Definitely the top one if you don't have it. I haven't heard the whole Deck album yet. The Wayne is pretty meh but it's essentially him trying to do an alternative rap album a la Kanye's 808s with more rock oriented beats, so if that sounds good...

Nas and Damian “JR Gong” Marley are already good friends. They collaborated on the mesmerizing cut "Road to Zion ," off Marley's Welcome to Jamrock. The twosome's debut joint, titled Distant Relatives, is a kingdom of a different color. The album conflates Marley's lonstanding dub-rock aesthetic and Nas' flow. Nas told MTV News that the Distant Relative project stems from his recent efforts in Africa: “We tryin' to build some schools in Africa… and trying to build empowerment.” Marley and his brother, Stephen, produced amuch of the album. The duo recorded the disc with a live band in in L.A. and Miami, with Marley doing most of the production. Proceeds from the album will go to building a school in the Congo and tracks like "Count Your Blessings" reflect on the continent's ongoing unrest.

Kanye West is ensconced in his Diamond Head, Hawaii home and recording studio, putting the final touches on his forthcoming album with guest rappers like Q-Tip, RZA and Pete Rock, numerous reports have confirmed. A source close to the project -- which is tentatively titled "Good Ass Job" according to G.O.O.D. Music artist Big Sean -- says it will be released in June.

Q-Tip confirmed he's working with Kanye in an interview with Brooklyn Bodega. "I just try to work with people who I admire or whom I think has got it," he told the website. "So right now I'm working on Nas' shit, about to work with Kanye on his shit."

According to a report on Roc4Life.com, both RZA and Pete Rock were in Hawaii recently recording with Kanye. RZA appeared onstage at a Nas concert in Honolulu on March 19 and a tweet from former Senior VP of A&R at LOUD Records Schott Free suggests that Pete Rock was in Hawaii with Kanye as well. On March 9, Free told Pete Rock, "Enjoy Hawaii, I'm sure you and Kanye' are killing it" and then wrote "@QtipTheAbstract on his weezy! Hot."

Pete Rock took to Twitter to deny the allegations that he was working with Kanye and claimed his trip was "just a vacation," though he did allude to a secret project in response to Free, writing "Pls dont mention that on here scott,its all goody but i gotta keep a closed lid on it. "In the past, artists who've joined Kanye in the studio have been sworn to secrecy, according to producer No I.D., who has been confirmed as one of West's collaborators.

Q-Tip, RZA, and Pete Rock are three producers credited with pioneering New York hip-hop, so their appearances would suggest the album has a traditional East Coast sound. Common told Music Mix that Kanye and No I.D. are following a similar direction with his upcoming album, "The Believer," which Common described as "raw hip-hop.".

I'm surprised you have MVP so high up, that's one of my least favorite Primo beats.

It's somewhat difficult to distinguish between his best beats and his best songs. Either way, NY State of Mind is probably tops on my list.

He produced the whole album Tha Blaqprint by Blaq Poet last year. I think that's his boy now. I've only heard one song off it ("Hate" ft. Nore) and it's good but Blaq didn't exactly jump off the track. I've been meaning to get the whole album tho so this is a good reminder. He also did a handful of tracks on the 2009 releases of his regular collabos: MOP, Royce and CNN.

Relapse 2 renamed Recovery with a June 22 release date.


Last night, Eminem’s Twitter displayed a message saying that Relapse 2 was dead, presumably because of a name change. Apparently Relapse 2 was supposed to be constructed of all the song that didn’t make it onto the first Relapse, but then they went ahead and threw those first few songs from the second project onto "The Refill" once Relapse 2 started to become a full body of work. This name change reflects that this is now a project that stands on its own, but is still in a way linked to Em’s last album.

The first single is produced by Jim Jonsin, and as of right now, the album also has production by Just Blaze, Boi-1da and DJ Khalil.

Btw "Hell Breaks Loose" from the Refill has been on pretty heavy rotation on my iPod for a while now. That song kicks ass.

Legendary rapper Guru has died after a battle with cancer. He was just 43.

Born in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood, Keith Elam was a member of the duo Gang Starr, and is considered one of the pioneers of hip hop-jazz crossover.

His stage name, Guru, is actually an acronym for Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal and/or the less often used God is Universal; he is the Ruler Universal.

According to reports, Guru passed away yesterday, having suffered from the grave, malicious illness for over a year and after numerous special treatments.


Guru always tried to keep his harrowing cancer diagnosis in private but in early 2010 he had to admit himself to hospital due to serious effects caused by it.

While in hospital with terminal cancer, Guru wrote a letter, which was provided by Solar, to his fans addressing his illness, career, family and loved ones.

ever since first being introduced to gangstarr, guru has been one of my favorite mc's. smooth as silk flow and intelligent, provoking wordplay coupled with premier's beats just really got me hooked into hip hop and sinked it deep, showing me just what kind of spectrum the genre could pass through. wu-tang is what started me into loving it, but gangstarr is what made me appreciate all that hip hop was and could be.

After a lengthy battle with cancer, Gang Starr rapper Guru-- born Keith Elam-- passed away yesterday, MTV reports. He was 43. In March, Guru suffered a heart attack that left him in a coma for a brief period.

MTV quotes a letter that Guru allegedly wrote in the hospital. It highlights the rapper's charity work with the Each One Counts Foundation, praises Guru's "loyal best friend, partner, and brother" Solar-- his primary post-Gang Starr producer-- and apparently disavows his ties with Premier.

"I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over seven years and want nothing to do with him in death," reads the letter, which was provided by Solar.

According to the missive, Guru is survived by a son, KC.

Guru wrote, "I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting."

obviously being a 26 year old black fella i have always been into rap music, was into it pretty heavy until lately but over the last 2 years i've not been up on any of it and i only listen to my old music on itunes these days in the background. but i'm gutted to hear about Guru, this thread is the first thing i saw on it and i assumed someone was taking the piss but obviously not. Gangstarr made the best "real" (i hate that term) hiphop of all time for me, got all their albums. Dj Premier was best producer of that style of upbeat new york hiphop and Guru was a really entertaining rapper with a distinct voice that fitted the beats perfectly. i'll be playing Moment of Truth and the Best Of Gangstarr while i do some work on my computer the rest of this afternoon.

:D yer Moment of Truth is a nice album. i got into them quite late, around 2001 or so. long after they'd already done all their best work. got the big double disc album on sale oneday (i forget what it's called but it's got the silver cover and a separtate booklet for both CDs) and then went and got the rest over the coming years. my best mate also got into them the same time and we'd always have the music on while being on the playstation or drinking cans etc.

just ituned it, that's the name. full clip: decade of gangstarr. one of the best albums ever easily. no headbanging stuff just proper brilliant beats and a great rapper for 2 or 3 hours.

I believe the album Tim is talking about is Full Clip, which was Gangstarr's best hits of a decade album. Like Tim said, for me Premo WAS the New York sound along with RZA and GZA at the peak of their powers.

As Simon and I have discussed in passing, Premo is regarded as one of the best, if not THE best producer that has ever graced the rap game. The thing that makes this all so sad is that no matter who rapped over Premo's monster beats, be it Biggie or Nas, it never had the same feel or dopeness to it than when Guru was there spitting his bars. This fact alone goes to show just how much of a dope MC he was and how much of a inspirational and important group Gangstarr was.

I often think Black Thought of Roots is somewhat in the same boat as Guru in that we all know how amazing they are, but it just doesn't have that feel until they are reunited with the producer that knows how to fit their rhymes. Unfortunately as a hip-hop fan it has become cliche and tired to proclaim your love for an artist when they untimely pass as in the case of Dilla and Proof (I don't include Pac and Biggie as that's a whole other arguement and debate in itself) but this passing of Guru is very sad. We never really had a full explanation as to why the group disbanded and his final letter still leaves a sour taste in the mouth. I was a casual fan of the Jazzmattaz series that Guru released and his 'Loungin' song was my song for a hot minute. But again, it comes back to the point that he never sounded better over Premo's beats. For me his death mirrors Dillas, in that they were both amazing at what they did but fell victim to illness, thus taking them away from a community (in a hip hop sense) that is all too familiar with the passing of it's greats.

I had the absolute pleasure of seeing Gangstarr live many years ago and meeting them both for a brief few minutes. It is now an experience that has become a privilege. Of course I wish Guru to rest in peace, but thank you for the songs, the albums and the lyrics. Rest in peace to an artist who will more than likely be overlooked in years to come but from this hip-hop head he will not be forgotten.

Probably not the best time to say it and obviously no disrespect is meant, but in honesty I preferred much of his work for other artists, for no reason other than they were superior rappers. I agree that Guru's smooth flow suited much of Premo's more relaxed beats, but I just can't look past the work he did with Nas, Common and Jay and honestly say I preferred the Gang Starr stuff.

That isn't to say that the music Gang Starr made wasn't fantastic, of course. One summer in the early 00's I bought Moment Of Truth for £3 from HMV, having known little about Gang Starr beyond their new stuff like Battle and Right Where You Stand (which, incidentally, are up there with my favourite Gang Starr tracks)...it was just a random pick-up, I'm not sure I even associated DJ Premier with Gang Starr at that point. But fuck me sideways that CD didn't leave my changer for months.

I raised myself on hip-hop through the more hard-hitting sounds of 2pac, Biggie, Big Pun and the more recent work of Jay-Z and Nas, plus some UK sounds like Blak Twang and Fallacy...prior to that I was too immature for the more relaxed but less immediate styles of early Nas/Jay, Common and the like.

And then I listened to Gang Starr, and it clicked. That album is tits, I'd definitely say it was my favourite of their work, although I know this isn't a popular opinion. The samples were filth, Guru went over every beat like water and it was just a dream to listen to - lovely to have playing on a sonic level as background music, even better if you were tuned in and listening to Guru rather than hearing him.

I was listening to Moment Of Truth (the track) earlier today and it's quite sad to listen to it now, very poignant indeed.

R.I.P. to one of the underappreciated kings of the game. It will be interesting to see if his premature death raises him to a higher level of respect which he deserves.

Good shit, can't wait for Recovery.

Having now listened to the B.o.B. album, it's pretty good. None of it seems all that original though.. if you told me this was the newest Cee-Lo album, I might believe you. He blends a lot of familiar southern hip hop styles into one. That said, it's very crisp and well executed. I like it more than the Kid Cudi album which while more original was somewhat dull and hard for me to get into.

RZA Working On GZA's 'Liquid Swords 2'


Legendary producer RZA has announced via his Twitter page (@RZAWU) that he will be producing Liquid Swords 2, sequel to GZA's classic album.

"IT'S TRUE: 'LIQUID SWORDS 2' PRODUCED BY THE ABBOT RZA COMING FALL 2010. WHO'S READY FOR THE WU? BONG BONG," wrote RZA, whose body of work producing for the Wu from 1993 to 1997 is considered among the best in Hip Hop history. Among the albums produced in that time period was GZA's Liquid Swords, which is heralded to this day as one of Rap's finest albums.

The announcement comes after the recent critical and commercial successes of other Wu-Tang sequels: Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...II and Method Man and Redman's Blackout! 2. The Wu brand has come back strong as of late, with well-received releases in Chamber Music and Wu-Massacre, as well as others.

There is currently no set release date for Liquid Swords 2.

I just sat there listening to some crap PIMP remix, thinking it was a quirky Eminem intro waiting for it to drop.

Now I've heard the proper thing it's pretty solid. I don't like the chorus, it's standard really, nothing special. I do love Eminem when he's in full flow though so I like the verses a lot. Not a bad start, I'm hoping it picks up a bit for the rest of the album though.

I actually think Eminem's had some great skits over the years. I almost always listen to the Steve Berman skit that precedes "The Way I Am" before listening to the song. I love how it sets up the song. "You know why Dre's album was so successful? He's rapping about big screen TVs, blunts, 40s and bitches. You're rapping about homosexuals and vicodin." :lol:

Same goes for the skit that precedes "Soldier", the song isn't as good without it.

The Ken Kaniff ones are just awful though.

the only people that ever did skits well were Wu Tang on 'that' 1st generation of albums lah :D. i never skip them even though i've heard each one at least 500 times or more. the had their own way of talking and own slang, so them talking shit for 2 minutes was still entertaining. and built anticipation for the next classic song. usually the beat just came straight in after the talking or a short kung fu movie sample, and it was just fucking brilliant. or, obviously, the start of liquid swords. not only the best skit but the best album intro of all time in any genre of music.

Yeah I'm not worried about those specific guest spots but I do think all the info that's come out about Recovery (i.e. the producer lineup) as well as the spots Em himself has been doing (Wayne, B.o.B., Drake) should tell us that he's going for a more mainstream hip hop feel for this album. It's possible that it'll be a little soft - more friendly to the masses but disappointing to the hardcore fans - but I think he can come up with a nice middle ground. It's definitely a major changeup for him to utilize Just Blaze, Boi 1da and DJ Khalil so I'm very intrigued to see how it turned out.

Definitely feeling the new Reflection Eternal right now.

Drake's album is pretty underwhelming if you ask me. "Fireworks" and "Light Up" are my favorites right now, the Jeezy track is cool too, but I just expected a bit more I guess. Lines like "shallow nigga but deep enough to have gone swimmin'" and "I'm a star, no spangled banner" make me cringe, and there was nothing quite as impressive on the album as "Say What's Real" from So Far Gone.

So I got a chance to listen to the Drake. It's not too bad. The thing that bugs me about him are his hooks. He just rambles too much in them. Like the song with Alicia Keys, why does he have to sing the first part? He still has good lines, but it's just not as good as it should be. Not horrible, but not that good.

Just downloaded the Em.. Proud to say I'm up to song 4, and have yet to hear the Triumph dog voice. Good for him. Pretty good so far though. If you don't like it, take a deep breath and realize that it's just music. Nod your head and have a good time :yes:

I quite like the Eminem album, it's a whole lot better than Relapse was. Gotta love him shitting on that album throughout Recovery, I especially liked the "Last two albums didn't count, Encore I was on drugs, Relapse I was flushin' em out" line. Some interesting hooks on here, some work and some don't. I really like the female vocals on "25 To Life" and "Space Bound". Subject matter is definitely a lot more focused than Relapse, I like the realistic/introspective stuff a lot more than the pointless shock value. The production is also pretty interesting since Eminem has only had Dre and his own production in the past. I think it works for the most part. Just Blaze has some nice shit on here, although that Haddaway sample was a little confusing. I have a feeling "Love The Way You Lie" will be one of the, if not the, biggest songs of the summer.

On small thing I really like on the Drake album, the transition from the end of "The Resistance" into "Over". Nice touch.

I like Eminem just fine when he puts out a dope album. I love SSLP, like MMLP, and love TES. But while this one was better than the last two, it still isn't going into any rotation for me. There are some decent verses, but I just don't like the way he sounds anymore. And most of the choruses are awful. Revolutions Per Minute and Distant Relatives are definitely in my future rotation, this clearly isn't.

Marshall will never top The Eminem Show in my opinion.

It's not perfect but lyrically this is Em at his best in years. This CD plus the verses on Forever, Drop The World and Airplanes show that he DOES still have it in him.

1. “Cold Wind Blows” – This might be my favorite song on the album. Great beat and Em flows over it perfectly, the first verse especially which opens the album up with a bang. He sounds good on the chorus here even though it’s sing songy and it sounds like he’s trying to imitate Justin Timberlake. 10
2. “Talkin’ 2 Myself” feat. Kobe – Decent beat, good verses (especially the 3rd). I like the topic matter with him breaking down his status in hip hop and how he fell from the top with his last 2 albums. The hook sounds soft for Em but it’s good for an R&B hook. 8
3. “On Fire” - Good beat but the song feels uninspired. This is one of those songs where he doesn’t actually talk about anything and just spits random rhymes, and he admits it. It’s a filler song but it’s good enough not to cut from the album. 7
4. “Won’t Back Down” feat. Pink – This is dope, don’t deny. The rock and roll beat is perfect for Em and Pink sounds good on the hook. Rappers saying “get it?” then repeating their double entendre is usually lame, but the “calm batman” line actually warrants it, I think. That took me a couple listens to get. 9
5. “W.T.P.” - The generic party track. It’s not bad though, the beat is very danceable and I like his flow. A rhyme like “so ladies if your bellybutton’s not an innie then I’m outtie, now hop in my minivan let’s get rowdy” is just a throwaway for him but he delivers it so perfectly that it sticks with you. 7.5
6. “Going Through Changes” – This is essentially the continuation of Déjà Vu off Relapse, same topic matter and tone but the beat and hook aren’t quite as good. Déjà Vu was great, this one is just really good. 8.5
7. “Not Afraid” – I don’t know why some people were down on this as the single – it’s a good song. He lays on the metaphors pretty thick but they’e pretty good for the most part. 8
8. “Seduction” – I really like the subtle piano part of this beat which gives it that eerie feel. Cool song that sounds distinct from the rest of the album. 8.5
9. “No Love” feat. Lil Wayne – Holy shit what a track, seriously. This will be the biggest song off the album and a gigantic hit, I reckon. I love how Wayne and Em’s verses both get gradually get more intense. Both are in top form. 10
10. “Space Bound” – The hook sounds like something off the B.o.B. or Cudi album, in a good way. Em fits his verses to it perfectly and I love the bridge at the end. I can’t believe this is a Dre beat (according to Wiki), it definitely doesn’t sound like it. Add this to the long list of songs that could be big singles. 9
11. “Cinderella Man” – I like the simple but hard hitting beat, but the “cinderalla man” that repeats over and over is annoying and makes the song feel stunted, which is too bad because it could have been really good. This is the only song that got worse for me on repeat listens. I feel like it could have been a 9 if it was just mixed differently. 7
12. “25 to Life” - Rapping about hip hop like it’s your girlfriend is nothing original but he does it very well here. 8
13. “So Bad” – Signature Em over Dre which they can keep doing forever as far as I’m concerned. Nothing amazing but it sounds great all around. 8

15. “Love the Way You Lie” feat. Rihanna – This is another one that will displease people who can’t get into the R&B hook and soft beat, but for what it is it’s done very well. It should be a big radio hit like someone already said and it’s probably a lot better than the songs it will pass on the charts. 7.5
16. “You’re Never Over” – I like the Proof-inspired verses although it’s not exactly his best writing. He sounds really bad singing on the hook which makes you appreciate the people he brought in for other songs. Still not a bad song. 7
17. “Here We Go” – Good beat by Havoc and a good flow to close out the album. 8

While the singers he brought in for the hooks do a very good job, there’s certainly a lot of them. It would have been great if he used a few more samples in place of singers - something along the lines of “Murder, Murder” would have been a great change of pace. Great album though, I see this as his equivalent to Tha Carter 3 with how he went mainstream but really perfected the sound. My least favorite songs are still good, still listenable. I expect it to get eaten up by the major critics and wouldn’t be shocked to see it get 5 mics or XXL or whatever, which is more of an indictment of hip hop over the last few years than this album being a classic – it’s not quite that but almost. While it doesn't surpass any of his first three Aftermath releases, it's a close 4th.

I remember when I first heard/saw the video for I Love College and instantly dismissed him as a shit gimmick rapper. That's the only one of genuine note, but there are versions of 4 of the actual album tracks that Andre had performed on in one way or another (minimally in most cases) that had to be completely remixed to remove whatever his participation was from them -- the "with 3000" versions of those tracks are out there now...and from what I can gather, not notably different.

Big Boi changed record labels for his solo career (and wisely so, by all accounts - Andre is expected to do the same) whereas OutKast as a collective are still under previous contract. As such, Jive aren't signing off on allowing Andre to appear in anything but a production role on this or any other Big Boi solo projects (and that'll likely work both ways) -- there's a degree of truth that these collabos could be considered "OutKast reuinions", but this isn't anything that'd massively effect sales of the next OutKast album, so it's pretty much just sour grapes.

I understand OutKast's label's perspective .. we don't want you making money off our group, etc.. but considering how long OutKast have been away.. it would make more sense to just let em' do it so that they get put out there a little more and get some attention. The group (Royce Da 5'9", Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz and Crooked I) still isn't officially signed as of yet, but we asked Royce whether he would ink with Shady as a solo artist if his team is onboard. After all, Royce has been traveling with Marshall, and the two have a long history.

"We haven't talked about that," Royce said of a solo deal with Shady. "Right now, we just chillin'. We're getting back acclimated, being around each other, getting the creative juices flowing. Making sure we're on the same page creatively. We're just gonna focus on the Slaughterhouse album right now. "Man, I haven't thought about it," Royce reiterated about his solo deal. "After I put this next album out, I'm a free agent. So I'm sure it's a possibility. But it's not something we're really thinking about right now. I'm gonna totally focus on the group, because I think [this] sh-- could be something special."

Royce said he's hoping Slaughterhouse can drop a project this year and he can come with a solo opus sometime in 2011. "Depending on when this deal closes, which should be very soon, I think I'm gonna put my focus on the group," he said. "I got a lot of material done for my solo album, but I wanna take my time with it. I'm looking at next year for my album. I've been doing sh-- sporadically. I wanna put all my focus into the Slaughterhouse album first. I would like for my album to catapult off the next Slaughterhouse album. We're gonna cancel everything. We did the last [Slaughterhouse] album so fast, because we was behind the eight ball, time-wise. It ain't gonna be no timeline on this album. We going in, and we gonna keep recording until it's right."

Meanwhile, as Slaughterhouse continue to work on separate projects (Royce just released the mixtape Bar Exam 3 and Ortiz has his Yaowa tape dropping in the next few weeks), the Nine Nickel said Em is making sure they stay active as a collective while they wait on the label paperwork. "Em gave me all types of tracks. Dre beats," Royce said. "Just because the paperwork ain't done don't mean we ain't been working. We definitely been throwing ideas around. [Em] stressed he wants to have a lot of involvement in the project. We want him to be as involved as he wants to be. Anytime he runs an idea by me, I respect him so much, I'm down with it. If he gives me a beat, like, 'Yo, y'all would sound ill on this,' I'm going to record it. That's pretty much what we been doing. He hasn't did no beats and gave me nothing yet, but he has given me a lot of beats from other producers."

Slaughterhouse is a bit different seeing as they are all established artists in their own right. But yeah I reckon the likes of Drake, J. Cole etc will just fade out gradually, they aren't interesting or plain good enough to stay around.

The problem I have with Slaughterhouse is that there's virtually nothing to separate those four MCs from each other. When you think of a classic groups or posse cuts, they're always great because of the contrast in styles - like Wu Tang or Dungeon Family. Slaughterhouse is pretty meh... and they seem to think that paying for a decent beat is selling out.

Joell Ortiz is alright, certainly better than fucking Joe Budden and Crooked I. His update of Ebonics by Big L is awesome, and his track "Hip Hop" is great.

If calling Joell Ortiz better than Joe Budden is a stretch than calling him better than Crooked I is a huge fucking leap. Hip Hop from 2007, yeah it was an alright song. I wouldn't say great.

Looks like you're in the minority on Ortiz. He's got a nice flow and strong lyrics. Far from the weakest element of Slaughterhouse. Crooked I is just meh, I didn't mind the ghetto-orchestra stuff he was doing years ago but beyond that...na.

Really? I like the atmosphere of "Microphone", but I thought it sounded dated and pretty bland (more of a loop than a beat, really).

Ortiz can be identified because he's the guy with the accent, but their cadences and chosen subject matter are all pretty similar.

Production from mostly unknown dudes, besides Psycho Les (Beatnuts) and Ski Beatz (Jay-Z, Camp Lo, etc.)... Homeboy Sandman himself has a real distinct and original style, he doesn't curse and he touches on a lot of topics you won't hear in other rap music. Can't recommend this enough.
