Thanks for listening! I appreciate the feedback. I go by Noyz. Based on that appearance, I've got a potential spot on an upcoming mixtape. I should be meeting with the guy who's putting it all together some time later this month. I'll keep you guys posted.

I cant wait for the new Roots album. Black Thought has always been dope, but he's been one of the best MC's around since Things Fall Apart. The track with Styles P and Mos Def is sometihng serious.

Hey guys. How's it going?

Remember when people used this thread and talked about hip-hop? That was always pretty cool.

Anyway, here are some random thoughts about hip-hop ... because this thread needs some love.

1. There's something really refreshing about "Yesterday" from Dilla's Jay Loves Japan record. I love how fucking dirty that samples is ... do you think he ever looked for a better version of that record? Maybe he just didn't care? I say its refreshing because I spend the majority of my free time right now producing hip-hop, and I spend way too much time worrying about how my speakers sound and keeping my LPs in good condition and not enough time just letting it fucking be. I love that man. Seriously, there's something unexplainable about the impact he has had on my music.

2. I've thought about it for hours and hours, and I think I finally have my decision: The greatest group in hip-hop history is De La Soul. I had it down to De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, OutKast and Public Enemy ... and, yes, De La Soul gets the nods. The only thing you can really hold against those guys is that they didn't have one consistent producer making their music through their whole careers ... but, if anything, I think it says a lot that the post-Prince Paul albums are so incredible.

3. I've been listening to that Lootpack record a lot lately ... god damn Madlib is great.

TRO
April 22nd, 2008, 2:07 AM
The lo-fi sound of Dilla's samples is definitely intentional. They've got that series of interviews on youtube where J-Rocc recalls Dilla being completely dumbfounded about a rapper who put out an album on cassette in like 2004. "Man, they got it on fucking cassette..." That's why you can now find Ruff Draft on cassette.

Personally I like the hisses and pops on old vinyl, they add a timeless quality to the sound that cannot be artificially reproduced. I've listened to Nashville Skyline on CD, it just doesn't sound as good as my beat up old LP. I don't take good care of my vinyl at all, I mean I'm not actively trying to get them dusty or anything, I just don't make a big deal about protecting them. Mind you, none of the ones I own are worth more than $25.

So now, when we're talking about "groups", does the Wu-Tang Clan qualify? Cause if so, they would be #1, if not, any of the groups you mentioned are deserving.

Buckshot and 9th Wonder leaked yesterday. Overall, I'd say its better than the 'Chemistry', 9th's production starts to drag towards the end. Much like 'The Dream Merchant', if you listen to every track individually, they all sound good, but some of the beats start blending together when you listen to the entire album straight through.

Yes, I'd say Wu-Tang qualifies. Enter the Wu-Tang is one of my favorite rap records of all time, and I went through that phase just like everyone else where I bought all the solo albums, but I just can't put those guys ahead of De La Soul, Tribe, Outkast or Public Enemy. I can't do it ...

The Roots stay dope with every record because they're one of the best hip-hop bands ever.

Man, that's crazy. I understand if you just say we're only talking about the Wu-Tang group albums and comparing them to De La or Outkast or the Roots, no contest. But when you start talking about the solo albums too, Wu-Tang is invincible. By my count, De La Soul has three really good records (the kind that I have to listen to over and over again): 3 Feet High, De La Soul Is Dead, and Stakes is High. Wu-Tang has the 36 Chambers, Forever, Only Built for Cuban Linx, Liquid Swords (which is probably the best out of all of them), Ironman, Fishscale, The Dirty Version, Blackout! (which I really like as a pop album), not to mention the many others that aren't quite as good, Heavy Mental, More Fish, Big Doe Rehab, The Swarm, The W...

It's really not a fair comparison, because De La only had 3 MCs, Outkast only has 2, Wu-Tang was a fucking army of guys who all had something to say. But depending on how you define group, Wu-Tang was the best group. Not the best duo, not the best three, just the best group. They released so much more material than De La, that there's more to like.

Also, in my opinion, Stakes is High is the third best De La Soul album, but these are the kinds of opinions you could go back and forth with for weeks easily.

If I'm really trying to rate the Wu-Tang Clan as a group and see if I consider them a better group than De La Soul or Public Enemy or whoever, I can't give them extra points because of those absolutely brilliant solo albums RZA produced in the years between Enter the Wu-Tang and Wu-Tang Forever. Does it make RZA one of the best producers of the 90s? Of course it does, but it doesn't mean that it makes the Wu-Tang Clan a better group ...

Look, this is kind of a silly thing we are debating here, I hear where you are coming from 100%. I'm just explaining why, in my mind, the Wu-Tang Clan are one of the top ten groups in hip-hop history, but probably not one of the top five ...

OutKast's discography is a thing of beauty, man.

1994: Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik
1996: ATLiens
1998: Aquemini
2000: Stankonia
2003: Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (not sure if I can count this one if I'm not counting the early Wu-Tang solo albums ... but still, this is their worst anyway)
2006: Idlewild

What beasts.

Fro
April 26th, 2008, 3:06 PM
I would say that ATLiens matches 36 Chambers in that they're both hip hop classics and in my top 5 rap albums of all time.

I would probably include Wu's early solo albums in the group discussion for the same reasons TRO listed. Hell, Liquid Swords features all 9 members, with Wu guest spots on almost every track. Of course the same can't be said for all of them, especially Tical. But even in those cases, RZA's production is enough for me to consider them group efforts, because he was the integral member and provided the distinctive sound that made those early solo joints so good. But enough of this semantical argument about what constitutes a group album...

No love for Gang Starr? Wu, Gang Starr and Tribe would probably make up my top 3.

Ringo
April 26th, 2008, 3:21 PM
True. Outkast's first four were all rather fabulous, but for me 36 Chambers is just in a different league. It's certainly a lot closer if you take out the Wu-Tang solos.

And aye, Gang Starr should definitely be up for consideration.

Game Theory is a tough album to follow, it being the nearly unanimous choice for album of the year 2006 in this thread. I think this one will grow on you, but agree that it's not quite as good as their previous two. I include The Tipping Point because other than being a little short, I thought it was pretty much flawless. It wasn't nearly as well received as it deserved imo.

It's a solid record, for sure. "Rising Down" and "Get Busy" open the album by kicking your ass and then kicking it again. "Criminal," "I Will Not Apologize," "The Show" and "Rising Up" are all great. I love the shift to using so many more dirty synths.

After having the album in my discman (yes, discman) today on the bus for a few hours, its nowhere near as bad as I first thought. I was just let down that there was nothing else of similar quality as 75 Bars, Get Busy, Rising Down, and Rising Up. It does have its share of bangers, like Criminal, Singing Man, I Cant Help It, Lost Desire, and The Show. I'm not sure why the two Unwritten songs are so short, as they both cut off just as you start to get into them. @15 is awesome for what it is, but doesnt have a lot of replay value. The beat for I Will Not Apologize just sounds lazy, and that same sample was used to much better effect on Poet Laureate 2.

With Dice Raw listed 5 times on the back, I wasn't expecting him to be singning for 3 of those spots. Malik B could have been featured on another track or two in place of Porn. These are just minor complaints, and overall there isn't much to complain about. I would rate this in the 8-8.5 range.

I'm saying the best rap songs ever but also your favorites because there's bound to be some overlap there. Could you cut it all down to 20 tracks?

I was trying to think about this because a friend who has heard some hip-hop but wants to know "the classics" asked me to make her a mix tape, but I'm not sure if it's worth including the Sugarhill Gang and NWA and so forth or just the best pop rap. Here's what I'm doing for her:

01. Method and Red - Blackout
02. Erick Sermon - Music
03. Warren G. feat Nate Dogg - Regulators
04. Dre and 2Pac - California Love
05. Camp Lo - Luchini
06. The Roots - The Seed 2.0
07. Jurassic 5 - What's Golden
08. The Pharcyde - Runnin'
09. Nas - If I Ruled the World
10. OutKast - ATLiens
11. Tribe Called Quest - Award Tour
12. Notorious BIG - Juicy
13. GZA - Liquid Swords
14. Black Star - Astronomy (8th Light)
15. Dead Prez - Hell Yeah
16. Madvillain - All Caps
17. Raekwon feat Ghost - Heaven & Hell
18. J Dilla - Won't Do

This is basically the list of songs I can listen to over and over again for years, these are my classics. Any suggestions, or what would your list look like?

I was trying to think about this because a friend who has heard some hip-hop but wants to know "the classics" asked me to make her a mix tape, but I'm not sure if it's worth including the Sugarhill Gang and NWA and so forth or just the best pop rap. Here's what I'm doing for her:

01. Method and Red - Blackout
02. Erick Sermon - Music
03. Warren G. feat Nate Dogg - Regulators
04. Dre and 2Pac - California Love
05. Camp Lo - Luchini
06. The Roots - The Seed 2.0
07. Jurassic 5 - What's Golden
08. The Pharcyde - Runnin'
09. Nas - If I Ruled the World
10. OutKast - ATLiens
11. Tribe Called Quest - Award Tour
12. Notorious BIG - Juicy
13. GZA - Liquid Swords
14. Black Star - Astronomy (8th Light)
15. Dead Prez - Hell Yeah
16. Madvillain - All Caps
17. Raekwon feat Ghost - Heaven & Hell
18. J Dilla - Won't Do

This is basically the list of songs I can listen to over and over again for years, these are my classics. Any suggestions, or what would your list look like?

BTW I know "Blackout" is a silly dumb song, but god damn it's brilliant, "we got all channels, lift my shirt all mammal, you ship off keys we ship off grand pianos". The only thing I'm missing is some Afroman.

No Doom? I would've expected at least one song from you of all people.

Madvillain silly Morrison, he included Madvillain.

By the way, there's no way I could come up with a list like this off the top of my head, but there are three or four songs I know I would be selecting ... "Ms. Fat Booty" from Mos Def is one, "Starz" by Jaylib is one, "Player's Ball" from OutKast is one ... "Doomsday" by Doom might be number one.

I'll make a list this weekend dammit.

A nice turntable, a sampler and records are all you need.

The easier way to just jump in is getting a midi controller (a keyboard where the keys don't actually make any sound, but they send signals) and plugging it into your computer. You can usually get a midi controller that comes packaged with some decent programs that will get you started.

I started out by getting a midi controller, and I liked it, but it just wasn't clicking. Then I bought an Akai MPC1000 sampler after saving up some cash and getting a raise ... and I haven't really touched the midi controller since.

You can record entire tracks with just a sampler and some records.

Take a look here. http://www.tweakheadz.com/

It will lead you to much better info I'm giving you, plus there are links to a store, so you'll be able to see how much shit costs.

Or you could just use mp3s and a hacked version of Cool Edit Pro like I do, or is that cheating? The downside is that mp3s are relatively poor quality, you can't find mp3s of obscure soul records, and I'm mostly interested in making mashups which is a different game altogether. But I think if you don't care too much about the quality of sound, you can do stuff digitally too.

We define words, words don't define us. If you want "Nigger" to be a racist epithet, OK, that's what it's going to be. If you want it to mean something positive like "friend", "comrade", "homey", and you use it in a context that isn't negative, the meaning of the word will change. Well for whatever reason, the title was attracting mainstream attention, and I think it's possible Nas took a step back, looked at how the media's talking about race nowadays (especially with the man in my avatar and the Jeremiah Wright scandal) and thought that his point, as it was, wouldn't be understood or would be taken completely out of context, and he's probably right.

My boy Nick with a fantastic blog post on how Nas is Brett Farve'in:

Mr. Nassir Jones is at again, and I’m fucking tired of his crap. He is once again, baiting the public with a controversial album title, much like 2006’s Hip Hop Is Dead. The difference is that this time, his album’s title carried with it a valid and intriguing message, unlike Hip Hop Is Dead, which is a straight up unfounded assertion. Hip-hop is not dead, and neither is the conception of Nigger in America.

When the announcement came that his new album would be titled “NIGGER”, that’s right, hard ER, I thought, this is a solid idea, forcing people to truly confront, arguably the most important and significant word in our American cultural lexicon. This could really create a constructive discourse regarding race in America. Nas would not only force confrontation, but appeared to be arguing that despite a lot of hard fought change, African Americans, are in many respects still viewed, treated as, and even possess a self-conception of “NIGGER”. Initially, it appeared that Nas was not going to back down, Def Jam got behind him, and as the weeks passed, the album’s title remained constant. But Nas ended up being quite the cock tease, finally backing down, and changing the album’s title to the simply self-titled Nas. I’ve fucked with Nas for a while now (Since “Hate Me Now“, I‘m not gonna act like I was heavy in the streets with Illmatic when I was 11 years old), and it’s easy for me to say “shame on you Nas”, for not following through, with what I believe is a great idea. Conversely, I am just getting tired of Nas’ bullshit. He wields so much power, has one of the largest platforms to shout from, and seems to “get it”, but can’t seem to pull off the execution, and really perform some sort of generative work. His influence and position as elder statesmen of hip-hop is going to waste.

Now, one could argue that Nas accomplished his goal by generating public discussion and discourse regarding the title “Nigger”, which is somewhat valid. Despite this, not completely following through was quite the bitch move, you’ve gotta close it out, bro. Nas isn’t starving in the streets, he can live without the sales in Wal Mart and Target, and fuck what Jesse Jackson thinks.

In, what appears to be a consolatory move on Nassir’s part, he is planning to release the Nigger Mixtape with DJ Green Lantern.

This is simply too little, too late. Additionally, this mixtape is only going to get into the hands of internet nerds and hardcore heads, like myself. Nas will essentially by preaching to the quire with this one. Your average Nah Right reader gets it, a kid that actually still buys CDs at Wal Mart, probably does not.

With all the hype and anticipation surrounding this album, I am a little worried for Nas. I doubt this is going to be the 5 mic classic Nas is purporting it to be. Nas is in a difficult position, if this album is less than great it will be considered a flop by myself and many of my fellow hip-hop heads. How much longer will Illmatic, an album that dropped when I was 9 years old, afford Nas this legacy status in hip-hop in which he can do no wrong? Andre 3000 recently rapped about how “they got me out here Brett Favrein’”, but I think Nas is starting to look more like hip-hop’s Brett Favre, holding the true heads hostage with bullshit.

Let’s hope the album formally called Nigger is a gem, for hip-hop, and Nas’ sake.

My boy Nick with a fantastic blog post on how Nas is Brett Farve'in:

Man, I know I'm a bit of a Nas mark, (<-----) but I think your boy's a little off.

1. The theme is still the same. "N.I.G.G.E.R." and "Be A Nigger Too", as well as "I'm Black" and others are still (as far as I know) confirmed for the album. It's not gonna be "another Nas album" no matter what the title is.

2. Just to ask, but is he black? Because, to be honest, it's kind of bullshit for a white person to say "this black dude really should've named this album nigger because it would entertain me." (note: I thought it was a good idea. I'd love to see it, but I won't condemn the man because I'm white, and thus not in a position to do so.)

3. Hip Hop Is Dead was quality. Especially for a dude on his eighth LP. I mean, he could phone it in and get away with it, but he's not. Regardless of whether or not his approach is a bait and switch, he's generating more interest in albums that are interesting to begin with.

4. I think he was serious about releasing the album as Nigger. He really was. The tracklist suggests a concept album similar to Hip Hop is Dead, and he's talked about it for practically two years, he talked in depth about the doubts and potential for misunderstanding, and he was generally very aware of what releasing the album would mean.

5. As I said, this isn't the politics thread, but look at Barack Obama. He had a black pastor saying things that black pastors say for legitimate reasons that were taken completely out of context and given a new, false context for no other reason than to suit peoples' prejudices. Why would this album be any different? Especially now that, possibly for the first time since the Civil Rights movement, race is a real, hot-button issue in America, it seems like Nigger would be an interesting artifact. But what context would it be taken in? If I had to guess, I'd say not the one Nas wants it taken in.

He has good reason to not want to release the album with that title right now. It's not a matter of him being a "pussy" or anything like that. I'm sure it'll be quality, the first two leaks are quality, and anything beyond that is reading a little too much into it.

Like I said, I just want it to come out already.

Adamy
May 29th, 2008, 8:05 PM
1. I don't really think so. I can only speak for myself, but I feel the album will forever be tainted by the controversy regarding the title. It's not just another album, but it now becomes a issue of potential and what could have been - not unlike Nas' own career.

2. He's white, but I did not get that sense at all from reading it. At no point does he even use the word "entertain". Nas is in a unique position - he's an intelligent rapper with a huge legacy and enough mainstream popularity to really make this a relevant statement - but chose not to capitalize on his stature. I don't see how his actions are even remotely defensible from an artistic or intellectual standpoint, and that's why it's disappointing.

3. I didn't think it was bad, but definitely not good enough to back up a title like that.

4. The point is more that now all that talk means nothing, because he didn't follow through on it.

5. Again, Nas had the chance to to take an increasingly vapid, soulless medium and use it to make an impactful artistic statement. Except then he didn't, and now all his talk about calling the album "Nigger" comes off like a ratings grab. He had the balls to call an album "Hip Hop Is Dead", but apparently not the balls to resuscitate it.

It's frustrating, is all.

You act like him calling the album Hip-Hop is Dead was something that he had to "back up" by releasing some five-star classic ... he was just a veteran of the game making a basic point.

And Hip-Hop is Dead is was pretty fucking good. "Who Killed It?" and "Black Republicans" are classics and the album is one of his best.

But I mean, I kind of see where your dude is coming from. Kind of. But I think he's kind of freaking out a bit much. It's a little silly.

People do realize that the title "Hip Hop Is Dead" is ironic, right? And that whole album is great, like that track that samples "Unforgettable", even my mom likes that song. Personally I don't care if Nas pushes buttons or not, he's still the best rapper ever.

I think people should use the word "nigger" more often, it seems like the more you use it, the less harsh and insulting it becomes, but that's just my theory. What would really happen if he released it with that name? Fox News would get more ammunition, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would have a reason to exist for another news cycle, so who really benefits from that kind of publicity? Would it have been good for hip-hop? Would it have made people think about the music that they listen to, the records that they buy, the mediocre gangster-pop that passes as "urban (nigger) music" these days, or would it have provoked a predictable kneejerk reaction? I think it's arguable. If Nas wants to release an album title like that, that's bound to stir up some emotion, he could wait until after Obama gets elected instead of reminding all the whites that they hate niggers. Cause that's the last thing we need right now.

That was pretty much what I was getting at. If you look back right now at how the American media is handling the issue of race right now, they're handling it very irresponsibly. They don't even have the sensitivity or awareness to abstain from panel discussions on whether or not Obama could be assassinated. I don't necessarily blame Nas for doubting whether or it it would've been received the way he wanted it to, because it probably wouldn't have.

Hip Hop Is Dead provoked a good debate in hip-hop at a time when hip-hop needed it, but as a whole I always got the feeling that the message wasn't really received all that well. I mean, did you see him on the red carpet at the Grammys? The blonde, white reporter from CNN reporter told him, "well, hip hop isn't dead in my eyes!" Race, especially right now, and especially with the approach Nas is taking on the album, is a "handle with care" issue that can't really afford to be taken out of context. I was looking forward to it, the two songs are both very good, and everything he's saying about the album sounds promising.

If it's a quality issue, it's a quality issue, and an album title isn't gonna change that. I'm more anxious to see how Nas addresses the whole "filler" issue that has plagued his last couple of albums.

I agree about the irresponsible racism coming from the media. Like did you watch the NBA draft lottery on ESPN? Jay-Z was there as a representative of the Nets, and this stupid reporter who interviewed him was all like "Well, he once wrote a song about having 99 problems. But if the Nets win tonight's draft lottery, he'll only have 98 problems giggle giggle." The expression on Jay's face was just awful. The guy's there as a minority owner of an NBA team, and ESPN wants to disrespect his music that they didn't even listen to. Great.

I do remember after Hip Hop Is Dead came out, I was at a local hip-hop show and the MCs were like "Yo they said hip hop was deeeaaaddd" and the crowd booed. And I was thinking, what, really? Did they really not understand that it's an ironic album, the whole point is that hip hop is alive and well and still has unexplored potential?

As for Nas's filler, I think Street's Disciple could have been cut down to one album, but Hip Hop Is Dead was solid through and through. I mean Hack just mentioned two songs that he calls classic, and I wouldn't even agree with that label, that's how deep the album is.

I am strangely disappointed in Carter 3. He doesn't sound like he's having as much fun as he did on past releases, and it shows up in his voice and his wordplay. I think the past couple years have turned him into a singles-oriented artist, and dropping a mixtape a week probably didn't help either. He's getting pretty bad about re-using material: "We are not the same I am a martian", "Tastes so good make you wanna like the wrapper/So I let her like the rapper", etc.

I've never entirely understood the beef he had with Mannie Fresh, but "Got Money" is the best beat Fresh never made.

"Mr. Carter" and "Let The Beat Build" are clearly the standouts. Wayne is fun to listen to, but he just doesn't have much to say when you take a good listen. I was really expecting him to bring something new to the table with the hype for this album, but meh. Maybe he'll change it up since this one leaked. "Lollipop" has grown on me as a silly club single. I've hated it for about three months, but for some reason it's tolerable now. Still very average, like most of the LP.

Okay, so does anyone else think that, maybe, Lil Wayne is consciously trying to be the biggest ironic parody of rap possible? Like, seriously. He becomes a million times more enjoyable when you think about it that way. I remember first thinking it during one of his videos where he was doing the most stereotypical rap shit in such a blatant way that it was hard to believe he wasn't in on the joke. Plus towards the end of the video for "Fireman" the DRAMATIC CLOSE UPS of the the fire truck were hilarious(was well as THUMBS BRUISE appearing on the screen). And now in Lollipop he is playing a guitar on top of a stretch hummer limousine. Brilliant.

Yeah, those were definitely the two that jumped out at me, although "Mrs. Officer" is vintage Wayne (and Wyclef on the beat, apparently). "She be like 'fuck the police'"; "I asked for her number/ she said, '9-1-1'".

Wordplay is what he's best at, and it's definitely lacking on this one. With Carter 2, there was at least one outrageously clever line in every song.

I still don't understand how Lil Wayne is considered a good rapper in any way shape or form. Unless it's the same way that people enjoy Ludacris and Mims and Lil John, where it's so over the top lame that it's actually sort of cool? I dunno, Wayne has never done anything for me. I guess if you're going to listen to pop-rap, he's better than 50 Cent, but that's not a very high bar.

Agreed. Though Luda is better than all the guys you mentioned. I got into a serious argument a few months ago when someone asked me who the best rapper alive is right now. I said Black Thought, and this other dude flipped! What's weird is that nobody was saying Wayne was the best until he himself said it. I'll admit he has improved majorly since the Chopper City/400 Degreez/Block is Hot Cash Money days, but there are just so many rappers that shit on him in every imaginable category for him to be the best.

Funny ass montage created by DJ Doo Wop in response to Weezy's "fuck mixtape DJ's" comments that you'll hear in the video. Wayne has since clarified he was speaking on DJ's who use his material without permission, especially The Empire, whom he said he wishes he "died two times tomorrow" I always thought The Empire shit was legit, they got EVERYTHING first. Someone in his camp has to be affiliated with him/them.

Anyway, the album seems like it will have little replay value. Even some of my favorite songs are growing tired. The production is mostly off the charts, but this album just doesn't match up to the hype surrounding it at all. Here's a track by track review, SAT-style, just cause I'm bored...

1. 3 Peat - 2.5/5 - Pretty hard track. Nothing new from Wayne at all, the lyrics sound just like something from his previous albums, but this works as an anthem type intro.

2. A Milli - 2/5 - I just hate the sample on this song, it's probably the worst beat on the whole album in my opinion. Wayne is okay on it, but two tracks in, this isn't feeling like something hyped as the biggest album of the year.

3. Mr. Carter feat. Jay-Z - 4.5/5 - Here we go. This track is serious. Just Blaze kills the beat, Jay-Z kills his guest spot, and Wayne comes off fairly decent. Lines like "Flyer than Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice" just show why he's extremely average. Still, this track shows with the right production and a hot (and I mean hot) guest spot, Wayne can make a quality song. His "next time you mention Pac, Biggie, or Jay-Z, don't forget Weezy Baby" line at the end of the song is laughable, though..

4. Got Money feat. T-Pain - 1/5 - Nothing special here at all. According to the album sticker, it's the 2nd single, but "Lollipop" trumps this in my opinion. I just think T-Pain is played as hell, and the beat is pretty horrible.

5. Comfortable feat. Babyface - 2.5/5 - Song's old as hell, but I don't think it's ever been released in high quality. Kanye's production sounds like something straight from Be or Late Registration, and pretty much saves the song. I guess a Babyface hook is better than T-Pain, but it's not anything memorable. John Legend or Alicia Keys would've been better to me :dunno:

6. Phone Home - 1.5/5 - Just goofy shit over a potentially decent David Banner beat. The repeated chorus is annoying as shit, and Wayne's drugged out flow is yet again, nothing we haven't heard a dozen times before. Problem is, he's done it better himself, with songs like "I Feel Like Dying".

7. Dr. Carter - 3/5 - Surprisingly Swizz Beatz comes through with a hot ass beat, although he's just sampling truly classic hip-hop for the main break. Simple concept on this song, but it works, and Wayne's flow sounds nicer than the majority of the album so far.

8. Tie My Hands feat. Robin Thicke - 4/5 - I'm usually not much of a Robin Thicke fan, but everything seems to mesh well together on this song. Kanye's super-soulful production, Thicke's smooth chorus, Wayne's emotional, sincere lyrics. This is one of the very best songs on here.

9. Shoot Me Down - 3.5/5 - Another great Kanye beat. When I listen to these songs, I can't help but think someone else could've done better work with these tracks. Still, Wayne is tolerable, and it's worth listening to for sure.

10. Playin With Fire - 2.5/5 - Average Lil Wayne shit to me. Decent beat, but nothing amazing. Lacks the energy of previous Wayne tracks with similar vibes like "Gossip". The recycled mixtape verse doesn't help much either, especially when your material is everywhere and this is your most anticipated work yet.

11. Lollipop - 2/5 - Good, catchy single. That's about it.

12. La La - 2/5 - Don't really like Banner's production here. None of the rappers get my attention. Blah. Busta has the best verse.

13. Nothin On Me feat Juelz and Fabolous - 3/5 - Doope Alchemist beat featuring three of my least favorite over-hyped rappers. And it's surprisingly decent.

14. Let The Beat Build - 4/5 - Kanye comes through on the beat yet again. At first I couldn't get into Wayne's spitting at all, but I dig this song. One of the albums few gems.

15. Mrs. Officer feat. Bobby Valentino - 1.5/5 - I don't mind Bobby Valentino, but the chorus with the police siren sounds is just bad. The beat sounds like something from Wayne's previous albums, doesn't do much for me..

16. Misunderstood - 2.5/5 - Common used the sample much better, but this is decent. The spoken part just makes me hate Lil Wayne more, though..

Overall - 2.5 - Average. Download this shit. It's not worth the hype at all. When the production outshines the so-called "best rapper alive", something is wrong. I can't believe I just wasted that much time typing about Lil Wayne, fuck..

Wordplay and the fact hat he sounds like he's having so much fun on the mic. Wayne's specialty is when he takes a figurative expression and flips it into something literal, like "You can't see me? Baby Boy, you got that cataracts" or "Dear Mr. Toilet, I'm the shit/Got these other haters pissed 'cuz my toilet paper thick".

He sucks at storytelling, but my personal feeling is that I'll read a book if I want storytelling.

Do yourself a favor and download this, you'll probably be thanking me later. It's the new mixtape from Wale, A Mixtape About Nothing. The concept of the mixtape is pretty much built around Seinfeld, which is simple yet unique and refreshing. Wale isn't really the greatest lyricist around, but he's better than most, and I really like his style and presence. He's got a star-making producer backing him (Mark Ronson), well-respected and established vets like The Roots supporting him, and has built a pretty huge buzz for himself by simple self-promotion and releasing his mixtapes for free online. If that isn't enough to convince you, well then, don't bother.. you're missing out.

Easily more enjoyable than The Carter 3 in my opinion. The strong tracks on C3 really stand out and a couple are true gems, but if I was Wayne I'd be ashamed for not capitalizing on the anticipation for this record and making it a true classic. I can't think of a single album in the last 5+ years with this much hype, except for maybe Detox. Die-hards like us fiend for Cuban Linx 2, but Wayne had damn near every hip-hop fan in the world anxious to hear what he came with. I'm sure it will sell crazy regardless, but he blew a huge chance to prove himself as something truly special. He has no business mentioning himself in the same sentence as Pac, B.I.G., and Jay, which is even more ridiculous than his "best rapper alive" tag. Is this album even better than the previous Carter albums or the Dedication mixtape series? Minus 2-3 bangers, there's nothing here that stands out from the majority of his material. When he first performed "Gossip" live, I was optimistic about the album. Unfortunately, the intensity and emotion heard on that track is nowhere to be found.

At this point I'm rambling, but you get it. Simply put, Wale's free mixtape > Weezy's ultra-hyped album. Decide for yourself, though..

Off topic from the rest of my post, but might as well mention it while I'm in here. I hadn't purchased an album in a long time, since Little Brother's Getback I believe. Missed out on some quality 2007 stuff, but I'll grab them eventually. Anyway, I finally got around to buying some new shit last week, all great pick-ups. 9th Wonder & Buckshot's The Formula, Atmosphere's When Live Gives You Lemons.. Deluxe Edition (maybe my favorite album ever from them, the only one I own), and of course The Roots Rising Down. Support that good shit! Hip-hop is slowly moving in a new direction it seems; when Atmosphere can debut in the Top 10 and a Kidz In the Hall video shows up on TRL, I can't help but think a lot of rap fans are growing tired of the same old, stale shit. Let's keep it moving in the right direction.

Ennh, I understand what you mean, but it just doesn't interest me much. I'll listen to it for a change of pace, but I don't think I've ever heard a Lil Wayne song that I have to listen to over and over again for years like say MF Doom or Blackalicious or GZA.

But since I brought up Mims, I have to say I love that one line, "I'm hot cause I'm fly. You ain't cause you not. This is why this is why this why I'm hot." If I was a philosophy professor I would be sadistically making my students parse those lyrics.

The last albums I remember buying were Rising Down, and 8 Diagrams. What sucks is that a lot of underground labels have crappy distribution. I haven't seen the new Blue Sky Black Death in stores yet, and since last August, I've only seen one copy of The Offering in stores and it was $25, which is too much to pay for just one album. Personally I could listen to the beat on "Celebrate [Finale]" all day long, but the rhymes do not impress me. Too many of those Lifesavas beats had the same tempo, it really bugged me. I mean hey, great idea for an album, the Flaming Lips kind of did that a while ago, but kudos if you can pull it off. They did not pull it off. And bear in mind I'm saying this about my favorite local rap legends, I've smoked with these guys and been out on the dance floor with them, their first album, Spirit in Stone is one of the best rap debuts ever, but they just did not bring it with this one. It's listenable, but I was expecting greatness. Between their first album and this one, they released two new tracks, one remix of an old song which was awesome, and an Elliott Smith cover, of all things, which was bizarre and excellent. So yeah, they created high expectations and did not rise to that level, I think. Hopefully they continue to create good music in the future, but for THE premier hip-hop act in Portland, OR, they are treading water while Ohmega Watts and Braille and Animal Farm and Sandpeople are just getting better.

Also my favorite Pigeon John track is that one towards the end of the Summertime Pool Party or whatever, with J-Live and RJD2 does the best. That song is an awesome beat, great hook, clever intimate rhymes, all that you could ask for from a backpack rap song.

They're more a novelty act than anything else. They get hype because they're mad young and hard-rep the late 80s/early 90s. I remember about six months ago when I first saw the video for "Black Mags" on nahright and I was like, "This is pretty awesome." I guess The Bake Sale gets repetitive (and not in a hilarious Mike Jones way), but I think if they're still around in five years they could be awesome.

Behind the Stained Glass is a solid album, but its similar to More Fish in that you know a lot of these songs are just leftovers from the previous one. The first half of the album plays well, besides The Whole World, and features some of Priest's best work ever in For Tomorrow and Profits of Man. Vintage is also a hell of a track. The second half sounds too much alike mainly due to DJ Whool's production. Listening to a lot of the songs individually is no problem, but as a whole, the second half doesnt come off too well. I'd give it about 7.5/10.

Some stuff to look forward to...

I'd love it if "Black President" made the actual album ... there isn't any chance of that, is there?

Looks like I'm reviewing the RZA show here in Dallas for the paper ... first show review I've done since graduating a few years ago, hopefully all goes well. He should play some stuff from 8 Diagrams ... that album has aged pretty well so far, I can't believe the rest of the group shit on it so much.

I agree. I cant remember the last time I played Big Doe Rehab, but I was just listening to 8D this past weekend and it still sounds fresh. I've been on a major RZA kick lately, with In Stereo and Digital Bullet getting a lot of play. NYC Everything, Mantis, Lab Drunk, Show U Love, Be A Man, and Sickness are the shit right now.

Got my very first tattoo today.. I'd been thinking about this for about 2 and a half years, and I finally pulled the trigger. You probably won't know what it is unless you're a fan of Def Jux/Weathermen, Cage, Aesop Rock, Yak, etc. But I know QuietStorm for one will appreciate it, he's pretty much responsible for me being a Cage fan. I had always known about him, but Hell's Winter completely changed my outlook. Anyyyway...

Just found this on his wikki but nowt much about dates etc

He is currently wrapping up on the second iteration of Traintogo, re-e seen titled Dat Missile. The time has allowed him to re-tweak Dat Missile into a well crafted and solid effort. With 70% of the production done by The Neptunes, additional beats by DJ Toomp and guest spots from Three 6 Mafia, David Banner and the Clipse. Dat Missle was set to hit stores on October 25 via Star Trak/Interscope Records, but as yet to been released. Its first single is "Da Beeper Song," produced by The Neptunes and the video was shot by Hype Williams.

Fam-Lay can be seen in a cameo shot in 2005's Can I Have It Like That video with Pharrell. Also he can be seen sitting in front of a car in the Clipse's music video 'Mr. Me Too'. In 2005 Fam-Lay cut off his signature cornrows now sporting a low cut. Da Beeper Record Video shot by Hype Williams. The second single is called No Time 4 No's with Pharrell and Clipse which is actually from Fam-Lay's unreleased album Traintogo.

Posted this in the Best of '08 thread but might as well bump this baby too with some links. These are two excellent albums..

Here's links to a couple of the albums I've been raving about. Really, they're in my top 5 so far this year. Hip-hop started off really slow, but now there's a lot of great stuff out and on the way.

Elzhi - Euro Pass (http://rapidshare.com/files/114988567/Elzhi-Euro_Pass-_An_Exclusive_Tour_CD_-2008.rar.html)

Jazz Liberatorz - Clin d'oeil (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8IVIP9JY)

Elzhi has been one of my favorite rappers for a while now, he always stood out in Slum Village. This is an awesome promo CD, mostly produced by Black Milk. There isn't a single bad track....

Which can also be said for the Jazz Lib album. I recommend EVERYONE checks this out, rap fan or not. It's a great blend of jazz and quality hip-hop. No nonsense, just good music. Features Fat Lip from Pharcyde, Asheru, Sadat X, Buckshot, J-Live, and many others. GET IT! :D

Again, posted this in the best of '08 thread, but it's all hip-hop albums, so enjoy fuckers.... :D

J-Live - Then What Happened (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=FB7XUGRB)
Not sure if you have this or not, but it's a must-have in my opinion. Again, we have some good summer beats on this album. Definitely a big jazzy and soulful feel to the production. J-Live himself is an amazingly gifted emcee who is also a school teacher.

9th Wonder and Buckshot - The Formula (http://rapidshare.com/files/115105465/Buckshot_and_9th_Wonder_-_The_Formula_2008_www.beatboxradioshow.blogspot.co m.rar)
You probably already know about both of these guys, so not much explanation is needed. This is their second album together, and better than their debut in my opinion. Buckshot is from Black Moon/Boot Camp Clik.

Nicolay and Kay - Time Line (http://rapidshare.com/files/90366268/Nicolay_and_Kay_Time_Line_Breezilla.rar) rar password = Breezilla
Nicolay is an extremely talented producer from the Netherlands who has done an album with Phonte from Little Brother (called Foreign Exchange) among other projects. This is a great album with a relatively unknown emcee, Kay, but he still delivers.

Kidz In The Hall - The In Crowd (http://rapidshare.com/files/121577318/Kidz_In_The_Hall-The_In_Crowd__2008__by_B2K8.rar) rar password = thaeastsidaz.blogspot.com
This is the sophomore album from KITH, and I find it pretty enjoyable. They switched from Rawkus records on their debut to Duck Down (Boot Camp Clik's label) on this one. Somehow that switch means a load of hot guest spots, this album features Phonte from Little Brother, Camp Lo, that Travis fucker from Gym Class Heroes, Estelle, Skyzoo, Black Milk, Guilty Simpson, Sean Price and Buckshot (of course), and then Pusha T from Clipse, Bun B, and The Cool Kids on the remix of their big single. Don't let the amount of spots fool you though, these dudes hold their own. Naledge is the emcee and Double O handles the majority of the beats.

Akrobatik - Absolute Value (http://rapidshare.com/files/107311166/Akrobatik_-_Absolute_Value__2008_.rar)
This is Akrobatik from The Perceptionists group with Mr. Lif. This isn't the very best album of the year, but it's still very good. Features Little Brother, Talib Kweli, Chukd D, Mr. Lif, and Bumpy Nuckles among others, so you know it's quality.

Little Vic - Each Dawn I Die (http://rapidshare.com/files/103126219/LV-EDID-2oo8-westcoastgospel.blogspot.com.rar)
I hadn't heard about this dude at all when I saw this album, so I passed over it for a few weeks. I heard a lot about it and finally downloaded it, and it was worth the hype. I don't know too much about him other than he's a nice rapper and has Kool G Rap on his album.

Blue Sky Black Death - Late Night Cinema (http://rapidshare.com/files/119624521/Blue_Sky_Black_Death_-_Late_Night_Cinema__2008_.rar)
As I mentioned, this is an instrumental album. This is a duo of two AMAZING producers. They don't have a hue amount of material out, but they seem capable of so many different styles and sounds. This is almost trip-hop trance like shit, it's very earthy (if that makes any sense) and has a lot of awesome switch-ups throughout the songs.

Ayatollah - Louder (http://www.zshare.net/download/115141017dfb798a) rar password = wtorek
Instrumental album from a well established but underrated producers from NY. He's done work for Cormega, Mos Def ("Ms. Fat Booty" which everyone loves), Talib Kweli, Masta Ace, Royce Da 5'9", R.A. The Rugged Man, lots of songs from Inspectah Deck's The Movement, Sean Price, and many others.. you get the picture. This is soulful, laid-back shit.

They're advertising GZA as "performing Liquid Swords"... Like, the whole album? Is that right? I'll probably go anyways, but that would be amazing.

Does anyone know a good site for downloading hip-hop acapellas? I'm not finding what I'm looking for at like acapellas4u.co.uk or anywhere. It's "The Seed 2.0" by The Roots and actually I dunno if there was even an acapella on the single. On the other hand, I sometimes stumble upon random acapellas of old songs that apparently exist only for remix service, so who knows.

Holy shit, GZA doing Liquid Swords live is some dream-status shit. I wouldn't miss that for the world. I'd get a damn job just to afford the trip/tickets. I remember when Jay did Reasonable Doubt all the way through in NY a couple years ago. I wanted to go so bad, but I think it sold out ridiculously quickly. But yeah, GZA The Genius... GO!!!!!!

No idea when Ghost is hitting the road solo. All I know is he and Raekwon are performing at Rock The Bells and being billed as "Cuban Linx" so that's gotta be a good thing :D

Here's another treat for everyone, since I know a lot of people here are big Immortal Technique fans. This is supposedly some sort of retail album/mixtape, I guess it's a prequel to his highly anticipated next album. Anyway, it's mostly all new material as far as I know.

Turns out that Liquid Swords tour isn't hitting Philly, but Atlantic City instead. Still close enough to check out, but once again money is an issue. Plus I just checked out a video of GZA doing "Duel of the Iron Mics" at last years Pitchfork Festival, which was the first time he performed the album live in full. And the whole 'hype men' crap going on, that finished nearly every line for him really annoyed the shit out of me. It'll be well over a here since that show when he starts this tour, so maybe things will be hammered out a bit more as far as production for the show goes, but if that's the kind of thing that'd be going on, I'm happy enough to pass.

So I got home from work last night trying to figure out what the fuck I was going to do with myself, when my phone rings with a number I don't have programmed in. For whatever reason I didn't let it go to voicemail, and they guy on the other end was a friend of a friend who I know via reputation only. He offers me a ticket to go see The Rza, so I obviously fucking take it.

Now, we all work in the music industry out here, which is why I tend to never pay for shows. However, when we get there our tickets aren't at will call as they should be. Homie hits up Divine (Rza's brother and manager) and he says to just hold tight and he'll come get us in personally. We wait for 30 minutes or so and are about to say fuck it and just buy tickets when Divine comes out and takes around the back of the venue. We enter BACKSTAGE as fucking Rza is going on.

Incredible fucking night. Great fucking show. I watched him dump 3 bottles of Belvedere on the front section of the crowd. Met him after the show. Stayed up til 5 drinking tequila.

Thought the lot of you would appreciate that.

Old School will be: Ice T, Big Daddy Kaine, Kool G Rap, KRS One, Rakim, LL Cool J, Slick Rick, EPMD, Schooly D, Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Method Man, Redman, Wu-Tang Clan, Gangstarr, Tribe Called Quest, Bone Thugs N Harmony, CNN, Onyx, DMX, Big Noyd, bring back da Juice Crew, and pretty much every rapper from early hip hop to 2000.
New School: Soulja Boy, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco will turn heel, Hurricane Chris, Webbie, Lil Boosie, Nas and Jay Z will turn their backs on the old school rap that made them who they are, G Unit, Mims, and any new school rappers or who hate the new school.....hahah
The sales in hip hop will raise like heck in a very long time. And even independent people that are still not major it'll the beef would help them. Rappers like Saigon, Grafh, Jae Hood, Jae Millz, Crooked I etc.

The sales in hip hop will raise like heck in a very long time. And even independent people that are still not major it'll the beef would help them. Rappers like Saigon, Grafh, Jae Hood, Jae Millz, Crooked I etc.
Also, I like to say is: Who is da most underrated hip hop artsit in history?
I believe dat it is without a doubt Big Noyd. He could have been very big, but he is still big in hip hop. Eventhough he should be more known though.

Since Stringer sent them to me, I have been listening to Blue Sky Black Death & Jazz Liberators non-stop. Fucking lovely albums.

Also been listening to a fair bit of the Elzhi & Kidz In The Hall which are both rather super too.

Glad you like them, man. That Jazz Lib is a must-have is you ask me. It's nearly impossible to dislike. Elzhi is just a beast of an emcee with great production behind him.

Here's something that made me :D I don't think it needs any introduction....

Have you heard this latest Bullion 7" TRO?

Downloaded "Rude Effort" t'other day from some blog.

I think if I can find it on wax I'm just going to go ahead and buy it. Pretty dope beat. And I love this quote: "After listening to the new Bullion joint, i drove back to Detroit, and punched my mom in the stomach. FILTHY." DJ HOUSE SHOES

Kind of reminds me of the theme from Legend of Zelda 2 for NES.

I did get his latest mix, the gold theme one? Pretty good stuff, still nothing as brilliant as the Pet Sounds remixes, but good.

Didn't even notice it missing. Pretty strange considering all the hype for the video and video screening.

The production is a lot more varied as opposed to the heavy work he's done with LES, Salaam Remi, and Chucky Thompson the last few albums, so it should be interesting to hear.

I dunno about you guys but it always sounded like a track made for mixtapes to me. I still thought it would make the album but I can't say I'm surprised it's not on there.

Is stic.man the guy that came up with the bassline for "Hip-Hop"? Cause if so, he's a genius.

Stringer Bell

"Black President" screams mixtape-only track much more than "Be A..." in my opinion, but it doesn't really matter at this point. Album should be excellent regardless.

I can't say for sure TRO, but I would assume so, since he did most (all?) of their production.

EDIT: This is... interesting... http://videos.onsmash.com/v/rzUbJMPUzZ3x5qTH

I love the goofy smile on Jay's face throughout. Despite what anyone says about Oasis, that song is classic.

I haven't seen a more epic 1minute and 50seconds in a long, long time. Anyone care to disagree?

That was just awesome.
Anyone got a good downloadable version?

Stringer Bell
June 29th, 2008, 5:28 PM
Indeed it was, I'm still loving this, maybe even more than earlier today. The fact that the biggest (make no mistake about it, he is) rap star in the world can come out at a huge festival and cover an OASIS song with a huge, genuine smile on his face is too good for words. The stuff legends are made of.

I'm interested in an mp3 version too, so I'll post it up as soon as I find one. Do the same if you happen to come across one, please Rune :D

Why the fuck would you want an MP3 of that? I mean, conceptually, it's awesome. But it's executed like shit. Jay's audible with about every fourth word. I doubt if I'll ever even watch that clip again.

Badly.

Ringo
June 29th, 2008, 7:16 PM
That Jay-Z Wonderwall cover was pretty awful really, but it looked as though he was having a great time and I'm sure it would have been fucking enjoyable to see in person. If it wasn't for the thousands upon thousands of people singing along it would probably constitute a "MURDER".

Morrison
June 29th, 2008, 7:28 PM
Of course. He definitely was enjoying himself, and being a part of it live would be astounding, but viewing it in this context, as a YouTube clip, pretty much? Yeah, Bell's overblowing how great it is. Epic? Not even close. If he would've maybe put effort into making something out of it, other then a nice local reference and a 'concert moment' for those in attendance, like maybe singing along to the first verse, then flipping it and riffing on the beat and throwing his own verse/freestyle in there, then I'd be inclined to say it's 'epic.' As it stands right now, it was just a good time.

Mantaur
June 29th, 2008, 7:35 PM
He was just taking the piss out of Oasis because one of the brothers said he shouldn't be headlining the show. I doubt he had any intentions of making it "epic".

And I suppose it's not "epic" in the sense of some things, but for 1:50, it's impressive. Apparently he blended in 99 Problems and some other songs with it, too.

Just so everyone knows, the Nas Nigger "Advance" floating around on the web is NOT legit. It's a collection of leaked songs someone made on the computer.

That said, more and more songs seem to be leaking by the day. Lately, it's been 2 tracks every day. By the time the album drops, we'll already have it :D
