Christ, NBC is what got me into Soilwork in the first place!
And I only really listened to it cause Devy produced it and I knew that he couldn't put his name to any project or band without himself thinking it was worthy of it and that he could actually do something to it.
After listening to the older albums though, you can tell that the same elements are there, but he just managed to bring them to light a little more, figure number five just carried that on, even thought they had a different producer.
In other bullshit, did any of you Oz guys hear the "screaming contest" on JJJ last night?
The whole time I was listening to it, and the other DJ's recommendations, I couldn't help but think that the scream Devy does at the end of "The Death Of Music" on Ocean Machine would blow all the shit they played away!
What do you guys reckon?
Best scream you've heard in a music track?
Doesn't just have to be blood curdling scream either, caqn actual have some lyrical content, or someone revving up a crowd etc....

That scream is quite insane.
Has anyone heard of Red Harvest. Sounds like they're doing to black metal what Fear Factory did for death metal in the 90's.

Absolutely. Those screams are ridiculously good!
If anyone has heard 'Cocaine' by Frankenbok live on the G&S Special Edition he lets loose this wailing scream. I swear he must have shit himself. Or passed a stone through his urethra.

I'd say the regulars in this great thread would agree with Burnzy. We're all more into underground and cult scenes.
Spineshank do not fall into any of these categories. They were never really a strong band with much longetivity. Frankly, they're treading water.

That's what is wrong with this forum. You have a different view to the majority of the posters, and suddenly you 'suck' and your tastes are flawed. What ever happened to being an individual? Just because people listen to a totally different brand of music, and appreciate other bands to you, doesn't mean they don't know anything about music, or that their tastes are horrible.

From the Rajah main page news-
"Chris Jericho met with legendary music manger Bruce Allen and Metallic producer Bob Rock prior to RAW in Vancouver a couple of weeks ago to talk about a Fozzy record with a possible wider release."
And this 'cause I thought it was interesting-
"IRON MAIDEN guitarist Adrian Smith told San Antonio Express-News that the band would only be performing one new song during their set at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Selma, Texas on Friday (August 15). The group's new CD, "Dance Of Death", hits the streets September 9 through Columbia Records.
"That's the problem. The album won't be released until next month, so we're playing all our old stuff," Smith said during a tour break. "The new song, 'Wildest Dreams', fits in really great with all the other stuff."
He added that "Wildest Dreams" (Windows Media) is "in the tradition of 'Run to the Hills' and 'Number of the Beast'. It is a short and sharp kind of song. It is about, ah, someone who is breaking out, looking for some freedom. It is a very simple song."
"Dance of Death" features 11 songs, recorded last November and December.
"The album is a progression from where we left off with 'Brave New World'," he said. "The last three, four years, the three-guitar lineup has really worked for us. I think we came up with a more cohesive album than before, and overall the material is stronger than 'Brave New World'.
"We recorded it in London, which we haven't done since 'Number of the Beast'."
And why not?
"Well, we did three albums in the Bahamas. Various reasons really. The vibe, the taxes, you know. But we wanted to do this album, and it was nice to go home."
When asked how much longer he will keep up with IRON MAIDEN, Smith said, "I been doing this for more than 20 years and I think I still have a few more miles in me. But I don't think I can keep on another 10 years." Read more."
And it's kinda old news, but are any Aussies planning to go to Metal For The Brain this year?

It's probably since Spineshank aren't overly creative and original.
That'd be the reason people abuse them.
Can't think of any other reasons.
MFTB is back on? Really? I guess I'll have to check the date and the lineup and make a decision. See if I can drag my brother along also.
As for Fozzy, a wider appeal? You mean a more updated appeal. It'll never work. Fozzy's greatness is their work with the old school. Talking with Rock is futile since they already have one of the greatest producers working for them in Andy Sneap.

I'm not focussing on that issue. All i'm saying, is just because someone likes a band, people immediately think their tastes are fucked and their opinions mean jack shit. It happens all to regulary around here.

We're not in some clique. In fact I think this thread has a good community vibe about it where we talk about what we're listening to and share opinions and make reccomendations to each other. That's what's good about this thread.
At least in here if someone doesnt like a band we contructively state why we don't like it. I think the general MDT thread is above the 'you suck and my shit is better than yours' stuff which happens elsewhere in this forum.
I just got the Slayer dvd, 'War at the Warfield'. Fuck it's intense. The 'Fans Rule' doco is pretty funny. The people in it are what give metalheads bad names. Lacking the ability to convey opinion and thought through the English language so they compensate with spluttering some juvenile shit with the word 'fuck' thrown about way too much to the point where they sound unintelligible. The usual 'Christianity sucks! This society sucks! I hate the world!'. Without this society they wouldnt have the freedom to go out and spend their dole money on tickets to Slayer gigs.
Also picked up 'Sick Transit Gloria Mundi' by Red Harvest. Fuck they're good. I've heard the description of 'Emperor, Godflesh, Ministry, Fear Factory all rolled into one', accurate! It's awesome.

I posted these 'cause I thought they were interesting-
"METALLICA's "performance coach" Phil Towle, a 64-year-old former psychotherapist who was brought into the picture in January 2001 to help James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett and Lars Ulrich repair their relationship with Jason Newsted, recently spoke to Classic Rock magazine about his work with the group to help them connect to each other, to their loved ones, and to themselves.
When asked why he urged Lars Ulrich to have a sit-down with former METALLICA guitarist Dave Mustaine in 2001, Towle said, "We went through a time in our lives where we realized there were certain things unfinished. For example, the Jason thing still remains, in my mind, unfinished. It doesn't necessitate a sit-down with Jason. I certainly recommend it, and I've attempted to do that, but it hasn't met with everybody's approval and the timing has been a little bit off.
"There was healing that needed to be done with [late METALLICA bassist] Cliff Burton in using psycho drama role-playing. We didn't do it, but it was done in James' rehab process. The band never said goodbye or grieved appropriately over the loss of Cliff. They just ploughed on like they've always done, sweeping things under the rug. Not out of spite or out of willful negligence, but just because they had a job to do. So much of they've learned is that past undone and unfinished contaminates the present.
"There was healing done as regards to Cliff. There's a desire to heal some things with Jason. And that brought up the whole thing with Mustaine. It seemed like a good thing to do for Lars, and it would've been also for James, but he wasn't around at that particular time [since he was in rehab].
"So I encouraged that, because it frees up people to go forward and it teaches a responsibility for bringing things to closure. In my former life as a psychotherapist, so many times when people had trouble letting go of relationships that were over, the 'divorces' weren't really finalized or finished in a productive way. It just doesn't work well that way in life, it's important to complete. I was present for the meeting of Dave and Lars, and I thought it was very useful and very productive. It helped both of them."
In response to a question about whether they were screaming at each other during the meeting, Phil said, "No. Dave is a very sensitive guy, and Lars is too. They were both grateful for the opportunity to talk with each other. It didn't mean it was totally resolved, and there were other issues that still remain, I think, that could've been talked about some more. But at least they've got some of those things out on the table and walked away from that meeting caring more of their long-standing love and respect for each other than resentments has perhaps poisoned their perspective of each other."
"JUDAS PRIEST frontman Rob Halford, who recently rejoined the group after more than 12 years apart, revealed during an online chat Saturday (August 16) that the songwriting process for PRIEST's next studio album has already begun. "We are writing now, slowly bit by bit putting the pieces together," he said. "All I can see is the bar is higher and we will sail over it! It's all ready to go — my work room is awash in paper! All I can say is that all the things you have come to expect from PRIEST will be in the new songs... It's been cool getting the same feelings for songs like I did before. I thought that might be over — it's not."
When asked if he would be willing to sing, on PRIEST's upcoming tour, any of the songs written and recorded during the years when the band were fronted by Halford's replacement, Tim "Ripper" Owens, Rob said, "I will sing any song by PRIEST [including those from the Ripper era], period."
In a separate chat with Halford manager John Baxter, also conducted on Saturday, Baxter once again discussed the reasons for the relatively poor commercial performance of HALFORD's last studio offering, "Crucible", and the lack of touring in support of it.
"Sanctuary [Records, HALFORD's label] were not there for the band," John said. "They were more focused on breaking the band up and trying to reunite JUDAS PRIEST. [HALFORD's 2000 album] 'Resurrection' and the tour went very well. I worked to make sure of it. When I took over last fall, the label decided it would dump the band at the curb. That was the difference. They frustrated every move they could. That's why I stepped in when Rob threatened to retire in the summer of 2002. 'Crucible' had everything we needed promotion-wise, but again, folks were more into breaking the band up in the summer of 2002.
" 'Crucible' is a masterpiece," Baxter continued. "All the HALFORD records are masterpieces. The band members, Pat [Lachman] and Ray [Riendeau] included, will always be proud of the work we did that last four years... 'Crucible' tested very high at radio, etc. We knew we had a great release. The label [Metal-Is, a division of Sanctuary] didn't know what they had. They'd only been in business for two to three years. Fact is, the band needed money and love from a label for it to really have a chance."
With regards to Rob's reunion with JUDAS PRIEST, Baxter said, "It's all Rob wanted. It was tough to park the HALFORD band, but in this biz you always do what your artist seriously wants. Rob wanted to be back in JUDAS PRIEST. We could have produced another great HALFORD recording this or next year, but Rob wanted to return to PRIEST — JUDAS PRIEST was more important to Rob. [Repairing the relationships in the band was] what took them the most time to sort through. It's between four brothers and no one else. He loves his solo band, but at this point in his life he wanted to be a part of JUDAS PRIEST. I don't live in his body or mind, but that is what he desperately wanted."
During the same chat, Baxter revealed plans for HALFORD to release two DVDs in 2004, with both the "Resurrection" and "Crucible" eras of the groups extensively represented.
"The first DVD will encompass the making of 'Resurrection', 'Live Insurrection' and the 2000/2001 tour, with 'Rock in Rio III' being the main performance footage," he said. "The second video will encompass the making of 'Crucible', interviews, live performances from Europe, Japan and the Anaheim June 2003 performance."
With regards to the possibility of releasing a DVD containing videos from Halford's FIGHT and TWO years, Baxter said, "Rob and I have been talking that through. There is no reason to mix the HALFORD and FIGHT material/footage. We'll create a separate package for the FIGHT years. I feel the FIGHT material warrants some attention. There isn't much TWO material. That was a very experimental move by Rob."

even though I've always loved metal, and its sound in general, I've never really heard much "real" metal, and for that reason I've never owned many CDs of said metal bands.
So, in an attempt to fully broaden my truly eclectic musical tastes, Nimmers has been plying me with newer metal CDs, and back catalogs from some truly great metal bands, God bless his soul :)
So I thought I'd put up what I think of some of the stuff he's been "easing me into" as he put it the other day when I went over to pick up a new batch of sounds :)
On the menu this week are:
Tomahawk - Tomahawk
Tomahawk - Mit Gas
Poison The Well - You Come Before You
Opeth - Deliverence
In Flames - Colony
Children Of Bodom - Something Wild
So far I've sat down and seriously listened to Poison The Well, Opeth, In Flames and Children Of Bodom.
I must say, I love them all. Some great sounding metal, all of which fits the majority of my prerequisites in each case.
Yes Nimmers, even In Flames. I'm much more at peace with a studio recording than that poor excuse for a live album :p

ICED EARTH Set Release Date For 'The Glorious Burden' - Aug. 21, 2003
ICED EARTH have set an October 27 European release date through SPV Records for their new CD, "The Glorious Burden". The follow-up to 2001's "The Horror Show" will mark the recording debut with the group of new vocalist Tim Owens, formerly of JUDAS PRIEST. A world tour in support of the album is expected to begin in early 2004.
Also Ripper has joined IE, it's official.
Also apparently the new Nevermore it's not a production problem, it's an EQ problem. So One of the kids on the Nevermore boards, found one way to solve the EQ problem plaguing EoR.
You need a program called Cool Edit Pro 2.0. That can be downloaded. I have cakewalk so i used the cool edit pro and the cakwalk/sonar eq to stabalize the sound, therefore taking the "blanket" off the sound as mentioned alot of times on my old thread. I used sonar to do other things to the sound, but I found that using Cool Edit Pro can work almost as good. If you dont have cakewalk/sonar all you do is this. Rip your "purchased" copy of EoR to your computer into mp3's (use cdex for this) once you have that done you then open up Cool Edit Pro. Then you click on "open file" and search for the mp3's you just ripped. Select the mp3 (one at a time) and open it. If you got this far the rest is easy. Then it will import it. Next click on "effects" then "filters" then "graphic equalizer". You can mess around with that yourself or you can simply choose the "30 Band Punch and Sparkle" preset and preview it if you want, and click on ok when you are done. It will then re-equalize the mp3. As for Iron Maiden, well for some totally fucked up reason which no-one can understand, they're getting airplay on Triple M down here. Triple M is a pop-rock mainstream station which generally plays the likes of Linkin Park, Staind (heaviest they usually go) and all those rock acts like Creed, Nickleback and those cretins.
But strangely Wildest Dreams was play at about 1o:30 on Tuesday night. Plus there are sources saying Maiden will tour Oz next year. Plus it was said on Triple J on Tuesday.
Sounds good for things in Australia.

Speaking of Helmet,I found this on Blabbermouth-
"Contrary to published reports, HELMET have no plans at present to reunite for a tour in conjunction with a retrospective of the group's three studio albums for Interscope, due on November 4 through Universal Records.
A management spokesperson for HELMET frontman Page Hamilton told Billboard.com that he was unsure how the rumor began, but confirmed that Hamilton is working on a new project with late-period HELMET guitarist Chris Traynor, among others. The two musicians recently played together on tracks intended for BUSH frontman Gavin Rossdale's solo debut.
According to the spokesperson, Hamilton is no longer pursuing his band GANDHI, which featured former WHITE ZOMBIE drummer John Tempesta and ROB ZOMBIE bassist Rob Nicholson.
Hamilton is currently unsigned, a fact that he found mildly irritating in light of the band's widespread influence among today's up-and-coming rock acts.
"They're more reluctant to sign someone who's 40 years old and known for this certain thing," Hamilton told Billboard.com in January. "'We think you're the greatest. We respect you so much, but how do we market this?' you go see a band and they're playing a riff I wrote 10 years ago and they have a wallet chain and a load in their pants and they'll get signed."

Talking about nothing I found this on Infernal Combusion.
As the American northeast recovers from last week's massive power outage, during which an estimated 60 million people – from New York to Detroit to Toronto – were left in the dark, power metal legends Manowar have issued a statement claiming responsibility for the massive blackout.
“First of all, consider this not an Apology, for Kings of Metal grovel before no one,” the statement – credited to bassist and founding member Joey DeMaio – begins. “However, Manowar wishes to acknowledge to the world their role in the Surge of Electrical Power that, much like our vaunted music, rocked the world last week. Though it was not our intention to disrupt the lives of millions of Poseurs, we consider it a Testament to Heavy Metal Might and Thunder that one power chord from our steeled hands could wreak such havoc in the lives of mortals.”
According to DeMaio, guitarist Karl Logan was tuning before a rehearsal at the band's upstate New York studio, and his striking of a “particularly bitchin' and typically intense” power chord coincided with the moment the lights went out for millions of people.
“Real Men Play On Ten, and always have,” Logan comments. “As I am already the fastest, loudest, and most determined heavy metal guitarist on this or any World, I can only assume that it was the power grid itself, weakened by two Decades of our Heavy Metal Assault, that finally surrendered to the Glory and the Honor of True Metal Brotherhood.”
Several naysayers, including high officials in the electrical power industry, insist that an overloaded line in Ohio, or even an attack from computer hackers, are the only likely causes of the outage. “The notion that a guitar player hitting a chord could knock out the entire northeast grid is ludicrous,” commented Cleveland First Energy spokesman Wiffley Snidegarb, on condition of anonymity. “I mean, maybe if it was DeMaio playing 'Flight of the Bumblebee' on bass. Maybe.”
Manowar has stated that, despite their refusal to turn down or in any way betray the heavy metal cause, they do feel sympathy for the cities left hungry and powerless by the force of their might. “We hereby issue the call to all True Metal Brothers and Well-Endowed Women of Steel – come to us, to our studio, and we will teach you the primitive ways of hunting, gathering, conquering and pillaging. These old ways of survival will be useful soon, as it has become obvious that Manowar's uncompromising Sonic Savagery is too strong for civilization itself to endure. Once the Blood-Forged Might of our Victorious Anthems cause this weak-willed Society and its trappings to crumble, the World's Loudest Band will lead you all to a new era, where Real Men hunt for their meat in the woods, and @#%$ their Metal Maidens with Lust and Pride near a roaring fire next to a cave, while drinking their Beer from a hollowed horn and bellowing praises to the Old Gods. The time is nearly upon us, Brothers and Sisters!”
DeMaio concluded that, should fans be unable or unwilling to shed their modern lives and move to the woods of upstate New York to live naked in a cave, that purchasing a t-shirt or mesh-backed baseball cap from the band's online store would be “almost as cool.”
Finally the truth comes out.

I found this on The Mark Of Cain's website-
"Yes, we've seen the guest book entries saying what lazy c**nts we are for not putting up any news. So, I will update the site myself and see if I can learn how to do web-site design in my spare time.
We have had 2 web designers in the last 2 years agree to redesign the site, and so far none have delivered on time and this has been quite a source of frustration to both Kim and myself, and I would say, and quite justifiably, to Sue (Administrator) as well. The costs for any re-development are too high for our meager budget so I will update this section today, and start learning how to get products such as Flash and Shockwave working with dreamweaver or whatever web design tools I end up getting.
If anyone has some experience in managing a Forum, and I'm thinking that perhaps someone out there who uses it frequently and likes that sort of thing, perhaps they could drop us a line if they are interested in taking over the Forum, ie.maintenance and moderation etc. We would pay back in gratis or some other arrangement.
I finished work on the The 13th House music last November 2002. As I mentioned earlier, it was grueling. The music they wanted changed every 2 weeks, and eventually I gave them what I had written and asked a real composer to help them out on the stuff they wanted to sound like "insert other music style here". Here is a link to The Thirteenth House site....it looks like a corporate site so don't be fooled, it can be weird to navigate but I am sure you will work it out.
My music is in the last third of the film, and I will put some pieces up for download should anyone want to hear what a rock and roll guy does when he has to write synth music with "ABSOLUTELY NO DRUMS or PERCUSSION ALLOWED!!!" I think my friend Shane did a great job directing though and the film was given a good review by David Stratten.
I believe it may get toured nationally at small theatres, so if I find out anymore I will put it here.
So, we said an album was due early 2003 - well, that didn't happen. Reasons why?
Kim is now totally in charge of the company he began working for 11 years ago. That means a lot of his time is involved in work, meetings, flying interstate and overseas. He also has a wife and 2 children who also like to see him. I guess it's called getting old, but that is the way it goes.
Me, well, apart from the the f*cked up attempt at writing music for films, I am still working also, and although I have no family per se, it seems as you get older your day job asks for more time as you get more responsibility. That word still makes me shudder....
I have a side-project called, tentatively, "ZERO KILLS" - 3 piece, just trying to write and work out what we are doing. I will give more on that later.
Tomahawk have released another album (yeah, well it;s easy to do when you have a drummer there all the time), and John Stanier is touring with Patton, Duane et all, plus is in another band called "Battles" with ex-Don Cabbellero members. John doesn't want to come over here for just a tour, he wants to record as well as tour - Otherwise we would have toured again already. John's not used to touring the same material for 4 years I guess like we are - he actually likes new material each year - funny guy!
So - where does that leave The Mark of Cain? All I can ask is that our fans (those who are left) try and remember that unlike most bands, we are not in this for the money and fame, and we are people who work during the day and are just like you. We have to try find the time to do these things and sometimes it is hard. So, while most bands tour incessantly to try and "make it", or pay the bills, and therefore most times write shit to fill up their expected quota of albums - we like to do it our way.
My plan is to secure the services of a drummer to rehearse some tmoc songs, so we can develop some ideas and send them to Stanier. He will then learn them and come over next year to record and tour. Kim and I both would prefer John to remain a part of the band (even while playing in others that pay well), as at this point Kim nor I think we can deal with going through watching/listening to yet another drummer learning the intricacies of Pointman (Stanno called this "Calculus Rock") - and the dearth of songs we already have from over all the years.
Hope this catches you up.
Thank you again to those who remain true.

1. Tell them every metal band worships the devil.
2. Ask if all black metal bands are trying to copy KISS or just most of them.
3. Hide their joint under their library card.
4. Ask if they know of any other cool bands like Slipknot.
5. If they're listening to metal, tell them it sounds like some mainstream band. Doesn't matter who.
6. Say it's all a ripoff of Iron Butterfly anyway.
7. Ask if they've given their souls to Jesus yet.
8. Vaguely imply that you're gay and would like their company for the evening.
9. Record over their Cannibal Corpse albums with other Cannibal Corpse albums and see if they ever notice the difference.
10. Refuse to accept their fake I.D.
11. Ask how much Dio got paid for his role as Stuart Little.
12. Use the phrase "cookie monster vocals" and act like it's the funniest, most original thing you've ever come up with.
13. If they're listening to metal, tell them "These guys don't have talent. Now <insert any mainstream band here>, those guys have talent!"
14. Say "What is vinyl?"
15. Point out how stupid manowar is. If they agree, tell them the only thing more stupid is Black Sabbath with Dio.
16. Tell them it all sounds the same.
17. Admit that Cliff Burton was a dirty hippy who had already peaked musically.
18. If they say they love 80s metal, ask them what ever happened to Poison.
19. Tell them you like underground music too, like <insert the newest overhyped fashionable loud-ish band from the radio>
20. Point out that Tarja from Nightwish can't sing.
21. Insist that Emperor videos would be better if they used a dance troupe.
22. Ask if Mayhem is Marilyn Manson's band.
23. Divert their CD shipments to the local Jewish community center.
24. Write "God Loves You" on their Venom backpatch.
25. Point out that just about every genre of music has an underground with bands who have integrity, so metal really isn't that unique.
26. Post under their nickname on a power metal board and say Ray Alder shits all over John Arch.
27. Take out the Iron Maiden disc and put in 50 Cent.
28. Give them a spiky pop-punk haircut while they sleep.
29. Pronounce "Celtic Frost" correctly.
30. If they're over 25, say that people can still rock even if they have an unplanned child or two and drive a grocery getter. Then point and laugh.
31. Tell them you're not hiring and to try the other Cinnabon down the street.
32. Sit quietly and applaud politely at a metal show.
33. Make them be sober for five whole seconds.
34. Ask if Randy Rhoads was on the same flight as John Denver.
35. Tell them Korn brought metal back to life in the 90s.
36. Turn the bass way up on their stereo.
37. Laugh at Slayer for stealing their name from the Buffy show.
38. Call Doro fat.
39. Call them on their horrible grammar and/or spelling.
40. Remind them that metal is partially derived from the blues. Then accuse them of being wiggers.
41. Use the phrase "balls in a vice" at least three times when talking about classic metal and/or power metal vocalists.
42. If it's a guy with long hair, address him as if he were female. Don't correct yourself about it.
43. Be impressed with how much RoadRunner Records has improved over the past ten years.
44. Say you love Metallica's debut, The Black Album.
45. Notice that Lemmy hasn't moved his left hand in 30 years of playing bass.
46. Refer to metal as "that kill-your-father rape-your-mother stuff."
47. Ask them if their favorite band is so good, how come nobody has ever heard of them.
48. Pine for the good old days when Pour Some Sugar On Me was a big hit.
49. Tell them you used to be a metalhead, but grew out of it when you started listening to more intellectual stuff like <insert any band at all here>
50. Post a list of "Ways To Annoy Metal Fans" knowing full well that so many of them internalize everything and can't take a joke.

Anyone watch Uranium? Well it's a metal show with a super hot host. Last night she interviewed Strapping Young Lad, Nile and Napalm Death.
Devy looks like bald Ted Nugent. He's real nice though, funny too. Same goes for the drummer. She asked what bands they hate, and like before she even finished the question Devy was like "PAPA ROACH!".
One of the dudes from Nile looks like Shawn Michaels. They were cool too.
Napalm Death guy looks like Hagrad from Harry Potter. They were all serious and political.
Anyays, totally random, but if you have Fuse (formerly Much Music) check the show out. They play some shitty stuff (Disturbed :nono: ) but for the most part its quality videos and cool bands being interviewed.
Plus the host  Mmmmm.
Crabby
August 30th, 2003, 5:00 PM
Napalm Death have just put out a best-of style compilation.I might have to pick it up.
Devy does kinda look old for a guy who's 31 but hell,it's Devy. The man is a metal genius and I couldnt care less what he looks like. And Gene Hoglan is one of the very best drummers in the world.
Have you checked out any of his non-Strapping Young Lad projects yet,BurnZ?

I know you weren't ripping on Devy.I was just making a general comment on the matter.
Check out Ocean Machine's "Biomech" or Devin Townsend Band's "Accelerated Evolution".Both awesome melodic metal albums. Not as heavy and intense as SYL but pretty damn good.
In other news, Dungeon's "A Rise To Power" is getting a bunch of different re-issues for Australia,Japan and the US with some cool cover tracks.
NiMMERS
August 30th, 2003, 9:42 PM
Devin only looks old cos of the DevCut TM. He brings new life to the skirted eggshell look.
I suggest getting 'Infinity' for all it's weirdness. It's simply awesome and the most challenging listen of all his works.
It's also worth getting your hands on Ass Sordid Demos. Which has some early versions of his songs which appear on Biomech and Infinity. I think you can only get it via HevyDevy online though.

Crabby you need some Zimmers Hole. It's spoof metal with lyrics that are complete blue vein cheese but it's top music taking the piss out of metal.

I wonder who we play in the semis? I think it's either the Raiders or the Panthers or something.
I forgot to add my 2 cents on the new Machine Head track. It sounds alright. It's way better than anything on Supercharger or The Burning Red but it's by no means a return to form. Somewhere between the Burn My Eyes/The More Things Change... sound by the putrid smell of the 2 preceding albums still lingers like a rancid fart.

I thought this was interesting-
"ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante recently spoke to Brendan Manley of the Long Island Press about the disappointing U.S. sales performance of the band's latest CD, "We've Come For You All". "We're very happy with [the record]," Benante said. "We just want it to start selling more. Whoever has it loves it. It's just [a matter of] reaching these other people that are just sleepin'."
Benante says that the blame for the low sales of ANTHRAX latest CD can be attributed to the current trends in American pop music, which he claims place a premium on hit singles and star quality. "I think that people [in America] are just stupid," he said. "They are not like the Europeans. The Europeans fuckin' love it, ya know? They love their music — they're loyal. See, over there, it's about the record, it's about the band. Over here it's about the fucking song. ... It just doesn't make sense to me sometimes. What happened here? It's sad."
"It's just a very sad time for music," Benante said of the recent rap-metal/nu-metal trend. "I've felt that way for a while now—that music now is just contrived, and it's just people just ripping off [whatever else is] popular and there's no real integrity in it. There's no growth, there's nothing. LINKIN PARK — their second album is basically the first album." Read more."

I'm getting goosebumps :$
:headbang:
When I was wandering in the desert I was searching for the truth
I heard of choir angels calling out my name
I had some feeling that my life would never be the same again
I turned my face towards the barron sun.
And I know, all the pain, that you feel the same as me
And I dream of the rain as it falls upon the leaves
And the cracks in our lives live the cracks upon the ground
They are sealed and now washed away
You tell me we can stop the rain
You tell me that we all can change
You tell me we can find something to wash the tears away
You tell me we can stop the rain
You tell me that we all can change
You tell me we can find something to wash the tears
And I know, all the pain, that you feel the same as me
And I dream of the rain as it falls upon the leaves
And the cracks in the ground like the cracks are in our lives
They are sealed and are now far away
You tell me we can stop the rain
You tell me that we all can change
You tell me we can find something to wash the tears away
You tell me we can stop the rain
You tell me that we all can change
You tell me we can find something to wash the tears away
You tell me we can stop the rain
You tell me that we all can change
You tell me we can find something to wash the tears away
You tell me we can stop the rain

Soilwork or In Flames?
The Metal Community is pretty much the same worldwide, not really going for trends or anything.
But as it will be said and has been said before In Flames are going downhill, they're still good but they were MUCH better. Goes for Soilwork also.
But yeah Metalheads pretty much like the same bands all over the world. Just that opinion will differ depending on which metal circle you are a part of.

In Flames are nowhere near as good as they were in the 90's and the turnover of the century.

Enemies of Reality suffers from a really bad production by Kelly Gray and really bad EQ. It's a well written album but the production takes a hell of alot away.
Dead Heart In A Dead World is so much better. It's a fucking awesome album and brilliant production (Andy Sneap)
And you know with Sneap it's gotta be good.

Mickey, I found this on the HevyDevy site about the new SYL EP-
"Strapping has a new song written called “Love” for the upcoming EP that incorporates all of the heaviness of past Strapping with a bit of dark Infinity flair. The EP will contain 4 new songs and 4 cover songs. They have a huge list they are choosing from but will whittle it down before the studio. On the subject of cover songs SYL has also agreed to appear on an upcoming Melvins tribute album doing the song “Zodiac”."

Here's something I thought was interesting-
"Well I guess that everyone is more than familiar with Slayer guitarist, Kerry King’s desire to speak his mind.
From an article in Terrorizer Magazine, where King was asked to listen to a series of tracks and give his opinion on them.
Metallica ‘St. Anger’.
Kerry King: (2 seconds in) "Ugh! I know what that is! You can tell right away by the shitty mix. I made myself listen to this album twice, just to make sure I hated it as much as I hate it.
"I mean, what is that?,” says King of the snare sound. “Sounds like he's hitting a Pepsi can or something when it should be a snare sound. I like that intro riff, it could be heavy if it was mixed, this would sound awesome. I'm not sure what they were going for in the mix. For me, it's just the mix.
On the album being the supposed "return to form" that most of the rock press are heralding it as: "Yeah, I read that, and I was like, 'What record were they listening to?' I bet it sounds pretty decent live, and those songs are alright, but there's no reason for those songs to be seven minutes long, let along eight or nine. It's like they have one of the better guitar players on the planet, and they're not letting him play lead. It's kinda like putting cuffs on him. I personally can't understand it. I think the lyrics could have gone further than fuckin' rehab. James needs to have a fuckin' shot and get over it.
"The whole thing about this album that really bugged me is like, 'What was up with the last record ('Load'/'Re-Load')? I thought that's what you liked?' And now they think they're heavy again? To me, I've lived this all my life, day in, day out. I might be Kerry King the homeboy for some of the time, but I'm always Slayer. Metallica weren't Metallica for 10 years. I think when you don't live it, and try to jump back into it… It just doesn't work out."
Anthrax ‘We've Come For You All’.
Kerry King: "Yeah, I got it. It's generic. I like John Bush's singing. I saw 'em the other day and it looks like they're trying to put it back together. I hope they can, but I think they've shot themselves in the foot too many times, and it's hard to take people seriously when they've done so many goofs. Those pentagrams bug me. You don't just take the pentagram up 20 years into your career. It's like, 'Pentagrams are cool,' so they have them. Fans aren't stupid any more, 'cause I am a fan. I know these guys, but I'm a fan of the music. Shit like that sticks out to me. 'These guys never had pentagrams before, what's up with that?' It's like they didn't think it out completely. It'd be like us using clocks with skulls for our stage show or something."
The Haunted ‘Three Times’.
Kerry King: "[hums the riff immediately] The best album The Haunted ever put out! I love The Haunted! Though I don't think they've made a record as good as the first one. Not saying the second and third ones suck, but I still play this first CD. I got it in my hotel room right now. I know my shit. I love that record. We've only played festivals with The Haunted, never been on a tour together. That'd be something interesting for the fans to see… A good band."
In the same article, King was asked about the progress of the songwriting sessions for Slayer’s new studio album, the group's first since the return of drummer Dave Lombardo.
"We're already working on new stuff," Kerry said. "We don't have any that we're playing. We've got about five almost finished, and four or five more that we haven't even worked on yet. It takes Dave awhile to learn the new stuff.
When asked how Dave is taking to the new songs that he didn't play on record, King said, "It's awesome. He knows the songs, but we don't put the handcuffs on and make him play like fuckin' Paul (ex drummer). Paul was a lot more technical and big-time pay attention to detail, whereas Dave is a loose cannon. You never know how it's gonna end up, but it always comes out right."

DREAM THEATER To Release 'Train Of Thought' In November - Sep. 12, 2003
DREAM THEATER have set "Train Of Thought" as the title for their new album, tentatively due on November 11 through Elektra Records.
The complete track listing for the CD is as follows:
01. As I Am
02. This Dying Soul
03. Endless Sacrifice
04. Honor Thy Father
05. Vacant
06. Stream Of Consciousness
07. In The Name Of God
"Train Of Thought" was produced by John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy and engineered by Doug Oberkircher. It was mixed by Kevin Shirley, who has previously worked with IRON MAIDEN, LED ZEPPELIN and JOURNEY, among others.
Hopefully it doesn't contain as much filler as the last DT album.

Dude, they're a lot different than Anal Cunt. They can form a coherent song. Glen Benton's anti-christian rants can be tiresome, but he's a moron (even though he does have an awesome voice), and it doesn't take away from the music.
Simon
September 16th, 2003, 9:24 PM
I don't mean they're the same as Anal Cunt in terms of sound, but in terms of having relatively little actual talent and relying almost entirely on the titles of their songs to get any acknowledgement (I was going to say the 'lyrics', but they're borderline indecipherable)...plus Anal Cunt did that song 'The Gayest Guy On Earth' which rules.
Perhaps a more fitting comparison is Skrewdriver...just dull, senseless drivel about a shocking subject that relies entirely on the hysteria surrounding the titles. Stupid.

Seeing as we're having a discussion over metal bands, that wasn't really necessary. But you keep trying.
I generally stay away from the Death Metal net scene, but I've heard a lot of stuff about Skrewdriver, none of it related to the quality of their music. Deicide is somewhat similar, although people usually accept that the guy has a decent voice.

Actually, his voice is one of the easiest in death metal to understand on the Serpents of the Light album. You can understand every word.
But to say they have no talent is absurd. They did a lot for death metal with their earlier albums. And to even be in a mediocre death metal band, in terms of talent (for a drummer or guitarist, at least) isn't easy. It's one of the most physically demanding forms of music.
I doubted Glen Benton's sincerity on what he talks about, but then I remembered that this is the same guy that branded an inverted cross into his forehead. But that's what makes him great. He really means what he says, and that makes him look like a huge tool. His threatening on-air phone calls to radio-evangelist Bob Larson are comedic gold.
