sure if the beat samples We Fly High, but the hook is just infectious. There's been a ton of pieces about this guy, everywhere from NY Times to Interview Mag. Lots of people are saying his style is akin to Weezy when he was on fire, which I don't really see, but I'm up for anything that's different and pushing the boundaries, even if it's not something I'm completely into myself.
Or maybe I'm just weird
Re: The Heist... it's definitely a great record and dude is a great rapper, but I have a hard time getting into most of it. I got sick of the conscious rapper stuff years ago, and it seems that's his main angle. "Wing$" is definitely an incredible song, I like the fact he's shining some light on society's obsession with sneakers and materialism, but I found it to be kind of hypocritical. Dude himself wears countless expensive sneakers still, he even posted a pic on his Instagram of the newest Nike Kanye West shoes which sell for around $2000. Just seems contradictory to me.. you're trying to drive home this point, then you're on the Internet flaunting your Yeezys worth 2 racks? I don't follow.
Ringo, our tastes are so alike, it's scary. I've been on a huge UGK kick for like the last two years. Pimp C is one of the most underrated artists ever. Maybe my favorite voice in rap music period. And a lot of people don't realize, he produced a ton of their material and sang his ass off too. So talented.

Hey guys check out this little mix I made: http://soundcloud.com/rchrstphr/very-rare-mix-1
If nothing else, hopefully you can find something dope on there that you hadn't heard before. I'm just messing around on a free program, pretty much just changing pitches and mixing random songs, no real skill required but it's a lot of fun. Props to all the real DJs and producers out there cause I just don't have the mind for it.

The new Wiz is pretty enjoyable. I like it a lot more than Rolling Papers. Still think Taylor Allderdice might be his best work.

Do you like the High School Soundtrack? That's probably my favorite ( tho obviously it's a collab)
Overall I definitely think he makes great weed music that I can vibe to when I'm in that mood but none of it has huge replay value. I honestly don't think I've ever heard Rolling Papers in full but the singles from it (No Sleep, Black & Yellow, On My Level, Roll Up) are all super catchy and fun and some of my favorite tracks of his.

Big Boi sounding fucking awesome so far. This guy just really knows how to make an album. He needs to get in touch with someone like Jadakiss and give them pointers on making a truly cohesive project like these last two.

son_of_foley is right. That Big Boi album is funk-tastic. Fresh and creative stuff, though there are a couple tracks that don't really cater or appeal to me. Still, with only one listen-through, I was bobbin' my heada lot. I'll be lisening to it again to see if the other songs grow on me.

A couple more mixes for fun. Somehow the very first one I did has 300+ plays while the newer ones are struggling to get any at all, but whatever. Enjoy if you'd like.
https://soundcloud.com/rchrstphr/raspberries-mix - 60min, not much rap on this one.. it's got Big Boi, De La Soul, Drake, and the Fugees, but also stuff like Smashing Pumpkins, Phantogram, Frank Ocean, Radiohead, and Aaliyah.
https://soundcloud.com/golddollars/y-u-mad-mix - straight 30min rap mix. Features G-Side, Fat Trel, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q, Jay-Z, Clipse, Raekwon, Lil Kim, and MMG.
https://soundcloud.com/golddollars/first-good-one-in-awhile - random 40min mix with stuff like Kanye, The Cure, Big Boi/ASAP Rocky, UGK, Frank Ocean, Freddie Gibbs, and the Weeknd.

He's been one of the most hyped young rappers for a couple of years now and for good reason. He's a very talented emcee and has consistently delivered the goods. His guest spots particularly tend to be more noteworthy than most. HiiiPower was such a choon. This year he's become one of the most talked about rappers of all and GKMC is the hip-hop album currently transcending genre and appearing on most publication's EOY lists.
He's really good.
Did anyone post the A$AP tracklist?

3.PMW (All I Really Need) feat. Schoolboy Q

That T.I. track with Andre 3000 is fucking HOT. I'm not even that big of a T.I. fan, but that's one of his better tracks.
Also, that Mystikal track is FRESH as hell. Never heard anything like it. It's a unique turn for Mystikal and Hip-op in general. I'm more excited to hear more stuff from Mystikal than I have ever been.

Wow yeah that Mystikal song is pretty neat. Not at all what I was expecting. I really doubt his Cash Money stuff will end up sounding like that, but cool nonetheless.
Actually surprised no one in here has been talking about Trinidad James.. he seems to be the talk of the net lately. I'm not completely sold on him, definitely seems like way more image than substance, but his tape's not bad. Definitely has potential. This shit here is hilarious..

That Chamillionaire song wasn't exactly a good example of lyricism, Bert. Pretty boring honestly.
Gave Big Boi a spin in the car for the first time today. Holy shit. The mixing on that album is pretty close to perfect. It sounded amazing.
Chief Keef's album sounds okay so far. Definitely better than I expected. For that trap niche, it's really well done. Reckless party music.
New Meyhem Lauren tape is awesome. Especially if you're really into lyrics and don't just claim to be. Production is great too.
