Vintersorg is fucking amazing.

I'd recommend an album, but I advise you get ALL of them.

On another note, I've been getting into 1349 and Gorgoroth a lot lately, and coincidentally, they're touring together. Only, their tour is an all european tour.

Shame I live in SoCal where the only bands that play often are like Yellowcard and Blink 182 and shit.

We went and caught Some Kind Of Monster before the gig,and it was excellent.Anyone else seen it? The parts where Lars and Jamaes argue are seriously funny.

Anyway,on to the MH show-

Switchblade were on first and they were very energetic and were well received by most of the crowd. I even noticed Adam Duce upstairs nodding in approval.Pretty decent.

Contrive were the main support, and while they have a cool sound they weren't that well received.Andy Haug is a decent drummer, but their bass player copped loads of heckling. They weren't awful, but I've seen em' play better as well. They're just kinda average anyway.

After a huge wait, Machine Head owned the crowd from the second "Imperium" kicked in.Hell, there were even circle pits starting before they even hit the stage!!!!!! "Seasons Of Wither" was next and ruled as well, and Robb said it would be available here in a few weeks. Whether it is part of a re-release of TTAOE or whatever I'm not certain, but it's a damn good new track that they put on the US edition of the album.

They played stuff from each of their albums- "Bulldozer","The Blood,The Sweat,The Tears","Take My Scars" (FUCKING OWNED), and loads of others.

"Descend The Shades Of Night" started the encore, and sounded pretty damn good, followed by "Davidian", and the place erupted. After that,I figured it couldn't get any better, but then Robb gave us a choice. He read out three album titles, and whichever got the loudest reaction, they would play a song from. First was Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" (huge reaction), then Metallica's "Ride The Lightning" (even louder) and Sepultura's "Chaos A.D." (about the same as RTL). So they ripped into an awesome <a href="http://www.ntsearch.com/search.php?q=cover&v=56">cover</a> of Seps' "Territory", which ruled, and then played some of Pantera's "Another Level" and "Walk", Slayer's "Raining Blood" which had the mosh in a frenzy, and last of all some of Motley Crue's "Live Wire", which Robb thought was pretty damn funny. (BTW,I was in the distinct minority who actually knew the last song). They then closed with "Block", which was also fucking awesome.

Overall, easily one of the best gigs I've seen and the band certainly earned the numerous "MACHINE FUCKING HEAD" chants that went on throughout their set anyway. It seriously shat on their set with Slayer a few years back as well.

LoG are pretty good. Proved themselves to be one trick ponies though. Rather than consistently produce 'good' albums I'd rather bands take a chance and broaden their creative horizons not remain stagnant and become complacent which is something LoG have obviously done.

Look at Vargy Vikernes, he may have recorded some of his albums months apart but each succeeding album bettered it's predecessor...until he started doing electrogayonic keyboard poofterismic stuff whilst in the nick (At least he had the testes to wipe his slate clean and do something fresh in his eyes). Or even Mastodon, who have trimmed the fat off their sound and come out better for it with their new album.

At least kids and metal n00bs who get into LoG always start to dig deeper when they require something with a little more subtance.

Latest purchases on this lovely public holiday (up the Doggies),

Deeds of Flesh - Reduced to Ashes
Decapitated - Winds of Creation

just listened to "Extension of the Wish" by Andromeda today, it's awesome. it's nothing -too- special, but the guitar is awesome. unfortunately, a lot of the album is fancy guitar work, and it gets to be quite a demanding listen, and not in a good way. it just wears me out too much. but it's definitely worth a listen.

Well Slayer and Slipknot was last night. After fucking missing Mastodon and Hatebreed due to the longest queue I have ever seen, we got in just before Slayer began. Both Slayer and Slipknot were brilliant, great gig. And luckily I'm seeing Mastodon in 2 weeks anyway, in a smaller venue. Hatebreed I have seen already anyway, So I'm not too annoyed about that either.

I was at the smae Gig last night as well.

I started queing at about 4:30 and managed to get in fine to see Mastodon and Hatebreed.

I'd heard a few tracks of Mastodon's 'Levithan' and thought they sounded prety good. Live, they where fucking brilliant. They only got a 20 minute set, but they managed to show what a great band they are within their short set time. Second favourite band of the night for me. I'm seeing them again in Los Angeles with Slayer and Killswitch Engage on the Jager tour. I'm gonna buy some of their stuff before hand this time, therefore I should enjoy them even more seeing as I thought they where great live without hearing hardly any stuff.

Hatebreed where a huge disapointment. Being a Hatebreed fan, I've now seen them twice and have been very dissapointd with them both times. They sound great on record, but something about their sound was just really poor. Me and my brother know more a less every song of off 'Rise Of Brutality', and some of the songs they played we couldn't make out till the chorus becasue they sounded so bad. They got gradualy better as the set went on, but I wasn't impresed.

Slayer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What can I say, my god they blew the roof of the Apolo, everything they done was amazing and exactly right. The 3rd time I've seen them and the set list was the best it has ever been. My brother even balcked out during their set as he got so excited, but after a quick glass of water he was fully revived and back in the pit by the time they played 'Raining Blood'. The affect where the blood rains down during Raining blood was amazing as well, Hanneman was a proper state. Esily a 5 star performance and one of my personal favourite live performances ever.

The night seemed like a real anti-climax for me. How the fuck Slipknot got to play last I don't know. In my eyes it's a disgrace. One of things is that all the Slipknot fans seemed to respect Slayer, and there was plenty of them in the pit, but most of teh Slayer fans didn't give a fuck about Slipknot and left before they came on. Now I expect the Slipknot fans would have stayed to watch Slayer and payed their respects to the Metal Gods.

Anyway, I think Slipknot's new album isn't bad, but I think their old stuff is prety poor. I couldn't really get into them and there was a few songs I enjoyed, but most of them I was just bored for. Some of teh songs that I know sounded really crap and out of time. The vocals where prety poor for quite a few songs as well. Heretic Anthem which I know quite well, sounded just like a wall of noise as I could mak none of it out. Overall they weren't bad, but they could never live up to Slayer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well if we compare Megadeth's current release against similiar artists it kicks the shit out of St Anger, loses to Anthrax's We've Come For You All (by a fair bit) but still has a few decent tracks on it. Just the emotion in the middle/back end of the album is a bit of a downer.

And whats wrong with Risk? It's a quality Rock album, not a metal one but not a bad album anyway.

I agree:

St Anger = SHIT
The System has failed = Ok
We've Come For You All = Awesome

Risk is a really useless album, there's nothing special in that one nor one song who deserves to be remembered, it just explores in the most annoying face of Megadeth plus the voice from Mustaine sounds awful with the type of songs in the album.

Why the hell are Slipknot headlining those shows?

I know, it's a disgrace for metal legends like Slayer have wank kiddie metal play after them.

The tour was advertised as 'The Unholy Alliance' as it's two bands who you would think would headline they're own tours. On the British posters Slipknots name was put above Slayer's, which was basd enough for me. I thought they would rotate who played last each night, but in England it wasn't the case.

When I went to Germany the tour was advertised there and Slayer where the headliners every night as they where across the rest of Europe. The UK was the only country that Slipknot played last in, which majorly pissed me off as for me and my mate watching Slipknot after Slayer was a major anti-climax to a great night.

Anyway Slipknot played for an hour and Slayer got an hour and a half! So i'm not gonna complain to much.

I don't think it's that good. I thought One Kill Wonder was better, the only one I thought wasn't as good as Revolver is The Haunted Made Me Do It. but then their albums don't show very much variety either. if I lined up their albums and played them on a big MD or Windows playlist, I probably wouldn't know which album is which, other than for memorizing a bunch of the songs.

not a bad band though, and not a bad album. not worth the money they're asking for it though, which is why I'm only downloading it. It was just so great being so close to the band, my mate cut his finger on one of Bill Kelliher's guitar strings for fuck's sake. They finished with Iron Tusk going straight into March Of The Fire Ants which was breathtaking, and then they came back on to do a cover of 'Emerald' which is on Remission and a Melvins song. So, I'm watching Headbanger's Ball, and I see a commercial for The Haunted's new album.

Am I mistaken, or are there actually clean vocals on it?

And if there are clean vocals on it, does the music suffer?

If the answer is yes to either of these two questions, I sincerely doubt I'll be getting this album.

Also, I'm waiting for an acquaintance to lend me the Cannibal Corpse box set.

I dunno why, but I've just been in a severe CC mood lately.

Also, yesterday I saw a copy of Killswitch Engage's End of Heartache on sale at Wal-Mart yesterday for less than $10.00.

Let me repeat that, I saw KsE's EoH at WAL-MART for less than $10.00.

Yes there are clean vocals, reminiscent of Robbie Williams (!)

The music does not suffer. It's a superb modern thrash + sprinklings of hardcore album (I'm talking real HC, not 'lets play chuggy metal riffs and climax with a massive breakdown' HC....I'm talking NYHC sorta flavour).

You're not the only one. The Walmart by my house has both "As the Palaces Burn" and "Ashes of the Wake" for about $10.

ANYWAYS.

Saturday, at House of Blues, I saw Children of Bodom, Fera Factory, Lamb of God, and (kind of) Throwdown.

Throwdown opened, we timed it perfectly, and arrived at House of Blues right after Throwdown finished their set. (:))

CoB were immense. Alexi Laiho, ever since getting into metal, has always been one of my musical heroes. That man has god given gift. They finished their half-hour set (I was pissed that it was only half an hour) with "Hate Me!" which ruled.

Fear Factory played next, and they played a wide 45-minute set including songs from (I think) every one of their albums. I'm not a big Fear Factory fan, but they played some of their new songs, and they weren't that bad. Also, their singer was good guy, with a nice sense of humour. Because of Fear Factory, there were a lot of arrogant 25-40 year old men who were standing along the outside wall of the bottom floor. They were trying not to let the kids (18yrs and younger) through to the pit/floor. They were all fags. Luckily they left after Fear Factory and allowed most of the bottom floor to be people like me, and big sweaty hairy men in the pit for Lamb of God.

Speaking of Lamb of God, they were loads of fun. They definitely played to the crowd, and played a heavy set. They finished it off with "Black Label" like they always do, and did their signature "wall of death" thing where they split the crowd in two, and have them charge each other. I didn't take part in that. Call me a pussy, or call me smart. We were leaving right as they did that because the House of Blues was packed with people, and right outside Disneyland was lighting off their fireworks. (House of Blues is in Downtown Disney...basically ar Disneyland)

All in all, I had a blast, and it was worth the $30 I payed for the tickets.

I went to the same show at the Granada in Lawrence, KS. Throwdown wasn't very bad, surprisingly. I thought they'd suck. Children of Bodom played their songs really fast, probably due to their limited set. Fear Factory stole the show. I wasn't too excited about seeing them, but they were great. I'm surprised they played some SoaNM stuff. Lamb of God was ok. Their set wasn't as good as it was at Ozzfest, so we left early and went to a bar down the street. :happysad:

I've got to pick to out of the three - Dillinger Escape Plan, Neurosis and Helmet. Which two should I go see? Haven't seen one of them live so I'm not entirely sure what to expect live. Help me out here.

Also, how good is the new Haunted album? I don't own any of their albums despite hearing songs from all of them. Which one should I get first?
Neurosis and Helmet, I'd say.

On further inspection, it's something I've never actually heard of yet at the same time it is really really familiar..... Anthrax - Black Lodge. Having only recently acquired The Sound of White Noise, is there anywhere else I may have heard this song?

Throwdown opened, we timed it perfectly, and arrived at House of Blues right after Throwdown finished their set. (:))

Throwdown are class. They were better before the guitarist and singer swapped jobs around, but they are shitloads better than Lamb of God in my opinion. Still, its what you like really.

Two fans were stabbed by a security guard at the Cincinnati date on Cradle Of Filth / Arch Enemy / Bleeding Through's MTV US tour earlier this week.

Ten minutes into Bleeding Through's set on Monday night (8th November) during the MTV Headbangers Ball tour, bouncer Donald Germany is alleged to have stabbed concert goers Chris Alsip and James Shestina. The show was immediately stopped and Bleeding Through went to hospital with the victims. Before leaving the stage, frontman Brandan Schieppati told the crowd that "A close friend of the band's has been stabbed. I believe everyone should be welcome at a Bleeding Through show."

21 year old Germany is out on $2000 bail and is claiming self defence.

"We just panicked because we heard he was being beaten and stomped," his mother, Diamond Star, is reported to have said. "I have never had any problems with him."

Police have also arrested concertgoer Gregory Gonzales, for assaulting Mr. Germany.

Listened to both of my new CDs in their entirety.

I really like the new CoF. Some parts were disappointing at first, but it's really beginning to grow on me. Like the song from the title track with that new guest singer chick; I was like, what the fuck is this?!? I didn't like it at first, because she's softer than that fat chick who used to sing for them. But I really like it now. Probably one of my favorite parts of the album. This new one is a little softer than what they usually do, but I really like how they sound when they incorporate more melody into their music. Gilded Cunt is an awesome song, too. I like this new CD a lot better than Damnation and a Day.

I wasn't disappointed in Zyklon - Aeon, either. It was sort of a surprise that a few of the songs are slower, kind of like how Morbid Angel does a lot of songs. But it's really fucking awesome. Their new singer sounds good; he sounds like a mix between Glen Benton and Rob Zombie in a way. I can't say whether I prefer him or the guy they had on World Ov Worms though. Both sound pretty cool. Core Solution and Psyklon Aeon are probably my favorite tracks from this one.

And I heard that Stuck Mojo are looking for a label for their new record. A great week for music, at least for me.

I liked it a lot too, but I wish it had some guitar in it...if they could have just had one song like Idioglossia or Rope Ends in it, I would be happier. As it is, it's still entertaining. And that part where the guy is about to drive the car always make me laugh...

-- Dimmu Borgir, which I'm rediscovering after listening to it almost constantly for a month and a half and putting it down for quite a long time... I love doing that, 'cause then the music kicks so much ass again once I'm not used to it anymore.

-- Opeth... same story as Dimmu Borgir, basically, except I listened to Opeth constantly until about a year and a half ago. ....so going back to them kicks even more ass.

-- Trollmann av Ildtoppberg... dron-ish ambient doom metal.

-- Nevermore... everyone knows what they are.

-- Carnal Forge... Swedish death metal, like The Haunted if they kicked 10x more ass.

-- Iron Maiden... still nice to re-visit that old stuff, and the Rock in Rio CDs always kick my ass, and I'm finding that those are the best CDs to listen to when I'm drinking/drunk.

-- Dimension Zero... death metal like Carnal Forge, except way more emotional.

-- Cradle of Filth... in anticipation of the big concert in 322 hours from now.

-- Dio... can't stop listening to the Master of the Moon album 'cause the vocals kick ass, and it sounds sort of like the new Maiden album.

-- Agalloch... um, don't know what I can say specifically about them... I love everything about them, they fucking blow my mind.

-- Vintersorg... same as Agalloch, but to a slightly lesser extent.

You know? The original keyboardist from Dream Theater?

Now it's spooky music. Not scary but ambient. I can't listen to it for over anything like 40 minutes but for some reason I always want to listen to it. It's the kind of music you'd drive around playing at about 3am when no-one else is on the road and you're driving thru the country type area at about 80km/h. Just cruisin.

Very odd.

I havent been listening to alot of metal recently due to the fact I have about 100 hours of unlistened radio shows from the 50's. Mostly Dragnet and Gunsmoke. Ah how I love radio serials. I'm odd like that.

Corrosion Of Conformity have found themselves back on my playlist with the onset of Summer.

And just in time, too. As their website (although it looks like it's been some months ago) apparently says that they're in the studio again. Which is awesome...since we're not getting any new Down or Pantera anytime soon (i.e. we'll never be getting either), COC putting something new out looks mighty damned fine to me.

And real quick:

It's been some months coming, but I finally managed to get my hands on some discs that I've been wanting for a little while now. After getting the new Danzig (which I'm still "meh" over. Yeah, it's kind of a return to what we all love from his...it's just not as good, IMO, as I Luciferi), I managed to get my hands on Fear Factory's Archetype, which is tons better than their last effort (and it's gotten mixed reviews...to which I say :wtf:, it's good, goddammit. Damned good), got Megadeth's newest (again, better than the last one. Although I really dug TWNAH), and got Lamb of God's newest as well (again, really damned good).

Like I said, been a few months late, but hey. Cut a guy a break. I've got a kid, dammit. Which means:

$$$ + time = scarce.

As far as Maiden and Priest, A_O, where would Brave New World stand? Because before I heard that, I never even gave Maiden a shot. I didn't really like 'em. And BNW got me to respect them and give them another chance, to which, I must say, I'm glad that I gave. Because while there is still some stuff from them that I'm not overwhelmingly in love with, I do give them their respectful due now. And I stem it all from buying Brave New World.

I've been really lazy lately, so I don't feel like typing anything new just for these forums... but I went to the Arch Enemy/Cradle of Filth/Himsa/Bleeding Through concert in Calgary (...Alberta, Canada -- for those of you who don't know, I guess...) and I feel it's an experience that needs to be documented. ...I already wrote a big scoop on it for my blurty journal, but I'll throw a little snippet in here... it's not like a full-fledged concert review or anything, more about my own experience, but there's some things in it that I think a few people might like to read.

...I also met a lot of band members, but I won't post the snippet about that, unless anyone wants me to... though I have to say Sarah Jezebel from Cradle of Filth is about the coolest person I've ever met. ...coolest metaller, anyways. I shouldn't say coolest person... but she stayed out for a while and threw snowballs around with us... not one complaint about the cold... it was minus-11 celcius, so a lot of others were bitching...

...so we got to the front of the line and started chanting -- "we-want-cradle! we-want-cradle! we-want-cradle! we-want-cradle! we-want-cradle!" ...i didn't chant as much as everybody, just because it struck me as so... immature maybe? ...no. well, cultist i guess. i don't usually join into chants like that. ...but whatever, fuck it, i chanted a little bit towards the end, and then we got in, and i bought my shirt right away. they were sold out of cradle of filth stuff because they re-stocked in edmonton and had no more stuff for calgary, so i bought an "arch enemy -- anthems of rebellion" shirt instead. ...impeccable choice, it's a really nice shirt, and extra laaaarge, motherfuckers. ...pre-washed, as well. so it won't shrink as much... perrrrfect. ...anyways, i made my way up to the front, and got in front of where the bassist would be. ...we waited about 30 minutes, and i thought about getting water, but i wasn't leaving my place, even for the first band. ...so i stayed and started feeling better, my feet and arms thawed out, back didn't hurt as much... himsa gets on the stage!

...oh, fuck, they were wicked. they played six songs off their only album, courting tragedy and disaster... my favourite one was "it's nights like this that keep us alive"... i couldn't stop thinking about that song all week before the concert, and they played it, i went fucking apeshit. ...got really sweaty by the end of himsa, but who gives a shit, it's a concert, you gotta get sweaty. ...it was mostly just my face, i had my jacket with me but tied around me... i did not wanna have to use coatcheck. ...i took a couple pictures of them, they were an awesome act, and then we waited about an hour before arch enemy came on, so they had to cancel two songs from their set, but who gives a fuck... well, i do slightly, but they were fucking great. ...angela gossow instructed us to "tear the roof off this fucking place, you motherfuckers!" ...and we did just that. everyone there was so fucking pumped, i'd been waiting two and a half years for them, and oh man, did they deliver. ...angela was all over the stage, in front of us a lot, and from what i can remember, they played...

tear down the walls
enemy within
silent wars
we will rise
dead eyes see no future
the first deadly sin
-- can't remember the song from here --
...annnnd... oh, goddamn, what else did they play? it was something off the anthems of rebellion album, anyways...

...and angela did a really, really good job on vocals. ...ravenous! that was the last one they played, okay, so i had the wrong album... but i gave it all for these guys, and got four or five pictures. ...oh fuck, it was great. angela and michael got right in front of me for the solo in "we will rise"... holy shit, that was a great moment. ...you know, when it goes -- we will riiiise... dododoooo... dododoooo... dododoooo-oooo-oooo... and this awesome extended guitar solo, like most of theirs are, kicks in... it's fucking amazing.

...so then bleeding through came on, and i was tired by the time bleeding through came on, really tired and sweaty... so i put away my camera for them and i didn't care about getting their pictures, and managed to still pay attention to their whole setlist, and it was pretty good, not as good as himsa... but the vocalist has a ton of enthusiasm and does a lot of flips and cartwheels all over the stage, marta was really enthusiastic too and did a lot of singing along and head-banging, and overall, it was a really good setlist. ...they only played seven songs, i think they had to cut one too because they were running late, but oh well, eh? ...it wasn't exactly who i came to see. for the last few songs of this, it was... really hectic... i had to keep pushing this big fat cocksucker behind me, who had his elbow on my head and spikes/studs digging into my back, and i finally got really tired and couldn't push anymore, so i waited until bleeding through was done, barely managed to take off my jacket and throw it over the barricade with all the pushing and shoving, but i was all psyched for cradle of filth, and then realized... i was about to pass out. ...i'd been awake for 20 hours, hadn't eaten in 27, and i smoked too much weed earlier. ...fucking greeeeat.

...so i got pulled out by security 'cause i asked them to, went to the bathroom and puked whatever was in my system from 27 hours ago, and then went to get a couple bottles of water, which felt much better right away, and pushed back through the crowd to the fourth row or so, but still couldn't do it with all the pushing and shoving... so i walked around the perimeter for cradle of filth and tried to quietly enjoy it, but well, it didn't work too well. ...so the band i really came to see, i sort of... missed. it wasn't the greatest experience. ...but the rest of the night was fucking amazing, so i'm not that disappointed about it, and i'm quite confident that i got atleast a couple decent pictures of them.

*excuse the complete lack of grammar... the whole thing on my blurty journal was 20-25 paragraphs, so I couldn't possibly have been fucked...

Nemesis can you provide me with a Gwar best of, something like 60-80minute long best song from Gwar?

Thanks.

-Dave

I feel I want some more and have no idea what to download.

Sure thing:

Americanized
Sick of You
Gor-Gor
The Road Behind
Saddam A-Go Go
Jack the World
Meat Sandwich
Whargoul
The Private Pain of Techno Destructo (get the original Star Trek version if you can...also, the very first version of this song was named Techno Song on Hell-O, but I think this one is better)
Back to Iraq
Fuckin' an Animal
Immortal Corruptor
A Song of Words

There are a few I've left out, but that's about the best I could do as far as including all of their albums (except for War Party, since I haven't heard it yet).

Also, if you're into the rare stuff, they have quite a few side bands, soundtracks, demos, etc. to look up. They're all listed in the GWAR FUQ on their site.

Lord Gore:

The Autophagous Orgy

Aweesssomeee album. Better than I expected. If you like Gorelord, Necrophagia, Cannibal Corpse or anything like that, you'll likely like this too. I expected basic death metal cookie-monster growls, but it has more of a Gorelord type vocal sound. Mixing the growls with black metal type vocals...works out well.

The content is as you'd expect. Check out the album cover, which I've been advised not to post.

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drf300/f367/f36794rpmn1.

Add a jpg to that in your browser to see it.

So the content rules, obviously.

Also a TON of horror movie soundclips. Most noticable is Return of the Living Dead. :headbang:

Saw Machine Head on Friday , who I'm not a huge fan of, but they blew me away. Really really good , and rocked some kick ass covers including Seps - Territory which was the shizzle .

Last night I saw The Dillenger escape plan at the Uni in Newcastle and they were insanely intense and loud as fuck. great gig , with an utterly mental pit , shame there werent that many people there.

I was looking around soulseek yesterday and I'll pretty much say now that if you want some radiohead go there, but if you're looking for some really obscure stuff it's almost useless.

I'll base myself with WinMX and use soulseek if I can't find it there (not very often).

However there's always FTP, Bittorrent which are superior to P2P.

:wtf:

What do you define as obscure? Examples?

Aussie_Outlaw
December 8th, 2004, 10:57 AM
I'll define obscure as things which don't usually appear on P2P networks like OTR (Old Time Radio), and odd albums like Amen's Slave, hell it barely found Amen's Muzak Before Death.

I know that this is the 'Metal' thread, but i'm interested in what you think of this song. I noticed in SideburnZ's above post a couple of Hatebreed albums and it's quite similar to that. Seeing as a lot of the posts in here are focused mainly on black and death metal, I was just wondering your thoughts on it and hardcore in general are.

Soulseek has got to be the most unusual P2P. I, like BurnZ, have no problem finding almost anything I want on there (no jokes please).

But I have heard many stories like Dave's and all I can do to help is give the old :dunno:....

And hey, Pain of Salvation's Be album is definitely a superb album. However, it is going to take a lot of effort on my end to truly appreciate it. Which is part of the greatness of the band.

Okay, I'm a little stupid when it comes to this stuff. Are FTP-based programs the web-based ones like Audiogalaxy? Because that site kicked ass.

No, FTP is an internet protcol. (file transfer protocol)

HTTP is another protocol (hyper text transfer protocol)

To use FTP you have to have another program (client)

The web is on the HTTP.

Just bought GWAR's War Party CD today. Pretty good. Probably their heaviest one yet...doesn't really have the catchiness of Scumdogs of the Universe, though. I'm impressed, though...it sounds like they're concentrating on playing a lot better (and faster) than they ever have. A riff on one of the songs almost sounds like it was directly lifted from Holy Wars...The Punishment Due. Unoriginal riff writing or not, I was still shocked to hear it from GWAR, of all bands...

One of the funniest lines from the CD: "I screamed out your name...at least what I thought you were called..."

I don't know why, but that cracks me up.

No replies in a WEEK in this thread?

Sheesh...

Let's get some discussion going then.

Seeing as '04 is over in a week, who are your guys' top picks for biggest rookie metal band of the year? Or favorite metal release of the year?

I think the newest band that'll take over is Glass Casket...mixing hardcore with death metal, and throwing in melody. Reason being, they'll drawn in metal fans, as well as hardcore fans. Much like Killswitch Engage.

Best metal release...this is a tougher one. To be honest, I didn't like TOO many releasese, but one that comes to mind is Finntroll - Nattfodd

Discuss.

As for the Aussies Nightwish Tix are now on sale.

I'll be more than likely taking my gf to both Melbourne shows.

Just to warn you, they'll be playing the exact same setlist, with maybe one changed song. I've seen them four times on the current tour, and it seems like there's one "slot" each night to play a different song, which was sort of disappointing. But if it's your first time seeing them, go for both...

I was at a music store yesterday and the metalhead that works there suggested them to me.

It's growing on me. I haven't listened to it since Christmas weekend, because I've been sidetracked with a bunch of the new music I got, but before then, every night I would lay in bed just listening to it. A question for Aussie_Outlaw about Pain Of Salvation.

I've heard a fair bit of their stuff, but only seperate songs, I haven't yet purchased an album. Could you recommend the one I should get first? or tell me how each album differs.

On a slightly different matter, I really like Metal with something a bit different and progressive about it. From Blind Guardian to Symphony X, and Agalloch to Finntroll. So Pain Of Salvation interest in me. But do people have any recommendations for some very obscure stuff I might like. There'snot any particular genre I'm looking for, just something a bit different and progressive which is particuarly powerful. Whether it be Black Metal, Progressive Metal or just Hard Rock I don't mind.

Thanks.

Hmm which PoS album to get...

Currently I'm running around praising BE which came out a few months ago so that'd be #1 on my list.

Then probably something like:
Entropia
The Perfect Element Part I
Remedy Land
One Hour By The Concrete Lake.

Oh and probably put the 12:5 (live album) equal with Entropia.

As for obscure stuff. Mira knows a fair few odd Prog/Power bands. She'll drop in sometime I'm sure.

Aussie_Outlaw

12:5 is acoustic and contains different arrangements than the original songs which is pretty cool. It's not metal by any means since it's pretty much completely acoustic but it's cool.

The thing with PoS is that they're smart, generally running some kind of environmental theme (which is obvious considering the lead singer has a degree in Environmental Science).

Also I reviewed BE in the album review thread a month or so back.

Afterall I'm not going to the Behemoth show in february for two reasons.

1. They're playing with some shitty metalcore bands.
2. I'd rather see them April 23rd, when they play with Nile, Black Dahlia Murder and... KING DIAMOND!

March 11th I'm seeing Black Label Society, most likely. This isn't for sure though.

May 9th, I am seeing Kreator, Death Angel, and Vader. This is certain.

In april I MIGHT see Soilwork, Dark Tranquillity, and Hypocrisy. I might not though, because I'm not really all that much into any of those bands. Although I wouldn't mind seeing DT at all.

I also mught go see Morbid Angel (and soulfly) in february, but that's doubtful.

So, in conclusion, spring is going to be filled with lots of joy for me, because for sure I'm going to two show, and possibly like two more.

I reviewed BE here (http://forums.rajah.com/showpost.php?p=2866603&postcount=594)

Remedy Lane was my first Pain of Salvation album, and it took me a long while to actually get into it (like 6-7 months) probably because I was also being introduced to PoS and to put it simply, they're a fairly odd band.

However from what I read around the traps now Remedy is considered their 3rd/4th string album behind BE/Perfect Element, Entropia THEN Remedy Lane/Concrete Lake.

I would say I like BE better. It's more serious and deeper than Remedy Lane and is must more experimental than Remedy Lane. I guess if you want something else which is really similiar to Remedy you'd go with Perfect Element.

Lets just say they're different styles, completely. Remedy Lane is quite light and well composed musically, while BE is darker, more serious and is a mix of lyrics/music/spoken. With that in mind it's hard to say which is better. Also people criticise BE for it's lack of driving guitars and more piano based.

But I like them both, but like BE more.

Entropia contains more of an Acoustic/piano with a really light, funky moodish type sound, and I find Concrete Lake just not quite upto par with the rest of the stuff musically.

Still Remedy Lane is great.

That's my Megadeth album of choice. I realize that Rust in Peace is their masterpiece, but Peace Sells has a better feel to me. It had a more sinister theme throughout the album, and Good Morning/Black Friday is one of my favorite Megadeth songs.

I caught Hatebreed for the second consecutive day last night.Parkway Drive were really good with loads of energy, good stage presence and they connected with the crowd very well, and I picked up their EP.I thought Last Nerve were kinda average, not as energetic as PWD and the crowd didn't seem as into em'.

Hatebreed were awesome, played for longer and had a better setlist than at BDO or at the Roundhouse a few years back.Loads of old stuff, even some material from 'Under The Knife" got an airing.Closing with "This Is Now' and 'I Will Be Heard" was the ideal way to end it as well.

I also saw Slipknot at Big Day Out.They may be energetic, but that band clearly has at least three more members than it actually needs.Get rid of the Clown for starters.Their sound was complete mush as well.

I got an album by Helmet today. :p That's the only metal album I've bought in months. :\

I must be pretty out of it...I had no idea that Dark Tranquillity had a new album out, it's called 'Character'. Anyone heard if it's any good, at least better than 'Damage Done'?
Guitar world said it's their best album ... But that's Guitar World.

Why did you waste money seeing Slipknot...?
.

They were on a festival bill that I had already bought tickets for when they were announced.I didn't pay to see em' at all anyway.

I saw Type O Negative's video for "I Don't Wanna Be Me" and I must say it's not a good video, it's just odd and scary. And I don't mean scary like horror, I mean scary that Type O Negative made such a stupid video as I figured they'd have more sense.

Really, a fat guy dressing a celebrities? :wtf: An to think Britney Spears was one of them. Just an odd awful video.
That video if f'n funny, and i agree with Sideburnz they just don't like to be a "serious" goth band, hell they covered "Summer Breeze" and have a song about cartoon girls Pete would like to nail...

Well that'd make sense, and since I don't know much about Type O I guess I just found it really strange.

Yeah...you can't take them seriously.

The last album especially, very silly. Angry Inch? Or the song about gay men hitting on Peter. The cartoon girls one is nice too.

Good band.

Ulysses Siren is the greatest band to never release an album.

Slipknot were pretty uninspiring last night. Not exactly enthusiastic live, plus stupid intro's and 'ambient' intervals between songs didn't flow too well. Plus the sound was fucking atrocious. Hatebreed won my respect though via stealing the show. Good massive circle pit action too.

How can someone who likes Necrophagist respect Hatebreed?
