The sad thing about you Simon, is that you say all this and yet defend your love of Angie Martinez.

Simon
July 30th, 2003, 12:09 PM
Say what you want about her, her lyrics are competent, if a little basic, she doesn't embarass herself on the mic and her beats are better than 90% of what is put out. I'm into the whole Spanish hip-hop thing anyway, which helps, a lot of her beats have a Spanish feel to them.

Plus any album that has TONY SUNSHINE on it gets my vote. Best backing singer out. Hope he doesn't release a solo album and embarass himself the way Nate Dogg did.

Angie is fucing wack, this is a mans game, so i bet Angie thought she had a chance, fucking gender bender.

Angie is poor. Plain and simple. She's not even one of the best female MCs out there. I dont know what you are listening to to say she's better than 90% of everyone in the game.

:wtf:I said her beats were better than 90% of the game...listen to them and say that if someone you rated was flwoing on them, you wouldn't like it.

I'm not dissing Nate Dogg, when he drops a chorus, it's invariably on a classic. But his voice doesn't hold for a whole album, listen to Music And Me...it's shocking. I rate Tony Sunshine as one of the best backing singers around, but his voice wouldn't hold for an album either.

Blahahahahahahaha!

I went into HMV yesterday and bought this album on import for £16.99 after seeing it got 5 mics in the source and that Scarface was in the group. The Geto Boys "GRIP IT! On that other level"

Omg omg this is the funniest and one of the best albums of all time. I can't believe it took me this long to buy it. Everyone get this album somehow, it's awesome. The music is quality. And I've been quoting it all day in work. It's just like NWA but even funnier and the beats are just as good.

Simon

5 Mics when? Pre or post that time when the Source started sucking a giant Benzino sized corporate dick?

Probably when they started sucking benzino sized dick and gave a ton of cd's 5 mics. I don't even really give a shit about the source, but it's the best mag out of a bad bunch like.
Still. The albums they'be given five mics with the exception of all the Run Dmc and Stillmatic give or take a few others all deserve it n it's a good way to find new classics.

I just got the Mariah Carey re-release Charmbracelet CD and it's got some killer tracks plus some classics with Jay-Z, Freeway, Cam'ron and West Side Connection.

1. Through The Rain- Not really down with pop music, but Mariah does her thing in the song she wrote on her own. Great song.

2. Boy(I Need You) This is a remake of Cam's hit Oh boy and Mariah doesn't do anything speacial with the song but Camron's rap is excellent.

3. The One- A groovy R&B track where there is no over done vocals and it features JD. JD can really produce some hot tracks.

4. Yours- A R&B/Pop song she also is said to have a duet version with Justin Timberlake.

5. You got Me- feat. Freeway, and Jay-Z I never thought I could get down on a Mariah track, but this seals the deal. This is just as hot as the Busta track and Freeway's rap is excelent.

6. I Only Wanted- A ballod that is very strong.

7. Clown- Dedicated to Eminem. Another hot Mariah track where she even decides to rap the hook calling him a puppet show and a cry baby. Lyrics are awesome. Never thought Mariah could appeal to the hip hop community like she is now.

8. My Saving Grace- The girl does gospel and the song is a lyric masterpeice.

9. You Had Your Chance- Mariah delivers R&B like only she can with some more strong lyrics.

10. Lullaby- I don't really care for this song. It's a good track though.

11. Irresistable feat West Side connection- This track is hot. Ice Cube, Mac 10, and all the rest join in on what is a banging track from start to finsih. Lyrics are mad tight.

12. Subtle Invitation- Nice lyrics, but it tends to
fall into the R&B/pop catagory

13. Bringing On the heartbreak- This is a cover of the Def Leppoard Rock classic. Mariah does a great job, but it falls into the pop/rock catagory.

14. Sunflowers for Alfred Roy- A song dedicated to her dad.

15. Through the Rain Remix feat Joe and Kelly Price Mariah delivers a r&b spin to her hit song.

16. I Know What You Want / Busta Rhymes feat Mariah Carey, and the Flipmode squad. This is a banging track. Mariah and Busta make for a good duo.

17. Gotta Thing For You feat. Da Brat- Nice lyrics by Brat. She is so damn rowdy.

18. There Goes My Heart- Mariah delivers what could be a R&b classic.

19. The One Remix- The remix features Bone Crusher and its hot.

20. Missing You feat Jadakiss- This is abonus on some CD's but if your lucky enough to hear this blazing track you'll love it.

Mariah Carey has really surprised me. I have much love for her and all her efforts to get her career back on Track. I just hope Whitney can do the same.

It's not that good. His words all mumble together. And the beat sucks. If you want an example of the best flow, Q Tip's verse in Mobb Deep's classic drink away the pain is better than anything Big Pun could ever have dreamed of doing, and all the words are clear, and the song has a good beat.

Capital Punishment is one of the worst albums I ever bought, and it only cost £7 when I got it, total waste of money. Almost every beat sucks, decent lyrical content but pun is a horrible rapper.

Say's you. I know plenty. It's not like you ever hear Capital Punishment regarded as one of the greats. It's just known as "the best of the two albums by that dead guy".

The beats are garbage. Just listen to how twatty the beat in still not a player. Tinny piano and clikky noise. The rest of the songs are more hardcore but are mainly a ton of trumpets and bass that is too low for Pun's shite voice to be heard over, he raps too fast for himself to handle so you can't make out 50% of the lyrics. Prodigy murders him on his own shit... and for a song produced by the RZA even that has a garbage beat.

Simon
August 5th, 2003, 1:31 PM
Everything you just said is wrong. Still Not A Player is generally considered to be one of the great club anthems, Prodigy simply doesn't touch him, he even edges Black Thought on Super Lyrical, the beats are absolute top notch and the rest of what you've said seems to imply that you need your hearing tested...I have no trouble making out his lyrics, neither because the bass overshadows him nor because he raps too fast...

By who? I haven't heard it played anywhere in a club, bar or even on radio in about 3 or 4 years...

Prodigy simply doesn't touch him,
 He kills him on that song and Prodigys HNIC album alone is about 2 billion times greater than all of Puns career put together. How can anyone say Pun is better than Prodigy!! :wtf: [/qote]

he even edges Black Thought on Super Lyrical,
Yes, but Black thought is incredibly lazy on alot of songs. and Pun probably payed him more so he looked better...

the beats are absolute top notch

No.... no...
No.

This is totally laughable. Top notch is Only Built for Cuban Linx. Top notch is The Chronic, top notch is the Low End Theory, Top notch is The Blueprint, Illmatic? ..... Capital Punishment is not anywhere near that level, not ever.

and the rest of what you've said seems to imply that you need your hearing tested...I have no trouble making out his lyrics,
Probably because you surf the internet looking for them.

neither because the bass overshadows him nor because he raps too fast...

Busta rhymes used to rap fast because he could pull it off, ditto with Big Boi amoung other. Again. Big Pun cannot do it, he mumbles words into the next word and it just doesn't sound good.

Simon
August 5th, 2003, 2:16 PM

 He kills him on that song and Prodigys HNIC album alone is about 2 billion times greater than all of Puns career put together. How can anyone say Pun is better than Prodigy!! :wtf: I love Mobb Deep, but there's just no way Prodigy is better than Pun.

Yes, but Black thought is incredibly lazy on alot of songs. and Pun probably payed him more so he looked better...Conspiracy theories? Clutching at straws a little, no?

No.... no...
No.

This is totally laughable. Top notch is Only Built for Cuban Linx. Top notch is The Chronic, top notch is the Low End Theory, Top notch is The Blueprint, Illmatic? ..... Capital Punishment is not anywhere near that level, not ever. The Blueprint beats are mediocre to say the least, Cuban Linx, Low End Theory and Chronic are all classics, Illmatic's beats aren't amazing but that was deliberate, keeping them minimalist to ensure Nas' lyrics shone...Tell me that Dream Shatterer, Tres Leches, Beware and You Ain't A Killer aren't quality beats. The bass that kicks in at the start of Beware is, IMO, up there with the first piano note on Shook Ones 2, for sheer hardcore quality that just makes you KNOW that a great track is coming. Still Not A Player and You Came Up are both great club tracks, again the bassline on You Came Up is just class...

Probably because you surf the internet looking for them.Again, a very weak argument. Pun isn't hard to understand at all.

Busta rhymes used to rap fast because he could pull it off, ditto with Big Boi amoung other. Again. Big Pun cannot do it, he mumbles words into the next word and it just doesn't sound good.Busta can't actually rhyme the way he does on his albums...he's notorious for it on live shows. Pun has no problem with it, and I maintain that you saying it's hard to understand his words is a problem that you have, rather than he had.

Prodigy seems unmotivated on a lot of tracks on HNIC like "YBE" and "Lived with the bullshit". No doubt, it was a good album, but it wasn't better than Capital Punishment in my opinion. It's better than Yeaaah Baby though.

I Am... better than Illmatic? With tracks like "Money is my Bitch" and "K-I-S-S-I-N-G", how can you compare it to Illmatic? Illmatic is way better, but I Am still has some dope songs on it. "Undying Love" is an awesome story and "NY State of Mind pt II" is hot.

Has anyone else got the new Daz album "DPGC You know what I'm throwin Up". I got it a week ago and have been listening to it ever since. Daz tears it up on every song. Its got to be the most hardcore West Coast album I've ever heard! Its great. Suge Knight is a bitch ass nigga alright. Theres a bonus DVD with it and its classic, Daz so f'ing funny. And theres two videos on it, One for U AINT SHIT and one for DEEZ NIGGAZ TRIPPIN. Cheap videos but that's whats so good about em. Snoop does all the interludes on the album and they're tight.

Recommended, 9/10 but you've gotta love west coast to like this one. UKers can get it for a tenner at Play.com. Its like 22 quid in HMV.

Anyone else REALLY anticipating Pharoahe Monch's new album next month(I think). Been listening to his Agent Orange single a lot and found the lyrics to the song, funny how subtle a lot of things are in this song, here's the first verse

Pissed on the motherfucking White House lawn
I threw a rock, then I ran
Cause I couldn't stand anymore within the grip of the man
Y'all wanna ask me who's sane
These biological gasses are eating my brain
Its a political grab bag to rape mother earth
Thirty seconds after they bagged dad for what he's worth
Thousands will die now so millions can smile later
This ain't the Rockford Files nigga
They stockpile data for satellites
Where you discuss who's style is greater
In this killing pool you playing it cool like Kyle Jada
When ya'll ready to rock like Led Zep and Al Qaeda
With weapons of mass destruction an hour later
What's your identity today?
You on some John F. Kennedy or Timothy McVeigh?
This Hennessy done left me with a remedy to spray
For my identity your life is the penalty to pay
Motherfucker

Never. He is currently talking about that stupid BlackMilc project which is destined to fail. I can't stand the fusion of rock and rap. He isn't even the front man for that so it'll probably suck kinda like Rip Rock did(only bad track off of Can-I-Bus). In his recent interviews he always says there is much more in store.

Since RTJ was in theory possibly the final chapter of the independant trylogy he may be looking to sign with a major label soon.

My Canibus-Rip The Jacker review

1. Genabis – The first verse is simply awesome. The way compares himself as creating rap the same way to God creating the universe was creative. The production is nice. The little bells, or whatever it is, and the hint of the opera singers sounds good. ***1/2

2. Psych Evaluation – The beat sounds like something out of a horror movie. Really eerie-sounding. The hook is a bunch of samples and that female voice in it is creepy. The stand out lines for me come in the third verse:

“I’ve lost interest in the battle glory and glamour/ But I cant control Rip the Jacker when he gets amped up/ It doesn’t matter, we’ve all got a dark side/”

The dude yelling “Help Me!” at the end just makes this track even scarier. ****

3. Cemantics – The horns are sick on this song. The hook is again composed of samples. I love that line in the second verse about the meaning of man. He talks about a lot of things in the lyrics and he really kills it towards the end of the third verse. ****

4. Showtime at the Gallows – With such a dope title, the Latin beat caught me off guard. It’s a good beat, and I would have never imagined Canibus spitting on something like this. A really hot line is when he says “How long can one dis song possible last?”. The Parrish Smith sample on the hook goes with the beat, but what he says is hella gay. ***

5. Indisible – Another Latin-flavored beat, but this one is better than SATG. The hook is a guy singing in a chipmunk voice, but it still sounds good. This is a very braggadocios track, but it’s not just said in typical “I’m better than you” fashion. The third verse is sick. The stand out line is when he says:

“Nobody gives you what they didn’t already take/ You have to pick a lock just to open a gate/”

I thought there might have been a hidden track when the beat changes at the end because it was rumored that their was one, but it wasn’t :(. ****

6. Spatibus – This was the first single and the beat has a very Middle eastern feel to it. The first verse is mostly battle, the second is the Mic Club style, but the third verse is probably the best. “Explain what is poetry and what is rap/ I demonstrate how to effectively bridge the gap”. Hot shit. The Rakim sample goes well with this song. ***

7. Levitibus – The beat has somewhat of an Italian feel to it with the female opera singer and the accordions. The Vinnie Paz sample on the hook gets stuck in my head all the time. Bis talks in retrospect about a lot of things in his career, as is evident in the lines:

“They look at me like "poor bastard"
Why can't you manipulate billboard with all your metaphor magic?
No matter how I hard i practice
Every microphone I saw I grabbed it
Obviously that's the wrong tactic
I went through a long period of mourning and sadness when I wrote that Stan shit
But if you wanna hear some hardcore Canibus just say so
Then I come out the eggroll with 7 dead scrolls
If you could find a better flow
Then I can find a dinosaur on the Galapagos archipelago
Hey, you shouldn't fall for the naivety Lyrically I'm the illest when my beats is ok
Food for thought, nutrition for the whole brain
Keep your neurotransmitters warm on a cold day
I'm ahead of my time, or so they say
I guess that's why I already feel old and grey
Ok, that's enough knowledge for today, I'm killing them
You better not forget it cause this is Levitibus” ****

8. Poet Laureate II – Holy shit. Everything about this track is amazing. All 3 beats, the lyrics, it just blends perfectly. The first verse is almost haunting, then when the beat changes it has a really laid back feel to it. What more can I say? Get this track if you haven’t heard it yet. *****

9. No Return – The reggae beat again caught me off guard, but it’s still very good. The tune of the hook is really catchy too. The 3 verses are 3 different stories and they all end in Bis dying. He never gets much credit for his storytelling abilities, which is odd because these 3 are easy to follow and very well put together. ****1/2

10. M-Sea-Cresy – Another beat with a Latin-feel to it, but it doesn’t get tired as some have said. Some of the lyrics are really eye-opening and deep. I still don’t get what he means when he says “This is level one/ after this, my message is done/”. Perhaps a deal with a major label? Or perhaps his last rap album? No one gives a fuck about BlakMilc. ***1/2

Overall, this is probably my favorite Canibus album. The lyrics and beats and awesome and he showcases a lot of styles. He also stepped his multi-syllable rhymes a lot. ****/5

I was just over in Canada on holiday, came back on Friday during the big powercut (stuck in the airport for 7 hours, we luckily got to fly on a fresh plane that we got from Montreal though I was supposed to fly from Toronto originally.)
Anyway, while over there I bought 8 albums and 2 arrived from Amazon.co.uk while I was away.

I bought:

Tical - Method Man
Wu Mix - The Rza & Big Cap (I thought this was a Rza album with him rapping, but I was mistaken though it is actually not bad.)
ATLiens - Outkast (Probably the most surprisingly good album I've ever bought. I didn't realise Outkast were as fucking trippy as they were on this album, I'm definately listening to this when I'm stoned more often.)
And Then There Was X - DMX (I'm a big DMX fan :) )
The Blueprint - Jay Z (Best album out of the whole lot, every song is tight as fuck. Takeover is simply the best diss track out of the whole Nas/Jay thing, and I've heard Ether, I own Stillmatic - Jay rips it up and imo he's the better MC.)
Joe Budden - Joe Budden (I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, I've been putting it off in favour of the other albums because it seems like this one is going to be either great or terrible...)
He's Keith Murray - Keith Murray (Been meaning to buy a Keith Murray album, this one is pretty good from my first impressions.)
Greatest Hits The Millenium Collection - Eric B and Rakim (I always wanted Paid In Full but it wasn't available at the time, Follow The Leader was but I decided to take the safest option and buy the guaranteed quality album. I've listened to Paid In Full the 7 minute remix a thousand times and I think the only conclusion that I can come to is that it's a masterpiece all over - I fucking love the beat more than any other right now and Rakim may not be rapping all the way through it but he's never bad when he does rap.)

I ordered:

Rip The Jacker - Canibus (First impressions were that it was a very strong album lyrically, much like any one of Canibus' previous albums, however the beats aren't as good as in MicClub. I've listened to it more and more over the last 2 days and I've decided that since it's Canibus then his beats have always been secondary anyway and as a result his lyrics shine through - there isn't a bad track on the album either. Poet Laureat II is fantastic also, 100 bars will always be the original but I like this new song very much.)
Boy in Da Corner - Dizzee Rascal (This lad is quality, Fix Up Look Sharp is classic and this album is stuck in the CD player until I get sick of any track on the album - which is unlikely. Great album, shades of garage even if he does deny that he's a garage artist, though I have no problem admitting I like it.)

I'm going to go against the grain here and say that Tical is probably the most disappointing album I bought, I like Method Man, but he's not as hot on this album as I expected. The Best song is probably Bring The Pain, the remix is great too however the rest of the album is yet to draw me in.

What does everyone thing is Outkast's best album? I have not really gotten into them too much (downloaded about 30 of their songs, but don't have any albums) and want to buy their best work. From what I've heard so far, ATLiens is the way to go. Although I have a friend who is in love with Aquemini. I think there's no doubt all 4 of their albums have abeen great, so what do you think is their best?

I like RnB, infact, Id consider myself quite a big fan, but pharrel dosnt have a good singing voice you fucking idiot, listen to some d'angelo then tell me he's good at fucking singing, it sounds like hes just struggling to hit the notes in that stupid high pitched whine, and they've probably fucked around with his vocals in the studios just to get it to sound that good, he's ass.

You must be tone deaf or something, I think most people would agree that Pharrell has a good voice, it's not a great voice - I didn't say that, but it is a good singing voice. Especially because he's making R'n B music his voice suits it well, it's calming

You're obviously the idiot, persecuting people because they enjoy different opinions to yours. I'd happily go listen to some D'Angelo music and then tell you that Pharrell is good at singing, but guess what - I don't really like D'Angelo

No most people don't like his god awful voice. High pitched, cant hit note if my life depended on it voice. Pharrell is garbage, the Neptunes recycle old beats over and over again, there garbage most of the time. That Frontin joint is terrible.

D'Angelo=Bitches panties come off
Pharrell=Panties run away

September looks to be a good month hopefully DMX the dog is back, Outkast(well see Dre is one weird muhfucka), MOP.

This has by far been one of the worst years of rap music. 2001 was hot, it was the last good year for rap, 2002 was a failure and so far 2003 has been pathetic, only a few good releases.

I think you have been writing this year off far too soon for far too long 50 Cent. It is typical in basically every year in hip hop that most of the biggest releases are saved for towards the end of the year. 2003 isn't any different.

Chad is Filipino, not Chinese. He said in an interview that he plays most of the instruments and Pharell just drums and sings.

Black Album is getting way too overhyped. I dont even think it will be all that great, but I could be wrong. Maybe I'm just bitter over the crap that was BP2.

I think DMX will try to take it back on Grand Champ. I like the new single, and seeing him with Swizz reminds me of when Double R was the greatest thing going.

New Outkast will own. Nothing more to say. If the rumored 8-minute Andre track is on it, this could possibly be my new favorite album. I like every song I've heard from it so far.

Being a Michiganian I am definitely most anticipating the new Royce as far as the rest of this year goes.

And Crooked I...aaaanytime now buddy. They are killing his hype by holding him back this long. From the start of the year until about June he was probably the most talked about rap artist as far as anticipation goes. Then in July and now in August people slowly are forgetting about him. I heard from a good source back in May that it would be out in August. Now August is almost by with nothing. I am doubting it will drop this year if even ever. Hopefully Kurupt knows what he is doing while Suge is locked up. Maybe with all the material recorded it will be the first ever...triple album!!! Hehehe.

I am anticipating The Black Album to be Jay-Z's best work yet. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but The Blueprint simply changed my views of Jigga. It made me realize how capable this guy is of making awesome music. And all hype aside, I read he is working with The Roots on the whole album. Not like they are going to be on the songs or even producing, but they are helping him pick out his beats and decide who he puts on as guest rappers. Part of me thinks I am in for a dissapointment, but Jay's been hyping this sh*t up more than he ever has before. And all of his new songs have been dope. The S. Carter Collection was dope, his verse on the Beyonce song was dope, and his verses on that Bad Boys 2 song were dope. And you know he's gotta be saving his best shit for The Black Album. To me, he seems hungry right now. He seems like he wants to put out his own Illmatic. I think he is gonna live up to the hype. Or at least I hope so.

He might drop some classic stuff, but some of the producers he's working with are Swizz Beatz, Neptunes and Timbaland, which mostly means club/commercial tracks. Does anyone actually review albums in this thread?

Just to keep myself from looking hypocritcal...

My favorite Album

Talib Kweli & HiTek:Reflection Eternal "Train of Thought"

1. Experience Dedication- Maybe just a coincidence, but Dave Chappelle happens to be my favorite comedian as well. This tricked many people I know into thinking this was actually Nelson Mandela, and its one of the only Intro's that I still listen to every time. (10/10 as far as intros go)

2. Move Somethin'- My favorite song after I heard it. Of course during the listening of this album, my favorite song changed more in an hour than ever in my life. Gotta love the horns...(9/10)

3. Some Kind of Wonderful- Extremely tight yet redundant beat with high velocity lyrics and a blazing chorus (7/10)

4. The Blast- A bit of a cooldown from the previous two tracks, and Hi-Tek drops a nice verse (7/10)

5. This Means You- Mos Def comes in and gives another solid boost (8/10)

6. Too Late- First song I wasn't feeling too much on my first listen, was kind of a downer. It was self-absorbed in a "hip-hop is dying except for me" kind of way. (5/10)

7.Memories Live- Kickback, great song, although the fire of the first two songs seems like a distant memory at this point (6/10)

8.Africa Dream- Great song, really like an interlude (this is how interludes should be, even if thats not how it was intended) (9/10 as in interlude)

9. Down for the Count- Thumping beat, great cameos by Rah Digga and Xzibit, though I would have appreciated the solo version of this song better (8/10)

10. Name of the Game- I love the lyrics on this, I often say them to myself whenever I need to pump myself up for something (9/10)

11. Ghetto Afterlife- Decent song, but I'd expect more of an impact from Kool G Rap (7/10)

12. On My Way- Another good interlude type track which leads into the next song very well... (7/10 as an interlude)

13. Love Language- One of the best laid back songs on the album, and the chorus is in french (for all the young pimps out there) (8/10)

14. Love Speakeasy- Great Jazz track , no rap, with the record popping sound for your enjoyment (9/10 as an interlude)

15. Soul Rebels- De La Soul takes over on this song, and despite the fact that I'm a Kweli fan, thats actually a good thing... my only qualm on this song is that Maseo sounds a bit like Ja Rule :wtf: (9/10)

16. Eternalists- One of my favorite tracks on the album, rolls very well from the previous track (9/10)

17. Big Del from Da Natti- Sounded like an afterthought, wasn't feeling it too much, no Kweli (4/10)

18. Touch You- Cameo by Dave Chappelle again, this time as Rick James (sounds just like him) Over a track that sounds like something Rick James would actually do if he could (8/10)

19. Good Mourning- Somber, very touching, and what I thought at the time was a great last song for one of my favorite albums (9/10)

20. Expansion Outro- Fanfare to close out album, nothing special...

Overall: (8/10) I was very impressed and it took its place for me as one of the best albums I have ever heard. I quickly took the CD out and listened to the other album I bought that day. Slum Village "Trinity: Past, Present, and Future" (unrelated story, I'd give that album a 7/10) It wasn't until the second time I listened to the album that I discovered this song...

20b. For Women- This is the song that I honestly cannot imagine a person not liking... I'm sure its possible, but I honestly consider this to be the perfect song. I consider this to be the hidden masterpiece that has to be experienced to be understood. Four verses no hook, but an excellent beat for a song like this. The whole thing does exactly what I'm sure they intended, it causes reflection. Many will argue other songs, but I don't know if I'll ever hear a song as deep, meaningful and entertaining as "For Women" (10/10)

Overall: (10/10) That last piece makes me love this album, in some ways I believe the whole album is the build up to get you ready for For Women. When I listen to it by itself, it doesn't have the same effect. But when I listen to the album as a whole, "For Women strikes me as the perfect ending to a beautiful masterpiece...

Awwww yeah...Rapreviews showing some love for Canibus...

Canibus is a riddle within an enigma shrouded by mystery; a confusing conumdrum of conflicting creativity forces contained within his cranium. The dichotomy of his rap is a truly scattered diaspora - greatness left behind on one album, whackness living within another. On underrated albums like "2000 B.C." and "Mic Club" the rapper proves himself to be more than a one-trick punchline pony with big words. On subpar albums like "Can-I-Bus" and "C True Hollywood Stories" he digs deeper into the abyss than a Pennsylvania coal miner. No one understands the reasons why, least of all Canibus himself. Still 'Bis presses on, and each time we hope for the dope and not a plate of dog food.

On "Rip the Jacker," Canibus may have finally found a producer who is capable of bringing out his best consistantly. If the long-winded name "Stoupe the Enemy of Mankind" doesn't ring a bell, then you probably aren't familiar with his work for the seminal underground group Jedi Mind Tricks. Nevertheless on a short list of indie rap greats, he ranks with Chops, Celph Titled, Alchemist and Madlib as among the best of the best in beats. Suffice it to say reading the words "All tracks produced by Stoupe" in the liner notes made this reviewer smile like a kid in a candy store. On "Rip the Jacker" Stoupe lives up to his reputation in spades. The martial arts sounds of "Spartibus" are perfect for 'Bis and his kung-fu rap style; the Rakim samples of the hook are just icing on the cake. "Indisible" switches up into a mariachi meets Kanye West dance of death so brutal it's beautiful. "Psych Evaluation" is appropriately dark and moody, putting the listener under the same microscope 'Bis has often found his career in front of - and again the appropriate chorus snippets could give DJ Premier a run for the money. It's also worth a break from discussing the beats at this point to see the power of his prose in this song:

"C-A-N dash, I dash, B-U-S
gets the last laugh before the critical mass
In half the speed of a ball flash, fire engulf that ass
into a molehill of charcoal ash
Only to be blown away by a cold draft
Whack MC's got no chance, it's so sad
They ask Canibus - will you ever run out of things to say?
How much breath can a man breathe in a day?
Needless to say, I think it's kind of deep in a way
People be like - 'Bis is too ill, keep him away!
It's a good thing I got patience
I been waiting here longer than Dr. Levernson's time equations"

But if you think 'Bis is only here to bust super-science or challenge inferior MC's, he lives up to the title and challenges himself:

"I used to be an undisciplined piece of fecal matter
An underdog rapper, but I closed that chapter
I deal with my adaptive difficulty faster
And question my projective technique as a rapper
I've lost interest in the battle glory and glamour
But I can't control Rip the Jacker when he gets amped up"

This is the form Canibus fans have come to expect when all the stars align and a perfect moment of his time is captured on wax, and this album is packed with such crystalized slices of powerful rap ability. Therefore a gimmick like having a song called "Genabis" would seem silly coming from any other MC really do come across as a God of the microphone giving his word to the masses. That's why on the former, which is also the lead single, Stoupe's beat sounds appropriately awe-inspiring. It's a mixture of bells, chanting choirs, and pounding drums appropriate enough to be the backdrop of a Final Fantasy boss battle. The only thing being attacked here though are your ears with lyrical skills:

"Yo, in the beginnin I discovered wordplay
I experimented with some syllables from the first to the third day
On the fourth I searched for the words to say
How to compress complex verbiage in the least amount of space
I was perfect at it and mastered the tactic
On the fifth day I decided I would combine it with mathematics
On the sixth day I became a fanatic, and I couldn't kick the habit
I would just look in the mirror and practice
On the seventh cycle, I had to take the day off
I was exhausted, I guessed my work will never pay off
But if it happened it to him, it could happen to me
And if it happened to me, it was destined to be"

Although it's instructive to single out individual songs and lyrics and break down their complex structure into the simple parts that make them dope, it's ultimately redundant to examine "Rip the Jacker" song by song. In truth, it's not as if any of the songs AREN'T dope. So effective is 'Bis over Stoupe's beats that it makes his past work better retroactively; making his claims on "Levitibus" that "even my worst album was sublime, if I don't slow down I distort the timeline" sound entirely credible. As a rap fan you will enjoy every minute of this far too short forty-five minute album, from the "Intro" to the finale "Poet Laureate II" at the finale. Everybody will have individual favorites of course - some may enjoy the floating flute and lackadaisical pace of "No Return" while others may be more attuned to the heavy concrete sounds of "Cemantics." Either way "Rip the Jacker" may be the first album of perfection Canibus has seen in his half decade career, and it showcases to an unparalleled degree why early on he was compared to greats like Rakim. If he continues to work with Stoupe and release albums like this, there's no limits to where 'Bis can take rap, or where hip-hop can ultimately take him.

Violator - V2.0 Review

1. Intro - Shameless plugs for people nobody cares about (No rating)

2. What It Is - Everyone's heard this song. Catchy hook, simple beat and Busta brings the energy. My complaint is that Busta talks too much about asses (***)

3. Grimey - Why do the Neptunes waste good beats for Nore? Not a memorable lyric on here, but that can easily be tuned out for the beat (***)

4. Put Your Hands Up - Ugh. LL Cool J spits boring women/car/ice rhymes, though the flow isn't bad. The hook is atrocious with that chipunk, high-pitched Swizz Beatz. (**)

5. Livin In Da City - This beat has way too much going on. It just sounds like a bunch of random computer sounds thrown together and having no-names Da Franchise rapping doesn't help. Butch Cassidy is nice on the chorus though (* 1/2)

6. Come Thru - Styles P and Nore come hard on this song. The bass pounds and the off-key keyboards sound good. The hook is somewhat out of place, but I like it. Not that great lyrically, but just something to get you amped up (*** 1/2)

7. We Are - Memphis Bleek and too-wack-to-be-on-State-Property Geda K spit over a mediocre Just Blaze beat. It gets worst as Funk Flex gives his lame shout outs at the end. I've heard him say the same names so many times I probably have them memorized. (**)

8. Sexual Chocolate- CeeLo raps/sings in what is just a weird, but catchy song. Closet Freak reminds me of this song (** 1/2)

9. Fiend - Jojo Pellegrino spits on this Rakim remake. It's not a bad song, but the original is so much better. Having the Rakim voice samples in the back is a nice touch. (***)

10. Ex - Horrible, just fucking horrible. Missy and Ja Rule sing with Tweet about doing extasy over some corny Irv Gotti beat. It only gets a point because Tweet sounds like the greatest singer alive in-between verses from these idiots (*)

11. You Feel Me/Options - This is actually 2 songs merged into one track for no reason. Remi Martin, Fat Joe and Havoc rap on a pretty good Hav beat and surprisingly Joe has the best verse. The second song is Capone and Noyd who trade verses on an ok beat. The horns and violins sound nice, but the beat is bland without them. (****)

12. Livin the Life - Jadakiss talks about guns and coke again, but his flow is good on this one. Prodigy sounds so unmotivated and bored, but Butch Cassidy makes up for it on the hook. The Scott Storch beat is good too. (*** 1/2)

13. Die 3 - Who is The Outfit? The slow violin beat isn't bad, but these guys are boring (**)

14. Grind Season - Pellegrino comes back on this track and does a good job with Kurupt, who also had a good verse. The beat and chorus aren't particulary great, but catchy. (***)

15. Hoppin In My Car - Who the hell is Hollyhood? I'm glad I haven't heard another song from her lame ass. Swearing in R&B songs seems out of place to me and it's just a cheap way to get attention (*)

16. Next Generation - Let's see who will supposedly run rap in the future: Fabolous (yeah right), Jojo Pellegrino (if he ever comes out, he could be decent), Remi Martin (she has potential), Red Cafe (some lame dude from Da Franchise), Fortune (who?) and Caddillac Tah ( ) Kay Slay slobbers on the mic telling the old school to "Get the fuck off". The horns on the beat are pretty good, but nobody really brings the lyrics here except Fabolous, which is odd considering I dont like him (** 1/2. Had potential to be a good song)

17. Cant Get Enough - Spliff Starr and Rah Digga spit lame sex raps over an-already-used Busta Rhymes beat. The wack R&B chick on the hook is pretty crappy too (* 1/2)

The first album was better with appearances from guys like Pun and Beatnuts, but Beatnuts, Mysonne and 8Ball are nowhere to be found on this album, which is strange considering Mysonne had about 5 tracks on volume one.

O V E R A L L . . . . . 2.5 / 5

I got the new Outkast last night. Andre 3000's album is crazy good. Big Boi's sucks dick. Andre Benjamin has always been the life of Outkast in my opinion. Far outshines Big Boi with this as well.

QuietStorm
September 12th, 2003, 10:38 AM
Ok I guess I was a little hard on Big Boi's. The more I listen to it the more it is growing. God, no one is weirder than Outkast.

But it still sucks dick compared to Andre 3000's side.

Suno
September 12th, 2003, 11:08 AM
I heard differently, I heard that Big Boi's was fire and Andre's was some wierd trippy rock shit that will have to grow on ya, but apparently it's still black music.

QuietStorm
September 12th, 2003, 11:25 AM
Well yeah...Big Boi's has an old-school pure hip hop vibe. Andre's is a lot of trippy jazz and he sings a lot. Appeals to me for some reason. The weirder the better with him.

QuietStorm
September 12th, 2003, 1:31 PM
You know, the Andre grew old fast. I think this whole album is just one big letdown. Oh well, never been much of an Outkast person anyways. I have stated that before.

I heard mention a while ago that Canibus was/is working on a rock project. Is this true? Who is it being done with and will it be anything like "Rip Rock" on Can-I-Bus, because I liked that song a lot

QuietStorm
September 12th, 2003, 2:00 PM
Well, most people including me, hated the hell out of Rip Rock. But that was mainly for that gay Wyclef beat.

And yeah BlackMilc is coming next year with him and Killah Priest involved. But I don't think either of them are going to be the front man. They are just going to have a hand in the project. I have a feeling it will suck.

But the rumor is 2004 is going to bring a new album/DVD from Canibus. I have heard the Exobus Scripts and I have heard Canibus VI. Who cares though. As long as it is out it should be great.

If QS isn't even much of an Outkast fan and said it was good, then I'll probably love this album. 11 days left!

BlakMilc is a stupid idea IMO because nobody wants to hear it. Everyone is waiting for a Horsemen album but now Ras is in jail, Bis is in the army and Kurupt is with Death Row. I dont know whats up with Priest.

I'm not too excited about the DMX album either. I thought after hearing the first 2 singles that he would take it back to "Flesh of My Flesh", but he said in an interview that Chingy and Cam'Ron are on the album  It's supposed to be his last album and he's working with these bums? Why not Scarface, probably X's favorite MC?

Got Some Teeth is going to be an 'In Da Club'-like hit that could make Obie into a star as quickly as 50 Cent...and  it's actually a GOOD song, unlike 50's sack of spunk single. The video rules too, Eminem as greasy Greek barman =

I got a promo copy on Monday, will probably end up reviewing it for next week's paper. I've only listened to it twice, so I could be wrong, but so far I'm saying that it is really, really mediocre. There are two songs that stand out, but the rest is just Bubba rapping NONSTOP about being from "the country." And the production follows that stupid theme, too ... like, every song has banjo samples, harmonica, etc. etc. People can say "Oh! That is so neat! He isn't rapping about being a thug!" but I say it is just as fucking stupid. He's just rapping about one subject: where he's from. I'm gonna put out a rap album called SOPHOMORE IN COLLEGE and see how it sells.

So, as of right now, I'm saying its like one really long, somwhat shitty cover of Outkast's "Rosa Parks."

The fact that Eminem is in the video isn't the point, it's what he's doing that makes it good...the 'character' he plays is funny, as is the Shallow Hal concept of the video in general.

my comments are always valid.

It just irks me that eminem can sign mediocre rappers and they blow up because they signed with eminem, who I still respect, but the rap game is starting to revolve around him it seems, I mean his wack production is cropping up all over the place, and I think he's lost the drive to be the best MC he can be and just fogs us off with generic verses, but i still respect him, I know he is one of the best out now, I mean the skit on obie's album where he mimics canibus is hilarious, but i havnt heard a verse I liked from him for ages.

As it is right now, it has a hint of Dre (IMO) thogh inferior, but he has time on his side, in my opinion he could be really good.

As for Eminem being able to make average rappers into stars - agreed, I'd much rather see Immortal Technique, Cormega or Crooked I blow up, but that isn't going to happen, and Obie is decent enough. As for Eminem rapping...again, I have to agree :( he's probably the best rapper out right now, but doesn't put enough effort in. And, worryingly, Bizarre says something about a Devil's Night 2 coming soon...I'd rather have another Eminem solo :\
