I found the new Cavalera Conspiracy cd on isohunt last night. It's fuckin' awesome. It's a good mix of old and new school metal. "terrorize" is my favorite track, so far.

I have been huge into French death metal lately. I love the way these bands take the black/death template and throw in this really great My Bloody Valentine influence.
Right now I'm looking for something that is heavier than Alcest (who are really more of a post-rock outfit along the lines of Jesu or Caspian) but not as heavy as Eikenskaden (who are basically death metal with a screaming vocalist instead of a growler, but covered up by layers and layers of blissed-out fuzz). Something that falls between the two would be exactly what I'm looking for.
If anyone can help a brotha out, it would be much appreciated.

Jesus, Symphony X BLEW me away.
I figured it'd be a good gig but I really didn't expect it to be tnat good. I was oddly shocked at how good of a showman Allen is. I figured he'd be quite quiet, but he was brilliant, as was his vocals
The PERFECT encore aswell: Immigrant song, into Eve Of Seduction, OUT OF THE ASHES and then Sins And Shadows.
I spazzed out and then some to say the least

It's Allen's favourite band and he had a rather spiffing Zeppelin t-shirt on, so it wasn't that much of a shock when they belted it out.

So I have gone vinyl mad lately. Thanks to the weak US dollar it is about a thousand times cheaper for me to buy records from the states and bring them into Australia.
Anyways, I just ordered some Isis, Cult of Luna, Explosions in the sky, Jesu/Eluvium split and Daughters.
The trick is to get the records from the labels because they tend to be cheaper and they toss in free stuff sometimes.
I also seriously regret not paying the 100 dollars the guy was asking for on Ebay for the pressing of Agalloch's the mantle. Oh well that will be one to watch out for in future.

Hopefully Oceanic. that album more than anything.
If you got The Mantle on vinyl it would be worth so, so much in a few years I'm guessing. Agalloch usually don't usually put a lot of stuff out there. $100 seems like a steal to me.
I don't think I've ever heard a vinyl. The youth of today, eh?

ATSS was really just Lex and Jon, I think. I'm not a huge fan of them; it's pretty much grindcore-by-numbers. I never thought Lex was all that good at screaming, to be honest. I'm really glad he's doing the Nick Cave-meets-Elvis thing now.

So. I know NOTHING about metal. I'm a big fan of indie rock and underground rap. And I'm rapidly running out of good material to listen to. Can anyone tell me, what is the Spoon of metal? Or the J Dilla? I mean, does metal have an equivalent? Is there something between metal and pop?
I've listened to a little Agalloch and they're OK, for what they are, but does anyone have some recommendations for a metal-illiterate?

Isis, Mastodon & Agalloch. They're all you'll ever need.
Otherwise it's hard to say though, because I don't know what you're into. I'd struggle to think of the 'Spoon' or 'Dilla' of Metal. Like, what would you be looking for? What kind of vocals? guitars? lyrics? themes? etc.

Well, like the SATs where they say ambiguous is to certain as dichotomous is to straight-forward. Spoon is to the Fall Out Boy as _____ good metal band is to ______ popular metal band? Does that make sense? Like I said, I have no bearing on metal whatsoever. I like Agalloch, I've listened to a little Pantera and Misfits/Danzig and Black Sabbath. I'll have to give Isis and Mastodon a listen. Anything else?
Like, if I were to say, what are the best rock and roll bands ever, and you said the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Radiohead, what are the metal allegories for those bands?

Yeah, as outlaw said it would depend on the genre. For every good metal group there are about 20,00 terrible ones.
For early metal its hard to go past Helloween and Blind Guardians early stuff for nerdy typical metal. However, thats not always for everyones taste. I still love it because I like very fast guitars.
Also there are the german thrash metal groups (Sodom, Celtic Frost, Bathory and Mekong Delta) those are pretty good. Death metal in the early days was a genre worth having a look at. Death (the group) is especially worthwhile. Black metal was always a bit silly til it started to move more folky elements in (agalloch) although if you do like agalloch you probably should have a look at the black metal genre. It started with the german metal groups like your Celtic Frosts and Bathory which was all well and good. It takes a turn for the silly with the Norwegian group led secondwave with the antics of Mayhem, Burzum and Darkthrone with players of the scene burning down churches and murdering each other. What crazy nerds. Most of the songs from these groups are either about nazis, religion sucking, or the shit crazy paganism that they followed.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_metal#Historical_events_in_black_metal ahaha still makes me laugh.
The modern wave of black metal is pretty good though.
Orphaned Land- "Mabool (folky-death metal with an obvious middle eastern twist- They are from Israel after all), Forest Steam "Tears Of Mortal Solitude" (black metal with a very slow melodic structure. The most depressing music I have ever heard), Nevermore- "This Godless Endeavor" (Trash metal with power metal influences with a pinch of death in places), Cult of Luna "Somewhere Along The Highway" (doomy, sludgey metal) are all albums released in the last few years that are rather fucking awesome and from a pretty diverse range of metal.

Well thanks, I'll keep those names in mind. When I decided I wanted to give jazz a try, it took me about six months of tracking down Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, etc albums, I might as well give metal the same rundown.
It seems to me that if there are so many metal fans who are so gung-ho about the genre, I should give it a shot.

We're all gung ho about different areas.
If you want a quick rundown of the "major acts" who are highly listenable you may as well cover
Thrash
Metallica - early (Puppets, Ride, Kill, Black, S&M)
Megadeth - (Rust in Peace, Countdown, Youthanasia)
Anthrax (1993 onwards especially; more Hard Rock I guess)
Pantera (Vulgar Display, Cowboys)
Heavy
Iron Maiden (Number of the beast, Powerslave, Piece of Mind)
Judas Priest (British Steel, Ram it down)
Bruce Dickinson (The Chemical Wedding)
Power
Blind Guardian (Imaginations, Nightfall)
Edguy (Mandrake, Rocket Ride, Hellfire)
Nightwish (Once, Century Child)
Avantasia (The Metal Opera)
Progressive
Dream Theater (Awake, Train of Thought)
Porcupine Tree ( In Absentia, Deadwing)
Queensryche (Operation Mindcrime, Empire, Promised Land)
Symphony X (V: New Mythology Suite)
Glam/Hair
Motley Crue (Greatest Hits, Dr Feelgood)
Guns N Roses (Appetite for Destruction)
Dokken ( Back for The Attack)
Poison (Greatest Hits)
Melodic Death
In Flames - (Whoracle, Colony, Clayman, Jester Race)
Soilwork (Natural Born Chaos, Figure Number Five)
Children of Bodom (Something Wild, Follow the Reaper)
I should probably throw an Opeth album in there and Nevermore's Dead Heart but everything listed there is phenomenal.

Children of Bodom's album Follow the Reaper and Hatecrew Deathroll are a good intro to heavier stuff...it has happy keyboards and guitars and death vocals. I wouldn't listen to the latest stuff though, imo it's shit.

I have an iPod now which has a ridiculous amount of space that I need to fill. Good excuse to find some new music. It's been a while since I actively looked for new bands to listen to so it would be nice to spend a few weeks listening to some new stuff. I'm looking at people like Ringo and Cash here since they seem to have similar tastes.
Favourite bands: Agalloch, Cult of Luna, Isis, Woods of Ypres, Porcupine Tree, Winds, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, 65daysofstatic, Explosions in the Sky, Drudkh, Mogwai, Emperor, Ulver... etc. You get the idea.
I guess I'm looking for more obscure stuff since I know most of the biggest bands in the scene. I've been looking at a few labels like Avantgarde Music to see if I can spot anything I like but a nudge in the direction of a few cool bands/labels would be top. Doesn't have to be strictly metal, just posting here since it's where I'm most likely to get the best results. Metallica's 2 new songs in perfect quality if you haven't heard them. Actually not bad, miles ahead of the "St. Anger" album. If the whole new album is like this, then I can't wait. The first half-way-decent Metallica since 1991.

Bodom's new stuff is shit to my ears, not liking it at all. I've managed to get through the new In Flames, but I imagine it coming off a bit dull live. The two opening bands I could never get into and never wanted to. It's a shame, Gigantour is rolling through Winnipeg as well, but I have no desire to go. I loved seeing Bodom right after HCD came out though.
I like new Children of Bodom album, it's the new In Flames' album I don't like. Plus they are playing like 3 songs from their new album in their set, In Flames that is.
I don't care about High on Fire or Job for a Cowboy at all. Not looking forward to sitting through them.

Any post-rock or anything is cool.
Try Red Sparowes, the Mars Volta, High On Fire, Pelican, This Will Destroy You.
I'll be seeing the Cavalera Conspiracy at the Astoria in June. Thought about seeing Dio there too but I have other things going on at the end of May.

Damn, I knew CoB had a new album, but In Flames, too? Shit, I need to keep up with music again. :$
I saw Job For a Cowboy when they toured with Behemoth (fucking awesome band, BTW). And I like Knee Deep and, to a lesser extent, Entombment of a Machine, but good god, they fucking suck live. Their vocalist sounds like a 6-year-old girl when he screams, and they had some annoying Powerpoint presentation for a background...I guess it was supposed to be edgy, but it just all ended up being really fucking annoying.
At least you'll enjoy the spectacle, though. It's kind of funny, I guess.

Like I mentioned, I went to the show last night.
High on Fire and Job for a Cowboy sucked. I couldn't wait for them to be done. Everyone was pretty much bored. All the songs sounded the same and you couldn't make out any of the words (especially Job).
Each band only had a picture in the background with their name.
Children of Bodom was awesome, too bad they only got 8 songs.
In Flames was awesome as well. They had some cool lights set up in these two walls they put up and were probably the best of the night. The crowd was probably most into them.
Megadeth was really good, but the microphone seemed to be fucked up. We couldn't hear a lot of what Dave was singing, but maybe it was him.
Overall, it was a really good show for my first metal concert. It was worth it, probably spent about $200 total and 3 hours of driving.
The new In Flames album isn't that good.

Saw Queensryche last week - Was a bit disappointed to be honest.
Seated metal gigs just don't work for me. I thought it really killed the atmosphere and wasn't a patch on the crowd I saw them with first (...Worst part being I recognised most of the people there from the time before!)
Boy Tate is hanging on to his voice. He could do with ending this full Mindcrime tour. He's fine on the newer stuff, but at times it honestly sounded like he'd hit a note and that'd be the end of it. He still sounded good, don't get me wrong. But it was a strain. Wasn't so impressed when he was clearly miming a bit of the chorus in Empire.
Pamela was so much better than the last time at least.
They looked utterly pissed off with each other all night I thought. Seemed like they'd just had a massive row.
Also, has anyone heard this Revolution Renaissance stuff? I'm quite liking it. But I always like it when Michael Kiske puts down his glass of poor wine and takes off his beret to sing a bit of the ole' metal.

Michael Kiske is not only overrated as a metal vocalist but almost everything he has touched has turned to shit.
How many good albums has he sung on as a lead vocalist... Two Helloween albums he had no impact on besides writing like one song and three lyrics. What a stand out career!

I'm listening to a heap of neofolk lately. Sol Invictus are pretty cool, Agalloch do a fucking awesome cover of "Kneel To The Cross"
You listed most of your big name groups, but I should point out that I am really listening to a lot of Ulver and at this point in time Agalloch is my favourite band. I really like anything that is kind of folky.
Both Nest and Empyrium are both pretty cool groups you should be able to get/download albums of easily enough.
Also, Forest Stream while a little more black metal is damn fine music, one of the best finds I had on the old metal torrents... that and Orphaned Land.

Austrian Death Machine - Total Brutal
(tim from As I Lay Dying's side band.. I believe the singer from Rembering Never does the vocals. killer metal music with Arnold Swarzeneggar dubs throughout the album.. each track title is taken from one of his movies)
http://www.smnnews.com/WP/wp-content/australian-death-machine.gif
It's funny because the songs are clearly jokes, but they actually come out pretty good.. I kinda thought it was a waste of some good metal at first with all the Arnold stuff, but it's really growing on me. Good stuff. Sounds like As I Lay Dying with the singer from Remembering Never.. singing about Arnold movies.. in a nutshell.

(1:39 PM PST 05/31/2008)
Wes Borland (Black Light Burns, ex-Limp Bizkit) has joined Marilyn Manson as their guitarist. Speaking on his addition, Marilyn Manson himself had the following to say:
"We have a new guitar player that's gonna play for the first time tomorrow; it's the first time we'll play on stage. His name is Wes Borland and he used to be in a really terrible band that he left because he felt that it was a destructive force in art, and he has his own band, Black Light Burns, but now he is in Marilyn Manson. We don't know how permanent that is, but starting tomorrow will be the first step. So this will be the most indestructible Marilyn Manson."
Borland himself had the following to offer on the matter:
"I am joining MM for the time being, but as I said before, Black Light Burns is still going strong and I have no problem operating in 2 bands. MM is playing a show here in Korea, where I am now, in about 8 hours and then I'm on the way back home to start doing some guitars with Nick on the next BLB record."

Cool for that dude if he likes Suicide Silence, but I think they're fuckin' terrible. I can't stand the cookie monster vocals. Machine Head, on the other hand, could very easily steal that show. They're a fuckin' awesome live band. I saw them blow Trivium, Lamb of God, and Gojira off the stage in one night. Great band. Cool guys. Yeah, and it could potentially really help Marilyn Manson if he actually gets to work on an album instead of just being a touring guitarist. Borland is a really creative guitarist. I loved the first Black Light Burns album and the new covers cd has a lot of great covers of songs that most bands wouldn't cover and he uses really old vintage recording equipment to make the album sound a little more like it was actually recorded during the times of the songs, as most of them are older songs. Plus, Manson really needs someone to come in and lay down some killer guitars cuz its just not that good without John 5 on guitar. Borland isn't John 5 by any means, but he's a suitable replacement.

Lost my voice and my neck hurts pretty damn bad, but Mayhem fest was awesome.
I caught a bit of The Walls of Jericho's set, man Candace sounds awesome live, but I only watched for a little while, had to get in close as possible for MASTODON.
Got there and saw Mastodon, who fucking rocked, but the crowd SUCKED. they went on waaay too early, IMO, and it felt like no one in the crowd over at the main stage really cared aside from me and this one group of dudes who were all singing along and went fucking nuts went they started playing March of The Fire Ants.
After Mastodon I went over to the Jagermeister stage which was right next to the Hot Topic stage that Underoath was playing on while they set up for Machine Head and the whole time UnderOath was on everyone in the crowd at the Jagermeister stage was chanting "We want Head" so loud that you could barely hear Underoath (which is a good thing).
Machine Head fucking kicked ass. Robb was cool as shit and kept throwing full cups of beer into the crowd which had become just one giant pit. The only thing that sucked was that too many people were busy moshing and only I and a handful of others around me were really singing along to anything other than Davidian.
After that I walked back over to the main stage where Draggonforce was finishing up their set (they went on earlier than they were supposed to) with Through the Fire and the Flames. They sounded terrible. After a half hour break Disturbed came on and fucking owned the place. I'm not kidding when I say that David Draiman had the crowd in the palm of his hand. Every song, pretty much everyone sang along and Disturbed sounded great. Good fun right there.
Slipknot was cool too. Nice stage show, they sounded pretty cool, but the crowd was beat after Disturbed. Still good fun, little ticked that they didn't play wait & Bleed, I've always wanted to hear that one live. Oh well.
All in all, good time.

I've always liked Slipknot. I think all 3 of their cds are great, each for different reasons. I like how raw the debut is, and then I like how they really took that rawness and channelled it on the second cd, into something totally different.. yet quite similar. The 3rd one threw me for a loop at first, I think it was mainly just the spotless production. It just sounded to clean to be Slipknot. It's an amazing cd, but it just doesn't have that raw, dark feel.. that the other 2 have. I hope the new one is great and look forward to seeing them whenever they come through KC. I've seen them like 7 times probably. They always tour with good bands, so it makes for a good show.

I like Vol. 3 the most. The self titled on is good for the Raw power of it, but I found IOWA kind of boring. All Hope is Gone should be good based off the 2 songs they already released.

I saw Slipknot play a show @ the Bottleneck in Lawrence w. Kittie before they blew up.. it was crazy cuz it's not a big place (maybe 500 or so..) just historic (in that pretty much every band in the world has played there) and small. Anyway.. there's 9 guys on this tiny ass stage. It was funny. I remember the drummer headbutted his crash symbal and ended up busting his skull open. He mustve hit it just right or something cuz he was bleeding a lot. He just kept playing, tho. I guess it was towards the end of the show.. but still..

Ya know what band everyone else seems to love, but I just don't get..
The Blood Brothers.
Seen them twice, once with Eighteen Visions and Underoath and then again with Coheed and Dredg.. I have no idea why they were at the Coheed show, but it was the worst 45 minutes of my life. Thank god Dredg and Coheed had utterly amazing shows.
They used to be just a good, weird grindcore band, but got progressively No Wave-ier as time went on. You might like some of their early stuff if you're into weird grindcore.

I'm so sad that the tour with them, NFG and ADTR isn't coming to Indiana at all. Actually a lot of bands skip Indiana and I don't blame them.
The only time I really see the bands I like is at Warped or just somehow they randomly play a show here..and then they never come back.

It wasn't so much the music as it was the vocals for me.. I didn't understand why they had 2 singers if they both just scream their heads off, completely incoherently.. Granted, the album may be better than the show.. I was just really annoyed with the singers. I could barely hear the music over them. I dunno, I just wasn't really diggin' it when I saw them. I like a lot of weird shit, but I just couldn't get into Blood Brothers.
On another note, the new Human Abstract cd is.. good, but not as good as the first. You can really tell that the main guitar player left. It's a good cd, it's just not as.. adventurous as the first one.

In addition, the band turned down the opportunity to tour with Metallica in order to keep the album on schedule.

Balls.
This doesn't appear to be the case. I checked the Metallica dates on Ticketmaster. Each show has The Sword supporting; while Down, Lamb of God, and Machine Head each tour with Metallica for about a month.
The Milwaukee date has Machine Head supporting. This makes me even more excited for the concert. Though I would have liked to see Lamb of God just as much. Glad it's not one of the early dates with Down.

Bury Your Dead's new cd is a lot different than all of their other cds. They added actual singing to the music and actual melody and it .. actually sounds good. Really good, I think. It's still brutal, but some of it is quite melody-based and some of it has a nice groove to it. It's not just straight ahead Hatebreed-style hardcore like they were doing on the other cds. They have a new singer and he can actually sing. He's still got the hardcore scream and bark down, but he knows how to sing decently, too.. kinda reminds me of Unearth's The Oncoming Storm cd with some of the vocals. It's really a lot better than their first 3 cds and quite a bit different.

I would like to take that statement back. After listening to it in my car, with proper stereo sound, it's quite amazing. Of the 10 songs on the cd, I'd say that 6 are fuckin' awesome, while 2 are decent and 2 are kinda shit. I really like, 'The Unforgiven III' a lot. The instrumental track is like a giant riff salad and easily the standout of the album.

I'd have to agree with that. That Was Just Your Life and Judas Kiss are definately skippable. My apocolypse and The End of The Line are tolerable but I still find myself skipping them. From Track 3 to 7 is just badass. The Unforgiven III is probably my favorite followed by All Nightmare Long. Suicide and Redemption has some great moments in it. The album is awesome to cruise around with. Definately going to go see them in Concert now. Getting my tickets the 13th.

Never got the Trivium hype. All the fans I've seen in my city have Trivium hoodies and hang out with their acne at the mall. I had to sit through them at some festival this summer and literally fell asleep on the grass. If I had been given an unlabelled cd at first maybe I'd dig it, but their image has been corrupted by the sort of people that go to their concerts in my city.
The new Metallica would be pretty swell if it trimmed the fat from some songs. Only listened to it straight through once.
Saw Immortal and Gorgoroth this summer...I don't like black metal on cd but it was pretty hilarious to see Gaahl shrieking like a 10 year old girl amidst naked crucified people and bloody animal heads.

Usually, I'll let her listen to whatever cuz I don't really care that much.. I like everything but country and techno, to be honest. Anyway, sometimes I wanna listen to what I wanna listen to and I wanna listen to metal and everytime she's in the car when I do it.. the baby goes nuts apparently. :D Makes me smile. She's gonna be a little metal head. Tonight it was Metallica, and I went around the block to finish so I could finish the song. I told my gf that I was bonding with the baby. Over the weekend, I was listening to Trivium .. last week, it was Atreyu (not really metal, but still..), and a couple weeks ago it was Killswitch. Just wait, man...my baby girl used to do (well, she still does when prompted, but she used to do it out of the blue) a death metal growl that had me rolling. My little boy has started being corrupted - he loved Kiss a year or two ago, and only wants to listen to "daddy's music" (my wife listens to the rap/r&b stuff that I can't stand). Within reason, he gets just that.

It has to have some groove to it and it has to be at least somewhat catchy or she prolly won't give a shit.. that shouldn't be that hard, tho. I think I can eventually get her into some Trivium and Bullet for My Valentine, maybe some Atreyu.. stuff like that. I don't expect to get her listening to Mastodon or anything like that.. tho, it would be fuckin' hot.

Deftones Bassist In A Coma Pt. 2 - wookubus (wookubus@theprp.com)
(4:58 PM MST 11/04/2008)
Deftones bassist Chi Cheng is currently in a coma following a car crash in Santa Clara, CA yesterday. Initial details are sketchy, but band frontman Chino Moreno has confirmed the situation to the "The Sacramento Bee", who have more details available here (http://www.sacbee.com/1089/story/1370452.html). Band frontman Chino Moreno has now made a formal statement on the situation, saying:
"It deeply saddens me to inform you all that our brother Chi Cheng was involved in a terrible car accident last night. He is currently in a Northern California Hospital in serious, but stable condition. I am on my way up North right now to be by his side along with the rest of our band mates and family. Chi is one of the strongest people I know, and I'm praying that his strength will get him through this. Please say a prayer for him as well.

An Update On Chi - wookubus (wookubus@theprp.com)
(2:00 PM MST 11/06/2008)
Deftones frontman Chino Moreno has checked in with another update regarding the condition of band bassist Chi Cheng, who is currently said to be in a coma following a car accident earlier this week. Here's what Moreno had to say:
"Hello Everyone,
I am back from up North visiting our brother Cheng. His condition remains the same - serious, but stable. We, along with the entire Cheng family, would like to extend our gratitude to everyone that's said a prayer or sent out their positive thoughts to Chi. Your support means more than you know.
During his recovery process, Chi's mother has asked that each day we spread a little bit of good in his name. So each day Deftones will be posting what you can do to help Chi recover. Today, she has asked that you all remember to buckle your seat belts, and remind those you love to buckle up. By doing something so little in his name, you will be helping him find the strength to recover.
Thank you, and please check back daily.

The new Atreyu album is actually very un-screamo.
Really catchy stuff on it. If you haven't already, check it out. It's a new sound that I wasn't expecting.
Also did you hear Alter Bridge's latest album released late last year?

The new Atreyu cd took a couple listens to really click with me. I like a lot of it, but some of it.. I really don't. Won some pit passes (they take out the first 5 rows and let the radio winners chill there) to Family Values last summer and got to see them. Pretty crap show, tho. Atreyu, Trivium, and Droid were really the only good things about the show.. but I didn't have to pay.
I really like the new Alter Bridge cd. I didn't like the first one very much, but the new one has been in my cd player a lot. Some really good solos on that cd. Not very metal, but pretty badass. Tremonti is a killer guitar player. That's another band my soon-to-be-born daughter seems to like. :D

Well its not surprising! They are awesome. The number of times I've listened to the new Alter Bridge album is bordering on obsessive, I honestly don't think there's any track on that album I dislike! The melodies are really catchy too, they just stick in your mind and don't leave. I hadn't heard much of them till that album and now I can't get enough :p

Yea, I never really liked the first album to much.. but the new one is A LOT better. I hope Myles doesn't join Zeppelin for a while and tour cuz people seem to think that means that Stapp could get back with the guys for like one big ass tour.. I don't think they will, tho. I don't think there's enough money in the world for those guys to have to put up with Stapp's shit again. Myles is a weird choice for Zeppelin, tho. He has the voice and the range, no doubt.. but most people don't know who he is..

I have to be honest and say, like Slipknot, I was a big fan of Mudvayne back in the day when I used to like that shit.
But they've played the exact same shit since Lost and Found when they started to suck. Every song sounds the same from that point on - including their 2 new songs from the "new" album on their MySpace page.
Dubya
November 14th, 2008, 9:27 PM
I haven't actually listened to it yet. I enjoyed their first 2 cds a lot. The End of All Things to Come is probably one of my favorite cds. Lost and Found was decent, but not on the level of the other 2. I'll have to listen to the new one this weekend before I can say anything, tho. I was just posting it for anyone who wanted it.
EDIT: Yea, it's pretty terrible.
1. Fish Out of Water - pretty good song. heavier.. i like the frantic picking in the chorus. good way to start the cd.
2. Do What You Do - starts off really soft.. and never really picks up.. it just kinda goes in circles.. even the guitar solo is kinda 'blah'.
3. A New Game - a lot heavier than the first two, but it almost sounds forced.. like they're just playing fast becuz they weren't a second ago.. but it actually gets better as it slows down in the middle and towards the end. lyrics are pretty shit, tho.
4. Have it Your Way - this song is OK, but it just sounds like the first song, to be honest. i like the bass line in the chorus. again.. terrible lyrics. falls short of the song it sounds like.
5. A Cinderella Story - probably the best song on the cd. not too heavy, but not soft at all.. somewhere in the middle. catchy chorus, but not annoyingly catchy.. nice guitar riff and GOOD lyrics.
6. The Hate in Me - starts off pretty heavy and slows down to a groovy little metal number with some of the killer bass they're capable of, that's been missing from the other songs. Goes back and forth between fast heavy riffs and chunky groovy riffs. gets better as it goes along.
7. Scarlett Letters - a pretty weak, slow, string chorus to smooth heavy guitar-song. it has some nice guitars in it.. but the lyrics don't do the music justice.
8. Dull Boy - the 'not so new' track. still a great song, tho. a welcome addition, as it's better than most of the actual new songs.
9. Same Ol? - boring, chugga-chugga guitar riff song that just goes in circles through the entire song. Boring, boring, boring.
10. Never Enough - easily the worst song they've ever made. it's like that 'world so cold' song on End of Things, but falls way short. this song is the most generic piece of crap they've ever made. this cd should've been called 'circles' cuz that's the only place most of these songs are going.
11. We the People - terrible. boring wannabe political-rant song about nothing, really. again.. just goes in circles.
I don't get it. Mudvayne was once a good band. They had crazy bass lines and chunky guitar riffs, laced with funky drum beats.. all being destroyed by the singer's raspy, but honest voice.. the first and second cds are great.. totally different, but a nicer studio can do that. This cd is terrible. There are only 3-4 songs worth listening to. I liked most of the last cd, even tho it was more radio-friendly. It was still heavy and had good lyrics and sounded like some time was spent on it. This cd sounds like it was made in 2 days. It sounds totally rushed. There's no substance to it at all. It's just generic, slow-to-fast chug riffs. They used to be so much better, which is what makes this cd so terrible. 1.5/5

Metallica are awesome live and have been on great form this year so you should enjoy it.
Their latest setlist was;
That Was Just Your Life
The End of The Line
Creeping Death
For Whom The Bell Tolls
One
Broken, Beat and Scarred
Cyanide
Sad But True
Until It Sleeps
No Remorse
The Day That Never Comes
Master of Puppets
Blackened
Nothing Else Matters
Enter Sandman
----
Die, Die My Darling
Stone Cold Crazy
Seek and Destroy
Yeah, they were excellent. Besides what I'm assuming were Death Magnetic songs that I wasn't familiar with, here's what they played:
Harvester of Sorrow
Until it Sleeps
One (pretty nice looking pyro during this one)
Enter Sandman
Nothing Else Matters
Sad But True
Ride the Lightning
Wherever I May Roam
Master of Puppets
Fight Fire With Fire
Last Caress
Motorbreath
Seek and Destroy
I wasn't sure going in whether I would like the concert or not, but I was thoroughly impressed with it all. The only bad thing was that I had to sit next to some guy who was doing air punches the ENTIRE TIME.
Danzig and Dimmu Borgir were awesome.
I could've sworn Hellhammer was there on drums, since it looked like him on stage, but I heard somewhere he had a neck injury. Anyway, it was nice seeing an awesome live show from Dimmu Borgir, since they had sound problems at Ozzfest a few years back and played for about 20 minutes. If their setlist would've only included Tormentor of Christian Souls and Blessings Upon the Throne of Tyranny, it would've been absolutely perfect.
Danzig wasn't bad at all. He seemed out of breath the whole time (maybe he should add some cardio to his workout regimen), but his voice sounded awesome. I'm not sure why his voice sounded so blown out on his last several albums, but he sounded perfect here. He played 2-3 songs from each album (except for 5, naturally), but only played one unreleased song, Satan's Crucifixion. Was kind of hoping to hear When Death Had No Name instead, but I digress. Excellent show. And Danzig is also going bald.
I wanted to see Moonspell that night, too, but I got voted down and we had some early drinks at a nearby bar instead.
And with it being Halloween night, I was dressed in a ninja costume. Walking past the smokers outside, I hear, "Power Ranger motherfucker! I'll kick your fucking ass!!" and I'm thinking it might be an interesting night. But everyone who approached me about my costume were really cool to talk with, and were kind of intrigued (really? Nobody dresses like a freaking ninja on Halloween?).
Just don't ever use a costume that involves duct tape on your arms and legs if you're really hairy. Fuck.

Fuck that mess. Any girl who is even remotely into hard rock should be listening to Queens of the Stone Age.
Kings would be too macho. The Kings of the Stone Age wear armor and have axes and wrestle. The Queens of the Stone Age hang out with the Kings of the Stone Age's girlfriends when they wrestle, and also it was a name given to us by Chris Goss. He gave us the name Queens of the Stone Age. Rock should be heavy enough for the boys and sweet enough for the girls. That way everyone's happy and it's more of a party. Kings of the Stone Age is too lopsided.

I also enjoyed the Opeth and Meshuggah upon first listen, but I'm not really overwhelmed by either anymore. Both decent albums though.

That Gojira cd is pretty badass, too.. not quite as good as their previous stuff, but still.. better than most other bands.
Other than those, I think Esoteric and Opeth are the only other ones I picked up.. never been a big Meshuggah fan.
Oh and Beer-Belly, I got her into QOTSA a while ago. She digs em' for the most part. She doesn't go for the long-tripped-out stuff as much as their quarky, bouncy songs. You got their Live in London DVD? I think I watched that DVD about 5-6 times before it left my DVD player.

Chi's Condition - wookubus (wookubus@theprp.com)
(3:47 PM MST 12/09/2008)
Deftones bassist Chi Cheng remains in a coma following a car accident early last month. The latest update on his condition from the Deftones camp can be found below:
"Chi remains in a coma, and as of this morning there's been no significant change in his condition. Last week he was moved out of the Intensive Care Unit and transferred to a brain rehabilitation hospital in Northern California. The hospital specializes in the care and management of traumatic and non-trauma related brain injuries with a team of highly skilled therapists, nurses and consultants. He's in great hands.
Please continue to pray for our brother, and thank you all for your love and support."

I know it's not metal, but there's no ramble thread in the music forum..
This shit is really sad.. I keep reading updates and nothing gets better. I grew up on deftones, man. Adrenaline was one of the first 10 cds I bought and I played the shit out of it. I've seen them live 6 times and every time it was different and awesome. I've met them twice (Abe actually remembered me. I couldn't believe it.) and chatted a couple of them up for a good hour once (Abe and Chi) and they're super-cool guys. I just really hope something happens and Chi gets better. It just doesn't sound good and it hasn't sounded good since it happened. Seriously, this just breaks my heart to read. I can't imagine what his family is going through. It's terrible. They just have to wait.. wait and see if he dies or lives.. and to have to wait this long.. that's absolutely horrible.

(4:38 PM MST 12/08/2008)
More details have been revealed for the second benefit show planned for Deftones bassist Chi Cheng, who is said to still be in a coma following a car crash early last month. The show, which will take place at Harlow's in Sacramento, CA on December 09th, will feature an impromptu set by Tinfed with Deftones drummer Abe Cunningham, Tim Mccord (The Revolution Smile and Evanescence) and more rounding out the bands line-up. Furthermore, DJ sets from Deftones sampler Frank Delgado and Team Sleep's DJ Crook are also on the bill, plus performances from Last Angels, Eightfourseven, Death Valley High and Will Haven - complete with a special appearance from their original frontman Grady Avenell. All proceeds from the show will go towards Cheng and his family.

Since I've been lurking - a few comments. I've badmouthed Deftones in the past, but since have become a major fan (thanks to a good friend of mine who doesn't belong to the boards), I saw them live in Philly, and they were awesome. They blew the hell out of me (considering I'd seen them at a non-impressive Ozzfest performance). I seriously am hoping for the best with Chi's condition. I need to see them again. Seriously.
Also Amon Armarth for best metal album of 08. Bar none. Except the Opeth and Bloodbath ablums. Then again, I'm ghey for Akerfeldt.

Anyone heard of Belphegor? I'm liking their latest one...bought it with an iTunes gift card from Christmas. They're the first band described as "blackened death metal" (a stupid label in the first place) that actually sounds like such. I like Behemoth, and to a lesser extent, Zyklon, but neither one of them fit the label anymore...just pure death metal to me. Anyway, they rule. And I always love a band with horribly stupid song titles, like Sexdictator Lucifer.
