What's odd about them? They are legitimate criticisms - for me, a hip-hop show is not about lasers, video screens and your latest big hit being played seven times. I'm not pushing my opinions on anyone, as I said before if it works for you then go for it, but that doesn't make the criticisms any less valid.

Surely it depends on the people playing? Have you listen to the lyrics in watch the throne, it about being flash the biggest and richest cunts about and they can do what they want. Why the fuck would they want to play a little show with a DJ when they could play fucking massive shows with lasers and fireworks.
Hink about it Simon.

The setlist is pretty solid. I think that's an odd argument. Things are going to be left off so I get that but it's hardly weak.
The lasers etc is because it's an arena/stadium tour you need to do bigger things. A stage and crowd could easily swallow up a stripped back performance. Also if they went out with just a DJ people would call them lazy.
Kanye puts on a good live show, this will be a spectacle.

Exactly. An intimate show with Kanye & Jay-Z would feel a bit strange at this point. It's the perfect setting for all their pomp and circumstance. One common complaint for these big arena shows is sound, especially when it comes to Hip-Hop, and both Fro and Morrison have said the sound was great.

I've never heard of any artist/band playing a song more than once unless there was a fuck up or they did an alternate version. If you're stupid enough to buy tickets to this shit thinking Jay-Z's going to do a bunch of his classics when it's a collaboration, sorry about your luck. Go to a Jay-Z concert, not to mention these dudes are proving that they can put out subpar records for the last 5 years and STILL dupe you cats into buying their tix and records without even hesitating.
I know people say that rap music has sucked above the underground level for awhile, but really the last 5 years are like what Rock went through in the 80's with shitty bands like Warrant and Poison. This is glam rap, even the most respected are sucked into it.

Cuz dude was probably wayyyy too high to remember he did it once before.
For real though, was it the same exact version or did they alter it a little? The Foo Fighters I think did something like this where they played a riff from Monkey Wrench at the start of the show and then closed with the rest of the song.

Watch the Throne may have been a bit underwhelming following Dark Fantasy, but I still think it was the best rap record of 2011. You're telling me "Murder to Excellence" (especially the "Excellence" half) isn't incredible? New Day? Illest Motherfucker Alive? Primetime? Why I Love You?
You'd really put That's My Bitch above those songs?

Stringer, none of those tracks particularly got me. That's My Bitch is the ONLY track on regular rotation for me. Niggas In Paris must be the most overhyped single in years, it's ok but people seem to think it's the second coming. WTT is still better than My Beautiful Twisted Dark Fantasy though, your overappreciation of that waste piece of shit is bizarre to me. All Of The Lights was pretty good in an overblown kind of way, it was clearly contrived as an 'anthemic' or 'epic' track and it more or less succeeded...the rest of the album was mostly kind of boring. Runaway was dross.
Kanye's albums have got progressively worse since his debut, which IMO is one of the best hip-hop albums of the past decade or so. Since he decided he wanted to play this weird artist character a lot of his stuff has been pretentious shit.
Anyone know any good DL sites for new tracks like I mentioned earlier?
Ringo
February 24th, 2012, 6:44 PM
That's My Bitch might be the worst track on the album. Murder To Excellence is probably the best.

Yeah, thats also the worst track for me. But partly because its an old Good Friday track so it was old even before WTT was released.

He ended the show with it then went backstage and the crowd chanted encore for like 20 minutes until he came back out and performed it again. It's easily the best concert I've ever been to.

God Rihanna is such a dumb cunt. Lost any respect I had for her after this most recent "reconciliation".
DMX is awesome. I actually watched that interview yesterday, and caught a audio stream of his comeback show at SOB's in NY last night. It was pretty fun. A lot of unintelligible mumbling in between songs, but overall it was quality. Some of his new material actually sounded decent. There was a killer song that sample Biggie's "time to get paid" line.
His new single isn't bad either.

So does that mean we can expect to hear the album we’ve all be waiting on?
It depends on which album you’re talking about.
A new ‘Kast album!
There’s been a lot of talk on the Internet about an OutKast album and I have to say that as of now, there are no plans for another OutKast album. There’s a lot of music on the horizon. I’ve been living off the excitement of new artists. I’ve been privileged to have these new artists kind of reach out and grab back and say, “Hey, Andre, we want you on this song.” So I’ve been taking those calls and for the last two years, I’ve been doing collaborations. So these new artists have kind of been keeping me alive. I’ve just really been feeding off of that and this year I think I’m planning to do a solo project. I don’t know when it will come out, but hopefully it’ll come out this year. As far as OutKast, I really don’t know if or when that will happen.
The only thing I can really say is I’m going to get back to having fun because that’s what it was all about when I started this in high school—with OutKast—those were like high school dreams. I’m 36 now, so I have grown-man dreams. This album will just be me being myself as normal.

Mystikal is the fucking shit. "Unpredictable" was one of 4 rap albums that changed my life (the other 3 being Esham's "Closed Casket", Twiztid's "Mostasteless" and Outkast's "ATLiens"). Honestly I don't really care for anything after or before that record but it was so good it still makes him one of the best. Luckily for him he didn't get life for having a hand in that rape case.

Don't know how I missed this, but I really like it. I was wondering how he would handle Jay beats but he held his own.
TWV: The Blue Album recently dropped on Valentines Day and featured you selecting beats from Jay Z ‘s Blueprint trilogy. What was the thought process behind doing a project like this?
Connor: The way The Blue Album came about was so crazy and sporadic. I’m all about elevating and when it’s all said and done I don’t want to be just another rapper. I’m not oblivious, I know there are a lot of people who aren’t aware of what I’m doing. My intention was to knock out a mix tape in five days, over all Jay Z beats, and I’m putting it out as soon as possible. I’m calling the series “The Best In The World,” because I’m going to say it until the people, and the critics say it with me. If you want to be the best in the world at what you do you have to tell yourself first.
With The Blue Album I wanted to start by paying homage and respect to those that actually are the Best In The World. I’m definitely going to do an Eminem tape, it’s going to be called The Peoples Rapper’ LP. Good rap music to me growing up was Jay Z, Biggie, Eminem, Nas, Pac, Pun, Soulja Slim, these are some of the people that were The Best In The World to me. I figured If I’m striving to to be the best in the world then what better way to do that than by paying respect to those that already are. The Best In The World Mixtape series is me in a room by myself screaming at the top of my lungs just wanting somebody to hear me.
TWV: With your Season 1 and Season 2 mix tape series that were named after Vinnie Chase on Entourage, what are some of your other influences outside of music?
Connor: Anything related to entertainment influences me. People find it funny when they find out that the WWE influences me. There is a craft to wrestling just like there is to music. You could be the best wrestler in the world but if your gimmick and marketability ain’t right, then nobody cares. The same thing with music your buying into this character that they’re selling, not necessarily that someone is being fake, but you have to sell your self to the people. I studied everybody from Muhammad Ali, to Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Dave Matthews Band, Jay Z, Kanye West, The Rock, all of these people that we consider great at what they do. They all shared drive, will, ambition, and were never satisfied with where they were at in their craft. I can quote Muhammad Ali lines to you just like I can quote Jay Z lyrics to you, because at the end of the day it’s all the same.
TWV: Coming into 2012 you’ve set yourself up to make a major impact in music. How do you plan to capitalize off your buzz?
Connor: First I want to thank everybody that’s supported my movement, the blogs, the websites, and magazines have all helped me live my dream. When your so passionate about your craft and what you do and you want the world to hear you, it’s just a humbling feeling. Right now I feel like The Joker in The Dark Knight. This town deserves a better class of criminal and I’m gonna give it to them. My expectations for myself are so high, and I never want to let myself down, or All Varsity Music which is my company. I’m so focused right now my eyes are on the prize because I know how hard I have to work to get where I want to be, and I look at the greats and they’re all at where they’re at because of their work ethics to get there. Your all gonna get a lot of good quality music from me this year. If I have to put out a project every month then so be it because I love what I do and I feel that people need a high quality of music.
A mixtape based off Em! :panic:

Pretty much a formality by this point, but Kendrick is now officially signed to Aftermath.
Kendrick Lamar and Black Hippy have closed a deal with Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records.
According to FADER, Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith says that the pair have "just closed" a joint venture deal with the labels. K. Dot's official label debut Good Kid in a Mad City will release jointly between Top Dawg, Aftermath and Interscope. All future releases by ScHoolBoy Q, Ab-Soul and Jay Rock will release through Top Dawg and Interscope.

Hip Hop is boring right now. Not really into Krit or Tech 9. Looking forward to the OF mixtape at least.
If you like Jay-Z, this is a good read.
Young Guru Reveals 15 Things You Didn't Know About Jay-Z
1. He Watches Every YouTube Rapper
Young Guru: “Jay-Z has probably watched every SMACK DVD, Grind Time battle, freestyle, and every battle that has ever been on YouTube. If you ever battle in any situation that has any remote type of promotion, he’s seen it. He calls me like, ‘Please come watch this battle.’ Jay watches all of them. I mean all of them. Every battle that has ever been on.
“Jay watches these dudes freestyle on YouTube. Like, if you’re a battle MC from Philly, you may not have been in a battle but you just get on YouTube and start rapping, Jay watches those religiously. It’s just the weirdest thing in the world but he really loves it to the point where I’m like, ‘Yo, turn it off.’”
2. Him and Beyoncé Leave Restaurants Separately
Young Guru: “Jay doesn’t lust for the limelight. He ain’t want all this nonsense of having to leave restaurants at a different time than [Beyoncé] because [the paparazzi] get more money if they snap both of them together. That’s so corny. He just wants to go and eat but he’s gotta think about dumb shit like that now. They can’t walk out the restaurant together. How dumb is that? But it’s reality.”
3. He’s Nice At Basketball
Young Guru: “[When we were recording The Blueprint 3] Kanye was like, ‘I just bought the crib in Hawaii. Come through, I’ll have the cook cook for us and we’ll go run ball before we hit the studio.’ We get up, me and Jay go over there, we eat breakfast, Kanye’s showing us this nice new crib, and then we go out and play ball.
“It wasn’t even like we shut down or rented a whole gym. We just rode around, found an outside court at some kid’s school, and we played ball. The kids looked outside and was like, ‘Oh shit that’s Kanye and Jay-Z playing ball on our court.’ We all went out and had a nice little exercise.
“Jay is absolutely nice at ball. He’s got a nice 12-foot jumper. He knows the game. He’s smart about the game. For Kanye and them it’s more exercise; they’re not ballers.
“I came from playing ball; I played ball in high school and college. For me, it’s like I’m super out of shape but I can’t let Kanye and Don C. beat me in basketball. I gotta use what I know to win the game. But that game was more about getting together and brotherhood thing.”
4. Jay Lets Young Guru Keep All His Music
Young Guru: “That’s part of where my job extends beyond normal engineering because once Jay got comfortable with me, it was more than ‘Record and mix my albums.’ It became ‘Oversee my music.’ That means, I hold it all.
"First of all, Jay doesn’t want any of his music on any other drives but my hard drive. If it leaks, it’s on me. For Jay, it’s safer to have me as his central base versus it being scattered all over the city.
“Whether I mix them or not, I gather all the mixes. If Timbaland’s guy mixed this and Pharrell mixed this, I got all the mixes. I go present all the mixes to our mastering guy. I sit with the mastering guy doing the tweeks and EQing, doing the spacing in-between the records, all of that stuff. And we put the whole album together.
“If CBS is putting ‘Heart of the City’ in the beginning of some cop show, they’ll come to me and be like, ‘Can I get the instrumental TV track?’ because they know I hold everything. If he’s in Rocawear and we need a voice-over, call Guru. It’s those type things.
“That all falls into my responsibility. It’s gone beyond the normal thing. It’s become a gig to take care of Jay-Z’s musical world.”
5. His Adlibs Are Live
Young Guru: “If you hear Jay-Z say, ‘Guru, tell that girl open that Ace’ or ‘Turn the lights down,’ on a song, he’s really talking [to people in the studio]. Like on Scarface’s ‘Guess Who’s Back,’ when he’s talking in the beginning and he’s like, ‘Gu turn my headphones down, my headphones distorting,’ that’s all real.”
6. He Does One Take Because He Memorizes His Raps
Young Guru: “Jay memorizes his raps before he gets in the booth. That’s all it is. Too many MCs write their raps in the booth. Jay [doesn’t write his rhymes] down, but he memorizes and says the rap 50,000 times before he even thinks about stepping in the booth.
“By the time he steps in the booth, he’s said it so many times he already memorized the record and he’s been so particular about the bounce and the flow that it’s not hard for him to do it in one take.
“He writes and critiques his records more than any other MC that I’ve ever seen and goes line for line: ‘Is this too complicated or not complicated enough? Am I over-rapping it? Am I not giving them enough tricks?’
“All while we’re out here kicking it, smoking, doing whatever we’re doing, he’s saying to you, ‘This is the record. This is what I’m gonna say Gu,’ and he says it 80,000 times. When he taps you and goes, ‘Yo, I’m ready,’ he’s really ready.
“It saves so much time. It’s about memorizing your raps. I tell everybody, you can write your records at home, you can write your records in a car, you can write your rhymes anywhere. You shouldn’t be spending $150 an hour to be writing a song. The studio is to record music.”
7. He Occasionally Needs To “Download” His Rhymes
Young Guru: “Jay writes in his head, so we have times where he goes, ‘I need to download.’ He doesn’t call it that, but that’s what I call it. There’s so much stuff in his head that sometimes he just raps to a hi-hat or to a click or to nothing because he’s writing songs and he needs to remember them so he’ll record them. So it’s like, take that out the brain until I need it again. I can put it back in there when I need to say it.
“After we got home from the Watch the Throne tour, Jay was writing and when the New Year started not only did we knock out the song ‘Glory’ for Blue Ivy Carter, but it’s just like, ‘Okay, download. Just put up any beat or give me a click and let me just say these raps so I can just have them. I need to get them out of my mind because I’ve been holding them for two months.’ He does that a lot. He just started going in and it’s like every other day we’d end up with new records.”
8. He Once Offered Jaz-O A Record Deal
Young Guru: “If you ever notice, when people complain about Jay they never say, He did something to me.’ They always say what he didn’t do for them.
“It’s the Jaz-O thing where it’s like, ‘I brought you into this.’ Jay is like, ‘Yeah, I’m here and you’re here. If you just play your part...’ But it don’t happen like that, it’s the, ‘You’re my son and you’re supposed to...’ But Jay is like, ‘Nah that’s not what happened. Now I’m here and I run all of this.’
“Jay tried to give Jaz a deal. But when he was trying to give him a deal, they were just starting Roc-A-Fella. They gave him a $300,000 deal and Jaz laughed at it. They couldn’t afford to give you a major deal, so Jaz went with a major company. It’s not Jay’s fault.
“Jay is like, ‘We offered you a deal, that’s how much we could afford to give you. $300,000 was a lot for you back then, you didn’t roll with it. You fucked up. It’s not my fault. What do you want me to do?’
“No matter what I do it’s not going to be enough. Jaz-O came to Jay and was like, ‘You have to be on my album.’ OK, he gives you a verse, that’s easy. But then you decide to shoot your video on this day and Jay already got something planned. Now Jaz-O is mad at Jay because he didn’t come to the video. And Jay is like, ‘I didn’t do anything to you, it’s what I’m not doing.’”
9. Young Guru Convinced Jay-Z To Make Blueprint 2 A Double Disc
Young Guru: “It wasn’t the same quality as The Blueprint. If I had not pushed this double album concept and just made it 12 songs, it would’ve been an incredible album. I had 25 records from Jay so I’m like, ‘We gotta do a double album.’
“Jay was like, ‘Nah, I don’t need no double album.’ I’m like, ‘Nah B, all the greats like 2Pac and Biggie did double disks. To put you in that league, [you have to do one.]
“It was a serious campaign. Me and Hip Hop were the ones that were seriously arguing [to do a double disc]. We look at Jay’s career from the outside, so we’re like in order to be on the same level as Big and Pac, [you have to do a double disc]. They both had double albums that were like perfection, especially Big’s.
“When you’re doing a double album, and you really only have 17 songs, you start to do filler records. Then we do songs like ‘As One.’ We should’ve never did that.
“We were close. That was really my fault. Hip Hop had a little bit to do with it too. It was a mistake, you learn from your mistakes. It was my bad. There’s gems on there but it has a lot of filler too.”
10. He Wanted To Be The President of Def Jam For “The Culture”
Young Guru: “I asked Jay if he really wanted to be the president of Def Jam. I knew him and his personality and I knew that job and what it would take. Do you really want that headache?
“There are certain jobs that I look at like, ‘This is cool but it’s not for me.’ I work close to the shit that they do as managers, calling people and booking hotels. I don’t want to do that shit. It’s not for me. It’s not my thing to have meetings all day.
“Jay said, [he wanted to be the president] because of what that meant for the culture. It was a good look for him. I understand it from the point of ‘I went from being an artist to the president.’ It’s a great stat.”
11. L.A. Reid Forced Him To Rush Kingdom Come
[Ed. note—According to Guru, Def Jam had no releases in first quarter of 2006, followed by huge push in second quarter. After a number of albums flopped because of illegal downloading, which they refused to aknowledge, the company was in dire shape. Coupled with that was the fact the label no longer had big stars like DMX moving units for them, so the situation worsened.]
Young Guru:“Now, everything rides on this Jay-Z album. Jay goes on a world tour and goes to Africa to do his Water for Life thing. He’s doing all this stuff and L.A. Reid is looking at me, like, ‘We need the Jay album by the end of the year.’
“I’m like, ‘We’re not ready. I have some songs but it’s not done and he’s in Africa.’ They’re like ‘If this shit doesn’t come out, people are getting fired. I can’t pay my bills, this record has to come out at this time.’
“I’m begging, ‘Can I please push this back? He’s in Africa’ and they’re like, ‘Alright get on a plane.’ I ended up meeting Jay in Taipei, Taiwan and we didn’t really get to record until we got to Australia. But it’s like, you’re in the middle of a world tour doing soccer arenas that hold 60,000, to 100,000 people.
“He’s doing a show with 70,000 people and then I’m asking him to go to the studio right after that; his voice is gone. We’re in a foreign place trying to catch a vibe so it’s like double work. Not only did you have to memorize and do a two-hour show, now I’m asking you to be creative. This is why you get Kingdom Come.”
12. He’s Aware of His Inconsistent Albums
Young Guru: “There’s a line on ‘Addicted To The Game’ where Jay says, ‘Sorta like a Rubik's Cube is/Every albums' a color/But I fuck up the other/Color,’ meaning he would put out this incredible album and the next one would be cool. We were kind of going in that pattern for a while.
“You get Hard Knock and then you get Dynasty, which is not Hard Knock but it’s not wack. Then you get a Blueprint which is immaculate, and then a Blueprint 2. Then you come back again with Black Album but then we give you Kingdom Come.. So it’s like, I fuck up the other color. [Laughs.] That’s what that line means.”
13. It Was Kanye’s Idea To Do “D.O.A.”
Young Guru: “[While recording Blueprint 3, we were in the studio talking] and that turned out to be a two-hour conversation about what’s going on in hip-hop and what we need to be doing. Soulja Boy’s record was popping at the time. He becomes the antithesis to what we’re talking about, so we’re referencing him. We’re like saying Soulja Boy is wack but we’re like, ‘Jay is 40. This is what’s going on in hip-hop right now. We can’t do this.’
“That’s how ‘D.O.A.’ came about because Kanye was getting on his rant. People think Jay did that, but Kanye was the person that told him to do that. Kanye was like, ‘No, Jay, you’re 40-something, you need to be the anti to all this other shit that’s going on. You need to be like, ‘No, fuck Auto-Tune and all of that.’”
14. He Purposefully Fell Back On Watch The Throne
Young Guru: “Watch the Throne, that was Jay’s way of going, ‘Here, here’s the whole project for you to do. I’m gonna fall back and just interject my lines and here and there.’ The concept of that album was wholly directed by Kanye. That’s probably the first time that Jay ever did that but it was on purpose.
“Jay has been wanting to put people out, like, ‘Here, I’m giving you your start.’ But he’s not gonna do the groundwork for you, he’s not gonna run around and make the meetings for you. You’re gonna have to do all that yourself.
“Kanye was the first person that took it, ran with it, and it’s outside of Jay. He loves that so it’s a thing of where now we can both share this responsibility of being hot.
“With Watch the Throne, Kanye put his foot in it. He definitely brought a new style, pushed Jay in terms of styling and where they wanted to go. I think he also just hit the nail on the head by accepting tracks from outside producers that he found was hot.
“Between that and the visual presentation—Kanye is super visual, so having the two stages with the things rising up and down and the lights is Kanye’s vision. When it came to the tour, Jay was like, ‘Nah Guru, let they camp do it.’
“I think that’s why Jay allowed him to do that—and it also allows him to fall back a little bit and have a baby. [Laughs.]”
15. Jay's Already Working On His Next Album...
Young Guru: “There are maybe four songs so far and most of them are spill over. I don’t wanna say spill-over like they’re throw-aways from Watch The Throne. It’s an incredible beat coming on and Jay being like, ‘No that’s for my album. Hold that one, it’s for me.’ So the ones that were made so far, the beats were made during the Watch The Throne time.
“Now we’re adding on to it, but we haven’t gone back in. We had all this touring stuff. It was the end of the year and we were doing shows. Then the baby came. We literally went in to do the song for Blue Ivy and he hasn’t been back since. He’s definitely enjoying daddy mode right now.”

That shit sounds like some sort of weird gay sex fantasy. You're on my dick, you came from my dick... What?
Watched the Fuse stream of 50 Cent performing Get Rich or Die Tryin from SXSW last night. It was pretty damn good, that album has actually better than one would think. I really love it. Wish Fif would come out with something similar, you can tell he was trying on that The Big 10 mixtape (which was actually decent) but the random guest spots and inconsistency held it down. Even The Massacre had a ton of gems. "Ski Mask Way" is probably my favorite song from him, that break-down in the beat towards the end gets me every time :whoa:
Bert - did your Gambino show get rescheduled or am I late and you've already heard about his injury? The one here was supposed to be March 20th and sold out. I didn't see that coming at all so I'm hoping some tickets get freed up from refunds/exchanges now that it's pushed back to June.
I agree that the Wiz mixtape is really good. Maybe my favorite project from him yet. Some of those beats, wow. "Mia Wallace" just screams early morning session. Also loving "My Favorite Song", "Number 16", "TAP", even the lazy Frank Ocean sample on "The Cruise" is dope. Lyrically it's standard stuff from Wiz but it's still fun.
Other really good stuff out...
Big KRIT (Fro-- Boring?! I dunno man.. did you give his new one a good listen? I think the guy is making some pretty incredible music. Songs like "Yesterday" and "Insomnia" on the new project are top notch, better than stuff most other rappers are making right now in my opinion.
Action Bronson - Blue Chips (free mixtape)... go get this if you don't have it. Just do it. It's incredible.
The new Odd Future vol. 2 tape. What a way to come back. I had played all their other stuff to death and was starting to wonder if they'd be able to come back strong, and this answered my questions. Not much has changed, if you didn't like them before, you probably won't like this... but the production is as awesome as ever. Sounds like Goblin on acid. And if you haven't already heard, Earl Sweatshirt makes a return with a crazy verse on the final track.

I honestly hate that all artists in the live lounge have to do a cover of something not in their genre. It almost always ends in some abysmal sounding parody of a popular song at that time. Why not just let the acts play what the fuck they want, I pretty much hate all cover versions and I despise Katy perry's music, so maybe a bit of bias in my opinion but it's still very shite!

DISCUSSION POINT:
What converted you to hip hop? How old were you and what artists/songs/albums was it?
For me it was:
1997 (age 11) Bad Boy Records. Hypnotize/Mo Money Mo Problems/Feel So Good/All About the Benjamins/Victory
Then in 1998 Vol 2 Hard Knock Life and It's Dark and Hell's Hot.
after that it was hip hop 4 life for me.
u?
Stringer Bell

Pretty much the same, Fro
The first actual rap CD I ever bought was the Coolio Gangsta's Paradise album. I thought that single was the coolest thing ever when I was a kid. At first I was into R&B, stuff like Brandy and Soul 4 Real, then gravitated towards hip-hop. So yeah, started with Coolio... this was right when he was blowing up, so around 1995ish.. I was about 8 years old.
Then at some point I saw the 2pac f/ Dre - California Love video and it BLEW ME AWAY. Even now, it's a pretty cool video compared to a lot of the trash we've seen. And the song, man, I had never heard anything like it. Not too far after this I somehow coerced my parents into buying me the All Eyez on Me double disc CD. Can't remember how I got it, but that's beside the point. Shit was hard!
From there, the shiny suit era came in and took over the game. Obviously, being a youngin, I ate it up. It was Puff Daddy everything, every day, all day. I had every damn CD single they put out as a crew. I vividly remember hunting down the "It's All About the Benjamins" remix maxi single just to get the Foo Fighters rock remix. Man, the times before mp3s were crazy. Somehow I lagged in picking up Life After Death, but I definitely had all the singles -- Hynotize, Mo Money, Sky's The Limit. And all the Ma$e shit too. No Way Out and Harlem World were classics, and are surprisingly still pretty decent to this very day.
Definitely was ALL OVER DMX It's Dark and Hell Is Hot. My birthday is on May 21st, and I remember it came out right around my birthday that year because I asked for it as a present. Also, I remember the Hard Knock Life album really well because it dropped on the same day as other great albums -- Outkast Aquemini and A Tribe Called Quest the Love Movement. I can't remember which I got first, I think it was Jay because his singles were smashing at the time, but Outkast and Tribe followed soon after.
Also was really huge into NO LIMIT RECORDS and their awesome, gaudy album covers. I remember eating up almost everything they did -- from Master P to C-Murder to Silkk The Shocker. When Snoop Dogg joined the label it was a really big deal to me and my friends.
Somewhere along the line, I discovered the Rawkus stuff that was bubbling right before 2000. The Soundbombing compilations, the Mos Def solo, Black Star album, and Pharoahe Monch albums all really changed the way I looked at hip-hop. Even at a young age (I was about 12-13 at the time), these records shaped my taste and help to define a big part of what I enjoy nowadays.
SORRY FOR THE LENGTH! Awesome question

To be totally honest though, while it was Biggie/Puff/Mase/Jay/DMX that got me into hip hop on a real level in 97-98, I did fuck around with it a little even before then on more of kiddie/poser level. The first two hip hop albums I owned were:

I think the absolute best case scenario is that it does come out and while not as good as 2001 (which is as close to perfect as a hip hop album has ever gotten IMO), it's still bumpin and his fans love it and it's better than 95% of commercial rap these days. If it does come out, I'll buy it on release date without listening to the leak because I'm sure it'll at least bump like crazy in the whip. He won't release it if it's not great which is why he's taken so long and why it'll likely never drop. Imagine the features he's probably already got recorded tho. Shit he can get anyone he wants. You know Kendrick, Em and Snoop are on it. But think of the people he's worked with in recent years - Nas, Jay, Ice Cube, Raekwon. I don't see any way it would be wack, even though Dre has clearly declined as a producer. He can always just get beats from other people (like he did for Kush, which was an excellent first single btw).

Oh and I just got a chance to listen to The Recipe. I dig it. It's chill, which is a good thing. Kendrick over a How We Do type beat wouldn't sound right, so I'm glad they didn't force something like that. Dre sounds good rapping Kendrick's lyrics. Dre's a chameleon nowadays and he sounds really different on this song, but it works well here (unlike on Game's album). Kendrick doesn't murder it like I hoped he would, but it's a good song.

Action Bronson has quickly become my favorite rapper out right now. Dude is just super entertaining. Still have Dr Lecter on repeat, Well Done is a banger, and his new one, Blue Chips, gets better every day, it's like I have a new favorite song all the time. Dude is killing it. Can't wait for his project with Alchemist.

Hi guys, why is all hip-hop seemingly crap now? I used to fucking inhale it on a daily basis and probably added 50 new tracks to my iTunes a week, now I'm lucky if I add two or three...I still try to engage, and regularly go on mad sprees downloading every album and mixtape from anyone I've even heard of, let alone like...am I just looking in the wrong direction? All I want is some good, real production without all the synths and rock-pop drum loops that are so popular now, and a voice that sounds good and ideally is saying something relevant. Am I just out of touch?

Hip hop is definitely in decline and I blame the internet. Where a rapper used to get a buzz going on the streets, now he does so on YouTube and the blogosphere, so the direction of the music is aimed to entice that audience.

Which definitely makes the name of their album stick out more.
I'm trying to be negative, thinking they're stacking this album to cover up just how terrible 95% of their albums since Milenko have been, trying to have one last giant album before going back to making poop dick Tempest-level records. But I'm actually surprisingly interested in this album even more due to the collabos. Kreayshawn? Durst-who ICP, Twiztid, and others on this album have heavily shit on in the past, Color Me Badd, those 3 collabs right there are enough to keep me interested. Everyone else they've pretty much already worked with or I could care less about i.e. Hopsin, Willie D, Lil Wyte.
I'm more interested in the A-Roc and Arctor "Surviving The Machine" album coming out this month.

They can keep that shit if I buy it, only like 4 songs on that shit even sound worth listening to. I'm just too much of an old school fan of ICP to get down on their experimentation with rock/pop music, I like WICKED clownz not this weird "Kid Rock made it big doing this shit let's try it cuz we've been on his dick since 1989" shit that started happening after Kid Rock blew up with his Devil W/o a Cause album (talking Jeckel Bros. till present day).
Riddlebox homie, they need to make an album even if it's just 5-6 songs, in that style without the weird singing shit lol. I just haven't been a huge fan of their work in the last 10 years as opposed to the 90's. Some of these tracks could blow me away but right now I'm actually more dissapointed some of these collabs are happening on the cover aspect instead of the real album.

For me it's almost the same with Esham, I loved his stuff in the 90's but again, he saw Kid Rock blow up and wanted to try to be more mainstream as well and start rapping titty bar type raps and hasn't really produced anything that I'm like "Yeah this shit is on par with KKKill The Fetus" or Natas' "doubelivngod" I like the darker stuff and while ICP has tried to maintain some of that old school I just think I'm too much of a fan of what I liked back in the day that what they do now is just too hard to get into. I mean, it seems like their skills have somewhat fallen the fuck off, 2 Dope can barely stay on point and Violent J basically sounding like he's listened to wayyyy too much Butthole Surfers.
The funny thing is, that Bang Boom Pow is a pretty good record. Mike E. Clark and ICP=fire. I dug it a lot, even snatched up some crazy 3 disc set for $15 at Best Buy last year they put out after the original was released.

RIP. Just heard about this a fewminutes ago. Fucking sad, he couldn't even attend the Beasties induction into the R & R Hall of Fame due to being so sick, but I never thought it was this bad though. Seriously, the Beasties are so influential in music people don't even realize it most of the time. Just a great band, did whatever the fuck they wanted, and didn't sell out to the mainstream.
The ONE THING I always thought was strange though was how they wanted to go back and edit out all the curse words from their albums. Whether they actually did or not I don't know, but their beliefs and progression in life definitely had a part in that and really everything they did as a group. The fact the dude was only 47 is just mind boggling considering how they put out their first record in the early 80's, young ass party animals.
You can thank these dudes for ICP's Faygo attacks, Beasties used to spray the crowd with 40's, that would've been nice!

"Daughters" is meh. Don't get me wrong, I love the content and appreciate the fact he's doing something totally different than what's hot (as always), but it's just not what I want to hear from Nas, especially as a single. I'm sure dudes with kids, especially daughters, will love it, and I guess at this point a lot of guys who grew up on Nas may likely have kids, but I don't and I can't get down with it. Twiztid‘s new album, “Abominations”, will be released on October 23rd!
Guests so far include Royce Da 5’9″, Blaze Ya Dead Homie, Krizz Kaliko, Rittz, Yelawolf, and Glasses Malone!
Guests who were close to making it onto the album but couldn’t make it work in time are Duran Duran and Shawn from Seether.
Fright Fest will be extended to 1 week this year. They have no idea what cities they will play, but it will either go North, South, East, or West. That means that whatever direction they start in, they can’t divert from. So you won’t see Fright Fest in Houston and Worcester. Hopefully we’ll get more info on that soon!
There will be an “Abominations” Tour at or around the release date of the album! So if you don’t make it to a Fright Fest show, then they WILL be making it to a city near you!
Fuck some Royce and Yelawolf.

Yelawolf and MGK should die in a horrible bus crash while on tour together. Royce on the Twiztid album, I'm not negative on that one as opposed to some corny dude like Yelawolf. At least Royce is a real dude with an OG sound, Yelawolf is Asher Roth with some tats.
I just don't think Twiztid has a good reputation with collabs with really anyone. None of their songs where they jump on someone's shit other than the older stuff with ICP has been a GREAT SONG. Maybe a 2 1/2 stars out of 5 stars song but man, whenever they rip on someone else's shit it feels half-assed. Duran Duran? Yeah.

This is the best non-psy collab they have ever done imo. Even though the Dayton Fam signed with HH a few years later.

Both versions of that song are fuckin dope, it's one of the rare joints that Twiztid's collabed with someone and it came out soundin sick. I also like the joint with ROC, but I don't really consider that shit collabs as opposed to House Of Krazees/Sam Hein Witch Killaz stuff.
Twiztid had some good shit with 36 Mafia, some of the older ICP collabs they did were sick, Dark Lotus, not really collabs but that first record was sick on Twiztid's part. But then it's like you put on Green Book and it's like "Yikes, how did collabs with E-40, Tech, and Esham come out so whack?"

Word. ATCQ and Pharcyde are both underrated. They paved the way for a bunch of alternative rap groups.

Ayo whattup you now in the presence of Big Ghost Almighty aka the illustrious Hands of Zeus aka Cocaine Biceps aka Phantom Raviolis or the legendary Galaxy Knuckles namsayin. Ayo son the god was jus doin his thing namsayin...kickin back at the crib gettin fed grapes by two amazon broads on my 40 foot bed nahmean. The god had the Donny Hathaway joints playin...n we was pourin out mad rozay n watchin the sun come up over the hills n whatever. So I throw on my robe so I can step out onto the balcony n get some fresh air n shit...n all a sudden the clouds started swirlin n shit namsayin...n yo the clouds parted n a golden dragon swept down from the heavens n shit. So Im reachin for my burner like yo some shit bout to pop off or whatever...but I left my shit inside on the table namsayin. So I do a somersault towards the door to grab the ratchet but like... the muthafuckin dragon starts blowin out some flames n shit onto the floor nahmean. And then I seen this flash n a glowin ball (pause) emerged from the flash n it came down n landed right in front of the gods toes nahmean. Then there was a puff of smoke n all I seen was this ipod...wasnt even the Touch joint tho...jussa muthafuckin Nano...the purple joint. So I look up n the dragon disappeared n shit. So Im ponderin the situation namsayin...like takin into consideration what had jus took place nahmean. And I picked the ipod up n the shit was hotter than a muthafucka. I start checkin to see whats on the muthafucka n wasnt no track names or nothin listed...jussa playlist namsayin. So I push play to peep it n some laid back shit starts comin out the headphones. I still aint kno what the shit was...then I heard dude come in n start spittin some shit n I recognized the voice namsayin...so Im thinkin maybe this some ol unreleased type shit from the vaults. But then son start talmbout how he was reminiscin wit Questlove bout Whitney....so yo....basically the dragon hit me off witta exclusive joint. But yo...word is bond...I aint really care what the shit is bout. But theres one line on the muthafucka that was stuck in the gods head namsayin... "speak from your heart...n never compromise what you feel is real". Thats some truthful shit b. - Big Ghost

Insane Clown Posse has recorded a track with one of its heroes: Ice Cube. The legendary rapper contributes a verse to the remix of " Chris Benoit ," a song on ICP's next album "The Mighty Death Pop," which is due Aug. 14. ICP's Violent J says the group has been trying to get Cube on a song for more than a decade, since its 1999 album "The Amazing Jeckel Brothers." Cube, who shares billing on the track along with Houston rapper Scarface , has played ICP's Gathering of the Juggalos twice, but the collaboration marks the first time Cube has done a song with ICP. The "Chris Benoit" remix — the song is titled after the former professional wrestler who killed himself after murdering his wife and child in 2007 — is due on " Mike E. Clark 's Extra Pop Emporium," a bonus CD packaged with the "White Pop" version of "The Mighty Death Pop," one of three versions of the album. Other guests due on the "White Pop" set include the Geto Boys , Three 6 Mafia and Kreayshawn

Don't feel bad for never having interest in ICP. It's an acquired taste. Almost everything after Jeckyl Brothers is a waste of time, but I will always be fond of their old stuff.
There are better horrorcore rappers out there, though.

Ab-Soul does that a lot on his new album, actually all of the Black Hippy guys seem to do similar stuff (Schoolboy's "Nightmare on Figg St", almost every song on the new Ab-Soul). Nothing really new in hip-hop, just a way to show respect/pay tribute.
This is by far my favorite album of the year so far. Fucking incredible. More people need to be into this, I genuinely feel sorry for those who aren't.

It's not like 5 years ago when rap albums would leak months in advance. Nowadays they typically leak only about a week ahead of release. That said, I think there's a good chance Our House will be pushed back again anyway.

Here are some other records you should definitely check out
El-P - Fantastic Damage (his first solo album.. probably also his least accessible, but definitely incredible)
El-P - I'll Sleep When You're Dead (seems to be a lot of people's favorite -- features from Trent Reznor, Cat Power, The Mars Volta)
El-P - Cancer 4 Cure (newest)
Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus (technically his debut.. his old group, classic underground stuff)
Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein (a lot of people would probably call this his best work production wise)
