When the game improves there will be something to say. The sheer fact that Gambino takes up so much of the time on this forum (and indeed that QS is still going on about Canibus and DVDA is still going on about the facepaint friends) is evidence that hip-hop remains in a slump.

Whenever anyone posts something I enjoy, I always make a point of crediting it, as I did above...there just isn't that much to be effusive about. It doesn't help that the site I use to get new hip-hop (2DopeBoyz, someone on here linked me to it) seems to post every single hip-hop track that it ever hears of, with no quality control, so you have to download 100 tracks to find one that is any good...is there a site that is more selective?

Simon, you seriously cannot use this thread as a gauge of what's going on in hip-hop. Of course people are going to be biased and lean towards their favorite artists. And they should, passionate fans are the best.

There's a TON of good stuff that has come out this year. Some of my favorites just to name a few are albums from El-P, Killer Mike, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Curren$y, Big K.R.I.T., Meyhem Lauren, Action Bronson, Dom Kennedy, and Alchemist. Plenty of stuff to get you started if you need some newer material to check out.

And as far as finding a blog that only posts music you like, good fucking luck. That's always been part of the fun of finding stuff on the internet to me, weeding through the crap and finding the cream that rises to the top. But, if you don't have patience or truly enjoy music, I guess it could be time consuming. My favorite blog is Nahright.com, simply because they get just about everything first.

Simon
July 4th, 2012, 2:00 PM
Na it has nothing to do with not having patience, and I know you'll never find something exclusively to your tastes (and you're right that it limits what you will find), but 2DB is ridiculous - there has to be a happy medium somewhere. Do you use 2DB? I have spent an hour downloading every song since the last time I checked, often going to 50-100 new tracks, and don't find even ONE that is any good. They seem to accept any old crap. That, plus my dislike for a lot of new stuff anyway, makes it frustrating.

I Youtubed a bunch of Coka Nostra tracks after that one Bert posted and he seems pretty good, just downloaded his discography and gonna have a look through it tonight at some point.

Yeah, La Coka Nostra is a group, but I really can't blame Simon, they should have promoted their first project a lot better than they did. But it WAS Ill Bill, Everlast, Danny Boy, Slaine, and DJ Lethal. Now I think it's just Ill Bill, Slaine, and Danny Boy. Still really good stuff though. You should check out their first album, A Brand You Can Trust.

I don't really use 2DB, but I do use Nahright a whole lot.

No one's talking about that Ab-Soul verse on "Unnecessary"? Best verse I've heard on this mixtape so far. Shreds it.

EDIT- Just hit "RIP", loving the Night Call sample from the Drive Soundtrack. That beat was just begging for someone to rap over it. Nicely done DG.

I got to see them with Blaze Ya Dead Homie & KMK a few years ago while tripping on DOI. They put on a really good live show. Everlast left to take care of his daughter.

I know people that still think Tech N9ne is a group.

I'd never heard of LCN until yesterday. I thought it was odd that Ill Bill was all over 'his' tracks. Finding out that it has Everlast and fucking DJ Lethal has just put me off massively even though I quite liked what I thought LCN was just five minutes ago. Gave a listen to a few tracks last night, not bad but it seems like a lot of their beats are near-exact ripoffs of earlier stuff. 'That's Coke' is a direct steal of 'U Don't Know' by Jay-Z and there was another track that jacked Klashnekoff's 'Sayonara', I forget which.

Link to Sayonara because it's awesome:

Everlast is still a good rapper, he definitely wouldn't be working with ILL Bill, Bill don't give a fuck about your name and Everlast isn't exactly carrying much weight in the mainstream. TBH, ILL Bill rapping with him probably gives Everlast more cred than if he had tried to make a House of Pain comeback. Plus man, you're talking about having an issue with them sampling some Jay-Z shit when Jay-Z's done the exact same, even taking Biggy Smalls own raps and putting them as his own. Sorry, "paying homage" lol. Either way man I hope you keep bumpin this shit, it's pretty dope just to hear the old and new school flavor mixing on some harder shit.

G-Fresh
July 5th, 2012, 1:13 PM
Everlast and Danny Boy are no longer members and I'm not sure about DJ Lethal. Slaine is the standout of the group imo.

July 5th, 2012, 1:19 PM
Oh I'm not complaining as such, of course hip-hop has a history of sampling, being inspired by or outright thieving material...but those two tracks sit in a weird zone between being new productions with heavy use of samples and vocal dubs over the original beat...they both sound like slightly altered mixes of the originals. Not sure if my point is very clear.

Reminds me of that old story about Mario Winans paying The Fugees for the use of the Ready Or Not sample, then getting sued by Enya who The Fugees had sampled in the first place

I linked you to it. They do post a lot of stuff but it's probably because people have different tastes, the production is usually good even if I think the rapper sucks.

I just stick to listening to songs by artists I know most of the time, or you could look at the dope/nope votes to get a good idea of what's good.

Um wow. I never in a million years thought I'd say this, but that Gathering of the Juggalos lineup looks halfway decent. Maybe someone more informed can fill me in, what's the deal with all of these "regular" artists joining on? I know Tech N9ne's always kind of been in that niche, but it seems like out of nowhere this thing has kind of blown up. Is it just a novelty? I don't get it.

But yeah, a handful of artists I'd like to see. Three 6, Geto Boys, Danny Brown, Tech, Master P would be fun, DMX, Game, HEEMS!!!!!!, Onyx, Kool Keith, Slaine, Mack 10, Warren G, The Pharcyde. Man... those names alone would be enough for me. This is surreal to be perfectly honest.

Rapper KMG, of legendary west coast group Above The Law, passed away recently, with news spreading around social networks on Saturday (July 7)

Rip to my original G Funk homeboy KMG. him and above the law raised me as a rookie," Warren G tweeted (@Regulator).

"One of the best. Dope mc and a good good brotha. Long live KMG," added N.W.A. member MC Ren (@MCRenCPT).

"Some people credit Above The Law with helping innovate the sound we all heard and loved on the first Chronic album. #RIPKMG," Crooked I tweeted (@CrookedIntriago).

Above The Law got their start as an act on Eazy-E's Ruthless Records in the late 1980's, releasing their debut album Livin' Like Hustlers in 1990, which featured guest appearances from several N.W.A. members and even production from Dr. Dre.

KMG (aka KMG The Illustrator) worked on eight albums with the group, which he founded alongside Big Hutch (aka Cold 187um) and DJ Total K-Oss. In 22 years, A.T.L. was signed to Tommy Boy Records and Death Row Records, following their deal with Ruthless.

Livin' Like Hustlers and their third album, Black Mafia Life, both received gold certification, latter featuring an early appearance by Tupac Shakur. Their last album together came was 2009's Sex, Money & Music, their seventh studio LP.

Im devistated as an ATL fan and I'm crushed as a friend. RIP KMG. My heart goes out to his family, friends and especially to Cold 187um - VJ

The GZA's always been my personal favorite. I love his lyrical style and delivery. He's very sharp. I like Inspectah Deck a lot, too, but his solo shit was never as good as any tracks he did elsewhere, whether it be on an actual Wu Tang release or on one of the other member's solo albums.

I still haven't heard much of Wu Tang's albums after 36 Chambers. Wu Forever seems kind of weak, and I just never got around to the rest, but most of them are still getting out great solo albums.

This guy sounds hungry. In my eyes this is the TRUE Stillmatic, or Illmatic sequel type deal. It really plays like a early 90's rap album, save for a few tracks. The Swizz Beatz song definitely can go, but everything else is pretty much  Some excellent verses. I love this album.

Ditto. I'm not sure where it will rank in Nas's discography yet. Stillmatic was rightfully hailed as a reutrn to form for Nas and while it does fall off in the last 5 tracks or so, I don't think anything on Life is Good is on the level of One Mic, 2nd Childhood or Rewind. But LIG is more consistent. I can't call it yet. He gets a little more personal than he normally does with the stuff about Kelis and the Daughters track, and it all sounds very sincere and refreshing as compared to the more preachy stuff he did on Hip Hop is Dead and Nigger.

That grating, monotone voice over dull, repetitive beats is why it's not good. No one is denying he is unoriginal or unambitious - but those qualities alone doesn't make a good rapper. Unfortunately the reality is that with all the technical skill in the world, if you don't have a listenable voice and a consistently strong beat selection, most people aren't going to be interested in listening to you.

Is God Forgives, I Don't any good? I liked that Three Kings track. I was on record before as hating Rick Ross but I have to admit there's a certain brainless quality to his stuff that appeals to me when I'm getting my adrenaline going before football or whatever.

August 7th, 2012, 12:47 PM
I thought Teflon Don was really good with a lot of bangers throughout. Nothing brilliant by any means but a good pump up/party album like Simon was saying and without much filler. Like I said I only got through the first half of GFID but from what I heard it seems to be a step back in terms of production. And Ross without banging production is very blah. I'm going to listen to the rest of it now though.

Well, there's a few mediocre songs (Throw It Away) but overall I have to say I like it. Get Up is good, We Did It is good, Flip A Bird is good, I wish Rescue Me had someone like Tech N9ne on it, I think he would have worked really well, Frat House is kind of meh, Park It Sideways will probably be a single, Our Way is good, Asylum is ok, The Other Side (a bonus track) is good, Place To Be is surprisingly good.

These are just first impressions though. It will probably grow on me the more I listen to it.

welcome to: our house

our house 9/10 love this song. em+skylar hooks are great. em's flow isnt amazing but its a good verse, and the other guys do well.

coffin 7.5/10 pretty good i dig it

throw that 5.5/10 awful beat. uninspired em, nothing else particularly redeeming. i can still listen to it tho

hammer dance 8.5/10 definitely has grown on me. its an understated dope song.

get up 7/10 not bad but a little disappointing for a No I.D. track

my life 8/10 another single that grew on me. the beat is fluffy but it works well for a radio/party song. and the flows are nice.

flip a bird 6/10 this song is fucking weird. i dont particularly like the beat or hook but its listenable.

throw it away 7/10 fuck the haters i fucks with this song. swizz is good on the hook and the silly shit they do with the flow amuses me.

rescue me 8.5/10 love me some more skylar. the beat isnt bad, better than most alex beats. very good verses.

frat house 8/10 this song gets me amped. great party/get fucked up song.

goodbye 9/10 joe's verse  all three are some of the best on the album. decent beat and good, fitting hook

park it sideways 6.5/10 the beat sounds just like 'the show goes on' (same producer) but its not quite as good and the verses are pretty uninspired. the hook is catchy though.

die 6/10 listenable but kinda wack. i do like how they all rap about shooting people.

our way 7/10 those weak, generic boi 1da snares are annoying. but otherwise its a decent enough track.

I think the transitions on this disc are really good which is a plus.

overall: 7.5/10

I guess I should go back and listen again. I was pretty let down with this one, one of the bigger disappointments in recent memory. I also wasn't really feeling the mixtape, maybe I just haven't been in the mood for their style. But nothing really "wowed" me lyrically.

Surprised that you (fro) ranked "Our Way" and "Flip a Bird" the way you did, those were 2 of the only songs that stood out to me. The production on the album is just all over the place. Abrasive, and not in a good way.

Stuff like "Throw That" (just bad) and "Park It Sideways" (way too poppy) doesn't belong anywhere on this album, much less in this group's catalog.

I just don't see how with 4 of the dopest MC's, this is what you come up with. Sure they've got Em's awful ear for beats and other people controlling the album now that they're on the major, but really... none of these guys spoke up to say some of these songs were totally fucking wack? How can you be proud of this album?

I dunno, it's just kind of like.. this was the worst case scenario with the Shady deal. It almost seemed too good to fuck up. But between this and Yelawolf, I'd say they are 0/2.

EDIT: On 2nd listen, "Get Up" is pretty damn dope. I didn't realize that was a No ID beat. Maybe my favorite on the album.

Meanwhile, this is probably my favorite beat of the year. How the fuck is a 19 year old white girl dropping better songs than Slaughterhouse? Riff Raff is wildly entertaining too. I wrote the dude off as a novelty for the longest time, and that's pretty much exactly what he is, but he's gotta be the most enjoyable novelty of all time. Love him on the Action Bronson stuff too.

BTW, for what its worth, Danny Brown is my favorite guy out right now. Definitely my favorite of the "new" class.

Yeah Get Up is good, I think the "lose" on repeat part just kinda annoys me cuz it sounds like a ripoff of Clipse's Champion.

Anyway, I think 7.5/10 is still an underachievement for them but I do enjoy the album. Then again what have these guys ever done on their own? It's not like any of them has a classic album to their name.

The mixtape is also pretty good I think you should give it another listen.

Yeah sorry guys, it's Beautiful Lou on that Kitty Pryde beat. There's just something hypnotizing about that shit. Kitty Pryde's got some other stuff worth listening to, too. The thing I like about her is she's not on some Kreayshawn, fake gangster white girl shit. She's just her. She raps about her dad taking away her Adderall and being sad about her boyfriend. I can appreciate the honesty. And really, she's not a terrible rapper.. she's actually got a unique flow (although some compare her to Kilo Kish). And Riff Raff is just amazing.

Harry Fraud is also really, really killing the beats right now. Probably my favorite producer of the moment. Anyone who hasn't definitely needs to check out his EP with Curren$y, "Cigarette Boats" and also his album with Smoke DZA, "Rugby Thompson". Great projects.

Here's another slept on song from this year.. Action Bronson (who has also been absolutely killing it) and Riff Raff over Harry Fraud production. Another one of my favorite beats this year. Just too smooth for words, it makes me want to smoke 1,000 blunts on a beach.

I ended up listening to a lot of Kitty Pryde's stuff(pretty much all of it, but not all of her songs on industry beats). She has such a unique style of lyrics, and like you said, you have to appreciate the honesty, even if you don't always care what she's rapping about. I could do without the romantic songs where she's talking about being sad about her boyfriend, especially because a LOT of her songs tend to focus on that. I enjoy her stuff otherwise, though, and she's almost always rapping on some odd, hypnotic, and down-right enjoyable beat. So I'm keeping my eye on her and supporting her, but I know there will only be certain tracks I'll really dig.

Like Orion's Belt. That's the best example of her style that I can really get into. All the stalker talk and stuff is neat too...and surprisingly, I can even dig the honest Bieber love if only because it feels creepy. Unique talent.

Riff Raff seems pretty cool, too, but I have to listen to more of his stuff. That verse on that Bronson track is pretty nice, and that beat is just mesmerizing. Good stuff...not too big a fan of Bronson's flow, though.

:wtf: Yeah...

Really surprised there isn't more talk about the Frank Ocean album in here. "Pyramids" is probably the best song I've heard all year. It's 10 minutes long and I feel like I've spent half of the last 2 months listening to it.

Still can't get over how underwhelming the Slaughterhouse album is. I wanted to love it. There's a few tracks I'll probably come back to and enjoy more as time passes, but it's just not what I wanted. I'd say that their debut + the handful of tracks that leaked before it are still better than anything they've done sense. Where's the "Sound Off" and "Microphone" type bangers? I actually bought their last one, but I'm not getting near a physical copy of this one.

Kinda disappointed with the ASAP Mob tape. The beats are amazing, but unfortunately a lot of the guys just aren't very good rappers. ASAP Nast is decent, and ASAP Ferg has the dope Big Moe-ish singing thing going on, but some of the lyrics are just hard to listen to. "Coke & White Bitches" is my favorite song and it's ridiculous how bad ASAP Ant (by far the worst of the bunch) sounds next to Danny Brown, Fat Trel, and Gunplay. The Rocky tracks are all quality though.

Speaking of Gunplay, dude is KILLING it lately. I still don't know how people in here were trashing him, saying he couldn't rap. Are you kidding me? He out-raps EVERYONE on MMG's "Power Circle". Sure, he's not the most thought provoking or inspirational rapper, but that's not what he's trying to be either. He's a crazy coke head and it's entertaining as fuck.

You really liked that album and mixtape that much? I haven't touched them since the week they dropped. Kinda disappointing really, I wanted to love them. What are your favorite tracks at this point?

New Flying Lotus album, while not technically hip-hop I guess, is fucking brilliant. One of the best things I've heard all year.

GOOD Music album should have been longer but there's a ton of gems. Ghostface on New God Flow obviously has everyone talking, but I really like The Morning and Higher as well. Nice to hear Mase sounding motivated. And Cyhi Da Prince really steals the show when he wants to, I love when he comes on "Sin City"..

Lupe's record is pretty good. A whole lot better than Lasers. I don't know what his infatuation with having singing on almost damn near every hook is, but it's a good album.

New Homebody Sandman is really good too

Besides that, been listening to a lot of Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire, Spaceghostpurrp, and Danny Brown of course.

Yeah, not that you were talking to me, but I still bump that album on the reg. Off the mixtape, Back The Fuck Up is my favorite track. It's the one song I wish would have made the album. It's probably the most purely lyrical song of either release. On The House and Juggernauts are my other main joints off the tape. As for the album, I think Goodbye, Our House, Hammer Dance and Get Up are the outstanding tracks but other than Throw That there aren't any songs I don't fuck with. The Other Side is one I've been bumping a lot lately. At first I was disappointed in it because I was expecting a JUSTICE League banger but if you throw out that expectation it's a really dope song. Royce's verse is so good, one of the best on the album. In fact all of the bonus tracks are great in their own right. Place to Be should have been a single, Asylum is that Relapse-esque Em production, and Walk of Shame is just fun.

Regarding Cruel Summer, The One is probably my favorite of the the 4 new posse cuts (The One, Higher, The Morning, Sin City) despite 2 Chainz feeling out of place on it (if Mos Def or Common replaced him on the third verse it would have been a real classic). The Morning is the gem of the bunch lyrically but The One's beat and hook >>
