I remember how pissed Esham and Twiztid were that he was always hanging around ICP, and then low and behold he gets signed to Psychopathic....Straight up, Vanilla Ice is one of the coolest famous people and makes no bones that what he did back in the day was a young kid getting millions thrown in his face. I wouldn't be surprised if this dude and Eminem did some shit in their 40's together.

It was announced on the Facebook accounts of Psychopathic and Hatchet House that V-Ice signed a deal, but I don't know. Dude just put out a CD on another label a few months ago.

He's actually been one of the most entertaining rappers this year in my opinion. Certainly more so than someone like paint-by-numbers Weezy and his Carter 4 bomb.
The Lock Out mixtape with French Montana has been in crazy rotation these past two weeks.
I mean, how can you not love a rapper that says..

I got no beef with Waka. He doesn't go around saying he's the best or anything like Wayne and he's not blatantly satanic like Jay-Z.

The irony is ICP was never really MAINSTREAM.
But that was despite their best efforts to go mainstream. They tried, and failed many a time. J even apologised for it in a half hearted shitty way, which lost them many a fan. Bizarr/Bizzar, and that thing they done..fuck i cant remember the name of it, project leandra or something totally not like that, i cant remember the fucking name.
edit: this was it,
OG Juggalos Club - The mighty day of Lienda
Back when Bizzar Bizaar was released, ICP were selling their souls to get “Let’s Go All The Way” on MTV’s TRL. Sorry, it’s true. Hate it if you want, but they tried their damndest to sell out. While trying to convince the juggalos to go vote, many juggalos questioned that, if ICP blew up and got famous, how would they still treat their original down since day-1 fanbase that was around before the fame. The answer to that was the OG Juggalos Club, posted on ICP.com. Basically, you could sign up before the TRL shit and then whenever ICP got big and famous, they’d give out fresh benefits like free merch and backstage passes to the juggalos on the OG Juggalos list, that way they wouldn’t get lost in the shuffle of all the new fans.
So what happened to it? Well, when the whole thing was over, as a result of the sell-out attempt, ICP ended up losing probably half their fuckin’ fanbase. So there were no new juggalos and not a whole lot of OG ones left either. So I’d assume this shit got scrapped and to this day, the TRL-debacle probably stands as one of ICP’s biggest mistakes.
Anyway, i still listen to them now, but i'll be the first to admit that they arent what they were, the albums now arent a patch on the older stuff, and Twiztid, who I loved from HOK to their early years on Psy are pretty fucking rubbish now (and i say that regrettably, as Freekshow and mostastless are two of my favourite albums recorded on psy).
Like i say, their fans are loyal and you have to give them credit for this sub-culture they have created. They will make plenty of money because they have a set of fans that will buy whatever they release. I should know because of all the shit i have of theres (which i'm looking to sell DVDA, if you're interested).

A lot of those albums haven't even been announced or just definitely won't drop this year Ringer, but yeah I'm hyped for GOOD Music, Kendrick on Aftermath and Black Star. Was it you who said 2011 had a lot of good releases but very few if any real classics? If so, I agree, which is why I'm having a lot of trouble ranking them. But here goes.
Fro's top 10 albums of 2011:
1. Watch the Throne
2. Section.80
3. Undun
4. Take Care (yeah I said it)
5. Hell: The Sequel
6. Camp
7. The Dreamer/The Believer
8. The Greatest Story Never Told
9. Shaolin vs Wu-Tang
10. Cole World

I don't look at it as them trying to sell out. It was more of a publicity stunt. A genius one at that. Juggalos rigging up programs to vote hundreds of times to get Lets Go All The Way to #1 on TRL was amazing. I had a great time participating and I loved seeing the people outside being taken over by "painted up freaks." MTV were bitches for having security remove them. J should have told the juggalos to shut down Time Square and to start a riot. They have caused multiple riots in Detroit and shut the city down once. You know you got power when you have Disney executives scared that your fans are gonna burn Disney World to the ground.

Yeah I figured you didn't make it, it's just funny how these lists pop up every year and how many of them don't materialize. This is probably the first one since 2004 that didn't have Detox on it. Anyway I'd say Kendrick/Cole and WTT2 have zero chance, and I wouldn't count on either of them ever coming out, unless maybe the former is just a mixtape. Also maybe I've missed some recent news on it but Jay E is fucking 35 years old and has never released an album yet, so I'm not betting on that one either.
And I like B.o.B. - he's like a good version of Cudi.
Ringo
January 3rd, 2012, 8:11 PM
Well yeah, the Jay E fiasco is like the new Detox. Getting pretty silly now but he's still signed to Roc Nation and we can keep on hoping.
There's some rumours, maybes, probables and dead certs on that list, but regardless I think there's plenty to look forward to in Hip-Hop in 2012.
Another to add is the MadGibbs full length, which I believe has been confirmed. :hyper:

Ha, it's funny you brought that up because they also did something called "Ray Day" which was the concept that on a particular day ICP wanted all the juggalos to go out and not only buy copies of Bizzar/Bizaar for themselves but to a fellow broke juggalo or possibly someone who's never heard of ICP. The downside was while it was a cool thing, ICP and co. lied about the actual album sales and when the real numbers came out a lot of fans were pissed that they were lied to.
Useless trivia but "Ray Day" was an idea conjured up by a friend of mine here in Des Moines named Ray Chapin who's brother Heavy Clown used to do internet ICP video games back in 1999-2001 for sites like Rydas.com and RealJuggalos.com. Ray and his brother were part of "Seeds of the Lotus" which were all the major fansites' members obligated to spread the word of the "dark carnival" via internet.
I'll be honest I've only been sour on a handful of Twiztid albums and usually it's just a handful of songs.
What kind of stuff you lookin to unload, homie?

You know you got power when you have Disney executives scared that your fans are gonna burn Disney World to the ground.
It was a solid attempt on getting them more exposure and for a time it worked. Hell, I think I've seen more ICP merch in stores the last 10 years than I did in the 90's when it's pretty much universal that their music was better then than it became.
A big problem was the loss of Mike E. Clark. Violent J must've had a super hard on for Ministry, letting Mars and Mike Puwal come in and basically alter their existence. They lost the custom sound when Mike left and even Mike says that he had a serious issue with the direction they wanted to go. Keep in mind, we're talking about Violent J, the guy who grew up wanting to be the next Prince or Michael Jackson as opposed to a homicidal 6'4" 345lbs. killer clown. Go listen to the "intelligence and violence" tape, yikes!
What I never understood about ICP is why the change? I started taking a step back from really digging them when the first video for Amazing Jeckel Bros. was that stupid Love Song pt. 2 or whatever it was called. How did they go from the singles off Milenko to the singles they've used in all future albums? Reminds me of Esham's change in direction which was right around the same time and he's barely putting out anything worth a damn these days as well.
It's pretty obvious that Kid Rock's success was a driving factor in ICP's sound changing if you ask me. Hell I remember Monoxide from Twiztid saying that they heard some Limp Bizkit album and were like "Fuck that shit we can do that too!" So idk, was ICP trying to be mainstream or were they just changing their sound because they wanted to and it was just conicidental? I mean look @ their shit nowadays, they haven't really tried to get back to the older sound even with Mike Clark back in the mix. It's hit or miss really.

I honestly have only heard 2 ICP albums in full since that album because it put such a shitty taste in my mouth that was already brewing since Jeckel Bros. and that Another Love Song video. It's like for some reason after 2000, ICP and Esham decided to take their good ideas and flush them down the toilet because Eminem and Kid Rock blew up and they didn't.
After Clark left everything went downhill, even their flows suck ass now because Clark was helping them write half that shit that got them so popular in the first place. Now he's back, but the shit still has that corny wannabe acid rap approach that they can't pull off.

My nigga said speak on it, throw a slow tempo beat on it
He said real Hip Hop gon' feed off it
Call in sick to the beef meat market
Come back with a peace offerin'
No man is an island, no man is sovereign
Any artist can turn a garden to a desert
But can they turn a desert to a garden?
These haters hatin' my bars, they playin' their part
The illest alive, it ain't my fault, where do I start?
My words always go unheard, my voice is ignored
No body will ever understand 10,000 bars,
I don't even understand it myself
Seven billion people on the planet,
Not one understands how I've felt
I feel like Sophia Stewart, the male oracle of rap music
I've been through unplorable abuses
Lemme explain something called mechanical royalty
A certain amount of albums get pressed up quarterly
For every unit that's pressed they owe me a dollar
Father Author, Poor Pauper they call me a ??Swasta??
On the corner drinkin' Goldschläger
It's not something that I'm proud of
The business is corrupt and dishonest
It's a law not a promise
Distributors supposed to pay each artist $1 per album per project
After mechanical royalty is confirmed,
Copyright infringement is the next lesson to learn
The writer is the copyright holder, in my case I'm the owner
Without a signature you're not supposed to sell my music
But they sold it, a quarter million dollar fine ?????
How many songs you wrote 'Bus?
I wrote 1,500 ASCAP don't lie about the numbers
But my account got shut down
I got no referral from the biggest collection agency in the world
Here we go boys and girls, they took everything from me
I wondered if it's cause I'm ugly, or unlucky
I said fuck you crooks, you stole my money
Keep it gully, they keep playin' courtroom rugby
I feel like God don't love me,
'Cause not one person on the planet stepped up to represent me
And now here I am talking to you
But not really though cause I know ?????
So now I'm sendin' a message as far as it can go
In the hope that it can maybe reach an uncorrupt soul
Somewhere over the rainbow, I go through pain they'll never know
That's why I'm so miserable, yo
Turn into the lyrical hulk, jump the gate, grab you by the throat
I should break your fuckin' neck 'cause I'm broke
But I ain't really on it like that
I'm so important to rap, one day I'll get a lawyer to do that
For now evil wins, overwhelming the people with sin
The modern day Djinn with medieval grins
The Jim Baker jungle gym, drink gin then jump into him
Then jump into them then jump back to Jim
I don't want no money, I just want justice
But now a days no one gives a fuck so fuck it
You gotta love it, big business big budget
Harry Fox hates Hip Hop, I'm goin' public
This is a cold ass world we live in.

I actually really like Shangrila, although i remember the first time i heard it, i hated it.
Worst albums have to be Bizaar/Bizzar which were half hearted, and lazy, that tried to appeal to a wider audience and alienated their original fans.
It's weird, because they actually became better rappers, and the production become much better. But i do miss the raw, roughness of shit from CoC or Ringmaster.
Enjoying that Rozay mix, though like most RR stuff, i don't think i'll be listening to it in more than 3 weeks, bar 1 or 2 songs.

OK damn. So I've been at work the past two days and didn't really get to listen to the Ross mixtape, just the first half or so. From what I heard it's dope, the usual ignorant mixtape Ross shit that you can't help but enjoy. But, just watched the Stay Schemin video...
Those Drake bars were HARD! He has this shitty look on his face in the video too, now I want to hear this battle more than ever.. it's time for someone to call out names..
BTW, for the record... Xzibit > Ludacris. Maybe not if you break them down as technical rappers, but when it comes to making albums, yeah, X takes it. His first two albums are CLASSICS, some people clearly have not heard them. Ludacris is a great emcee and his first two albums were also fun, but he's inconsistent as fuck and has a tendency to put out some real duds. Don't judge Xzibit for his TV show stuff, his music has always been raw.

This video was so hard.. I remember I used to see it on BET all the time when I was young and hunted down the CD single.. I wasn't quite ready to drop the nearly $20 that albums used to cost, I probably needed some new Magic cards or something. lol Xzibit
Luda is the man.
:dunce:
Luda hits a great punchline and is probably at his best as a show-stealer in those big collabo remixes that tend to come out every once in a while...but his albums have always been hit and miss. That's not to say I don't like him, and he is certainly the good end of the pop-rap spectrum, but he doesn't touch Xzibit. He makes good club music but it's pretty shallow stuff beyond the punchlines. The only real classic track he's made IMO is "MVP", and even that is partly because of the Premo beat.
Xzibit actually had a similar problem since he got huge off the back of the Shady/Aftermath explosion, with poppier releases that didn't really suit his style, but as Stringer said his first two albums are real classics, with At The Speed Of Life possibly among my top ten of all time. On ATSOL alone there are a good six or seven tracks better than anything Luda ever released - Eyes May Shine, The Foundation, Carry The Weight, Paparazzi, Bird's Eye View, Enemies And Friends, At The Speed Of Life...40 Dayz is more of a solid album rather than one that has any real standout classics but it's still a great CD, will have to listen to it again when I get home as it's been a while.
I feel a bit bad cunting Luda because he is one of the most entertaining around, I just don't think he's made good albums...the number of quality collaborations he has dropped the best verse on is crazy though:
-I'm So Hood
-All I Do Is Win
-Made You Look (if anyone's seen the live version of this in NYC, Luda's verse just smashes the audience to bits, I'll see if I can find a video on Youtube as it's incredible)
-Welcome To My Hood
-Country Shit
-Cannon
All great tracks with top artists and IMO he went hardest on all of them. Made You Look in particular is three rappers on top of their games and Luda still stands above both Nas and Jada (even if Jada has the best line, "copped your shit, now I break weed up on it" :D)
That said - fuck Luda, Xzibit is a destroyer.

I don't even see how my posts saying Mitch shouldn't be mod (which he shouldn't one mod is more than enough for the tavern) in the thread about Mitch being made mod is relevant to hip hop discussion at all.
Schoolboy Q is generic swag rap. It has nothing to do with what "era" I'm from, I listen to Tech N9ne and Childish Gambino more than I listen to anyone else. I also have no idea what you're on about with a "sense of entitlement", I don't like swag rappers with no skill like lil b, wocka flocka, gucci mane, starlito, schoolboy q, etc.

No idea what you mean by "generic swag rap" cause that is hardly how I'd describe Schoolboy Q. He and the other Black Hippy guys (mainly Kendrick Lamar) are actually putting out some of the most refreshing and original music right now, compared to all the other blog/new era rappers.
Did you listen to the album? Seriously. The production is unique and doesn't sound like many other records. I wouldn't say he's the best lyricist or anything, but he can more than hold his own and the last thing I would call him is generic.

Sad story for anyone that knows/cares.
I used to play football with a kid called Kevin Georgiou when I was about 10 or 11. Nice lad, a bit mouthy but his heart was in the right place. He was quite easily led though and hung around with a few dickheads.
Anyway, fast forward 15 years or so and I've just found out he is the semi-famous UK rapper K Koke, which is weird because I've been listening to him and quite enjoying his stuff for a good few years without ever seeing his face. But I happened upon a news story which contained a photo of him, and I instantly recognised as my old mate - a quick look on Google for his real name confirmed it was the same lad.
This was the article:
http://www.kilburntimes.co.uk/news/stonebridge_rapper_k_koke_charged_with_harlesden_s hooting_1_857558
So sad. Even sadder because he is a talented lad and had just signed a record deal with Roc Nation and would have been working with Jay-Z and other artists.
There's a strong movement suggesting that the police have fitted him up and they have no evidence to support their case, but the content of his lyrics is going to work strongly against him, it is all, and I mean almost literally ALL, about guns and violence. Which again is a shame because he is good at what he does - his rhymes are intelligently written even if the content is dubious, and he has a nice flow, with a DMX-esque delivery.
‪K KOKE Fire in the Booth Part 1 (1XTRA)‬‏ - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqgtYHlKhqA)
‪K Koke - Are You Alone Fam‬‏ - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRCTWBqoxls)
Genuinely a bit gutted, though maybe that's a bit sentimental as I remember him as a nice kid.
Update on this - in November last year Koke was acquitted of all charges and since his release he has been going the fuck in on his new tracks. His lyrics are harder, his delivery harsher, the beats are fucking insane (check the bass on I'm Back, it will mess your brain)...this could really be his year. As I mentioned before he's signed to Roc Nation and was supposedly on the verge of big things before the arrest, so with that behind him and probably adding credibility to his violent style, it could be a huge year for him. He SHOULD be borderline unsellable as a commercial artist but it seems not.

I think I just have a general dislike for modern hip-hop, or more specifically the production fashions of this era.. So many new albums that are universally acclaimed just leave me cold :dunno: I'm choosing my words carefully because it's very easy to come across like a Look Back Bore (c. Mark E. Smith) who is trying to look cool by ignoring new trends etc and goes on about the good old days all the time..it's honestly not that - I just genuinely find very little new hip-hop that I enjoy.

During Blu and Exile’s show the other night in San Francisco, an upset fan jumped on stage to express his disappointment in Blu’s performance. And based off the description of the YouTube clip, he wasn’t the only one who had these thoughts..
While I don’t agree with the fan jumping on stage, I think the dude was right with Blu putting on a weak show. He was wasted, forgetting his lines, mumbling, and literally leaning on the mic stand for balance in the corner the entire show. Such a shame when the dude is obviously so talented, getting that trashed where he can’t put on a decent show.

Surprisingly dope track from Asher Roth, and it never hurts to have Action Bronson around. Asher really killed himself with the College single, the guy is talented and has an ear for beats. More stuff like this please.
Smoke DZA - 4 Loko Remix ft. A Rocky, A Twelvy, Danny Brown, Freeway, and Killa Kyleon - YouTube
Big ol fuck-off posse cut. Love it, especially the random Freeway appearance. Danny Brown kills.
French Montana & Waka Flocka Dat All - YouTube
I don't care what anybody says, this is catchy as fuck and Waka Flocka is way more entertaining to me than someone like T.I. (who I find incredibly boring these days)... Don't sleep on this mixtape, especially for party/car music.
8Ball & MJG ft. Big K.R.I.T. - We Buy Gold (New Music February 2012) - YouTube
Sounds like vintage 8ball and MJG. Great stuff.
Action Bronson - Contemporary Man (Prod By Party Supplies) (Blue Chips) - YouTube
This one's great, Bronson does a Jackin 4 Beats over old 80s/rock songs. "The tool I got will loosen up your stool a lot, yeah the PP will make you poo-poo a lot"
Brand New Video School Boy Q feat A Rocky-Hands On The Wheel - YouTube
Speaking of Schoolboy Q, this one's dope. Liking the Kid Cudi sample, it's actually pretty unexpected and it works. Rocky's buzz is tremendous right now, almost scary like.
That'll do.

I've been listening to a bit of hip hop recently. Old stuff like Gang Starr and Jurassic 5. I also really like 2001 by Dr Dre - no idea if that is cool in hip hop circles or not.
So I am completely out the loop but based on all that someone suggest some songs for a playlist, cheers!

2001 is pretty much top to bottom unbelievable. I played the arse out of Forgot About Dre and What's The Difference to the extent that even now I find myself immediately bored of them if they come on randomly on my iTunes.
Still Dre is IMO one of the greatest commercial hip-hop tracks of all time (the way the first note comes in straight after the end of Fuck You is a real goosebumps moment), but beyond the obvious there are so many beats that are just pure filth - The Watcher, Xxxplosive, Big Egos, Murder Ink, Bang Bang, The Message...it's all fire. I never liked The Next Episode and the skits are even worse than the usual during that era but the consistent quality of the beats makes the whole album unbelievable.

BIG - Life After Death
Raekwon - Cuban Linx
Nas - Illmatic
Outkast - ATLiens (or Aquemini -- could change on any given day)
Kanye West - Dark Fantasy
I think that's what I'm going with for now.
These would round out the top 10
Cage - Hell's Winter
Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt
Wu Tang - 36 Chambers
Ghostface - Supreme Clientele
Clipse - Lord Willin

I guess I just enjoy lyricism more than repetition.

February 4th, 2012, 2:10 AM
You crazy jo. Danny Brown is a lyricist through and through. I dunno what you were listening to.
That specific song may not be "technically" lyrical, but that's because it's him experimenting with styles. It's his take on a UK grime track and I think it's pretty fucking decent. I guess we should wait for some UK heads to chime in.
But really. Now you've criticized both Schoolboy Q and Danny Brown as rappers. Which is fucking ridiculous because both of those guys are two of the best up and comers out right now. Seriously, you liked Carter 4 lyrically but don't like these guys? I don't get it at all. Maybe it's better that way.
And can I just put some more emphasis on how great the Schoolboy Q record is. My favorite album of 2012 so far. Close 2nd is the Gangrene album Vodka and Ayahuasca -- do not sleep!!!

I like a few of the songs off of Habits & Contradiction.
I like Sacrilegious, it reminds me a lot of Kid Cudi.
I also like Hands on The Wheel, the sample is nice and works well.
I don't understand why he echoes himself or makes little one word comments after a line on like every other song though. I'm sure other rappers do it, it's just way more noticeable for me on his songs.
When it comes to Danny Brown I don't understand why he has weird accents on some songs and sounds completely normal on others. The weird accent thing reminds me of how Gambino used to sound a lot.

 With Clipse, some days I even prefer Til The Cakset Drops, but there's just something about Lord Willin. I remember when I heard Grindin in high school I liked it but just felt it was really commercial, and their whole look in the video and everything. Little did I know I'd be coming back to that album 10 years later and having it blow my mind. It's so deep. Malice especially spits some really crazy shit. I love the Clipse.
2001 is definitely up there for me, too. Sounds just as good today as it did then.

I really recommend you go back and give Habits & Contradictions a thorough listen. I know what you mean about his ad-libs, they do get a little annoying.. I'm not saying he's the perfect rapper. But I really did sleep on what he was spitting, only because the production is so damn good. The first half of so of the album is damn near flawless IMO.
When you say accent, I assume you mean the high-pitched voice? I guess it is an acquired taste, but that's just his style, he likes to switch it up. I think it's unique. And still, even if you don't like his voice, that doesn't have anything to do with his lyrics. Dude's outrageously good....
It's the Adderall Admiral, writing holy macarel
Your bitch say my dick long like the strap on a satchel
I took me a capsule with no hassle
Now it's like I dip feathers of ink in a castle
A prodigy like bullets hit your left clavicle
No sweatsuits and paint the avenue
You have no Clue like toy stores without board games
But when I paint pictures I'm dipping brushes in war paint
I'm a mothafuckin' mothafucka
Fucking on your mother with two rubbers, I do fuck her
No cover ,just her booty on a pillow
Your bitch said my dick tastes like tropical fruit Skittles
I'm bumping Bill Withers, Swishers on Schwarzenegger
Matter fact, nah nigga they on Boa Constrictors, they'll choke a nigga
These niggas ain't rappers, they motherfuckin' characters
Caught your baby momma horny then I stuck a carrot in her
Then you made a salad with her, ate that shit for dinner
I don't want that skinny bitch look like that ho from Thinner
Swore she played soccer she was real good with headers
Had me yelling "Goal!" while I was sitting on the dresser
Give the bitch a hat trick, smoking on the cat piss
I keep the bitch wet, around you she's a cactus
I got them Penis Psalms for your Vagina Monologues
Love a feminist bitch, oh, they get my dick hard
So no apologies for all the misogyny
I just want your company to come and watch some porn with me
My oral orchestration causes manipulation
The way these hoes be chasing though I had the tongue of Satan
But I just gave 'em dick they more for conversation
Why you niggas tricking giving your obligation
You safe havens, I'm Wes Craven with X cravings
Fuck a bitch mouth until her fucking face cave in
Hidden cams in her house, I caught her masturbating
Extorted her for the cash, now your ass paying
You Captin Save-Them-Ass, nigga
I don't give a bitch shit but hard dick and liquor
So so nice to meet you, I hope that you're safe

my top five hip-hop albums...
1. my beautiful dark twisted fantasy by kanye west - without a doubt my number one hip-hop album of all time. this record transcends hip-hop for me, and is absolutely one of the greatest albums i've ever heard, of any genre. it's up there with highway 61 revisited and kind of blue, that's how much i love it. i haven't gone more than a week without listening to it since it came out, and it completely dominated my stereo and headphones for months when it was first released, with very little else ever getting played during that time. makes me so happy.
2. enter the wu-tang(36 chambers) by the wu-tang clan - almost 1b, as this is the album that made me love hip-hop and want to dive into it. i'd of course been more than aware of rap music before i listened to this, had actually been into some of the mainstream stuff that got played on MTV, specifically DMX and radioplay jay-z('party up' and 'big pimpin' dominated my summer of 2000, and i couldn't get enough), but once i heard the grimy as shit production and lyricism of the wu-tang, something changed. i loved the personalities and the word play(i smoke on the mic like smokin' joe fraizer, the hell raiser, raising hell with the flavor. i mean COME ON.). it was all so interesting, the world they created and lived within, that once i read up on them, and learned about RZA's five year plan and all that first swing of solo albums, i was a bonafide hip-hop head. thanks to the wu i got into biggie and nas. they helped open so many doors, in my head, about what hip-hop was and could be, in stark contrast to the party anthems of MTV rap.
3. the low end theory by a tribe called quest - another pivotal moment in my hip-hop fandom was finding a tribe called quest. i knew who busta rhymes was because of his freaky videos for 'woo hah!' and 'put your hands where my eyes can see,' so during my journey down the rabbit hole that is allmusic.com, i ended up seeing that he was a member of a collective called the native tongues. sounded intriguing, so i read up about them, and of course saw a lot about a tribe called quest, with their 'socially conscious jazz-infused hip-hop.' first time i'd heard anything described that way within the hip-hop, from my studies, so i was eager to hear what that involved. by this time, my love for jazz was being watered by miles davis and john coltrane, so i was interested to see how that translated into rap. now, their debut, people's instinctive travels... was the first record i bought of theirs and listened to. absolutely a great album, got me into the group well enough to want to explore the rest of their discography, but didn't completely wow me. this album, however, blew me away. big part of that is the distinct upping of phife dawg on this record. tip is tip and all, but phife really holds the records together. everything clicks on their album. the smooth, silky beats, the wonderful wordplay and trading off of phife and tip; everything. this record showed me a whole different side of hip-hop. where the wu-tang wasn't anything like the mainstream rap i had heard, they were still very much a violent, 'gangsta' collective. tribe wasn't ANYTHING like the wu, showing me yet another face of rap music, that it's not always about macho posturing, as much fun as that can be sometimes.
4. ready to die by the notorious BIG - now, as much as i love all the records above this, i honestly don't love EVERYTHING those groups have put out. there have been missteps or songs that i'm just 'meh' on, but the same can't be said about biggie(i'm just really counting the first two albums, since he obviously didn't have say on anything that came out after his death). the level of intensity, intelligence and consistency from this man during his time in the game is unbelievable, and for me, it's no better shown than on his debut album. he's fierce, hungry and never lets up. the first half of the album is utterly insane. everytime i listen, the rawness of 'things done changed' and 'gimme the loot' still resonates with me like i'm hearing them for the first time. it's hard to even wrap my head around. he embodies the struggle of being human, not necessarily just being a black human. the subjects he touches on are so vast; he can make you tear up and the next moment you're terrified of him. on a certain day, at a certain time, i may tell you that this album is the most perfect hip-hop album in the world. and to be honest, deep down, i probably really do think it is.
there always seems to be a rotating carousel at the number five spot. changes depending on my mood. so i'm just gonna give a handful of 'mentions' for the fifth spot.

black star by mos def and talib kweli

:dunno: Like I said this is just my favourite stuff, I have tons of Big L and LL Cool J that just isn't among my favourite 200 or so tracks...sadly a lot of older stuff like BDK, Kool Moe Dee and even Kool G Rap and KRS-One just leaves me a little cold; I can listen to it on occasion and enjoy it but it's not what I'd regularly listen to.
BTW the Ed Sheeran track is actually the instrumental for The A Team with a little-known UK rapper called Mikill Pane going over the top of it. And it's class.

I tore the arse out of B.O.B. when I first heard it and have never really liked it since. TBH Outkast don't do a huge amount for me bar a few great tracks (Rosa Parks especially but also ATLiens, Player's Ball and a couple others whose names escape me).
It's very easy to criticise that list and I appreciate that, but then the same could be said of anyone's list I would say. There's a lot of music that I appreciate, enjoy and respect, without necessarily classing it among my absolute favourite music. Those 200 tracks are ones that I would almost always be in the mood to listen to if they came on shuffle.

Well yeah I wasn't slating your choices its just true that it very much is a young person's music and frightens me as I don't know what I am supposed to listen to in 5 years time.
I stopped really getting interested in 'new' hip-hop with the astronomical rise of Lil' Wayne as my brain couldn't cope with why he was so popular and being mentioned in the same breath as some of the all time greats.

I am much the same as you, I spend far more time hunting out old gems (just recently got into Bumpy Knuckles and Jeru for example) than looking for new stuff.

DJ Danger Mouse - The Grey album (beatles/jay z mash up, though lacking D'Evils, which is awesome and makes me a bit sad inside). though i listened to this before The Black Album. switiching it up is always refreshing.
Deltron 3030, as Fro said. love the concept and it is just so fun.

Shavo speaking about AcHoZeN
We're remixing the album and adding some new artists. Rza and I appreciate ur patience. But like I said, this isn't just another Wu side project. It's got it's own life and soul. That's why we haven't just thrown it out there. I personally can't wait for all those interested to hear this crazy new style/genre of music. But there's just a lot going on with System, Wu and Rza right now. That's why I through a bunch of free tracks out there. We will all know when the time is right. I think this is the most long awaited album ever.

Why do most of the songs sound like they were recorded in a hotel bathroom? (not counting the intro) I do like call my nga (cut him like a pizza, have him singing like Aretha) but it sounds like they recorded it backstage at a concert because there's also this muffled bass for whatever reason. Ez sounds perfectly fine though. I don't get it.
I listened to Deltron3030 for the first time today and can see why so many people like that album. According to wikipedia the second album is dropping in May.
I revisted Blueprint 3 because I wanted to hear Run This Town and I like it way more now than I did before.

Blu's been releasing stuff like that for years now. Unmixed, low quality leaks followed by a mastered hard copy (or digital in some cases) further down the line. I forgot his whole explanation for it, but I'm used to it by now. These beats sound nice and dusty anyway, I kinda like it.

As Morrison and I have already attested to in here, the American tour was probably the best stadium hip hop set ever. So I highly recommend that you make it happen.
I say set instead of concert because it was just them, no opener, not even a DJ, but they played for about 2.5 hours. It was so immense. But tours that rolled deep like Up in Smoke or the Hard Knock Life Tour were probably better overall.

Can anyone recommend a good website that provides download links for new hip-hop tracks? The one I was using (something like www.ilovernb.com or similar gayness) no longer works.

Also, I have given Watch The Throne another try on three occasions and I still really don't see the fuss at all. That's My Bitch is a tune, and Otis, No Church In The Wild and Niggas In Paris are all decent...but fuck knows what the fuss is with this album and this tour.
MikeHunt
February 24th, 2012, 7:50 AM
It's kanye and jay-z on tour together. What sounds suit about that? Have you seen the set list Simon? The fuss is totally justified.
Ringo
February 24th, 2012, 7:50 AM
What fuss? General view of the WTT album seems to be that it was somewhat disappointing. Some real bangers on there, but I think a lot of people expected better.
And the fuss about the tour has a lot more to do with the spectacle of it all.
See Fro's post:
If anyone has a chance to go to one of the remaining 17 Watch the Throne shows, fucking go man. The show was incredible. 2 and a half hours of non-stop hip hop excellence. By the end of it I was physically exhausted. The set production is the best I've ever seen - tons of perfectly synchronized lights, lasers and pyrotechnics, illuminated moving set pieces that rise out of the stage and floor, video screens all over the place - the works - all seamlessly executed. None of the audio and vocal flaws that typically plague rap concerts - the sound quality was excellent and both guys performed their asses off.
Two legends putting on a show for the ages. Seriously, go. You will not be disappointed.
More than just the quality of the songs on the album.

That sounds like the antithesis of what a hip-hop gig should be about for me. I blame Puffy for this shit, lasers and videos etc. Nas at the Astoria in '03, THAT was a hip-hop show. Esco, the Braveheartz and a DJ spinning and scratching throughout, no more or less.

I've seen nas live on several occasions and with Damian marley. All shows amazing but I can honestly say I've never been this excited about a hip hop gig since public enemy nations of millions tour.

Just looked at the setlist...weak. I know they want to play new stuff and get people buying the CD but the majority of Jay-Z's classics aren't on the setlist. I know everyone has their favourites but no Can't Knock The Hustle/D'Evils/Dead Presidents/Never Let You Down is unforgiveable, particularly when the setlist appears to include Niggas In Paris SEVEN times!

Sweet enjoy your show Cuncha, you bringing popcorn with you or will you just buy a tub at the concert?
Eleven times  value for money there. Honestly though, whatever floats your boat and I'm sure it will be a spectacle, but Fro's review is exactly what I wouldn't want from a show, and the setlist has a degree in wackenomics.

Preferring the intimacy of a small venue performance to a stadium show is completely fair and something most people would probably agree with in general. But when a stadium show is done big and done right it can really be amazing.
