One of my favourite parts of the show was Lambert cracking on Cody’s tattoo and fans took a moment from booing him to applauding it. Also his “I prefer Jim Cornette!” comeback to the Heyman burn from Brandi.
Also shame they had a minor misstep with the Malakai Black segment when they cut back too early and you could see him walking to the back.

Jericho's pyro going off for the comeback run in was deffo lame. And was there a timing issue? Garcia and commentary seemed to be stalling to me. Would have made more sense for Jericho to appear before his buddy was taken out with the weapon. We'll see if that's where they go with Kingston being pissed.
WWE gets dicked on for camera cuts and I was paying particular attention to Jade and Thunder and it looked just the same to me?
JR lamenting heel Jade Cargill for sipping a bottle of water, yet super baby Adam Page was doing the same thing 10 minutes into his match with Danielson the other week. Made me chuckle a bit.
That main event and Chuck Taylor. Chuck gets criticised for his physique quite a bit, but for me, there was one of the 6 in that match with a worse physique than him and that's Adam Cole. He really should work on that.
Kyle O'Reilly is a terrible, terrible promo. I mean, he's clear, doesn't stumble over his words or anything. He's an overacter, basically. Perhaps trying too hard. Much like Ruby Soho, though she is better.
I tend to pick up on negative things, but I do enjoy AEW, honest. Nice to see JR back, but Taz is much better. :D

Sounds fine and accurate to me.
Swole just wants to magically make black people champions who aren't ready. She claims to care about other "people of color" but everyone knows that's all she's ever cared about.
Maybe if they get Keith Lee she'll get her wish, he should be a star instantly.
I could see Swerve as TNT champion.
They might give Jade the TBS title but she's so green I'd rather see it on Ruby so we can get good open challenge matches with people like Ember Moon who hopefully joins.
Diversity just for the sake of it is terrible and Swole claims to be against pandering but that's exactly what she wants. Her matches with Diamante sucked. Swole has charisma but can't wrestle.

Khan’s reply seems pretty stupid.
From my perspective, AEW has been pretty diverse from the beginning. Their first three womens' champions have either been asian or native american (transgender), half of the first tag champs was black, their current tag champs are Mexican, their most recent TNT champion is of hispanic origin, Jade Cargill is positioned to be the first TBS champion. Sonny Kiss got plenty of tv time last year (?), etc. Swole herself was featured prominently in her program with Britt Baker and Swole actually won that blowoff match. So her saying this seems...odd. Tony Khan never said Swole, as a black person, wasn't good enough as I've heard people saying. He said her "wrestling" wasn't good enough.

It's really about the optics and how Tony Khan made it a personal attack when what Swole said, incorrect or not, was very respectful. I get he was probably offended that it was implied he's racist, but it was still a really unprofessional move that doesn't really look great for the leader of a company. The fact he felt the need to back it up with examples of all the brown people he's pushed/employed is tone deaf, and he has a record of getting defensive when called out on anything.
I agree that diversity isn't nearly as much of an issue in AEW as some make it out. But I don't think Tony's response was really well thought-out and was emotional move that makes him come off like a dick.

Spot on here.
A simple statement regarding AEW's commitment to diversity and any significant achievements was all that was needed.
This is Tony's first foray beyond businesses is his father has had direct control of. One would expect some growing pains. He also might learn why most companies don't court social media drama.

Have you actually read the article, though? She never said anything nearly as bad as the headline makes it out to be. Half of it wasn't even about race. She even said she had no problems with Tony Khan and wants the company to succeed. But everyone acts as if she said, "Tony Khan is a racist piece of shit."
What Mazer said is right. Acknowledging that the company doesn't have the diversity problem that's being projected is fine. But the reactionary tone is unprofessional.

Not everything someone says a company needs more diversity, are they accusing someone of being racist.
To say that a person can't state they would like to see more diversity, particularly as they are speaking about how their ethnicity is written...seems like quite a standard.
It's also interesting that the click bait analysis ignored that she also expressed that she'd like to see some changes in the way the women's division is handled.

Big Swole on her podcast said that a lack of diversity and structure led to her and AEW mutually deciding to part ways.
On her Call In podcast (h/t Fightful), Swole discussed how the structure within the company seemed to be “a little off”, pointing out the lack of time for women and new talent coming in.
“I know fans of the company don't take criticism well sometimes. But know this, this is someone from the inside, the structure is a little off,” she said. “It's fine to be loose, but I like to have a little bit more structure. I felt like the women shouldn't have gone through everything they went through just to get on time. You're signed to this big company, you should get time. All these men are getting time, but the women aren't getting anything or you're not putting people on TV because more people are coming in. There are more people coming in, but you don't have enough product for all of these people.”
Swole also discussed what she felt was a lack of diversity, particularly within AEW’s hierarchy.
“I do not beat around the bush when it comes to diversity and my people,” she said. “There is no representation, truly, and when there is, it does not come across in the black community as genuine, at all. And I don't know why everybody is so afraid to accept it or say it, but it's not a good look. What happens is, you have this wonderful company that treats people like family, but there is nobody that looks like me that is represented at the top. They are not in the room with them. They’re not helping to necessarily influence decisions, but to explain why certain slang, why they are certain words that shouldn't be said. There is no one else who can explain our culture and experience except for us."
“I believe that [AEW] is making better strides than before, but a couple of things need to be fixed,” she later added. “You have to be able to call people out because not everything is not perfect. I hope they listen to this with an open heart and not just, 'Ah, she's just saying this because of XYZ.' I genuinely want them to succeed. I love art. I love to be creative and I love wrestling and I want it to succeed and I want the people in it to succeed if they are genuine people. I want WWE to succeed. I just want wrestling to flourish and I don't want it to be a long-forgotten, Tartarian sport where 'in the old days, we used to wrestle,' I want nothing but the best, but I also want the change and application to happen. With promises you made to be diverse, I want to see that. Not just with black people. I would love to see a dark-skinned Latina or Latino or Hispanic or just something, more Asians. I feel like Asians, Indians do not get love. They just don't. It's such a big gap. I hate the fact that I turn on the TV and it's the same stuff over and over again, like the Truman show. Hopefully, they get the message.”

Okay, now I wasn't going to get real into this, but I feel like I have to say my peace. I emphasized some stuff in bold to make my points. First off, so, I'm guessing Brandi doesn't count? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't one of the reasons people give her shit is because she's unapologetically "black". Like her code-switching statements she made last year, people gave her crap for it. But as a black man that "talks white" I can see where she was coming from with that. I mean, someone literally wanted me to do the Carlton dance one time or "go ghetto". I...was not...well, that's for another day. But what does "genuine" mean for the "black community"? Sorry to keep using quotes, and if I'm off base I'll hear people out. But what exactly is the black community and what is genuine to them? Far as I know, we're not homogonies.
Second, since when do the asian wrestlers not get attention? People like Cornette have shitted on the fact that AEW has prominently featured the Joshi wrestlers from the beginning. Suzuki, Ishi, and others from New Japan have had main events on the show. Wheeler Yuta was hyped up as a big deal. Unless I'm missing something, what more do you want? Not saying you shouldn't want to see people from all over get representation on tv, but they've done way more in that regard than the other company without making it stereotypical. Most of the time.
For the women specifically, I know people want two women's matches on tv, but people forget that women's wrestling is still pretty niche. If the story calls for it, I'm all for having more than one match on tv. But they also only have two shows on network tv, and from what I've seen, AEW does a pretty good job of having a niche match or segment on each show. Opener, tag, women, specialty or main event.
One final thing, and I won't rant on this further, but one of the things that people like about AEW is that it is a pretty loose atmosphere. Do you really want Tony Khan to micromanage everything like Vince does? Tear up scripts before showtime? Khan has storyline plans and from what I've seen doesn't deviate that much if he can help it.
Keep in mind, I actually liked what I saw from Big Swole when others were saying she was terrible. Most curious this whole situation.

You should keep a consistent story. First you're mad because you think she implied Tony Kahn was a racist. Now you're mad that she.....didn't also include enough light-skinned people (even though she referenced Latinos and Dark-skinned Latin0s-separately).
First, you said she said that she didn't count other minorities. She specifically mentioned separate groups. Dark-skinned latinos were just one of the groups. She also said that they were making progress, but wanted to see more. She did speak at points at her perspective as a Black person in particular:
“I do not beat around the bush when it comes to diversity and my people,” she said. “There is no representation, truly, and when there is, it does not come across in the black community as genuine, at all. And I don't know why everybody is so afraid to accept it or say it, but it's not a good look. The reality is, there isn't much diversity in AEW but there isn't that much diversity in pro wrestling as well. But I mean, AEW did make a transgender their women's champion and their first tag-team champions were SCU-which contains a black dude.

See, to Bert it's pandering. That's the disconnect. Bert is from a time where everyone was given a trophy for simply showing up to field day and he was raised by people who told him racism was a myth. A hip hop head who hates the message. Weird right? Like those Republicans who were blasting Rage Against The Machine.
Bert probably wish Tom Morello would stick to rock music and stay out of politics.

The reality is, there isn't much diversity in AEW but there isn't that much diversity in pro wrestling as well.

I like when people say there's a lack of diversity and they're still pointing out the lack of diversity. Oh wow, Lucha Bros have been tag-team champions for a month or two looks like All Elite Whites is ok. Remember how some of you defend the Proud Boys by talking about how they made a Latino their leader after the fact? Kind of the same thing. I mean, even nowadays if you're HIspanic you don't even get that as an option. You're basically white now as well it's weird.

One thing I wanted to mention is that when AEW has a street fight or some other match of that sort (Lights Out, Parking Lot Brawl, etc), you know you're going to get a hell of a fight. Conti, Anna Jay, Penelope Ford, and the Blood Bunny, as I now call her, put on a hell of a show and that should have been the main event. A little tidbit that I noticed a few months back watching some of the blogs Bunny does, is that she'll be all happy and nice with everyone, munching on Oreos, but if Tay or Anna are in the background, or walking by she'll switch to "fuck you bitch, I hate you," then be back to normal. I forgot what initially started their blood feud, but it's a small detail, yet still great.

You say that but AEW seems to really not want to have good women's wrestling whatsoever. The only good women's match they've ever had was the hardcore match with Thunder Rosa v. Britt Baker and even that was probably a 4/10 in comparison to the majority of matches just in NXT over the last year or 2.

Understand that, but I felt they could’ve added to the suspense a little more by having Hangman get even more frustrated. They could’ve had him hit a double Buckshot (one from each side) to still finish it off with plenty time left.
The match was still great but felt there was still a bit more mileage and story left.

I might be putting my own spin on it, but from JR's commentary, it sounded as if they're trying to really protect the Buckshot Lariat as a one and done finisher. Myself, I'm all for that. Especially when you have guys that can make it look even more devastating. There shouldn't be mulitple V-Triggers, Superkicks, or Superman punches unless they're trying to establish that a guy is ultra tough. Speaking of, I think the Orange Punch has been pretty protected, as has others. And if Hangman eventually goes up against Omega again, it'll look even better.
Before the situation, people were saying Jade as going to win for weeks. The fact that there was some logical kafabe reasons why it could have gone to someone else is great in terms of building the other women in the division. Until the Mercedes interference FROM OUTTA NOWHERE, I thought they were going to go with Thunder Rosa and Ruby since this is supposed to be the workhorse title and you already have a heel champ in Britt. Then have Jade go on a tear to get revenge for losing "her title" that she was destined for (and get more match experience in the process). But, we'll see how it goes this way. I mean, whoever does topple the unstoppable monster will get a huge feather in their cap.
Going back to the tag match and that awful table incident, why would people be giving Luchasaurus a hard time about it? I could be completely wrong, but from every table spot I've seen, the person going through the table will bring their limbs inside. I'm not saying Fenix was at fault either, because that looked instinctual, trying to brace for the fall.
On a lighter note, Punk saying MJF can headline night four of a buy one get one special attraction had me legit laughing out loud. It seemed people at first didn't know what to make of him attacking a fellow Chicagoan, but it was all made clear that it was to ruin MJF's 2022 record from the get go. Good stuff. Now we'll see if Wardlow'll get a few powerbombs in on Punk. I'd say he gets one. Hell, they might do a swerve and he destroys Punk (although I can't imagine he'd take multiple ones like we've seen from other opponents) and Punk suffers his first loss. And interesting way to make a "loser's" feud.

I wouldn't say the women's division is subpar, but that's for another time. Me saying "supposed" is my supposition. Given that you can't, or rather don't put Britt in a wrestling match all the time (as they shouldn't, since you need to make her and the title special), why introduce another title if it isn't supposed to get featured on a more regular basis? Not saying the TBS title has to be an open challenge every week, but I expect you'd have people specifically in matches where the idea to get over is that they're working to get that title shot. While the AEW Women's title is reserved for either special shows or ppvs. Maybe have it where TBS is for declared shots, while the AEW is only for ranked competitors. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to recall the TNT title having significant show appearances. So, if the TBS one is going to be the women's equivalent, then I would expect the same thing.

We'll start off with the bold. The fact it maybe took 2 Crossroads to beat a jobber is why it was not a pretty good one. If it takes the same energy to beat Sonny Kiss as it does Brodie Lee, there's something seriously wrong with the booking.
The workhorse term is not being used properly. Being featured every week doesn't mean you're a workhorse. The TV title was featured every week, but I wouldn't call Miro a workhorse.
And what you're suggesting about the TBS title is pretty much how the TNT title is also used. Rankings don't matter as it was pointed out to me when I was questioning how guys like Diego Del Jabroni could get a title shot with only 1 win out of 27 or how new people just show up and automatically jump the line.
Jade Cargill is someone who shines and in AEW they need that. They don't have a good women's roster. The best women they have can barely have a good match against each other so we're fucked for awhile. Not renewing Big Swole's contract was a step in the right direction.

I just want Jade to get better so she can have open challenges with good wrestlers like Ember Moon, Mia Yim, and Toni Storm instead of just squashing like Madi Wrenkowksi or whoever. Maybe some ROH ones too, I'm not that familiar with their roster.

Jade's only chance at truly evolving will be working the loop with Thunder Rosa...oh wait, AEW doesn't do anything but TV and youtube so she's fucked.
Honestly I don't think she's that bad in comparison to everyone else in AEW. Literally EVERYONE else, men included. She's easily a top 25 performer in AEW.

Really enjoyed the Danielson/Page match, the MJF/Punk promo, and the tag championship match. Everything else didn't really do anything for me but I still thought it was a great episode. Wardlow/Punk next week should be interesting.
Nasty injury on Fenix, I hope he's ok. I read it's wasn't broken so hopefully if it was just dislocated he'll be back on his feet before too long as they go into a feud with Black and, I assume, Brody King. From what I've seen of King on Youtube over the past week or so I'm intrigued to see him debut.

Danielson easily could have rested on the paycheck by leading Yes! chants, but he’s continuing to earn incredible stripes by churning out bangers in AEW. That was a lot of blood for that match lol. Probably unnecessary but oh well. Will be interesting to see where the two guys go from here.
Punk and MJF are still boiling at a great rate. It seemed obvious that MJF’s delivery at the end was a setup for Punk and Wardlow. That coordinates well enough to finally kick off the turn for Wardlow. Imagine Punk or Spears causes the loss for Wardlow and then he snaps.
Chuckled hard as JR waxed about how Jade doesn’t live on the top rope as she decided to deliver a strike off the top rope. Jade has an incredibly majestic and great look but she’s not ready for this spot. Now she’s going to have to do more, develop on the fly, and defend on a fairly regular basis. I don’t think that’s a good combo.
Ugly spot for Fenix. Hope he has a smooth and speedy recovery.
Nash Diesel
January 7th, 2022, 6:22 PM
I find it odd to assume Danielson wasn't having bangers up until he left WWE last year. The only difference I see is blood. He main evented WM and had match of the night but yes, he was just resting on a paycheck. Like Tony Khan is paying him peanuts. This motherfucker is getting that Jon Moxley money-the highest paid wrestler of 2020, more than Roman Reigns and Seth.
The weird narrative that Tony Khan is apparently poor or can't match Vince's money is laughable. He's said it himself, he has more money than Vince and he's living our dream. If I had his money I would've done the same thing if I were approached by the top underground talent.

I'm going to keep saying this: a four man booth is really not necessary. If anyone has to go, it should Jericho. He has a habit of stepping over people, and he yells too much. I get he's trying to be hyped, but I can only take that in small doses. If the goal is to keep Ricky prominent and get better at speaking, then have him, Excalibur, and "maybe" Taz.
Something that I didn't know about until recently was that apparently it's a fundamental for wrestling (he I just watch it, I've never done it) where you have one person as a "base" for the other person to do their moves off of. So if you have a smaller person, like Riho, they love to base off a bigger person, like Hayter. Makes sense and now I can not unsee it when watching. Plus, Hayter's worked Japan with them before from what I've read, so it makes sense that whenever those two fight, they make each other look good.
Hook started as a meme, then the legend grew. He should never speak. And if they aren't offering their own brand of Hook chips at concessions, that's money on the table they are leaving behind. It will be interesting to see how he does when going up against not only a veteran, but a star veteran, that can counter his counters.

Table is putting in work, isn't it? After it got a taste of fire from Cody (damn you, Cody!), its been going all out to mess up everybody: not breaking for the streetfight, that awful thing with Fenix, Sammy and Dustin tonight and then trying to take out Hayter's leg tonight. I think 3 man is good with a straight man pbp, a heel colour and a face colour. The problem I think here is they are all face until that 4th special guest (usually heel to liven it up like when Callis is brought in for example) livens things up.
Personally think Tony is the best of the three as he has a “plot” if you like. The “straight man” but also has to keep up his loyalties to a heel in Baker. Excalibur is just there and doesn’t add much and as harsh as this sounds to JR, he’s just there on rep. You get Ricky or someone like Joe on Dynamite commentary then there’s a good shake-up!

How does Dustin do a better Crossroads than Cody? I guess because he's Dustin? Take notes, Cody!
Every time I see Ricky take a head bump like that it makes me cringe given what we saw happen to his neck before. Stop doing this Ricky!
When Britt had the belt in hand, I for sure thought she was going to waylay Riho in the head in front of the ref (like right in front on purpose, so even his blind ass can see it), and get intentionally DQ'ed. Instead, they had Riho tap immediately. A headscratcher for me, but I guess it works. Would have been better if they kept up the Britt's never beaten Riho storyline, but can't have 'em all, I guess. I'm seeing in other places, and I would concur, that the current Baker title reign has run its course. I know people assume Thunder Rosa will take the belt off her, but I wouldn't be surprised if they throw a curve ball and have her retain one more time just to subvert expectations.
All in all, it was a fun one hour show. Get in, have some good matches, get out. Glad that people that bought tickets got a full, longer show.

Also I can’t wait for Wardlow to explode either. Couple of roads they could go down here I think. Either tease it again after the Punk/Spears match but then BOOM! after MJF/Punk match once MJF chews him out for another screw-up. Another way is after there’s a screw-up in the Spears match, MJF chews him out backstage and tells him to sit out accompanying him to face Punk and has Spears do it instead then Wardlow comes down later to even up the odds on purpose taking out Spears then Punk wins.
Either way is good to me.

I was most interested in seeing the Punk/Wardlow match and it was interesting but for very weird reasons. Punk was beaten to oblivion and the ref didn’t want to look out for his well being and stop of the match. You essentially got the visual pin of Punk, so that doesn’t help when the “underling” beats Punk rather easily. Wardlow looks great but you just set up a match you want to see (kind of) more at this point in MJF and Wardlow.
Seems like that episode should have been paced/sequence much better because the second half of that show lacked quite a bit of sizzle compared to the first half.

However, I'm not sure of the wisdom of running it back at this level. They sold merch at NXT and popped, but didn't seem to draw ratings (not like many people actually do draw). Just doesn't seem like it will help grow AEW.
If there's ever a true invasion angle that is well-executed, I will retract any critique.

Demo doesn't mean near as much as it used to, as a lot companies are actually trying to broaden appeal. Looking at ad cost tracking, the demo mark-up is getting smaller and smaller, and largely non-existent.
Regardless those ratings estimates were still typically within MOE, and not sustained. It was close enough where measurement error was often as likely a source as actual viewership. The overall trend has not been kind to NXT and resulted in the move. UE was near omnipresent when NXT was basically moved out of direct competiation.
And look, I own a UE shirt. I liked those weekly shows better than the current greenies (although there are some I like).
I just don't see evidence that they can expand the base. Particularly if they run a similar play.

Take into consideration who brags about the "Key demo" which literally no wrestling fan or really any dirt sheet idiot spoke about until AEW. Imagine 25 years ago and Bert is like "Well, Raw beat Nitro in the key demo!!" Shit back then it actually mattered. Now, not so much because advertisers don't solely rely on television to advertise these days.
Rumor is Cody is working without a contract. Would be interesting if he went somewhere else. No desire to see him in WWE though. Unless it's a surprise Rumble showing only to be eliminated by Madcap Moss.
It would be fucking hilarious if it was Cody. The WWE already showed AEW who runs this shit by putting Jericho on a WWE show. Notice you don't see any contracted WWE talent going on an AEW show. Jericho talking all that shit and jumps at the chance to be back on WWE programming.
Cody....All that slighting of Triple H-while saying he's his favorite and learned so much-would be hilarious. I'm not a big WWE mark, but I do enjoy when talent of any kind shit on the WWE so hard and then go back the second Vince allows it.

I want Stardust in AEW. Or on the show Heels where he goes into the multi verse of wrestling and demands a match with Jack Spade.

Hmm. Interesting. Maybe they're trying to get some kind of footage of Cody and Tony having a Bret-Vince Wrestling with Shadows moment?

Same here. Stardust needs to be bigger than wrestling.

I would even go as far as bringing in Ascension, obviously under a different name. I enjoyed their trio. Not to mention, they could easily say Kris Statlander brought Stardust over to AEW.
How would Broken Matt Hardy work into this? Wasn't he some type of celestial being?

Even though the dude was stuck in some bullshit here and there in WWE and AEW he's been my 2nd favorite wrestler next to Asuka, pretty much since CM Punk left WWE.

I have 2 tickets to AEW Rampage in DC, Section 106. I can't go. You have to show proof you had a shot in order to go. Email me: greebull@gmail.com

Do you think 25 years ago when Sting was hanging from the rafters with Macho Man Randy Savage about to fight off the nWo that he was thinking he'd still be doing this?

Mox looks good. Dropped some weight and looks like he’s in much better shape. Mox vs House of Black, please.

Good on Mox.
If they keep Britt appearing with Adam, that will mitigate some of my earlier concern about them just running Undisputed Era back.

Great Moxley promo. Wasn’t intentional but he absolutely neutered Jericho’s feeble attempt to get GYF over.
I thought Cody did a nice job navigating the crowd through his promo. It was certainly a good promo and will have people talking. I don’t get why he needed to go with the Jay Lethal route and the Brodie route. Those felt a little too forced.
I’m very curious to see how the Anna/Jade match goes.
Sting is something else.

Absolutely, just looks a lot healthier. Its hard for people to be perfect, and never have a relapse. I hope if he does, people will be understanding. We're all rooting for Mox.
I actually liked Cody's promo quite a bit, and think he won the crowd a bit (ever so slightly), which is a significant accomplishment in and of itself. That's going to be hard to sustain week after week, but good on him for going for it.

It was good but the more I thought about it, it took shots at things that didn't necessarily need it. Like, why take a shot at the tag feud that's eventually going to happen (reDRagon & The Bucks) and you're not even involved in it? Same with the Brody/Brodie thing, then mentioning Lethal and Black. The stuff actually in relation to him and the match with Guevara was solid but the rest just felt like a State of the Union (according to Cody) address.
