We really should have learned by now never to trust anything Dre says off hand in a homemade video. A rep from Interscope has denied the 4/20 release date.

Albums I'm looking out for in the short term: Gutter Rainbows by Talib Kweli (drops 1/25) and the Saigon album produced mostly by Just Blaze (Kanye has a track too, drops 2/15)

Too bad Detox is going to be awful

Detox is obviously going to suffer from expectations being unrealistically high, but I for one really like Kush and I Need a Doctor. This is one of the few albums where I'll be avoiding any leaks and copping it in stores on release day.

Eddie Colon
February 11th, 2011, 11:56 AM
Really? Both of those tracks were really weak. I need a doctor is a love the way you lie piggyback song and Kush sounds like the most generic dr. dre song ever.

Fro
February 11th, 2011, 12:19 PM
The beat on I Need a Doctor is weak for a Dre song, no denying that. But I absolutely love the hook and the Em verses. Dre's verse is kinda meh but not bad. It's an 8/10 song for me, even if it sounds like it belongs on an Eminem album rather than Detox.

Kush is so damn crisp sounding. It's the equivalent of Still D.R.E., and yeah it's not as fresh but I dunno, I dig it.

If these are the two best songs on Detox then it will be a disappointment. If these are the two worst songs on Detox then it will be another classic. So let's see.

That's probably because Em wrote Dre's verse. There's even an mp3 out there somewhere where Em is rapping Dre's verse. It was on hiphopdx, not sure if it's still there.

I'm fairly certain that was a different song you're thinking of, called Topless.

But anyway, you're still right. There's nothing wrong with Em (or Snoop or D.O.C. or Jay-Z) writing Dre's verses. Hell, Em wrote Dre's first verse on Forgot About Dre which is my favorite verse of his ever. But on I Need a Doctor he doesn't sound natural, and it's obvious Em wrote it.

RuneEdge
February 12th, 2011, 8:56 PM
Yeah, there's no reference version of "I need a Doctor". Atleast there isnt one thats leaked.
But I wouldnt say it fits into Eminem's last album more than Detox. The track kinda has a "Slim Shady" feel to it and Recovery was more of a "Marshall Mathers". I can imagine the track fitting into the Relapse album quite nicely.

"2.0 Boys" is great, lots of lyricism going on right there. Could have done without the hook but it's not a big deal. Hoping Slaughterhouse and Yela get a chance to put out new projects sooner than later.

Really into the Odd Future kids lately. Seems like all of them bring a little something unique to the fold. The newest album, the Frank Ocean record, is some super spaced out R&B, sounds nothing like the rest of the stuff they've released. The Jet Age of Tomorrow is also really fun, highly recommend checking out their 2 albums.

Do you think that's the "almost made a song dissin' lil wayne" he was talking about on Talkin' To Myself? I thought he meant he wrote it but didn't record it but maybe he just didn't mean for it to ever get released.

Stringer Bell
March 10th, 2011, 12:46 PM
I actually wondered the same thing, but I'm not sure. The actual lyrics don't really seem like that much of a diss, a dismissive tone sure but I would think if Em was going to "diss" someone, you'd know it...

Fro
March 10th, 2011, 12:50 PM
Yeah I don't think so. The only people it really disses are Bubba Sparxx and Paul Wall. Even that part is supposed to be taken as sarcasm, I think, but it's kinda hard to tell so I could see them being pissed.

Fro
March 10th, 2011, 12:59 PM
But, it was probably made right around the same time period he was referring to, when he was working on his comeback and trying to figure out what route to take.

Simon
March 11th, 2011, 9:36 AM
Definitely sounds like it is what he was getting at on Talkin' To Myself. Worth remembering that these tracks are from the period he mentions on Recovery where he was still nuts from the drugs. Pointless, weak disses borne out of jealousy and bitterness but not really meant.

Makes you wonder whether he wrote that verse on Talkin' To Myself because he knew these tapes would leak eventually and he wanted everyone to know what was going on when he did them, a pre-apology rather than a confession. Although to be honest anyone with even a passing interest in him would know they weren't coming from any real source of passion because whenever he's really wanted to go at someone in the past he has destroyed them. His dismemberment of Everlast on 'I Remember' was stunning.

Fro
March 11th, 2011, 1:16 PM
Again though, he didn't actually diss Lil Wayne in any of these songs. Saying, and I paraphrase, "when Wayne says he's better than Jay-Z than implies Jay is the greatest and the only one in that league" is not a diss of Lil Wayne. It's just Em saying he doesn't get enough respect in discussions of the GOAT. Hence, he ALMOST made a song dissing Lil Wayne.

As you guys have said, when Em disses someone he completely destroys them.

I don't really listen to Tech much anymore cause he is on some get money/fame shit now and I ain't hatin. Dude has been in the game longer than most of the people discussed in this thread, but I still like some shit.

So I met Chad Hugo of the Neptunes and Malice of the Clipse tonight. Both guys were really nice and humble, by far some of the "coolest" celebs I have ever met. Malice was there promoting his new book/autobiography, and Chad was just there tagging along. Managed to get Lord Willin, Hell Hath No Fury, and Til The Casket dropped all signed by both guys. Awesome night.

Synopsis

[original research? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:No_original_research)]
On a cool, clear night (typical to Southern California (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_California)) Warren G travels through his neighborhood, searching for women with whom he might initiate sexual intercourse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_intercourse). He has chosen to engage in this pursuit alone.[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Regulate_%28song%29&oldid=386691435#cite_note-4)
Nate Dogg, having just arrived in the east side of Long Beach (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Beach,_California), seeks Warren. On his way to find Warren, Nate passes a car full of women who are excited to see him. Regardless, he insists to the women that there is no cause for excitement.
Warren makes a left turn at 21st Street and Lewis Ave, in the East Hill/Salt Lake neighborhood[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Regulate_%28song%29&oldid=386691435#cite_note-5), where he sees a group of young men enjoying a game of dice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dice_games) together. He parks his car and greets them. He is excited to find people to play with, but to his chagrin, he discovers they intend to relieve him of his material possessions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robbery). Once the hopeful robbers reveal their firearms, Warren realizes he is in a less than favorable predicament.
Meanwhile, Nate passes the women, as they are low on his list of priorities. His primary concern is locating Warren. After curtly casting away the strumpets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strumpet) (whose interest in Nate was such that they crashed their automobile), he serendipitously stumbles upon his friend, Warren G, being held up by the young miscreants.
Warren, unaware that Nate is surreptitiously observing the scene unfold, is in disbelief that he is being robbed. The perpetrators have taken jewelry and a Rolex Watch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolex) from Warren, who is so incredulous that he asks what else the robbers intend to steal. This is most likely a rhetorical question (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhetorical_question).
Observing these unfortunate proceedings, Nate realizes that he may have to use his firearm to deliver his friend from harm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right_of_self-defense).
The tension crescendos as the robbers point their guns to Warren's head. Warren senses the gravity of his situation. He cannot believe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance) the events unfolding could happen in his own neighborhood. As he imagines himself making a fantastical escape, he catches a glimpse of his friend, Nate.
Nate has seventeen cartridges (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartridge_%28firearms%29) (sixteen residing in the pistol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handgun)'s magazine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magazine_%28firearms%29), with a solitary round placed in the chamber (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chamber_%28firearms%29) and ready to be fired) to expend on the group of robbers. Afterward, he generously shares the credit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humility) for neutralizing the situation with Warren, though it is clear that Nate did all of the difficult work. Putting congratulations aside, Nate quickly reminds himself that he has committed multiple homicides (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homicide) to save Warren before letting his friend know that there are females nearby if he wishes to fornicate with them.
Warren recalls that it was the promise of copulation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libido) that coaxed him away from his previous activities, and is thankful that Nate knows a way to satisfy these urges. Nate quickly finds the women who earlier crashed their car on Nate's account. He remarks to one that he is fond of her physical appeal. The woman, impressed by Nate's singing ability, asks that he and Warren allow her and her friends to share transportation. Soon, both friends are driving with automobiles full of women to the East Side (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastside,_Long_Beach,_California) Motel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motel), presumably to consummate their flirtation in an orgy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orgy).
The third verse is more expository (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expository), with Warren and Nate explaining their G Funk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G_Funk) musical style. Warren displays his bravado by daring anyone to approach the style. There follows a brief discussion of the genre's musicological features, with special care taken to point out that in said milieu the rhythm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhythm) is not in fact the rhythm, as one might assume, but actually the bass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bassline). Similarly the bass serves a purpose closer to that which the treble (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treble) would in more traditional musical forms. Nate displays his bravado by claiming that individuals with equivalent knowledge could not even attempt to approach his level of lyrical mastery. Nate goes on to note that if any third party smokes as he does, they would find themselves in a state of intoxication (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intoxication) almost daily (from Nate's other works, it can be inferred that the substance referenced is marijuana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marijuana)[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Regulate_%28song%29&oldid=386691435#cite_note-6)). Nate concludes his delineation of the night by issuing a threat to "busters," suggesting that he and Warren will further "regulate" any potential incidents in the future (presumably by engaging their antagonists with small arms fire).

Absolutely grew up on Nate Dogg. Obviously know all the singles that he's been on .. but I always loved the 213 cd, The Hard Way, that he did with Snoop Dogg and Warren G.. easily one of my top 10 rap albums of all time. I love that cd and he's a big part of why. Really sad there will never be another proper 213 album now.

So we're three months into the year now. Top 5 Hip-Hop releases (albums/mixtapes)?

For me:

1. Saigon - The Greatest Story Never Told (Ridiculous the number of great tracks on this record - real staying power)
2. Raekwon - Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang
3. Pusha T - Fear Of God
4. Frank Ocean - Nostalgia/Ultra
5. Talib Kweli - Gutter Rainbows

And song of the year is clearly Yonkers.

I've heard good things about the Pharoahe Monch record but haven't had a chance to listen yet.

Biggest let down:
Lasers.

Cannot WAIT for:
Goblin.
Curren$y - Muscle Car Chronicles

Don't give a fuck about at this point:
Detox

I pretty much agree with you, Ringo. My favorite releases so far have been Saigon, Pusha T, and Frank Ocean.

Raekwon, Jet Age of Tomorrow, and the Money Making Jam Boys mixtape are all up there as well...

Lasers was most definitely a let down. I don't even really like "Words I Never Said" anymore, I can't remember the last time I touched that album..

Don't forget Curren$y's Covert Coup, which is being released as a free download on 4/20, entirely produced by The Alchemist.. should be stellar.

Just grabbed the new Ill Bill & Vinnie Paz album. With those two, you know you're at in for something decent at the very least..

Also, since a lot of you seem to share my enthusiasm regarding Frank Ocean, I figured this may be of some interest..

Before he was Frank Ocean, he was Lonny Breaux, an artist signed to Def Jam who ghostwrote for people like Justin Bieber and Brandy. Well, he never had a chance to put out an album and grew upset with the label politics, so he became Frank Ocean and dropped his album for free. But, here's a nifty collection someone put together of 42 tracks from his Lonny Breaux days. Enjoy..

Top 3 would be the same as yours Ringo except I'd flip Raekwon and Saigon, and that's probably as far as I'd go. I love how Rae has resurrected his solo career with these last two albums and is keeping the Wu-Tang spirit alive and fresh (unlike say Ghostface who's still putting out good albums but has mostly gone away from the Wu style and sound). I'd probably be happier if Rae was exec-producing the next Wu-Tang album than if RZA was (not that they're even working on it or anything).

There's nothing wrong with Gutter Rainbows, but it sounds like a very generic Kweli album to me and after a couple listens I was done with it. Kweli's flow, which doesn't really change up very much, is getting kinda stale and unlike Ear Drum or RPMs the production on GR doesn't really pop.

Ringo
April 1st, 2011, 1:59 PM
Yeah, I just threw Gutter Rainbows in at the end there because I found it be pretty solid and nothing offensive. Hopefully if everything goes to plan it won't be in my top 10 by the end of the year.

From Mr Ocean

"alrite. alrite. let’s get this out in the open. the only songs that i, myself, frank ocean, have ever released are…’pyrite’, ‘acura integurl’ & of course the songs included on ‘nostalgia, ultra’. all other songs are on the internet as a result of record industry email hacks/leaks that happened some years back. several of these songs i had no hand in writing. i only laid reference vox on em because i was being paid. the rest are incomplete ideas, reference songs that were sent out for placement on other artists. records that were never intended to represent me. notwithstanding, i am a chill bro. as well as a sage/zen master in training. so im not angry or anything. i just had to let it at least be known. enjoy."

I don't like the high pitched thing he does but his flow is amazing. I'm a total Donald Glover mark though.

"I can actually make the argument, seriously, that, Yo, I'm better than all y'all," he boasted. "You have people who can say that. Jay-Z can say that. Eminem can say that. Canibus can say that--if we are going line for line. If you want to relate me to the newer cats, let's go. Let's go line for line and bar for bar. If it's all about spitting and metaphors and MCing and lyrics and entendres, I will eat 99 percent of you dudes up." - Lupe Fiasco

What an odd statement. Saying Lasers is dope, noting that Lupe gives props to Jay and Em, then complaining about too much mainstream talk. You're all over the place with that one.

It's true, a wrestling forum is probably not the place to look for lengthy underground hip hop discussion. Sorry to disappoint.

So guys... Clipse came to my town on Saturday, along with a bunch of other guys (Tiron, Nickelus F, Phile Ade)... and big Snoop came Monday... both shows were really amazing. I'd give Clipse the edge mostly because I've been dying to see them, and I'm a huge fan of the lyrical shit, but Snoop definitely killed it with the party vibe. That guy has hit after hit after hit, he could literally never put any music out ever again and just tour off of his past singles. Monster of a catalog.

How has he brought any attention to himself? DJ Premier, Royce, and Budden brought the attention to Canibus and he simply replied to all of them. Premo and Bis talked it out, but obviously Royce and Budden don't have the maturity to do that. I think you are off-base here.

Ras specifically hasn't had Bis' back, probably because he sees where the money is and it is with Shady Records and a collab with Slaughterhouse. I feel Kurupt might have the same viewpoint. I wish at least Priest would make a statement backing up Canibus, because he has always been anti-industry. Oh well, the truth needs to be heard and I respect Bis now more than ever for exposing people for who they are. Just sucks when people automatically think this was started by him, same as with the LL and Eminem situations. They see a stupid Youtube label such as DJ PREMIER DISS and assume Bis went off his rocker again.
