My Hair Metal list is incomplete.

Or does every hair metal band's name start with a letter before G?

Hmm Ratt.

Obviously not.

Don't worry Stan, I probably won't be around next week anyway.

I've liked Blind Guardian for a while now, downloading music from time to time, but now I want to purchase an album of theirs, Which one?

I was trying to figure out why DOOM sounded familiar.....

The best BG album is tough to call. Their sound changes a lot from album to album. I'd say Nightfall in Middle Earth is best...Into the storm, Mirror Mirror, Nightfall, Time stands still are all good songs. I love the opening riff to Mirror mirror...

If you like them, check out blind-guardian.net. They're on an American tour right now. I hope you're there, I forgot to check your location thingy.

Heh I'm so out of the loop I never even heard about it!

I think I'm going to some WXA wrestling show in Liverpool anyways.

Hey anyone else here got the Sepultura Chaos DVD? 3 old videos on one DVD.....nealry 3 hours of Sepultural goodness!

I could use some suggestions:

Can anyone recommend any decent death metal bands in the vein of Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, etc.? I've been listening to several CC songs from the new CD, and I'm finding that I like it a whole hell of a lot. But I don't know which bands to check out, since the farthest I've went is a few bands like Vader and Deicide.

NiMMERS

Check out Entombed's 'Wolverine Blues'. There is a fine line between good and bad death metal bands...I suppose it all comes down to originality. I say bar death metal and get into the Swedish scene with bands like Meshuggah, In Flames, Arch Enemy, Entombed, Darkane, Soilwork and Finland's Children of Bodom.

Anyone in this thread like Down? I'm hesitant to call them metal, more like really hard rock, but whatever. They are really goddamn cool, even if I'm not a big Phil Anselmo fan.

Crabby
December 3rd, 2002, 7:54 PM
Yep, I'm a huge Down fan, as is Outlaw, and I believe that WizoOzz is quite the Down follower. Do you like Pantera, CoC, EyeHateGod and Crowbar at all? All great bands worth checking uout if you haven't already done so.

Meshuggah= great metal. I read an interesting article about them in my friend's Kerrang! magazine, about them on the Ozzfest tour. Man it'd be cool watching them blow bands like Adema off the stage.

them69
December 3rd, 2002, 8:45 PM
Well, I'm actually not really a Pantera fan at all. They have a couple good songs, and I especially like their Planet Caravan cover, but they just rub me the wrong way for some reason. I'm a big fan of Peppar Keenan though, and CoC as well...don't know anything by the other two bands that made up Down. Any suggestions?

I hate to do this to ya, but I saw Meshugga open for Tool about a month ago... I was definitely not a fan. The constant screaming vocals just don't cut it for me, plus their music seemed real disjointed to me. Oh well.

Crabby
December 3rd, 2002, 8:52 PM
Man, there would have been some changes in time signatures at those shows. I hear Tool are huge Meshuggah fans, and that's why they went on tour together.

What other metal bands do you like? Are you into acts like Iron Maiden, Anthrax, Slayer, Hatebreed, Megadeth, etc?

them69
December 3rd, 2002, 11:53 PM
I was in the middle of a freaking response and the power went out for 20 minutes...

To be perfectly honest, I'm not much of a metalhead. I like a select few bands and acts, but a lot of the old school metal, and the more extreme stuff (black, death, etc) I just can't get into. I'm into a lot more of the hard rock stuff like Tool, SOAD, well hell, a lot of stuff. I know a good bit about some metal, but it's just not my thing. Out of those bands, I do like some Maiden, and I think I have a couple Hatebreed songs floating around somewhere...they are not bad at all.

I am on an enormous Down kick though. Guitar tone is so thick you can cut it with a knife, I love it. The Southern groove is so damn awesome, too.

Aussie_Outlaw
December 4th, 2002, 12:47 AM
Not even Megadeth.

Damn.

What about Prog? Dream Theater, Symphony X, Pain of Salvation?

Cheesy Power Metal? Edguy, Stratovarious, Blind Guardian?

them69
December 4th, 2002, 1:30 AM
Megadeth good. I own RIP and numerous mp3s of other songs. Dave's vocals grate on my nerves after awhile, and I haven't found many songs I like off later albums, but they are definitely a fun band to listen to. I also love old school Metallica (and new, too, but that's hard rock, not metal)

Prog metal ain't my thing. I'll keep my not so favorable opinion of DT to myself;)

Here's a list of bands with songs I like, it's incomplete:
Iced Earth
In Flames
Black Sabbath (I think they're hard rock but most peopel say metal)
Darkest Hour
Preist
Zao

I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch of stuff, and when you mention a name I'll be like "duh", but oh well.

Aussie_Outlaw
December 4th, 2002, 1:54 AM
Hmm Inflames. Go for Soilwork as well too.

Iced Earth's live release Alive In Athens, tires the shit out of me, it basically puts me to sleep even though it's still a good release.

Priest means Judas Priest?

And the reason I bring up Megadeth, is because they're my favourite band :) I can't help it. Dave's vocals never really get on my nerves, some vocalists do, his vocals dont.

On other things I ran my speakers to hell. They're dead now after playing music through them 8 hours a day, for the past few weeks, at full blast. :(

They were ratshit anyway.

Also I got Nile's Amongst The Catacombs of Nephren ka (havent listened to it yet) and Fu Manchu's California Crossing as well as Racer X's Superheros off a mate.

Ah tis good.

I didn`t mind his vocals on the first 3 or 4 albums but after that they went from being a low growl to a whiny yelp

Both quality albums, I must say. They're not metal, but I've also been listening to loads of (International) Noise Conspiracy lately, they've got some killer tracks.

Personally, I don't think a whole lot of Megadeth after "Countdown To Extinction" (which I see as their own "Black Album", but without the massive success, in that it was kinda over-produced and mainstream-targeted). "Youthanasia" had its moments, IMO, but the albums after that have been ordinary to say the least. No offence, though. The later albums have had some worthwhile tracks but far too much shit. I love "old school" 'Deth, though, I mean, if you dig what they've done lately, then cool.

Never really heard a whole lot of Blind Guardian before (except from a friend's collection), but I downloaded some stuff a few days ago and I'm liking it more every time that I hear it.

Them69, I like heaps of varying styles of music as well. Metal (and hard rock) are my favourites and make up most of my collection, but it's not all I listen to.

Sweet Stan, you mentioned in another thread Faith No More's "The Perfect Crime" from the Bill and Ted soundtrack. I love that song but I never found a copy of it on CD when I looked a few years ago. Quality stuff, though. I also don't see the problem with their cover of "War Pigs" being on "The Real Thing" album, although I do think that "The Cowboy Song" from the Live album could have been put on there, it was a great B-Side.

Went and saw Soulfly/Hatebreed/Karnivool last night. Pretty good show, and I always like the Uni of NSW Roundhouse as a concert venue.Max znd co.' set could have been a little longer, IMO (they played about an hour and ten minutes), but it was still a good night.Hatebreed were great, pretty intense, and Karnivool were average, a little generic, but okay (they were a lot more melodic than I would have expected as well). Interestingly, apparently Max wouldn't sign any Sepultura/Nailbomb stuff at the Sydney in-store, although that doesn't really surprise me.

That was the case a few years back when Soulfly did the BDO a few years back. I had a poster and my CD sleeve there and he forgot to sign the CD the dumb fuck. I thought it was funny how Gloria was standing at the side of everything and watching over like she was watching her kids play sports arms crossed and handbag over her shoulder.

She dissolved Sepultura by getting Max under her thumb. I hate her.

Well, that's interesting. I was going to go to the in-store but work committments prevented that. I hear she's pretty hands on in terms of how she manages his and the band's affairs. I didn't know until a few days ago that she and some of the family actually tours everywhere with him and the band. It was pretty damn cool at the show, though, they played some Sepultura and Nailbomb stuff. Hopefully Sepultura find their way down here for their next album.

I was there for the Seps in 99 and I'll be there again when they come back. Apparently they're finished (or near) their new EP.

Crabby
December 8th, 2002, 4:09 AM
Cool, we should have a few beers at the show when they do come out this way again (I haven't caught them before, so it'd rock). Yep, the Nailbomb stuff was pretty cool. I'd heard it before but couldn't recall the name of it.

Isn't the new Sepultura EP a covers collection?

NiMMERS
December 9th, 2002, 2:51 AM
Yeah that'd be cool! If you aint heard the Nailbomb live album do so cos it rocks hard and is full of intense songs.

Yeah the new E.P. is all covers...no idea of who they are covering though. Should be good what ever it turns out to be.

Crabby
December 9th, 2002, 4:14 AM
Have heard a few live tracks from Nailbomb, but not the whole album, I thought it was only a live EP they had released. I'm also fairly certain the Sepultura EP is a punk covers collection, as I said before. Interesting to see which tracks they have decided to cover. The new live album is killer, though, I borrowed a mate's copy of it. I'll have to shell out the cash to buy it, it rocks.

Just out of interest, where did Sepultura play in Sydney, as in what venue? Just wondered what the approximate size of the crowd was.

Yeah the live album rules. I love the Cro-Mag's cover. Awesome.

The gig was at the Hordern Pavillion. Packed house.....I was near the back to start with and didnt plan to mosh too hard but once they launched into 'Against' I was thrashing :) Ending up right in front of Andreas :D

I just heard "At One With the Beast" by Wurdulak and "Demon" by Entombed (already heard "Wolverine Blues...R.I.P. Headbanger's Ball :( ), and they both kicked ass. I'll probably end up buying both of those, but not before I get Cannibal Corpse's Gallery of Suicide and Deicide's Once Upon the Cross (I just hope it's as good as Serpents of the Light was).

I've also been checking out a few songs by Mortician, Cephalic Carnage, Krisiun, Cryptopsy, and Bloodbath, and they're not bad, but nothing's caught my ear like the first bands I mentioned (except for Bloodbath...they fuckin' rule!!).

Anybody on these boards listen to Vader?? I'm thinking of getting their new CD, but the few songs I heard from it sound a lot alike. Litany was good, and so was their cover song CD, but I'm not sure if I want to throw $17 at Revelations yet.

NiMMERS
December 10th, 2002, 7:13 AM
Personally, I reckon Once Upon The Cross is better than Serpents...

Gallery of Suicide rocks hard. I like Vader. Don't shell out for Vader's latest efforts. They pale in comparison to their older stuff. I suggest getting Sothis and Black to the Blind. Or even check out their covers album Future of the Past which is awesome. I love their live album...so much energy.

Brujeria- An interesting side project, well worth checking out. Mindsnare are another band I've been listening to lately.

I hope Sepultura find their way Down Under sometime soon, it's been a while since us Aussies got some quality metal tours (not forgetting Soulfly/Hatebreed).

No, can't say I am, any good?

Off-topic, but I finally bought Jane's Addiction's "Kettle Whistle" compilation a few days ago. I can't say that the unreleased stuff is on par with the band's first three albums but some of the live tracks really kick arse.

Speaking of Jane's Addiction (no, they aren't metal, but what the hell), their new studio album is apparently going to be out sometime early next year. Hopefully they play some new material when I catch them in January. (Can't wait for that either).

NO!

I went looking on Thursday (yesterday) at JB HiFi in Chadstone, and it wasn't there, I tried the week before at JB in Frankston and it wasn't there.

I'm more interested in Symphony X's Odessy, but my brother is gonna buy Opeth's deliverance so I'm looking for that also.

You can generally find at least a few of their early efforts in larger music shops, though I picked up most of my Black Sabbath albums at a market ages ago, all for about half-price or so, which was some nice work indeed.

They only see the current nu-metal and 90's thrash as metal.

No power, no progressive.

Those fuckers!

Crabby
December 30th, 2002, 5:48 AM
Sanity just looks after their own interests and what sells, and bands like Dream Theater and In Flames, amongst others, just don't shift a whole lot of units here, especially when compared with nu metal acts like Korn, Slipknot or Murderdolls.

BTW, Outlaw, what's the release date for the new Anthrax album? Should be a killer.

Aussie_Outlaw
December 30th, 2002, 6:03 AM
Wait I do have a release date
I remember posting it here a few weeks back

from Anthrax.com

Anthrax's new album "WE'VE COME FOR YOU ALL" will be released in Japan through JVC on February 4, 2003 and in Europe on February 24 through Nuclear Blast. The United States, Canada, South America and Australia/New Zealand will follow shortly there after.

-Scott

Look in the metal page on the left. Each issue it'll mention Murderdolls, Stone Sour, Soulfly, Machine Head.

And thats basically it, maybe Fear Factory or another similiar band.

Dipshits, thats not metal. Well some of it is, but there are better examples of it.

Crabby
December 30th, 2002, 6:14 AM
I know, I've read the Sain magazine a few times, and it's just hyping releases for the latest pop or pop/rock albums, and some of the "mainstream" hard rock and nu metal acts, most of which suck major arse, not that that really surprises anyone. There was a guy who used to write a supposed "metal column" in there and he was a total tool, who you could tell knew nothing about the genre.

They do mention a few good metal acts like Fear Factory, but only generally when they're touring or something like that.

Aussie_Outlaw
December 30th, 2002, 6:18 AM
He's still there.

Plus they review In Flames' reroute. Which is a joke because they call it a compelling listen compared to their back catalogue. Which is full of shit, it's their most commercial album.

Whoracle and Colony take longer to get used to. Reroute took me one listen.

Plus it's been out for 3 months.

Crabby
December 30th, 2002, 6:25 AM
Eh, I thought it was a different guy, but maybe it's the same dude, I don't make a point of reading that magazine.

I must get the new Opeth, costs $40 around here, but still, from what I've heard of it is really truly amazing, have you managed to get your hands on a copy yet?

Also, looks like a Metallica tour for 2003 may be on the cards. Great news if it actually goes down.

Aussie_Outlaw
December 30th, 2002, 6:28 AM
May be an opeth tour between april 4th and 13th from what I'm hearing.

My brother got it for Xmas, I havent listened to it yet though.

Too busy with Symphony X - Odyssey. Now thats an album!

Crabby
December 30th, 2002, 6:34 AM
I've heard those rumours as well, the band do tour some more obscure places so it is entirely possible, fingers crossed. BTW, what's with no Aussie dates thus far for Anthrax's world tour?

Should get on the cases of some promoters, hassle them a little, but in a positive way.

Aussie_Outlaw
December 30th, 2002, 6:38 AM
Anthrax havent lined up a world tour yet.

They were touring Russia recently though.

And no Aussie dates on the Maiden tour, but they've only just started announcing them. They've started in June.

However The haunted will come downunder next April.

And I'm not sure on the status of next years MFTB.

Crabby
December 30th, 2002, 6:50 AM
As far as I know, MFTB is on next year, what with all the publicity it received, some other insurers have apparently become interested.

I also highly recommend you get the new Queens Of The Stone Age album, like you mentioned in another thread. They are great live as well, definitely worth checking out.

Like I said, there's got to be some promoters to hassle a little.

Aussie_Outlaw

Yeah I have a HMV voucher, and I'm away tomorrow shopping, and I thought I could find some Blind Guardian or something, but QOTSA is probably the only half metal thing I'll find.

Plus Kyuss (Blues for Red Sun) and Fu Manchu (California Crossing) I also have, as well as both Down records, it's a good type of music.

Did you see Rage two weeks ago when Max was programming? Two QOTSA and Kyuss clips, and Holy Wars and 13 Seps/Soulfly songs.

Pity they had to ruin it with 5 SOAD tracks.

Crabby
December 30th, 2002, 7:01 AM
Yep, I have the Max Cavalera Rage on tape, some good variety in that episode. I love Kyuss videos especially, always a trippy, oddball watch, "Demon Cleaner" is probably the best one of their clips. Kyuss can take a little while to get into, but once you're a fan, you'll never look back.

The first two albums are also damn good, they'd be just as good buys as Songs For The Deaf anyway.

You should be able to find the latest Hatebreed album in there as well, a quality disc, could be a good buy from there.

Aussie_Outlaw
December 30th, 2002, 7:07 AM
Hmm no to hatebreed, not a fan yet. Don't like.

I prefer melody usually and from what I've heard of Hatebreed it's punky, thrash kinda thing.

Hmm Edguy, Blind Guardian, Stratovarious, Symphony X.

*wets self*

Crabby
December 30th, 2002, 7:11 AM
Yep, not much melody evident in Hatebreed, though it;s quality stuff if you're in the mood for it, gotta love some sweet metalcore.

New Iron Maiden and Opeth albums next year, should be well worth the wait.

I don't really know much Edguy, any albums/tracks you would recommend in particular? As for my own recommendations, get hold of some Helloween, great speed metal. Rage are also a pretty cool thrash outfit, man.

Crabby
December 30th, 2002, 7:15 AM
German metal is rather cool, The Scorpions=great classic heavy metal. Rammstein put on a very cool live show as well.

I actually like Rage Against The Machine a lot, they were one of the first rock bands that I really got into. I still like their stuff a lot, despite the fact it doesn't seem to be very cool for metal fans these days to dig them. Shame, they have some very cool tracks back in their day. Their first album in particular is awesome.

Aussie_Outlaw

Edguy take Helloween as influences supposedly and Maiden, alot of Maiden.

There's half a video clip floating around Kazaa for All the clowns somewhere 44mb for 2.10min

Crabby
December 30th, 2002, 7:21 AM
Hmmmm, might have to check that out. That sounds cool, I really dig those bands. Should be cool.

Why did you change your location? Not living near Iron Maiden any more? I have to get hold of the Rock In Rio album still, I just haven't seen it around anywhere.

Aussie_Outlaw
December 30th, 2002, 7:24 AM
Charlotte got too expensive for me.

Ooo Rock In Rio, the hand puppets easter egg on the DVD is the funniest thing. But yes it is a good album. I started with that.

Now I live where Symphony X tells me to, hence the Odyssey status and Damnation location. Tracks from both those albums.

Eh, I've only seen it in one place, and that's how much it was.

Hatebreed are cool if you like a little hardcore. Not a huge fan of the genre but I definitely dig Refused and Toe-To-Toe, amongst a few others. They've got more of a metal influence, though, hence the relatively new term "metalcore".

Stan, you'd probably be the best person to ask- How does Judas Priest's "Ram It Down" rate as an album? (especially when compared to their other work). I like JP a lot, but I'm far from an expert, and "British Steel" is the only album of theirs that I own. Just interested in picking it up sometime.

The first two tracks are awesome. The entire album is great JP, but it's my only JP album, British Steel is my next one.

Even though the song Breaking the Law is quality.

"British Steel" is fucking great, get your hands on it. I just saw "Ram It Down" really cheap the other day and wanted to know if it was worth buying, I guess it is.

Hatebreed are pretty one-dimensional, I agree, and a little samey, but they're great if you're in the right mood. Their last album was better, but damn it's hard to find around here, maybe I just need to look harder, huh?

Aussie_Outlaw

On QOTSA news, I got Rated R not SFTD since I liked the clip for Secret better than No-one knows.

Did ya get the Edguy tracks?

Crabby
January 2nd, 2003, 12:54 AM
Both those albums are pretty killer, their first rocks like a mother as well, it's almost all I've been listening to lately. You can generally pick up "R" reasonably cheap these days, excellent choice. I love "Auto Pilot", "Leg Of Lamb" and "Monsters In The Parasol" in particular, as well as the singles.

I downloaded these Edguy tracks-All The Clowns, Jerusalem, Golden Dawn and Fallen Angels. pretty cool stuff, I haven't listened to them much yet, but I'm liking German metal more and more it seems.

Aussie_Outlaw
January 2nd, 2003, 1:09 AM
Clowns, Jerusalem, Golden are all top class songs.

The album is brilliant as an entire piece of work, even if it's not a conceptual album or anything. Fallen Angels is one of my lesser liked tracks on the album (disliked 2nd after Wash Away The poison) But it's still a fuckin awesome track.

All you need is a decent set of speakers and it rocks.

Probably would be the best album I found last year.

My albums from last year (not necessarly made last year) would be:
Edguy - Mandrake
Symphony X - V
Nevermore - Dead Heart in A Dead World
Dream Theater - Awake
In Flames - Colony
Motley Crue - Greatest Hits

4 of those albums SyX/Edguy/MC/IF I had for the 10 weeks leading upto exams, and through exams. They got me thru. Damn fine albums, all of them. None released in 2002, but I found em in 2002.

Crabby
January 2nd, 2003, 1:18 AM
Soilwork's "Natural Born Chaos" was definitely one of the best albums I picked up last year. I bought a tonne of albums this year, not a lot of metal ones that were released in 2002, but some kick arse efforts nonetheless.

Do you like Deftones at all, Outlaw?

Aussie_Outlaw
January 2nd, 2003, 4:56 AM
I forgot the soilwork album. But it's not as great as Colony IMO.

As for Deftones, bleh, Chino's voice grates on me.

Crabby
January 2nd, 2003, 6:13 AM
Deftones are about the only so-called "nu metal" band that I like, although their last album had more of a rock/alternative feel to it than anything else. They will rock at BDO, though.

I haven't bought it but Dream Theater's "Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence" would have to be up there in the best of the year.

Aussie_Outlaw
January 2nd, 2003, 6:41 AM
Not really.

If it was 50minutes long then yes it would be, but it's 90minutes long, and I feel that at least half of it is filler.

Cut the fat from the songs and you would have had a brilliant album.

Crabby
January 2nd, 2003, 7:02 AM
From what I've heard of it Opeth's latest deserves a mention as well. I haven't listened to 3HOP for a few weeks, is Haig still taking votes for album(s) of the year?

That's true. Hammerfall sounds more like straightforward metal than Iced Earth. I haven't heard any Hammerfall that sounds thrash yet.

Probably sounds kinda weird, but some of Iced Earth's songs remind me of GWAR. Don't get me wrong, Iced Earth could outplay GWAR any day, but it sounds like they use the same brand of guitars or something.

Eh, I probably sound like an idiot. I'm going to bed. Thanks for the suggestions.

But their older albums are average. Mandrake rocks though.

Hammerfall, eh? Legacy of Kings would be your best choice; classic power metal. Renegade is known in many circle as Renegayde, and Crimson Thunder has some dumb songs, like In Memoriam. Hearts on Fire is probably the best things off the album.

I've got no idea what they sound like. But they're a well known band in the alternative scene.

I've held off for the past few years getting 'Reinventing the Steel' by Pantera as I've heard it sucks. Well it doesnt suck.........but I will describe it as an over-produced average effort. Wheres the raw power and feeling I'm used to? That release is surely not in Pantera's style.....stick to what you know fellas and write some dirty heavy shit with memorable riffs.

Did anyone read at blistering that Dimebag and Vinnie have formed a new band called New Found Power with an old Jerry Cantrell bassist and Patrick Lachman (ex-Halford)? Interesting prospect I reckon well worth checking out.

Also, Dimebag had this to say about Pantera's status...
"It's really weird, but this is the clear-headed, honest truth: [PANTERA/DOWN vocalist Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown] up and left us hangin' and won't let us know their intentions or future plans. For the last 20 years, my brother Vinnie and I have put our heart and soul into PANTERA and we never thought this situation would ever happen to us. By now I thought for sure we would've done another record, but they don't seem to care how it affects Vinnie and I, or the road crew or, most of all, all the PANTERA fans that have been so fuckin' awesomely great to us for so long. We've made several attempts to talk to those guys and they keep putting us off. This is not a situation we've created — it's a situation we've been forced into.

Bottom line, for Vinnie and me it's all about the music, kickin' ass and havin' a good time. So we've got together with some of our close buds and formed a new band called NEW FOUND POWER. The record is almost done and will be out soon. We've put 110 percent into it, just like we always do, so I guarantee you won't be let down."

People have been saying that the new songs kick ass, so I'm gonna buy it....whenever it comes out. Hopefully they don't push the US release date back any farther. :(

Hammerfall - Legacy of Kings
Immortal - Sons of Northern Darkness
In Flames - Whoracle
Cannibal Corpse - Gallery of Suicide or Gore Obsessed
Iced Earth - The Dark Saga
Nile - In Their Darkened Shrines
Deicide - Once Upon the Cross

I'll probably end up buying them all eventually, but I can't make up my mind which one to get now. And the local music store seems to carry everything except black metal, so I couldn't find Mayhem or Immortal at all (possibly because of suspected National Socialist stuff). Woe is me. :blah:

I'm thinking about getting Crimson Thunder. The Unforgiving Blade is a kickass song. Still haven't checked out Edguy, though.

No the In Flames cd has "Clad In Shadows '99" as well as backgrounds, winamp skins and a video of Jotun.

For Crimson Thunder, Hearts on Fire and Riders on the storm are classic power metal songs, the video for Hearts on Fire owns.

Yes BG's Nightfall has Nighfall on it, but no it doesn't have blood on my hands.

I'm eagerly awaiting Marduk's next album "World Funeral". Aswell as Necrophagia's "The Divine Art Of Torture" which I swear they originally said would be out last year.

And if anyone is interested, you can hear two samples or so from Marduk's up-coming album at their official website (www.marduk.nu). They're also doing a tour for the album too. They better come to England after they decided not to do the London Show on the Danzig tour.

I liked the idea of "dark ambient" music, and this was recommended so I gave it a try. This album was apparently recorded in a prison and it shows. The sounds are sooo dated, seemingly recorded in the early 80's not the turn of the millenium. "Die Liebe Nerphus" is plesently pagan, but the rest is.. its just not good, infact its silly. And the CD only lasts about 30 mins. Im told that Filosofem is the best Burzum album.

Burzum is ambient?! :wtf: So dated?! Plesently (heh) Pagan?! What the...:blah:

And ok, it's Burzum - as far as I'm aware I'm his only 'real' fan on the board. So here is something far more amusing.

Talking about Battles In The North

Battles in the north was on first listen a major disappointment. I say this because the production of the recordings are poor and low quality. The guitar sounds very muffled and unclear, which did not enable me to enjoy a recommended band. In contrast bands such as Emperor have excellent recordings where all parts of the song are clearly audible and discernible from each other. On a further listen to the battles in the north cd, I realised that this band have attempted to aim for complexity and technique in their playing style and in the process forgot to write songs!!

Again bands such as Emperor and Cradle of filth marry technical precision and exemplary songwriting ability. In future I would recommend borrowing an Immortal recording from a friend before shelling out on any recordings of theirs.

Yes, that's right folks, somebody had the nerve to compare c.o.f to Immortal.

Wow...:wtf:

They did The Sex Pistols- "Never Mind The Bollocks....." a few weeks ago, that was a pretty entertaining show, found out loads of information I never knew.

Also, seeing as I know you're a Judas Priest fan, and I already own "British Steel" and "Ram It Down", what other albums of theirs would you highly recommend?

That would have been just before Rob Halford left the band, huh? Funny stuff indeed.

Saw a bunch of Judas Priest albums cheap a few days ago, I think I'll pick up a few more of them.

Speaking of essential albums, I've been listening to loads of Refused's "The Shape Of Punk To Come" lately, what a fucking awesome album.

It's definitely a classic album, by far the best hardcore album I've ever heard, though I'm far from an expert on that genre, especially these days.

"Demon Cleaner", now there's a classic Kyuss track, one of my favourites without a doubt.

Heard any more information about the Opeth tour?

I put this post in the Concert Review Thread, but I think it should be put in here as well, so-

Okay, I went and saw Deftones for the fist time last week, so I thought I'd share some thoughts on that. Having been a fan since '98 and never having seen them live, there was a lot of anticipation for the night. Apparently, Murderdolls were supposed to be the support band originally. Deftones claim that them getting removed from the bill was nothing to do with them but was the promoters decision, whereas MD say that it was Deftones themselves who were responsible, and that maybe they were too scared to play with them (not likely, more just common sense probably). Having seen some of Murderdolls set a few days later I wasn't exactly disappointed that they didn't play that night now.

After a brief hassle involving picking up my ticket from the venue box office, I was ready for a really rocking night.

Aussie hard rockers Brace opened, and these guys sound better all the time. Featuring some of the members of cult rockers Henry's Anger, these guys were pretty cool and have a heap of potential. The sound for them was also far better than for most supports there as well, IMO (though, some people complain about the venue but I love its intimacy, location and vibe). I look forward to seeing these guys more in the future, they have some great rock material.

Texan rockers Sparta were up next, and delivered a great set. They interacted really well with the crowd, and while a few people were a little indifferent to them, most members of the audience thoroughly enjoyed their 45-50-minute set. (I saw the guys on two other occasions this week and they were great every time). Some well-written tracks and melodic vocals, and some killer musicianship helped these guys really deliver, they had a fantastic feel and vibe to their set. Great to see the spirit of At The Drive-In still alive and kicking.

After a fairly lengthy delay, Deftones took the stage. Chino Moreno looked a little vacant and somewhat wasted but you could still tell they were ready to rock, especially as many members of the audience had never seen them before. The band opened with "Root" and "Nosebleed" from the "Adrenaline" album, and the crowd were in a frenzy. I spent the whole set in front of bassist Chi who really started to feel it and connect with the crowd. Just as I was taking a breather from a furious opening, the band literally launched into monster hit "My Own Summer (Shove It)" to an incredibly loud reaction. It was a great rendition, though the band involved the crowd a great deal in the track, they're probably a little tired of playing it every night and now decide to mix it up somewhat. After that, though, the moshpit was going nuts and even people up on the balcony were moshing and feeling the power of the performance. Chino spent the whole song standing over the crowd, screaming like a bastard and getting the crowd thoroughly involved. At this stage the whole auidence was buzzing and really enjoying every song.

One of my favourite tracks from "Around The Fur" followed, "Lotion", so I was stoked to hear that, after which Chino mentioned that ATF is his favourite album of theirs. The powerful opening riff of "Feiticeira" signalled yet another moshpit frenzy. After the track ended, many of the lights went out and Chino grabbed a guitar. I knew what was coming and a searing rendition of "Change (In The House Of Flies)" followed, with a massive crowd sing-a-long and some passionate reactions from many fans, myself included there. The band banter was interesting throughout the night. Between some songs, Chino would chatter constantly, but other times would say nothing or would make weird rambling noises. Regardless of what he'd done before the show, though, his voice still sounded great, and he told us that they wuld have a new album out in May.

More killer songs followed, with the heavy "Bored" pleasing the old school fans like myself, and Chino going nuts and even singing a little of Gorillaz' "Clint Eastwood" in the breakdown. More songs from "Adrenaline" and "Around The Fur" followed, with songs like "Lifter" and "Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away)" engaging the crowd and having them sing along word for word. Chino looked a little mad when he asked all the lights to be turned off for the latter song and they all went out but one. Chino reacted by giving the lighting people a less-than-friendly gesture, much to the enjoyment of the crowd. By this stage I was covered with sweat and the water that was being sprayed on us by the venue employees, but I couldn't care less.

The drum intro to "Around The Fur" got one of the loudest reactions of the night and it sounded great, the whole band really seem to like palying the track live. Tracks like "Mascara" and "Korea", with its monster guitar work followed, keeping the crowd on edge. I was also most pleased to hear "Digital Bath" played live, a real favourite of mine. Cue another massive, intense crowd sing-a-long for that track. A few times between tracks myself and others would call loudly for "7 Words", and shortly after the band obliged, tearing into the song with a real intensity. Hearing a few thousand people scream "Suck, suck, suck, suck, suck......" a number of times is something to behold and a credit to Deftones that they could still induce that type of reaction despite the feverish reaction to the set the whole night. I was sceaming "Shut up you don't know me......" so loud it was no wonder my voice was shot by the end of the night.

Chino then said that they had a special guest they wanted to bring out. I immediately thought it would be someone to assist in performing "Headup" but instead Xzibit appeared and a kick arse version of "Back To School (Mini Maggitt)" followed, though you couldn't hear Xzibit much in some places. Still, his appearance just whipped the crowd into even more of a frenzy and the song kicked major arse.

Shortly after, the band said goodnight, with Chi agreeing with Chino's earlier comments that it had been too long between visits, and said they'd play here very three months if they could, something the crowd definitely agreed with, with some very loud cherring. We knew they'd be back, though, as the lights were still out, and shortly after Abe came back on stage and then the rest of the band followed, and a killer rendition of "Headup" rocked the entire crowd and closed the night, with the whole crowd yelling "Walk into this world, with you head up high" at a ridiculous volume. It was a very, very intense song and the perfect way to close the set with its energy. Almost the enitire crowd were exhausted but very entertained by what they had just seen.

Overall, a great show and one that I'll remember for a long time. A few of the riffs sounded a little samey live, and while there are venues with slightly better sound and lighting, it was more than adequate and I didn't hear a single complaint walking out of the venue. Chino's frequent physical interaction with the crowd also helped matters and engaged the audience who were very into Deftones live, IMO.

I get the indication the band aren't crazy about the "White Pony" album and it's less heavy, more experimental and intricate feeling. They played less songs from it than the other two albums and the same thing happened when I saw them at the Big Day Out festival two days later. Anyway, just thought that was interesting to note there, people.

While Stef (guitarist) doesn't do a whole lot on stage, and DJ Frank Delgado plays a pretty minimal role in their live show, the others were connecting with the crowd and Chi comes across as a great person in particular. His passionate playing and backing vocals add a lot to the Deftones live show.

Okay, I went and saw Soulfly/Hatebreed on Saturday night, so I'll share a few thoughts about that show.

Interestingly, for an Over 18's show, there was no one checking ID's on the way in. Not that that is particularly relevant, but I just thought it was worth noting, though the age restriction doesn't affect me.

Local boys Karnivool opened the show. They were a more melodic outfit than I was expecting. The crowd was a little lukewarm to them at times, but they had some decent tunes. They were a little generic, but they're a young band looking for exposure and they tried damn hard. I'll give them a 5 (out of 10).Their sound was also not perfect, but we can't blame the band for that.

Hatebreed were on next to a huge reaction. Jamey Jasta is an entertaining frontman, and knows how to get a crowd going and really moving. Their set list was fairly typical but they put on a pretty intense show and the crowd was really digging them. Loads of energy from both the band and the crowd made for a very entertaining set. (8). "I Will Be Heard" and the "Satisfaction...." material were real highlights.the moshpit was in a frenzy.

After a few delays, Soulfly took the stage and played a set that was a healthy mix of all three albums, although I'm not very familiar with their latest. The best reactions of the night came when they played some old Sepultura and Nailbomb tunes. Some of the band's riffs and songs sound a little samey live, but when Max Cavalera started to get into it, the crowd knew it. His stepson, Ritchie, even joined the band to help them perform "Bleed". "Eye For An Eye" was definitely a highlight, and "Last Of The Mohicans" sounded great. One complaint was that their set was a little on the short side, around an hour and ten minutes (give or take a few minutes), but the moshpit was wild and the crowd loved it. It was great seeing a true metal legend live again, so that's always going to make seeing a show like that worthwhile, and some cool rhythms always gained a crowd reaction. The fairly intimate venue was also a bonus. (7.5).

Recently I discovered this underground band, they're about the best thing ever.

Yall KNOW this is a wicked beyond wicked band! We aren't talking about sissy music here. The only people listening to this stuff are people who(for the most part)understand and appreciate good hard metal! Their first cd was raw and unspoiled. As their second cd, this one has the proper elements of growth, loudness, and fearlessness! They have nothing to prove to the metal community that they haven't already proven to the world. Haters...go on and keep hating! I love this band! I unwrapped it before noon on my lunch break the day it came out and loved it from the first 2 seconds! Just for the record, "Skin Ticket" is one of the most moving songs I've EVER heard from any band.

Slipknot write songs like left behind I can relate to and they keep metal the way it should be. This is one of the best bands ever.

Slayer- Angel Of Death.
Deftones- Elite.
Soilwork- Neurotica Rampage.
Will Haven- Carpe Diem.
Pantera- I'm Broken.
Fear Factory- Leechmaster.
Helmet- In The Meantime.
Helloween- Future World.
Giants Of Science- Marcia Brady.
Down- New Orleans Is A Dying Whore.
Corrosion Of Conformity- Clean My Wounds.
The Scorpions- Rock You Like A Hurricane.
In Flames- Biosphere.

I think I'll have to make more than one compilation.

I have the Bonus Track edition, so I must have those, though to tell you the truth I haven't listened to that album in ages so I honestly can't remember. That album has its moments of brilliance, IMO, but is kind of forgettable after a while, some of it just sounds really half-hearted.

Did they open with "Desire To Fire" at their Melbourne show? 'Cause that's what they opened with in Sydney.

Yeah I'm pretty sure they did.

Then Ten Tonne Hammer then Blood Sweat Tears, but I can't remember, it was awhile ago and I wasn't really paying any attention.

Wasn't paying attention? Damn you.

I also read today that tickets for Opeth's Sydney show are $35, pretty cheap for the sort of show they put on, IMO.

Aussie_Outlaw

When do they go on sale?

And yes Opeth for $35 = cheap. $35AU = $17US.

 I figured it'd be around $45

Just a few random thoughts, since I haven't really been around this thread in a while.

...Waiting for the release of the Haunted's new album and DVD. Their last one was friggin' impressive...and from what I've heard of this one, it looks even better.

...If you guys haven't seen Opeth live, it's a damn shame. If only they'd played "Master's Apprentice," I'd have been in heaven.

...Wondering if I'll ever get word of Life of Agony releasing a DVD of the live shows they did in NYC, or hopefully (and eventually) a new album any time soon.

...Speaking of Opeth, I ordered the re-releases of Morningrise, My Arms, Your Hearse, and Orchid. I'm dying to get them in the mail...damn you Amazon.com!

...New BLS shortly. And Ozzy does vocals on one of the tracks.

...Heard rumors that the Iommi/Anselmo project has fallen out. If it's true, then damn does it suck. "Time is Mine" was killer on the Iommi disc. Sabbath-type music w/ Pantera-type vocals? Damn would it work.

...Also, I'm still dying to hear any news about a forthcoming Sabbath album.

...In Flames newest album just didn't meet my expectations.

...Damn, I'm hoping Ozzfest doesn't suck this year.

...My last few record-store pickups were Daylight Dies' No Reply and Six Feet Under's Warpath. Damn, I'm glad that my g/f has digital cable...b/c Daylight Dies' CD is friggin' awesome. And Six Feet Under's ain't bad either.

...Really can't think of anything else to say. I have a favorite new website...www.swedishmetal.net. Check it out if you got a sec.

Looks like the DANZIG dvd is just about done! The dvd will contain videos from '92-'93. Some great unreleased stuff such as the "Sistinas" and "Bodies" videos. Also some outakes of "Dirty Black Summer" and "How The Gods Kill". Incredible stuff!!!! Hopefully this will be out soon! As soon as a release date is confirmed it will be posted here. Wizz, new Anthrax out soon, sounds similiar to Volume 8 from what I've heard, which IMO is good.
And No I haven't seen Opeth, I live too far away from the city, but this year I'm right in the middle, 5 minutes from the Center.

I've seen the delux edition of Morninrise in Borders down here, it's got a bonus track and a video from what i remember.

Haunted/BLS/Opeth are touring Oz this year. Hopefully we get MFTB also, that'd be a sweet year. Maybe a Maiden + Anthrax tours at the end to finish it off. I'm hoping.

Yeah I have In Flames' new release "Reroute" and frankly it's not up with Colony, I picked up Whoracle for Xmas (Deluxe Edition) and it owns. Jotun! :headbang:

Ticketmaster/Ticketek?

Who's distributing tickets, then I can go and look.

Ah well I'll hunt the Aussie/Opeth forums and find out anyway.

Yeah i know it's over 18. My brother may be getting a fake ID to get in. Ours is at the Corner. I still think they could have sold out Festival Hall down here.

I do believe so. Three VHS so far, Danzig 1, 2, and 3(uncensored video for the song HTGKill that came in the box set with the cd). I'm fairly sure that none of those releases have been transfered to DVD.

I've got 1, 2 and also 3 on a bootleg with multiple other videos, interviews and live performances. I'm quite excited about this. Oh yes. :wired:

Black Label Society will kick arse, the exact dates and venues haven't been confirmed yet, but the tour is from April 21-25, which probably means they'll only hit Sydney, Melbourne and probably Brisbane. Zakk Wylde would be fucking amazing to watch live, people.

And I'm stoked at the price of the Opeth show.

Who exactly are Opeth touring w/ over there? Here there were two bands who I'll say were decidedly Goth in style. And boy did they get tortured by a decidedly pro-death metal crowd in Philly.

Opeth were good, though. The other two bands though really, really were not up to par.

As for The Haunted. Downunder Tour dates are:

THE HAUNTED "One Kill Wonder" Australian Tour March 2003

with special guests Blood Duster

March 12th Adelaide Uni Bar with Diatribe
March 14th Melbourne The Corner with Earth
March 15th Sydney The Metro with Daysend
March 16th Brisbane The Arena with Minus Life

And I hear Tickets for those gigs are $35 also

I'll second that. Manson's day, IMO, is over.

Alas, he's still got his fans. If people are going to get back into him, then Golden Age of the Grotesque had better be pretty damned good.

Wasn't he supposed to write a book or something based on his "trio" of albums? Guess that never saw the light of day...heh.

And oh yeah, any "metal" magazine you can buy in Wal-Mart is not a magazine worth buying. Not only is it going to be filled with crap, it's going to be a month late.

Well, I bought Metal Hammer the other week, 'cause I had a three-hour train trip to look forward to, and desperately needed something to read. They have some quality material in there about bands like Opeth (and the issue I read had a cool few pages on Danzig/The Misfits as well), but just a heap of utter shite. I don;t want to read about Murderdolls in a supposedly metal magazine, thanks.

I've finally decided: I'll order Sons of Northern Darkness and Grand Declaration of War from Amazon (free shipping!), and while I'm waiting for that, I'll buy Crimson Thunder from the record store near my house (I know they have it...it's still a mystery why they don't carry nearly any black metal...or Strapping Young Lad...) so I can listen to that while I wait for the other two to arrive.

Hey Outlaw, I just heard Riders of the Storm on one of my digital channels; great song. Even though I've only heard it once, I'd say it's better than The Unforgiving Blade and the title track.

SBD, I heard you mention Burzum earlier. I liked one of the early songs (War, I think), but what does Varg's new stuff sound like? Just because the guy comes across as a total nutcase (albeit an intelligent one) doesn't mean I shouldn't consider buying any of his stuff in the future, I guess. :\

On the topic of metal mags, Terrorizer looks okay, but it's probably too expensive for me. :( Do they ever give out sample CDs when you get a subscription?
