It is without a doubt down to your 'hip-hop taste' or, more specifically, the fact that the emphasis you place on your own credibility won't allow you to like a mainstream R&B act like Chris Brown. First of all, like I've already said, I'm not denying that the track didnt belong on the album. But blaming that on Chris Brown is stupid. You should be blaming whoever it was that decided to put the song in the tracklist, whether thats Nas himself or the label pressuring him to include another RnB track to boost sales. If the track was on L.A.X. or Chris Browns album then no one would have a problem (except you cuz you're not "stuck on" pop music). And no, its not blatantly a club song. How the hell do you play that in the club? "Hero" is more of a club song and even that wouldnt get many plays.
Secondly, I'm not even gonna bother defending his talent. Its there for everyone to see and hear. And the fact that he writes his own lyrics gives him the edge over more than half the other RnB artists who use ghost writers and writing teams. But I'd love to see that list of 20 modern RnB artists that are better than him.

Stick to talking about hip hop cuz you dont have a clue about anything else.

I don't know who Chris Brown is, but the term "R&B" seems to mean something completely different now than it did 30 years ago. And the definitions of words are constantly changing, so we should probably just roll with the punches and admit that, while Usher is no Bill Withers or Marvin Gaye, he's still a R&B artist, and a good one too. I mean, Green Day is a good rock band, that doesn't take anything away from the Beatles.

Seriously now, Chris Brown grew up an hour from my house, I know a few people that went to school with him. He is a talentless hack that writes little to none of his music (regardless of what you might hear or read). He can dance, cool. Ne-Yo can dance better, so can every B-Boy in the history of hip-hop. He puts on a good performance? I would never pay money to see this guy. Like I said, I know a few people who knew him personally, he's a little chump with a stylist that picks out his entire wardrobe. The kid is a joke like PCP smoke.

Then he told a story about how he got mugged selling drugs on his own front porch. After being ripped apart for that, he claimed that it was all a work to show how stupid everyone is here. He antagonized people outside of the asylum and got a 3 day, I believe. When he came back he continued his meltdown in the pic thread and started to 'pimp' his own hip hop shit. When he was warned that advertising is not allowed he went off the deepend and spammed several threads with the links in an obnoxious manner. His sig asked to be banned, and I believe he now is indefinitely.

God, and that's the SHORT version. Think I hit all the pertinent points though.

On topic, I wish I still had a desire to check out new hip hop that slips by the cracks. It's more that I just don't have the time. Haven't really been immersed in the underground of hip hop for about 18 months now so I am fairly clueless to what's been going on.

I'll always get a hold of stuff from my favorite artists but getting any new stuff that I have no knowledge of doesn't really happen anymore.

Do love the Nas album though and I have Buck 65's stuff that came out a few months back on heavy rotation. Of course I am also looking forward to the new album coming out by CANIBUS and I plan on buying the Prolyphic/Reanimator album fairly soon.

I really love weirdos like Prefuse 73, but it's tough to actually rap over beats that elaborate. I remember thinking that his track with Aesop Rock and MF Doom would destroy the world, but then it turned out to be kind of boring.

I think there's something to be said for keeping a beat predictable. One thing I learned from playing drums in bands was how important a fill is - not as a way to show off, but as a signal to the listener (and often the rest of the band) that something new is about to happen.

I agree. I remember, I think it was Hack, a couple years ago, before The Outsider came out, asking why DJ Shadow doesn't collaborate with more big name MCs. Well. Can you imagine Jay-Z trying to rap over "What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 4)"... It's too much. I imagine that Shadow could do standard rap songs pretty easily (see "Halfway Home" by Blackalicious), but would he really have any desire to do so? I think most rappers would rather collab with Just Blaze or Kanye instead of trying to figure out what the fuck to say over a DJ Shadow beat.

And yeah, it's not just Prefuse 73. The instrumental of "Saliva" (Doom and RJD2) is frankly better than the original.

Anybody check out the new Royce, and Muggs vs Planet Asia? After a quick run through, Bar Exam 2 is more of the same sharp rhymes from Royce, but the beat selection is weaker compared to the first mixtape. Pain Language, on the other hand, is awesome in terms of both beats and rhymes. Muggs delivers again, and Asia steps his game up when working with the legend.

Black Milk dropped a free instrumental album recently. I shall return with the download link shortly.

Cadence Weapon's Breaking Kayfabe was a favourite of mine when it came out, but after a few listens to his new one - Afterparty Babies, I sort of dismissed it. Wasn't really doing anything for me. However, by chance I heard Real Estate the other day and thought "cor blimey, this is bloody good!", and as a result I gave the album another listen. I'm really liking it, although it is definitely no BK.

DJ Khaled and Nelly's albums are out (atleast online). Khaled's album isn't as good as his last IMO. Nothing really stands out from it. I kinda like Brass Knuckles though.

DJ Khaled's album is garbage and so is Nelly's. The only decent track on Khaled's album is, "She's Fine" with Sean Paul, Missy Elliott, and Busta Rhymes. Sean Paul's vocals on the hook gets kinda annoying, but it's definetely good enough for top 10 radio play and the clubs.

Nelly's song with T.I. and LL Cool J is disappointing. When you see two names like that featured on a track together you expect alot more. The only other track worth even talking about is "Long Night" with Usher and that's only because of Usher and the great production J. Lac. Nelly flow on the track is atrocious. It doesn't even go with the mood of the track. It's a slow, mellow joint and he's on it yelling through the entire duration. Pretty disappointing, because, otherwise, it would be a great track. "Let It Go Lil' Mama", to me, is the only really solid track on his album. Solid club/radio track, that's it.

Yeah, E-40's flow is horrific, but Akon's vocals and a really well produced instrumental help to save the song. I am a sucker for slow grooving hip-hop/rap tracks when they are done right and that one was done right enough, I think. Not looking forward to E-40's album though.

So I recorded a song. The quality isnt the greatest as I did this in my bedroom, on a 10+ year old mic, at 6:30 in the morning, while being doped up on allergy medication, but its the basic gist of what the song will sound like. I will eventually be re-recording it, but I did this just to get some feedback from people. I talk about the political situation in India in 1984, the tensions between Sikhs and Hindus, and assassination of Indira Gandhi, and the subsequent street riots and hate crimes.

That country song was horrid, but Country Grammar was a brilliant cd, from start to finish. Love it. I don't like anything he did after that, but I'd have to admit that Country Grammar is probably one of my favorite hip hop cds.

E-40 has some pretty good music. You shouldn't have to admit to liking him. There are few people that make beats as good as he does, consistantly. His flow is a little weird, but you get used to it. If you're really a sucker for 'slow grooving hip-hop/rap tracks when they are done right' you would love most of E-40's stuff. He makes great beats. Probably the main reason he's stayed around for so long.

I like "Country Grammar". Still think that's his best song. "Flap Your Wings" is a classic club joint to me and still bangs even today. Also like a couple of other songs off of the Sweat/Suit album. The one with Missy Elliott and Mobb Deep, "Playa" and the one where he samples the NBA on NBC theme, "Heart Of A Champion" is nice. Also like "'N Dey Say".

And how could I forget "Dilemma" with Kelly Rowland. Classic love-sap hip-hop right there with an amazing beat.

Anyone listen to the Mighty Underdogs album? (Gift of Gab from Blackalicious, Lateef, and Headnotic) I'm not familiar with Headnotic, but this album has some pretty good beats. The MF Doom track, "Gunfight", is kind of OK but not great, Doom kind of mailed it in I think. It's a pretty good Quannum-style album though, guest shots from Doom, Damien Marley, Lyrics Born, Casual, Mr. Lif and Akrobatik, DJ Shadow, Chali 2Na and Zion 1... Some of Gab's verses on here are the best I've heard since The Craft, but at the same time it kind of sounds like something only completeists would want to hear.

I went to see Sean Price, Ill Bill, & Rustee Juxx on Tuesday. I posted a link to an article I wrote breaking down the lyrics to Bill's "Society is Brainwashed" on his myspace page, and he actually messaged me back saying he really liked it. He put me on the guestlist to the show, and I got in free with one of my friends. Everyone put on a good show and if you get a chance, I recommend you check them out. I even got to meet Sean P after the show. There were about 15 people hanging outside of the venue about an hour after it was over, and Ruck came out and talked to everyone. Good times.

Ugh. As good as a number of the songs on The Cool were (and "Hip Hop Saved My Life" is one of my favorite rap songs ever), I thought it could have been shortened. And how many times do we say the same thing about double albums? Too much filler, would have been better as a single. Releasing 3 discs at once sounds like an awful idea.

All music genres go through a very similar life cycle: birth, growth, mainstream acceptance, decline, and finally obscurity. With black music, however, the final stage is never reached because white people are work tirelessly to keep it alive. Apparently, once a music has lost its relevance with its intended audience, it becomes MORE relevant to white people.

Historically speaking, the music that white people have kept on life support for the longest period of time is Jazz. Thanks largely to public radio, bookstores, and coffee shops, Jazz has carved out a niche in white culture that is not yet ready to be replaced by Indie Rock. But the biggest role that Jazz plays in white culture is in the white fantasy of leisure. All white people believe that they prefer listening to jazz over watching television. This is not true.

Every few a months, a white person will put on some Jazz and pour themselves a glass of wine or scotch and tell themselves how nice it is. Then they will get bored and watch television or write emails to other white people about how nice it was to listen to Jazz at home. “Last night, I poured myself a glass of Shiraz and put Charlie Parker on the Bose. It was so relaxing, I wish I had a fireplace.” Listing this activity as one of your favorites is a sure fire way to make progress towards a romantic relationship with a white person.

Along with Jazz, white people have also taken quite a shine to The Blues, an art form that captured the pain of the black experience in America. Then, in the 1960s, a bunch of British bands started to play their own version of the music and white people have been loving it ever since. It makes sense considering that the British were the ones who created The Blues in the 17th Century.

Today, white people keep The Blues going strong by taking vacations to Memphis, forming awkward bands, making documentaries, and organizing folk festivals. Blue and Jazz music appeal mostly to older white people and select few young ones who probably wear fedoras. But that doesn’t mean that young white people aren’t working hard to preserve music that has lost relevance. No, there are literally thousands of white people who are giving their all to keep old school Hip Hop alive.

Even as you read this, white people are telling other white people about the golden age of Hip Hop that they experienced in a suburban high school or through a viewing of The Wackness.

If you are good at concealing laughter and contempt, you should ask a white person about “Real Hip Hop.” They will quickly tell you about how they don’t listen to “Commercial Hip Hop” (aka music that black people actually enjoy), and that they much prefer “Classic Hip Hop.”

“I don’t listen to that commercial stuff. I’m more into the Real Hip Hop, you know? KRS One, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, De La Soul, Wu Tang, you know, The Old School.”

Calling this style of music ‘old school’ is considered an especially apt name since the majority of people who listen to it did so while attending old schools such as Dartmouth, Bard, and Williams College.

What it all comes down to is that white people are convinced that if they were alive when this music was relevant that they would have been into it. They would have been Alan Lomax or Rick Rubin. Now the best they can hope for is to impress an older black person with their knowledge.

I thought the Nas album was a let down. None of the songs are bad, and there are some brilliant ones on there, but as a whole, the album doesnt have much replay value. I love 808s. Kanye is actually more suited as a pop-hip-hop producer than an honest to goodness rap/hip-hop producer, I think. None of the songs will immediately grab you, but man, after a few listens, that album is a grower. I like some of his work with Common (though the best track on the last album was done by Dilla) and he's definitely a good producer, but he shines more when doing the radio friendly stuff.

Good looking out on the Q-Tip and Rhymefest albums too.

Glad you came around Ringo. It really is a solid album. After listening to 808s, I'll be doing other stuff and I'll have 5 or 6 different songs from it stuck in my head at once. Everything but "Coldest Winter" has something super catchy about it. I think "Amazing" and "Paranoid" are my favorites. And I really dig the Wayne track, even though every review I've read specifically pointed out that it sucks. Bitches are crazy.

I think we really do have to start considering Kanye one of the absolute best producers of all time. 4 great albums (I would call Late Registration his worst, and that is still PRETTY DAMN GOOD) and dozens and dozens of tracks for other people ... not bad for a guy who nobody had really heard of until Jay-Z's Blueprint came out on 9/11.

Basically what I'm saying is that In a post-Kanye/Just Blaze/Dilla, etc. world, producers can do anything they can do anywhere else in a hip-hop song, and Nas' albums don't reflect that.

Jay-Z has always had the sense to be experimental sonically. That's why the Blueprint worked so well. Now, I would take Stillmatic over The Blueprint (most would disagree) but the same problem still irks Nas. With the exception of Hero, and Sly Fox, and (by definition) Black President, most of the songs on Untitled would not appear out of place on a Nas album from 2001-2002. Hip-Hop Is Dead was much better in that regard, though lyrically it doesn't touch Untitled.

and as far as Nas not 'riding the wave' of the zeitgeist goes, I'm not saying Nas needs to sing with autotune or anything, just that production-wise, it might help to beef his beats up a bit, experiment a bit, and branch out, because the best songs on Untitled are the ones that do that.

I don't really know if I can rate Untitled above 808s And Heartbreak, A Kid Named Cudi, or even The Mixtape About Nothing. I mean, I'm a total Nas stan, but I'd basically sum up Untitled by saying that it hits the mark lyrically and conceptually (I still like that such a heavy topic doesn't become tedious), but misses the mark on the more superficial stuff, which matters in hip-hop. Naw mean?

Also, I would have to say It Was Written > Stillmatic. Nothing against the latter, which is great, but "I Gave You Power" and "If I Ruled the World" are my two favorite Nas songs ever, and furthermore two of my favorite rap songs. It really doesn't get better than that.

You know what's awesome? Bun-B's II Trill. I've only just got around to listening to it properly and it's fucking great. I've always been a bit prejudiced towards Southern Hip-Hop, because there is so much shit to wade through, but UGK were masters, and this album, after Pimp C's death, just has a whole different dimension to it. It's actually a bit emotional... :(

I'm still not quite decided on this Kanye album, but it's definitely growing on me. Some of the songs are way too repetitive and can drag on forever. It's a bit short at only 12 songs, the last of which is the live track that I don't really care for. The lyrics are very simple and at some points ridiculous, but also very catchy. I've had a few songs (most notably Love Lockdown and Robocop) stuck in my head for days.

I definitely like it, but don't think I'll ever come to love it because there's really not a whole lot of substance.

I am less into lyrically deep stuff nowadays and more interested in club bangers...for example the tracks I've listened to a lot recently are mainly DJ Khaled remixes with Kanye, Jay-Z, Ludacris etc appearing on them. Khaled's hard-hitting beats are right up my alley.

So can anyone recommend me some good tracks along those lines? Or if something doesn't fall under that category but is still legitimately awesome then recommend it anyway.
