Well there's been alot of talk of InFlames lately in this thread, and funnily enough I saw them last night at what is believed to be the best venue in London. I was at the back for most of it seeing as my friend has a broken arm but fortunately I went down to the pit for 3 good songs which worked out nicely, Only For The Weak, Trigger and Clayman. Devildriver, which is Dez from Coal Chambers new band for anyone who doesnt know were support along with a band called Caliban. And It was a pretty damn good gig. It seems that they may be slightly leaning towards the commercial side with their last two albums, but songs from those two didn't seem at all out of place along with songs from Whoracle, Clayman, JR and the very first album.

Just got back from the Melbourne gig.
Arrived at 7
Gates opened at 7:30
Embodiment played 8-8:30
KSE 9-9:40
Soilwork 10:10-11
Anthrax 11:30-1am
Anthrax played (after Blues Brothers intro + Contact)
What Doesn't die
Got The Time
Caught In A Mosh
Room For One More
Safe Home
AntiSocial
Madhouse
Fueled
NFL
Only
Be All, End All
Deathrider
I Am The Law (Absolute Ownage, best song I think)
Whole Lotta Rosie (AC/DC Cover)
Bring The Noise
Soilwork Played
Figure Number Five
Bastard Chain
As We Speak
The Flamout
Overload
something I can't remember (x2)
Distortion Sleep
Rejection Role
Like The Average Stalker
Follow The Hollow
And I don't really know KSe's catalogue.
Thats roughly the order, may be 1 or two in the other way but I think I've got all the songs. The only bad thing from the gig was that much of the Soilwork/KSE instruments/vox faded into one another and became unrecognisible. (Prolly due to their style of singing) which was ok but not great.
It was fucking loud as it should be.
Anthrax's I Am The Law (a personal fav) was fucking awesome, lets say best song of the night by far.
The Soilwork guitarist (beady: sorry don't know his name) fucking worse a Motley Crue: Theater of Pain T-Shirt while performing, :headbang: and between sets they played Motorhead+Maiden(mostley maiden [notb, can i play with madness, fear of the dark, run to the hills, bring your daughter, the evil that men do, 2 minutes, be quick or be dead, running free])+a bit of motley and something else I failed to recognise due to me being too fucked up from the soilwork set.
And as always I was 3-4 rows from the front in the middle of the mosh for both those bands. Fuck I'm so high and so tired at the same time. Weird. The mosh was fucking brutal, worse than Slayer/MH in 01. Much worse IMO I expcet to wake up with a few bruises tomorrow. Also I got to touch the Soilwork lead singers head when he stage dived, I'm so cool.
I AM SO!!!!
And the KSE lead singer popped out through the soilwork set. And KSE's guitarist Adam is one fucking hilarious and weird dude. He by far had the best talky bits
Twas a fairly good show.

I'm seeing them May 15th, and I'm hoping they play anything other than just STYE, and that excludes reroute (although I find the CD okay, I wanna hear them play earlier stuff)
By the way, I finally got Clayman today. It rules, but I knew it would.

What a fucking show.
Before the gig we went to Anthrax's in-store signing.Got two of my album sleeves signed.John Bush was super-friendly.
Anyway,Embodiment 12:14 were okay.No one really cared about em' at all,though.They gave me a chance to buy an Anthrax tour T-Shirt.Damn good selection of merch actually.
Killswitch Engage were fucking heavy and pretty damn tight as well.Loads of new stuff,including that track from the Freedy vs Jason soundtrack.They closed with "My Last Serenade",which resulted in a massive sing-a-long.Damn good,sharp 40-minute set.
Soilwork played for about 50 minutes.Good selection of material,but nothing from "Steelbath Suicide" again was the only bummer."The Chainheart Machine","Like The Average Stalker" and "The Flameout" were the highlights.Better sound than last year's show,and the crowd were very into it as well.I probably enjoyed their show last year a little more overall,but they were stil damn good anyway.
Anthrax.Tight as fucking hell.Played loads of old stuff,and only two tracks from WCFYA actually.They opened with "Contact"/"What Doesn't Die',which is THE IDEAL opener.One of the best live bands you'll see.Ever."Only","Antisocial","Room For One More" and "Among The Living" (even heavier live anyway!!!!!!) in particular fucking ruled.They closed with "Bring The Noise",which comes off pretty well live actually.Lights,backdrop,etc were all perfect really.
Scott Ian has awesome stage presence,as does John Bush,who even stage-dived from the top of one of the speakers.And you don't realise how good Charlie Benante is until you see him live.If you like heavy music and didn't go to this tour,well,you missed out in a massive way.

Sure, sure, Crabby.
Killswitch Engage stole the show 2 nights in a row. Fucking awesome band.
Soilwork were pretty average but they sucked even more the night after. 'Speed' Strid voice was absolutely horrible.
Anthrax were good both nights, mixed it up a bit too to keep things fresh for both nights. Nice little drum solo at the end of 'Nobody Knows Anything'.
Overall, good show but KsE were the shit.
Embodiment 12:14 don't deserve the mention. Not bad, but not my style.
Crabby
April 28th, 2004, 1:13 AM
Well,I'll agree that Killswitch Engage were great.I'll be picking up "The End Of Heartache" come May 10 for certain.I'm hoping they come back for their own headlining shows sometime on this tour.
I don't think Embodiment 12:14's style of hardcore was really suited to these shows at all anyway.
Did Soilwork play anything different the second night?

My Wurdulak CD came yesterday. :hyper: It's so great. I grabbed it from my mailbox on the way to class. After class I'm holding it and talking to the teacher, so she asked me if she can look at it. So she takes the booklet out and flips through then looks like she's gonna puke, hands it back and is like ":nono:".
So I leave and look at it on the way home to see it was a nun with crosses stabbing into her body, including her vagina. :$
Felt bad. She's a cool teacher and way religious.
But DAMN IT'S AN AWESOME CD. I'm gonna order their second album pretty soon.

Ninnghizhidda - Demigod
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Centinex - Hellbrigade
Nokturnal Mortem - Nechrist
Decapitated - Winds of Creation
Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder
Graveworm - Ingraved in Black
Old Man's Child - Ill-Natured Spiritual Invasion and Revelation 666
Mayhem - Chimera and De Mysteriis
...and when I go to visit my girlfriend, I think I'll pick up a used copy of Dismember - Death Metal for $6. :headbang:

Dream Theater has recorded their show at the Budokan in Tokyo,
Japan on April 26th, 2004, for an upcoming Live DVD/CD release.
The setlist for this show was as follows:

The Test That Stumped Them All
Endless Sacrifice
Instrumedley
Trial Of Tears
~~~intermission~~~
New Millennium
piano solo
Only A Matter Of Time
Goodnight Kiss/
Solitary Shell
I just want to make a remark about the medieval-metal.
You know groups like Hammerfall, Nightwish, Blind Guardian, most of these bands are highly respected and have the greatest musicians not only in metal but in music.
But i just can't get on their music, i have been forced to listen to some Nightwish and other medieval stuff and i find them awful, yup a lot of virtuosism but there was something i just couldn't stand in this music. Its not the theme of his songs (hell im a f'n Tolkien mark), not the abuse of speed on his compositions, not the operistic chorus (I like Lacrimosa), its EVERYTHING, its the most annoying form of metal ever and seriously i just don't understand it.
How can you not like Power Metal?
Seriously?
Is it that you don't like cheese on your pizza? Or in your music?
The main thing about Power metal is that it's really cheesey, really melodic, and very "gay". Personally I love it.
And for the stupidest news item of the year
ANTHRAX'S WHAT DOESN'T DIE CLIP GETS BANNED FROM MTV
What a load of horseshit. And Scott says on the Anthrax.com site.
The new video for "What Doesn't Die" was banned by MTV. Originally accepted by Headbanger's Ball, the decision was overridden by Standards & Practices. The scenes in question were the fake zombie on fire, the fake zombie carrying a fake head, and my fake zombie killing scene where I knock the head off of a fake mummy. This is the funniest thing I've heard all year.
I was asked to come up with some captions for possible edits.
Here they are in case we don't get to use them:
* This scene does not contain casual sex and or public intoxication, therefore it was deemed unsuitable for viewing.
* This scene does not depict an unrealistic lifestyle, nor does it
contain any misogynistic acts, therefore it was deemed unsuitable for viewing.
* This scene does not depict wanton destruction of property and or sophomoric violence, therefore it was deemed unsuitable for viewing.
* This scene does not exploit anyone in any way shape or form, therefore it was deemed unsuitable for viewing.
* This scene is not reality television, therefore it was deemed unsuitable for viewing.
* This scene does not contain a lip-synching half naked faux-orgasmic performance, therefore it was deemed unsuitable for viewing.
* This scene does not promote celebrity worship, therefore it was deemed unsuitable for viewing.
* This scene is not crunk or pimped. It does not contain any bling-bling, bitches, or ho's, excessive or otherwise, therefore it was deemed unsuitable for viewing.
There you have it. Hypocrisy anyone?
This sure does bring back the good 'ole days of Tipper Gore and the
PMRC. Remember them? They were cute compared to what we've got to fight against now.
I finally got around to ordering some CDs. I got:
Children of Bodom - Follow the Reaper
I used to have this a few years ago (I lost it), so I knew how it sounded, and after sampling Hatebreeder at Amazon (good place to listen, bad place to buy), I figured I should just re-buy this one and worry about HB later.
Decapitated - Winds of Creation
Don't know why it took me so long to get this one...the samples were awesome when I listened to it the first time.
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
The only reason I'm getting this is because of Det Som En Gang Var. I was thinking about Filosofem, since it has 2 more songs, but decided not to. Hope the other 3 songs are good too. :happysad:
Old Man's Child - Pagan Prosperity
I chose this since The End doesn't have Mayhem's De Mysteriis OR Chimera. Guess I'll check Red Stream next time. It took me a fucking half hour to decide which Old Man's Child I wanted, since I think they all sounded awesome to me and better than the only one I own (In Defiance of Exsistence is definitely their least best). To me, this CD barely sounds better than Ill-Natured Spiritual Invasion, and both sound pretty damn good.
When I went to see my girlfriend, I picked up that Dismember CD I was talking about before, Death Metal. Pretty much what I expected, but not much more. This isn't a bad CD by any means, but hopefully their other stuff sounds better. Didn't these guys rip off Entombed, anyway? :troll:
Don't be put off by the amount of songs on a Burzum release. Songs are epic in length. 'Filosofem' is good, it all depends if you can handle the 25 minute keyboard track which can be draining.
I wouldn't say they ripped Entombed off, they pretty much created that sound with Entombed. All the fuzzy guitars and shit at Skogsberg's Sunlight Studios.
Brendo, nobody wants to talk metalcore....change of heart...Killswitch ENgage's new album comes out next week. Oh yes. Did I mention before they were hands down the best band on that triple bill a couple of weeks back.
Newcastle's Metal Bloody Metal Fest is on tomorrow. A shitload of bands, like 10-12 bands from 12pm-11pm. But Bloodduster is playing the Cambo tomorrow as well, so the later bands will be playing to their mates.
I am also very,very much looking forward to the new Killswitch Engage album.I agree that they were awesome live,but weren't the best band on the bill.But then again you're not familiar with Anthrax's back catalogue,so it's understandable really.
Blood Duster's music these days is still decent,but there old stuff was better.They almost try a little too hard to be controversial and piss people off really (though they're a funny bunch of bastards).They need to cut back on the piss-taking a little and try and make some better music again anyway.
Not too bad. I have their Dechristianize CD. The title track is excellent, and the rest of the CD is fairly good. The drummer is fast as hell with the blast beats (or is it really a blast beat? Since he's rolling the bass drum and hitting the snare, instead of alternating bass and snare really fast. Oh well...), probably just as fast as the drummer for Krisiun.
I know a HEAP of people who thought KsE were the standout band. I don't think Anthrax's back catalogue is much to write home about to be honest, the songs don't stand out..very non-descript.
Yeah thats the weird thing. Down here I'd basically KSE were clearly the 3rd rank band.
Anthrax clearly owned the night, then Soilwork then KSE.
And how you can't like the set Anthrax played I'll never know, then again you don't know the back catalogue inside out like I do. I guess I'm the Only one, but when they played down here the crowded was fueled on Anthrax playing and on the pit there's always room for one more.
Weird. KsE got the most crowd reaction and most pit action both nights in my opinion. I know the Anthrax catalogue well enough to pick up all your song references in your last sentence, Mr. David Hasselhoff.
MTV has officially lifted the ban on the zombie infested promo clip for the song "What Doesn't Die" off of Anthrax's latest record, We've Come For You All.
Initially banned by the network for violent content, the decision was
overturned for undisclosed reasons. When reached for comment Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian said, "This video needs to be seen. People need to know that this zombie menace, left unchecked, will be the death of us all!"
"The decision to air this terribly stereotypical and racist anti-zombie
propaganda is deeply upsetting" said Arthur Breakstone, chairman of PETZ (People for the Ethical Treatment of Zombies). "In this day and age for the living impaired to be portrayed as shuffling shambling flesh eating monsters is an outrage. We plan on boycotting MTV and all it's affiliated products and I urge all of you to let your voices be heard! PETZ will prevail in this matter and all others that slander such beautiful creatures.
It's nothing like that.
All different bands get a forum at UltimateMetal and there's a fuckload of Official forums there (Opeth, Anthrax, Nevermore, CoB, Arch Enemy, etc [about 100]) and there's also a bunch of other forums Off Topic, Scenes (Oz, US, Asia, etc), and some special boards for big bands (Megadeth, Testament, IF) if they dont have a board there.
Each board is different since it basically has different people in it and such. Though the Off-Topic forum used to be Opeth's Off Topic and is full of a fair few wankers the one I post on are fairly good MaidenDownunder mostly, and perhaps a little Anthrax, but I view a few if I have the time.
Also many times one board will invade another. A year or so back Dark Tranquilities board was ravaged by another board which i can't remember and go to the point where they locked down the forums to the point where only certain people who generally posted there could view and post at the board.
Also i find the Nevermore board completely insane which is good if you want a random dose of insanity (which everyone does).
It's a huge site, go and see how big it is when it comes back http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forums/
I'll have to check the place out. So far I've struck out with almost every place I've been to besides this one, but that place sounds so big that there's bound to be a good handful of places to post, at least.
Just ordered some new CDs from Columbia House:
Anthrax - Attack of the Killer A's and Sound of White Noise (I either lost it or someone stole it, but my friends listen to crappy music, so I'm betting on the former)
The Crown - Possessed 13
Type O Negative - Life is Killing Me
Entombed - Clandestine
..and the other two I can't remember. Must've been a few spur-of-the-moment decisions.
...and they also had a CD of a Mexican guy with a cowboy hat in the metal section. :wtf: Rogelio Martínez. No, I didn't buy that.
Responses to your points in order:
- You stay away from that album, y'here? If you value your money.
- Ill Nino = nu-metal = dead
- I heard for the most part it's pretty good, but gets repetitive after a few listens.
- Drowning Pool will no longer hold any relevance in metal, not that they ever did.
- Entombed's albums are being remastered? I need to get the first 2 albums. Stat.
I only have Collection on CD and Earth AD on casette. The music stores around here don't really sell many Misfits albums. All I can really find around here are the "Greatest Of" collections, and personally I'd rather own all the albums than just a select few songs from a bunch of different ones.
Um, they're not that bad, but if you're expecting original Misfits-level stuff, then you'll be very disappointed. American Psycho isn't a horrible CD by any means.
I'm liking Decapitated's CD the more and more I listen to it. As far as crazy death metal goes, I like this better than Vital Remains' Dechristianize and Zyklon's World Ov Worms CDs, easily. DevilDriver sound so incredibly derivative it's nauseating- think Coal Chamber vocals with heavier guitars and blast-beats.It just shows that Dez Fafafra is a bandwgaon-jumper- he milked nu metal while it was cool, now that that gere is dead he's moved on to the next cool trend that's happening.I scored their album for free but I've only listened to it a few times it's so uninspiring.
Weeeeell, Over the weekend here in England we have had the Download Festival in Donington. Some stuff worth mentioning.
>Soulfly were brilliant, they even played 'roots bloody roots'. I swear Max kept disappearing.
>There was a mix up with times and transport problems with the bands, so Damage Plan came to the Main Stage for a surprise set. Pretty average, however, at the end Dimebag Darrel said that he'd never turn his back on the Pantera fans, and they played Walk which was incredible.
>Machine Head were immense.
>As were Hatebreed in the Second Stage tent.
>After many rearrangements because of transport problems apparently, Slayer finally came onto the second stage (they were meant to be playing the main stage.) Kerry must have changed his guitar for every song, but Ive got to hand it to Tom, who was on top form, despite his voice when he spoke being totally fucked up. They had played the Dynamo festival in Denmark I think, the night before.
Oh yeh, they were fucking brilliant. Angel Of Death, War Ensemble, Raining Blood, Dead Skin Mask all played.
>Slipknot were top draw. This new stuff is much better than the shite from Iowa.
But the main thing..
Metallica come on an hour and a half late, only three of them. And James says 'when we arrived there were four of us, all fine. But Lars has just been rushed to hospital due to a medical condition, but we hope its nothing serious.'
So then he says that they were going to be joined by a selection of drummers throughout the night. So first they were joined by Dave Lombardo, he played with them for a few songs. Then Joey Jordison played with them for a few, then Lars' drum tech, Flemming, drummed for one song, and at the end Joey came back for the last few. Quite interesting seeing Joey in his mask next to Metalica.
Also, James seems to have recognised all the criticism. He mentioned Kill `Em All alot and seemed to indicate it was his favorite.
So yeah, it was all brilliant. But if I had to name highlights..
Slayer
Machine Head
Soulfly
Shutup. Slipknot may be a commercial band, with a large number of 10 year old fans who know fuck all about music, but Joey Jordison is a proper musician and a very good drummer. Taylors a good singer etc. as well, but let's talk about Jordison.. If you can give me five reasons why Joey Jordison is a bad musician and why Slipknot should be grouped into the same category with Linkin Park, and worser still, Limp Bizkit, then I might shutup. It is true Slipknot make commercial, easy to access music, which therefore appeals greatly to young teenagers who naturally want to be into rock music due to its rebellious side, but why does that make them mickey mouse musicians? Their music is NOT as pop orientated as Linkin Park, Good Charlotte and Limp Bizkit, who blatently are manufactured for the benefit of making money and only there simply so that Rock has a place in the mainstream.
And plus, If you named every band you like, or if the people in here named some respectable bands.. I think you would find that most of them have many songs with catchy couruses and tunes that will stay in your head because they are accessible... 'War Ensemble'..... 'Mechanix'... 'King Of Fools'..... 'Davidian'.... if I just quickly look through my song library..
so shhhhh...
as well, but let's talk about Jordison.. If you can give me five reasons why Joey Jordison is a bad musician and why Slipknot should be grouped into the same category with Linkin Park, and worser still, Limp Bizkit, then I might shutup.
Joey Jordison is not neccessarily a bad musician....but playing fast does not make one a good musician...a drummer who plays fast AND is good is Flo Mounier or Derek Roddy.
1)Because they water down an unoriginal formula to make their music.
2)They are a gimmick. Half their personnel are not required (A DJ, sampler and 2 idiots who beat each other up and their rubbish bins?)...the masks and the overalls...
3)They proclaim with each new album like LP & LB do, that their respective new albums with break new ground and be fresh and exciting. The usual calls of 'more dynamic, more melodic and more heavy'.
4)They all have idiotic biased fans who like them for no concievable reason, they either move on to better things (see: The Artist formerly known as Sideburnz) or they keep thinking X band is the best thing since sliced bread despite breaking absolutely no creative barriers.
5)Their creative stagance will result in waning popularity over time (see: Korn) and will be but a memory much like other bands of their ilk who exploded with that whole nu-metal explosion of the late 90's and early noughties.
Now.....silence.
It is true Slipknot make commercial, easy to access music, which therefore appeals greatly to young teenagers who naturally want to be into rock music due to its rebellious side, but why does that make them mickey mouse musicians?
I don't even think Burnz I mean Kelly yada yada etc's point was that they sucked as musicians. He was just shitstirring and you took the bait and he got a good bite outta ya.
Yeah Download was amazing!
Band of the festival was easily Slayer!!!!!!!!!!!!
The anticipation level with so many delays and them being on the 2nd stage just made it all the more better.
Saw Metallica for a 3rd time and as per ususal they were great.
Other mentions should go out to Machine Head who are defiently one of the best bands i've ever seen.
Sum 41 who i thought were terrible live ahve improved imensley, and are defiently the funniest and band i've ever seen!
Even though i don't like Linkin Park, i must give them some credit becasue they were a really good live band,
And seeing Dimebag and Walk!!!!!! Fuck, that was the pit of the weekend!!!!
Nah.. there are better drummers... but Micheal Romeo is a very good guitarist, there are many better though.
'The vocals are easily the weakest link! His vocals are crap even by his standards.'
Why? When he sings, I think he has a good voice. I would rate loooooaaaads of singers above him, but his voice is recognisable and I like it.
'1)Because they water down an unoriginal formula to make their music.'
What? Satanism, Death and Rebellion?
There are lots of well respected artists who write songs and make music about these subjects... OK, maybe the idea of 'Fuck The World' and suicide is boring nowadays, but when Slipknot started I don't think many people were annoyed by it. Probably because they wanted a new spokesperson like Cobain.... but anyway..
'2)They are a gimmick. Half their personnel are not required (A DJ, sampler and 2 idiots who beat each other up and their rubbish bins?)...the masks and the overalls...'
Pretty much every Progressive Metal band has a gimmick, bands like Slayer do, In fact so do Death and Black Metal bands... the make-up, leather, weapons etc.
3)They proclaim with each new album like LP & LB do, that their respective new albums with break new ground and be fresh and exciting. The usual calls of 'more dynamic, more melodic and more heavy'.
Ok.. but Lars Ulrich has always been a cocky twat.. Kerry King is, as is Dez Fafara, and lots of artists.
4)They all have idiotic biased fans who like them for no concievable reason, they either move on to better things (see: The Artist formerly known as Sideburnz) or they keep thinking X band is the best thing since sliced bread despite breaking absolutely no creative barriers.
Yeah.. I don't think Slipknot are the best thing since sliced bread, I think they're OK, pretty decent. But I much prefer more complex, clever music.
But what the original point was, wasnt that Slipknot are good, but it was that Joey Jordison is a good and respectable drummer.
5)Their creative stagance will result in waning popularity over time (see: Korn) and will be but a memory much like other bands of their ilk who exploded with that whole nu-metal explosion of the late 90's and early noughties.
Shutup. Slipknot may be a commercial band, with a large number of 10 year old fans who know fuck all about music, but Joey Jordison is a proper musician and a very good drummer. Taylors a good singer etc. as well, but let's talk about Jordison.. If you can give me five reasons why Joey Jordison is a bad musician and why Slipknot should be grouped into the same category with Linkin Park, and worser still, Limp Bizkit, then I might shutup. It is true Slipknot make commercial, easy to access music, which therefore appeals greatly to young teenagers who naturally want to be into rock music due to its rebellious side, but why does that make them mickey mouse musicians? Their music is NOT as pop orientated as Linkin Park, Good Charlotte and Limp Bizkit, who blatently are manufactured for the benefit of making money and only there simply so that Rock has a place in the mainstream.
And plus, If you named every band you like, or if the people in here named some respectable bands.. I think you would find that most of them have many songs with catchy couruses and tunes that will stay in your head because they are accessible... 'War Ensemble'..... 'Mechanix'... 'King Of Fools'..... 'Davidian'.... if I just quickly look through my song library..
so shhhhh...
Haha. You're so childish. "Shut up!" "Shh!". No wonder you like Slipknot, you must be 12.
:rolleyes: Anyways, I'll reply more maturely.
Uhh...yeah you said a whole bunch of shit, but in the end, my opinion is that they suck, Joey sucks, Metallica sucks and no amount of "facts" you throw out at me will change that. I didn't make the joke because they're mainstream. I made it because they suck. My joke stands.
So now you shush, bitch.
I can't stop listening to the new KSE album....
It's a seriously addictive album,I've had it on high rotation for weeks and I'm yet to lose interest.
Well anyway.. I've just bought my tickets for Slayer and SLIPKNOT co-headlining actually so meh.
And also, how good are Fear Factory live? Crabby I think you've seen them.. They're on next week, but I might be missing something so I dunno how worth it they are..
Download sounds damn cool.Slayer are godly live.I want to see Machine Head play a headlining show some day,though-a 40-minute set with Slayer wasn't enough.And while I'm not a fan of Metallica's last few albums they can still cut it live I must say.
And Fear Factory are good live,seen em' a few times.I think they're still finding their feet as a live band again and can improve,but they tend to play loads of their best material live these days (stuff like "Martyr","Self Bias Resistor","Edgecrusher",etc),so that's pretty cool.I don't think Archetype is great but there's a few tracks on there I'd love to hear live,such as "Slave Labor".
My opinion on Slipknot? They are contrived shite but each to their own.
Why? When he sings, I think he has a good voice. I would rate loooooaaaads of singers above him, but his voice is recognisable and I like it.
Each to their own. But my point is on the past 2 albums released on Roadrunner and even the indie one features more spirited vocals.
1)Because they water down an unoriginal formula to make their music.'
There are lots of well respected artists who write songs and make music about these subjects... OK, maybe the idea of 'Fuck The World' and suicide is boring nowadays, but when Slipknot started I don't think many people were annoyed by it. Probably because they wanted a new spokesperson like Cobain.... but anyway..
Ummm when was Slipknot related to satanism? They watered down a formula of death metal to the lowest common denominator, a base version of it all and threw a few elements which was all the craze for the time of the nu-metal explosion like a DJ and a scratcher. Completely unneccesaary, they could get what those 2 guys do with samples or something on keys. Yes, the whole 'fuck society, fuck the system' lyrical perspective is boring and was so before Slipknot hit the scene.
Pretty much every Progressive Metal band has a gimmick, bands like Slayer do, In fact so do Death and Black Metal bands... the make-up, leather, weapons etc.
Who is talking about progressive death metal? SURELY Slipknot aren't to be lumped in these types of bands. Slayer don't have a gimmick. They get up there and rock out. Sure Kerry might have spiked armbands every now and then but it is not the focal point band. Slipknot use their whole visual appearance to get the kiddy scenesters on their wagon, as their isn't alot of depth to what they create.
3)They proclaim with each new album like LP & LB do, that their respective new albums with break new ground and be fresh and exciting. The usual calls of 'more dynamic, more melodic and more heavy'.[/b]
Ok.. but Lars Ulrich has always been a cocky twat.. Kerry King is, as is Dez Fafara, and lots of artists.
Lars, Kerry and Dez have nothing to do with it. They say these things to generate the interest and keep those onboard still sailing with them. I just don't like it when these things are said and there is no evidence to solidify the call.
I don't even think Burnz I mean Kelly yada yada etc's point was that they sucked as musicians. He was just shitstirring and you took the bait and he got a good bite outta ya.
Well No, he was laughing at the guy who kind of brought in on himself by saying 'Joey Jordison and Metallica? that sounds totally awesome dude'.
If that album is uninspired than I'm not here.They've taken everything that was great about AOJB and imroved on it really.The heavy parts are killer and the melodies are well-written and catchy,but in a damn good way,though.I'm really,really hoping that they come back for some headlining shows sometime soon.
And they're not metal,but has anyone else here picked up Velvet Revolver's "Contraband"? It's nothing earth-shattering but it's a cool hard rock album anyway.Some pretty catchy melodies.
System Of A Down Progress New Album
System of a Down have been recording their new album in North Hollywood since January and the record is taking shape.
Of the new songs, Serj Tankian says, "There's a good amount of social commentary in our new songs, as is typical with our writing in terms of lyrics. There are also songs where we deal with love, with reminiscing, relationships, politics, and funny experiences. But the thing that I find about the songs is that they're less specific, they are more open to interpretation, which we like a lot more."
"We've all been stretching and growing as musicians," said Daron Malakian in a statement. "The musicianship on the new songs is more complex, more intricate and technical. We're all so excited about being in this band and about getting into the studio to start recording the new album. There are a lot of things we want to try once we're in the studio, we'll be doing a lot of experimenting with these new songs."
At this stage, there is no title for the album or a release date although fans can expect to have it before Christmas.
This is a few days old,but eh-
The Haunted sign with Century Media.
"Swedish thrash metal titans THE HAUNTED have signed a worldwide multiple-album deal with Century Media Records. The band has already completed work on their highly anticipated, yet still untitled, fourth album which will be released this fall. It will undoubtedly prove once again why Kerrang! labeled the band as "the single greatest exponents of balls-out metal in the world."
Commented by guitarist Anders Björler, "We are happy to have chosen CM for the next couple of albums. CM is a legendary metal label, and we feel strongly they'll support us in the best way possible."
Phil Hinkle, director of A&R for Century Media America, added, "It's an honor to be working with THE HAUNTED, and they make our already outstanding roster that much more stellar." Leif Jensen, A&R manager for Century Media Europe, comments "Personally and professionally, we look forward to lead this great band to full worldwide success. Their time is now!"
Recorded at Gothenburg's famed Studio Fredman (In Flames, Dimmu Borgir, Arch Enemy) with co-producers Patrik J. Steen & Fredrik Nordström and mixed at Denmark's Antfarm Studio by Tue Madsen, the album features such cuts as "All Against All," "99," "Who Will Decide" (featuring a guest appearance by Sick Of It All vocalist Lou Koller) and "Burnt To A Shell." THE HAUNTED also have a new addition to the fold, as original vocalist Peter Dolving, who crushed on the group's genre-defining self-titled debut release, returns with a vengeance.
Regarding Dolving's return and the new album, Anders Björler said, "It's nice to have Dolving back in the band. He's energitic, hardworking and had 1000's of fresh musical ideas upon his return. We look forward to what the future will hold for us as a band. After having recorded this new album I feel confident it will work out extremely well. Be on the look out for something really powerful this fall."
Right on the money there. The End of Heartache takes everything that was great from Alive or Just Breathing and kicks it up a few notches. It just, all around, is a much more solid and breathtaking effort, if that is even possible.
Howard Jones' vocals are much more blistering and soothing (at different times throughout the album) than the previous lead singer (whose name escapes me ATM). The heavy parts are heavier, the melodic parts are catchier, and overall it's simply two or three notches above the previous two albums they've put out.
And from what I've heard and read, I'm dying to get ahold of some of Jones' other band's (Blood Has Been Shed) stuff.
I checked out Avenged Sevenfold with The Bronx and lostprophets earlier in the year and i thought they were ok. A few points to make:
1) The lead singer looks like Hitler's love-child bred on steroids. His arms are massive.
2) The drumming was excellent.
3) Great singing and harmonies between the band.
4) A lot of the songs were catchy but nothing ground-breaking in my opinion. It was like Metal 101. Generic.
5) Decent guitar work and a tight band.
6) Point 4 doesn't mean i hated them, they were okay just not anything special as far as i'm concerned.
I've nothing against them its just i tend to try and listen to stuff that is a bit different to the stuff around at the time. Theres nothing worse than a saturation of bands with the same sound. Anyway my best mate is a real big fan of them so i'm sure i'll check them out again at Leeds Festival in August.
'Novella of Uriel' is it's name. I've seen it nowhere except the majestic overpriced haven that is Utopia. I'd like to get their debut EP/demo...I downloaded a song off it called 'Willful Ignorance', a great chugging heavy as song.
And I take it nobody has checked out Norther yet?
I heard they sound like CoB...and I'm quite over CoB. I'm not a huge fan of the bands that are signed to the Spinefarm/Spikefarm label, they tend to be horribly generic and mediocre or they all sound the same.
Everyone seems to rip Hypocrisy's Arrival album but I quite like it. Is that so wrong?
They're on Nuclear Blast right? Seems to me that lately, they are one of the worst labels to release mediocre rubbish all the time. I use to be a fan, too much power metal (sorry Dave).
Mick,get back to work.
I've had a listen to a few tracks from the upcoming Ministry album and it sounds pretty promising and a real return to form.It'll be interesting to see how Al fares over the course of an album without his creative right hand man Paul Barker,though.
Yeah, but...come on. It's Hypocrisy for God's sake.
Haven't heard Arrival, but want it desperately.
Isn't that a Blood Has Been Shed album? 'Cause I'm pretty certain KSE's debut is self-titled.
And The Butterfly Effect have signed a deal with Sony for distribution in Europe so you should be able to get your hands on their album pretty soon.
I've finally got my own radio show, which is on a well-known station and the signal is obtainable to anyone within Winnipeg. I've doing mostly power metal with a few random things thrown in.
