So anyone else out there collect/use these figures? I mainly just collect but I have a few with up to level 50 on smash. Heres some of my recent gets. Post pics of ones you have and talk about what you think of them. Do you hate them? Love them? Who do you want them to make?

I took one look at them and thought, "this looks like a way to get people to spend way too much on something that should already be in the games"...

They are figurines with some kind of chip or something in them that your WiiU can read so if you own the figure you get the bonuses for the game the figure relates to. Usually they are just token things like an extra costume or an XP bonus but I think lately they've started putting more sizeable content on them like whole maps/levels/characters. And usually certain ones are really rare so if you want the figure and its content you have to pay scalpers on eBay.

Oh its sketchy alright haha. Its a dirty business. Just like regular toy collecting. If its hot the scalpers are on it.

I think amiibos are brilliant from a business perspective for Nintendo. From a consumer perspective, I hear what people are saying when they complain about locked content that should be included in the game price. The way they were incorporated into Smash Bros was perfect and not at all unfair to the consumer but the way they're incorporated into Splatoon where they unlock missions is a little annoying especially since it's a game with a short single player mode to begin with. I own 1 amiibo that came with my pre-order of Smash Bros (Mario) and I probably won't get any others. As a collectible figurine they are pretty cool but I'm not in that game.

can't you only use each amiibo for one game? like they don't have much memory onboard.

Yes, well... there's 2 things amiibos seem to do. 1 is simply unlocking things, and you can use 1 amiibo to unlock shit in any game it's compatible with since it's a 1-way process and nothing gets written back on the amiibo. The other thing is its read-write abilities like in Smash Bros where you can fight against your amiibo, level it up, give it custom moves and an outfit. In that case the memory gets written back onto the amiibo itself. For read-write functions, an amiibo might be compatible with multiple game but it can only save data for 1 game at a time. So if you used your Mario amiibo with Smash Bros but then you wanted to use it for Mario Party, you would have to delete the Smash Bros data on it in order to start building it up for Mario Party.

I don't have any personally but Ive bought a few for my nephew and he loves them. We leveled up his Fire Mario and Luigi ones for Smash Bros and they're killer.
