Can we have more PM space please? I have old PMs I want to keep but have hit my limit.

I'm afraid not, no. Try saving them to a Word document?

It is s bit crazy. They can't take up the same relative server space in 2019 that they did 15 years ago when the limit was set.

I'm 952 over my limit

Cewsh

1155

Yeah, the top one is you, next is Rajah, and third is me. You've gotta prune, man.

Other than the three of us, only 5 people are at the limit though. And all of them are either mods or don't post here anymore.

Beefy, you do not have permission to access this page

You know how to hurt me Cewsh.

I'm pruning nothing, my inbox is basically the archive of this community. It's where all the bodies are buried.

How can you be over the limit if it stops you receiving any once you've hit the limit?

Beefy
July 24th, 2019, 4:48 AM
I've been over the limit since GBF's coup. It reduced my inbox to the same size as those of the proletariat.

How come?

CAN'T YOU JUST WRITE THEM DOWN FFS?

?...no

I don’t think it’s necessary. We have limited server space and this issue doesn’t really effect many people.

Beefy

Most things aren't necessary. If it doesn't effect most people changing it won't have any significant impact.

I said no, Beef. I’m happy to revisit it with the mod team and to hear from others if they think this is necessary, but for now it will remain the same.

I wouldn't have minded some extra space seeing as I basically nuked my own inbox. Had to delete tons of stuff just to receive new ones.

MTR
July 24th, 2019, 3:54 PM
Ditto. I deleted a lot of stuff that I didn't want to delete but needed the space to send stuff back and forth and was not in a position to really copy and paste things to a doc or anything.

I got mad and deleted everything one day. I had tons of weird old PM's from some of the strangest people that ever posted here.

Cewsh, how much server space do we have? Also connect the dots for us on how our server space is too small to raise the PM capacity?

If the space were too small(it isnt), it would only require you purging a tiny bit of valueless content to add 500 messages to everyone here 20 times over. Discord stores BILLIONS of messages. By your spacial logic, their server would be the size of california.

Do you have any idea what the server capabilities even are or is this a power thing because YOU SAID NO!!!

Not that a guy who blows everyone off all the time would want to actually help but you do have the ability to export private messages on behalf of your users into it CSV or an XML file quite easily.

If you spent half hour one day you could make a bunch of people super happy

Please write fewer words next time, you're causing undue stress to the servers.

The thing is that Cewsh is overall doing a really good job but his kneejerk reaction to everything is either NO or a blowoff. It's kinda weird.

I don't much care about how many PMs I can have. If I did I'd have cleared some space over the last two years. What I do care about is being brushed off with some nonsensical attempt at a justification which doesn't stand up to four seconds' worth of critical thinking - especially considering the audience in this thread.

Whatever, just be honest.

How much space does it actually take up? Is it any more than a thread for example? Should we be discouraging people from making a popular thread because it’s eating up the server space? Do you know how to increase PM space (this is not a leading question, I never knew how to)?

Cewsh

I’ll be honest, I have no idea how much space it takes up. One of my first questions when I took over was how often pruning threads and the like needed to be done. I never really got an answer and was assured the Katie would take care of it. She may very well be doing so for all I know, but I’ve always been extremely against thread pruning unless it’s extremely necessary. So if giving the whole site 100 extra PMs makes that more necessary then I’m definitely against it. But they might be totally unrelated. Since I’m not sure either way, I’m erring on the side of caution. If it doesn’t matter how many PMs people have, then I’m not sure why such a low limit was set or maintained in the first place.

With that said, if I’m misled here I’m cool with admitting I’m wrong and moving forward. There’s still plenty I don’t know about how the infrastructure of the site works. The people who held it together and made this easy are gone. It’s just me and Rajah sorting it out as we go right now.

Google "how much space do private messages take up vbulletin"

First result

https://forum.vbulletin.com/forum/vbulletin-legacy-versions-products/legacy-vbulletin-versions/vbulletin-2-how-do-i-and-troubleshooting/102280-how-much-space-do-private-messages-take-up

Very little.
In my experience with vB2, the average post per unit storage ratio is about 1,000 posts per MB (not counting post attachments). Private messages are going to be about the same ratio.

on my own forums

tablename = records (size)

vB3 RC3
pm = 111,270 (5.1MB)
pmreceipt = 35,780 (2.8MB)
pmtext = 78,127 (61.2MB)

vB2 2.3.x
privatemessage = 111,933 (82.3 MB)

Going to go out on a limb and say it's sweet fuck all and the limit exists because it made sense 3 million years ago when 200MB of storage was an astronomically large amount. My inbox with 80 messages in it comes out to a paltry 35KB CSV or a 49KB text document.

If they are THAT important you could always go through and screenshot the ones you wanna keep. Hopefully Cewsh can find a solve and turn this into a win. If not, there are options...

Also, actually changing this is the easiest thing ever. It’s just filling in a field. That’s not the issue.

I’d love to know whether we actually have to prune threads too. I assume that if KM used to do it, then we had to, but how much does this website actually cost to maintain and how much to increase the size, what even is the current size? It seems so weird that you can upload an unlimited amount of stuff to YouTube, Facebook etc and yet still have to pay a decent amount for a website and a bulletin board in 2019.

If it is so easy to go to the store and buy milk no one is going to keep using the milk man. The platform itself is clunky and literally outdated.

It’s more he didn’t take it away. The backend of the forums is a big mess right now and Raj had to come in and do something which unfortunately took away your special setting. I know where to go to change the amount. There really aren’t a lot of people who would benefit from it but that also means there aren’t a lot who would strain the system. We aren’t going to give infinite though. Beefy for example will probably never be able to receive a PM. I will check if we could increase up to 500. With things being such a mess at the back end I just want to make sure we are good server space wise. I imagine so but let’s just check.
