T"The Time: Donuts of the Heart,"

Love it when the Wu comes up in this thread. Was listening to C.R.E.A.M earlier with a massive smile on my face after my run, I challenge anyone to say that song doesn't bring a smile to their face!

Glad your man mentioned No Said Date too, really thought that was a solid effort, and eagerly awaiting Masta Killah's next effort. Especially as he's up there with the Rebel INS, GZA, RZA and Ghostface as my fave Wu members... and that's the thing that's so great about WTC, everyone has their favourite members, tracks and albums. What's even better is, as much as you discuss and argue, there's no stark difference, because it's all good shit.

 WTC.

Hack, a question for you. I'm a fan of MF Doom's work, but haven't been exposed to a lot of it, mainly Madvillainy and Dangerdoom. I'm very tempted to pick up Mmm Food, would this be a wise decision?

Really looking to The Roots album too, been playing a lot of their stuff recently, although was disappointed somewhat with The Tipping Point last time out. The Seed (2.0), what are people's opinion on this track? Interested to know what the hardcore hip-hop fans on here think of it.... (obviously I know it was Phrenology)

I know you're not asking me, but in my opinion, I wasn't too impressed with it. The only standout tracks on the album for me were Deep Fried Frenz, One Beer, and Beef Rapp. The rest of the album didn't stand out too much for me. It, along with Dangerdoom are probably my two least favorite Doom efforts (with Dangerdoom mainly because I'm not really into Dangermouse.) You said you've heard Madvillain, which imo is way better than Mmm..Food. It's probably my second favorite Doom project, behind King Geedorah (which I recommend.)

Dude, MM ... Food is my favorite MF Doom album.

"Hoe Cakes" is outstanding, "Potholderz" is fresh and features some killer rhymes from Count Bass D, "One Beer" is produced by Madlib, "Deep Fried Frenz" is possibly my favorite Doom track of all time ... and that's just the first half. There are a lot of skits, which people complain about fairly often, but they aren't really skits like Wu-Tang used skits ... they're actual productions, like on an old Public Enemy album. Oh, and "Rapp Snitch Knishes" with Mr. Fantastik ... that's another all-time favorite Doom track.

So, if you want my opinion, it is essential Doom. Obviously, some people disagree.

I haven't heard it, but I wouldn't really go by what Rapreviews says. They've been putting out shitty reviews for years now. I'm not saying every review is poor, but a lot of them are..

"The Seed 2.0" was a nice little song. Far from one of their best, but it was a good single. Black Thought had some thought-provoking rhymes as usual.. not much else to say. I wasn't a big fan of the hook, but it could've been worse.

MM ... Food is a fucking great album, btw. No other MC has the balls to rap about cookies and superheros and shit for a whole album. And it's crazy how a lush wearing a metal mask can be so much more emotionally honest about friends, women, and life itself, than almost anyone releasing records today.

The track More Soup by Moka Only feat. Doom beats all contenders, anyways.

Moke and Doom keep it sewn like an open wound /
Two scientists up in the lab who make it go kaboom /
They like "don't mix those two properties together /
Probly end up with some empty eye sockets or whatever"

How someone can't love MM.. Food is beyond me. I've got countless nights stacked up where I just layed in bed listening to it. Smooth shit.

Anybody else have this Bedstuy Meets Blues Eyes mash-up record? Got a bunch of Sinatra songs mixed with Biggie lyrics. Nice little album, if you're into that kind of thing. And if you aren't you should at least love the mash-up of "Juicy" and "New York, New York." Preety fitting that the King of New York rap is flowing over a beat made out of ""New York, New York."

Sounds badass to me.

I've been fairly obsessed with the Bomb Squad lately. Other than Superfly, a few Roots albums and Sigur Ros, all I've been listening to is Bomb Squad-produced shit like old Public Enemy and Cube's AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted.

I'm not sure what else, if anything, they produced, but I'm going to do some research and find out.

Check your PM's

Way too much good music has come out lately, I haven't even been able to listen to all of it. The Roots, Raekwon's mixtape, Freddie Foxxx's mixtape, Cut Chemist, J5, Boot Camp Click, Gift of Gab's mixtape, Pack FM, Belief, Oh No, and a lot more. I've also heard good things about the Society of Invisibles album, but haven't downloaded it.

Couple that with the fact that I've been listening to a lot of non-hip-hop stuff as well, and I've got more music than time..

Oh yeah, Pharrell's album is horrible. Not that I necessarily expected much else, but wow... nearly every song sounds similar, and even Jay phoned in his verse. Poor.

Everybody should really buy that Roots album on August 29th though. It's easily one of the best albums of the year.

Not really a fan of his album, but his flow is nice for some reason. I guess it's just his tone and the way everything comes out is the reason that I like it ... but he suffers from Paul Wall Syndrome ... he's says the same thing in EVERY SONG. It just gets repetative listening to him talk about candy paint, screw, lean, syrup, purple, and all that other Houston slang. I mean, I know the rhyme scheme varies ... and others do the same thing ... but fuck - it's just tiresome sometimes.

:soapbox:

Invursion.. wanna hit me with that Saigon tape? He's a NY MC by the way bro, but I can see where you would've been thrown off since it's a DJ Drama mixtape.

And I definitely agree with you about Chamillionaire, but on the same token.. that's pretty much what I think of Young Jeezy as well. He's always got the same monotone flow, and all you ever hear him talk about is cocaine and living in the "trap". I'd even go as far as to call him one of the most overrated rappers out right now..

Spirit in Stone is one of my favorite albums, very good for a debut. In fact, it's pretty similar in quality to Same Shit, Different Day. Lotta dope beats and down to earth rhymes. The Quannum posse cut with DJ Shadow production is kind of lame, although I suppose it just didn't meet my high expectations. The rest of the album is great, especially "Hellohihey" and "Me"... Hell, I'll send the whole thing to you sometime.

I don't know who does the production, can't find my liner notes, but I think it's a tag team of Jumbo and DJ Rev Shines. Shines is a cool guy, I smoked him out once, and he has some good mixtapes out, if you can find them.

That album's fantastic. I wish Redman still came with that style, unfortunately he disappoints me more often than not these days.

I really, really like the new Boot Camp Click album, had to go pick it up today. Sure, it's not like the Duck Down glory days, but it's still better than most stuff that comes out these days. Some great production on there, but I would've liked more Beatminerz (only 1 track), and as much as I like him, 9th Wonder doesn't really suite their style.

Also picked up a used copy of The Root's Phrenology, which I haven't heard in a long while. Just awesome stuff, they've gotta be one of the, if not the, most consistent groups in hip-hop. "Water"

Also, it really pisses me off how hard it is to find BIG's Ready To Die these days. I still have the case and everything, but someone stole my disc long ago. Anyone heard this diss by Ludacris? Apparently he is just going hard at someone over a samplet that I just can't place. The beat just seems perfect and Luda flows on this shit like crazy. Like I said, I'm so into this southern rap thing right now and anything that I listen to just seems like more crack for my habit. Have a listen...

Reading up on some sites, Luda comes out and says that he isn't really dissing anyone in the song, instead he is going at himself. I don't know if I believe that or not, but the end result of this track is worth it never the less.

Those albums aren't all from 2000 on. In fact, I'm pretty sure only The Grey Album fits in that timeframe.

Edit: Wait, LWFC is 2000.

Those are all excellent albums, don't get me wrong. I own them all (well, I just have a copy of The Grey Album) and they all kick my ass.

Loved that Marshall Mathers LP. I still bump "Criminal" every now and then for some crazy reason.

This album dropped on 11/19/1999 ... so I guess this can count to.

Lord Willin' was a fantastic album. Probably not on most people's "Best of" lists, but it definately makes mine. Made The Neptunes' stock go way up in my book.

"Virginia" is my shit.

And yea, I had to check when 2001 dropped. Would've been on there if it was eligible.

Inv, was that song War With God by Luda?? Buck mentioned it the other day and said it was a T.I diss or summin.

I would put LWFC, Blueprint etc. on my list of 2000 onwards... wasn't The Fix in 2000 as well??

.invurzion.
July 21st, 2006, 7:47 PM
Yeah, it was "War With God." I really didn't think that it was towards T.I. though ... if it was - then I'm all for it. It might rekindle that fire that was on the end of "Stomp" from Youngbuck's "$traight Outta Cashville" album.

Luda: "So please stay of the T.I.P. of my diiiiiiiiiiiiiaaaaack..."

Thanks for the info. Here is that interview with Luda bout the song that I was reading: http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.4289

It was rumored to be a TI diss, but he never actually calls him out directly, so it's debatable.

And yeah, I meant the actual BIG disc... I've definitely got the album on mp3, but I like having a nice CD collection

Thanks to TRO for the link

1. Then & Now - Masta & GZA's kids have talent, but it would have been better to hear then rocking it alongside them. This beat is serious. 7.5/10

2. ENY House - I like the horn loop, but there should have been some change-up in the middle. Good track, short and to the point. 7/10

3. Brooklyn King - I dont mind the stripped-down beat, but there isnt enough going on here lyrically. I guess this could be called Digi-Warfare II. 6.5/10

4. Its What It Is - Love this track. Ghost and Rae contribute great verses, and the PF Cuttin beat is effective. 8.5/10

5. Nehanda & Cream - The talking at the start is unnecessary. The smooth beat provided by Bronze suits Masta perfectly. 7.5/10

6. Iron God Chamber - Wasnt digging this when I heard the snippet, but much like Radioactive off Iron Flag, this grew on me. Good to hear U-God back in form, and Meth kills it. 8/10

7. Pass the Bone Remix - MK's ode to smoking over a smooth Al Green sample. 7.5/10

8. Older Gods Pt. 2 - There is way too much talking on the track, and Pete Rock's beat sounds uninspired. Thankfully MK holds it down lyrically. 6.5/10

9. Lets Get Into Something - This is the same guy that sang on Love Spell, and I really wasnt looking forward to hearing him again. He has an alright voice, but he goes on for way too long. 5.5/10

10. Street Corner - Very lazy to pick the same beat that was on the Think Differently album, but I'd take these 3 MC's over the original 3 any day. One of Bronze's best beats, and I'm excited to hear if Deck can finally make that album he's capable of. 10/10

11. Ringing Bells - Bronze should have done the entire album. His style fits MK perfectly. 9/10

12. East MCs - 5 MCs over a nice beat, with Masta & Killa Sin having the best verses. Prodigal Sunn should have got on this instead of Free Murda. 8/10

13. Lovely Lady - Masta Xcitement? I dont listen to much reggae, but this is just bad. 2/10

It took Masta 10 years to drop No Said Date, and maybe he should have waited more than 2 years to make this album. This isnt a flop, but just when you get a few good tracks in a row, you get smacked with something lame. If NSD is his Cuban Linx, MIB is his Immobilarity. 7.5/10

On the other hand, BCC's The Last Stand is dope. I'm still relatively new to the Duck Down crew, but Louieville is by far the weakest member.

Damn, didn't expect to see you of all people not enjoying this... I'm loving it. I'm only on "Older Gods 2", but every track before this was dope. I could've done without the kids rhyming on track one, but the beat's nice. But yeah, that "Lovely Lady" is horrible.

I do agree that Bronze should've done more production. He's on fire right now, I haven't heard a bad, or even average, beat from that guy. He better do some joints on Raekwon's album, "Nehanda and Cream" is the kind of shit I want to hear him rapping on. Vatican 2 has some promising tracks.

And yeah, the BCC is good stuff, love the production on there. "He Gave His Life" is one of my favorite songs right now.

Alright, making a list of what albums I need to pick up in the next few months, yes I do actually buy the cd's, because it makes me feel better, and it's just something I do :-P

Anyway, the list currently:

Masta Killah - Made In Brooklyn
J-Dilla - The Shining
Lupe Fiasco - Food & Liquor
The Roots - Game Theory

Then there's three I've come across today just scanning, are they proper albums? Any previews?

Little Brother - Seperate But Equal
Inspectah Deck - Resident Patient
Jazze Pha & Cee-Lo - Happy Hour (Just love Cee-Lo)

Any thoughts?

3. Hold You Down - Alchemist Feat: Prodigy
4. The Best Form - Krondon
5. Off Top - Supernatural
6. I Wish You Would - Royce Da 5'9" & Canibus
7. Secret Wars - Last Emperor (Prince Paul Mix)
8. Fatal Mistake - Sly Boogy & Promoe (DJ Wicked Blend)
9. Metro Attitude - Masta Ace
10. Shook Ones Part 2 - Mobb Deep (DJ Wicked Blend)
11. If You Got Love - Non Phixion (Produced by Pete Rock)
12. Got it Like That - Abstract Rude
13. Hit Em' Off - Zion I feat: Triple Threat DJ's
14. Let Em' Have it - KRS One
15. License 2 Ill - Ill Bill & DJ JS1

I got bored once and bought a couple of Master P albums. I thought the liner notes were so friggin funny that I started collecting them. Let' see what I have off the top of my head:

3 Silkk Da Shocker albums
3 Mystikal albums (no limit stuff, not his jive records)
Mac - Shell Shocked
Mr. Serv-on - Da Next Level
both Snoop albums
Couple of C-murder albums
Charlie Hustle (AKA e-40 I believe)
Ghetto Commission (who do a great rap version of dead or alive by Bon Jovi)
Mr. Magic (had a couple of good tracks amongst all the crap)
Fiend
Mia X (god she was terrible)
Kane and Abel (who i gotta admit was one of the 2 or 3 best artists on NL)

i'm sure there's others, but by far my favorite NL album that I found for 3 bucks is the great LIL Soldiers

So Cut Chemist's album seems to be a bit more entertaining then the new J5 record. I'm digging Feedback, no doubt, but the guys don't have that energy of the other albums. Quality Control was the stand-out, 'look at us' record, Power In Bumbers was the mature record, so they're in line for a transitional release, but still a little disappointing.

Lots of producers have put out good albums recently. Oh No, Nicolay, Belief, Cut Chemist, DILLA, then DJ Shadow's upcoming album..

Speaking of Shadow, www.sumish.com has a nice mp3 of a song with Phonte from Little Brother. It's interesting to say the least, it's got a classic rock vibe, Shadow's album is looking promising, "hyphy" or not. Check it out.

Maybe I'll do a little write up in a little bit.

Dr. Octagon is coming up here in September, I believe. Probably will try and check that show out.

Also, in November, a Stones Throw 10 Year Anniversary concert with Madlib, Peanut Butter Wolf and Oh No, plus others. That show should be awesome.

1. Intro - It's an intro.

2. Wake Up - Sounds like it's produced by Eminem. Em does the chorus as well. I like the beat, rhymes are good, definately a good song. 8/10

3. Violent - Again sounds like Em produced. Decent beat. Familiar heat from Obie, I must also say I'm a huge fan of his first CD. I consider it a classic. This song gets a 7/10, just kind of a slow song for him saying he's violent.

4. Wanna Know - I could have sworn I've heard this song on a different beat. I hate to sound stupid but it sounds like the Doors for some reason, I have no clue who it is though. Crazy beat though I like it. 9/10

5. Lay Down - Again Em produced I think. Nice beat, Obie raps fast on this, I don't recall him ever rapping like this. It's nice, fresh. 8/10

6. Snitch feat. Akon - Akon is probably the only R&B singer I can stand to listen to. Definately a good song since I guess it's the lead single. Great song, good beat, good lyrics. 9/10

7. Cry Now - Great song, I love the beat, even though it has a sample in it. Obie kills it. 9/10

8. Ballad of Obie Trice - I love this song. The beat is great, lyrics are tight. That's all I can say on this one. Best song on the CD. 10/10

9. Jamacian Girl feat. Brick and Lace - Catchy song, will probably be on the radio. It's not horrible or anything but probably the worst song on the CD IMO. 6/10

10. Kill Me a Mutha - Awesome beat, I love it. Small Scarface sample at the beggining. And of course Obie kills it. 8/10

11. Out of State - Crazy guitarish beat, Obie rapping fast again. Chorus is kinda boring though. Decent song though. 7/10

12. All of My Life feat. Nate Dogg - How can you hate on a song featuring Nate Dogg. Definately a party song, beats good, Nate rips it. Obie kills it once again. Sounds like an old school West Coast party song. 9/10

13. Ghetto feat. Trey Songz - Sounds like it should be in a "Carmen" type of movie. Not great, not bad either. 6/10

14. There They Go feat. Eminem, Big Herc, Trick Trick - Great beat, great lyrics, new Eminem shit. Awesome song. Beats crazy, possibly produced by Em as well. 10/10

15. Mama feat. Trey Songz - I don't like this song too much, sounds like an 80's TV show beat. R&B'ish. I'd give it 6/10

16. 24's - Reminds me way too much of T.I. for some reason, whom I hate to death. Obie raps fast again. Probably one of the lesser songs, 6/10

17. Every Where I Go feat. 50 Cent - Sounds like Em produced as well. Not a bad beat. This really isn't much of a party CD. Thankfully 50 only does the chorus. 7/10

18. Obie Story - Artsy kinda song, good beat though. Obie talks about ghetto life. Not a bad song though 8/10

I'll check out the album, Obie's better than a lot of mainstream nonsense out today.

One part of your review I'm still not understanding, Myron... "Great song, I love the beat, even though it has a sample in it." :wtf: :wtf:

I think Papoose is highly overrated myself. He has his moments, but he doesn't deserve all the hype he's been getting (mostly due to DJ Kay Slay's overexposure). He's not versatile at all, and I have doubts that he can make a quality album.

One up-and-coming New Yorker that does spark my interest is Saigon. Like Pap, I've gotta wonder how he'll come off on a full length album, but he's made it a habit of dropping quality mixtape stuff. The guy's flow is insane, if he can just decide whether he wants to go the conscious or gangster route, he's got the skills to be one of the most talked about NY MC's.

Yeah, I never saw all the hype in Papoose. He is better than some shit like Rick Ross, Young Joc, or whatever else is the hot thing right now, and I could understand if he was respected on that sort of level. But I've seen shit on other forums where idiots have compared him to Big L, even Rakim... that's just ridiculous. Papoose hasn't put out an album, and when he does I'm betting it'll be very mediocre. We'll see, he could prove me wrong... but with Just Blaze backing Saigon, he looks like he's going to be the NY debut of the year.

Onto bigger and better shit, I love old Boot Camp shit. Black Moon, Smif-N-Wesson, Heltah Skeltah, and OGC's debut's are all classic material as far as I'm concerned. Is there a better smoking song than Black Moon's "Shit Iz Real"? I think not..

Check out each of these albums if you haven't. These guys could've been on a Wu-Tang level, but they fell off hard and no one seemed to care when they came back with quality stuff. Similar to Wu, nothing beats the original debuts.

And this isn't an actual retail album ... it's just a mixtape with KaySlay. And I have to agree with Buck on this - although I do like some of the tracks that Papoose has come out with (his verse on the "Touch It" remix with Busta was the best out of the whole bunch...) I'm really not sold on him. He is too one-dimesional and will NEVER live up to the hype that Kay Slay has put on him.

And agreeing with another point, Saigon is leagues above Pap without the hype. Check back a couple of pages for a Saigon mixtape that I put a link up for...

Obviously, Buck Marley you have no intelligence with what you said about Papoose not being versatile. That's the most assinine, retarded thing I have ever read about him in my life. You doubt that he can make a quality album? ahahahaha you crack me up. It is most certainly evident that you have no knowledge on the topic of which you speak.

If you actually took the time to listen to any one of his fifteen mixtapes you would realize that there is no hype just talent. Not versatile? That is laughable. That's why he can rip any beat he is given, drop knowledge constantly with an extraordinary vocabulary, gaining a chic fanbase while still keeping it raw, he has excellent punchlines, for example:
"I'm like an air conditioner, I'll make you lose your fans." - Papoose on You Ain't Nice, Moment of Silence mixtape.

He can keep it g while keeping a message going such as: "Next time you hear the tunderstorm feel the wind/ They say thats when the sky opens up to the let the dead people in//" - Papoose on Return of the Living Dead, A Bootleggers Nightmare mixtape

He is constantly played in the city, and he has the whole city backing him. You're obviously a hater or you just hate to see somebody with talent succeed, more than I can say for your shitty Boot Camp you guys dick ride on.

There is a reason that labels are offering him bigger deals than 50 Cent's first deal on Shady/Aftermath, and 15 mixtapes strong should shut your mouth, but you're a hater and you'll keep hating until the day you die. For more Papoose quotables you can hit me up on AIM at PurpleHaze420365, or just wait for me to join this wonderful board you guys have. Thanks for all of your time, sincerely, J.

What Chess was is something that the other guy said that Papoose doesn't have which is versatility. ::Writes versatility on the chalk board::

: Now if you could flip to the V section of your dictionary please.

ver·sa·tile ( P ) Pronunciation Key (vûrs-tl, -tl)
adj.
Capable of doing many things competently.
Having varied uses or serving many functions: “The most versatile of vegetables is the tomato” (Craig Claiborne).
Variable or inconstant; changeable: a versatile temperament.
Biology. Capable of moving freely in all directions, as the antenna of an insect, the toe of an owl, or the loosely attached anther of a flower.

I guess you can say Pap is similar to a chamillion because there is not a style that he can't adapt to. He doesn't just give you the one side of things, he gives you both. I would recommend listening to all three parts of Law Library before you come to me with that mess.

Sure, 1.5 wasn't his best offering but there were some good songs such as On Site Beef, The Influentials etc. I think you guys just don't understand what he's trying to do here...

That's the funniest part of your post... I'm not even going to get into that, your defense of Papoose was poor. Boot Camp is shitty? If you knew anything about hip-hop, you'd know they had New York going crazy over a decade before Papoose was mentioned by anybody. But hey, what do I know?

Yeah, I said not versatile. Like I said, he has his moments, but usually he's coming out with the whole "I'm better than you, check out my cool similies" bullshit that every other New York/east coast rapper loves. Reminds me a lot of Lloyd Banks, someone who couldn't deliver when the time came to make an album.

I actually thought "Chess" was one of his better songs Merv. And yeah, Boot Camp was supposed to come my way on August 15th, now the date is just gone from their website and from the venu's list. Shitty.

Sure, he does have MUCH better quotables, but why bother showing them to a board full of blind mainstream heads? Fuck that, Mainstream shit is trash and finally Papoose is getting some exposure to take rap back to where it needs to be.

Now personally, I don't think that BCC is shitty at all, but me saying it served it's purpose. You noticed what I had to say by me taking a shot at a group you obviously are a huge fan of. Again for clarification, BCC is the shit.

Why shouldn't Pap be proud of possessing a knowledge that most lack? Not many can break it down on Pap's level, and honestly the kid is running NYC right now, he has more tracks than most of your favorite rappers. 285 I believe. All straight piff.

You're comparing Banks to Pap, come on now homie. That's just dumb as shit, Pap is way above where Banks can ever reach. 15 straight fire mixtapes speaks volumes, but there will always be haters. Pap will deliver, you can say he took the 50 Cent method kind of. Took all of the songs that were too hot for a mixtape and is putting it on an album.

Just the production on his album should shut you doubters up, 4 beats from Dre, a beat from Alchemist, one from Timbaland, another from DJ Premier. . . and that says nothing to you? Dre just don't do work for anybody, especially with somebody that he doesn't have affiliation with as far as public relations is concerned.

Dipset is consistently played here as well and I understand your point. But since when has a mixtape artist gotten such buzz? Since when has an unsigned up and coming artist jumped on the hottest remix of the year (Billboard wise) without even being signed?

And if I memory serves me correctly, you said that you preferred Saigon's work to Pap's but I find that hilarious. For this reason: Every Saigon mixtapes (Except his first offering) has featured AT LEAST 50% old work. That tells me he's hungry. . . You also said that Pap will never ever ever be on L's level, this I agree with. L was possibly the best to ever live, case closed.

And to whatever ignoramist who babbles that Pap is a nobody, just look at the rappers he has worked with. . . Mike Jones (Yeah I hate him too), Paul Wall, Nas, Common, Talib Kweli, Jadakiss, Styles P, the list goes on and on. And it's not because of Slay's massive connections in the industry, Talib Kweli WANTED to have Pap on his album, Common WANTED to do a track with Pap, because now everybody sees his vision.

When he is running the rap game in '07, lets see who's opinions change on this matter, and lets see how many of those rappers you still say he couldn't "hold a candle to."

50 Cent is the most talented rapper out there? Lmfao, you're a joke my friend. Do you know why Busta Rhymes decided to work out a joint venture with Kay Slay and Pap?

Because his man at the mixtape store told him Pap's mixtapes were the top selling mixtapes the past eight months in a row. People don't want to hear his music?. . .

Do you live in the burbs? 50 is the dopest MC on the planet, ahahahahhahahaha that's laughable. The Massacre was a mess, GROTD was classic though. Pap can be considered mainstream seeing as he was on the Touch It Remix, Crowded with Jeannie Ortega, got another video coming out with Shaq and Bun B. . . come on now.

Pap has got the hood on his back and it's either you can't stand to see somebody who has true and unadulterated talent succeed, or you're just blinded to the fact that if it wasn't for the underground there would be no rappers. . .

Sure, he does have MUCH better quotables, but why bother showing them to a board full of blind mainstream heads? Fuck that, Mainstream shit is trash and finally Papoose is getting some exposure to take rap back to where it needs to be.

What exactly are you talking about? Most of the people that post regularly in this thread don't listen to mainstream hip-hop. Have you even read any of it, or you're just making blind assumptions again? And, Papoose isn't exactly the most underground emcee in the game, so I'm not understand your whole anti-mainstream attitude. Pap has got the hood on his back and it's either you can't stand to see somebody who has true and unadulterated talent succeed, or you're just blinded to the fact that if it wasn't for the underground there would be no rappers. . .

Or just one of the type who think that unless your on the radio, you're ass which is a fucked up way to think of things because since when has exposure meant a fucking thing?

So let's flip the script here and say that Eminem was trash when he was underground because you haven't heard his shit. GTFO here wit that mess.Exposure meant something when Fuck Tha Police came out.

What do you think "Underground" is? That is because of lack of exposure, in most cases.

Pap has the hood on his back? Along with the other 2348205 MCs from NY that say the same exact thing. Maybe like an apartment, a few rats, and some ghetto children on his back, but not whole hood. C'mon now.

Maybe you should understand that not everyone likes the same thing. You like eating shit, that doesn't mean I will, shiteater.

What I hate the mainstream for is that everything is a carbon copy of what has already been done. At least Pap keeps it original, you gotta give him that.

Yet you're a Young Buck fan? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense...

And no, Papoose doesn't really keep it original, at all. There's very little that sets him apart from every other young mixtape MC, except maybe some better-than-average wordplay skills. Nothing to do with originality... his subject matter could easily be confused with just about every other rapper in New York.

On to bigger and better things...

Pete Rock and CL Smooth's The Main Ingredient has been getting crazy rotation from me. My computer's having problems, so I've been relying on the good ol' CD's... picked up The Main Ingredient, Common's LWFC, and Guru's Jazzmatazz used for $20. Not bad.

I was pretty disappointed with "Deja Vu", and I love Jay. I dunno, maybe I was expecting too much after "Crazy In Love" (He KILLS it...), but I just wasn't feeling it at all. Same for his verse on the Pharrell CD, very mediocre..

Matthew
July 31st, 2006, 8:37 PM
I haven't heard that Pharrell album yet, don't think I will either, sans that Jay Z collabo.

I still think he can put out an album and probably have it in top ten hip hop albums of that year. Steady average Jay would still elite when it comes to mainstream hip hop.

You don't listen to "mainstream" rap because it is a carbon copy of things that have already been done? Yet you are a Buck and EMINEM fan. Now, don't get me wrong, because I'm the last person to bash someone who likes mainstream because I'm the worst. I'm STILL bumping my Yung Joc album at the moment. ("Do Ya Bad" is officially my theme song at the moment. :D) But come on dude - there are three things to notice about your post and those two artists...

Mainstream:

Commercial:

Hypocritical:

Now enough of this bullshit ... get to some real discussion please.

That Pharrell CD is nothing but ashtray material. A lot of it are the singles that he's had out over the past 4-6 months just placed on a CD with some other crossover R&B/Rap collaborations. I mean, the production is decent, but nothing praiseworthy content wise.

Oh ... and since I'm a confessed southern rap addict at the moment, if anyone wants that crack that is Rick Ross' Port of Miami album ... get at me.

I was a huge DMX fan for the first 3 albums, but his last 2 were not up to par. I'm eager to hear this new album. His TV show is full of unintentional humor.

So, Lollapalooza this past weekend put in Chicago; fun, fun time.

Friday afternoon I checked out this tight artist named Ohmega Watts. Kind of in the same vein as modern-day Common or Talib Kweli, but not exactly on their level. Not yet, at least. He had a local duo called 1773 out there with him(white dude and a black dude), who were just as good. I definitely reccomend checking out their shit if you're looking for some new artists. All of them are on MySpace.

Friday night I headed out to the House of Blues for the first day's after party, where Blackalicious and Lyrics Born were doing a gig. Both were playing Lolla, but the scheduling was conflicting with other bands I wanted to see so I decided to see them on their own in order to free up that festival time. Plus, I assume they'll be a hell of a lot better in a smaller venue where they're sharing the bill with 30 other artists.

And I was right, in so many words. Ohmega Watts and 1773 came out and opened up for them, and killed it. Then Lyrics Born hits the stage with a three piece funk band and proceedes to tear shit down. Awesome performance, though he kind of rode the whole 'Chicago, make some noise' shit into the ground. After each song he'd go on for minutes about being there to party and how he knew we could get louder, etc. Fucking alright already....

Then Blackalicious came on. Ya had Gift of Gab and Chief Xcel, of course, plus two backing vocalists and this crazy white boy keyboard player. I was a bit disappointed with the set, simply because GOG's flow on some of the songs doesn't meet the albums standards, which is perfectly acceptable, but during the fast paced sections, he just seemed to start mumbling real fast and you couldn't understand him. Still a great show though. Gab did two freestyles, which were tight. Really good show, all in all.

Second day of the festival had Gnarls Barkley, who were amazing(though not really hip hop, so I'll leave it at that); Common(who I skipped to go see the Flaming Lips), and Kanye West as on of the headline acts. Now, this was Kanye's homecoming. 60,000 people at this festival, in his home town... It was a big night for him...

And he went on 20 minutes late because of equipment problems. Then it finally starts, with the string section playing the theme from Diamonds Are Forever. The crowd goes nuts. Kanye walks out to center stage, draped in pruple light, grabs the mic and we kick things off with 'Diamonds From Sierra Leone...'

And his mic is too low and we can't hear him. So he runs to the corner of the stage where they have a stationary mic set up and yells so we can all hear him. He runs from side to side doing this for the duration of the song. He finally hits center stage again, looks off to the production team on the side and yells 'turn my fucking sound up! We're in my town and you're messing with my sound!?' The crowd erupted. He kept trucking, though. A few times he left the stage, which left the DJ to just mess around or for one of his back-up singers to dance around.

Finally we get into a flow, and we get 'Get 'Em High' with Common, which rocked. We get 'Spaceship' and 'Drive Slow' with GLC. We get Lupe Fiasco riding out on a skateboard and performing 'Kick Push.' We get 'Slow Jamz' and 'Over Night Celeb' and 'Impossible' with Twista. And in the middle of all of this, we get Diva Kanye, as he publically displays his dissatisfaction with the production problems, telling his General Manager, who was at stage left, that 'there are gonna be some changes made, oh yeah.'

Overall, it was a great, great weekend, with some great, great hip hop sets.

What are you guys thinking of the new Shadow album? The hyphy tracks are definitely an acquired taste, and I was disappointed with the Q-Tip/Lateef track, but I don't think it's nearly as bad as some people are saying. "Backstage Girl" with Phonte is doooope, and the instrumentals like "This Time" are really good as well... "Triplicate" is vintage Shadow. I'd say about half of it is great music and the other half of it is well done, but strictly for the "hyphy" crowd.

Where was Tonedeff?

Edit: Shit, he was part of the Last Band Standing stuff and had a solo show that night. Didn't get there until the day after that.

New Meth, Rae & RZA is up on www.xxlmag.com. Sounds like something straight from the Tical album.

Yeah, that Meth is a banger. Can't wait for a CD quality version, album's looking good at this point.

DJ Premier absolutely LACED Christina Aguilera on her new album. I'd love to hear some good rappers over "Back In The Day", "Still Dirrty", and other tracks on there.

Yet again, the NBA 2K soundtrack is filled with dope underground rap. This year's is even sounding better than last year's. Production by Dan The Automator, tracks from Rhymefest, Hieroglyphics, Aceylone, Ghostface, AG, Lupe Fiasco, Dilated Peoples, Mos Def, Charli 2na, ATCQ, and Zion I. That lineup alone is crazy, then there's cuts from Slim Thug, E-40, and Fabolous to appeal to the more mainstream crowd.

Is there a better Raekwon song than "Heaven & Hell"? Let me know because I'm on the verge of over-playing this song.

Yea, that's a great track. Rae and Ghost goin back and forth like only they can. There's so many classics on that album though.... it's hard to pick the best.

So I've got a friend from Conneticut told me about the time he got lost in the neighbourhood where Biggie grew up... I decided to listen to Life After Death again, forgot how much I loved this shit.

Somebody Got to Die, Let the gun shots blow!

That's about all I have to contribute.

Hell yea, that's always a great album to go back to after a few years of non-listening.

I'm still hooked on this Raekwon shit though. I like him more than Ghostface to be honest...

Yeah, but you haven't heard Immobilarity and The Lex Diamond Story... those will change your mind pretty quickly, I'd think.

If you've only heard "Heaven and Hell", you definitely need to get your hands on the full album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. It's one of the best rap CD's ever...

Anyone else heard the rumor (it's pretty much confirmed at this point) that Jeezy's going to have a guest spot on Cuban Linx 2? I understand they want to boost sales, especially now that it's under the Aftermath umbrella, and there's the whole cocaine connection between Jeez and Rae -- but what the fuck? One of New York's most lyrical MC's with one of the most overrated gimmick rappers from the south? Ugh..

You can't expect Rae (being the intelligent dude that he is) to really pass up on a collabo with one of the most popular, although gimmicky, rappers in the industry right now, do you.

I mean, although some don't like it, that down south shit is really selling and popular as hell. Just putting Jeezy's name on certain things draws interest. I know from personal experience down here that most people could care less about Raekwon. Honestly. I know there are a lot of people who don't even know how he is period. And that is the majority of commercial consumers too. But Jeezy is a well-known artist at the moment. WELL known honestly.

Raekwon is just capilalizing on what is popular right now to get that guac, and you know that it's just going to be a commercial single anyway. The rest of the album is going to be fucking bananas ...

Yeah, I know they want to boost sales, but this is Cuban Linx 2, the follow-up to one of the greatest rap albums ever. Why feature an artist who will fade away into obscurity ten years from now?

Of course the mainstream is going to be more familair with Jeezy than Raekwon, when was the last time Raekwon had a video on MTV or BET? That said, Cuban Linx isn't a mainstream album, so it shouldn't be catering to the mainstream. Anyone who doesn't know who the Wu-Tang Clan is isn't a very big fan of rap, and shouldn't be the target audience for this album whatsoever.

I don't mind Raekwon getting his due, but this isn't the way to go about it. Look at his last attempts at commercial success, they were far from what people wanted to hear, and there's a reason you never hear his last two albums talked about. They absolutely butchered the classic "Ice Cream" on his last album, a song so bad they didn't even make it a single. I know the Jeezy track is one song out of many, but it's not a good bit of news for an album that again, is the sequel to one of the best albums ever.

The whole thing with Wu-Tang is that their fans don't expect them to capitalize on what's popular and feed into the trends. Wu came through the gate with creativity like no other, and the lack of creativity is what made a lot of the later releases disappointing. That's always been their downfall, and I'm hoping Cuban Linx 2 doesn't fall victim to this agenda..

Well said, Buck. I for one am not too excited about this album. Rae's recent verses haven't really impressed me - seems like his lyrical skills and passion on the mic have both significantly declined in recent years. Add that to the fact that it's on Aftermath (:grumpy:), Busta is the executive producer (I like Busta but The Big Bang was weak), and there's gonna be non-Wu guest spots from Jeezy of all people... to me that says there's no way in hell this is gonna be a classic or even remotely close to the quality of the original. I expect it to be solid, but am not exactly dying to hear it.

About Cuban Linx, I do have it but the only songs I really play over and over are Heaven & Hell and Criminology. It's an all around good album though. This new album from Raekwon sounds interesting, I hope there are a lot of Wu-Tang collaborations and not just popular shit. If someone like Paul Wall ends up on that CD, I won't bother buying it.

If Rae wanted to keep the whole cocaine connection thing, why couldnt he work with someone like Scarface? Sure he's not as popular as Jeezy, but I doubt they selected Nas to appear on the first Cuban Linx because of his popularity and not his skill.

Partial review of Method Man - 4:21

Things They Say (prod. Erick Sermon) - I love how they flipped the Lauryn sample, and Meth lets all his aggression towards the media out. 8/10

Presidential MC (prod. RZA) - Dark shit straight from 1994. This is the style of rap that was missing from Tical 0. 8.5/10

Is It Me? (prod. Scott Storch) - I'm not a big fan of Storch, but the piano on this beat is awesome. From the snippet I heard, Meth sounds fully focused. 8/10

Ya'Mean (prod. Chairman of the Boards) - Not feeling the beat too much, and Fat Joe's flow is terrible on this track. Meth and Styles P pick up his slack. 6.5/10

Fall Out (prod. Kwame) - Awful beat. Not sure what Meth was thinking with this one. Sounds like a Prequel left-over. 4/10

So far, this album is a mixed bag. When its good, its great, but beat selection is still a problem. I'm still curious to hear the rest of this, with beats by Mathematics, Havoc, Sermon & RZA, plus guest spots by ODB, Deck, Street Life & Carlton Fisk.

I just heard Presidential MC on the new Meth album...

the only problem is his delivery...he's still using the same delivery he started using on the Tical 2000 album....

his old delivery was dope....the new one is not meth...

I still liked the track, though...

RZA on it and RZA produced is a plus....

Haven't listened yet, but from the tracklist I can only assume it's better than the new Outkast..
