Let's do it right.

I've just realised how hard out group is.

We've not been at this 2nd half yet. Hard to see us getting much at the minute

Think that's a great result for us. Not a great second half as in the first we carried some threat

son_of_foley
September 4th, 2016, 4:38 PM
Jonny Evans by a mile imo

He was brilliant as was Stevie but though mcLaughlin was at the centre of a lot of the good stuff in 1st half.

Norwood was told to take it easy second half you would imagine and as such didn't do much

Andy

Only Malta but encouraging for Scotland, attacking wise anyway. Concerning how awful the centre back options are but lots of different types of attackers in the squad and Snodgrass is looking good. Hopefully he can stay injury free for a long while. Ritchie did well too.

Great first half. Not as great second. I think the away game will be tough. They have improved a bit over the last few years or at least they showed that in the 2nd half. In the first they could not live with the pressure and kept giving the ball away sloppily.

We were excellent first half. Genuinely bullied them and Jonny Evans was absolutely amazing. I honestly believe we have the best CB pairing out of all the home nations.

son_of_foley
March 27th, 2017, 4:10 AM
Stevie Davis was nothing short of amazing last night.

Absolutely runs the game these days and does so a lot further up the pitch. His assist was blinding.

What a man. What a captain.

son_of_foley
March 27th, 2017, 5:57 AM
Any preference on a successor?

I just hope Michael stays for this campaign as I think we can qualify.

He's now at the stage that he will get premiership offers and it's hard to be anything other than delighted for him as he's a lovely man

wardy
March 27th, 2017, 6:03 AM
He's done a fantastic job. Your mob and the good Ireland have done well with managers in recent years while none of ours seem to make a blind bit of difference. I'd have Walter Smith back in a heartbeat but other than that I don't have a clue. There certainly isn't another Scottish manager I'd like except maybe Moyes.

England won the Toulon at the weekend as well with what I believe was an under-19 or under-18 team as the under-20's and 21's are both otherwise engaged.

Quite impressive.

I was at Hampden on Saturday.

The second goal was the biggest eruption I've ever seen at a football game. Bigger than Celtic/Barca, bigger than Rogic at Hampden. The biggest I've ever ever seen and the highest high I have ever experienced at football.

He won't do it but Strachan should be making big changes for tonight. Bannon and Phillips are shit and Forrest has never kicked a ball for Scotland. We looked a lot better when Martin came on and allowed Griffiths to go deep and play a bit so I'd start Martin, Anya and McGregor and drop Phillips, Forrest and Bannon. Maybe even change to a 3-5-2 with Tierney in a more comfortable left centre back position. Fuck it. Whatever we do, we can't play that midfield 5 again.

Changes like what? That squad got out of a group with Germany, Ghana and Portugal.

Obviously there can always be improvements but there have been new initiatives and growth in the past few years that look promising i.e the expansion of MLS, the exposure of generation Adidas, the Bundesliga actively acquiring young American talent and giving them opportunities, new soccer markets providing proper stadiums and sell out crowds for national team matches.

The reality is that this is a failure at senior team level as this squad was perfectly capable of qualifying. There's plenty of young talent too at clubs like Dortmund, Schalke, Fiorentina, Spurs, Bournemouth, Arsenal, as well as round the MLS. It was the wrong time to say it but Arena was right to say you don't make wholesale changes based on the width of the post.

Maybe they can start by looking at why it didn't look like the players were anywhere near as good as you've suggested throughout qualification? Why did none of them seem to give a fuck? Complacency? Shit coaching? Fatigue?

They won three games against the other teams in that group. That is some colloidal underperformance. Even if hey had scraped through I'd suggest some pretty wholesale change somewhere is required. It's not because they lost to Trinidad and Tobago that they need to take a good look at themselves, it's because it came down to this game when it absolutely should never have.

When a team that should qualify doesn't, that is when you need to look at what the fuck you are doing, not when the team is hopeless and you meet expectations. If the USA can't work out why this team underperformed and correct it then the malaise will only continue and their promising youth set up won't breed anything but more of the same.

I don't know enough about their set up to know in depth what needs changing but clearly something fundamentally isn't right when a group with talent like theirs is eliminated by the likes of Panama, Costa Rica and Honduras.

Well, He is very clearly not a football fan, Given his history, so he is not going to care is he? I would suggest the actual football fans from the USA, Including those that post in here and the US thread care.

I do find it weird when some Americans say they don't like it because it's 'boring' and then I try and watch NFL but I can't because it's so stuttered and there is no flow to the game because there is a stoppage every 15 seconds.

He's not a big football fan no but he clearly has at least a passing interest. He's right when he says it won't matter too much though because in the grand scheme of things, soccer is the 5th/6th biggest sport in the country.

Peter Griffin

Well no sport really matters in the grand scheme of things, But if Forest beat us on Sunday I will still cry myself to sleep

It's actually started to bother me how irritated I get when Spurs do badly these days. My wife has said numerous times that she'd prefer it if Spurs were a mid-table team again, when I cared a lot less.

In particular, the semi-final loss to Chelsea in the FA Cup back in April and the recent Swansea game, in very brief moments, I became that kind of fan I hate.

Nothing major or owt, I don't shout, swear or throw stuff, it's just bollocks how it can make me so frustrated. Makes me wonder why I bother sometimes. But then something good happens and all the bad stuff gets forgotten. :D

I think one thing we can all agree on is that the World Cup (and European Championships) qualification system is way too complex.

Thanks goodness some absolute genius at UEFA has sorted that out with this devilishly straight forward and easy to understand Nations League.

So one of Azerbaijan, Macedonia, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia., Latvia, Faroe Islands, Luxembourg, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Liechtenstein, Malta, Andorra, Kosovo, San Marino or Gibraltar will be automatically qualified for the Euros.

BBF
October 11th, 2017, 8:48 AM
No, from how I understand it this determines the qualification order for the euros/world cup.

So Nations League > Euro/world cup qualifiers > Euros/World Cup rather than Nations League > Euros/World Cup

By virtue of the format, lower-tier countries - the bottom 16 in the rankings - are now guaranteed one of the 24 qualifying slots for the European Championship finals.

You do understand you are posting in a FOOTBALL thread right troll boy.

I wasn't trolling at all. I was actually making a very valid point. This actually happened at one of the busier times of the year in the sports world for the US.

With the MLB playoffs going on, the NFL and college football in full swing and the NBA starting next week this will become a non issue in a matter of days. All of those sports are much, much more popular in the US than soccer. This will be a distant memory by the weekend.

I get it that people on here might care. I never said that they didn't. But to the majority of the people in the US they have a much more vested rooting interest in at least one other sport right now, if not three or four.

But there are people that do care. Yes it's not the number one sport but the people in this thread care. You can say that about any sport though right? If one team sucks, they move on to the next sport.

He's talking about the national collective consciousness though.

If this were to happen in say early August. Things would be different. It might take up more time on the sport shows. It would be a national embarrassment that would constantly be shoved in the faces of the American people. But because it happened in October with everything else going on. It will leave the news cycle much faster.

I'm sure there will be changes that will occur in the US soccer program. But maybe it's for the best that other things are going on so that it doesn't completely kill all the growth that has been made in America regarding soccer.

I'm actually beyond shocked. How does the US not beat Trinidad?

Granted I did not want them to have to play that playoff game and take away Bradley and Altidore for another game.

Because USA is shit. You can blame the conditions of the pitch which was apparently bad too, but USA had absolutely no pursuit it seemed until they were down coming out of half

Chris Scott
October 11th, 2017, 5:08 PM
I hate international anyway but decide to look into how USA never made it. That’s system is crazy like but USA not getting top 4 is a bit shocking.

MTR
October 11th, 2017, 5:38 PM
Yeah. Insane they didn't finish top 4.

On top of being in the position we were in last night. Even losing last night wouldn't have ended our chances at the playoff against Australia but the fact that Panama and Hondorus both won over teams that already clinched finished us off. Also I saw video about one of the goals that Panama scored that really wasn't a goal or something which gave them the win instead of draw. Despite that we should have never even been in that spot though. We are better than what we played like in the qualifiers. So frustrating.

Chris Scott
October 12th, 2017, 5:52 AM
Yeah you shouldn’t have never been in that position but Panama’s first goal wasn’t over the line, so you got screwed on that.

I reckon we'll absolutely batter Panama, probably by as big a margin as 2-0, to send the England fans home happy after we pick up one point from the first two games and are already out.
