I stand corrected. It seemed like an mp3 playlist, as there's stuff like "(Dirty)" on some of the titles. Either way, that doesn't change much. The last portion of that list is really, really bad..

I haven't seen it, but I saw that it was coming on. Is it something with multiple episodes or just one?
On another note, one great rapper that is inevitably going to get left off of my Top 50 list is Murs. The man has hardly any mediocre material, and he's just an all around dope emcee, but unfortunately I don't think he'll be making the cut.
Same for Cage. I absolutely love Cage personally, he's one of my favorites, but I can't realistically say he's one of the greatest rappers of all time, ya know?
I'm basing this heavily on consistency, longevity, impact/influence, success (more so critical than sales), and overall skill. It's only going to be based on rapping as well, so even though J Dilla is one of my favorite artists of all time, he unfortunately won't be on the list, even though he has a lot of dope rhymes.

Well, I can see why someone might find him boring, but I really enjoy his stuff. He doesn't have to wow you with lyrics, he's just one of those rappers that truly 'keeps it real'. He's down to earth and honest, a quality you don't see too often in rappers. He's also got a pretty damn large body of work, and most of it is impressive. Between his older stuff, the Def Jux album, the 2 9th Wonder albums, and the 2 FELT albums, he's got a lot of quality shit. Not a huge fan of Living Legends, but he was nice with them too..

So I know this is random and all, but is it possible that Late Registration is the most overrated mainstream hip-hop album released in the last few years?
I still love College Dropout, don't get me wrong, I love that shit. But anytime I try to listen to Late, I never make it even close to the whole way through.
First, there are just way too many average/below-average songs to be the classic everyone (including me) was saying it was when it first came out. And it seems like he was much more obvious with his sampling this time, if that makes sense. "Touch the Sky" is great and all, but just listen to "Move On Up" from Curtis Mayfield's Curtis album and you hear the same damn thing. It's almost as bad as Mr. Combs himself was a few years ago.
Maybe it's just me ... other than "Drive Slow" (another obvious sample) "Diamonds" (another obvious sample, but I don't care because it is SO SO AWESOME) and "My Way Home," which should have just been on Be, I don't listen to that CD much at all anymore.
Stringer Bell
January 20th, 2007, 12:16 PM
I remember when it came out, people like jesus sucks were calling it a classic and naming it next to albums like Illmatic. I'd say it's about a 4/5 for me personally.. like you said, it's not quite on par with Dropout.
Songs like "Roses", "Addiction", and "Celebration" should have been left off. They're not necessarily bad songs, but they're pretty boring and nowhere near as good as some of the stuff.
Other than the tracks you mentioned, I still really like "Heard 'Em Say" (something about the beat is just so smooth..), "We Major", and "Gone", which was one of my favorite songs of all of 2005...

Sampling in 2006 aka "Primo should slap you"
So, the turnover of hip-hop fans has finally started to take a toll on hip-hop production and people's views on it. If sampling lawsuits killed hip-hop, then the information age is poking rap's cold, dead body with a long, pointy stick. Repeatedly. In the jewels.
Know how many sample queries I get per week via the internet? Hrrmmmmbout...20. Know how many I answer? Hrmmmmbout...none. Know how many of those 20 people cuss me or go on about how I shouldn't sample anyway because its "stealing" after I ignore them? Approximately 1/3. Know how much of a fuck I give? A tiny bit less than a little. Some call it a 'smidge', I prefer 'pinch'.
See, heres the thing. When I was a coming up, I wouldn't have DARED write Primo a smarmy letter demanding to know where he got the sample for Mass Appeal. I don't care if you made beats or not, hip-hop heads simply knew what time it was when it came to samples and sampling. If you couldn't find it yourself, you didn't deserve to know. Period. The only time I ever heard anyone get pissy and say "Why do you need to steal other people's music? Why don't you just make your own?" was out of the mouths of old white guys that shook their fists in Anglo-anger as I passed in my busted ass Pontiac LeMans blastin "Deja Vu" on the Kicker 12's. Mad cus Steely Dan got touched. I hear it more often now, but it comes from so called "rap listeners". They'll praise someone like RJD2 or 9th Wonder all day, but when rebuffed in sample inquiries will retort with "That shit is stealing anyway, why can't they be original?" Who the fuck is YOU?
Not only that, but these same dorks will love a song, yet when they finally do scour the internet hard enough to come up on the song Alchemist sampled for the latest Mobb Deep track they'll say "I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH"
Flip it enough? Flip these. Flip off. Go flip some fucking burgers.
Hip-hop music was born from THE LOOP. Some of the illest beats of all time are simple 2 bar loops with drums tossed on them. Of course I appreciate chopping when it is done well and serves a purpose, but somehow the technical aspect of it has become a measure of beat quality? So you can hop on Limewire right quick and download a Leon Haywood MP3, now Dr. Dre is wack? Tell me again why you lost interest in Green Day and decided to become Mr. Hip-Hop Knowledge Guy? On top of that, folks also want to complain about drum compression, sequencing and mixing and a whole host of things I never cared about when I was just a fan. Bottomline, did it move me? Folks are sucking the soul out of the music.
Finally, the old "such and such a person used this sample, so this newer song is WACK". I'm gonna shoot you straight. I can't listen to every got damned backpacker ass group who sold 53 copies of their CD off their MySpace page and had a feature on www.rapbeetz2000.org.
"Rap is an art you can't own no loops
It's how you hook em up and the rhyme style troop
So don't even think you could say someone bit
off your weak beat come on you need to quit"
This is where I'm coming from. I hear or read reviews or hear discussions about our records, and a couple people always chime in talking about "Oh, such and such used this on their "CD-R Only" demo in 2001." Why is it always some super-obscure material they bring up? Mac Mall used the same sample as "Caved In" before, but guess what? All I hear about is how Kanye used it on an UNRELEASED INSTRUMENTAL off of Talib Kweli's bootleg that could only be found ON THE INTERNET. See what I'm getting at?
Apparently some group named Cyne used the same sample from "Remember Me (Abstract/Reality)" back in 2003. Never heard of em', nobody I know has heard of em', don't care. Downloaded the song and, no offense to any party involved, its about as boring as underground rap can get. Drums suck, no real change ups, no layers, nothing. Yet, because some group that I had never heard of used the same sample as me, some people are going to INSIST on pointing out how I'm supposedly wack for using it? I can definitively say two things about people like this; you are no more than 3 years removed from puberty, B: the inside of a vagina is something very foreign to you and C: you need to learn some sh*t about hip-hop music before opening that little oxygen vacuum you call a mouth. Ever heard of Bob James' Nautilus? Everyone and their mom has used that record, and about 20 CLASSIC hip-hop songs have sprung from it.
My philosophy is this: I'll never hear a song and THEN try and GO FIND the record that was sampled so I can make a beat out of it too, that would be biting. But...artists...give me a reason not to use the same sample as you or to feel bad after the fact. Why exactly should I refrain from using something that you have already used? I need to allow you to WASTE AN ILL RECORD because of the 10 people that heard your song? Add to the fact 95 percent of the time theres really no chance I've
even heard your track in the first damn place, and I DO keep up with hip-hop in order to not be redundant with sampling. Let's REALLY take it back to 1990; outdo me or shut up.
Bottomline...is it dope or is it wack? As a fan, that is really all you should be concerned with.
Does this sound like the rant of an old man? Probably, but that is my biggest issue. I'm NOT old, yet the outlook of 'hip-hop heads' has changed so drastically over the past 6-7 years that I feel like I'm 70 when it comes to rap. So, whatever. I'll be over here wearing Depends, eating Mueslix, listening to Timbaland instrumentals.
Peace!

It's said that one of the meanings behind rapper Q-Tip's moniker is his ability to get in your ears. A few listens to his verses on any Tribe song is a testament to the fact that his nickname is well earned.
The Queens-born rapper's latest project is an album called The Renaissance, his first since 2005's Open. Rather than hire a handful of top-shelf producers, Tip decided to put a band together for a more organic feel. Billboard recently caught up with Q to discuss what motivated his move towards live instrumentation this time around.
"I wanted a hip-hop sonic feel, something pure to the sound of hip-hop with real drums, real emotion and people taking solos. In that sense this record feels like we're moving in a new direction ... something hip-hop should do. [...] You can hear we were having fun without regard for anything, It's that spirit people picked up on."
Unlike most of his contemporaries, the guest-list for Q's album is sparse as well; Common, Andre 3000 and D'Angelo are the only three guests confirmed right now. The rapper's attitude towards guests is both rare and refreshing for a genre that sells records based on whose name appears in the track list.
"Sometimes guests don't really warrant an appearance."
Amen to that, Mr. Tip. Look for The Renaissance to drop this spring.
AWESOME!

Dr. Dre To Work With Papoose On New Album
Word is spreading that Papoose may be working with Dr. Dre on his long anticipated debut, The Nacerima Dream.
Though his freshman LP is reportedly completed, Pap is still stacking up material. While the Brooklyn emcee has already worked with DJ Premier, Kanye West, DR Period and Pharrell Williams for the album, Dre may just make it into the final track listing.
"It ain't final till it's final," Pap told SOHH regarding Dre's production. "I got some joints though."
Though a release date has yet to be set, Pap vows not to sit on the shelf this year. He promises that his record will sit amongst hip-hop classics once it finally hits stores.
"At the end of the day, my material, my music speaks for itself," Pap explained. "I never came into this with no gimmick. I never had to diss nobody to get no attention. I always came with pure talent, pure material. I ain't gon let ya'll down with this album, straight up and down. My album gon' make history."
Papoose's The Nacirema Dream is scheduled to hit stores later this year.Well this is a pure example of how people over hype things too much 'n too easily. Same thing when Dr. Dre was going to do work with Nas on HHID, song that featured the Game. Everyone was expecting it to be the song of the year. But it wasn’t.
I'm just guessing Dr. Dre is going to give him a nice beat and Papoose will just spit his usual stuff.

1. Intro - Buddah Bless opens up the album with a decent verse. Nothing spectacular, but a good opener. 7/10
2. Maxine Remix - This beat is nice, but it doesnt match the story like the original. 7/10
3. King Toast Queen - Uses the same beat from one of the interludes from the Think Differently album. U-God needs to cut the bullshit and hook up with Math for a whole album. They blend together well. Lyrically, this track isnt much. 6.5/10
4. Where's Brooklyn At? - Math flips a classic Biggie sample for the beat. Bad Luck kinda sounds like Black Rob. 7/10
5. Treez - Rae spits over a nice piano beat, but apparently this is an old verse. 7.5/10
6. Eggs, Hash & Grits - Other than the first track, this is the only song so far not to have a reused verse or beat. Nice beat, but verses are wack. 6/10
7. Pop Shit Skit - This beat was used to much better effect on 'Love Hell or Right'. Completely unnecessary. NA
8. Queen's Day '88 Remix - Didn't like this track from LHR, and dont like it much here. The beat should have been saved for something better. 6.5/10
9. U Dont Care - I cant remember the last time Killah Priest rapped over a Math beat. The beat is really laid back and KP spits a sick verse. 8/10
10. Masked Avengers - Shyheim & Hell Razah close this track nicely. The beat is really simple, but works well. 7.5/10
11. Luv Skit - NA
12. Wanna Believe - I dig Allah Real, but Bad Luck isnt that good. 6.5/10
13. Wu Banga 101 Remix - Considering the original was one of Math's best beats, he should've left this one alone. The new beat is pretty dope, but cant compare to the first one. 7.5/10
14. The W Remix - The beat is ok, but nothing special. Dont know why he felt the need to remix tracks that were already damn good. 7/10
15. Violent Skit - NA
16. Street Kronicles - Really nice beat on this one, but M-Speed doesnt do it much justice. Meth or Deck would have sounded better over this. 7/10
17. Non-Equivalent - Shyheim got worse as he got older. Decent lyrics, nice beat. 7/10
18. Outro - NA
19. Wise Remix - Heartfelt Ghost solo. Math tried to go for the "All I Got is You" feeling with the beat. 7.5/10
20. Rap Burglars - Rae & Deck spitting over a dark beat. This is the definite stand-out of the album. This is probably 10 years old as Deck spits the 3rd verse from "Word on the Street". 8.5/10
If you're a Wu head like me, there's enough material to keep you interested. However, a lot of Math's MC's are spotty and end up wasting his solid production. Considering there's a whole bunch of unreleased Wu shit that wrecked in RZA's basement flood, this album set me up with unrealistic expectations. It's still worth a listen though.
Lyrics: 7/10
Beats: 7.5/10
Overall: 7/10

He's right though, it's definitely not hip-hop. Well I mean not definitely because genres are stupid, but it's nothing like his previous albums, or Soul Position. It's like he listened to The Outsider and said "hey, I can do that too, except better" and then did it.
I decided not to see the Roots the other night, because there was no Lupe and it was $30. Fuck that. Braille and Ohmega Watts next week for $10. Much better deal.

I been gettin' my Cher in like Sonny Bono/

And I actually thought some of Wayne's best stuff yet was on the Like Father, Like Son album. It's not as introspective as some of The Dedication, but it's what made me realize he wasn't totally shit.

DC is the murda capital. (Or maybe he meant the comic book company, like he's Superman or something.)
And I actually thought some of Wayne's best stuff yet was on the Like Father, Like Son album. It's not as introspective as some of The Dedication, but it's what made me realize he wasn't totally shit.
Yeah, I guess it's kinda corny. But what I like about Wayne is that you can tell that the guy loves rhyming. There's this sense I get whenever I listen to him that he's really, really happy just to be rapping; that attitude, the way he uses his weird I'm-tired-and-blazed sounding voice, and the way he fits words together just make me love him.

As for the Wayne line, no matter how you cut it, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It's a guy from New Orleans saying "I'm so DC" without any real explanation. Of course, sometimes the best lines are the ones open to interpretation, but this isn't really one of those.

Matthew...
Since you like Pete Rock.... Pete Rock & CL Smooth's The Main Ingredient and Mecca and the Soul Brother are essentials in my book. It might be a little dated for you, but I think you'll dig it if you like Pete's production. He's up there with RZA and DJ Premier to me.
Any Gangstarr stuff. Most notably Moment of Truth. Definitely get that album. Production is handled entirely by DJ Premier, and it's probably their most accessible and definitely one of their best albums.
You might like Little Brother's stuff. The Listening is a good place to start.
J Dilla of course. Donuts is all instrumental stuff, but still a good starting place. Go for The Shining and Welcome to Detroit after that, all the while picking up on the countless remixes and tracks he did for other artists.
Saigon is really dope, he's one of the few NY mixtape guys I really like. Most people know I think Papoose is overrated as hell, but Saigon delivers. His flow is insane, he's witty, and he covers subjects that most rappers don't really get into. Just Blaze is handling the majority of his debut LP, so we know that's going to be crazy. For now, Warning Shots and the new Return of the Yardfather mixtapes are good picks.
Oh yeah, anything from Wu-Tang is probably going to be quality, especially earlier stuff. 36 Chambers, Wu Tang Forever, Liquid Swords, Ironman, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Supreme Clientele, Tical, Return to the 36 Chambers... all ESSENTIAL as fuck.
And if you can't find any of this stuff, or want more ideas, just IM me...
Matthew
February 10th, 2007, 4:02 PM
I have 36 Chambers.
I also dislike Papoose. I don't rate him, because I haven't heard a whole lot from him. But he just seems like a generic NYC rapper.
I shall start my downloads now.

So apparently Jurassic 5 is about ready to call it quits as a group. This is really too bad because their three major label releases were all dope as hell. Feedback, as I've stated before, was one of my favorite albums of last year. Their old school style and creative wordplay was pretty unique in today's hip hop scene. Much love to J5.

RZA's co-signed some shitty MC's before, but Free Murda has to be the worst. This album's full of synth-bullshit beats and south-style knockoffs. The only standouts are RZA's beat on "This one's for Dirt" and "You Know How It Goes" with Timbo King.
What's up with Jus Allah? On VBD, his rhymes were disgusting, but dope (beat your skull in the shape of a wet bag of laundry). His second verse on the Snowgoons album is just creepy. He's rumored to have an album coming out in December, so hopefully he goes back to his old style.

Stringer Bell
February 27th, 2007, 2:14 AM
Yeah, it's a Pac diss pretty much... the only true Pac diss I believe. There's also his line on "Brooklyn's Finest", I think the first time he mentioned Pac. Then there's the "dump her in the sewer" line... and numerous tracks on Life After Death which are thought to be Pac disses, like "Long Kiss Goodnight".
Puffy is the rapper in the background of "Who Shot Ya"..

I went to see Clipse perform last night. It was a real good atmosphere: a small, underground venue with an energetic crowd (it was at the Middle East if anyone is familiar with the Boston scene). I was about 10 feet from the stage. Malice and Pusha were definitely impressive... they came with a lot of intensity and projected very well. Ab Liva and Sandman came on to perform a couple verses each. It was a real enjoyable show except that the set was WAY too short, only about 50-55 minutes. Notable songs missing from the set included "When the Last Time," "Ma I Don't Love Her," "Hello New World," and "Trill."
Wish I could provide some pics but I'm currently sans camera.

Yea, shit, I haven't gotten much new hip hop lately myself. I've been listening to some old school Boot Camp Clik, Hell Hath No Fury (mostly just because I saw Clipse live the other day), The War Report, and that "Josephine" track by Hi-Tek/Ghostface damn near on repeat (soooo good).
Here's something sort of interesting I found on imdb: RZA was offered Anthony Anderson's role in The Departed, but turned it down because of scheduling conflicts.

Hip-Hop is dead, guys. Didn't you get the memo?
I went to a Mountain Goats show the other night though, which was incredibly awesome. They played "The Boys Are Back in Town" for no apparent reason. I really didn't think they were going to do "No Children", but then BAM last song of the encore, with everyone singing along, it was magic I tells ya.
Really though, I'm not surprised that there isn't a lot of hip-hop to talk about right now. The past six months have seen incredible releases from The Roots, Lupe, Nas, Clipse... Not to mention Jay-Z, Ghostface, Game, J Dilla, Cut Chemist, etc etc... I'm just a little worn out of all the rap lately, 2006 was maybe the best year for rap in a long while, time to take a break...

If that's the case, I highly doubt you'll enjoy this one. Not to hate on southern/mainstream rap, but it's just not very good. I actually thought Welcome To Cashville was a pretty decent album, but this new one isn't even close to its level.

I actually liked "Welcome to Ca$hville" a lot. "Bang Bang" was probably one of the best tracks that I heard that entire year. The sample was put to really good use and the album just seemed to flow from beginning to end.
This album, though, was just seems like it was over hyped and under delivered. Even the main single "Get Buck" just seemed corny. The lyrics were too simple and repetative to me. "Ca$hville" as a phrase was really nice back in '05, and "Ten-a-Key" was ok back then as well ... but now it's just over done.
 over...

Yeah, the Devin is dope. Just a really fun album. Gotta add "Almighty Dollar" (hilarious) and "Don't Wanna Be Alone" to your list. "Lil Girl Gone" and "She Useta Be" are great, too. The whole thing is awesome though. It's not perfect hip-hop music, but definitely 4/5 for me.
This Redman seems like it's hit and miss. It starts off pretty well, "Back Inda Buildin" and "Gimmie One" are crazy, and the single is cool.. but some of the second half seemed to fall in to the Method Man problem of an abundance of synth, club style beats. I'll give it a few more listens though, been waiting for this one.
The production on the Prodigy is amazing. His rhymes truly are hit or miss, missing more often than not.. but it's almost worth it to hear the awesome Alchemist production.
Edit: The more I listen to the Redman, the more I dig it. I don't know if it's because it's the first Red I've heard in years and considerably better than his last album or what, but this shit is dope!

OK ... someone care to explain this one to me?
Despite that he seems to lose more and more fans with each release as he goes further "out there," Canibus continues to put out more and more material. He gears up to release his tenth (!!) album this spring with For Whom The Bell Tolls. While he may be making some bad albums over the last few years, the man can still blaze a microphone when it comes down to it.
No stranger to making 100 or 200 bar songs, Canibus will continue his incredible Poet Laureate series this album with the 1000 bar Poet Laureate Inifinity. 1000 bars?!? I know right, but it's not quite what you think. 'Bis explained this track to XXL.
"The album is 17 tracks and “Poet Laureate Infinity” is the grand finale on the album. There are 1,000 bars in that track and due to the way it’s layered, it’s an infinite rhyme. When youmix it and spread it throughout five channels, [you have the ability] to mix the track differently every time. Because when you hear the mix, whichever one you hear, you are only listening to one layer at a time. But there are four other layers there. You are only going to be hearing 200 bars per record. But at any moment and every moment, there are 800 bars that you’re not listening to. So I’ve created something that’s never been done before. Every time it’s mixed, you’ll hear a different song."
:wtf:

The new Timbaland is making its rounds on the net. Verdict? Standard affair. Good beats, but a lot of the raps are uninspired. He's at his best with the hip-hop pop stuff, or the instrumentals. 2 Man Show with Elton John on Piano is probably the standout, but it's the only song that's actually begging for some more vocals. The three tracks with Justin Timberlake, one of which features Nelly Furtado and another Missy Elliott and Dr. Dre are pretty good as well.

It's cool, but I'm not a huge fan of the abundance of R&B vocals and the 3 rock collaborations. It's a fun CD, but mostly just for some of the beats and the catchy tracks... So I saw The Roots play earlier this month. As always, the show was outstanding and they continued their streak of adding something new to their performance each time I see them play (this was my 4th show). The lights dimmed, but as the audience awaited the band's entrace they began to hear music coming from behind them. Suddenly ?uestlove and the gang emerged from the lobby, all in line and playing a beat with with drum sticks, tambourines and cow bells as they danced their way to the stage. Behind the normal band members came a fantastic brass section, complete with tuba, sax, trombone and trumpet. One of my friends said he saw them play with the bass section before, but this was the first time I ever saw them. They played almost the whole show (which lasted over 2 hours) and had a great round of solos. There was also an impressive second drummer.
They played about half of Game Theory and most of the old hits you'd expect them to. No Malik B showing which was too bad, but Black Thought did his and just about every other guest verse himself. For about 15 minutes they ran through a number of popular beats, ranging from hip hop classics to current radio hits (they played "This is Why I'm Hot" and the crowd went nuts). When they did "Paid in Full" Black Thought rapped the first verse. Later, they did something similar only with classic R&B songs.
Guitarist Kirk Douglas had his typical 20 minutes or so alone with the ?uest, which is always enjoyable. Also, ?uest's solo was OFF THE HOOK, as good or better than any I can remember him doing before.

The more I listen to the Timbo, the more some tracks jump out. "Way I Are" and "Miscommunication" are both MONSTERS of pop songs, I can see them both blowing up. "Fantasy" and "Scream" are decent, too. I think Tim's certainly found his niche with this album, and it's the pop with hints of hip-hop that he's been perfecting for the past couple of years. I still think the rock songs feel really out of place and bring down the album, but I'm actually warming up to a lot of the female vocals. Keri Hilson sounds outstanding.
"Come & Get Me" is surprisingly one of the strongest tracks... also one of the only straight up hip-hop tracks.
And for fuck's sake, Fall Out Boy are absolutely horrible.

I'm glad I could encourage someone else to see them, because in my opinion The Roots are BY FAR the best hip hop act to see live.

After a couple listens, Don't Quit Your Day Job! is dope as hell. Great beats and very impressive lyricism from Consequence (even though his flows all kinda sound the same). Standout tracks:
Don’t Forget Em – DOPE Kanye beat that, though clearly glowing with his style, is pretty unique from anything he’s done before.
Uptown – Consequence rips the shit out of this club banger that should definitely be a single if it isn’t already.
Night Night – Hard hitting beat with crazy synth, and Con drops some of his best rhymes:
Now let me drop the science like Tom Cruise
on why I keep the iron every time you see Con’s crews
cause I know niggas out here probably thinking I’m all snooze
and if you thinking that, then you niggas are all fools
Very, very nice.
Uncle Rahiem – Gritty battle track with Con going into fight mode, and I love the chorus: I told that motherfucker grip up, grip up, nigga grip up, grip up, and I’ll be waitin right here when you slip up
Grammy Family – Another fresh Kanye track, and though the beat isn’t as inspired as the first it’s still very good with Kan and Con both bringing their best.
Who Knew My Luck Would Change - Heartfelt, soulful anthem of rags to riches to close the album.
The Good, The Bad, The Ugly is also on here, but that track's been out for years. But it is tight as hell so I don't mind putting it on for those who haven't heard it.
This album is solid up and down, and I think it will hold up against the upcoming major releases and be considered one of the best of 2007. Kanye is definitely helping some great artists get into the limelight with John Legend, Lupe and now Consequence.
To be honest, I like this album a good deal more than Food & Liquor.

Prodigy's Return of the Mac mixtape. It's definitely good, I just have a hard time listening to Prodigy for extended periods nowadays. I find myself listening to a few tracks and then cutting it off :dunno: Beats are pretty smooth, though.
I like the Redman more, but that's just me. Red could've done without some of the filler himself.
The Consequence album is cool, but I had higher expectations. Doesn't touch the Lupe album in my opinion.

March 28th, 2007, 6:53 PM
Yeah I agree there is some filler, I didn't even realize it was a mix tape. I definitely think the beats make this disc, but that's the type of shit that gets replay from me.
Rotten Apple... Love shit like this.
I also love how "Stuck On You" goes from love song to gangsta and back again like 5 times, ha ha.
Also 3:05-3:30 on "Bang On Em" is some TIGHT production right there..

Yeah, Alchemist flips a lot of tight shit like that. Seems like on a lot of songs towards the end, he flips a couple samples together at once. I don't know if he's just playing the song he originally sampled (like will.i.am did on "Can't Forget About You") or what, but it's dope and makes for some cool moments.

This would be the very same one.
Honestly, if you are looking for some more merengue/spanish hip hop type stuff, I would definitely give "El Mariel" by Pitbull a listen. I had it in my truck today and it was just banger after banger for me. I skip about 4-5 tracks, but it's a 20 track album, you can't ask for much more. All types of drums, bongos, tamborines and the like.

I actually still have that Big Pun album with "100%" on it. The beat is bananas ... and I just loved Pun as an artist. Great choice. Another favorite off that album for me is "My Dick." Just take a listen if you haven't. Fun record.
Pitbull is some hellafied Reggaeton/Cubano hip hop. He has major production from Lil' Jon, so just think spanish lyrics with crunk beats throughout.
And yes, Bojangles was his jam. But he also has "Ay Chico," "Jealouso," "Jungle Fever" (which Wyclef did his thing on...) " and "Que Tu Sabes D'Eso."
Yes, they all have spanish titles, save one, but the lyrical content isn't really the subject here. The songs rattle the truck and that is really the reason I have the CD. Some true club hits on this album, albeit that they are mainly latin."

That Cilvaringz album is pretty fucking awesome. It sounds like he had a lot of Wu production to it, not just the name attached. It's really, really good, sounds like it was ripped straight out of the mid-90's. I already have it, but I want to check out the DVD that comes with it, so I'm buying it when it's officially out.

If anybody ever wants to check out some great hip-hop writing, Jeff Chang's Can't Stop Won't Stop: The History of the Hip Hop Generation is a great read. I just finished it last night.
To be honest, it might be the best music book I've read. Period.
It starts out by covering the early history of New York City and the creation of that area's early gangs. I think it wasn't until page 200 that guys like Grandmaster Flash entered the picture. In other words, dude did his homework.
Anyway, here's some better info. I can't recommend this book enough.

Five 200 bar verses, all overlapping, all over the same beat. The website is a flash object with a mixing board so you can move around in between the verses. All 5 of the verses are, line for line, impeccable and eye-popping.

I've been on a smaaaaall mainstream kick lately. I mean, I always listen to the stuff that stands out to me, but it seems like I've been listening to more of it lately. Southern artist posse cut #4234052, DJ Khaled featuring everyone - "We Takin' Over" is a hell of a song. Right when it seems like I hate Akon more than ever, he comes with his catchiest hook yet. Not to mention everyone's verses are decent fun, especially T.I. and Wayne's.. not much new there though.
Also just random other songs. The Consequence single with John Legend is great as well. And umm... I've actually been enjoying "Throw Some D's" :$

So I saw Common and Lupe Fiasco at UVA last night. Really fun show...
Lupe was good, but I honestly thought he was a little boring. Better on CD, judging by the show I saw. Wasn't bad by any means, just not as great as I was hoping. He did all the songs you'd expect. A couple mixtape cuts to start things off, then got into all the album stuff - "He Say, She Say", "The Cool", "Hurt Me Soul", "Sunshine", "I Gotcha", "Kick Push"... no new stuff unfortunately. He lets his singer Gemini do a brief rap, which sounds just like something from Twista, who's also from Chicago. Whatever. Good show from Lupe though, just not amazing.
Common was DOPE though. Definitely recommend catching his live show if you have a chance. He's touring with a band and an AWESOME DJ, whom I wasn't familiar with but really tore the place down during his solo. The drummer's excellent too. Common entertained through the whole set, from break dancing to spitting a rap where he rhymed landmarks of our hometown. He played mostly Be stuff, which was really awesome with the live band. Played 2 or 3 new songs as well which sounded fantastic. Did a short tribute to Dilla with "The Light".. I wanted to hear "So Far To Go", but I can't complain. Honestly wasn't too sure how Common would come off on stage, but it was great. Go see him.

Dunno if anyone's seen this already, but here's some info on the upcoming Common album:
Vibe Magazine revealed some details on the new Common LP, Finding Forever LP, due this July 10th on Geffen. The rapper told the magazine that the concept of the LP revolves around former collaborator / roommater, J. Dilla "living on forever in the music", after his Febuary 10th, 2006 death of lupus. The magazine posted the following tentative tracklist, with credits, although this only represents a portion of the record. Prepare to drool....
"The People" (featuring Dwele; prod. by Kanye West)
"Black Maybe" (featuring Bilal; prod. by Kanye West)
"I Want You" (prod. will.i.am)
"Southside" (featuring and prod. by Kanye West)
"Misunderstood" (Nina Simone sample; prod. by Devo Springsteen)
"Drivin Me Wild" (featuring Lily Allen; prod. by Kanye West)
"So Far to Go" (featuring D'Angelo; prod by Jay Dilla)
"Break My Heart" (prod. by Kanye West)
"Start the Show" (prod. by Kanye West)
Vibe also reports that producer Kanye West attempted to chop his beats in the same fashion as J. Dilla, in honor of the legendary producer.
