Nope.
Before the Network was dumped into Peacock, I was trying to rewatch Nitro and Raw from the beginning of Raw, and then watch ECW for the first time. The switch to Peacock put a wrench in that since I lost momentum without being able to access all of it from the jump and eventually stopped giving so much of a shit about wrestling.
In the thick of 1996, ECW was telling the most interesting stories at the time, WCW had probably the best actual wrestling on their shows, and WWF were absolute shit. WCW may not have had the most compelling storylines going on all the time, but there were stories being told. They had the NWO, and while there were times that matches would occur without real storyline behind them, it fed into the NWO which **was** a storyline that fans paid attention to.
The matches were mostly cold matches. They had angles throughout the show with certain people yes, but when you turned on Nitro and it was Jerry Flynn v. Chris Jericho, then Harlem Heat v. Public Enemy, maybe Juventud v. Super Calo for the CW title despite Calo never winning a match. The main event was usually nWo guy v. top WCW guy fighting the nWo (Hall v. Luger, DDP v. Buff, etc).
WCW had a bloated roster. Very few people outside the nWo storyline had much going on.

Again, not true. WCW had at least two other shows on TBS which fed into whatever went on on Nitro. Saturday Night on, well Saturday Night, and Main Event on Sundays. Not to mention syndicated shows like WCW Worldwide. *YOU* may not have seen them as anything other than cold matches, but there were for sure stories going on on those other shows which led to a match on Nitro.
ETA: Bloated roster? Sure. I'll give you that. WCW was owned by a media conglomerate. They had the money to have a bloated roster.

I disagree. To YOU there might have been some connection to why Jerry Flynn and Chris Jericho had a random match that went nowhere on Nitro but I didn't see it that way.
And yes, they like AEW had the bankroll to have a bloated roster. That lead to what, 2 years of somewhat good television and then what? Where is WCW now? They had too many wrestlers and the show suffered. I 100% have always felt WCW had the edge in overall wrestling up until Benoit and those guys left. After that, WWF was the shit and late 1999/early-mid 2000 saw WWF get the highest ratings during the 90's/Attitude Era IIRC.

If there were story elements told on one show building to a Jerry Flynn/Chris Jericho match on another, you would. Not making a proclamation here that Jerry Flynn and Chris Jericho had a build up on Main Event leading to a match on Nitro, but there were for sure wrestlers who had storylines from Saturday Night lead to things happening on Nitro.

WCW's shows suffered for many reasons. Bloated roster wasn't the prime suspect. Also, if you think that WCW only had 2 years of good television, that's sad. Because there's a lot more to WCW than just NWO that's worth watching, going as far back as the pre-Turner buyout/Jim Crockett Promotion days of Mid-Atlantic.
WWE isn't exactly starving for revenue. They could keep whomever and do whatever they want with them or not and just pay them a downside. They're quite possibly the most profitable they've ever been in spite of possibly the most criticism they've gotten from their fans and with what would appear to be some of the worst ratings trends they've ever had **and** a goddamned pandemic that literally kept audiences away. It's as possible that they're attempting another shift of vision to the company as it is that they're prepping for sale. Vince is old. He absolutely could be looking to sell to Disney or Comcast or Fox. At the end of the day, business is about money and how to make it. Vince has proven that in spite of himself, he can make money. I don't believe Vince is necessarily looking to sell right this minute, but it sure as hell looks as if he's looking to eventually sell this thing off, because there's a time where he's not going to be around to steer that ship - successfully or unsuccessfully. His dad sold the business to him. He's going to have to sell it to someone eventually too.
I don't know what AEW's financials look like, or how that's set up. But those Khans seem to also have a bottomless pit of cash. The Khans seem to at least have the one thing that Vince and the WWE don't at the moment. Momentum with the fanbase.

Again, I'm not saying Nitro didn't have storylines. I'm saying most of the matches on their shows were cold with nothing to them. That's just how I viewed. I'm rewatching early 1999 Nitro right now to understand the point of the Fingerpoke of Doom booking. Not too many matches with a purpose on the show.
There are many reasons why WCW failed. And I will agree that pre-Nitro WCW had a few good moments especially before it became Hogan and Friends and obviously the NWA days were really good. WCW itself didn't do very well, they were losing money until I believe late 1996 early 1997 as it was and ratings were not very good for any of their shows. That's just a totally different story that doesn't need told in this thread again.

Not how I read the part that I literally quoted in the first post I made addressing the topic where you said it was "like one match" that had a storyline going into it "whatsoever." Further, to go with your example in 1999 lies outside of your range of 1996-1997 that you gave earlier. Or I'm nitpicking. Whichever.

It was like one match that had an actual storyline attached to it. The show had angles throughout the night but the matches were cold. You'd have a segment in the ring with Piper and Hogan, and then a match that meant nothing for the CW title.
My bad I'll try and stick to the years of Nitro I was referring to. Just so we're clear, we're not going to include Crockett-era WCW unless you meant the tv show they used to have called World Championship Wrestling but IDK if that was Crockett. Either way, whatever works for you Wizz. However you want to argue your point.

Christ almighty you're still trying to do this. Give me a random Monday in 1996-1997, and I'll watch the Nitro, and take a look at a recap of the Saturday Night or see if I can't track it down somehow and tell you any storylines that bled over.

From 1988 to 2001. Seems to me there's got to be more than two years worth of television that are good out of 13 years. You're talking Vader's monstrous reign as champion and Ron Simmons' win. Sting continuously taking up Ric Flair's offers at being a Horseman only to be beaten down every time. Dangerous Alliance stuff. Peak Steiners in the tag division. There's plenty to like about WCW that isn't just Monday Night Wars shit.

That could be fun. Ok. August 26th, 1996. Let me know how many of those matches that happened were part of an actual storyline. This was a show I just watched not too long ago because someone told me that Flair/Anderson v. Rock N Roll Express happened on this episode. Totally forgot about it.
Ok that's on me. When I said WCW I wasn't including the NWA. I even went into talking specifically about Nitro. So yes, you're right if we're going back to the late 80's early 90's before it was WCW, before Nitro. A few spurts here and there from 1992-1996 but nothing I was super into.
I apologize for bringing WCW into this discussion as you are without a shadow of a doubt the most knowledgeable on what feuds were going on during 1996-1997 such as The Giant v. Hacksaw Jim Duggan.

I was into 1996 when I stopped my rewatch because of Nitro not being available on Peacock during the WWE Network move. I'm not proclaiming to be be the arbiter of WCW knowledge in the known universe. Friday at 10pm with Brandon Cutler in the main event along with the Bunny vs Tai Conti doesn't sound appealing. Dynamite is the number 2 show and that's fine. I don't expect them to be at 1 million every week. I think their numbers can beat NXT though.

So far every Rampage has had that 1 cool segment/match and then everything else was either weak or average. Omega v. Christian=awesome, CM Punk back from the dead=incredible, CM Punk just being there=tremendous.
Dynamite was kind of lackluster for me. I'll be honest, right now in AEW, I don't really think anything is even in the same universe as CM Punk. It could be Punk v. one of those Dork Order jobbers and that would be the most intriguing part of AEW by lightyears. But the number was good for AEW. 1.1 I believe?
I don't think we can use the timeslot as an excuse. 722k, that's not terrible for AEW. That's not really any different than Dynamite had been consistently doing for a long time. Is Wednesday, which always seemed to be treated like the worst night of the work week (church possibly??), really any better than Friday @ 10pm? 9pm here in IA. I mean, I get that we like to pretend we're just so fucking busy and have these entertaining lives where we can't fit wrestling in on a Friday....but come on, of course it'll get better ratings than fucking NXT.
CM PUNK on his own should be able to draw 500,000 viewers, how can NXT realistically compete with the name value AEW has had since the jump? Samoa Joe v. CM Punk was legendary, but Joe isn't the name that Punk is. Joe chose to go to TNA for creative freedom, Punk chose to go to WWE to cry about it like the typical poser punk he is. "Chick Magnet" was under oath by the way. Under oath. No real punk calls themselves a chick magnet. Dude probably had Rancid and a bunch of fuckin Counting Crows shit lol

The 722k number doesn't really seem bad in the grand scheme. Would clearly love to have a better number but certainly not worth scoffing at 722k (know you weren't, just saying). The problem this week with the slate of programming was that it just felt like everything was subdued or more on the filler side.

I'd be interested to see the ratings of episodes where a debut happened vs. a non-debut episodes. I know the first episode had Jake Hager's debut, so it makes sense it got such a high number, but what about debuts with Sting, Malachi Black, Andrade, Big Show, etc?

I see what you're saying Don. I remember an article about how after Sting's surprise debut supposedly TNT wasn't a fan of AEW not promoting it. Probably just rumor because it also said TNT didn't want anymore surprise debuts yet we had Black and Andrade, and technically CM Punk wasn't advertised but we all knew going in he was showing up which is why the number was so high on Rampage.
I'll be honest, I don't think advertising any of those names would've done much. I don't see Dynamite getting an extra 4-500,000 viewers for someone like Black or Andrade if it was promoted the week prior.

They need Ruby in AEW badly. She's average in the ring, but Britt Baker looks like prime Kurt Angle compared to the majority of that division. If we can get Britt v. Ruby I think it'll be very good. Ruby v. Thunder Rosa is another match that will be good.

Kind of an interesting use of finishing a match during PiP. Honestly, it made sense because the match was serving the purpose of the stuff after the match so skimming ahead through PiP made it more effective.

Last night was a really fun show to be there live for. That said, the closing segment was actually pretty awkward live. I think the crowd was expecting some kind of surprise save or something, and the beatdown seemed like it dragged, so the crowd was mostly dead. Not sure how it came across on TV or exactly how much was on the air. The crowd did find Kenny's antics amusing at least, but eh
Being there live for FTR/Santana & Ortiz was really awesome. Easily match of the night. Also really dug the Punk/Darby segment.

Was Sting's promo televised or was that a commercial break thing?
Yeah the ending segment was bad. Nothing wrong with having the heels get heat and beat down the faces before the ppv but the dramatic timing was awful. Have Kenny and the bucks hit everyone in the head with the kendo sticks and then go off the air while their music is playing, they’re posing, and the commentary is yelling about the baby faces wanting revenge at the ppv. Instead of fading the black while Kenny is wandering around the ring mumbling incoherently lol
Psycho666Soldier
September 3rd, 2021, 9:57 AM
All of that. The idea behind the segment was smart. The execution and timing just missed the mark.
I dipped out for the dark match main event(Mox/Darby/Kingston vs. someone), but I'm sure that was a much more satisfying end for those who stayed.

It was the wrestling match I was looking forward to the most. Punk v. Darby is the match in general I'm wanting to see the most but I felt like PAC v. Andrade was going to tear the house down.
I just figure since Jungle Boy doesn't have a match why not?
Jungle Boy has a match. They announced and added a ten man tag for the buy in. Jurassic Express, Orange, Taylor, Yuta vs Hardy, Private Party, TH2
That being said I love the idea of a Andrade/Jungle Boy match. Needs to happen.

Ugh. I really want to see this ppv but $50 not in the budget right now. :( Between tickets for last weekend to see NWA Empower and new laptop and trying to stash money back for ticket to Full Gear just not going to happen. Maybe my daughter who has like no bills except her car payment and student loan can pay for it. :chin:

Yeah I had only seen a little bit of Dynamite as I was trying to fix a broken shower while it was on so I missed that part. What a weird match to put on the buy in.
What about Andrade v. Archer? I'm not big on Archer, but I think you need to have Andrade against someone worth a damn.
And why isn't Black on this ppv?? I know they're trying their best to make him a heel, and failing miserably considering the crowd hates everyone he's kicked the shit out of including Arn. But THANK GOD Big Show v. QT Marshall is on the card. Man, to think Big Show left the WWE bitching about how he didn't want to work with nobodies from NXT and here is working with a straight up fuckin nobody.

I think they added it to just keep the whole Hardy group vs Orange and his friends thing going. They moved the Women's Casino Battle Royal to the main card after adding this match.
I would be okay with Archer vs Andrade.
Not sure why Black is not on the show. I like QT. I mean that being said not exactly excited about him vs Wight but I do like QT.

I have literally hated QT since Ring of Honor. I hate his fucking name, it makes me vomit in my mouth. A 40 year old man calling himself "Cutie Marshall". I will say this, he would be more tolerable somewhere like HWA back in the late 90's or even OVW but you'd never see that version get drafted to the main roster.
He would've been the guy they draft and put the Eugene gimmick on him or something. And whatever happened to the boxer they had?
MTR
September 3rd, 2021, 1:07 PM
Yeah I don't think QT is like a superstar or anything but I do kind of like him. Not sure what happened to the boxer. He just kind of disappeared. I'm really trying to pump myself up for Moxley v. Kojima. Moxley isn't very good, I love the guy but as a wrestler, very mediocre. Kojima is not the same Kojima that carried both Triple Crown and IWGP titles years ago. I didn't even know he wrestled a little bit recently for Impact for fuck's sake. Why??
It just feels like if we could get Kojima from 10-15 years ago v. DEAN AMBROSE when he was WWE champ on Smackdown, that would've been killer. Now it's just kind of, meh. Mox looks so lazy these days. He looks like he's pilled out/drunk lol.

Also totally agreed on the last segment. Bringing the cage down with Omega stealing the keys was brilliant but they overextended themselves with the face beatdown and should have ended it with the heels posing. Maybe there was a production or timing miscue and they had to cut it down there and then.

Dudes a mark, but I love it.
So, if Adam Cole is coming in I'm thinking maybe he's under the ring during the cage match and helps the Bucks retain. If that's not the case then I hope Lucha Bros win honestly. A lot of people seem to think Proud n Powerful win the belts at Grand Slam and I love those guys but Lucha Bros are also over as fuck and Fenix bends gravity to his will on a nightly basis.
I really have no clue what you do with Bryan Danielson. The only thing I've been thinking is maybe Omega wins and is beating up Christian and Bryan comes out to make the save. It would be similar to Christian saving Jungle Boy from a beat down before and he didn't immediately enter into a title program with Omega so I don't think Bryan would need to either. It would just show that yeah, he's with AEW now.

I don't think Buddy Matthews would be that big, even given as good of a wrestler as he is, and I hope it's not Braun. So, I hope it's Cole. Put him under the ring for the tag match. That match might even open the show. Or be 2nd on the card since the Battle Royale got moved to the PPV.

I know lots of people like his stuff before their matches he gets good reactions from the crowd but I also know that I am not the only one that thinks they are terrible. I don't order shows often, but I did for this one. It's been non-stop banger. Yes, that Casino Battle Royal was too chaotic and needed "slow down" periods. Hopefully they can figure something out going forward. I want justice for Riho since she didn't go over the top! Also, I'm surprised they didn't have Shida last longer. I've seen that she's been regulated to Dark for some reason. It's...perplexing.
But having Ruby debut and win is always a crowd pleaser (didn't know this was her "home town" as it were).
The tag match was great. I love how AEW will "give the fans what they want" more often than not when it's logical and not try to prolong things too much.
Miro/Eddie opener was great.
Baker/Statlander was good, too. I love that they had Orange show emotion and fire to get Kris fired up to beat the count back in the ring.
Moxley and Kojima was a hard hitter. And even though I didn't know who the guy was at the end, I'm glad more knowledgeable fans of New Japan gave him his props.
MJF is the new master of the asshole fake out music pop. Also, even Aubrey showing her disdain for MJF (and earlier, the ref screw up for the Kingston missed cover) were fun additions. I love when they do the little things.

The issue with the way they do their casino battle royals is that the first one out gets a big move on entry which takes away from who ever comes out next. Let it start with 5 or 6 then 1 minute intervals or something.

most of their battle royals drag too long. this was probably the best one i've seen, it was snappy and the crowd stayed engaged. slow down's in battle royals stink.
Maybe pacing out their time periods from 3:30 to 5:00 and if there are personal battles to hash out, extend when those suits come out? I'll have to see more of them.
I think MJF actually fucked himself up right there by the way he immediately reacted. Played it up later, but fuck, I am always impressed with how they can land on their coccys and NOT show emotion most of the time.
Okay, a little overbooked, but I'll allow it! We knew a ratfink was going to happen to see if they could get the reaction.

Just absolutely brilliant whoever really decided to book punk vs Darby. I was unfamiliar with Darby as well but the kid has got it from top to bottom package wise. He was a nice safety net for Punk to work off any ring rust and the kid can sell like no other. He damn near looked crippled the way he dragged himself across the ring. As crazy as it sounds Darby definitely walks away the person of that match. Punk was absolutely fine and I think after his first match back and shaking off the nerves we will see him let go a bit more in the ring. I'm interested in what is next.

Now that was some good shit, pal! I was wondering how they were going to play that Adam Cole would be mad at the Elite since they're his best friends. So I loved this here. Bryan at the end was icing on the cake. Truth be told, if Tony Khan was going to get the rights to any music, it was going to be the one most accessible from where most of the current audience knows Bryan's music from. I don't associate Final Countdown with him because I haven't seen him outside of WWE, really.

Tainted Eclipse

they went into the match with the mentality of "one upping" a perfectly executed TV main event sprint with an epic PPV main event, but it wasn't the match up or the time to have an epic PPV main event because the fans weren't into the match up on that level. if they had a quick, energetic 15 minute match a lot like their rampage match, it would have been a lot better.

I think that was 25% the crowd was a bit fatigued and 75% they knew Bryan was coming. The match was fine but the crowd, who had been rip roaring all night suddenly took a step back.

They've had the establishment, but now they seem to have the pieces needed to fill it out and start making a legacy. The phase of "hope this thing works" is over because it's working. People are talking and people are excited. I can't remember the last time fans were this united in celebration and hopeful for the future, something that's been missing for a long time.
