Nintendo is bringing back the NES — only a little smaller.
Today the company announced what it's calling the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition. It looks just like a NES, only a lot tinier, and it comes with 30 games built in. You can connect it to your TV via a HDMI cable, and it also includes a controller designed to work just like the iconic rectangular NES gamepad. (The new controller will also connect to a Wii Remote, so that you can use it to play Virtual Console games on a Wii or Wii U.)
In addition to HDMI support and a lack of cartridges, the new mini-console also features one useful modern convenience: multiple suspend points, so that you won't have to fumble around with passwords when you start playing a game again. The NES Classic Edition will be available on November 11th for $59.99.
Here's the complete list of games:
Balloon Fight
Bubble Bobble
Castlevania
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Jr.
Double Dragon II: The Revenge
Dr. Mario
Excitebike
Final Fantasy
Galaga
Ghosts'N Goblins
Gradius
Ice Climber
Kid Icarus
Kirby's Adventure
Mario Bros.
Mega Man 2
Metroid
Ninja Gaiden
Pac-Man
Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream
StarTropics
Super C
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
Tecmo Bowl
The Legend of Zelda
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

I dig it. $60 for all those games is worth the price for me.

Cool concept. I hope they had more titles.
Will it devalue all the old collector's NES?

I was wondering when they would do this like they've done for the Sega Genesis. The only downside is that you can't play original cartridge games and that sucks because I have like 20 games that aren't on that list that I've gone through a ton of NES's over the years. I need to get that deal where you can play Super NES and reg NES games for like $60 on Amazon. My cousin has it, says it's incredible.

This seems like a pretty sweet deal at $60 for those who don't have access to the virtual console via Wii or Wii U. That game list is solid as hell. But since I have a Wii U and a lot of these games on there already, I won't be purchasing.
Btw Hero you can have the thread because you actually got the console name right in the thread title lol

Its worth the money and I'm glad they are giving people more legal means but it seems a bit on the light side. The option to get more games via thumb drive would have me tripping over myself to get this thing.

Bubble Bobble alone is honestly worth price lol. I remember one of my close friends who was about 5 years older than me played that game religiously. That fucking music is addicting.

Very awesome. If this is successful enough I'm hoping they do one for SNES with Donkey Kong Country, Street Fighter II, and Turtles in Time. And I have all these games but two, I'll still be getting this.

Great collection of games there. Nintendo finally making the kind of moves that people have been asking for.

be good if you could download more games onto it from a Nintendo site as well, with a slot for extra storage or something (not that these games require much storage)

Is it actually an NES or is it an emulator?
I've never owned a Nintendo so I'm definitely interested.

I got really excited about this and then remembered I already have most of those games on the wii U virtual console.
But I still want it.
Is something wrong with me?

It wont play cartridges and comes pre-loaded with games. I hope they eventually expand it so you can download more games onto it

I wonder if they can do it like a Google Chrome or Amazon Fire at some point. By that, I mean enabling users to pay for individual games. They could make a ton of money if they went that route.

It could be an actual NES. I think what would normally lead people to believe its an emulator, is the fact that it has HDMI output.
https://www.game-tech.us/mods/original-nes/
But as seen here, modders have managed to add digital HDMI output to an actual original NES console.
Or they could've just used an emulator out of pure laziness.

Nintendo have refused to answer whether it is an emulator. So it is an emulator. Nice box though

Why does it matter if it is an emulator?
Beefy
July 15th, 2016, 4:25 AM
In a way it doesn't but there's a certain snobbishness about wanting the hardware. If you're just going to run an emulation most of us could get all of these games up and running on our PCs for free in a few minutes.
The Rogerer
July 15th, 2016, 4:30 AM
Oh mister "subhuman scum torrent WWE" now thinks we're all highfalutin for buying official merch instead of downloading ROMs.
I would slightly agree with you but it's a really nice little thing for $60.
Beefy
July 15th, 2016, 4:36 AM
I wouldn't download ROMs and run emulation on my PC because I'm not some kind of thieving wanker. I was just making the point.
RuneEdge
July 15th, 2016, 5:20 AM
Why does it matter if it is an emulator?
I guess its just in this case where since its something that's sort of a collectors item, I'd prefer it to be real hardware. If it's an emulator, well there are plenty of other devices that could already do that for you.
If this had been a small handheld device that I could carry around, then that'd be cool to have. Smart phones have emulators but the lack of physical buttons makes most games unplayable. So if it was something like a cheap Game Boy-like device with buttons, I can see the appeal in that, regardless of whether it was an emulator or not.
If this is just going to be an emulator for your TV, you might as well get something like a Amazon Fire TV Stick, which can run emulators and pairs with your PS4 controller.

There's tons of Raspberry Pi Nintendo builds that are all great. I got a Pi3 on the way and plan on building one soon, likely after I get back from vacation. Gonna build the case out of Lego, cause I love that aesthetic.
RuneEdge
July 31st, 2016, 6:46 PM
Yeah, there are loads of Raspberry Pi builds around. But personally never seen one with a working cartridge system of any sort built into it. I like what this dude has done with the NFC and the little 3d printed carts. Plus the carts are also loaded with the classic cover and spring loading mechanism.

I would download games with little hesitation especially prior to the Wii generation. The publisher doesn't get paid if I pick them up from a Gamestop to begin with and Earthbound was running over 100 bucks. Fuck that.

Re-release coming 6/29
Quantities should be closer to the SNES Classic, which I have now seen in store 5 or 6 times. I have a RasPi, BUUUUUT I really wanna snag the mini nintendo systems now. If they do N64 next, I don't wanna not have the NES and SNES minis too.

Man I STILL haven't actually seen a SNES mini up close in a store. My little brother just happened to be walking through electronics at a Wal Mart when they were stocking them and he got himself one and one for me. But just out of curiosity I always check every time I'm at a Target etc to see if they have them on the shelf and they never do.
I want the NES classic but just like with the SNES I do not want to spend over the msrp just to own one.
When they do the N64 mini they had better really ramp up the production from the get go.

NES Classic will be steadily available through the end of the year after it re-releases. At least, that's what Nintendo said on Twitter.

I usually go to Wal-mart on saturday morning for some groceries and that's typically when i've seen them. Usually 2-3 sitting there.

I immediately put on Punch-Out. Haven’t played the original in years.
Didnt get get hit until Bald Bull and didnt job out until the second Bald Bull fight.
When the NES Classic was first out, I didn’t think it would be such a huge deal and still had a working NES so I didn’t bother with it. The original NES hasn’t been hooked up for awhile and with the Virtual Console disappearing on the Switch, I’ve really been jonsing for this. The SNES and NES Classics are now vital to what I play. Still needs the best game on the SNES on the SNES one, but that’s a different story.
