Got to head up to Philly and see Lamb of God over the weekend for my birthday. Fucking kicked ass, and Randy was much less shitfaced than the last time I saw them. And got to see a band I damn near forgot about. In Flames. They kicked ass. Even if they only played two songs that I remember from when I listened to them. Hellyeah was there too. Meh. They're a band that's better live than in the studio. I enjoyed what they played, but hate everything of theirs that I hear on the radio.
I dunno if it's METAL enough for you guys but the new Deftones record is excellent.
Not technically metal, no, but I liked it well enough. Diamond Eyes thus far is still a superior album, but I've got to give the new one a few more listens. Used to hate hate hate the Deftones, and now on the opposite side of the spectrum. Not usual that a band has that type of turnaround with me. I'm used to liking a band and then hating them after a while, but the other way around is a rarity.

They've always been on the cusp of metal for me. Some label them Alternative Rock, others Alternative Metal.
Either way, the new album is excellent. I'd place it above Diamond Eyes.

Pick for metal album of the year everyone? I honestly didn't listen to a whole lot of stuff that came out this year, but 'From the Depths' by Karybdis gets album of the year from me. The new Gojira was also really good. Downloaded their 'From Mars to Sirius' album and its pretty awesome. Love that band.

A lot of good stuff came out this year. "A Frail Becoming" by Daylight Dies is my pick for album of the year. Lamb Of God, Vision Of Disorder, Gojira, and Fear Factory delivered some solid albums as well.

I just can't get into Meshuggah. Its the vocals mostly. I think their music is good but I just cant get into the vocals. Although I felt the exact same way about Gojira and they grew on me and now I think they might be perfect.

Sometimes the vocals can kill a band for you. I love his(Jens from Meshuggah) vocals, and I have ever since years ago when I first heard the band. It's not your typical Death Metal growl, but it's definitely abrasive without leaning towards, say, Grind or Black Metal. Musically, though, I do not think there are many other bands out there that can touch 'em.
I didn't even know Gojira had a new album out this year. I'll have to check that out.

I feel the same way. There have been plenty of bands where I started rocking out to a song only to hear the vocals and say no thanks. I feel the same way about Gojira that you feel about Meshuggah even though I know they're not as technical. Gojira's latest album is called L'Enfant Sauvage and its very good.

It's nice to see Newsted doing something that's decidedly thrashy again. I really dug that track. Not the biggest fan of the vocals, but the riffage was sweet. Reminds me of his days in Flotsam and Jetsam.

I saw Down at the Grove Of Anaheim last night. They exceeded my expectations of an awesome show, and after having seen both Down and Superjoint Ritual once before, I can honestly say this is the best I've heard Phil sound. There was also a hilarious wrestling match between Phil and one of the dudes from Warbeast (one of the opening bands who also put on a killer show) in a gorilla costume during Bury Me In Smoke.
Setlist:
Lysergik Funeral Procession
Lifer
Pillars Of Eternity
Witchtripper
Open Coffins
Misfortune Teller
Ghosts Along The Mississippi
New Orleans Is A Dying Whore
Temptation's Wings
Losing All
Eyes Of The South
Encore:
Hail The Leaf
Stone The Crow
Bury Me In Smoke

I love it. Kyo has really changed up his vocals on the last two albums, but not in a bad way. Much less growling/screaming and more melodic singing, with some nasty death vocals. His vocals used to be more in the middle, but now he uses two styles that are just polar opposites of each other and they just work so well. This track is much more melodic and soft, but it's just so damn beautiful. Can't wait for this EP to drop. There just isn't much that I actually look forward to it coming out anymore.

So, er, uh . . . new Killswitch out today. DL'ed it and can't wait to listen to it, if it's anywhere as good as I've built it up to be be in my head (as well as having listened to "In Due Time" and "No End in Sight").

From what I've read its typical Killswitch Engage. I actually prefer Jones to Leach. I've seen them live twice, with each singer and they were very good. I'm not a huge fan of the band though.
So I just found out Children of Bodom has a new album coming out in a few months. Now I was excited about their last album and it turned out to be shit. But they are using the recording engineer from their first couple albums and the new album is supposed to have a lot of variety and sound more like their first few albums.

Bump. Cuz, metal.
DL'ed Sabbath's tune "God is Dead?" and while still saddened that Bill won't be participating, I must say I had goosebumps within the first 45 seconds or so, hearing at least 3/4 of my favorite band of all time all together. I'm being a nerd and counting down songs on my FB.
And on the new KsE, while I think Jones is a better vocalist than Leach overall, the new album is greatness. Yes, it is more or less "typical Killswitch," but it's away from the more minimalist approach they'd gone in with the last album, and Leach's vocals have matured overall and just sound better with the band now than they did back in Alive or Just Breathing.

They tried it at Dio's funeral. Didn't work out too well for them and apparently no lesson learned. In all seriousness, protesting at Jeff's funeral could lead to their own. Hope nothing happens. I don't want the metal community linked to a murder. Forget that As I Lay Dying bullshit. Classic metal is so far removed from today's metal. Don't care what happens to that guy. Quite honestly, I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. I'm a huge proponent of freedom of speech and it's not that I don't think they have the right to let their voices be heard, but in cases of interfering with sacred events such as funerals where people have the right to grieve without having it turn into a display of some hate group's warped "cause", that's crossing the line of decency. I understand (and to an extent agree with) the argument of denying these morons the attention they crave by ignoring them, but at the same time they need to be taught a lesson and a huge part of me would be happy if Slayer fans were the ones to teach it to them. I just wish it were possible without it reflecting negatively on the metal community or giving the WBC a reason to sue, much less giving their "cause" any perceived sense of validity.

Been listening to some new stuff lately.
Dreamshade is a band I found out about a long time ago. Back then they were a melodic death band and now they've got a new singer and are now more of a metalcore band. If you like Killswitch Engage or older All That Remains you would probably like these guys. Their latest album The Gift of Life has gotten very good reviews. They were better back then but they are pretty solid.
http://youtu.be/UQfNZ-lLsbw
The band Starkill is a band I just found out about. I bought their album The Fires of Life off Amazon and I'm loving it. Its some really good melodic death metal with some power metal thrown in. Really awesome stuff I think.
http://youtu.be/uNdqmx6eERQ
The other band I just found out about is Blood and Thunder. Ordered a copy of their new album A Reality in Ruins and can't wait to get it in a few days. Just a badass melodic death metal band.

What do you guys think of Rob Zombie? I was listening to a White Zombie song on the way to work, can't remember the name of it but it was pretty cool.
WizoOzz
June 19th, 2013, 9:08 AM
My opinion - the majority of Rob Zombie's solo stuff is terrible, whereas the majority of White Zombie was awesome. Hellbilly Deluxe was good, in that it felt like a natural progression for Rob. But anything after that was just blech.
And mr sabu, that's blasphemous.
Honestly, I can see where the people who are griping about the new Sabbath are coming from - the main album is kind of slow. But the bonus tracks make the album whole because they're slightly more uptempo. For a band that hadn't been actively together for the better part of 30 years, and considering the goal of the new Sabbath album was to put out an album that sounded like "what if Black Sabbath had just started today?" I think it did a pretty accurate and successful job. It's not Paranoid or Sabotage, but it's damned good when put up against the last two "classic lineup" albums.

So . . . Kirk Windstein left Down to focus on Crowbar, which from what I've read was basically crumbling around him. Evidently the guy who is the bassist for Down now was the bassist for Crowbar also, and it looks like Down chose sides.
My understanding also is that Kirk was pretty formative to Down's sound. Soooooooo . . . yeah. There's that.

Each to their own. I've always loved Maiden the only albums I dislike of their theirs is Fear of The Dark (the title track is one of the few bright spots) and the Blaze Bayley albums which surprised me as I liked Wolfsbane.
WizoOzz
October 23rd, 2013, 2:08 PM
Maiden's grown on me since Brave New World, as I kind of figured if they can put out an album that solid, surely there's more to be found. Lo and behold, I've found a lot of the stuff I like from them. I was disappointed with the following album, but in the meantime have "acquired" enough of their songs that I'm content to (and able to support my) respect (for) them.
But anyway, Machine Head's putting out some of the best recent/modern metal from my perspective. That's not saying necessarily a whole lot given the general state of metal (and to that end, music in general), but I think it's fairly accurate.
Gary J
October 23rd, 2013, 2:13 PM

Basically anything epic by them. Love "Fear of the Dark," "Number of the Beast," "The Trooper." I mean, songs that are basically staples to any self-appointed metalhead. Not going to say I'm a Maiden expert by any stretch, but certainly any number of beloved songs of theirs deserves attention. Wish the same could be said for Judas Priest, who in my opinion has a definite dearth in their catalogue in comparison.

If you haven't done so already, check out the remastered edition of As The Palaces Burn that came out a couple weeks ago. Usually these "remasters" are mere cash grabs, but in this case Josh Wilbur really did make the album sound better (not that it sounded bad at all), especially Vigil.

Did manage to pick it up. And it 100% sounds better than the original recording. Easily worth whatever I spent on Amazon - one of those bands I don't mind acquiring through monetary exchange. I'm also eagerly anticipating the documentary surrounding the trial.
This is the first time I've seen a band on two ends of their touring cycle, but all in all, well worth the money spent. Third time seeing LOG, second seeing KsE (first with Jesse singing), and was duly impressed by Testament (who I've just never really gotten into) and Huntress (who I expected very little out of, but was definitely pleasantly surprised). All around, it was in the upper tier of shows I've been to.

I'm a huge Monster Magnet fan, i consider them "stoner-hard rock" yet in their music there's bits of "metalish riffs".
I know the term "stoner" is very limited, yet i think it defines them well and their major influences like "Sabbath" or "Hawkwind", it owes so much to psychedelec rock but also owes lots to metal...

Slowly warmed up to most of it. Biohazard's cover of "After Forever" is decent, and COC's "Lord of this World" is fucking badass. Even the Ugly Kid Joe cover is semi-decent. The only one I hate is the 1000 Homo DJ's cover of "Supernaut."
The second Nativity in Black, though . . . yeesh. Some crap on it.
The third one is just a fan made thing. Honestly wouldn't worry about it.

Yeah the second one was bad which is why I didn't realise there was a third thought they must have given up on the idea. Agree about the 1000 Homo Dj's track though and yeah probably is the only track I skip on it,

I actually disagree with this. I mean, I would say some of the Corpsegrinder stuff isn't as good, but that's more to do with how long CC's been a band. I think the best material with Corpsegrinder is better than the best of the Barnes-era. Corpsegrinder's just a better vocalist. That said, The Bleeding is one of their best albums, but I think I'd put Vile above that.
WizoOzz

I could see that. Corpsegrinder has been with them longer by now, surely. Aside from that, thought, 'tis subjective.
Regardless, their track record is still better than a lot of the more mainstream acts out there.

I had heard some rumors about Dave Brockie and Don Drakulich(Oderus and Sleazy P. Martini) pretty much stealing GWAR from the original guys who started it and not paying the rest of the guys what they deserved(why Slymenstra supposedly left). Hearing about these rumors kind of soured me on GWAR for a long time, but they will always hold a special place in my heart.
Brockie may have been a cock in real life(if the rumor is true), but Oderus Urungus is a character that I will always love. Proud to say I was able to see these guys four times before it became an impossibility.

I've heard great things about Revocation from pretty much everybody, but keep forgetting to check them out.
I think one of the most recent bands I've checked into is Coffins. Great sludgy death. Ruins of Beverast is another more recent one. But mind you, I first got into these bands about 4-6 years ago, and those are probably the most recent I've heard as far as newer bands.

Same. It was one of the first metal CDs I purchased next to Chimaira's Impossibilities of Reason. Those two albums(and bands in general) were my gateway into heavier music. Before that, I think the heaviest I listened to was Slipknot and the popular Slayer songs.
Then I bought Hell Awaits and everything changed.
WizoOzz
September 24th, 2015, 6:53 AM
I honestly rarely check out anything new anymore. I'm not overwhelmingly pleased with the more or less black metal roots things seem to be taking rather than a more traditional, less gimmicky sound.
Having kids really fucks with your ability to stay atop certain things until they get older. I've stilted their tastes, certainly, now that one's in double digits and the other will be soon.
The stuff I've mainly entrenched myself in are mostly the stoner/throwback sounding acts like The Sword, Fireball Ministry (dur), and Kadavar. Ghost, while a huge gimmick, I adore the music so much. They covered "Here Comes the Sun," and turned a light, shiny song into dread and misery and it was just fucking perfect. Their EP, which is mostly covers, is fucking aces.
On the more extreme end, Skeletonwitch's Serpents Unleashed is really, really solid, if rooted in black metal to some degree.
I mainly resort to finding old shit that I don't already have, or bands I never gave a chance to back in the day. Deicide. Giving Iron Maiden a more fair shake since I've grown into it.
Black Sabbath's farewell is going to prompt me to listen to more Sabbath, surely. Even the non-Ozzy stuff. I've grown to love Dio Sabbath a lot more since he kicked the bucket.

I saw Machine Head for the first time last night in Milwaukee. Best show I've seen. I wasnt familar with some of their older songs but they were awesome. Played for two and a half hours with no opener and tickets were only $25.

Machine head are probably my favorite love band. Rob has an insanely powerful stage presence.

He has a great stage presence. I was really impressed with the other guitarist too as he was right in front of me as i was in the second row and to the left. I wasn't a huge fan of them until The Blackening. Hence my username. I absolutely love their last three albums. And again they were great live and the crowd was really into it.

First two are suggestions of mine pertaining to black metal you may like (I think it strays away from gimmicky type Watain stuff, etc.). Stuff after that are things I think you'd like based off your post. Let me know if you dig any/all of it.
Bölzer - Aura EP [my favorite EP to come out of any genre probably in the last five or so years. Released a subsequent EP in 2014 that was also really sick.]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfjO84q-vA4
Revenge [just released a sick LP titled, "Behold.Total.Rejection." Straight forward, chaotic, hate-filled metal. Has elements of black/death/grind/punk in it. This song is from an earlier album called "Scum.Collapse. Eradication.]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksL2WbSkaXI
Lord Vicar - "Signs of Osiris" & "Fear No Pain" [not as new, but 2011 and 2008 respectively. Badass doom/stoner metal/rock from Finland.]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TlqUuDQ9z8
Decaying - Last Days of War [The music has elements of some of the metallic hc like All Out War / Ringworm / etc. but with vocals that you'd hear from Asphyx or Death, etc.]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP_Iu2DwIzU
Angelus Apatrida - Hidden Evolution [newest album from them, just came out this year. No frills, ass-kicking thrash metal from Spain. Rare combination of skill and songwriting. Should be way bigger than they are. Albums, "Evil Unleashed" and "The Call" are must-haves if you enjoy "Hidden Evolution.

I've only heard a little bit of Deafheaven, but I haven't followed 'em strongly. I remember digging it, though. Aren't they the black metal-ish band with a pop tinge or some weird clash like that?

Honestly, why would anyone really care? Wayne's been dead for 2 years and it's not like she's a metal musician herself. I would literally have never heard about this. I don't even mean to mean, she's just not an important person in the industry.

Not a shocker. I've always heard he was a skinhead and it wasn't just because he had a shaved head. He's a weird fucking dude, GREAT vocalist, one of my favorites no doubt but his values are based out of a heroin needle.

I love Pantera (as well as Down and Superjoint Ritual) but kudos to Robb and the fan who posted that footage. Phil's always been, for lack of a better term, opinionated, and while he technically is free to run his mouth, others are also free to call him out on it.

On my first listen through The Astonishing. I'm definitely not going to be able to appreciate it properly until I've listened multiple times. It's epic ans ambitious and filled with plenty of the bits that makes me love DT but just in writing this I've lost my place in the story and have no fucking idea what's going on right now.
Better get this new job... multiple plays on ten hour flights will sort it out.

Well, not necessarily METAL. Just the standard rock station that plays everything from the last 50 years. You know, where you get a block that's Pink Floyd, Seether, and Pantera, and then the next block is Black Keys, Ozzy, and Nirvana.

ah. There's 1 or 2 rock stations around here and they basically stick to old man "classic" rock and sometimes throw in a hit from the 90s (green day, limp bizkit) or a Metallica track. In this market, though, almost every rock station has turned pop or hip hop, so it would be cool to have a decent rock/metal station again, but it'll never happen.

We have 3 rock stations. 1 that is solely the "classic" station like the 60's-well I guess the early 90's now because I've heard Nirvana and Pearl Jam on there before. We have 1 that is more along the lines of playing bands like Highly Suspect, Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, sometimes they throw in some alternative rock like Sublime, Nirvana.....Then the biggest station, Lazer 103, that's the one I was talking about that plays a variety of rock from the last 50 years. Shitty part of the station is they play wayyyy too much fucking AC/DC. You can bet you hear a song by them every hour, usually Big Balls or Back In Black. A girl I went to high school with is a DJ there and she says that they get requests for the same like 3 bands all time and AC/DC and Metallica are the top bands.
Cool thing is they usually have Corey Taylor popping in to do interviews since he has a house here in Des Moines still so when he's in town he usually stops in and shoots the shit with the main DJ.
