Wow, the new Jazzy Jeff album is really, really good.. and that's just judging an edited promo version. The tracks with J Live, Big Daddy Kane, and CL Smooth are my favorites... just incredibly smooth, laid back beats. Perfect summer afternoon music. My question is, where the hell has Jazzy been all these years? He comes back and drops some shit like this, which sounds fresher than almost anything out. Ridiculous.
It's called "The Return of the Magnificent"... get it, you won't regret it.. it's also got tracks from Jean Grae, Method Man, Posdnous from De La, Rhymefest, and more..

Finally got round to buying Canibus:2000 BC, to complete my collection including his mix tapes. This is the first time I have heard it and wow it's superb.
This album is definetly, without doubt the best album I have ever heard. Beats normally come first in most artists album, followed by lyrics but this has both at an equally high rate. There are at least 8 excellent tracks with good beats but better lyrics, followed by 5 tracks with weaker beats but equally excellent lyrics.
Guess I saved the last to best as I think this just edges out Rip the Jacker.
With his new album out soon, I'm banging in his CD's every chance I get.

The Curriculum is his most amazing album to date, just because it came completely out of nowhere with no expectations attached and with little to no publicity. That was his masterpiece, the one that I'll remember 20 years from now not including what FWTBT and everything post-now might contain.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I thought. I might have hyped it up a little too much, but man.. the good songs are so good. I didn't mind all of the R&B stuff, but that "Touch Me With Your Hands" song is pretty bad, period. J Live, BDK, and CL kill it, though.
The Marco Polo LP is pretty thorough too. I love all of these producers coming out and dropping albums with numerous artists. I'd love to see Premier, Bronze Nazareth, or even Kanye do something like that.

Like I said, it's really not a big deal.. I'm sure most of us could care less. It's just in this day and age, it's nearly impossible to stop things from getting onto the internet soon after the copies are pressed up. The odds of you having a legit copy are pretty slim already, but then you had to throw in the whole "I got it from Waste Management, Bis sent me 1249023 mp3s, I'm cool" line, which makes it all seem like bullshit. Well if i said, it would sound like I was, as someone put it, acting "all high and mighty" and elite thus looking down on everyone.
But if you want to know, I work for a cannabis magazine which has a substantial music section. And if you know anything about the industry (not saying you don't, i'm just saying that it's typical), you would know a lot of labels and management companies send out advanced promotional copies sometimes a month in advance. Mine doesn't have a cover or even a booklet, it's just a cd in a blank jewel case and is watermarked with my name. Meaning if my specific copy is leaked, my name is all over it.
So THAT is why they would trust me.

8/10 for Hell Hath No Fury sounds about right to me. Quite the departure from your original feelings on the album, huh Adamy? :p I think there are certainly spectacular points throughout the album, but it's not perfect.

Just got some new Lil Wayne tape.. The Empire and Lil Wayne - Carter 3 Sessions. I dunno if it's official or what, but it's some of Wayne's best stuff. I just can't deny this guy anymore, he's truly on fire. Very few rappers are so fun to listen to..
"I Feel Like Dying" isn't really even one of the best songs on the tape..
Been bumping the fuck out of tha Bus/Vinnie Paz track.
Mr. Boombastic
June 14th, 2007, 2:19 AM
I have a few of Wayne's earlier cd's and it is pretty weak; however, one of my friends at work has really turned me on the him for both Tha Carter, and Tha Carter 2, in addition to several mixtapes and I must say that Lil Wayne has been one of the rare cases where he has seemingly improved and stepped up his lyrical flow and content with each album, rather than becoming more and more derivitive like most rappers with each new release (probably cuz he is still quite young).
I cannot wait for Tha Carter 3, because outside of Nas and Talib Kweli, I do not think that there is a better mainstream rapper out there right now.
Stringer Bell
June 14th, 2007, 1:09 PM
I still need to go back and listen to both Carters. They had some fun songs that I enjoyed when they were out, but I never really took Wayne seriously back then. I'm sure there's plenty of good stuff to be uncovered there...
I used to be one of his biggest haters on here, but I just can't deny the guy anymore. What you said (Boombastic) is very true, he seems like he's actually enthusiastic and determined to improve and step his game up every time out. No matter what the subject matter, even if it's something tired and old, he seems to spice it up and make it much more entertaining than it has any right to be. If nothing else, that's Wayne's best trait. He's definitely at the top of the mainstream rap game..
He sure has come a long way from sounding like a retarded child in the "Back Dat Azz Up" video...

'The Unknown' is actually a Bronze/Kevlaar album that came out in 2002. Some good stuff on there, but you could tell they were still developing their styles. Their production and rhyming skills are way better now than it was back then. Still worth checking out.

Just wanted to say I've been enjoying the new Aesop Rock track, "None Shall Pass." Not sure how much its been talked about here already, but I'm gettin a bit hyped for the record. Glad to hear Blockhead's gonna be back, he's a sick producer and I find myself enjoying Aesop more when he's in the picture. Also, I hear Block and Aesop are both producing tracks on the new record, so does anyone know who did the None Shall Pass track? If it is Ace, I gotta say he's upped his game a good amount since Bazooka Tooth.
And more on topic, I'm finding myself more and more interested in Tha Carter 3. I've developed a bit of a soft spot for Wayne lately.

MM .. Food
Madvillainy
The Special Herbs box set
Viktor Vaughn
Take Me to Your Leader
Operation Doomsday
Mouse and the Mask
I feel like I'm forgetting something.
I do love that King Geedorah album, though. I just like the others even more.

Nice ranking, Hack. Guess I'll rank mine too while its on. For me it goes:
Take Me to Your Leader > Operation: Doomsday > Madvillainy > Mm.. Food > Vaudeville Villain > Mouse and the Mask
Only ranked proper albums there so I didn't include the Special Herbs boxset, even though its immense. But yeah, Doom's gotta be at least one of the top rappers of the decade, no doubt. Wanna get my hands on some KMD soon, also.

Has anyone gotten this Pac mixtape? I have never came across it. It's over a year old, but I just downloaded it yesterday and I'm loving it. It's a duet album akin to Biggie's, except amateur made. The sound quality is really good which by default puts it above half of the mixtapes out there, and the instrumental and artist choices for the tracks are great. One of the best "concept" mixtapes out there.

Dilla is godlike.
The Kweli album is SO incredibly thorough. Is it in stores yet? I gotta buy that one. 9/10 for to me...
I like the TI, I dunno. I like it because you know he's real and NOT bullshitting you like most of these rappers, TI has been saying the same shit since he came out. It's hard as fuck. I like Jay and surprisingly Em's verses a lot. Eminem's isn't anything mind-blowing, but it's fun... gets me going. Reminds me a BIT. of vintage Em. But Jay-Z, he kills it. TI himself is pretty nice throughout the CD. I'd say it's about 50% dope, which is the case with most every rap album (however good) these days..
The Act's are cool and serve their purpose. Plus there. "Big Shit Poppin" is a monster of a single in my eyes. "Raw" is one of my favorite tracks on the album. "You Know What It Is" is alriight, "Da Dopeman" serves its purpose and is a pretty good track. "Watch What You Say To Me" is probably my favorite track on the whole thing, absolutely love it. Beat is a little boring, but TI and Jay murder it. "Hurt" is a DOPE!!! song. Shit gets me pumped every single time. "Help Is Coming" is the best beat, Just Blaze did a masterwork right there.. TI did nice with it, though the hook seems to get on my nerves. Oh well, still a helluva song. "Touchdown" grows on you, that's all I can say. "Tell Em I Said That" is one of the best songs as well. The last two songs are okay, but not standouts really. The rest of the album I don't really give a fuck about to be perfectly honest. But go give it a second chance, cuz ya'll ALL know I wouldn't spend this much time praising it if I didn't enjoy it. It's definitely something I might be sick of in 6 months, but right now, it's doing the job for me..
Back to Clipse Hell Hath No Fury -- definitely a 9/10. 8 sounded right at the time, but I've been listening to it all week and, this album is near perfection.

I dont really dig PLI 3 & 4 as much as I thought I would. The concept is awesome, but the mixing is sloppy, and a lot of the rhymes are disjointed. I've heard better, more cohesive mixes at canibus-central. I prefer the original 45-minute version over both of these 11-minute mixes.

I agree. For all the hype, the album just did not really deliver on all fronts. I've bought the album and I'm stll banging songs off the King album, while T.I. vs T.I.P. sits untouched in the passenger's seat. I like "Raw", "Hurt", and "Show It To Me" alot. "Big Things Poppin'", "Da Dopeman", "You Know What It Is", "Tell 'Em I Said That", "Touchdown", and "Help Is Coming" are alright. "We Do This", "My Swag", "Don't You Wanna Be High", "My Type", and "Respect This Hustle" all suck.

Yeah. Love the instrumental, it's a really well-produced track. T.I.'s opening verse is killer, in my opinion (and hilarious). Nelly does well enough on the track. As far as the Nelly song, it's just weak. Especially when "Help Is Coming" is just "decent" or whatever. Just Blaze MURDERED that beat. But meh, each to their own, just sayin'... I don't even like TI, and this album knocks.
Com hasn't leaked, but should soon.
I think I'm going to make Kanye West's album the first album in as long as I can F'ing remember that I haven't downloaded the leak of, and go buy it the Tuesday it drops. That experience is just one-of-a-kind, and I haven't felt it in so long. Fuck a web leak.
SAT- Didn't notice the recycled Deck verse. Guess people on the Wu forums didn't either  Did the Rae part remind you of that horrible "We Pop" from Birth of the Prince at all?
Just for the hell of it, because I'm listening to this tonight. I think there's a thread for it somewhere, changes you would make to albums or some shit. Anyway, nothing major here, just some changes to a near-classic in my eyes.. switching the order a little, dropping some filler.

I definitely feel like Common really stepped his game up lyrically on this one. I mean, he's always been one of the GOAT's, and he had plenty to say on Be, but something about the lyrics on this one really hit me. I think it's because they're a bit more versatile and touch on so many different concepts, as opposed to Be. Lyrically, this album is damn near perfection in my eyes.
One thing that I can't say about Finding Forever, is that it doesn't have any track that (in my eyes) matches the strength of the intro/title track "Be". That song was awe-inspiring, and to this day gets my head nodding straight away and mouthing every single lyric. Sadly, as amazing as Finding Forever is, there doesn't seem to be a song with that much grace/power (I don't even know what word I'm looking for to be honest :p).. "Be", the song, was literally the perfect hip-hop song in my eyes. Anyway, despite this album lacking a song with such presence (which is a hard thing to do in the first place), I think I am enjoying the overall album more than Be.
The production is MUCH different, so it's hard to even compare the two on that front. I love the work Kanye and will.i.am brought to the table, it's oh so refreshing and has such a unique vibe to it. Kanye doing his best Dilla impression is nice throughout, and makes for some excellent songs. What's even more intriguing is the stuff we're hearing from Kanye on this album is most likely going to be NOTHING like the production on Graduation, so I'm super-excited for that.
One thing, I wish I hadn't downloaded tracks like "The Game", "Black Maybe", and "Misunderstood" before the leak, because they are amazing songs and are MEANT to be heard in this fashion. Once again, Frofiles, you are lucky my friend! Enjoy!
I was especially pleased when I heard new lyrics on "So Far To Go". The original from Dilla's The Shining was perfect as is, and would've fit the album fine, but now instead of one excellent track, we've got 2. Good look, Com.
It's hard for me to say an album is 5/5, because I don't even remember the last time I have... but this is the first time I've felt an album deserves something close to that in quite some time. Of course I need to let it digest some, don't want to speak too soon and all. But this is without a fucking doubt, 4.5/5 at the least, according to my ears.

Anyway, despite this album lacking a song with such presence (which is a hard thing to do in the first place), I think I am enjoying the overall album more than Be.
As far as I'm concerned, "Forever Begins" is that song. Living forever through song, it's just such a powerful concept put out there so precisely, a lot like "Be". Plus I'm a sucker for prose spoken over a drum beat.
Anyways, I would call it 5/5 and basically flawless. Not a bad track on there, and most of them are fucking great. It's up there with The College Dropout and better than anything Jay-Z and Nas and Ghostface have done lately, which is saying something. I haven't clicked with an album so quickly and thoroughly since I heard Blazing Arrow by Blackalicious, which is consistently my favorite rap album ever. It's just so timeless, sampling Nina Simone and the Isleys and the total boom-bap track with DJ Premier; Finding Forever feels like something I've heard many times in the past, but it's completely new. Hard to pull off. My favorite album of the year, so far.
So is it ok to like Lily Allen now?

I listened to FF for the first time last night, and while it was damn good, it didnt immediately pull me in like Be did. Some of the production here I know is going to take a few more listens to really grow on me. Lyrically, Com's always been one of the best, so there are no complaints there from me.

After listening to FF for a few days, I'm really digging it a lot more. Black Maybe and Driving Me Wild are my current favorites. It still has some flaws though. I Want You is just average. I was expecting more from Will.i.am after he laced Nas and Game with some awesome production. The first two verses on Break My Heart are kind of weak.
I also heard Desire for the first time yesterday, and this album is incredible. Monch's flow and storytelling are phenomenal. I wasnt really liking Body Baby, or Bar Tap though. I'd say its a 3-way tie for album of the year with Common, Monch, and Bis.
Stringer Bell
July 25th, 2007, 2:20 PM
Personally, as much as I liked the Monch, I don't feel it comes anywhere close to the Common album. Each to their own though. I just felt like Pharoahe had us waiting for what seemed like eternity, then dropped something incredibly average on us. I dig it, just not as much as everyone else.. I dunno.
I agree that will.i.am.'s beat is a little stagnant compared to the Nas and Game joints, but "I Want You" is definitely a grower. I didn't like it at all at first, but now I rock out to it.
One thing, Com could've ventured away from the love/lady topics a TAAAAD on this LP. I think that's the only thing that brings it down.. a little more variety as far as the lyrical content, and we'd be looking at a completely perfect hip-hop album. At the same time, he kills it, I love every song..

July 27th, 2007, 6:17 PM
I know Com is the hot topic of the moment, but I gotta go back and address that Kweli now that I've had a good month to digest it..
This record is SO close to perfection, it's right on par with the Common album. The only thing the Kweli lacks is the cohesive, brilliantly executed full album feel.. it works in places, but not throughout the entire LP. It's still excellent though, every track is truly a banger, and some are pure classics. 5/5? Just maaaaybe. Eardrum is incredible, Kweli touches on so many areas and emotions throughout the sixteen tracks, with his usual lyrical skill and wit. Not to mention the mind-blowing production, almost every beat is SERIOUS. Some are better than others, but I can't really find one bad one throughout the whole thing, which has been impossible to say about the last couple Kweli records. Superb.
I love, love, love this album, and I'll be buying it when it comes out. Sucks for Kweli that his albums always leak so damn early, this is the one he's had in him in the whole time... not saying it's his very best work, but I'm falling in love with it all over again. According to Amazon, it's got a 8/21 release date, but they also haven't updated the release date for Graduation to 9/11, so who knows. Eardrum is getting my $13 without a doubt though..
I'll say 4.8/5, maybe even closer to 4.9. The only thing that keeps this one from being PERFECT in my eyes is the lack of cohesion, at some points it feels like it jumps all over the place. I love the "Soon The New Day" into "Electrify" transition, but this one could've been laid out a bit better overall. Maybe he could've used a few producers more instead of the variety. One thing I really dug was how Madlib's tracks were hardly anything like the Liberation tracks, other than maybe "Everything Man". But Kweli could have had another Just Blaze joint, another Kanye track.. they could've handled one of the other tracks already on the album ("Country Cousins", "Hot Thing", "Listen"..) and given it more of a cohesive, better flowing feel. Regardless, Talib Kweli is the TRUTH, and this is going to be one of 2007's top 10 hip-hop albums, no matter what drops.
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/61pv7JR-9NL._AA240_.jpg
Honestly, 2007 looks like it's going to be one of the best years in hip-hop in quite some time.. between Talib, Com, Monch, Canibus, Sean Price, Evidence, Camp Lo, Aesop Rock, etc. etc.; and upcoming stuff from Kanye West, Wu Tang, Ghostface/Doom, Nas, UGK, Cage (hopefully), Raekwon (hopefully), Dre (hopefully), Saigon (hopefully), and so many more... this could be my favorite year in rap music since 1994 by the looks and sounds of things, but that might be a bit too optimistic...

So I went to Rock the Bells last night and it was pretty freakin' amazing. I guess this could be a spoiler for anyone who's going to one of the shows...
Wu, Nas, Cypress Hill and Jedi Mind Tricks were all solid, and Immortal Technique was VERY impressive (especially for me since I hadn't heard much of his stuff before). The only disappointment was Pharoahe Monch, who I'm sad to say was pretty damn boring on stage. MOP and David Banner were no-shows, but considering there were sets pretty much non-stop from 3 to 11 I didn't really mind. Supernatural hosted, and he was just incredible. I've heard his famous battles and seen that "Freestyle" documentary, but seeing him do his thing live just blew me away. Dude has SKILLS. He freestyled inbewteen every set, and even had the people in the front row hold shit up from their pockets which he then rapped about.
Wu did a few songs from the new album, none of which sounded very impressive. But of course at a big concert venue it's hard to get a feel for new music. Ghostface was nowhere to be seen, unfortunately. Oh and at the end of their set Meth shouted something like "Go Yankees!" which obviously got a good reaction from the crowd (the show being in Massachusetts). Funny stuff.
Cypress Hill had this huge blow-up Buddha on stage which was sick. Also they sparked up a bong in the middle of their set. Nas lit up a blunt as well, right before "Life's a Bitch".
Overall it was one hell up a hip hop show.

Meh, I dunno. The Joell album is damn good, but I wouldn't give it quite that much praise. He's super-talented, and has some great beats and guest spots throughout the album, it's just nothing particularly memorable.. has that "mixtape" feel, although I don't think it's meant to be an official album anyway since he's on the Aftermath roster.
I like the album, don't get me wrong, it just faded away quickly for me. Maybe it'll make it that much better when I decide to dig it out again. The "125 Pt. 1 (The Bio)" and "Brooklyn Bullshit" are definitely standouts in my eyes...

And Termanology is a nice emcee in his own right, but he's not anywhere on Pun's level, either. At the same time, he probably didn't mean for that line to be taken 100% seriously, unless I'm completely clueless and he's said other similar things..
The thing that frustrates me about Termanology is that he seems so convinced he's so amazing, and that's usually all he ends up rapping about besides the usual thug bravado. Rarely does he actually convince me that he is indeed that amazing. Don't get me wrong, I love the guy's music, I'd probably say I like him more than Ortiz at the moment. I just think he's developing quite the ego for such an unproven rapper. Look no further than his new "So Amazing" joint, which has a BANGING Premier beat, but basically contains no lyrical substance other than Term whining about not having a deal and not getting noticed. I dunno, I really like the guy as a rapper, and I want to see him do well, but ALL these mixtape cats need to learn that no real hip-hop head is going to take you seriously until you prove you can put together a complete album. The exact same goes for Saigon, as much as I love him, and the internet's favorite love/hate poster boy Papoose, who I personally can't stand.

I'm digging the new BCC album. It's obvious why some of these tracks were left off The Last Stand, but songs like The Hustle, I Need More, BK All Day, and Casualties of War are damn good. I guess a new OGC album is out of the question? Top Dog has 2 verses on this album, Starang has 1, and Louieville isnt even on it.
There's news of a new Smif-N-Wessun album with Ken Ring & Rune Rotter, which are the same guys that did Trading Places from the Last Stand, and War from Reloaded. Sean P's got Mic Tyson, DIRT, and an album with Black Milk and Guilty Simpson coming out.

 Yeah, that "Can't Tell Me Nothing" parody is great. Reminds me of when Weird Al had a few quality parodies. "Amish Paradise" or whatever especially comes to mind. It's just hilarious though.. whoever Zach Galifianakis is, he's pretty damn brilliant. I had heard about the guy before I saw this, but this makes me want to look into more of his stuff...
Agree with you on both sentiments as well, Ice Cold. "125 Pt. 1 (The Biography)" or whatever that first track is called on the Ortiz album is just a BANGER in every sense of the word, I love how his flow sounds so hungry and relentless...
I know Hack 's Doom, but I can't agree fully there. Beer Belly, I'd say just go for whatever's most convenient when the time comes.. but I'd definitely make an effort to catch some of both sets. To me personally, seeing Wu live is a true once-in-a-lifetime experience, their show in DC in Feb '06 still remains my favorite concert ever. The energy and atmosphere just can't be described in words. Then again, I did see them at a club, so obviously it'll be a bit different. Sorry I got rambling so much, but to keep it simple ---- I'd try to make sure you see at least SOME of both of them. I know I'd be disappointed to miss either of them, and that really sucks that they're going head-to-head.. but do trust me when I say Wu Tang is something you don't want to miss. Even if you watch the majority of Doom's set and then head over to the main stage, just do what appeals most and is most convenient when the time comes is my best advice. Just don't miss the whole Wu set for god's sake! ;) Fro probably nailed it in far less words, just go for whoever you're personally a bigger fan of... but at the same time, I'd do my very best to try to catch some of both acts. Have fun!
I'm digging the new BCC as well, though I haven't really immersed myself in it yet, unlike some of the recent albums. It's definitely not quite on par with The Last Stand, but it's still a hard album nonetheless. My main complaint is that some of the beats are a tad lacking. I would've liked to see Illmind pop up again on this LP, it seems like he very rarely puts out weak beats and "Let's Go" was a banger on TLS. Would have enjoyed a few more contributions from Marco Polo as well... "My World" is far from his best stuff. And last but not least, I think they should have had 9th handle one or two more tracks. I absolutely  some BCC + 9th Wonder, especially when Sean P is on the track. Good, hard album as always from these guys.. just need to let it digest a bit more.
Weeks later, I still think the Common album is phenomenal. I'm not yet sure how I'd rank it next to Be, but it's without a doubt 4.5/5 material. The production and overall presentation as an album is outstanding, much like Be, which something most rappers have a hell of a time getting the hang of. Of course, that all comes down to the executive producer, so I gotta tip my hat to Kanye West for yet another job amazingly done. In my eyes, the only thing that keeps this Common LP from being absolutely perfect is 1) the length (of course, sometimes less is more as long as it's quality, which it is, but this is two SHORT albums in a row from Com.. 15 or so tracks would've been ideal) and 2) the lack of diverse subject matter. Don't get me wrong, he addresses plenty of topics with his usual wit and intellect, it just seems like a few too many tracks were for the ladies. They're all truly excellent songs, but when there's only 11 songs total, you gotta vary it up a liiiitle bit more. It's not a bad thing by any means, it's just what prevents me from giving it perfect 5/5 praise. I think that the songs where he touches on deeper areas, like "Black Maybe" and "Misunderstood", they just stand out that much more. I love Com, and had to lay my money down on this album. However, I gotta cover one more thing that I mentioned a few pages back.......
Talib Kweli is my favorite rapper by far at the moment. Now that the retail of Eardrum has leaked, it's blowing my mind even moreso than the advance copy. The track order's been changed a bit, as well as a few new additions, and it's all for the better. Even though they ruined my favorite transition of "Soon The New Day" into "Electrify" (which is now titled "Stay Around"), I can't complain one bit. If anything, I think it's a bit more cohesive than the advanced copy. Contrary to the Com album, Talib literally touches on just about every area and emotion you could expect from a rapper, and then some. We all know he's always sharp lyrically, but I feel like he stepped it up more than ever on this album. Couple that with some of the best production I've heard all year (Madlib's concoctions on "Everything Man" and "Soon The New Day" are still blowing me away), a limited guest list with artists who are truly deserving (Norah Jones, Kanye, UGK, KRS-One), and one of the most intellectual and conscious albums I've heard all year... it's damn near perfect. I know Black Star and Reflection Eternal will probably always be considered as Talib's best work, but with Eardrum, I truly think he's made his classic masterpiece. I would post a link but there's no reason you cats shouldn't buy this album at the end of this month... 5/5? Just maybe.

Bottom line, Eardrum is my favorite album of the year so far. As hyped as I am for the new Kanye album, which has about a zero percent chance of disappointing, I'm not sure he's going to be able to top Talib.

I must be retarded, I haven't been able to find the Oh No album yet :( I looooved his Exodus... LP last year with Galt MacDermot samples, awesome stuff. I still bump the Posdnous track on a regular basis. If anyone would be kind enough to throw a link my way, I'd be oh-so grateful..
I agree about the Horsemen track, SAT. Not horrible, but I was damn excited when I saw the track on paper, and it's quite a letdown. I'm liking the album a lot too, although Eardrum is my album of the moment by far ;)

I saw Wu-Tang. MF Doom only performed for twenty minutes. I just didn't feel like getting split up from my group for such a short set. Wu-Tang exceeded my expectations.
The Roots and Blackalicious stole the show. Mos Def and Talib did some Blackstar stuff and that was pretty cool to see as well.
Worst part of the whole thing: the throngs of Rage Against the Machine fans. Ugggh, what a bunch of fucking idiots.

I only had enough money for one album yesterday, and since Priest wasnt there (as is the case with almost all the albums I really want), I had to 'settle' for Kweli. I hadnt heard the album yet, and after the way SB was hyping this up, I had high expectations, and it delivered. Definitely feeling the tracks with Madlib the most. Would someone please post a link to 'Liberation'?

Glad you had a good time, Beer. The Roots live are definitely an essential in my eyes, Wu stands as my favorite show of all time, but in all honesty The Roots probably had a better live show. Just amazing music, and seeing ?uestlove tear up the drums in person is almost surreal...
And  at the RATM comment, I can only imagine. They were outrageous in the Peter Rosenberg video of the NYC show..
Hope you enjoy it Fro, I certainly think you will.
That's pretty shitty that the Priest LP is difficult to find, I definitely would have picked that up soon. I still haven't been able to track down Black Milk's album anywhere. I'll probably end up ordering a bunch of albums from the Internet towards the end of the year, I guess..
And very glad you're digging it SAT, I woulda felt like an asshole if it didn't live up to my hype. I really can't fathom how any hip-hop fan wouldn't enjoy the album. Maybe it just clicks really well with me personally, but I think it's incredibly close to being perfect. Agree 100% about the Madlib tracks, he stole the show on that LP, even managed to outshine Just Blaze, whose track is GREAT in its own right. "Soon The New Day", "Eat To Live", "Everything Man".. just wow. I didn't even realize those were all Madlib beats until I saw the production credits... he seems to get better and better with every single step he takes. I know people are (in)patiently waiting on Madvillain 2, and I can't even imagine what mind-blowing shit those 2 are going to come with, whenever the time comes...
As for Liberation, the original version that they released for free online had fairly poor sound quality, so I don't wanna accidentally link you to that. I guess they ended up releasing it retail later in the year, because a CD quality rip eventually surfaced. After this post, I'll RAR it up and upload it. It's a dope EP, but I definitely didn't get into it the way I am Eardrum...
EDIT: Here we go, enjoy.. let me know if Rapidshare is an issue.

Lame that the Madlib link already died, I'll try to throw up another one of those tonight. Oh No seems to be fairly hard to come by, but I do have a version where it's all in one 40:00 track, I can post that too. Might be able to find a Camp Lo link. Devin The Dude will probably be tough to find a fresh link for just because it's been out for awhile, but I'll upload it if need be..
PS -- Eardrum is only 9.99 at Best Buy and Circuit City until tomorrow. Cop that shit foooooooooooooools! I went to Best Buy today and was shocked to see that it was sold out. Good for Kweli.. hopefully he'll make a decent showing on the Billboard chart.

MF DOOM Fucks SF?: WTF Went Down, Bay Area?
Thu Aug 16, 2007 at 12:55:34 PM
We just got this email:
People who may care-
Last night MF Doom gave a big F-you to fans in San Francisco. After
keeping us waiting for over an hour between opener Pigeon John (on top
of making us endure P.J.'s pathetic performance), Doom walks on stage
with two cronies, *lipsyncs* four songs, then walks out without
uttering a single word to the bewildered audience.
Upset fans stood in front of the stage for a good 15 minutes chanting
everything from "refund, refund" to "lipsync, lipsync". Super-fans
refused to believe it was true. Others claimed that the man behind
the mask was an impostor.
His performance wasn't even as good as a bad Milli Vanilli concert.
We were absolutely stunned, as were those who ran the venue, The
Independent. I talked to the manager last night, who was livid but
unhelpful, and to one of their employees today on the phone. They are
in touch with the promoter, presumably trying to get their money back
before issuing refunds to the disappointed crowd.
Thought you'd like to know
Thanks, Dave.
Is this true? We know MF Doom has been sucking live, but this would be a new low, and right before rock the bells! Let us know! The most revealing comment will get a five pack of CDs from the office. -d2
MF DOOM Fucks SF?: WTF Went Down, Bay Area? Pt. 2
Fri Aug 17, 2007 at 09:59:03 AM
Damn, MF Doom really screwed up from the sound of things. Here's another complaint out his show this past week, this one from Joshua in Roseville.
"Someone should write something up about the MF DOOM show last night at The Independent. I drove from Roseville (past Sacramento) to see the show and the guy waits over an hour after Pigeon John played to come out and play only 16 minutes and then walk off the stage and leave! The crowd was PISSED!! The anger in the room was amazing. It could have been a riot in there! The promoter came out and apologized up and down and said that he was just as mad as everyone else. Rumor is that he felt the crowd wasn't "into it" so he left! I guess you have to scream while throwing your arms in the air the whole set to boost this guys fuckin' ego. I love MF Doom's music but that shit he pulled last night was disgusting!! There should be a write up in the weekly about this shit!"
What happened? MF Doom meltdown? :(
I'm glad I didn't miss Wu-Tang for this non-sense. I can't imagine why Doom would do this to his fan base. If you really need to get out of a gig (or an entire tour) then at least have the decency to cancel.

Anybody else heard the Young Jeezy presents U.S.D.A. album? If so, what do you guys think of it? I really do like the album. There are some songs that I just don't care for at all. But, overall, I think they made a pretty damn good group album. I think that the promotion and chose of singles was done horribly, but the album itself is really nice.
I'd rate each song for best to worst like this (#1 being the best):
1. Corporate Thuggin'
2. Throw This Money
3. Ride Tonight
4. Focus
5. Check
6. Get It Up
7. Go Getta (Remix)
8. Respect Da Shield
9. White Girl
10. What It Is
11. Live My Life
12. I Keep Tellin' Myself
13. Quickie
14. Pam
I think they should have done videos for "Ride Tonight" and "Throw This Money". The video for "Corporate Thuggin" is pathetic and brings down the mood of the song. "White Girl" is one of the worst songs on the album yet it was the first single.

Here's something REAL for ya'lll
CD quality leak of a new Kanye song, "Homecoming" featuring Chris Martin... yeah, the lyrics are old, for you true heads you've heard them before on the excellent OG version, "Home", featuring John Legend. This new version is excellent too, though.

C'mon man, USDA? That shit came out months ago, and the music critics who think Young Jeezy is brilliant didn't even like that album. It's bargain bin bound within months.
On another note -- anyone heard about the ruckus stirred up by Nas being a part of the Virginia Tech Benefit bill? Bill O'Reilly said his usual ignorant shit to begin with (that's the first thing I saw, at least), going as far as to call him "Naz".. I wanted to punch my fucking computer  And of course he picked clips of the most violent possible Nas lyrics to play clips of, one of the songs I've never even heard before. Where's "I Can"? Where's "U and Me", his tribute to his daughter? It's not like Nas would show up and rap any of his violent songs
However, since then, word has it that seven or more of the families of the deceased have expressed their opinion, and they're pretty darn upset about Nas being on the bill. Which I can understand. I think Nas should, and being the stand-up, grown man he is, pull himself out, simply out of respect for the families. Don't turn it into some stupid "I'll do what I want" tirade again'st O'Reilly. Let Bill O'Reilly have his stupid fun. Be a man Nas, I'll have more respect for you than ever if you pull out on your own. And I'd LOVE to see that concert, I won't even be going now, but that's fine.. I'll have another chance to see Nas someday. I highly doubt he's going to be there at this point, but I just really hope he pulls out HIMSELF and makes a point to comment on it out of respect..

Yeah. I know when it came out. I still enjoy alot of the songs from it. I could care less about "the critics who think Young Jeezy is brilliant", I'm just posting my personal thoughts on the album. I like it. There are no spectacular rhymes or any song themes that make you think deeper or anything, it's just feel-good music. For the most part, it's filled with drug-lingo, so people involved in or enthralled by that lifestyle would probably be the ones most captivated by the album. That's not why I like it. I think alot of the instrumentals are phenomenal, the lyrics, while piss-poor, are unarguably catchy and "sing-along'ish" and each member of the group gives off an entirely different vibe with their individual voices and flow. I'm not telling you or anybody else to even give it a listen. I'm not telling you or anybody else to that this better than any artists who are clearly more talented than these three. I'm just saying I like the album (most of it). But, thanks for the feedback.

Are you serious? I mean, I haven't heard 50's album, but come the fuck on. I didn't even know it leaked, that's the definition of "not checking for" someone. Are you listening to the snippets on those foreign websites or do you actually have both albums in CD quality? Kanye West, and this album, is the future of music, period. 50 Cent will be a small blip in the history books, one would hope.
Something like "the guy who came out, flopped, then saw an easy chance to capitalize on another rapper's weak material, that of Ja Rule. 50's main use of ammunition during this feud was making fun of and imitating Ja Rule's "singing" and "soft" hooks and songs. Subsequently, he signed with one of the most famous producers in the rap world and aligned himself with popular rapper Eminem. He then engaged in a heated rivalry with Ja Rule and his underlings, which didn't lead to much at all except Ja Rule's popularity declining and some decent disses from 50, Eminem, and company. 50's debut on Aftermath came out somewhere around this time, and sold unlike any rap record that was recently released. This started the "50 mania", you could call it. For a while, 50 maintained his status as a credible, listenable artist who made good, but not groundbreaking, hip-hop. Somewhere along the line, and quite ironically, 50 began to adopt the exact same quality he once criticized his rival Ja Rule of. He embraced the sing-song, horrible attempt at singing shit that we've come to expect from rappers now. On top of that, he or whoever managers his laughable career, decided it would be better for him to go for a more mainstream, radio demographic. Instead of making an effort to put out quality music like a few artists (errm.. Kanye), 50 focuses strictly on appealing to the mainstream and selling records, which he doesn't seem to be very good at. Is there any more obvious example than him pulling and borderline-denying the existence of the horrible "Amusement Park" AKA "Candy Shop 2"? That song had radio written all over it, and still bombed. No one cared. Now he's made his last-ditch effort and pulling in record buyers, making his new single "Follow My Lead" with the current hot R&B singer of the moment, Robin Thicke".
Ugh, I wrote a little more than I wanted to there. Gave me a horrible headache just thinking of 50's decline, not that he was ever anything truly amazing. Still, I'm honestly shocked to see someone say Curtis is better than Graduation. I think if 50 sells more records than Kanye, I will move out of this fucked up country :p

I listened to the 50 album, albeit the clean version. I'm pretty sure that's the only thing available....
Makes quite a bit of difference with it being edited  Nearly half of 50's lyrics are blank, and that's not exaggeration. It doesn't even say words like "shot", it's almost not worth listening to. However, I will say, the first 2 tracks sounded surprisingly dope. Everything else sounded pretty stagnant, other than maybe 1 or 2 songs I can't recall. This is not a good album...
After that, I went back and listened to some Get Rich or Die Trying tracks. Now THAT'S some good stuff. Nothing groundbreaking, nothing amazing, but it's just hard shit. "P.I.M.P." is pretty horrible, and "21 Questions" is corny, but I can't deny it -- GRODT has a lot of bangers. "What Up Gangsta", "Many Men", and "Heat" are all great tracks...
Then I listened to some G-Unit stuff, Beg For Mercy or whatever their albums was called, and a few mixtapes. That was pretty hard to stomach, but Banks did used to spit some witty shit a few years ago. What the hell happened to that guy?
As far as my favorite 50 material, I guess it's Guess Who's Back or Power of the Dollar. I think people hype up Power too much.. it's some of 50's best lyrical stuff, but maybe it's just me, GWB has a lot more bangers.
But F this 50 talk. Kaaaaaaaaaaaaaanye West's album is on the internet! September 11th bitches!!!
Talib Kweli debuted at #2 on the Billboard!!! Props to anyone here who actually bought that, record labels are going to have to start taking notice. Common #1 one week off of "The People", which hasn't even popped off that much that I've heard, and Talib gets #2 with "Hot Thing". Awesome. I have very little doubt that Fif will sell more than Kanye.

50's album is truly horrible. "Ayo Technology" and "I Get Money" might be the best songs on the whole thing, amazingly.
Also, Swizz Beatz album is surprisingly tolerable. Nothing above average, I'd say 2.5/5 is pretty generous. Lyrically, it's pretty abysmal, but it's got a lot of fun, bouncy shit, it especially sounds nice in a good car system. I really like his track with Chris Martin too. Jay, Kanye, and Swizz have all made great songs with Chris...

So over the last few days, I've pulled out two CDs I hadn't listened to since the first few weeks after I first bought them: Kingdom Come and Idlewild.
On my fresh listen, it became crystal clear just how bad Kingdom Come was/is. The intro is tight, sure, and there are maybe two or three other songs that are above average, but everything else is just shit.
On the flip side, listening to Idlewild again was a lot of fun. I still think a lot of Big Boi's songs were awful, but Andre's material still just blows me away. How can so many hip-hop heads not see the undeniable creativity coming from that man? He's actually TRYING SOME NEW SHIT and it's refreshing to hear, even a year or so after the album dropped.
And I'm sorry, but it's hard for me to care about the new Kanye. I'll check it out, since College Dropout was a classic and about half of Late Registration was greatness, but both single I've heard from the new disc have sucked BALLS.

I haven't come across a legit version of Curtis yet, just a bunch of webrips. I downloaded a "group rip" this morning, but it doesn't seem to be legit. I don't really care at this point, but I'm sure I could sell a few copies to idiots around town.
Kanye's album is fucking excellent.   :D :D
PS: skulldice, aren't you the guy who lists Necro as one of his favorite/best MC's? I'm pretty sure that's you. You have no room to hate on the Kanye album, homie...

Well, I don't really see what is so excellent about the Kanye album after listening to it twice. It's alright, I guess. I still prefer College Dropout to anything he has done since.

Well of course, College Dropout was a classic.
