It's been years since we've done this and it's always fun. We've got a few different posters, loads more players to choose from now and the recent talk of Rooney being so much worse than before made me wonder if it would affect how he's viewed in this kind of thing.

Snake draft picking one player each time filling a squad of 11. Any player can be picked as long as they've played in the Premier League in any of its various incarnations since 1992. We can have a little debate along the way and vote at the end regarding who's built the best squad.

Who's in?

The first thing you need to agree on is what this is based on. For example, does George Weah count as a better striker than Chris Sutton because he was better... or against how he played in the Premiership. This was never previously discussed.

I also remember being delighted to pick up Mikel Arteta as my 11th player last time because he was fantastic for a long time before becoming an Arsenal recluse.

The Beer Monster
January 6th, 2016, 6:00 PM
I'll make a pick.
Or however this works.

In thinking about this I put my team together, really struggled with right backs.

BBF
January 6th, 2016, 6:09 PM
This is just based on the premier league and performances in it.

If the debate is good we can maybe do a 'all time' one soon.

How does it work with regards to squads out of interest?

Do we need set numbers of players by position or are we just picking 11 great players regardless?

Any preferences? 4-4-2? 4-5-1? 4-2-3-1?

MikeHunt

4-4-2

The Rosk

I'm out. Nazis.

Reech
January 7th, 2016, 7:48 AM
For once, I agree with Rosk.

If my XI is just a keeper and 10 marauding midfielders, I should be allowed that. It just won't hold up in the debate/poll versus a proper team with a proper formation like "4-4-fucking-2".

Beefy
January 7th, 2016, 7:52 AM
This was a brilliant idea but it fizzled out. I fucking smashed the cunt out of this.

We finished this all the way through one time at least and then had people vote through who would win in games between the teams. But none of you cunts were old enough to remember Rob Jones so my amazing team with Beckham, Le Tissier, Collymore and Shearer went out early.

EDIT - I had Rooney as well. What a team that was.

It was also when turdpower admitted that he had never seen Eric Cantona play.

Anyway I'm in.

Thierry Henry
No need to elaborate but I will anyway.

I was going to choose a midfielder as I agree that top strikers have been more common in the league over the years but since I won't get to pick again for roughly another 5 billion years I decided to go for the out and out best player, regardless of position. Nobody comes close for me. Ronaldo would've surpassed him if he stayed though.

Also, Beefy only picked Roy Keane because he knows for a fact that ECG will come in and declare him the winner. I have it on good authority that his list also contains Clinton Morrison and Mark Kinsella.

Reech

Also I appreciate Schmeichel is considered the best goalkeeper but picking a goalie here hurts what the rest of your team looks like. This is all about perception.

I agree with the theory that perception is everything but Schmeichel is a great choice on those terms IMO - goalkeeper is the most important position and is also just about the only position where one player stands out above all others in the PL era, with Schmeichel comfortably ahead of Cech, who is comfortably ahead of everyone else. Schmeichel would have been up there with Shearer as my first choice even if I had first pick.

I doubt there's any other player in the history of the premier league worth as many points per season to a team, he was my first choice by a mile for that simple reason.

Torn
January 12th, 2016, 12:22 PM
I don't think goalkeeper is the most important position at all - mainly because out of 14 players you'll each get a chance to pick a solid keeper who will look just fine and rest of your team will look a lot better because you have an extra elite outfield player in the mix. I don't think the drop off is as much as you reckon Simon. We'll see how the teams shake out and I'll provide a better comparison of players to show what I mean when more guys have been picked, also so many players can be counted since the last time we did this so you might end up with a very strong team with the best keeper. But I wouldn't do it.

Disagree. He was arguably in the top 4 players of the best side in Premier League history.

Giggs being an average player for a 20 year span and is only considered elite because of his longetivity is revisionist history and I laugh every time it's brought up on here. Almost as if being a top player for 20 years is a) a bad thing and b) somehow hurts your legacy.

Yeah it's bollocks - Giggs was incredible in his first few years, had one mediocre spell which lasted 18 months or so and was then sensational again for years, only petering out towards the end of his career. If Giggs had retired at 35 or so like he should have done, there's no way we would be having this discussion.

Giggs is clearly a top 10 player and probably the best left winger in PL history. That being said I think he's the most overrated of the 'class of '92' and would rather have Scholes, Gary Neville or Beckham in my team.

I was just wondering who would pick the first current premier league player. Wonder how many will make the final team compared to 92 league.

This is why I bloody wanted to do this again by the way. We've got some great football posters but the forums itself had petered a bit. Lets get some bloody debate going. Superb work so far.

Giggs is clearly a top 10 player and probably the best left winger in PL history. That being said I think he's the most overrated of the 'class of '92' and would rather have Scholes, Gary Neville or Beckham in my team.

God mate you are NAILED on for the POTTY this year.

Scholes and Schmichel were my first two choices, Giggs is undoubtedly worthy of the top ten though especially is his reliability over the years.

I think there's a tendency to under-estimate current players and maybe slightly romanticise the players who were great when you were young. But then I would say that because Aguero.

I dunno if you're being serious or looking for a bite but come on.

I can accept Terry and Ferdinand because they have the longevity in PL terms but Adams was every bit as good, certainly better than Vidic and Carvalho who had their weaknesses and in terms of longevity over Stam.

Surely this has nothing to do with longevity? This is a collection of players who we're being asked to put together into a team based on how good they were in the Premier League, no?

Peter Atherton and Rory Delap have 700 Premier League appearances between them but they're not on my shortlist.

Also Ledley is as good as Adams and I'd have both over most of those names that Simon listed (not Stam obvs)

Well I would assume longevity would be use in a 'tiebreak' situation between 2 equally good players.

That's fair enough. I guess the point I'm making is that there are some fantastic players who then played on for too long or got injuries, or the other way players who were good but not great and then were suddenly great.

Personally if I'm assessing a team who has someone like that in the side then I'm thinking of that player when they were at their peak.

Peter Schmeichel had longevity but some of it was a couple of shit years at Man City. That shouldn't count against him. And it isn't Leeds United's Eric Cantona who got picked in the top 10.

Simon
January 13th, 2016, 11:50 AM
I dunno if you're being serious or looking for a bite but come on.

I can accept Terry and Ferdinand because they have the longevity in PL terms but Adams was every bit as good, certainly better than Vidic and Carvalho who had their weaknesses and in terms of longevity over Stam.

Obviously you're joking about King.

Adams was absolutely not better than Vidic, Carvalho or Stam. Longevity is only relevant to an extent, I don't think anyone's going to be putting Henrik Larsson in but these are players who were utterly dominant for the time they were around, which in each case was a fair old amount of time. If you're talking longevity then Dion Dublin should be picked before Van Nistelrooy seeing as he scored more goals.

I'm not putting Adams down here at all - I admit he was very good and would have him down as seventh or eighth best of all time - and you can't claim it's an anti-Arsenal thing when I admitted that slag Campbell was better than him...I'm just saying there were better players than him. That dominant Arsenal side's defence was all about the unit - Adams was a big part of it, but on his own I don't think he was this incredible player you're making him out to be. An incredibly important player and part of Arsenal's history for sure, as the captain of arguably their best ever side, and that goal against Everton was a 'perfect' Premier League moment though it pains me to say it...but I am surprised to see him ranked so highly (though less surprised it's an Arsenal fan picking him). He was good, he wasn't great.

Simon
January 13th, 2016, 12:16 PM
Alonso is a strange one in that he was never rated as a true superstar while he was here - in fact I would argue it's only been in the past few years at Bayern that people re-evaluated him as one of the best ever in his position, even at Madrid he was one of those that the pros talked up a lot, but wasn't necessarily appreciated by fans. Not that Liverpool or Madrid fans didn't rate him of course, but it was always other players that were talked about ahead of him.

If this thread had happened on the day he left the Premier League, I don't think he'd be anywhere near as high as he is now, yet years later and without having played a single minute of football here since, he's now seen as one of the greats. Weird.

Beefy
January 13th, 2016, 12:19 PM
I remember Liverpool fans being very big on Alonso. I thought he was great, to be honest. I seem to recall him being very highly spoken on on Rajah - what player could ask more than that?
