Sorry to have a go, because you seem to like some good stuff, but what is there about Napalm that is even slightly likeable? Listening to them is like listening to a wall of noise.

It's something that quite a few people probably wouldn't like the first time around. For me, grindcore is just something you eventually progress to. I thought Napalm Death sounded like noise at first too, but I like them quite a bit now. Sometimes you'll find heavier stuff incorporated in albums you like, and that can help you enjoy the heavier side of metal a little more. It's just like how I thought blast beat drumming sounded mindless and disorienting at first, and stuff like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth sort of got me to appreciate it.

New names for Avantasia: Kiske (SHOCK HORROR), Alice Cooper and Rudolf Schenker

That makes the current line up so far: Sascha Paeth, Henjo Richter, Eric Singer, Miro, Michael Kiske, Jorn Lande, Bob Catley, Amanda Somerville, Alice Cooper, Rudolf Schenker & Tobias himself

Also, Avantasia are headling Wacken! I want to go

Yeah Nemesis, I don't think anyone would like grindcore the first time they hear it. It's like death metal, all you hear is noise until you can actually appreciate the nuances and subtleties of the genre. That's when you can begin to tell the difference between bands like obituary and suffocation, as they are quite different (saw them both this year, both played killer concerts- suffocation had one of the most brutal pits ever- seem to attract some pretty deranged fans).

James Colorado

I missed them in 2005. They opened for Motley Crue. I wanted to go for them both, as I am a massive fan of both bands- but the ticket price was more than I could afford ($120AUD- I think that's roughly $90USD, but my calculations may be off). Problem was they didn't play their own show here, but they did in New Zealand, so at least those guys got lucky. Also, in his autobiography Lemmy talks about how he passed out after getting blown by three groupies in a row! That's good, but it's got nothing on the Crue's book (The Dirt, for anyone in the world who didn't know [all three of you]- highly recommended).

Saw marduk on Friday night. They were quite good live, which was reassuring as I remember reading in Terrorizer that they weren't quite sold on them yet. Morgan and Magnus headbanged a lot, but could have moved around a bit more- but Mortuus wis an awesome frontman. They know how to build up the suspense too- Morgan, Magnus and Lars came out and took their places (M & M with their backs to the audience) and just stood there for a good two minutes while the crowd went sick, before Mortuus came out and they launched into The Levelling Dust.

Set was very good, but they played a lot of their slower stuff (could have done more from panzer division). Also, they played Wolves during the set, not as the encore, which I found annoying. They finished with panzer division marduk, and then encored with The Black..., which was good as I do like bands encoring with something from their first album (they also did Still Fucking Dead during the set, so that's another old shooler).

Problem was the songs they didn't play- no Throne of Rats, Burn My Coffin...

More on my end- the Giantour is returning to Oz!
Line-up: Megadeth (ooooh yeah, the best there is!)
Devil-Driver (YAWN!)- that should get some of you fired up!
Static-X (they're still around?)
Lacuna Coil (music's a bit mellow for my tastes, but Christine Scabia is easily one of the most beautiful women on the planet, so I'll be front and centre for their set).

Tell me about it, I thought this was supposed to be a metal fest. Megadeth are one of my favourites, and Lacuna Coil have one obvious quality, but devildriver I do not like, and I find Static X to be boring. Guess I know when to go to the bar...

No, Symphony X only did Gigantour 1, in North America. What we get is a concert with four bands, as Australian audiences probably wouldn't flock to an actual metal festival with two stages.

I hope you weren't referring to Megadeth in that boringitis comment...

I'm planning on seeing GWAR in October. Finally they're playing here on a Saturday, so it won't be a hassle to go. I'm also looking forward to seeing Cradle of Filth then (I still like them, surprisingly). CKY and some band unknown to me are also playing, but meh.

Hey James, what Marduk songs would you recommend? I have World Funetal and Le Grande Danse Macabre, and that's it. I actually like quite a bit of their slower stuff, but then there's a few of the fast songs, like Baptism By Fire, that are awesome. Do they have any melodical stuff, like in the middle of Night of the Long Knives? That song was excellent.

James Colorado
August 21st, 2007, 2:39 AM
GWAR would be killer live! I doubt they'd ever tour down here though...

As for marduk, I'd actually recommend their earlier stuff. As far as melody, the ones you already have are probably the most melodical. My favourites are the stuff off panzer division marduk (but if you prefer the melodical stuff, this album may be a bit much- it's just a constant blur of blasting- which is why it's awesome!) and their first albums, as stuff like Wolves, The Black... and Still Fucking Dead are killer, and when you hear them live, you feel like you've been violated. A good place for you would be Warshau, the live album. Also what I've heard off the new album is very good- I can't get Cold Mouth Prayer out of my head, and The Levelling Dust was a very good concert opener.

As for Cradle of Filth, I'm not a big fan (too many keyboards for my liking, that's why I prefer marduk, mayhem, etc), but I've heard they put on a good live show. You should enjoy them, and I would probably even go if they came down here. How fucked up is the video for Babalon A.D.? That is just disturbing...

Can I get everyone to give Cactus Lem a massive round of applause? He mentioned Municipal Waste a few posts back. Now Terrorizer had their song "headbanger face rip" on a cover CD, and I can tell you, when this man recommends, he knows what he's talking about!- so take a rep point. Not only does the title kill, but the song sounds like a cross of DRI and early Anthrax- in short, awesome (there's even a riff in the middle that reminds me of slayer). Cactus actually mentioned seeing them live, so hopefully I'll get the opportunity to, as they have won me over already, and I've only heard one song. Problem is, they're still small time, and won't tour here unless they can get a support slot for someone famous. Good thing is that they're young, so time is on our side.

Heard the new behemoth song "prometherion". The intro riff seemed a little samey, but the song becomes quite good, and they even throw in a hint of melody. I'm not going to go as far as some did after they released "demigod" and consider them a full death metal band, as I can still hear substantial elements of black metal, so for now I'll stick with the blackened death metal label for them, and of course there is nothing wrong with that.

When I went to get my Motorhead ticket, I was informed that the concert had sold out. Cue depression. This lasted for the half a second it took to be told that they have added a second show. So I got my ticket. Deep breath now...

I'd say it's good. A little disappointing, but I had really high hopes since I listen to Doomsday Machine everyday. Same thing happened with the Lamb of God and Trivium albums.

Angela is a little easier too understand, the awesome guitar playing is still there, but I'm not hearing as much of the brutal double bass drums I loved on the last album though, and I think Doomsday Machine was heavier.

Ooooh Helloween are in London for January. Methinks I might have to head down for that 'un. Should be a fun show, with Axxis supporting (I know Gamma Ray are supporting them on the tour, but I don't think they'll be doing London aswell)

Still umming and ahhing about a couple of gigs.
Want to see 'Ryche again obviously, but i'm not really arsed with Thin Lizzy. I suppose i'll go if i've got the spare cash come the time.

Pretty sure i'll be seeing Symphony X, even though they're not headlining...supporting for a band that bore the ever living piss out of me, Dream Theater. But really, there are no excuses not to go seeings as it's about 15 minutes from my house and, you know, Russell fucking Allen.

Loving the new Queensryche track, too. Possibly has something to do with CHRIS DEGARMO playing on it, but it's a real grower.

Sounds like a joke they must have come up with while writing the song, and they decided that it would be fucking awesome to say in concert.

I can only imagine the reason people would go crazy for Down with the Sickness. Those killer drums in the beginning always get me hyped. I tried watching some of their stuff on youtube, but I guess it's not the same thing. I am gonna see them some day...

I don't know if they should really classify Disturbed as metal anymore, they even said it themselves. Down with the Sickness and Believe are Heavy Metal, but 10,000 fist is definitely a little bit lighter than Down with the Sickness. I like 10,000 fists, but I think that Down with the Sickness is better, because you can kinda feel it a bit more...

Not big Disturbed fan, but they don't make me scream in horror when they come on.

Into the new Nile album right now. It hasn't grabbed me as much as Annihilation of the Wicked did, but I'll give it a few more listens before I give it a final judgement. Very good so far, and I think Dallas has becoem one of the premier vocalists in death metal. They played a killer show down here a few months back, better than when I saw them in 2005 (they played a lot of slower stuff, this time it was fast- BLAST BEATS!!!!), and the 2 new songs they played got a good reaction.

But I liked the conceptual element of Annihilation, and the instrumental opening then into Cast Down the Heretic was absolutely brilliant- on the new album, What Can Be Safely Written is an excellent track (nice epic sound, variations in tempo, blasting, excellent solos, etc), but the aforementioned combination of acoustic guitar into blast beats on Annihilation is impossible to top as a way to open an album.

The drummer was doing a drum solo, and went right into that song and people flipped out. I think they like doing the "ooo ah ah ah ah" or whatever stuff Draiman does just as much.

I think 10,000 Fists was probably heavier than Believe, which was pretty gay. Maybe, I don't have either and have only listened to the songs played on the radio. I wouldn't say that Believe was gay, after all look at the lyrics to Liberate. I definitely think that it was lacking compared to their other albums. A matter of fact I would go as far to say that compared to their other stuff it is complete shit compared to the others.

I AM FUCKING PSYCHED FOR THAT!

ALSO THEY'RE RECREATING THE POWERSLAVE TOUR!!! (well sort of...)

Went to Napalm Death last night. It was every bit as violent as I thought it would be. I'm actually surprised I didn't piss blood when I got up today, as I took that many shots to the kidneys. A very old school style pit. I actually fell over in the pit for the first time in 6 years but I got myself up without any help, so that kinda made up for it.

Set list was excellent, the new stuff went down well, but they also did a lot of early stuff, including a few off Scum (and none of the current line-up was even on that album- i was wondering if they'd introduce it as "from our first album", but Barney referred to it as "the first Napalm Death album", so it made sense). And putting in their cover of a certain Dead Kennedys song was fucken class...

Opening bands: Captain Cleanoff I didn't get to see much of, as I arrived near the end of their set. They impressed me when they opened for Suffocation earlier this year, but I wanted to see how they'd progressed as a live band.

Blood Duster were sufficiently drunk and disgusting (this was actually the first time I've been close to sober seeing them live), and they played the bogan anthem drink!fight!fuck! which worked the crowd well.

That said, for my money, no song by Down will ever be as good as "Stone the Crow", that was just amazing.

Speaking of good vocalists, Alter Bridge have their new CD out next month that I'm pretty psyched for. The last one had some really good tracks, and Myles Kennedy...Kennedy... has one of the best voices in the business today in my opinion.

There's a couple of new tracks from it on their Myspace page at http://www.myspace.com/alterbridge and I highly recommend the song "Ties That Bind".

Awesomeness!

Hahaha, that perfectly describes my love/hate relationship with the guy. He's a great, influential vocalist, but man, as a person...he's an absolute shithead. Total white trash scum.

I am interested to hear the new Down, though. Although II wasn't quite as good, I still like them. NOLA was unbeatable. It was like hearing a local band live, but one that was actually good. They lost that vibe with II.

No arguments from me.

Dammit, I'm still hooked on I. Greatest side project ever. I'm still convinced they're like a "lite" version of Immortal, but that in itself is great.

Also, how can you think of a better stage name than "Ice Dale?" I dare you. It's impossible not to laugh at that.

Well, what doesn't suck is that Cephalic Carnage is on the same bill. So you can see the bind I'm in. In order to see an awesome band, I have to see an atrocious one, Just cause I'm tight.

Just watch them. I saw them a few days ago and they weren't half bad. Besides, what else do you have to do?

Wait, are the headlining or supporting? I wouldn't really want to see them if they were headlining. I see your point.

To each his own I suppose, I knew they weren't metal when I posted that though, but Rock and Metal, two distinctly different genres with their own even more diverse sub-genres, are getting more and more alike as the years go by.

It's pretty weird, the Rock bands seem to be getting heavier and the metal in some cases seems to be getting lighter. A lot of the melodic metal out there at the moment could be classified as rock really in some cases.

That said, I concede to your point about Alter Bridge, even though I disagree with your statement that they suck. Creed sucked, Alter Bridge are awesome in my humble opinion.

Not liking Down though...that hurts your cred somewhat ;):p

Metal is such a silly genre. I will start with power metal, more genres to come.

Blind Guardian-Mr Sandman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDFmNgmaEe0)
Demons and Wizards- Terror Train (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dhYrLQmRlQ)

Edguy-Lavatory Love Machine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SYjvmYkbPA")

Gamma Ray-Eagle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EL1YeKjW7k4)
Iced Earth-Declaration Day (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAWrlwzfFzk)

I've probably left some groups off but I can't be bothered. You people may wonder why I started with power metal, because power metal being the silliest form of metal they would have the silliest video clips, oh my friends you would be mistaken.

I'm not quite sure what they meant myself. Bruce Dickinson said they were bringing the Powerslave set, but said it's not gonna be a pastiche of that tour, but they will be playing stuff they hadn't in years. So, the Powerslave set but maybe some songs after that period. I then ehard from a friend that they will be playing stuff up until when bruce left the band, but nothing from the Blaze or Bruce Part 2: The Revenge eras. But it's Maiden, in Australia, so what u gonna do?

I'm still surprised that I'll actually get to see them this time, since there's always been something that has kept me from going. They seem to come through KC a lot, though. It only seems like a few months ago they were last here.

And Dark Funeral is the night after. :headbang:

I went to Vintage Stock and bought a Dimmu Borgir album on vinyl last week. And it was signed by Shagrath and Silenoz. $20. I don't know who it is who keeps selling autographed black metal albums near me (I bought a signed Dimmu Borgir CD from another store down the street a while back), but it's their loss, I guess. There are more vinyls there I'll have to go back for. Another Dimmu Borgir (unsigned) and Mayhem's Grand Declaration of War.

I actually thought the opposite about Angela's voice. It's less brutal and she's sound more human and emotional than on Doomsday Machine and Anthems of Rebellion. I like it a lot better now, actually. Maybe on the next record we'll get some clean singing.

Any favorite songs yet?

I love Blood On Your Hands, I Will Live Again, and Night Falls Fast.

Are the lyrics printed in the booklet? I can't find them anywhere on the internet.

So Maiden tix for Oz tour went on sale today. At 9 AM. Which is way before my usual get up time. I got up at 9, and arrived at the ticketmaster at Knox CIty at 9:30ish, saw a monstrous line, and was informed by some very kind souls that the show was sold out- now I knew the show would sell out on the day, and that all of the pre-sale tix were long gone, but to be informed that Maiden sold out in minutes was a little unexpected (I haven't been to a gig at the Rod Laver Arena in 6 years; what I normally listen to tends to attract smaller venues with a very discerning clientele). These same kind people informed me that they already had their tix, but were waiting for a second show to be announced. So I wandered off to JB Hi-Fi to get my mother a birthday present, and killed time in the metal section. To my surprise, the helpful punters from ticketek actually found me, told me they had been looking for me, and informed me that a second show had just gone on sale. So, I got my Maiden tix.

I doubt those two gentlemen will read this, but my sincerest thanks for your assistance today. I actually went back to JB after I got my tix to see if I could thank you again, and see if I could get you some shots, but you weren't there and I'm probably the only person fuckwitted enough to drink hard liquor at 10 AM. But my appreciation stands.

I've just got to comment on Aussie's last track here- and I'm blatantly ripping this off from somewhere, but can't remember where, so can't give them credit- but that's a band that somehow managed to dumb down cock rock, that's right, they found a way to do that.

Going to the more extreme end of things, did anyone else notice that Sigh have released a new album? I've been way out of the loop on their end for a while, but the fact that they're still releasing albums has really taken me by surprise. Problem is I still tend to associate them with DSP, so can't get used to their new style and continued existence. Can anyone tell me if the album's any good?

Got back from seeing GWAR and Cradle of Filth tonight.

GWAR was awesome. They killed the Pope, George W. Bush, Don Vito, and another guy (didn't catch who he was...had long arms and was talking about not having a band and smoking crack?). They played Go to Hell, Bring Back the Bomb, Saddam A-Go-Go, Horror of Yig, Immortal Corruptor, Baby Dick Fuck, Krosstika, and another song from Beyond Hell that I didn't know (and no Sick of You...what the hell?). They were awesome, and even threw in a Trent Green joke for good measure.

Cradle of Filth were suprisingly good. Dani Filth sang his ASS off. They played all of their good stuff, too. But why the hell were they headlining over GWAR? I have no idea. The crowd liked Cradle of Filth, but it was painfully apparent that GWAR were who everyone came to see.

Damn, I wished I would've gotten those Dark Funeral tickets so I could go tomorrow, though. Figured 2 shows in one weekend were too much. Silly me.

Now I'm waiting for the Behemoth/Job For a Cowboy show in November. And I 'm thinking about tickets for Danzig between now and then. Fucking Danzig! That's incredible. Though it's on a Thursday, so I'm not sure if it'll work out. :(

I'm not sure whether they were just as good or better than Immortal, and Immortal was unbelievable.

Job For a Cowboy was kind of ridiculous, though. They had what looked like a Powerpoint presentation of various images and effects on a huge screen behind them. It was retarded. Here's an interesting challenge for all you good metal folk: rate, on a scale of 1 to metal, how metal are the following band/artists.

1) Meat Loaf (and Jim Steinman)

2) Glenn Branca

3) Hawthorne Heights

4) The Misfits

5) Orchid

6) Deathlok

7) The Insane Clown Posse

8) Led Zepplin

9) James Brown

Interesting. Branca is a little obscure, but I included him for my own curiosity. Why so low on Orchid, Hawthorne, and James Brown, and why so high on the Misfits, if you don't mind my asking?

Aussie_Outlaw
November 13th, 2007, 2:25 AM
Cos I hate anything which is made after 1985. ;)

Brown I just plain don't see as metal, in image or content from what I've heard. Then again there may be a completely other side I dont know.

I guess I include Misfits so high partly because there are a lot of heavy metal type things which are also included around them. Plus with the Danzig who does pretty much do metal a fair bit.

I just plain don't like scremo/hardcore type nonsense. And see them as fundamentally different to the awesomeness of metal. Hawthorn Heights just come off as pop-punkish to me rather than metal with different structure/themes/style.

Then again I'll draw a fairly odd line on what metal is since I can sit Motley Crue right next to Children of Bodom and be fine with it, but will make claims Blind Guardian aren't metal because they're fucking pathetic and useless and don't have a true metal bone in their body.

Metal is a tough genre to pin down, obviously. Some bands incorporate the sound or image but just aren't metal, for some reason. I'm interested to hear what other people think.

Aussie_Outlaw
November 13th, 2007, 2:52 AM
I was joking with the 1985 comment. :p

I like to think there's a basic underpinning opening, verse chorus, verse chorus, solo chorus structure or at least something similiar and I'll basically discount anything which doesn't use the idea song structure. Of course there can be additions like many more verses, bridges (oops should have included them, ah well its a rushed bit anyway) but some bands just completely ignore basic song structure which is fairly consistant through a lot of metal.

Plus I find there's a fair amount of boldness in metal which is missing from a lot of genres, also it could be said a lack of whiney emotion and a fair amount of political nonsense/fantasy which are strong themes.

Pete Cash
November 13th, 2007, 4:27 AM
Dio is the only real "metal" on that list, but there are a few groups that hit pretty close in Zeppelin and the punk groups. The Misfits had a huge impact upon Thrash Metal though which probably gives them bonus metal points.

Dave is just trolling me with that Blind Guardian comment because they are obviously a metal group. Probably the only power metal group that is worth listening to in anyway.

What do you mean by old school metal.

I never know what's classified as what but examples of stuff I like that could be classified as metal are: Alice Cooper, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, KISS, Scorpions, Dokken, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, LA Guns, Winger and Quiet Riot.

Some of them can be said to be rock or even hair metal I guess. But yeah, them sort of bands.

Aussie_Outlaw
November 15th, 2007, 10:05 PM
You just listed 5 different metal genres.

I'd say this sits more in my style though.

Bon Jovi, GNR, Led Zep, Van Halen, Anthrax (Sound of White Noise onwards), Poison, Ratt, Twisted Sister, WARRANT

oh and oblig Fozzy reference.

The Wilf

Yeah those bands all fall into varying metal genres and some into rock.

I always considered Bon Jovi as a rock band really although they're late eighties stuff was hair metal.. I think Poison and Warrant are both hair metal bands too.

GNR and Twisted Sister I think are really hard rock and Ratt I'd say were probably glam metal bordering on Rock.

I've never heard any Anthrax songs I don't think, well not any I can remember offhand.

You have great music taste, similar to me really.

I went to the Black Crusade tour in London last night, really good show, one of the best overall gigs I've been too in a long time.

Shadows Fall opened up, and I was amped to see them. Been one of my favourite bands for the past few years, and they rarley come to the UK. Seen them once before at Download in 2006, and they were one of the best bands that weekend, so I couldn't wait to see them again. Shame it took fucking ages to get people into the venue, doors opened late, but they were on by 6pm. Only got to see their last three and a half tracks, missed half of the set, and was majorly let down :( What I saw was tight though, really tight. They so need to do a headline tour at some point here, as they can easily fill 400-600 capacity venues.

Arch Enemy were the least enjoyable band of the night. I don't mind them, but they were bloody noisey. Angela Goscow is nowhere near as hot as she's made out to be either, nice head of hair, but horrible clothes, and a face that resembles Missy Hyatt.

I haven't listened to Dragonforce in ages. Went through a brief phase of loving them, but I'm not that into them any more, must be over a year since I last laistened to them properly. Good set though, some really humorous moments, the Bass Player and Guitarist swaped instruments mid song at one point (not Herman Li the other guy) which was interesting. Only got five songs in, but they chose them well.

Was my sixth time of seeing Trivium. They've always been at their best both times I've seen them at Donnington, really living up to the big occasion, and each indoor show I've seen them at, they've been very average. That changed last night though, as they were damn good. Really stepped up the pace, seemed motivated, and stormed through an awesome set.

Machine Head have to be one of the most solid live bands around, Rob Flynn is really great as a live front man, does a great job of really getting people into things, and they structure they're sets incredibly well. Really good performance, and was really glad to see a decent bit of the new stuff live.

Not many of my mates are that into Maiden to pay that sort of price.

A mate of mine lives is doing a year work placement in Germany and wants me to go to Wacken with him. I'm not into Metal anywhere near as much as I used to be, but the festival is a relativley cheap affair, plus I really wanna see Maiden on this tour, and German Beer is awesome. I'm considering it.

It's not bad, has a few emo-ey moments though which severely drop it down in quality, but all in all it's not a bad CD. Some pretty good guitarwork and the vocalist is the guy who was the former lead singer of Spineshank.

Hehe, it's not communication that bothers me, it's the whole scene aspect of Myspace that I really hate. It's all uninteresting people posting uninteresting blogs, meeting and adding other people as friends, 90% of which they've never met in real life and likely never will, yet counting their number of friends as some sort of worth amongst the other Myspace posters.

I've never had a Myspace account and I never will. Maybe I'm missing out, but for now I'm happy in my ignorance :D

The only good aspect of Myspace, really, is for lesser known and unsigned bands to get some exposure. I'm all for that, because there are a lot of really talented people out there and the more exposure they get, the better it is for any music fan.

That said, I'm a total fecking hypocrite because I do have a Facebook account, but that was to keep up with University mates after graduation, and I don't treat it with anything other than a quick graffitti to take the piss out of a mate for something or just to see if there's a get-together planned for any time soon.

Anyways, time to get this derailed train back on the tracks!

Not sure if they've been mentioned here yet, but Five Finger Death Punch are pretty good. Their new CD is astonishing from front to back. The guitarwork is excellent, as would be expected from Darrell Roberts from W.A.S.P. and a chap by the name of Zoltan Bathory (Candidate for the best name ever, I must say! :) ). The frontman Ivan Moody has a pretty wicked growl on him, and he's a decent singer too.

http://www.myspace.com/ffdp

I recommend listening to Ashes first, as that's most indicative of their style. The Bleeding is a more accessible song (it's the first single) and while it's good, it's not the best song on the album by a long shot. In my opinion, that would be this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3ouX_mM23o (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID3_X_L69lE) (White Knuckles)

Dragonforce - Inhuman Rampage
Dream Theater - Images And Words
Blind Guardian - ....shit, I forgot which one. I think it's A Twist In The Myth

Anyways, I like the Iron Maiden and Dragonforce albums, Dream Theater's was a bit meh and I haven't really listened to Blind Guardian yet. I'm going to get Judas Priest and Motorhead next (dunno what albums yet). Any recommendations for me? I'm very open to suggestion here.

I would have gotten imaginations from the otherside for Blind Guardian.

Images and Words is alright for a dream theater album. I don't really like Iron Maiden though.

Get Mastodon's Leviathan and listen to it from start to finish. If that doesn't leave you speechless then I don't know what will. Definitely go for Imaginations.. by Guardian also. It's the best.

Also, what's all the fuss about Baroness' Red Album? It's the only metal album I've seen popping up on year end best of lists. Anyone heard it?

I haven't listen to much metal this year to be fair. Therion's Gothic Kabbalah, Machine Head's The Blackening and SymX's Paradise Lost are about the only ones.. so they're my top 3. :)

My favourite albums of 2007 (that I found, not released in 2007)

Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible
Nightmare of You - Nightmare of You
My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade
The Smiths - The Queen is Dead
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses

Though none are really metal, they're still awesomeness.

What is it you like about maiden and DF? I can give you good suggestions once you tell me your taste in vocals, heaviness, theme, etc.

Woods of Ypres' new album is finally out: http://rockbox.psychocydd.co.uk/details.php?id=9f61b4504896c6350f5b1a4876e944e68e7 11084

Only torrent I could find for it. I have it ordered so I just grabbed the first thing I could find before it gets here. I think you all should get it.

Only listened once so far but I like it a lot. Bit of a different sound but the Woods sound is still very much there. This is going to be all I play for the next week.

Yes Ive heard these guys. They're music aint too bad. I love 'The Way Of The Fist' - I was listening to their music a fair bit when I was going through something...it definetly got me pumped!

you metal faggots should vote for me in the POTTY thread...

Has anyone else (maybe alex) heard a russian thrash metal group called vicious crusade. I quite like what I have heard so far it is a bit samey but its interesting. Speaking of Russia though I still really rate Forrest Stream. They apparantly have a new album out this year which I am looking forward to. (Demo here: http://www.myspace.com/foreststreamband)

The new Orphaned Land album should be out sometime soonish as well I hope. Could be a decent year.

EDIT

Oh also I went out to the local "rock" pub last night and there was this metal group which obviously was quite folky in nature. Anyway the singer/guitarist would also play the flute during songs which I thought was quite the novel touch. Nothing makes me rock out harder than a flute.

Have they sorted out the issues they had with the recording, I could hear the guys moving their fingers on the fretboard on the one you uploaded and it sounded awful at times.

also while im posting like a crazy person, everybodies favourite mesh trucker hat wearing vocalist warrel dane is recording a solo album

I was pretty pissed that I couldn't go to the Hellyeah/Machine Head/Nonpoint show on Feb. 12 because one my classes started that night. I really wanted to see Machine Head, but tonight I found something out that makes up for it.

The Gignatour with In Flames, Children of Bodom, and Megadeth is coming to Milwaukee on May 7th. I'm looking into buying tickets tomorrow.

I really want to see In Flames and Children Of Bodom live.

Think about how much you want to see Children of Bodom live instead, I can tell you Abby that In Flames are really average live.

I mean they're a good band, but when I saw them they were just really lethargic and had no interest in playing the large crowd up. I don't really buy the excuse of "ah, jet lagged" or whatever, because you all pay a certain amount to get in and hear these blokes and you expect a decent show.

Thankfully one of the opening acts absolutely smashed 'em, and only because they were willing to play along with the audience.

When looking for some bands to play on air, I've been recommended a band called Stormwarrior and was sent a track called Lindisfarnel.

On first listen, it is basically an Iron Maiden rip off, but on repeated listens, it is actually a great track.

So, has anyone else heard of these guys and if so, can you recommend any of their stuff to me?

Many thanks

Yeah, it's pretty pants. The States get In Flames and CoB for fuck sake.

I don't even like Megadeth all that much though, so wouldn't be much point in me going anyway.

This will be their first tour after taking time off to record their new record, so hopefully they'll be more excited this time around.

Lets hope the Reading rumours of Rage Against the Machine and Metallica are true.

I wouldn't fork out the cash to go or anyhing, but I'm sure I could find enjoyment in all of the bands (apart from HIM obviously), even if the Prophets are the only one I'm really much of a fan of.

Rage and Metallica would be out of this world.

Well, Rage would.

We got Rage Against The Machine last month for the Big Day Out. A couple of friends of mine went and said they were really awesome live.

Quick question for the Aussies, anyone going Soundwave? Im not going but it looks like an OK line up.

Im disappointed Killswitch Engage arent doing their own show here in Melbourne. Apparently they're doing one in Sydney though!

Kev

I would've gone to Soundwave specifically for Killswitch but I'd much rather see Dear Hunter for more than half the price of Soundwave.

Though a girl I know can shave about thirty or forty off the ticket prices for Soundwave...

i saw Killswitch w. Lamb of God, DevilDriver, and Soilwork about a month ago.. the lights went out during Lamb of God's set. they played in the dark for like 5 minutes before they got the stage lights on.

Killswitch was badass.

My top 10 songs for the last month or so is just strange or so my winamp tells me so.

The Smiths - This Charming Man
Van Halen - Panama
Stone Roses - Driving South
The International Noise Conspiracy - A Small Demand
Refused - Summerholidays vs Punkroutine
Avantasia - Dancing With Tears In My Eyes
Ok Go - There's A Fire
Manic Street Preachers - Rendition
Scorpions - Rock You Like A Hurricane
The Clash - London Calling

There's like one metal song there and it's a 80's pop cover. :$

My first gig was Slayer/Machinehead.
