I remember when my friend in middle school picked up October Rust. We just put it on repeat. Good stuff.

I was also thinking back to when the movie Freddy vs. Jason came out. Prior to the debut of the film, the entire soundtrack was streamed on its website.

This little gem was on it: YouTube- Type O Negative - (We Were) Electrocute

When I watched the movie in the theatre, I couldn't help but mark out inside when it played.

Definitely a band that I need to see live before I leave this big blue and green marble.

Same friend of mine who's playing with TAS tomorrow almost had a chance to play with BTBAM! (just feels like it needs an exclamation point) after winning some contest at a local venue. His band was given the option to pick a show and open, no matter how big or small it was. They wanted to play a btbam show, but there was a one year time limit on choosing the show and between the buried and me were playing something like a month or two outside of the time frame. :/

Ok here's where I am in the metal world for the last few months.

As I wrote elsewhere I'm loving this Swedish Glam scene. It's a lovely revival of fun glam.

New Bands like Crashdiet, Babylon Bombs, Gemini Five, Reckless Love, Crazy Lixx, The Last Vegas, Vains of Jenna are all getting played fairly regularly.

And I'm also listening to the older stuff like Ratt, Poison, Motley Crue, Def Leppard.

Sure I'm probably the only one who likes that gay type scene but that's just me. If you like that type of thing I can probably give a bunch of album recommendations, though the latest release from any of the first list of bands is decent glam.

Hopefully now some fresh life can be breathed into DT and we can get something a little less dull on the new records. Yeah, really don't think I like this. I mean, the riff is pretty cool before it gets to the verse, but like you said, it sounds too much like Blooddrunk in the sense that all the songs on Blooddrunk were midtempo. Plus, it doesn't seem like they're trying anywhere near as much as they did in the days of Follow the Reaper.

Come on, Alexi says his favorite album is In Flames' Come Clarity, we should have known after Are You Dead Yet? that it was gonna be over.

Anyone heard the new Deicide album, To Hell With God?

A friend of mine burnt me a copy. I definitely think it sounds better than Till Death Do Us Part, and certain riffs sounds more like something they'd do in the older days.

Still, ever since The Stench of Redemption, these guys haven't been as good, I think. They lost that Deicide feel and in the case of Till Death Do Us Part especially, almost changed into a completely different band.

Of course, there's always room for growth and evolution in a band, but I don't know if I dig the direction they've been going in.

As a an album without any ties to my feelings for Deicide, it's pretty good. I definitely like listening to it, just feels weird.

Honestly, I'm tired of all the breakdown heavy music. Deathcore as a whole disgusts me, because it's overtly heavy music with simple song-writing that they use to trick people into thinking it's technical with simple little string skipping riffs and such.

Some of them are ok, but I'm not really into the screamo-styled deathcore bands like Miss May I.

One thing I hate is how a bunch of the 'core music has the mentality of, 'Let's make a giant breakdown, and spice some riffs in between" instead of the other way around.

I do like old Suffokate. See, I like old hardcore back in the 80's when it was more punk, and I like some of the early 90's hardcore. When it comes to Deathcore, I like Slam Death bands like Gorgasm, Devourment, Lividity etc., because I feel like I'm listening to something more inspired by death metal, and the ones that are really base and simple aren't taken seriously. Plus, I love breakdowns that are more than 3 notes and aren't necessary a "chug chug" riff.

Second City Saint

Belphegor played a badass set, very blackened, and they played a good amount of songs off of Lucifer Incestus and Black Magic Nekromance. Great stuff.

Then, of course, Deicide came on. They opened up with Homage For Satan, which was good, because that way they could get it out of the way. Next they played Dead By Dawn, probably my favorite Deicide song of all time. Aboslutely wonderful. They also played When Satan Rules His World, Dead but Dreaming, and They Are The Children of the Underworld, which are sort of live staples for them, but it was still cool. I really didn't want to see a set too focused on new stuff. They played nothing off of Till Death Do Us Part, which was awesome, and only four songs off of To Hell With God. Honestly, I could have done without any Scars of the Crucifix, but they played two off of those.

Of course, to finish out the show, they played Lunatic of God's Creation and Sacrificial Suicide, which was perfect, though if they ever closed out with Dead by Dawn, that'd be perfect for me.

The only real comlaint I had with Deicide was it sounded like Glen was just warbling out his growls unless it was the highs, which I guess he kind of sounds like that anyway nowadays, but it turned out his mic was just turned down, which he asked for it to be turned up later. Wish he had it high enough for the devastating combo of Dead by Dawn followed by Once Upon The Cross, but those were still badass.

Oh yeah, dude from Belphegor, he literally sounds like the Cookie Monster when he speaks to the crowd.

Lizzy Borden is touring again. First date is in my home city right at a month away. Amazing vocals, guitars, hot chicks dancing about. It's a stage show, similar to Alice Cooper. I really wish it was a straight concert because they are that good, but they do well enough with the performance.

I don't know if there are any poster old enough to appreciate classic metal. I usually only see posts about newer metal stuff. Quality stuff though. Check them out if you've never heard of them. Their latest album sounds like something that could have easily come out in '86(that's good, btw).

Because that's what the current bent of the thread is. If you want to bring something up, just bring it up. For a long time (few years ago) we did discuss the older acts but it just seems people want to talk about whatever new band I haven't heard of. So I don't really post, but if you feel like talking about Iron Maiden or whoever just bring it up.

Mayhemfest was fucking awesome this year. Machine Head killed the second stage, megadeth & godsmack sounded great, but Trivium and Disturbed were both weak. Spent most of Machine Head and Trivium in the pit and even crowd surfed a few times. Injury count:

Cuts on my knees, right ankle, ribs, chest, and a long one down my back
Left knee got tweeked by some fat dude landing on it

I do agree that Tobi is overreaching a bit, but I adore him for releasing an album once every 6 months or so. It covers the void left by many of the bands I love who release once every 3 or so years.

I like that he keeps churning stuff out and isn't afraid to do different stuff within the confines of what he's known for. The new Edguy is so them, but not at the same time. It's an odd album, but it's fantastic.

Have there been any recent metal album releases or can someone point me to a site that lists all 2011 releases? Been needing to find recent albums but most sites I go to only list black/death metal and I don't listen to the majority of that.

Bands in particular that I'm needing to find are:

Kamelot, Dream Theater, Apocalyptica, Ayreon, Demons & Wizards, Iced Earth, Ensiferum, Lacuna Coil, Sonata Arctica, Orphaned Land, Turisas, Luca Turilli, Epica, In This Moment, Blind Guardian, Trivium, Avantasia, Cruachan, Candlemass, Dream Evil, Entwine, Rammstein, Stratovarius, Tiamat, Liquid Horizon, Liquid Tension Experiment, Blood Stain Child.

Anything along those lines or any music suggestions that people would think I may like. I do like Power, Progressive, Symphonic, Gothic, Folk, a little Doom, Heavy, Industrial, some Speed/Thrash. Just not really a fan of most Black and Death. But I desperately need new music. So any help would be much appreciated, whether it be new albums from any of the bands above [That's definitely not -everything- I listen to, just ones I'm seeking at the moment] or other suggestions.

Looking forward to the new Sabbath stuff though. That's what it's going to take to make Ozzy return to real metal and let go of the modern trends. Tony Iommi is a traditional metal hero.

My problem with metal, and this is coming from someone who's been a metalhead since the age of 11, is that there's no growth in the genre. The scene is polluted with metalcore, black, death, and grindcore bands who all sound the fucking same. You've obviously the breakout bands like Mastodon, BTBAM, and Meshuggah who are all still innovating, but then you've the other 99% of the genre which is filled with shit. When I stop and think about the bands that I wanna see, my list is comprised mostly of older bands, bands I've already seen, and very, VERY few newer bands.

Again, I don't hate metal. I've rocked the devil horns for over 10 years now. I grew up on 'tallica and slipknot. I got sent home from school for wearing a cannibal corpse t-shirt. The first song I ever blasted in my car was by venom. I'm a metalhead and I can honestly say that the metal scene is wildly polluted with shit right now.

I've been into metal since '86, so naturally I listed to the classic stuff and the newer stuff of the older bands

I absolutely HATE modern metal. Different keys, different song structures, etc. It's technically inferior to the old stuff and sadly that's not an opinion.

But there is hope. There is no growth, but like always, what one was old becomes new again in time. There are bands fed up with the modern garbage called NWOTHM(new wave of traditional heavy metal), a take on the old (NWOBHM) style. GO CHECK THIS OUT. These guys keep it real. It's like a beautiful time warp:).

There are reasons that the modern bands suck compared to the old stuff, but that's a long conversation about the rise of the technically inferior alternative music and how there were no one to pass down the art. They kind of started new with an alternative base instead of a traditional metal one.

I really like Cauldron, I've recently bought 2 of their albums. They basically sound like a cross between Helloween and early, pre-hits era Scorpions. Steelwing, who sounds like early Dickinson era Iron maiden. Enforcer, who sounds like early, pre Dickinson Maiden crossed with early Motley Crue Too Fast for Love era. Kep in mind that none of this stuff brings anything new to the table, but that why it is so good. Like I said, what was once old always becomes new again. Just goes to show that people don't appreciate something until its gone.

There are a lot of band out there that pretty much encompass all that is pre-90' metal. The thing I like about it mot, no d-tuning! Check out this like for a little more info http://www.facebook.com/NWOTHM (http://www.facebook.com/NWOTHM)

If you ever liked classic metal, there is a band out there using their influence while keeping it traditional at the same time. The thing is, the kids today think that stuff is dated and kind of unhip(but they don't really know shit), while guys like me in their 30's pull the sound and look off with style and get praised for it. Don't be afraid to get a little retro!

I will agree with this statement. "Metal" usually refers to the newer acts while "heavy metal" often refers to the pre-'95 era of the genre. The new stuff is incredibly weak. Bands play everything in the same fucking key, use the same scales. It's incredibly boring and is a tremendous step backwards musically. DVDA is right, it sucks dick and fucks man holes.

To QuietStorm: Stop beating off to Opeth, Nightwish, and various forms of death and/or black metal. Go beat off to some Maiden. It's a much better ride.

You're telling me you don't dig Opeth or ANY Death Metal? Morbid Angel, Obituary, and Death are the shit.

Maiden's awesome, too, but there's plenty to like about the heavier stuff, even if most of the bands coming out today suck.

That's so stupid and wrong it's not funny.

Metal is a broad category. Heavy Metal is a sub-genre of such a category. Just like Power Metal, Progressive Metal, Glam Metal. None of those 3 are "heavy metal" but they're still metal.

Metal is like Rock, there's a lot of sub-genres of Rock, some of them are great. Some of them suck.

You must be listening to a very slim selection of metal. Most of the bands I listen to never talk about how their life sucks.

Most of that is radio metal, metalcore, screamo, some goth metal, and in my opinion, all of that sucks.

publicist says that he hasn't actually been charged with anything and that they are just in the investigation stages of everyhing. says that the fan rushed the stage 3 different times..

this sucks.. I can't blame Randy.. I mean after what happened with Dime, ya just never know. He definitely never intended to kill or even harm the guy.. he just didn't want him on the stage, where he didn't belong and where security is paid to keep him from. I don't really see how the blame can fall to him directly at all.

Brief video clip of the incident .. gotta be honest.. I've seen Randy and countless other hardcore/metal singers do this to people at other shows.. obviously nothing happened at those shows though. Also, it looks to me like the security guard is also tossing the guy .. still.. don't see how you can prove any intent. His only intention was to get the man off the stage.. where he illegally was.

I liken it to home invasion. You as a fan know that the stage is off limits, I don't care what country you live in. It's legit common sense to look @ the crowd, notice no one else is trying to get on stage, so why would you? It's not like he did some Axl Rose shit and dove out into the crowd after the guy. Like you said, after Dimebag when things got REAL fucked up, you never know. Especially in a country like Prague, all haunted and scary, you'd be lucky to avoid a shot to the yarbles Billy.

I listen to some metal, just the interesting stuff that (generally) isn't overly camp. It's probably the genre with the most chaff that you have to separate from the wheat though. I'd say I'm more of a fan of "heavy" music, with some of it being metal or 'metally'.

Bands that I listen to that some may call metal:
Converge
Deftones
Isis
Neurosis
The Dillinger Escape Plan
Wolves in the Throne Room (pretty camp though with all the black metal shenanigans)
Baroness
Kylesa
Every Time I Die

Coming at the genre from more an alternative/punk perspective means that I'm far less interested in the generic toss that gets thrown about usually.

I essentially like all of those bands except for Every Time I Die and modern day Dillinger. I'm not as into the hardcore/punk/post-metal/hardcore stuff as I am Death/Thrash/Black Metal, but a lot of that shit is enjoyable. Converge has always been awesome, big fan of Neurosis, and Baroness and Kylesa are great stoner-ish rock/metal. Just groovy yet heavy at the same time. I dig Isis, too, though I don't listen to them as much as I would the other acts.

And, of course, I'm all about some Wolves in the Throne Room.

There is a lot of generic music in the metal community going around, though. The popular "Deathcore" in particular makes me personally cringe.

What's all this Danzig III isn't as good as Danzig II talk in here?

I think III is the most solid Danzig album front to back, and the culmination of what was built in I and II. 5 is where it all fell apart and he tried to put it back together with 6, but anything after 7 makes up for the losses that were Blackacidevil and Satan's Child.

If you liked everything up to Thornography, there's a good chance you'll like Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder.

Me personally, I stopped caring after Nymphetamine. There's a couple songs I like on that album(like Gilded Cunt), but it just didn't strike me like the other albums did. I pretty much hated Thornography, and while Godspeed had some alright tracks, it felt rather lackluster.

I also saw them following the release of Thornography, and their stage show was so much less than what is usually expected. That and I couldn't help but feel Dani Filth looked like the kid who just won a competition to play a full gig with his favorite band. It was odd.

ps, where do you cats download metal tunes from? I seriously need to update the library.
Whenever I need something, I use torrents, but most of the time I buy the CD. Depending who it is I might download first.

SPEAKING OF NEW METAL, the new Between the Buried and Me is amazing. I've been listening to it the last three days. It's not Colors, but it's on it's level. I liked The Great Misdirect, but it felt like less focus and effort was put into it. This album has all that focus, and it creates a much better listening experience because of it.
