Saw Edguy today

Fanfuckingtastic! Tobias is so charismatic and funny
The set was weird. They avoided a couple of massive songs and sang some off ones. No Tears Of A Mandrake, which was insane to me. No Sacrifice either.

Dead Or Rock
Speedhoven
Nine Lives
Until We Rise Again
The Pharoh
Drum Solo
Pride Of Creation
Ministry Of Saints (He REALLY has an issue with the lyrics, bless him)
Headless Game
Save Me
Superheroes
Out Of Control
Lavatory Love Machine
King Of Fools

Feel like i've missed a song or two.

I love how he comes out in Dudley and goes HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SCOTLAAAAAAAAAAAAND! Hahaha I kid, I know this is DUDLEY ENGLAND!!!!!....
At the end of Pharoh he made everyone shut up and kept saying NO IT'S MY FUCKING SHOW ILL DO THE LAST OOH. Then when everyone finally stopped he goes 'Ooh...THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!'

Have any of you guys heard of a group called Skyclad. They are kind of the proto-folk metal group. (Along with Bathory I would say). Anyway, I was on a road trip the other day and I was listening to a fair bit of folk metal and I must say they are rather cool. They have clever lyrics as well. It isn't Nabokov clever, but for metal they are rather clever with word play.

My favorites from 2008:

The Haunted - Versus
Scar Symmetry - Holographic Universe
Kingdom Of Sorrow - Kingdom Of Sorrow
Daylight Dies - Lost To The Living
Unearth - The March
Cavalera Conspiracy - Inflikted
The Acacia Strain - Continent
Volbeat - Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood

I liked the new Soulfly cd better than that Cavalera Conspiracy cd. A lot more, actually. I really liked that Haunted cd, too. Kingdom of Sorrow was alright, but I got tired of it pretty quick.

So my sister got me a ticket to Music As a Weapon on the 22nd of April. I had no clue it wasn't even going on, but it looks like fun. Apparently these guys will all be there:

Disturbed
Lacuna Coil
Chimaira
Killswitch

Disturbed put on a good show and I've heard good things about KSE's live show. Lacuna Coil are pretty cool and I used to really like chimaira so i'm excited about seeing them.

Dubya
February 5th, 2009, 11:04 PM
Lacuna Coil are TERRIBLE, espescially live. Why they have 2 singers is beyond me because one of them can't sing for shit and isn't a smoking hot chick like the other one.. he can't even try to compare.. he serves no purpose at all.

I've actually seen Disturbed 4 times and left early every time.. I always came to see the band before them, tried to stay and just couldn't.. and I actually enjoy their cds. I just think they're terrible live.

Killswitch and Chimaira are worth the ticket price by themselves, tho..

--

..been revisiting some old cd's lately. I've been stuck on The Oncoming Storm by Unearth and Malice and the Magnum Heart by Misery Signals. I've only taken one out of my car stereo to put the other one in for like the past week or so..

Speaking of Chimaira, they have a new album coming out this April entitled "The Infection". The clips I've heard sound very promising.

Dubya
February 5th, 2009, 11:24 PM
The single fact that Chimaira has a new cd coming out is promising. They never disappoint.. at least, I've never been disappointed with a Chimaira album/performance.

Mastodon has a new one in a couple months, too.. mmm.. Mastodon..

I will probably be going to the show on May 10th in Green Bay, WI.

I've seen Disturbed on the Music As A Weapon Tour III and thought they were very good. A big reason I would go is to see Killswitch Engage. Lacuna Coil and Chimaira should be ok.

I'm hoping some pretty good bands are added to the 2nd stage. I heard that one of the bands was going to be Trivium, but nothing has been confirmed. I would definitely go for sure then.

It should be pretty cool, with all the other stuff added this time, tatoo artists, extreme sports, etc.

I've always found Chimaira to be pretty generic. Not their biggest fan.

Dubya
February 5th, 2009, 11:33 PM
I'd honestly rather just see a cheap Killswitch show or a cheap Chimaira show, where they play for 90 minutes..

Going to see Lamb of God with As I Lay Dying, God Forbid, and .. someone .. in March

OH.. and Bury Your Dead (fuckin hell yeah) and Suicide Silence (gag me please) are heavily rumored to be on the 2nd stage for Music as a Weapon.

Chi of the Deftones is still in a coma, following a car wreck back in november. Get well, man. Please get well.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY..

Limp Bizkit is apparently re-uniting this summer .. with Wes? You'll just have to stay on the edge of your seat for that one..

That sucks about those two bands being added as I think they suck.

If Trivium is added, it'd still be worth it.

Plus, like I mentioned there is other stuff like video games and shit to do during the shit bands.

Dubya
February 5th, 2009, 11:42 PM
Yeah, a while back when they had the Nintendo Fusion Tour.. it was like Lostprophets, Anberlin (only 2 reasons I went), Story of the Year, and MCR.. and they had like 10 video game booths set up in the bar area of the venue.. I played games the whole time MCR and Story of the Year were playing. It was awesome. Lostprophets killed that crowd.

Oh and Bury Your Dead have gotten A LOT better on their new cd. They have definitely found their sound with their new singer. I didn't like most of their old stuff, sans a few songs, but I was stuck on their new cd for a month or so after my friend forced me to listen to it. If you feel like giving them a 2nd chance, you should.. cuz this cd doesn't disappoint.

From the arcticle I read on theprp.com .. they're apparently throwing tons of money at Wes to try and get him to re-join the band for some summer festivals .. and maybe more? I don't think he should, to be honest. I mean.. it's not Limp Bizkit without him, but he's better off without them.. Black Light Burns' debut cd was pretty fuckin' good .. I thot so anyway.. actually I thot it was pretty badass .. and I'd much rather hear a new BLB cd than a new LB cd.

The second stage of Music as a Weapon IV as been announced:

Suicide Silence (joins March 29)
Spineshank
Crooked-X
Bury Your Dead (joins March 31)
Born of Osiris (March 20 - March 28)
After the Burial (March 20 - March 28)
Battle of the Bands winner

Pretty happy to see Spineshank in the lineup since I didn't even know they got back together and they were one of my favorite bands.

Dubya
February 14th, 2009, 12:45 AM
Ugh.. I liked pretty much every Silent Civilian song about 3209840392840923 times more than any SpineShank song. Suicide Silence is terrible.. love the new Bury Your Dead, but not the old.. After the Burial is pretty good.. never heard of Crooked-X or Born of Osiris (cool name) tho.

Today, I got tickets to Killswitch's off-date here in KC.. pretty awesome cuz it's Killswitch, Chimaira, and Lacuna Coil (blah) so I get to see a longer set by the 2 bands I really wanted to see from that tour.. its like 'wish: granted.'

Dubya
February 14th, 2009, 2:25 AM
They were a lot more organized than SpineShank. SpineShank, at least on the first 2 cds, had a pretty chaotic sound. Silent Civilian is just a good metal band with good melodies.

I've heard a few songs from the new Lamb of God CD and it sounds like the same old shit. I enjoyed Laid to Rest back in the day, but I thought Sacrament sucked. I've gotten tired of the religion bashing as well.

I downloaded Arch Enemy's Rise of the Tyrant again, since I lost the copy that I downloaded the first time. Great stuff. Their last three albums, Anthems of Rebellion, Doomsday Machine, and Rise of the Tyrant, have all been really good.

Dubya
February 18th, 2009, 12:31 AM
I never really thot Lamb of God was 'religion bashing' or anything like that. They're a pretty political band, really.. not so much religious.. that was always what I took from the music, anyway.

I read something about Ultraspank is apparently getting back together.. for anyone who knows who they are.. I always thot they were pretty good. One of those bands that just kinda faded away..

Also.. Nine Inch Nails are apparently touring with Jane's Addiction this year..

I'm a big loser and sent friend requests to all my favorite metal bands on MySpace. In Flames, Bodom, Trivium, Amon Amarth, and Arch Enemy are the bands I have as "friends" now.

After that I started get friend requests from bands I've never heard of and some of them are actually pretty good.

Dreamshade (2 songs) and A Cold Sleep (1 song) are two melodic death metal bands that sound pretty cool as does Theocracy which is a Christian progressive/power metal band.

Just thought I'd mention those. I'm pretty bored with what I'm listening to now, I'm looking for some new bands/stuff to listen to.

Edit: I bought Dreamshade's 5 song CD. I think it's really good. My only complaint that it's quite hard to understand what the singer is saying, but that can be said about most death metal bands. I've haven't been able to find the lyrics either. The music is really solid. They sound a bit like Children of Bodom, because they have a keyboardist as well. Good stuff.

I've been listening to a lot of power metal lately and really enjoying it. I'm allowed to listen to music at my internship and I've been listening to AOL Music's streaming power metal station. Been hearing some good stuff from the classic power metal bands, along with some bands I've never heard of. This includes Alestorm, which is a cool Scottish pirate metal band.

Going to the Music As A Weapon IV tour in Green Bay on Sunday. Really looking forward to seeing Killswitch Engage. Really bummed that Spineshank is leaving the tour two days before this show.

Edit: Concert review.

Second stage was free and outside. Bunch of local bands that were ok and Suicide Silence who sucks. The "booths" were pretty cool. I got my program signed by all the members of Chimaira.

Lacuna Coil was good. Woman singer is hot.

Chimaira was ok. Some great mosh pits.

Killswitch Engage was really good. They even did the "wall" that Lamb of God used to do which was really crazy.

Disturbed was good, like last year. During the last song, Draiman came out of a raising platform in the middle of the arena which was cool.

Good show, great crowd, worth the $40.

Saw Disturbed before they dropped their first album. They kicked ass back then. Don't think I'd really go to see 'em now though.

Saw Lacuna Coil when they were on tour w/ Opeth. Philly crowd anticipating Opeth and enduring Lacuna Coil - they didn't really give them a chance.

Chimaira I have not gotten to see...just "okay" is disappointing for me. But then again, so have their last couple of albums been.

Killswitch I got to see pre-End of Heartache, and they kicked ass back then. Dying to go see them again.

Finally got to see my holy grail - Lamb of God live with As I Lay Dying, God Forbid and Municipal Waste. Having not heard of MW, I was surprised...nice. God Forbid ruled. As I Lay Dying weren't half bad...and Lamb of God owned. As expected.

First show I've left bruised...sweet.

You guys.. the new Killswitch cd is like.. not as good as any of their previous albums. Quite a letdown, to be honest. I mean.. it's good, but.. I dunno.. for a while, it was like they were setting the pace.. everyone sounded or tried to sound like them.. now.. they just sound like everyone else.

The new Trivium and Unearth cds are so much better.. Trivium impresses me so much. The Crusade was a little bit left-field, but still very good. Shogun is a true return to the sound they had on Ascendancy and it's amazing from start to finish.

Well, now I'm gonna have to acquire the new Killswitch, dammit. The last album took me a few listens, but I've gotten heavily into it for one reason or another after a few listens.

Trivium = Ew. One of the guitarists doesn't even own any Sabbath. How can you be metal without owning any Sabbath?! Seriously, after I heard that I practically threw Ascendancy out of the window. Then they came out with the all-clean vocal album...yuck. They've been stained for me.

It's just one of those things for me... if I hadn't caught that interview on Fuse that particular day, I would probably still be listening to them. But it's like when you have a completely familiar brand totally change its packaging - kind of off-putting and you never really look at it the same way. They actually play here in KC frequently cuz Johnny Dare (local rock DJ) is a huge fan and good friends with them.. he sang a Journey cover with them on stage last time they were in town (a few weeks ago) and it was pretty sweet. KC loves Steel Panther for sure.

On another note, the new Shadows Fall cd, Retribution.. is pretty badass.

The band are working on the score alongside composer John Powell and the film's director, Jimmy Hayward. No further details were revealed. The film itself is the big screen adaptation of the titular comic book series and stars Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, John Malkovich and more. In addition to scoring the film, it has been revealed that Mastodon guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds will also make a cameo in the movie, which is set for a June 18th, 2010 release date.

DragonForce are terrible, all their songs sound the same. It's just one long riff of speed in which they stroke their egos 'cause they can play so fast. I was proud to be a metalhead when a crowd of thousands stood up and booed them off stage at Mayhem fest '08.

Dubya
October 24th, 2009, 5:21 PM
Dragonforce aren't terrible and their songs don't sound the same. They just have a lot of solos in them. None of their songs are just "one long riff of speed" .. all their songs have like 10 different riffs or so in them. It's not about playing fast, its about playing that technical that fast, which they do. They play shit at crazy speeds that most people couldn't even play at a normal speed.

Never seen them live, so I can't really comment on that .. They're definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but I think they're pretty good.

Tempest
October 24th, 2009, 5:26 PM
Their songs absolutely do sound very similar if not the same. But that's a problem with a lot of power metal bands.

They aren't great by any means. I like their leads voice, but they are pretty shitty. When I saw them live I found them fairly fun performance wise because they were so ridiculous, but ultimately boring musically.

Dubya
October 24th, 2009, 5:35 PM
How can you say they're boring musically? There are crazy solos and riffs flying all over the place. If anything, the music is too frantic cuz it is so all over the place. I don't really think their songs sound the same, other than that's the style they play .. lots of solos and riffs .. but every band has a style that they somewhat conform to. All of most bands songs sound fairly simliar.

A band like Killswitch, whom everyone seems to love .. has like 2 styles of songs .. fast and pummeling with a break down in the middle-towards end or slow with pretty guitars and paced-out drums.

Tempest
October 24th, 2009, 5:38 PM
Because there is literally no substance to it at all. I couldn't give a rats arse if they can play crazy fast when it all ends up blending into one. Symphony X have some really fast guitar work, but they have no such issue.

Whilst bands have their own style, there's definitely a difference between songs having a similar tone and feel and songs that just are interchangeable. Like I said, that's a problem with a lot of other bands too, but Dragonforce are more popular than them, so I take more issue I guess.

Dubya
October 24th, 2009, 5:41 PM
To each his own, I suppose .. I still think that most all metal bands tend to have a style that they stick to and you could interchange a lot of their songs and all you would have are different lyrics. I even like a lot of those bands, but I think most metal bands are guilty of that. There are exceptions though.

Hero!
October 24th, 2009, 5:41 PM
Symphony X are a perfect example of a bad who can play fast, while not sounding monotonous.

Dragonforce are decent if you're listening to one song, but trying to listen to an entire album is known to put people to sleep.

Tempest
October 24th, 2009, 5:44 PM
I just think there's a difference between similarities of style and similarities of everything someone does :p

I do like Starfire though. I can actually listen to a few tracks on the first album now and then, but only a few.

Live, I thought they managed to stumble over that line between funny cocky banter with the crowd and being arrogant obnoxious bellends with them. I actually didn't mind them at that point and really struggled to know what song they were playing at times, which kind of is a strong force behind how I feel about their songs sounding the same.

Dubya
October 24th, 2009, 5:44 PM
Pssh .. Sym X don't play as fast as D.Force

Lol.

..they are pretty awesome, though.

Tempest
October 24th, 2009, 5:45 PM
Because Symphony X like to put a bit of depth into their music here and there ;)

I'd find a 24 minute long Dragonforce song quite funny. I'd give it about 12 minutes before they just started playing the theme tune to Rhubarb & Custard and farting over the top of it.

I like to think of Dragonforce as if I was trying to tap a nail in with a hammer. Sure the first few times it's ace to weild and hit something, but the repetition starts to get to you after a bit no matter how cool/fast something can be done. Fast can be as bad as slow if there's little variation. And frankly I feel that Dragonforce hasn't learnt how to play music if they're always playing music since they don't use the lack of music properly. There's two things you need to master in audio. The sound, and the lack of sound. Dragonforce can only be half as good as any band which knows how to use the later.

I find little greatness in a band which is technically proficient yet lacking in emotion.

It's a thing I hate about black metals in general as well, too fast, too growly and no actual emotion or variation.

At least Dream Theater will give me some variety to let me rest within some songs while Dragonforce feel like they're shoving all their notes into the back of my head with an axe. No I don't want to run a musical marathon, I want a nice leisurely trip, perhaps with a bit of glam metal gay skipping as well. But I don't need to run myself into the ground (as dragonforce does tire me out physically) until I feel sick.

They were pretty popular before Guitar Hero. Managing to tour Australia off the back of the success of "Through The Fire and the Flames" which actually managed to enter the US billboard 100.

They also managed to sign to Roadrunner before Guitar Hero.

From what I REMEMBER Dragonforce became big through internet forums and nerds. They started to get known in metal circles long before Inhuman Rampage. It was Valley of the Damned and the period around 2004 where most of the buzz around them started IMO. The whole FASTEST BAND ALIVE !!! stuff and by that stage they were getting major festival spots and touring internationally.

Guitar hero has certainly made them bigger but they were big for a metal group before hand.

I was more or less kidding. I believe I heard of the band before their song was included in Guitar Hero.

I just say that after looking at some facts:

Following the inclusion of "Through the Fire and Flames" in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, sales of DragonForce CDs increased in one week by 126%.

Digital sales of the song increased from 2,000 per week to 10,000 per week almost immediately after the game's release, and almost reached 40,000 per week by the end of 2007.

The Fantomas album Delirium Cordia is just one track and its about 80 minutes. There are quite a number of albums that just have one track.

The Odyssey by Symphony X and Octavarium by Dream Theater both clock in about the 24 minute mark and they are actual stand alone songs.

Meshuggah's Catch 33 album is just one song, about 64 minutes long, IIRC. They've also got the song "I" which is a 21 minute epic.

Edge of Sanity's Crimson is one track and is like 45 mins long.

But 100% awesome at the same time. And features a guest appearance by Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth.

Good stuff...

I guess no one has mentioned the American Carnage tour coming up in January. Slayer, Megadeth, and Testament! Best group tour since Clash of the Titans. This is an arena tour with a video screen for Megadeth and pyro for Slayer.

Well, I found out you are correct, sir. That's interesting.

If guitarist King writes a good song, Araya puts his beliefs aside, "I'm not one that's going to go, 'This sucks because it's contrary to my beliefs.' To me it's more like 'this is really good stuff.

In an interview, Araya believes that "...Christ came and taught us about love, about doing unto others. That was his preach: Accept each other for who we are. Live peacefully, and love one another." When asked if he believed in God, replied "I believe in a supreme being, yeah. But He's an all-loving God." Araya explained that he has a "really strong belief system," and Slayer's words and images will "never interfere with what I believe and how I feel.... People are not in good shape to where they have to question their own belief system because of a book or a story somebody wrote, or a Slayer song." Tom Araya also appeared in Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, and was asked about his religious background, to which he commented "Catholic." He was also asked "God Hates Us All, How does it fit in?" To which Araya replied "God doesn't hate. [But] it's a great fucking title."

Yeah, Slayers lyrical style is more of a narrative than anything else. Their lyrical style is more along the lines of Cannibal Corpse in that they consider themselves creating art, rather than bands like Morbid Angel or Diecede whom are preaching beliefs. Even in songs like Antichrist and Hate Worldwide, which seem blasphemous and kind of are really, but they are actually about something.

I wear Slayer and Testament shirts with pentagrams on it sometimes, but I don't really think anything of it. I still have most of the shirts from when I was a kid, and I frequently buy vintage metal t-shirts. If anyone has a problem with it, I usually tell them something like, "this is a $150 shirt you are talking shit on". That usually takes care of any argument. I can separate entertainment and religion(and fashion). Heavy metal is more along the lines of the horror genre of the music world. Listening to a band like Kreator or Six Feet Under and watching a movie like Halloween pretty much fall into the same boat for me. It's art, it's creativity.

It's really just of a thing of these bands were compared to each other and were competing for the spotlight back in the day. Today, it's more like they are realizing who their peers are once again. It's something like their old feuds and arguments aren't relevant anymore.

About Mustaine, he has one of those personalities that just rub people the wrong way. I have a friend like that. Every single word out of his mouth irks you. No matter how cool they try to be, it just comes out the wrong way. He's not a bad guy. Some people just have douchie personalities. I wouldn't judge someone's music based on their personality though.

Aussie_Outlaw

John Bush, Tom and Jeff from Slayer, Rob from Metallica, Marty Freidman, and everyone from Testament are all super great guys are all some of the coolest dudes in the world. I've met all these guys several times over.

Edit: forgot about Charlie Benante from Anthrax is way cool as well. He's a big comic book guy and knows way more than I do about comics.

This is one of the bands my coworker is in. They just uploaded a new, and probably their best, song. It's called "Your tits are on stilts" and it kicks some ass.

And just for fun, here's his other band. This one is the band I prefer, but Hooker in The Morgue seem to be getting better and are playing a show with The Acacia Strain next month. I'd love it if either of these guys got some exposure as it'd be nice to see some Death Metal from CT make it big (well, as big as death/grindcore band can, that is).
