Paul Wall has some decent stuff .. not a lot, but some. A guy I work with told me about that Homeboy Sandman cd too. He's into all kinds of underground shit. I think I'll check it out.

Bert
July 11th, 2010, 6:15 PM
Okay, clearly our tastes are a bit different. You post Paul Wall CD's, I'll post what I enjoy. You listened to one song and somehow formed an opinion on an entire album. At least now I know whose posts to ignore :)

And "best"? I said my favorite..... nowhere in my post do I see the word "best".

I don't like Paul Wall. I posted the CD because someone posted one of the singles and I was just contributing. I was still going to give it a listen and see if my opinion changed, but I doubt it. "Favorite album of 2010" Best is implied. Why would the shittiest album of 2010 be your favorite?

Dubya
July 11th, 2010, 6:38 PM
Favorite and best aren't the same thing. You can acknowledge that something is the best, without it being your favorite. 2Pac may have been one of the best rappers ever, but he's not a favorite of mine.

Airborn

Yeah, on the contrary, I'd rank 2pac as one of my very favorites, but would hardly call him the best.

Other way around for most people, he was an average technical rapper who got by on pure emotion and anger.

Aye, was going to say the same thing.

Fro
July 13th, 2010, 11:27 AM
But Pac was still one of the best rappers of all time. I think this discussion jumped tracks from favorite vs best to technical vs meaningful/poetic lyricism. Pac wasn't the most lyrical rapper in the sense of stringing totether multi-syllable rhymes, but like Simon said he made up for it by putting incredible amounts of meaning and emotion in his words. Similarly, I'd say Q-Tip was never one to blow you away with his lyricism but he's still one of the greats.

I have been neglecting a heap of music I have downloaded. I am listening to distant relatives and I have to say I quite like it. Nas has always been one of my favourite Emcees because he is both a genius yet very very lazy which is how I love my sportsmen and my rappers.

Why do you say Nas is lazy?

i don't think he always gives it his all. He is very talented probably one of the most talented ever for mine. If you listen to a track like Halftime which he wrote in his late teens you can see that he is a hiphop prodigy and he is easily one of the best ever.

I also think he tends to come up with awesome concepts and just not really be bothered with the whole execution of it.

Still he is my favourite rapper.....probably.

Fair enough, but I'd say Distant Relatives is anything but lazy. That album is everything a Nas and Jr Gong collaboration can and should be.

Nigger and Hip Hop Is Dead... you may have a point there. Although I like them both neither really lives up to the hype of the concept.

Dubya

I kinda get the same feeling with Busta Rhymes.

Agreed. You listen to some Busta tracks and its just mind-blowing good and then others are just mind-blowing horrible. Busta has always been kinda hit or miss though, to be honest. I think Genesis and When Disaster Strikes are the only ones I can listen to all the way through and even they have 2-3 annoyingly horrible tracks.

I agree on Nas too. Like with Busta, some of his stuff is just so good that it makes some of his other stuff look pretty shit.. even though sometimes, its still leagues above other rappers.

People are like flipping out over the domestic abuse in this video .. it was on my homepage (comcast.net) news section.

I'm immediately thinking of that old retarded Dixie Chicks video where the husband beats the wife and then she kills him .. but that was okay cuz it wasn't Eminem.

Yeah, its destroying the charts. I keep seeing new lyrics from the album on my facebook as people's statuses.. makes me laugh cuz I've had the album for like 2 months now. Lol.

Agree with Hammer totally. Nicky Minaj trying desperately to be the 2010 Lil' Kim and she's failing miserably.

The entire Young Money crew, aside from Drake, are complete utter shit. They will go the way of Diddy's Da Band in a year. Remember them? Didn't think so.

Mark Hammer

LOVING that Monster track. Jay-Z is back to old form there and Ye is killing everything he's on right about now. His album will be off the hook.

Nicky Minaj isn't that bad. The voices on Monster are annoying but the verse isn't bad overall and she's pretty easily the best female rapper currently, having put out some good guest verses recently.

Mark Hammer
August 29th, 2010, 9:23 PM

From: Nas
To: LA Reid, Steve Bartels, Steve Gawley, Michael Seltzer, Joseph Borrino, Chris Hicks
Subject: PUT MY SHIT OUT!

Peace to all,

With all do respect to you all, Nas is NOBODY’s slave. This is not the 1800′s, respect me and I will respect you.

I won’t even tap dance around in an email, I will get right into it. People connect to the Artist @ the end of the day, they don’t connect with the executives. Honestly, nobody even cares what label puts out a great record, they care about who recorded it. Yet time and time again its the executives who always stand in the way of a creative artist’s dream and aspirations. You don’t help draw the truth from my deepest and most inner soul, you don’t even do a great job @ selling it. The #1 problem with DEF JAM is pretty simple and obvious, the executives think they are the stars. You aren’t…. not even close. As a matter of fact, you wish you were, but it didn’t work out so you took a desk job. To the consumer, I COME FIRST. Stop trying to deprive them! I have a fan base that dies for my music and a RAP label that doesn’t understand RAP. Pretty fucked up situation

This isn’t the 90′s though. Beefing with record labels is so 15 years ago. @ this point I just need you all to be very clear where I stand and how I feel about “my label.” I could go on twitter or hot 97 tomorrow and get 100,000 protesters @ your building but I choose to walk my own path my own way because since day one I have been my own man. I did business with Tommy Mottola and Donnie Einer, two of the most psycho dudes this business ever created. I worked well with them for one major reason……. they believed in me. The didn’t give a fuck about what any radio station or magazine said….those dudes had me.

Lost Tapes is a movement and a very important set up piece for my career as it stands. I started this over 5 years ago @ Columbia and nobody knew what it was or what it did but the label put it out as an LP and the fans went crazy for it and I single handlely built a new brand of rap albums. It’s smart and after 5 years it’s still a head of the game. This feels great and you not feeling what I’m feeling is disturbing. Don’t get in the way of my creativity. We are aligned with the stars here, this is a movement. There is a thing called KARMA that comes to haunt you when you tamper with the aligning stars. WE ARE GIVING THE PEOPLE EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT. Stop throwing dog shit on a MAGICAL moment.

You don’t get another Nas recording that doesn’t count against my deal….PERIOD! Keep your bullshit $200,000.00 fund. Open the REAL budget. This is a New York pioneers ALBUM, there ain’t many of us. I am ready to drop in the 4th quarter. You don’t even have shit coming out! Stop being your own worst enemy. Let’s get money!

-N.Jones

Saigon joined Suburban Noize

Saigon has teamed up with Kottonmouth Kings and Suburban Noize Records to release his five year-old, would-have-been Atlantic debut, with Just Blaze production.

With Stat Quo's Statlanta dropping this summer, Saigon's The Greatest Story Never Told might be the most delayed album in Hip Hop outside of Dr. Dre's Detox. Since the New York emcee signed with Atlantic Records and scheduled the album for a 2005 release, a lot has happened. Sai has quit the Rap game via MySpace, he's released a handful of other albums - including one made in 24 hours, shifted labels, and had a child.

Now free of Atlantic Records, Saigon has told his fans on Facebook that "the Full Length LP is coming February but I cant make my Nation wait that long.." What he was referring to with not wanting his fans to wait is that he had previously announced that he would be releasing an EP next week.

"New EP coming NEXT WEEK 'The Yardfather's Prologue' is the tentative title.... I need a title for my new EP so if U think U have a dope title... Send it in.. This is all new music.. LETS GO Saigon NATION.."

Just yesterday, HipHopDX published a story with frequent Saigon collaborator Statik Selektah. He told DX, "It’s funny, Saigon called me like 10 minutes ago talking about his new deal. I don’t know if I’m even supposed to talk about it, but the [The Greatest Story Never Told] album [he did] with Just Blaze is coming out. I’m not about to say on what label or when, but it’s coming out like soon."

The Greatest Story Never Told is slated to come out on Suburban Noize Records and will feature production from Just Blaze. Previously, Suburban Noize, owned by Kottonmouth Kings' Brad Daddy X, has released projects from La Coka Nostra, X-Clan's Brother J and Potluck.

All of the progress has apparently sped up Dre’s usually methodical recording process.

“I see the finish line right now,” Dre added. “I’m wrapping it up. I need about two or three more songs, and hopefully I’ll start the mixing process at the end of next month. From that point I’m about 30 days out. One of the reasons it was taking so long was because I felt like I was doing it more out of obligation as opposed to actually feeling it.”

So probably February/March I guess.

Me too. That mixtape should be great. I heard he's releasing it as a Mixtape because the label won't push a new album out this soon. That's kind of some bullshit on their part.

So, a track by the All City Chess Club came out and I somehow missed it, for those unaware the ACCC is Asher Roth + Blu + B.o.B + Charles Hamilton + The Cool Kids + Diggy + Lupe Fiasco.

Loved MM, absolutely loved it.

It's just classical Canibus. You can hear his frustrations and he vents his mind. He still brings that rawness that he just has with mic presence and I still find it an incredible joy to listen too. A lot of it is the usual love for hip hop and it's supposedly weakened state. I also noticed this is somewhat dumbed down...for Canibus, he still comes with some lyrical tongue twisting and mindbending lyrics.

One thing, DSK and other guests are a bit weak on the album and they just eat up Bis' mic time.

I'm loving Hip-Hop Black Ops...pure quality.

Bis is so underrated...it shocks me how much hip hop downplays his talent.

Top 15 Hip-Hop Albums/EPs/Mixtapes 2010.

1. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
2. Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty
3. Drake - Thank Me Later
4. The Roots - How I Got Over
5. Tyler, The Creator - Bastard
6. Curren$y - Pilot Talk I/II
7. Das Racist - Sit Down, Man
8. Rick Ross - Teflon Don
9. Earl Sweatshirt - EARL
10. Freeway & Jake One - The Stimulus Package
11. Freddie Gibbs - Str8 Killa EP
12. Eminem - Recovery
13. Nas & Damian Marley - Distant Relatives
14. Shabazz Palaces - Of Light
15. Waka Flocka Flame - Flockaveli

Kanye and Big Boi are classic. Drake and The Roots are easy and fun with lots of catchy tunes. Tyler and Earl are the super talented but somewhat thematically immature kids from Odd Future who will have a huge 2011. Das Racist might be nerdy or whatever but it's GOOD. Gibbs and Shabazz are very promising. Curren$y, Freeway/Jake and Ross delivered really good "proper Hip-Hop" albums. Eminem and Nas/Marley are decent releases from big stars. Waka is utterly ridiculous but enjoyable at times.

Just about to play Ghostface for the first time. Also got the Minaj, Aloe Blacc and MellowHype albums to listen to.

For me ..

1. B.o.B. - adventures of bobby ray
2. Eminem - recovery
3. Kanye West - my beautiful dark twisted fantasy
4. Drake - thank me later
5. Big Boi - sir lucious left foot: the son of chico dusty
6. The Roots - how I got over
7. Kid Cudi - Man on the Moon II: the legend or mr. rager
8. Bun B. - trill o.g.
9. Rick Ross - teflon don
10. Nicki Minaj - pink friday (I'm with ya, Fro .. I'd be a fuckin liar if I didn't put this cd on there.. it definitely dominated my lincoln for a minute)
(11.) Wu-Massacre .. I really liked this cd a lot, but its just so damn short.

Really didn't like the B.o.B. and never got around to listening to Cudi. Nothing he's done since that first mixtape has impressed me at all.

Big fan of Bun-B but I think Trill O.G. was a bit of a damp squib to be honest. I'll give it another listen though.

The Wu-Massacre thing was okay actually. Probably ended up underrating it in the end. Wouldn't have made my top 20 releases though.

Definitely listen to Curren$y, Tyler, Earl and Gibbs.

Kanye and Big Boi are classic.

Agreed. These two stand comfortably alone as the best albums of the year.

(11.) Wu-Massacre .. I really liked this cd a lot, but its just so damn short.

Yeah, it's a good album but at 30 minutes it should have been an EP. Still probably would have been my #12.

The B.o.B album was really good, for southern rap at least. I was turned off at first by how much he sounds like Cee-Lo but looking back on it, I actually like it more than any Cee-Lo album (though the first Gnarls Barkley album is right there with it).

Kid Cudi sucks. He has a good sense for music and I think his albums are musically strong, but fuck he's awful on the mic.

eh, i like listening to cudi, mostly cause i love his voice. before this very second, i've never even thought to rate him as an MC.

See, I didn't really dig on the Cudi album much either at first .. but it really grew on me over time. I don't think he's completely awful on the mic.. I don't think he's amazing, but again .. I dunno .. I think he's going for something different.. and it works for me.

I love me some Bun B, ringo . . Trill O.G. has some sick beats on it. They sound oh-so-good in my car. I bumped the shit out of that cd for a few weeks. I don't really like a ton of THAT style rap, but that cd stuck with me.

I wasn't going to give B.o.B. my top pick at first, but the more I thought about it .. I always came back to that cd. I'd get a new cd and listen to it for a bit and then put B.o.B. back in til I got a new disc .. It's a fun cd and it just barely edged out Em for me cuz after the initial month or 2 of non-stop-listening to the Em cd .. I haven't really listened to it much at all since summer.. and again, I kept coming back to B.o.B.. and Drake.. listened to his cd a lot too, but I liked Em and Kanye more than Drake.

I didn't mean just as a rapper, I hate his voice when signing too. It's too dull and monotone.

So yeah. H.A.M. pretty shit. Not even a massive fan of the beat, even though it's the most interesting part of the song (thank Lex Luger for that). Everything else is just bad. Well I guess Jay-Z's verse looks gold compared to Ye's.

Dear God. It has an official date.

Just Blaze and Dr. Dre briefly joined forces to make an announcement for the looming release of Detox.

In an online video, Just Blaze allows Dr. Dre to reveal that Detox will hit stores on April 20.

Dre says, "4/20 - 4/20, baby, I'm coming!"

The album was originally set for a February release date.
