Anyway looks like cities to be announced next week for the new XFL.
Reports in St. Louis coming out yesterday and today is that St. Louis is landing one of the teams.
Should be interesting to say the least. They are going to play in the dome where the Rams used to play.

So the word is that they'll play in the dome for the first season, but st Louis did just vote yes on building a soccer stadium for a MLS team.
Decent chance the St Louis Xfl team plays there if all things work out.
Apparently there is a big announcement coming from the XFL Wednesday the 5th.
I'll be so fucking pumped if this all works out. It's also encouraging that Vince has had beef with Kroenke (the rams owner)

I doubt they play at the new soccer stadium. I don't think they plan on building a football/soccer stadium like other cities. When they city was trying to keep the Rams there were plans for a new stadium that would have been able to be used by a MLS team and NFL team but this is a different group focused on an MLS team for St. Louis.
I hate Kroenke and honestly the NFL. I would be more apt to go to an XFL game at this point. I don't at the Rams. Not their fault their owner is a douchebag.

The point is that an XFL team can easily use a MLS stadium. They seat usually around 20k which is perfect for XFL. NFL not so much. Field sizes are essentially the same. There is really no reason you would have to do anything different than what you are currently planning.

One major hurdle is that it will most likely be a garbage product. Where is the talent going to come from? The NFL will obviously get first crack. The Alliance of American Football is starting a year before the XFL, so they will get first crack at the NFL rejects. So you are basically going to be dealing with the leftovers from the Alliance of American Football. That is a major hurdle among many others.

Well, the biggest "hurdle" or as I call "negative" is the intent on being direct competition. Vince McMahon himself said, we're going to give football back to the fans. Vince's mentality is never "Eh, we'll just cater to that tiny niche who will watch ANY kind of football". That's Paul Heyman. Vince isn't putting 500 million into this just to be 2nd best. Delusional.
Then you have the talent.
Then you have the fact that the people who are "pissy" with the NFL...they're few and far between and are still tuning in every week despite what they claim on social media. Again, I RESPECT the optimism and if you're someone who will give this a chance, there's nothing negative coming from me on a personal level. I'm just being realistic. Outside of a puncher's chance, the XFL is going to have to accept taking a distance 5th in the world of football or kill the WWE while trying to stay afloat. Where do you think that money is really going to come from if it doesn't explode?
Get ready for WM 38 to be headlined by Stevie Richards v. Adam Rose.

I feel like Vince is hoping the discontent over lack of big hits/overall defense/political correctness arguments in the NFL will be the key selling point to his league.
Bottom line, I think it was a mistake the first time around back when his actual company (WWE) had more viewership around it during the Attitude Era. I definitely think its a mistake to do it again when his company lacks the viewership it had back then, even with the opportunity to bring over fans.

Kinda strange that it's basically all coastal teams, besides St Louis. I figured there would be at least one team in the Great Lakes region (Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, etc). Even a team in the deep south would be interesting.

Commissioner Oliver Luck said that touchdowns in the new league will result in the scoring team deciding whether to go for one point, two points, or three points.
The one-point conversion would come not from a kick but from a scrimmage play at the two. Two points would be scored after a successful conversion from the five. And three points would be scored for a successful conversion from the 10.
Luck said that the league considered moving the three-point conversion to the 15, but that the coaches believed defenses would more easily defend the end zone with that much territory to cover.
Kinda cool.

Thinking it through in my head I think that most of the plays we ran as 2 point plays as a coach would probably also work from the 5. But it does take away a lot of the quick pick plays and runs up the middle.
Interesting change. I wonder how teams will approach it.
Fro
April 9th, 2019, 10:56 AM
Yea, the strategy will be interesting. Moving back 3 yards to the 5 probably won't cut your conversion percentage in half, so I could see some teams always going for 2. Then again we can't think of this like NFL conversion rates since the quality of play will be worse, so teams might be best off just trying to power it in with a running back rather than trying a pass play from the 5. The 3 point play I imagine would only be used in late-game scenarios as needed.

Yeah we always had a play in our back pocket that even though we ran it every game it was very hard to defend and keep us from getting 3 yards. We ran it a lot on 2 point plays but also we would pull it out on a must convert 3rd and 3. We had other plays off of that look as well so we could give you a few different things. I cant think of anything like that working at the same rate from the 10.
Fro
April 9th, 2019, 1:56 PM
Also:
The XFL's overtime rules are currently being tested in the Spring League. Luck said each team will have five opportunities to convert a two-point conversion in the overtime session. The defense would score one point with a turnover. Forty-four players will be on the field at the same time in the overtime session, with both team's offenses and defenses on opposite ends of the field.
I'm not in love with this OT format (I prefer a style that stays more similar to normal football rules.... even in college there are still first downs, field goals, etc). But it sounds fine, and having both teams on each side of the field in order to speed it up is cool. In my head I imagine this working such that once the play is complete on one side of the field, the play clock would start on the other side of the field. So a quick back and forth with 5 tries on each side of the field (10 plays total). That's if I'm understanding it correctly.
Fro
April 11th, 2019, 1:52 PM
now that I think of it though, how would they do that without having two sets of refs? and that's tricky because you want to have consistency with the refs, like if they're calling the game a certain way the whole game you wouldn't want a different ref to now be calling the overtime. so I actually don't know how they will implement that type of OT from a ref perspective.

So they've announced that they are partnering with Fox and ESPN to broadcast games. There's a real mixed bag to all of this. By partnering with those companies, the games are going to be shown on Fox, FS1, ESPN, and ABC. That's pretty strong in terms of content exposure. The other big thing to come out of the announcement is that there will be no rights fees paid by the networks. So those huge deals WWE got from USA and Fox are not in the cards for the XFL. The trade off comes in the form of exposure, and those companies will handle the production fees and selling of ads.

I mean, I do think it’s better if the XFL knows what they are. They’re not the NFL and they aren’t going to be. These are guys either looking to advance their career to the next level or just hang on. Nothing wrong with that.

To be fair, there was a time when Roller Derby made people millionaires. It was at least as big as pro-wrestling, for a while.
Vince should aim for Roller Derby with the XFL. Because he isn't going to touch the NFL. Maybe the Arena Football League. Maybe.

vince should go old school carny. fix games for storylines, train players on promos, stage fights for angles and rivalries, etc.
Wasn't it getting a bit like that the last time, in 2001? I don't mean fixed games, but I thought it all got a bit 'WWE-like' after the initial big rating and the original XFL died a slow death.

Pluses: Kickoffs and punts... brilliant move with that setup. You watching NFL?
Replays: Not one replay ran more than what 60 seconds? (at least I can't think of any)
Microphones: As a Battlehawk guy (finally , I'm rooting for a hometown St. Louis team), Loved when the coach was yeling at his own player to 'get over here' to get him off the field when he was trash talking.
PATs: Pay attention NFL, that's how it should be done
Bad: SPOT THE BALL QUICKER REFS!! (I'm hoping that was just their college ref'ing style where they forgot to speed it up) What good is a 25 second clock, when it takes you 15 seconds to spot the ball, then what's the point of a 25 second clock. How many times were the players there before the refs to wait for the ball?
Waiting to see: LIve interviews during the game. Looked good in theory, asking a player what went wrong/right on a bad/good play, but I can see that coming back to be a FCC thing at some point.
Oliver Luck knows what he's doing... I see this version of the XFL lasting awhile if they don't screw it up.

During the original XFL run, they had one of their interview guys (or maybe a ref?) get clonked on the head and, just before sneaking into the cheerleader's locker room to interview them, pass out, and we got to see, via B-roll/a pre-produced video package segment, his elaborate sexual wet dreams about what he thought the cheerleaders got up to in their changing quarters.

https://www.wrestlinginc.com/news/2020/02/xfl-ratings-take-a-dip-in-week-2-on-abc-666616/
According to Jake Russell of The Washington Post, Saturday's game featuring the New York Guardians at the D.C. Defenders drew an average audience of 2.127 million viewers. It was down 35.5% from last Saturday's game on ABC, which averaged 3.3 million viewers.
ABC's game on Sunday featuring the Dallas Renegades at the L.A. Wildcats garnered 2.397 million viewers, down only 4% from 2.495 million viewers the previous week, however last week's game aired on ESPN and not on ABC.
ABC averaged 2.26 million viewers between the two games. The AAF saw a much steeper 65% drop from week one to week two, however the AAF aired on national television on CBS in its first week, compared to TNT and the NFL Network in its second.
The original XFL in 2001 fell 52% from week one to week two on NBC.
The ratings for the weekend's XFL games on FOX are not yet available.
Seems like the numbers are holding up well enough. They need more competitive games though. It's tough to watch all of any sporting event that's basically over a third of the way in.

The problem that some are pointing to is QB play. Offenses have struggled at times to move the ball. The depth of the defensive positions is much greater than at QB so the left overs for the XFL on defense are ahead of most of the QBs. RIght now there have been 3 solid QBs.
MTR
February 19th, 2020, 4:35 PM
It is a mix of college players that didn't make it or players that did get there at first and then got cut or maybe were in the NFL for longer and for some reason no longer there. The punter for St. Louis was in the NFL for several seasons and probably will be back later. Definitely been some trouble moving the ball at times but I think that will get better over time.

I think it's a mixed bag. Most of the players I remember looking up while watching had some NFL experience but it seemed quite a few never saw real regular or even pre-season action.
It's like when Baron Corbin talks about how he played in the NFL. Well, he never played an actual game but he was on like 7 teams. At least some of these players have seen real action.

Breaking: The XFL suspended operations Friday morning and laid off nearly all of its staff. The league currently has no plans to return in 2021.
So that's from the Sportscenter twitter. I'm a bit confused if this is just a shutdown for the year (which would make sense), or if they're shutting down permanently. That last line is unexpected. I figured they would be back in 2021. Maybe that's just semantics, as in they don't have any plans currently as they wait for this to play out. But people like Darren Rovell on twitter are acting like that's the end of the league.

Not a big fan of these city selections. Too many teams that are already in NFL markets. San Antonio and St. Louis are great, but Orlando and Tampa, really? They're 90 minutes from each other. 3 teams in Texas and none in Birmingham is very dumb.

Yeah it was not the best set of cities.

Since they're playing in the spring, I guess playing in NFL markets isn't too big a deal, but Florida is a bad idea for minor league football. Attendance in those games sucked compared to St. Louis' games. I think going into football-starved cities is a better strategy.

XFL draft coming. Today was QB selections. St. Louis picked up AJ McCarron. Not sure I feel about that. We shall see. Just hate cheering anyone from Alabama. lol
I really liked our QB from last time (Jordan Ta'amu) who was from Ole Miss so bonus. He bounced around practice squads and finally ended up in the USFL and where he lead in passing yards and TDs.

I always enjoy the drafts with a new league to see what players were with the top leagues of their respective sport before landing there.

Schedules released. St. Louis starts on the road for 3 games. Ugh. One of their home games is same day as a St. Louis City match so that means downtown will be crazy. I plan on making a least one game if I can.

Is there a team called the FlameDragons? There should be.
Go FlameDragons.

Seattle is the Sea Dragons. If there was not a St. Louis team I may have jumped on that wagon because I love dragons of any kind.

Dammit. I just realized that DC picked up the starter for the Battlehawks from 2020 to be their starting QB. Jordan Ta’amu He was great for the Battlehawks and he is an Ole Miss alum to boot. Instead I have a filthy Bama alum for starting QB to cheer for.

Wild that Josh Gordon ended up in the XFL. Got a look at the rosters, not more than a dozen names I recognize. Hope they bring back the nicknames on jerseys.
MTR
February 17th, 2023, 4:28 PM
They didn't do nicknames last time. That was just the first time around however many years ago now. 2020 version was more football than entertainment.
Yeah not a ton of names people will recognize. For me on the Battlehawks roster: A.J. McCarron played some in NFL but mostly known for his time at Alabama. Austin Proehl is son of Ricky Proehl former Rams favorite back when they were in St. Louis. Plus Ricky is one of the coaches for the Battlehawks.
I feel like I know a few more names through the league but not much. Most of these people never really made the NFL but maybe did USSF or something after college or bounced round NFL practice squads or something.

St. Louis Battlehawks had a really fun comeback today. I am so happy to see the XFL back. I was digging the St. Louis team before Covid hit and ruined everything. I hope they can finish the season and we get a playoff.

I am kicking myself. I was struggling to stay awake and assumed game was over with how good the other team's defense had been shutting down our offense. Turned off tv at 2 minute warning and napped. Fucking missed the comeback.

I am thinking of catching a Michigan Panthers game at Ford Field. I hope they can improve over last year's crappy season. I am glad they are playing here in Michigan though.

St. Louis needs a new kicker. Ugh.
MTR
February 24th, 2023, 1:54 AM
Yes he did hit the game winning FG but he also was 2/4 on the night and was something similar last week.
Kudos to the Battlehawks for winning their first two games.

Damn. Demand keeps going up for tickets. St. Louis opened up the 300 level seating and now has opened up the 400 level seating for the game this week for their home opener. Fucking Kroenke should have just found a way to build a new stadium here or update the Dome. The fans of this city want football here.

Minor league football can be profitable if it's done in football-starved cities. Should be a fun game to watch.

If we win and Seattle wins yeah I think it goes to point differential I guess because we are tied head to head.
Okay just checked if we win and Seattle loses we are in. If we both lose we are in. If we lose and they win they are in. If we both win then it comes down to point differential. We need to win by more than 19 points and still rank first in total points against.
I have an extra ticket so now time to see who I can get to come with me and the oldest and their boyfriend.

April 24th, 2023, 10:13 AM
I was worried in the first half that we wouldn't win big but that changed in the second half to set record for points in a single game. AJ had like 6 touchdowns. Sadly not enough though as Seattle won the tie break and goes to the playoffs while a team from the south with a losing record goes to the playoffs....
Randolph
April 24th, 2023, 11:13 PM
With eight teams, they should've gone without divisions and reward the top four teams. A team with a losing record in the playoffs is not a good show for them.
MTR
April 25th, 2023, 12:23 PM
I can understand doing divisions especially if you are doing just 10 weeks. home and home vs division and then one game each against the other division is nice and tidy. You wouldn't really expect to see a division suck as bad as the south but there you go. It does suck that a losing team is in when a winning team is out.
MTR
May 1st, 2023, 12:08 PM
And of course the team with a losing record wins the playoff game and will play the best team in the league for the championship.

DC needs to win this to avoid the stench of the inaugual champion having a losing record.
And AJ McCarron deserved the MVP trophy damnit!
MTR
May 5th, 2023, 11:20 PM
Yeah I have to ignore that he was from Bama but AJ was a beast and that last game was record breaking. Didn't he lead the league in a lot of things and he missed a game.
I can understand why Ta'amu was named offensive player of the year despite not leading that many categories. He was near the top and he lead the DC team to the best record. He can also run the ball and was near the top in rushing yards where AJ didn't have that. He ran but not as much. I am a fan of his. He is from Ole Miss. He was on the first Battlehawks team before the shut down and was basically leading all categories and leading us to a top record before the shut down. I hate that he has never gotten a shot at the NFL. He has been on practice squads and gotten some tryouts but never got to play a regular season game.
MTR
May 14th, 2023, 2:53 PM
 The best team in the league got beat so a team that finishes 6-6 if you add their two playoff wins is the XFL champ
Randolph
May 14th, 2023, 6:33 PM
I think they should do away with divisions unless they add more teams. Arlington got hot, but a 6 and 6 team shouldn't wi. the inaugural championship.
MTR
May 15th, 2023, 12:28 AM
Yeah it would be nice if they could have done like a 14 week season and just played everyone twice and done like top 4 teams or something.
I mean they were spinning as well as they could as the cinderalla team especially against the top team in DC
Tyson

I imagine we’ll see XFL ownership take a look at the whole process.
I feel like the sole purpose of the 2023 season was to establish a baseline: all eight teams completed their seasons and they crowned a champion. Not only that, a second season looks promising.
“We’ll take that W.”
