I have all their albums. We Kill Everyone isn't that great, though.

Sick of You is one of the best GWAR songs ever made.

There are rumours again that Helmet will re-unite,with John Tempesta on drums.Hmmmm interesting.

Speaking of Helmet,Soulfly have covered "In The Meantime" for their new album.I'm voting that it will suck anyway.

Was looking around the network here and found a few Nightwish albums. Now firstly this struck me as odd since we have a few half pop-metal kids who like Evenscence and Manson and stuff like that and think they're tr00 yet they've never heard bands like Anthrax or anything which isn't on the edge of mainstream.

I laughed when I saw this message in the same folder:

This Music is probably nothing like you have ever heard before.
I did not download these albums for myself.
But the music is kind of interesting after a while ;)

Oh come on, what a load of bullshit. NightWish aren't remotely strange like Pain Of Salvation but are pretty much Power metal with a chick singing. Even if a guy sings on some of it.

I now see I have to try with this batch of first years as they have no idea what anything is.

But it was good timing snice I was considering downloading some NightWish.

Haha Dave, trying to win over the trendy masses again with the real thing.Sometimes it just isn't possible, like the Slipknot kiddy (ie.first year student) last week who laughed at Opeth T-Shirt for some weird reason.

I'm buying a mate's copy of Porcupine Tree's "In Absentia",as he's upgrading to the remastered version.I really need to get more of their stuff.

And Pain Of Salvation sure does take some time to get used to,Dave.

That's pretty gay. But does the Journey album have 'Oh Sherry' on it? That song is cool.

Who in the shit are slipknot?
Whether this was a question to demonstrate your undergroundedness or your disdain for modern metal in general remains to be seen. Nobody wants to talk about Slipknot, except Kane-a-nite or someone like that who likes sonic faeces and other contemporary tripe.

Nope. "Oh Sherry" is a solo Steve Perry song he wrote about his g/f or wife or whatever at the time.

This is all fine and dandy, but when are we going to get back to talking about Metal?

I mean, I know columbia house and places like that list Poison in their metal section, but that doesn't exactly make it so, now does it. And by poison, I mean journey and all the other light-rock that you've all been discussing. And poison.

Let's talk about................... Volcano.

So Mike and I went to a used CD store last weekend. It's one that we go to once every week or two. Anyway, so we get there and this guy in the parking lot says "Are you here for Yngwie Malmsteen?" And we're like..."uh, no." So we're thinking :wtf: and we walk inside and Yngwie was there just browsing through the store. Apparently he had just done an autograph session. And you could SO tell the store was full of his fans, because they were all like 40 with black clothes and long black hair. They looked just like him. It was all kind of weird. We looked at CDs and left.

Crabby, whats your source?!

Here's a question for you fellas,

List the albums you're ashamed of owning and explain the state of mind which inspired the purchase.

As I Lay Dying - Frail Words Collapse
Not really bad, more so completely drab, uninspired and generic. Awesome case on jumpin on the bandwagon of Swedish nu-metal riffing with screamed verse and sung chorus. Boring.

Brujeria - Raza Odiada
It's funny for about 5 minutes when you realise it just sounds like shit.

Coal Chamber - Coal Chamber
I got it cos it was one of the better mail order items on some shit list I got roped into. Hell it was a cheap scheme.

Damageplan - New Found Power
Gimme a decent soundcard so I can plug the axe into my pc and chuck a drum machine in and I'll right you some inspired songs not treading water. Boring.

Marilyn Manson - Smells Like Children
It was a gift. It's the thought that counts. I wonder what the person was thinking buying this though.

Pain - Nothing Remains The Same
Rammsteiny, Rob Zombie-ey crap. Industrial nu metal garbage.

Sun O))) - White1
Feedback. I bought a CD full of feedback.

Where could I find that? I found mine in NH I think. Some trendy little record store... you know, those ones not in malls but that are their own chains? In fact, I got the Marduk boxset at one of those places as well. I tried finding the Marduk set online(no luck WhatSoEver!) but stumbled upon it in the store. Never tried looking for the Necrophagia set online because I didn't really know about it until I first held it. Both of these boxes I got are slightly damaged(dent), but are still very fucking cool. Anyways, I don't think I could help you much except to say Check the box set areas.

Legacy of Horror, Gore & Sickness has no side labels. So it may be there and you won't know it, unless you're a sucker for that coffin shape. I know I am. That's the reason I picked the thing up in the first place, "Hey, that's a coffin box... oh, holy shit what the fuck is this? Alright." ;) It comes with the digipak cd(great art), METAL logo pin!, bumper sticker, "postcard", poster, death certificate(signed and numbered by killjoy[***/1000] with a spot for your name above his ["The undersigned has learned and crafted the arts of grave robbing, cannibalism, necrophilia, torture, pathology, embalming and the black arts"] - I wouldn't have used the arts twice, but oh well.) The box is thinnish cardboard and can ruin quite easily.

Anyways :o, you can buy the Record(Double Vinyl LP) right Here. (http://www.blackmetal.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?category=search&item=VC006DLP&type=store) Assuming you've got a record player.

Morte is fucking AWESOME. I got a shit version though, skips and jults a lot. I need to get a new one, but holy shit. Great album.

Yeah, reviews of Divine Art said it was pretty shitty. Heres one:

Utterly ordinary grindcore with splatter-film lyrics, Necrophagia's The Divine Art of Torture tries hard to shock and horrify, but falls short on both fronts. The band's umpteenth release in the two decades since its 1983 debut, Season of the Dead, The Divine Art of Torture adds Mirai Kawashima (keyboardist and primary songwriter with the Japanese art-death trio Sigh) to the lineup, but unfortunately, the ten tracks don't have the experimental bent and wit of Kawashima's primary gig. Instead, it's just more of the same: lyrics that blend Edgar Allan Poe and Herschell Gordon Lewis, monotonic riff-heavy songs that never quite break out the way they continually threaten to, and leader Killjoy's grunty delivery. Even for fans of the band's previous work, it's hard to shake the feeling that even at its best, The Divine Art of Torture doesn't live up to its title. — Stewart Mason

I couldn't disagree more. :dunno: Thats why reviews are meaningless.

Panzer Division is definitely worth picking up, I'd say. La Grande Danse, you MUST get. Out of all the Marduk I have (which isn't much..:$), it's the most impressive. It's the kind of black metal album where the songs don't all mesh together...like it has standout riffs and shit. The whole thing owns. I lurve LURVE the last track "Jesus Christ...Sodmozied".

And onto new discussion, whoever it was that reccomended Darkthrones A Blaze In The Northern Sky...thankyou. I love it. I just got Transilvanian Hunger, it's great too. :hyper: Really digging Dakrthrone lately.

And what else...

OH YEAH! I finally got Gorelords second album. Zombie Suicide: Part 666. More awesome stuff. I'm not sure what I dig more, first of second album...but doesn't matter. I HAVE BOTH. Bwahaha.

I got Hypocrisys Arrival. I haven't listened to it yet though. So like...discuss them, cuz I've never heard them before.

Hypocrisy aren't all that bad. Their earlier stuff is much better than their newer stuff. My uncle freakin' hails to them like they're the best thing out there, and while Tagtgren's pretty much a genius (in that he's the main creative mind behind Hypocrisy, as well as being a pretty big producer in Sweden and having his own thing called Pain which features him on every instrument as well as vocals and all that mess), they're not bad at all...there are just better bands out there.

From what I've heard of the new album, I do want it...as it's basically a sequel to Abducted which is a really killer album for being all melodic-y. But their last few albums have just been meh, IMO...as I'd rather listen to old In Flames or Dark Tranquillity or even some old Edge of Sanity if I want Swedish Metal.

But they're not really bad...just another Swedish band, really.

What Mayhem do you have? I'd stick with 'De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas' and 'Live In Leipzig', to start with. Fuck. If only Dead had waited until after laying down some vocals on 'DMDS' and THEN killed himself I would've been very happy. Cos Attila Csihar's vocals can get quite annoying. Although they're cool on the Mediolanum Capta Est live album doing a guest spot on 'From The Dark Past'. I think 'Grand Declaration of War' is a good album, but not great. They've wrote far better songs in the past. Shall be interesting to hear 'Chimera' which comes out soon.

Satyricon are the shit. Ja. I'd say I enjoy 'Rebel...' the most. I'm not a fan of silly little EP's and split EP's they use to release. It's LP's or nothing. They take old school black to new levels of songwriting and production values. For the genre lover among you I'd call them progressive black rock. Or something.

For lovers of Frost's crisp and speedy drumming, get your hands on 1349's 'Liberation'. It smokes PJ Extra Milds or Winny Blues, depending on your preference.

Also going to Fear Factory in June (If anyone has seen them, how are they live?) and Inflames (Same goes for them, however I can't see them being poor at all.)

Aaaaaaaaandd.... theres a 'New Wave Of American Heavy Metal' (as theyre calling it) Tour coming.. KSE, Chimaira, Shadows Fall and God Forbid... Would anyone here think that's worth going to??

It's tomorrow.

Now I don't have 'Dark Medieval Times', I've got the LP's from 'The Shadowthrone' onwards. If you have the dvd 'Roadkill Extravaganza', Sigurd even attests himself they pushed the whole folk/medieval flavoured thing to it's limit and rather to cover old push they've pushed on. I like the old shit, it's great. The riffs are majestic and they soar. Think 'Mother North'. Onto the new stuff, the direction first illustrated on the 'Megiddo' & 'Intermezzo II' EP's. I mean, look at Sigurd on the cover of 'Intermezzo II', there's a change of image for starters. The riffs are very C.Frosty. From 'Rebel...' on it's a bit of a regression and a progression at the same time. Songwriting techniques display climatic tendencies, none of that verse chorus verse stuff. The songs build towards certain points and sometimes plateau and build again. Hence progressive songwriting. One major thing missing from 'Rebel...' on is heavy use of keys, those traditional harpsichord sounds have been replaced for more atmospheric tones of synth. The latter day guitar tones remind me of (the mighty) Darkthrone.

All in all, dude, it's regression (or even minimalism in a sense) with progression. Well that's the way I hear it, everyone interprets things differently.

Your turn. Like, elaborate on why the albums are so bad they're good etc etc. And why liking 'Volcano' and 'Rebel...' worries you. Give it your best.

Lots of love.

-Mike

Got a copy of the new In Flames video (The Quiet Place) and while it's nothing revolutionary in the metal world, it could break mainstream. Well thats my opinion anyway, considering the use of CGI is similiar to the Linkin Park type stuff and anders voice is lighter like in Passenger, probably because of his poor technique which has finally worn him down. The vocals aren't very high in the mix and the vid is very well produced.

And my roommate says he doesn't mind it after one viewing and he virtually only likes anything which is in mainstream rock.

Also Edguy's next video will be Lavatory Love Machine (awesome track). And I now sit Hellfuire Club equal with Mandrake with about a 9.5 from 10. And somewhere in my top 5. But thats only having it for about 5 days.

I've forcefed my roommate King of Fools to the point where he knows the words. :headbang:. I'll get him liking the entire album since I've played it no-stop since I picked it up.

From what I heard of the new In Flames was horrible. It was the same repetitive song structure I heard on RtR, I don't know what song it was but the verse was driven by cheesy electronics and Anders was crooning in his whispery whine thing he's been developing the last few records (KoRn?). To do more damage it sounded like they put a 'telephone' effect over his voice. Pushing the envelope of creativity and originality

Melodic death will never be mainstream. So why try and water the sound down, they're only losing and alienating their fans in the process.

I can only infer this is more of a continuation of the RtR formula. I'm all for progression but when you start to alienate fans and move away from what got you in the upper echelons in the first place, that worries me. It's the symptoms of a band trying break through to the mainstream.

Where I live for Uni, it's only a 30min tram ride to Flinders Street Station (from my front door) or if I'm at Uni a 10 minute Train ride, so usually I'll go to Metal Mayhem, and perhaps walk to Bourke/Elizabeth to see Jb Hi-Fi, or I'll go to various other ones depending on where I am for the day. JB usually have a half decent selection.

That's a pretty sweet deal.

We have the Rock Shop up here. While it has some half decent stuff the staff are retarded and the organisation is abysmal.

And JB which is pretty decent.

Nothing much else except a place called the Beaumont Street Beat 20 minutes away from here which has a massive 2nd hand collection and plenty of metal.

I have a place in my town called the House of Sight and Sound that I used to visit a lot. But I realized that they don't stock much black metal (due to lack of demand...they had to send their Immortal CDs back, among other things), and it's a lot cheaper to order from The End, anyway.

Sounds very JB Hi-Fi-ey to me. They have about 15 metres worth of metal. With all the bigger bands sorted and assorted the rest. I just plough through them.

You can count on them having 20 + copies of the big new releases and the big underground extreme acts like Mayhem and Deicide.

Speaking of Mayhem, 'Chimera' is fucking good.

Speaking of In Flames, I missed the last page on the discussion where they're compared with the new metallica.
Although I agree that their old stuff is far far far more superior than their new stuff, I still love them, and will continue them.

Also, you all hear that S.T.Y.E. is #2 in sweden? It made top 200 billboard charts in US too, which is both good and bad. I've heard about half of it...and I'm indifferent. It reminds me a lot of reroute.

Seen 'em. They were alright the first time around. They were pretty decent the second time around too. But they were totally upstaged by Killswitch Engage the second time I saw them (and they were supposed to be the headliners). The new FF is pretty typical and somewhat of a re-hash of "Demanufacture",but still a decent effort and far better than "Digimortal".

Since your poor, get a job. Become a Relapse Records whore. Go to their website and download a whole heap of their mp3's. If you dig Arch Enemy and In Flames, you'll pretty much dig anything out of the Swedish metal schene from Hypocrisy to Dark Tranquillity (I command thee to purchase The Mind's I).

You dig Chimaira, then check out Lamb of God. Do it now. I demand you.

Give some stuff from the 80's thrahs era a shot. Old Metallica, Megadeth, Exodus, Anthrax...even get some Pantera. And I'd recommend Exhorder as well...

There are a few newer bands out there with similar sounds to KsE...more and more popping up all the time...so, go figure there.

And for the love of god, buy some early Life of Agony. EVERYONE should own a copy (no matter which format be it vinyl, casette, CD, mp3) of River Runs Red.

But not liking Megadeth is a freakin' crime. Ask Dave, he'll tell you.

Yes, KsE is short for Killswitch Engage. And of course you like them. They're awesome. But there are a whole slew of bands ripping off their sound and putting out albums. They're the new flavor of the month.

Not liking LOA or Danzig...:nono: Again, a crime. I don't give you permission to listen to Opeth until you listen to How the Gods Kill :D.

Anywho, the secret to truly "getting into metal" is listening to it all with an open mind. I used to consider myself into metal, when I really wasn't because I really didn't give it all a listen. Now that I have opened my mind to pretty much everything out there, I really dig a lot of what's available to me. Now, I'm not merely "into" metal...I appreciate it. It's a crime. (happy now Wizz?)

Anthrax's WCFYA is absolute awesomeness, kicked the shit out of St Anger last year, and I think I reviewed it in that review thread thingy. SOWN sold 3 million copies so well, you can't really say thats a bad record for a metal record to sell that much. Stomp442 is average. Volume8 I love. And their earlier Joey stuff, which is completely different Among The Living is 4.5/5 for thrash, but will probably be disliked since it's not AS relevant (although it's still awesome). And Persistance is greatness.

As for Megadeth. Lets see they must have at least one record you would like.

Cryptic Writings is seen as almost a perfect template for Pop music and metal. (Trust hit #1) And first time I listened to it I was just amazed at how good it sounded and how well written it was. Rust In Peace is a fucking Opus, my #1 album of all time. Countdown was their other hit in their catalogue which also hit #1 (record not single) and Ashes... is godly. Youthanasia is pretty good, Peace Sells is an awesome thrash record (similiar to Anthrax's Among), and I find it hard anyone who's really listened to SFSGSW can't like it's heavyness.

Megadeth > Metallica.

And I get to see Killswitch Engage on Sunday with Anthrax and Soilwork :headbang:

I've only heard one song by each band (thanks to Comcast Digital Cable and the Metal Channel that they have), and I dig both tracks...which hopefully means that I'll dig both albums. But...

The one song that they played off of Iced Earth's new album ("Greenface") I thought was kinda annoying the first time I heard it. Now, it's completely grown on me & is probably one of my fave tracks on it.

So, I'm assuming either I'll end up getting those albums and only digging one song off of each, or I'll end up really digging both albums. I'm hoping for that latter.

Sooooooo then...

Who Likes...
Avenged Sevenfold
Bleeding Through
The Haunted
The Bezerker
The New Deicide album
New Fear Factory
Raunchy
or
Caliban
eh...???

The new of wave of metal does nothing for me. Love The Haunted. Deicide are back to their best with their new album.

Oh and Fear Factory are past it. Trying to make a continuation of a record they made 9 years ago isn't cricket. Alot of people are saying it gets boring after repeated spins.

Kane-A-Nite. You wanna be metal? Buy Strapping Young Lad's sophomore album, 'City'. It's damn essential in my books. This album will rip off your scrotum and sew it on your chin.

no, their newest one is 'Soundtrack to Your Escape' and everything i've read about it said thats its nu metal and that it sucked. i heard the song 'The Quiet Place' on the radio Sunday night and really liked it though.

All together now:

:wtf:

The quiet place is nu-metally, as is the rest of that CD. What aussie said is pretty much true, but I like them iddle ones best. (Jester Race, Colony, etc.)

For you, it's hard to say. You like "The Quiet Place" but you want their non-numetal stuff...I'd go with Jester Race. It has a different kind of melody than a lot of bands I've heard. Colony is good too however. Clayman I've heard loads of good things about, but it's the only CD of In Flames I don't own, so I don't want to give you any opinions on that album.

As far as melody goes, Colony or Jester Race, but I'd be willing to bet you'd enjoy "Reroute to Remain" or "Soundtrack to Your Escape" better, and although Reroute is what started putting In Flames in the mainstream level, it's really not that bad of a CD. Some of the songs on it are really good, so for you, I'd say Reroute to Remain is your best bet...or Jester Race, or Colony.

Just get all their albums.

Nah, I have a feeling that if you have heard one Avenged or Bleedingthrough song, then you'll probably like the rest... out of interest, what are the two songs you have heard?

The new of wave of metal does nothing for me.

I wouldn't call those bands that. That term is generally referring to KsE, Chimaira, Shadows Fall, God Forbid etc.

Anyonw who doesn't like Avenged Sevenfold puzzles me, they have everything, great talent, a fantastic singer, long songs, short songs, screaming lyrics, melodic lyrics, one hell of a guitarist, amazing guitar solos, wicked drumming.. and then Bleedingthrough are similar, just heavier and less original. Still damn good though...

My favourite is without a doubt Clayman... Bullet Ride, Only For The Weak, Brush The Dust Away, Pinball Map etc. all top notch songs.

Oh Aussie, why do you make me have to come and correct you? ;) St Anger may suck but it doesn't stop Metallica from having the superior back catalogue

Complete BS.

As I've done many times before RIP beats anything, Youth/Cte beat Load/ReLoad easily.

SFSGSW beats Justice.

Peace sells easily takes down puppets.

Which just leaves Lightning and KeA, which both have songs by Dave on them anyway.

Anyway Edguy > you.

Oh and Avenged have an outstanding live show... however they do look like AFI....

Why always go on about Edguy? I find them good, and inparticular the new album.. But I don't find them any more special than Iced Earth or SymphonyX... each to their own.. but I don't see why you find them so bloody great.

Aussie_Outlaw
April 22nd, 2004, 7:23 AM
How can you compare them to Syx? Completely different Genres. And IE are more of a power thrash.

So how can I find Edguy the greatest band in the history of the world? Well quite simply they write some awesome riffs, awesome solos, songs which you have no idea what they're about. Totally stupid fun songs (Lavatory Love Machine), can play with amazing speed. The drumming is top knotch. Tobi sounds awesome. It just makes me want to throw up the horns and do the weirdest metal grins. It's just the whole vibe of the stuff.

Hellfire Club is good but isn't quite at Mandrake level.

And they don't take themselves seriously!

So in closing
Awesome Riffs
Awesome solos
Decent Song structure
weird lyrics
Tobi can sing
Felix's drumming = supreme.
They're funny.

I suppose that Symphony X are much more progressive, but I just think is better Power Metal out there, not much, but some. And you seem to indicate that they're the greatest Power Metal band out there. I'll try and think of some bands of that genre then, that I find better..

You just described the new wave of heavy metal. The new nu-metal if you like. Where melody and aggression join hands with guitar solos of yesteryear.

To me theyre the musical equivilent of when you could get Gameboy cartridges with 100 games on or something. Theyd be all sorts of games, and theyd all be really really shitty. Ive got the A7X album and its got its good bits, but they really sound like theyre trying too hard to cram in so much, come a cross as a wee bit forced.

Out of curiosity, what kind of metal are In Flames?

Melo-metal? Or is that even a sub-genre?

Ms. Morningstar

In Flames- Melodic Death Metal (I think)

You guys are actually arguing over Power Metal. It's Power Metal, they all rule. :)

Aussie_Outlaw

Either Melodic Death Metal or from the Gothenburg Scene.

You can't really call it Melo-Metal because you'd then have to include Glam/Power into that subgenre.

Also I would say Soundtrack to Your Escape is less commercial than Reroute To Remain.

Except for the single.

Seriously.

It's no Clayman/Jester/Whoracle/Colony but it's a step back from Reroute which is good.

Metal is generally the only genre of music I like. It's what I can get into. :dunno: The sub-genres and stupid labels of metal are a bit ridiculous, though. Glam, prog, nu, avant-garde, power, thrash, death, doom, black, symphonic black (sometimes "faggoth"), grindcore, goregrind, porngrind, funk, nu, hardcore, metalcore, mallcore, norsecore, etc., etc. :(

Then you have people on the Gamefaqs message board arguing whether CoB is power metal or not, and what separates grindcore from death metal, etc. It's anal retentive. That's why I can't stand posting there anymore. :\

Don't know what my point is. :happysad:
